US Embassy in Spain warns sexual assault cases against Americans are on the rise

The U.S. Embassy in Spain has issued a new security alert warning Americans about the “steady increase” in the number of sexual assaults in the country over the past five years.

The figures, based on information provided by the Spanish Ministry of Interior, “includes a rise in sexual assault against young U.S. citizen visitors and students throughout Spain,” the embassy says.

“U.S. citizen victims of sexual assault in Spain can find it very difficult to navigate the local criminal justice system, which differs significantly from the U.S. system,” the message states.

SPANISH PROTESTERS DEMAND CHANGE AFTER MEN ACQUITTED OF RAPING UNCONSCIOUS TEEN

Last month, three U.S. women in the city of Murcia alleged that they were sexually assaulted at a New Year’s Eve party, the BBC reported, citing the El Pais newspaper.

In November, the streets of Spain were filled with protesters – mostly women of all ages – as they demanded the country’s laws be changed after five men were acquitted of raping an unconscious 14-year-old girl.

The court found that because the victim had drunk alcohol and smoked marijuana before the attack, she “could not accept or reject the sexual relations.” The men, it said, were therefore able to have sex with her without using violence or intimidation – an element required under Spanish law for a crime to be a sexual assault or rape.

The assault took place in 2016 in Manresa, a town in northeastern Spain, at an abandoned factory where a group of young people had been drinking and using drugs.

Two suspects were arrested in downtown Kansas City early Wednesday morning after police said they drove through the barricades of the Chiefs Kingdom Champions Parade and were “headed for the crowd.”

Kansas City Police received reports around 8:15 a.m. local time that a car broke through the barrier on the north side of the route somewhere near its start on Sixth Street and Grand Boulevard.

Officers from multiple agencies responded, engaging in a brief car chase.

Several videos posted on social media showed the car heading south on the route at a high rate of speed before it turned on Pershing Road, where police say it was “headed for the crowd.”

The car eventually was stopped by several police vehicles ramming it.

Two suspects were taken into custody, but police said there were no weapons or “indications of terrorist activity” in the car.

Tomi Lahren on ‘beautiful moment’ Rush Limbaugh received Medal of Freedom: ‘He charted a path’

In one of the most emotional moments of President Donald Trump’s third State of the Union Address on Tuesday night, the president made the surprise announcement that he was awarding special guest and conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh the Medal of Freedom.

On Fox Nation’s live coverage of President Trump’s 2020 State of the Union, host Tomi Lahren described the significance of that moment to her.

“For many of us growing up with Rush Limbaugh and counting Rush Limbaugh as one of the great conservative voices really of our time, having Rush there… it was such a special moment for him.. it was so beautiful,” she said.

“Here tonight is a special man, beloved by millions of Americans who just received a Stage 4 advanced cancer diagnosis,” said the president in his address. “This is not good news, but what is good news is that he is the greatest fighter and winner that you will ever meet. Rush Limbaugh, thank you for your decades of tireless devotion to our country.”

Limbaugh, who announced on Monday that he was diagnosed with advanced lung cancer, acknowledged the cheers of the audience, smiled and choked back tears, as first lady Melania Trump secured the medal around his neck.

“I had an opportunity to speak with Rush,” Lahren recalled. “And it was such an honor to me because I grew up listening to Rush, and of course my whole family, and he’s so genuine and so kind and to me such a mentor.”

Wall Street Journal Editorial Board member Bill McGurn echoed that sentiment, saying that Limbaugh was clearly deeply moved by the honor.

“The beauty of the moment is that when the medal is put on him you know that to him — he’s a famous man, he’s a wealthy man — but that means something to him,” said McGurn. “Probably more than everything else, people can see that.  This means something to him because he loves America with all his heart.

“There’s some similarities between the president and Rush Limbaugh, Rush has taken a lot of heat for his stand,” McGurn continued. “A lot of names, people writing books about him.”

However, despite all that, McGurn argued, Limbaugh has made a historic contribution to American society.

SHOCKED: PANEL REACTS LIVE TO PELOSI TEARING TRUMP’S STATE OF THE UNION SPEECH: ‘THAT WAS HER POWER MOVE?”

“No one has done more to teach the American people about free markets, freedom than Rush Limbaugh,” he said. “One of the things that makes his show work, I think, is he doesn’t look down on his people. He treats them with respect and he engages them. And that’s why people love him.”

Fox News contributor and the host of “Reality Check,” David Webb, suggested that Limbaugh has been a trailblazer for conservatives in the media.

