Greece lawmakers elect country’s first female president

Greece’s lawmakers elected their country’s first female president Wednesday, with an overwhelming majority voting in favor of high court judge Katerina Sakellaropoulou.

Speaking after being formally informed of the parliament vote, Sakellaropoulou said she would aim for the “broadest possible consensus” in the course of carrying out her duties.

In her first comments as president-elect, the judge noted the “difficult conditions and challenges of the 21st century, including the financial crisis, climate change, the mass movement of populations and the consequent humanitarian crisis, the erosion of the rule of law and all manner of inequalities and exclusions.”

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis nominated Sakellaropoulou as a non-partisan candidate who would enjoy broad support from across the political spectrum. All major parties voted in favor of the nomination, with Sakellaropoulou being elected to the largely ceremonial post in a 261-33 vote, well above the 200 votes required. Six lawmakers were absent.

Greece has a historically low number of women in senior positions in politics, and Mitsotakis had been criticized for selecting a nearly all-male Cabinet after he won general elections in July 2019. In the current Greek Cabinet, all but one of the 18 senior positions are held by men.

Speaking after the vote, Mitsotakis described Sakellaropoulou, 63, as a “great jurist, a great judiciary personality who unites all Greeks from the minute this procedure began.”

He said he sought to nominate a candidate who would “symbolize the youth of the Greek nation, and I am glad that the result confirmed that on the big issues, we can finally agree.”

European officials congratulated Sakellaropoulou, with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen welcoming the election of Greece’s first female president in a tweet that said the country was “moving ahead into a new era of equality.”

European Council head Charles Michel also tweeted congratulations, saying it was “a great signal to elect the Republic’s first female head of state.”

Sakellaropoulou, who has headed the Council of State, the country’s highest administrative court, since 2018, is to begin her five-year term in March, when the term of the current president, veteran conservative politician Prokopis Pavlopoulos, expires.

President Trump is portraying the exact image he wants to throughout the Senate impeachment proceedings, former White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer said Tuesday.

Appearing on “America’s Newsroom” with host Sandra Smith, Fleischer said that the president’s focus on the economy during his trip to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland was “a perfect almost split screen” to that of news conferences from House Managers and Senate Democrats ahead of day one of the Senate impeachment trial under Chief Justice John Roberts.

HOUSE IMPEACHMENT MANAGERS TARGET TOP TRUMP DEFENSE ATTORNEY CIPOLLONE, CLAIM HE IS ‘MATERIAL WITNESS’

“I think Washington is consumed with this partisan leverage game of ‘one party hates the other, the other party hates the other back,’ and that’s what you see in the Schumer news conference while the president is conducting the nation’s policies and business,” he stated.

“I think that’s the exact image the president wants to portray and should portray throughout the next couple [of] weeks as impeachment drags on.”

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., told reporters Tuesday that he plans to “offer amendments to fix…many flaws” of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s impeachment resolution and that his first proposal is to subpoena documents and communications.

Additionally, the House Managers blasted the proposed trial rules as “rigged,” just hours before proceedings are slated to resume on the floor.

However, the president stuck to his “America First” agenda, touting a “blue-collar boom” in a speech to the global elite.

“America’s thriving, America’s flourishing, and yes, America is winning again like never before,” Trump said.

The president reeled off a number of accomplishments for the labor force under his leadership, pointing to the more than 7 million jobs created, helping push the unemployment rate to 3.5 percent, its lowest in 50 years.

“The American dream is back, bigger, better, stronger than ever before,” he said.

Fleischer told Smith that, while the president has not yet responded to Democrats’ comments, “it wouldn’t surprise [him] if he just goes after it on Twitter or says something at some point later.”

“But,” he added, “I just think policy and running the country is his best foot forward, and leave this Washington noise and nonsense to others.”

“That’s what impeachment has become; it’s just become the typical partisan games that everybody’s used to and tired of. Let the president rise above,” said Fleischer. “The only thing that really matters is getting beyond this because it’s a complete waste of time.”

Winter storm lashes Spain for third day, killing at least 4, cutting power to thousands

A powerful winter storm battered Spain for a third day on Tuesday, bringing strong winds, heavy rains, and massive waves to a region that’s seen at least four deaths linked to the severe weather.

The storm arrived on Sunday, bringing heavy snow, rain, and gale-force winds to Spain before moving into southern France by Tuesday.

Much of the northeastern province of Gerona was without electricity Tuesday because of a fault in the power connection with France, emergency services said on its Twitter account. Around 200,000 people were reported to have been impacted.

