Islamic militants in Niger killed at least 25 soldiers during a Thursday assault on a military base, officials said amid a surge of jihadist attacks in the region.

Niger’s defense ministry said 63 jihadist fighters also died in the fighting in the town of Chinagodrar, which sits seven miles from Niger’s border with Mali. No one claimed responsibility for the attack, but it bore the hallmarks of an Islamic State-linked group that claimed to be behind a December ambush near the town of Inates.

The deadly attack comes days before French President Emmanuel Macron is expected to meet with Niger’s president, Mahamadou Issoufou, and other West African leaders.

Leaders from the former French colonies of Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania and Niger are due to discuss the French military’s role amid an increase in Islamic terrorist attacks. After intervening in 2013 to oust various jihadists from power, France has now launched its biggest overseas military operation in West and Central Africa to assist with the threat.

Mohamed Ibn Chambas, the special representative and head of the United Nations Office for West Africa, told the U.N. Security Council on Wednesday that attacks have increased significantly in frequency and in the number killed in Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger since 2016.

WHO IS THE FBI’S MOST WANTED TERRORIST? MEET JEHAD SERWAN MOSTAFA

More than 4,000 deaths were reported last year, a dramatic increase over the 770 in 2016, he said.

“Most significantly, the geographic focus of terrorist attacks has shifted eastwards from Mali to Burkina Faso and is increasingly threatening West African coastal states,” Chambas said.

In December, at least 70 soldiers were killed in Niger when Islamic militants attacked a military base in one of the country’s deadliest onslaughts in recent history.

That same month, France announced it killed seven Islamic extremists in Mali in its first armed drone strike. Four American military service members were killed in 2018 during an ambush by militants 30 miles from the sight of the December attack in Niger.

Who is Jarrett Stidham? 5 things to know about the Patriots quarterback

Tom Brady’s future with the New England Patriots is in doubt as he has made clear that he wants to keep playing but unclear whether it is with the same organization he played with for two decades.

Jarrett Stidham appears to be the quarterback waiting to take the reins should Brady either retire from the Patriots or decide to play for another team in 2020.

Stidham has not been in the NFL for long and therefore the average fan may not know who he is.

Here are some things to know about the 23-year-old quarterback before the 2020 season begins.

TOM BRADY’S NFL FUTURE: WHAT HE’S SAID ON RETIREMENT, THEORIES ABOUT HIM WALKING AWAY, POSSIBLE LANDING SPOTS

Jarrett Stidham played the 2017 and 2018 seasons with the Auburn Tigers after transferring from Baylor. Stidham led the Tigers to the Peach Bowl in 2017 and Music City Bowl in 2018. He helped get the Tigers to the SEC title game in 2017 only to lose to Georgia.

Stidham finished his career at Auburn with 5,952 passing yards and 36 touchdown passes. He declared for the NFL Draft after Auburn won the Music City Bowl over Purdue, 63-14.

2. THE PATRIOTS DRAFTED STIDHAM

The Patriots selected Stidham in the fourth round of the 2019 draft. He was the 133rd overall selection and fell behind quarterbacks Kyler Murray, Daniel Jones, Dwayne Haskins, Drew Lock, Will Grier and Ryan Finley. He was selected before Easton Stick, Clayton Thorson, Gardner Minshew and Trace McSorley.

Stidham talked about the role of backup quarterback in September in an interview with the team’s website:

“As the backup you have to know what you’re doing on our offense,” he said. “As the scout team you have to be able to know what to do to give the defense a good look. I think you have to take it as it comes. You have to study as much as you can on both things and make sure you’re doing both really well. That’s the thing about being the backup, you have to take a lot of mental reps. Whenever Tom is in there, I have to stand back and act like I’m up there actually doing it. If it’s the read, or whatever it may be, I’m just trying to get as many mental reps as possible so that when I do get a chance to go out there it’s not all foreign to me.”

Stidham made his NFL debut in Week 3 against the New York Jets. He was 2-for-3 with 14 passing yards. However, he threw an interception which was returned for a touchdown and he was sacked once.

He would appear in a game against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 5 and threw one pass: an incompletion. He played his second game against the Jets in Week 7 and took five snaps. He had two rushing yards.

Stidham didn’t play again for the rest of the season.

