Mueller report: Russia has ‘more important things’ to worry about, Putin spokesman declares

Hours before Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report was released, concluding that there was no collusion between the 2016 Trump campaign and Russia, Vladimir Putin’s official spokesman said the Kremlin had more important things to worry about.

“It is America that is looking forward to the report’s release, but we aren’t,” Dmitry Peskov said Thursday, according to Russia’s TASS news agency. “This is not an issue for us, it is not a thing that interests us or causes us concern.

READ THE ROBERT MUELLER REPORT

“All the reports on the matter that have been released so far contain nothing but cursory statements,” he continued, adding “We have more interesting and important things to do”.

Attorney General William Barr, held a press conference Thursday morning ahead of the release of the redacted report and repeated Mueller’s conclusions that the investigation found no evidence of collusion between Russia and Trump campaign officials in the 2016 presidential election.

MUELLER REPORT SHOWS PROBE DID NOT FIND COLLUSION EVIDENCE, REVEALS TRUMP EFFORTS TO SIDELINE KEY PLAYERS

TRUMP DECLARES VICTORY AS MUELLER REPORT DROPS: ‘NO COLLUSION, NO OBSTRUCTION’

The Mueller report confirmed that the Russian government did seek to interfere in the election, using a Russian troll farm to “sow social discord among American voters through disinformation and social media operations”. The GRU, Russia’s military intelligence agency also carried out an effort to “hack into computers and steal documents and emails from individuals affiliated with the Democratic Party and the presidential campaign of Hillary Rodham Clinton for the purpose of eventually publicizing those emails.”

These materials were then transferred to Wikileaks so they could be published.

Earlier this month, Putin dismissed the Mueller report as “complete nonsense”.

“It was clear for us from the start that it would end like this,” he told an audience in Saint Petersburg. “A mountain gave birth to a mouse.

“I’ve been telling you this all along. We said from the start that this infamous commission of Mr Mueller’s would not find anything because nobody knows this better than us. Russia did not meddle in any elections in the United States. There was no collusion, as Mr Mueller said, between Trump and Russia.”

Trump, for his part, said Thursday morning as the report dropped that “this should never happen to another president again.”

“I’m having a good day, too, it’s called ‘no collusion, no obstruction,’” he said in remarks for the Wounded Warrior Project Soldier Ride, at the White House. “There never was by the way, and there never will be.”

Thieves in Kenya had one goal on Tuesday – steal as many guns and ammunition as possible from an unguarded police station while the officers went to a nearby mall to watch soccer superstars Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in the UEFA Champions League quarter finals.

The robbers walked away with three rifles and nearly two dozen rounds of ammunition in Nandi.

Two stolen Vincent van Gogh paintings are back on display, 16 years after being swiped from museum

Two paintings by Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh stolen more than 16 years ago are finally back on public display after the pieces were recovered in 2016.

The paintings — “View of the Sea at Scheveningen” and “Congregation Leaving the Reformed Church in Nuenen” — were stolen from the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam in December 2002, The Guardian reported. The works of arts were completed between 1882 and 1885.

VINCENT VAN GOGH DISCOVERY: PREVIOUSLY UNKNOWN DRAWINGS BY DUTCH MASTER IDENTIFIED

Octave Durham and Henk Bieslijn stole the works of art after breaking into the museum. The “View of the Sea at Scheveningen” was damaged during the robbery and a corner was torn off. Durham was convicted after his DNA matched strands of hair in a hat he dropped at the scene.

Raffaele Imperiale, a mafia boss, purchased the ill-gotten paintings in 2003 for around $393,527. Durham used the money to splurge on motorbikes, vacations and a Mercedes E320. He was arrested in December 2003.

Imperiale admitted to prosecutors in Naples, Italy, that he had the paintings, which were discovered in his mother’s home.

It took two years to restore the paintings. Unlike “View of the Sea at Scheveningen,” the “Congregation Leaving the Reformed Church in Nuenen” did not sustain much damage. Both were fitted in new frames.

The two paintings can be seen at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.

Protesters who have blocked London roads and bridges for more than three days say they will escalate their civil disobedience campaign if the British government doesn’t step up action against climate change.

Hundreds of demonstrators have blocked sites including Waterloo Bridge over the River Thames and the Oxford Circus and Marble Arch intersections since Monday.