Isolated Iran leader lashes out at Europe as nations join US in ramping up pressure

Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei on Friday lashed out at Germany, the U.K. and France, calling them the “footmen of the U.S.,” days after the European countries moved to sanction the Islamic Republic for violating the controversial 2015 nuclear deal.

“The threat of the French & German govts & the vicious British govt to send Iran’s case to the Security Council proved once again that they are the footmen of the US,” Khamenei said on Twitter. “These 3 countries are the ones who helped [former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein] as much as they could in his war against us.”

The three countries, which are members of the coalition that penned the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPoA) in 2015, on Tuesday had formally accused Iran of breaching the Obama-era nuclear deal, beginning a process that could result in the U.N. restoring sanctions on the rogue regime.

“We do this in good faith with the overarching objective of preserving the JCPoA and in the sincere hope of finding a way forward to resolve the impasse through constructive diplomatic dialogue while preserving the agreement and remaining within its framework,” the three countries’ foreign ministers said in a statement.

IRANIAN SUPREME LEADER PRAISES MISSILE ATTACK IN RARE APPEARANCE

The ministers accused Iran of breaking “key restrictions,” including most recently a limit on the number of centrifuges and enrichment. Iran has been vocal in threatening to break the deal since the U.S. departure in 2018, leading to fears in Europe that the time needed by Iran to produce a nuke is getting shorter. The countries, therefore, referred the matter to the Joint Commission under the Dispute Resolution Mechanism.

“In doing so, our three countries are not joining a campaign to implement maximum pressure against Iran. Our hope is to bring Iran back into full compliance with its commitments under the JCPoA,” they said in the statement.

But Khamenei showed no sign of softening his stance. In response, he rehashed claims about how those governments helped Saddam Hussein’s regime in Iraq and accused them of being terrorists in different clothes.

“Even when these govts negotiate, their negotiations are mixed with deception. The same people who appear at the negotiating table – the same so called ‘gentlemen’ behind the table – are the same terrorists of the Baghdad airport. They just change clothes,” he said.

US-IRAN TENSIONS: A TIMELINE OF INCIDENTS BETWEEN TWO LONGTIME RIVALS

The European decision to trigger the dispute mechanism comes amid growing pressure from the U.S. on Iran. The Trump administration killed Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani, the head of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Quds Forces, in a strike in Baghdad, days after Iranian-backed militia supporters stormed the U.S. embassy. Iran followed up with a strike on bases on Iraq housing U.S. troops, but it resulted in no deaths or injuries.

The U.S. subsequently responded with a fresh wave of economic and diplomatic sanctions against Tehran’s already faltering economy. Those are on top of the series of sanctions imposed by the U.S. since it pulled out of the JCPoA in 2018.

European countries objected to the U.S. decision to pull out of the compact, and have tried to keep the accord alive. But with Iran’s violations, that support has been wavering. U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson said last week that the deal should be replaced by a new deal negotiated by President Trump.

The Ayatollah’s rant came hours after he conducted Friday prayers in Tehran for the first time since 2012, and used the platform to rip into the U.S. for its aggressive stance on Iran.

“These contemptible governments are waiting to bring the Iranian nation to its knees,” Khamenei said. “America, who is your elder, your leader, and your master, was not able to bring the Iranian nation to its knees. You are too small to bring the Iranian nation to its knees.”

He appeared to mock Trump and others who had backed the protesters marching in the streets against Khamenei, dismissing “these American clowns who falsely and despicably say that they are standing with the Iranian people.”

“You are lying,” he said. “If you do stand with the Iranian people it is because you want to stick your poisoned dagger into the back of the Iranian nation. Of course you haven’t been able to do that so far, and you won’t be able to do a damn thing.”

Polish investigators fear a pig farmer, last seen on December 31, may have been devoured by his own livestock after a neighbor discovered bones on the property, reports say.

Lubin District Prosecutor Magdalena Serafin told Gazeta Wrocławska that remains believed to be that of the farmer, who was said to be in his seventies, were found eight days after the man was last seen on his farm in Lubin, a town about 260 miles west of Warsaw.

MISSING MAN WAS EATEN BY HIS OWN ‘AGGRESSIVE’ DOGS, POLICE SAY

‘We do not know the exact date, but in the period between December 31 and January 8 the victim was eaten by pigs,” Serafin said, according to a translation.

A neighbor reportedly called law enforcement after discovering the remains of a man while going to fetch water from a well nearby.

It was not immediately clear how the man died – officials suspect either a heart attack or a fall– but it reportedly was clear that the pigs fed on him. The animals were said to simply roam freely through the yard.

Progress is being made in swaying European nations to get tough with Iran, U.S. Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell said Saturday.