The pressure is on Stidham. (Photo by Fred Kfoury III/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images)

Stidham was the 11th quarterback to be drafted by Bill Belichick since he took over as coach. However, not many of the quarterbacks have had a chance to succeed behind Tom Brady. Jacoby Brissett, Jimmy Garoppolo, Ryan Mallett and Matt Cassel have had some success away from the Patriots, but Danny Etling, Zac Robinson, Kevin O’Connell, Kliff Kingsbury and Rohan Davey didn’t have any NFL success.

Cassel, Brissett and Garappolo have had chances to start for the Patriots while Brady was either hurt or suspended but all have gone elsewhere. There would be immense pressure on Stidham to have immediate success and continue the Patriots dynasty.

There’s been a lot of praise for Stidham. (Photo by Maddie Meyer/Getty Images)

While not much is known about Stidham or the Patriots plans for him for the future, he’s already received praise from teammates.

Duron Harmon told The Providence Journal: “You see throws out there that he makes where you’re just like, ‘Wow.’ You can tell he has the intangibles to be a good pro quarterback.”

Terrence Brooks told The Providence Journal: “He’s made some great throws in practice where everybody takes notice. Like, ‘Hey man, this dude is getting really good.’”

Josh McDaniels told ESPN: “He makes mistakes every day, like they all do as rookies, and he gets better. … He has a great attitude. A great mindset.”

Scout Jim Nagy told NBC Sports Boston: “No question … Jarrett’s got starter ability. No doubt in my mind. If they develop him right. Again, quarterback play is all about opportunity and situation. I think he’s in a good spot to really maximize that. I think Jarrett could definitely be a starter in the NFL.”

Jakobi Meyers told NBC Sports Boston: “I know if we’re doing scout team or something, he makes some throws where it’s not really our offense and he’s just showing his arm off, he’s made some pretty crazy throws. Even when he’s in our offense. When we’re actually in practice and Tom’s not going, he makes some pretty good throws then. I mean, he definitely has a lot of arm talent, and he shows it here and there.

7-year-old painter wows art world in Germany

A 7-year-old painter has taken the German art world by storm.

Mikail Akar, who was born in Cologne, is an expressionist art prodigy whose paintings are now selling for thousands of dollars across the world.

“At just 7 years old, he is established in the art world. There is interest from Germany, France and the USA,” his father and manager, Kerem Akar, told AFP.

The child’s talent was reportedly discovered when his dad gave him a canvas and some paint for his fourth birthday.

“The first picture looked fantastic, and I thought at first that my wife had painted it,” Kerem Akar said. “I thought maybe it was just coincidence, but by the second and third pictures it was clear he had talent.”

One of Mikail’s pieces, produced in collaboration with Germany and Bayern Munich football star Manuel Neuer, recently sold for $12,000.

The child told AFP that he idolizes Jackson Pollock, Michael Jackson and Jean-Michel Basquiat. His work can be seen on his Instagram page, which is also managed by his father.

“When I’m older, I want to be a football player,” Mikail said, discussing a recent 8-0 victory with his school team.

His father also explained that he and his wife don’t push their son, that they turn down many requests and that they try to shield him from the trappings of fame.

“He only paints when he wants to. Sometimes that is once a week, sometimes once a month,” his father told AFP.

Diana Achtzig, director of the Achtzig Gallery for Contemporary Art in Berlin, told the AFP that she was impressed by Mikail’s “imagination and variation.”

Ex-Obama DHS Secretary Jeh Johnson: Trump had ‘ample constitutional authority’ to take out Soleimani

Former Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson defended President Trump’s order to kill Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani via drone strike last week, as members of the House prepared to vote on a War Powers Resolution meant to restrict Trump’s ability to take further military action without congressional approval.

“What I have said is that under existing [Justice Department] Office of Legal Counsel [OLC] opinions on the president’s constitutional authority to engage the armed forces without a congressional authorization, if you read those opinions, he had ample constitutional authority to take out General Soleimani, if you regard that as an isolated strike,” Johnson said on “Your World” Thursday. “What these OLC opinions say is that the president can take lethal force so long as it’s short of war if it’s in the important national interest. And this and this operation was.”

PENCE RESPONDS TO GOP SEN. LEE’S CRITICISM OF IRAN INTEL BRIEFING: SOLEIMANI STRIKE PREVENTED ‘IMMINENT ATTACK’

Some of the president’s critics have accused him of starting a war while Trump has assured Americans that the strike was justified and not intended to instigate a wider conflict.