The protest sites have sprouted tents, sound systems and even an ice cream van. Traffic is snarled and bus routes have been disrupted, to the frustration of commuters.

Police have made more than 420 arrests.

Gail Bradbrook of protest group Extinction Rebellion said Thursday that “more people are joining us all the time.”

Home Secretary Sajid Javid says protesters “do not have the right to break the law and significantly disrupt the lives of others.”

British cops filmed dancing with climate protesters are blasted by their bosses for ‘unacceptable behavior’

A pair of British police officers are being blasted by their bosses for “unacceptable behavior” Thursday after being caught on video dancing amongst a crowd of climate activists who have been snarling traffic and public transit in London this week.

Footage that surfaced on Twitter Wednesday showed the cops breaking out their dance moves to cheers and chants of “We love you!” by members of the Extinction Rebellion group.

“I’m disappointed by the video and the unacceptable behavior of the officers in it,” Scotland Yard Commander Jane Connors said after viewing it. “We expect our officers to engage with protesters but clearly their actions fall short of the tone of the policing operation at a time when people are frustrated at the actions of the protesters.

“We will be reminding officers of their responsibilities and expectations in policing this operation – however the majority of officers have been working long hours and I am grateful to them for their continued commitment,” she added.

CLIMATE CHANGE PROTESTERS BRING LONDON TO A HALT

Another video circulating on Twitter purportedly shows a police officer skateboarding on a bridge over the chalk message “CLIMATE JUSTICE NOW”, while others look on.

As of midday Thursday in London, the city’s busy Waterloo Bridge and other roads remain shut down because of the ongoing protests, which Extinction Rebellion says are aimed at getting the British Parliament to take further action on addressing climate change.

On its website, the group demands that Parliament “act now to halt biodiversity loss and reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2025”, while also pushing for them to “create and be led by the decisions of a Citizens’ Assembly on climate and ecological justice.”

Protesters claiming to be from the group – who deem themselves “rebels” — have glued themselves to trains and set up roadblocks throughout the U.K.’s capital.

The Metropolitan Police have detained more than 300 of them since Monday, according to the Associated Press, and financial analysts say the protests are causing business to plummet in central London. One analyst told the news agency that spending is down 25 percent there and on Tuesday alone, $16 million fewer dollars were spent than usual.

Some critics are also pointing out that despite wanting to save the Earth, the climate protesters are actually doing harm to it by snarling more environmentally-friendly public transit systems and forcing cars and buses to idle in gridlock traffic – and therefore belch exhaust into the atmosphere – as a result of their disruptions and roadblocks.

“It is absolutely crucial to get more people using public transport, as well as walking and cycling, if we are to tackle this climate emergency – and millions of Londoners depend on the Underground network to get about their daily lives in our city,” London Mayor Sadiq Khan tweeted about the protests.

He added that “targeting public transport in this way would only damage the cause of all of us who want to tackle climate change, as well as risking Londoners’ safety and I’d implore anyone considering doing so to think again.”

Farhana Yamin, a protester who was arrested on Tuesday, apologized to Londoners on BBC Radio 4 but insisted that such actions are justified.

“I totally want to apologize to people using public transport. But at the same time we need to take actions that are disruptive so everyone understands the dangers we’re facing right now,” she said.

An international animal welfare charity is locked in a spat with the Albanian government over three lions destined for a sanctuary in the Netherlands.

The Four Paws says the lions require proper medical care but remain caged in Albania due to Tirana’s “bureaucratic arbitrariness.” However, the government says its hands are tied by a lawsuit.

The lions were among 11 animals seized by authorities from a private zoo last October due to fears they were malnourished.

The zoo’s owner sued, but despite the lawsuit the government earlier this month sent to Germany a bear that was confiscated.

Four Paws says Thursday the government is now arguing the lions cannot be sent to the Netherlands because of the lawsuit.

The Environment Ministry, which is overseeing the matter, has made no comment.

Notre Dame’s Catholic worshipers feeling misplaced by this week’s massive blaze that destroyed the cathedral’s spire and roof will be welcomed in an “ephemeral cathedral” of wood in front of the Paris landmark until it reopens, Notre Dame’s chief priest said Thursday.