Appearing on “Cavuto LIVE,” Grenell said German Secretary-General Paul Ziemiak’s announcement that Germany and other European nations should move forward with sanctions on Iran marked a “real switch” from when Europeans were “going around the situation.”

TRUMP SAYS IRAN ‘APPEARS TO BE STANDING DOWN,’ MISSILE STRIKES RESULTED IN NO CASUALTIES

“Now the Europeans are talking about whether or not they should even be continuing in the [Iran nuclear deal] because of what they have seen from the Iranian regime. So, I think that we’re in a fundamentally different place and a better place,” Grenell said.

TRUMP SPEAKS TO NATO SECRETARY AFTER URGING WORLD BODY TO TAKE ON GREATER ROLE IN MIDEAST CONFLICT

On Wednesday, President Trump spoke to the secretary-general of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, following the president’s nine-minute speech earlier in the day urging the organization to take a larger role in quelling strife in the Middle East.

A White House spokesman said Trump spoke to Stoltenberg and “emphasized the value of NATO increasing its role in preventing conflict and preserving peace in the Middle East,” according to Politico.

After speaking, Trump and Stoltenberg “agreed that NATO could contribute more to regional stability and the fight against international terrorism” and said they would be “in close contact on the issue,” according to a readout of the call.

Grenell echoed the president’s pleas: “We see that Iran is supporting terrorism, so let’s use diplomacy … through sanctions and through other economic means, to bring the Iranians to the table.”

He told host Neil Cavuto that the European partners are very slow in coming around and taking action, which was one of the reasons he wanted to go to Germany and start prodding.

“One thing that is very clear … is that they can’t stay in some of these theaters unless the United States is there,” Grenell said. “When President Trump very bluntly says you know, ‘you’re welcome to form an international coalition and replace us, they immediately say well we can’t do that. We need the United States. And, so these are conversations that we have to have to push for them for greater participation.”

UK woman in Cyprus gang rape case gets suspended sentence after making up claims, authorities say

A Cyprus court on Tuesday handed a four-month suspended sentence to a 19-year-old British woman who was found guilty of public mischief after authorities said she made up claims that she was raped by up to a dozen Israelis.

The woman continues to insist that she was raped and that she was coerced into withdrawing her statement. Her lawyers say she will appeal.

Judge Michalis Papathanasiou said although the public mischief charge was a serious offense, he decided to give the woman a “second chance” because she admitted through her lawyers during mitigation that she made a mistake in making the false rape claim.

He also cited other reasons, including her young age, immaturity, clean criminal record, personal circumstances, psychological condition and the fact that she had already spent a month in detention during the six months that legal proceedings including her trial lasted.

The judge said he also took into account that the huge publicity that her case has received in U.K. and Israeli media had weighed against the woman, who had to put her academic career on hold as she was due to start university in September.

Papathanasiou also fined the woman 140 euros ($156) and told her defense lawyers that the sentence could be activated if she commits another serious offense within three years.

Under Cyprus law, public mischief carries a maximum one-year prison term and a 1,700-euro ($2,000) fine.

The woman’s mother told reporters that she was “very relieved to be going home” after months of legal proceedings. Despite the suspended sentence, she said defense lawyers would try to overturn the conviction so that it’s expunged from her permanent record.

British lawyer Lewis Power, who’s part of the woman’s defense team, said an appeal would be filed with Cyprus’ Supreme Court and possibly with the European Court of Human Rights for “elements of this case which did not result in a fair trial.”

“(The woman) intends to have a positive outlook to move on from this process, not to let this process ruin her life,” Power told The Associated Press. “She’s delighted today, not just for herself, but for the impact that this case has had on all those women that are the subject of sexual assaults around the world.

She said she was “inspired and motivated” by the public support her daughter received from the U.K., Israel, and Cyprus.

BRITISH WOMAN, 19, COULD FACE PRISON AFTER CYPRUS COURT FINDS HER GUILTY OF LYING ABOUT GANG RAPE

The case drew widespread interest in the U.K. and Israel after initial reports that the woman was the victim of a gang rape evolved into her being charged with making up claims of rape. The guilty verdict also triggered [a] strong reaction from activist groups.

The woman insisted that she was raped in a hotel room at a coastal resort town on July 17 and that she was forced to sign the retraction 10 days later while under police questioning. All of the Israelis, aged 15-20, were then released and allowed to return home.

Reading his verdict last week, Papathanasiou said the defendant didn’t tell the truth and tried to deceive the court with “evasive” statements in her testimony.