Johnson, who led DHS for most of Barack Obama’s second term, told Cavuto that the Executive branch must brief Congress even if it does not need lawmakers to authorize a declaraton of war.

“It’s Congress’s prerogative to authorize war. Congress is therefore entitled to know what the justification for military force is, even if they don’t vote a congressional authorization,” Johnson said. “Even if the president had authority under his commander-in-chief constitutional authority to take action, it’s incumbent upon the executive branch to brief the congressional branch on what’s happening.”

The former DHS secretary also warned of a cyber response from Iran as part of their retaliation for Soleimani’s death.

“We have to consider cyber warfare, cybersecurity to be part and parcel of armed conflict these days,” Johnson said. “And what DHS is telling us and telling critical infrastructure [is] be prepared. Be extra vigilant. Test your systems because we could be in for a bumpy ride.”

Fox News Poll: Biden and Sanders vie for lead in Nevada, Biden tops Trump

Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders remain the top picks for the Democratic nomination among Nevada caucusgoers, while Elizabeth Warren fades and Tom Steyer gains momentum. In the general election contest, the latest Fox News Poll of Nevada voters shows Democrats besting President Trump — but only Biden has a lead outside the poll’s margin of error.

First, in the race for the Democratic nomination, Biden tops Sanders by 23-17 percent among Democratic caucusgoers, with both down one percentage point since November. Warren comes in at 12 percent, down from 18 percent — and ties with Tom Steyer for third. Steyer’s 12 percent is up from 5 percent two months ago.

Expect more shifts, as just over half of Nevada Democrats, 51 percent, say they could change their mind before the February 22 caucus.

The groups where Warren saw some of her biggest erosion include women, non-college degree whites, and political liberals.

CLICK HERE TO READ THE  POLL RESULTS

Support for Steyer is up across the board, with some of his biggest gains among nonwhites, voters with a college degree, and moderates/conservatives.

White caucusgoers prefer Biden (22 percent), over Warren (14 percent), Sanders (13 percent), and Steyer (11 percent).

Among Hispanics, Biden (24 percent) and Sanders (24 percent) outperform Steyer (12 percent) and Warren (11 percent).

Biden’s best group is voters over age 65, while for Sanders it’s those under 30, for Warren it’s liberals, and moderates for Steyer.

By a 51-39 percent margin, caucusgoers prefer a candidate who will fundamentally change how the political system works in Washington over one who will restore the system to how it was pre-Trump administration.

Biden is the clear favorite among voters wanting to restore the system, while those preferring change give Sanders a slight edge, although their support divides between the top four.

“The fact that Nevada Democrats have a clear preference for fundamental change could make it difficult for Biden to grow his support as we get closer to caucus day and decision time approaches,” says Chris Anderson, a Democratic pollster who conducts the Fox News Poll with Republican Daron Shaw.

In potential matchups among all Nevada voters, Biden leads Trump by 8 points (47-39 percent) and has the only lead outside the poll’s margin of error. Sanders is up by five over Trump (46-41), and both Warren (43-42) and Pete Buttigieg (41-40) top him by one point. In each case, there are enough undecided/third-party voters to shift the race either way.

“The days of Nevada as a linchpin of Mountain West conservatism are gone,” says Shaw. “But it’s still a state that can go either way. Trump is essentially running even among the 53 percent of voters who are extremely interested in the race; that indicates the race is very tight.”

In 2016, Hillary Clinton edged Trump by 48-46 percent to win Nevada.

The poll finds 45 percent of Nevada voters approve of Trump’s job performance, while 53 percent disapprove.

In addition, they split on impeachment, as 46 percent think the Senate should remove him from office, while 47 percent disagree.

Sixty-two percent of Nevadans favor expanding Medicare so every American can buy into it if they want. That’s far more than the 36 percent who favor ending private insurance and moving to a government-run health care system.

Among Democratic caucusgoers, 77 percent favor expanding Medicare and 50 percent support moving to a single-payer system.

Conducted January 5-8, 2020 under the joint direction of Beacon Research (D) and Shaw & Company (R), this Fox News Poll includes interviews with 1,505 Nevada voters who spoke with live interviewers on both landlines and cellphones. Interviews were offered in English and Spanish. Respondents were randomly selected from a statewide voter file, and 635 were screened to identify potential participants in the Democratic caucus. The poll has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 2.5 percentage points for all registered voters and plus or minus 4 points for Democratic caucusgoers.