“We mustn’t say ‘the cathedral is closed for five years’ and that’s it,” Monsignor Patrick Chauvet told France’s CNews television channel. “Can I not build an ephemeral cathedral on an esplanade (in front of Notre Dame)?”

FROM THE FLAMES NOTRE DAME WILL REBUILD

Chauvet said the temporary wooden cathedral would host priests who could address the millions of tourists who flock to the 850-year-old Gothic cathedral each year.

Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo supports the idea and has agreed to give over part of the esplanade to the church for a wooden structure, Chauvet said.

TED CRUZ SLAMMED FOR JOKING ABOUT DISNEY’S $5M DONATION TO NOTRE DAME CATHEDRAL

The surrogate cathedral will be erected quickly, Chauvet said, though he did not give an approximate date.

On Monday, the fire raged through the cathedral for more than 12 hours, ultimately destroying its spire and roof but sparing its twin medieval bell towers. As the blaze roared, there was a frantic effort to rescue the monument’s “most precious treasures,” including the Crown of Thorns said to have been worn by Jesus. Recently released satellite pictures also show the extensive fire damage to Notre Dame.

Remarkably, no one was killed in the fire, which occurred during a Mass, after firefighters and church officials speedily evacuated everyone inside.

A day after the inferno, French President Emmanuel Macron set an ambitious goal of rebuilding the famed cathedral “even more beautifully” in five years. Since then, donations have been pouring in all over the world. It surpassed the $1 billion mark Wednesday,

NOTRE DAME CATHEDRAL DONATIONS SWELL PAST $700 MILLION MARK

“It is up to us to change this disaster into an opportunity to come together, having deeply reflected on what we have been and what we have to be and become better than we are. It is up to us to find the thread of our national project,” Macron said in a televised address to the nation.

Macron added that Monday’s fire “reminds us that our story never ends. And that we will always have challenges to overcome. What we believe to be indestructible can also be touched.”

On Thursday, workers were seen securing the support structure above one of Notre Dame’s famed rose windows with wooden planks.

A huge crane and renovation teams worked at the site even after authorities warned that some of the structure remains at risk. Firefighters walked on what the remains of the roof to inspect damage.

The island housing Notre Dame at the heart of the French capital remained largely empty and closed to everyone but residents. Businesses were shuttered and the usual tourist throngs were nowhere to be seen.

Passersby praised the French firefighters who helped save the overall structure of the cathedral.

Benedicte Contamin, who came to see the cathedral Thursday said she’s sad but grateful it’s still there. She said this is “a chance for France to bounce back, a chance to realize what unites us, because we have been too much divided over the past years.”

Paris is also planning a day of tribute on Thursday to 400 heroic firefighters who rushed into the inferno to save the 12th-century cathedral from collapsing and rescued its irreplaceable treasures from the bright orange burning blaze.

Macron will also host fire crews for a special gathering, while Paris City Hall will hold a separate ceremony in the fire brigade’s honor that will feature a concert and readings from Victor Hugo’s “The Hunchback of Notre Dame.”

A German teenager has gone on trial for the fatal strangling of another boy who allegedly refused his advances.

German news agency dpa reported that the trial opened on Thursday with the defendant’s lawyer reading a statement in which the 15-year-old acknowledged responsibility for the 16-year-old victim’s death.

Prosecutors accuse the teen of strangling the older but weaker boy after they agreed to meet in a wooded area last October.

The killing prompted widespread shock in Germany.

The teenager on trial hasn’t been named due to his age. He faces a prison sentence of up to 10 years if he is convicted of manslaughter. A verdict is expected in June.

Turkey’s president has lashed out at the Financial Times and other western media, accusing them of falsely portraying the economy as being on the brink of collapse.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan spoke Thursday after the Financial Times reported that Turkey’s Central Bank had bolstered its foreign currency reserves with short-term borrowed money, leading to concerns that Turkey may not be able to defend itself in the event of a currency crisis. The Turkish lira weakened some 2% against the dollar following the report.

Erdogan insisted the economy “is standing strong.” He claimed Turkey was being attacked because it was speaking out against injustices, including about refugees.

Erdogan said: “Oh Financial Times! What do you know about Turkey which hosts 4 million refugees? How many refugees are there in your country?”