The judge said the woman had admitted to investigators that she made up the claims because she was “ashamed” after finding out that some of the Israelis had videoed her having consensual sex with her Israeli boyfriend on their mobile phones. He had also said her admission was “the only time the defendant told the truth.”

While the judge was reading his sentence, a noisy group of demonstrators who showed up to support the woman chanted slogans outside the courthouse including, “Cyprus justice, shame on you” and “Stop blaming the victim.” Many cheered when they heard that the judge handed down a suspended sentence.

Anna Kleiman, of the Israeli activist group LOTEM, called the woman’s conviction “disgraceful” because it leaves her with a criminal record and makes it difficult for her to “pursue her dreams.”

“This is shameful that she was even suspected for the beginning and it’s unbelievable. We are furious,” Kleiman told the AP.

Nir Yaslovitzh, who represented some of the Israelis in the case, had called for a harsh sentence but said it sufficed that the court convicted the woman.

“We respect the court’s decision. What was important to us was that the woman would be convicted and the version told by the clients I represented would be accepted,” he said.

Power said it remains to be seen if the “triumphalism” that some of the Israelis exhibited on their return to Israel after their release from Cyprus police custody were the actions “of people who were innocent of a crime.”

Berlin police block activists from dismantling left-wing installation said to hold Holocaust victims’ remains

Amid rising anti-Semitism in Europe, local Jewish activists in the liberal capital of Germany said they’re upset that Berlin police stopped them from dismantling an installation made by left-wing artists which allegedly held remains of victims of the Holocaust.

The Performance Art Committee, a group whose members included both Jewish and non-Jewish activists, said about 20 of its members attempted to cut down a pillar holding an urn that the left-wing Center for Political Beauty placed in front of German parliament last month.

The International Auschwitz Committee condemned the installation last month. Auschwitz survivors were “aghast at this installation, which hurts their feelings and the eternal peace of the dead of their murdered relatives,” the committee said.

The Center for Political Beauty, which has been known for its provocative stunts, said the urn contained soil from 23 locations near Nazi death and concentration camps in Germany, Poland and Ukraine where the remains, including ashes, of Holocaust victims were dumped.

The group said it didn’t open any graves.

“We only looked for earth-covered human remains that were hidden by the Nazis in the surroundings of the former death camps,” it said last month.

Jewish groups said regardless of whether the urn contained actual remains, the stunt was a sign of deep disrespect to the victims.

Berlin police spokesman Martin Halweg confirmed to The Associated Press that a member of the Center for Political Beauty had submitted a criminal complaint for property damage to police.

Officers at the scene recorded the identities of four people, and then ordered them to leave the site, which they did, he said. The pillar remained stable, Halweg added.

Following a public outcry, the Center for Political Beauty issued a partial apology for hurting the feelings of Holocaust survivors and victims’ families, but defended the purpose of the stunt, which it said was to highlight the ongoing need to examine Germany’s Nazi past and the recent revival of the far-right.

British woman, 19, could face prison after Cyprus court finds her guilty of lying about gang rape

A 19-year-old British woman who had accused a dozen young Israelis of gang-raping her at a hotel in Cyprus is now facing up to a year in prison after a court found her guilty of lying about the entire ordeal.

The woman, who was convicted Monday on a charge of causing public mischief, could also face a $2,000 fine, according to the BBC. But she is now arguing that police in the island country coerced her into making a false confession — a claim they are pushing back against.

Her lawyers plan to appeal the verdict, telling the BBC that the court violated European human rights laws by basing their conviction in part on a retraction statement the woman gave while she had no attorney present.

POLICE INVESTIGATING CYPRUS SERIAL KILLER RECOVER THIRD SUITCASE CONTAINING HUMAN REMAINS

The legal saga began in July when the woman alleged that 12 young Israelis gang-raped her at a hotel in Ayia Napa, a resort town in Cyprus. Her mother told the BBC last month that her daughter was visiting the country for work and started suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder following the alleged incident.

During the investigation, police in Cyprus arrested all of the men accused in the attack – but they later were released and allowed to return home.

Prosecutors reportedly told the court that 10 days after the woman made the gang-rape claims, she willingly wrote and signed a statement retracting them.

The judge presiding over the case said the woman initially falsely reported being raped because she was “embarrassed” that some of the men had used their phones to record her having sex, according to the BBC.

Yet her lawyers said the videos show her having consensual sex with one individual from the group while telling others who were trying to enter her room to leave, the station adds.

The woman was arrested and spent around a month in prison prior to the start of the trial, before being released on bail.

She has not been allowed to leave the island since and her family spent Christmas there with her, the BBC reports. Her sentencing is scheduled for early January.