Buttigieg faces backlash for suggesting America’s ‘tit for tat’ with Iran responsible for downed airplane

Former South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg is facing intense backlash for suggesting that America’s “tit for tat” with Iran is responsible for the downed Ukrainian airplane.

The Ukrainian passenger plane that crashed shortly after taking off from Tehran’s international airport Wednesday was shot down by mistake by an Iranian anti-aircraft missile, Pentagon officials told Fox News.

Officials said U.S. intelligence increasingly points at the airliner being accidentally struck by a Russian-made missile, killing all 176 people on board the flight, just hours after Iran fired more than a dozen ballistic missiles targeting two military bases housing American and coalition troops.

However, Buttigieg’s response to the latest developments appears to place blame on both the U.S. and Iran for Iran’s accidental firing.

DEM LAWMAKER REPORTEDLY SAYS IRAN DOESN’T HAVE ‘CRAZY LEADERS’ UNLIKE US, SPARKING BACKLASH

“Innocent civilians are now dead because they were caught in the middle of an unnecessary and unwanted military tit for tat,” Buttigieg tweeted. “My thoughts are with the families and loved ones of all 176 souls lost aboard this flight.”

The tweet was pummelled on social media as critics slammed the 2020 presidential hopeful for placing blame on both the U.S. and Iran for the regime’s deadly missile firing.

“Uh, Pete, they weren’t ‘caught in the middle.’ They were shot down BY IRAN. Military incompetence by the leading state sponsor of terrorism. Just because Dems hate Trump doesn’t justify false equivalence w/ Iran. Soleimani was a brutal terrorist who killed hundreds of Americans,” Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, reacted.

“Nope. Nope. Nope,” The Dispatch senior editor David French hit back. “Iran launched a missile strike against our own troops, and then blundered by shooting down a civilian airliner when it wasn’t even under attack. That’s the story. This is on Iran.”

CNN HOST S.E. CUPP QUESTIONS IF US STILL A ‘RATIONAL ACTOR’ AMID IRAN TENSIONS

“If these reports are true, it means this airliner filled with hundreds of people was shot down by Iran just after Iran fired upon bases housing U.S. soldiers in Iraq. The U.S. did not fire back that night or since. There was no ‘in the middle.’ It was Iran. Iran did this. Period,” Washington Examiner reporter Jerry Dunleavy similarly stated.

“If running for president doesn’t work, Mr. Mayor, you should apply to be a host, correspondent, or even president of Iranian state-run @PressTV,” NewsBusters managing editor Curtis Houck quipped.

Giuliani: Supreme Court should step in and declare Trump’s impeachment ‘unconstitutional’

President Trump’s personal attorney Rudy Giuliani sounded off about the president’s impeachment Thursday, repeatedly calling on the Supreme Court to step in and declare it “unconstitutional.”

Giuliani argued that impeachment can only be pursued for “Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors,” referencing Article II, Section 4 of the Constitution, but the impeachment voted on by the Democratic-led House charged no such crimes.

“If this impeachment is not declared illegal it would remove the constitutional limitation of crimes on the power to impeach,” Giuliani explained on Twitter. “It would allow the House to impeach for policy differences or political leverage.”

Giuliani, in an op-ed published in the Daily Caller, said the first article of impeachment “abuse of power,” is “not a crime of any kind, high or low.” President Trump asking Ukrainian President Volodymer Zelensky to investigate “bribery, extortion and money laundering” as well as allegations of Ukrainians illegally supplying information to Democratic Party officials was well within his rights, according to the former New York City mayor.

PRESSURE MOUNTS ON PELOSI TO TRANSMIT IMPEACHMENT ARTICLES, AS DEMS LOSE PATIENCE

The second impeachment article, obstruction of Congress, was based on the executive branch challenging proceedings and subpoenas “based on recognized legal privileges that were being violated,” Giuliani said.

“It would prevent a future president to raise any challenge to the most illegal, overbroad subpoena from any of the multitude of congressional committees and sub-committees,” if impeachment is not declared unconstitutional, Giuliani said on Twitter.

“No documents were destroyed, cellphones were not smashed with hammers, and servers were not bleached. They were preserved for a proper judicial review and decision of legality and constitutionality, hardly an impeachable offense,” he added.

Giuliani argued that though the Constitution was silent on the Supreme Court’s role in impeachment, former Chief Justice John Marshall established that “judicial review is implicit as the only logical answer to constitutional standoffs between the legislative and executive branches or between the federal and state governments.”

NYC woman who plotted terror bombing on law enforcement gets 15 years in prison

A New York City woman was sentenced Thursday to 15 years in federal prison for studying how to make bombs for a terrorist attack targeting law enforcement in the United States, according to reports.

Asia Siddiqui, 35, of Queens, admitted in federal court in Brooklyn that she and another woman looked online for recipes for homemade explosives and shopped for components at Home Depot with the intent to bomb government targets.

She was arrested in 2015 and pleaded guilty last year.

The other woman charged in the case, Noelle Velentzas, also of Queens, is scheduled to be sentenced March 5.

Prosecutors asked that Siddiqui be sentenced to two decades behind bars, saying she and Velentzas “followed and expressed a violent, warped version of Islam which, in their view, demanded that they teach each other and learn how to build a bomb.”

The women used the teachings of radical jihadist Samir Khan, who was a prominent member of Al Qaeda but is now deceased, as inspiration for their plots.

Prosecutors said Siddiqui wrote two poems and an article that were published in Khan’s magazine called “Jihad Recollections.”

In a poem called “Take Me to the Lands Where the Eyes Are Cooled,” Siddiqui wrote that she “taste[s] the Truth through fists and slit throats” and that there is “[n]o excuse to sit back and wait — for the skies rain martyrdom.”

“Had they succeeded in executing a bombing like the prior terrorist attacks they repeatedly discussed and celebrated, the result would have been catastrophic,” prosecutors wrote in a court filing.

Siddiqui and Velentzas discussed several prior terrorist attacks in the U.S. with a New York Police Department (NYPD) counterterrorism officer posing as a convert to Islam. The undercover agent had been assigned to mingle with young Muslims around the city and made recordings of the women discussing their plans.

Authorities said they discovered “tools of the trade for terrorists” inside the women’s homes, including propane gas tanks, soldering tools, jihadist literature and machetes.

“Lives were saved when the defendants’ plot to detonate a bomb in a terrorist attack was thwarted by the tireless efforts of law enforcement,” U.S. Attorney Richard P. Donoghue for the Eastern District of New York said in a news release.  “This is precisely the reason why countering terrorism remains the highest priority of the Department of Justice, and working with the FBI, the NYPD and our Joint Terrorism Task Force partners, we will continue to do everything possible to stay steps ahead of aspiring terrorists and their evil plans to harm Americans.”

Siddiqui’s defense attorneys argued that there had been no specific plot.

They said in court filings that her role in studying the explosive devices had been “inconsequential” and that the so-called terrorism enhancement in the case had distorted the “seriousness” of the crime.

“To construct a bomb from what Ms. Siddiqui had in her basement would have required the expertise of the fictional MacGuyver, and the claim that she was going to independently build her own explosive device is equally fictional,” the defense attorneys claimed.

Defense attorney Charles Swift said he respected the 15-year sentence, but added: “I still believe in the merits of the argument we made.”

Ford’s four-wheel steering system could make big trucks drive small

The F-Series truck may be going four-wheeling in a different way than usual.

Ford has filed for a patent on a rear-wheel steering mechanism that could make its big pickups feel smaller, as recently uncovered by PatentSwarm.com.

Four-wheel steering systems are used on a few performance models from brands such as Acura, Lexus, Porsche and Lamborghini and are aimed at improving both high-speed stability and making them easier to turn at low speeds, the latter of which is particularly advantageous for a large truck.

General Motors launched a Quadrasteer system on its full-size trucks in 2002 that reduced the turning circle by about 10 feet, but the feature was a costly option that didn’t sell well and was discontinued in 2005.

2020 FORD F-SERIES SUPER DUTY CLAIMS ALL THE DIESEL TOWING TITLES

Ford’s patent depicts its version begin used on an F-Series Super Duty and describes a system that includes an electric actuator mounted to the backside of the solid axle that turns the steering knuckles through a series of links and rods as an alternative to the more conventional rack-and-pinion setup used by GM.

Ford has not confirmed any plans to put it into production, but the filing suggests that it thinks it’s on to something with its take on the technology.

Ford just updated the F-Series Super Duty for 2020 without the feature, so it could be a while before we find out for sure, but a new F-150 is expected to debut in 2021 and there’s no reason it couldn’t use it, too.