“Rush went in there when nobody really did this and he opened those doors,” said Webb.

“He charted a path,” added Tomi.

McGurn agreed, saying “He was an entrepreneur, in addition to everything else.”

In fact, Lahren attributed her career to the effort of people like Limbaugh.

“A lot of people who are too afraid to talk about their own values and their own conservatism, or whatever beliefs they hold, listen to Rush and they live through him… and I think we’re all sitting here on Fox Nation because of people like Rush. For him to be recognized tonight was a beautiful moment.,” she concluded.

Trump’s Middle East peace plan ‘will die’ before president, Iran’s top leader says

Iran’s top leader is predicting that President Trump’s Middle East peace plan, meant to solve the decades-long Israel-Palestinian conflict, “will die” in Trump’s lifetime, state media reported Wednesday.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei made the bold calculation in his first remarks since the proposal, which has been opposed by the Palestinians, was unveiled last week.

WHAT’S IN TRUMP’S MIDDLE EAST PEACE PLAN?

“This plan will die before the death of Trump,” he said. “Hence, the coming and going and expenditures for it, and unveiling it, is a stupid move.”

He also said Iran will continue to support Palestinian armed groups as much as possible, believing those organizations “will resist” the plan.

Meanwhile, Trump has touted the deal as the “most detailed proposal ever put forward” toward a lasting peace in the region, calling it “a win-win opportunity for both sides.”

The plan envisions a disjointed Palestinian state, with a capital in East Jerusalem, and turns over key parts of the West Bank to Israel. It also calls for more than doubling the amount of territory the Palestinians control with a number of land swaps.

TRUMP UNVEILS MAP OF PROPOSED STATE OF PALESTINE

However, it appears to side with Israel on key contentious issues that have bedeviled past peace efforts, including borders and the status of Jerusalem and Jewish settlements.

The plan would require the Palestinians to meet certain benchmarks – rooting out terrorism, stopping “pay to slay,” implementing steps toward free speech and political reforms – to become a state.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas dismissed the plan as “nonsense” and vowed to resist it. Netanyahu called it a “historic breakthrough” equal in significance to the country’s declaration of independence in 1948.

WHAT SETS TRUMP’S MIDEAST PEACE PLAN APART FROM PREVIOUS PROPOSALS? EXPERTS WEIGH IN

Since 1979, when the Islamic Revolution brought hardline Islamists to power in Iran, Tehran does not recognize Israel and supports anti-Israel militant groups like Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon.

The Palestinians seek all of the West Bank and East Jerusalem — areas captured by Israel in the 1967 Mideast war — for an independent state and the removal of many of the more than 700,000 Israeli settlers from these areas.

Neanderthal discovery sheds new light on human history

Scientists at Princeton University have made a stunning Neanderthal ancestry discovery that sheds new light on human history.

Neanderthal DNA has typically been associated with modern humans outside of Africa. However, by developing a new method for finding Neanderthal DNA in the human genome, the Princeton researchers have, for the first time, searched for Neanderthal ancestry in African populations, as well as those outside the African continent.

A paper on the research has been published in the journal Cell.

NEANDERTHAL BEACHCOMBERS WENT DIVING FOR SEASHELLS, SCIENTISTS DISCOVER

“When the first Neanderthal genome was sequenced, using DNA collected from ancient bones, it was accompanied by the discovery that modern humans in Asia, Europe and America inherited approximately 2 percent of their DNA from Neanderthals — proving humans and Neanderthals had interbred after humans left Africa,” the scientists explained, in a statement. “A comparable catalogue of Neanderthal ancestry in African populations, however, has remained an acknowledged blind spot for the field due to technical constraints and the assumption that Neanderthals and ancestral African populations were geographically isolated from each other.”

The new computational method for detecting Neanderthal ancestry, dubbed IBDmix, has already delivered results.

“This is the first time we can detect the actual signal of Neanderthal ancestry in Africans,” said co-first author Lu Chen, a postdoctoral research associate in Princeton’s Lewis-Sigler Institute for Integrative Genomics (LSI), who is co-first author of the study. “And it surprisingly showed a higher level than we previously thought.”

GRISLY DISCOVERY: BONES REVEAL NEANDERTHAL CHILD WAS EATEN BY LARGE BIRD

Researchers found that Neanderthal ancestry in Africans was not due to an “independent interbreeding event” between Neanderthals and African populations. Instead, they came to the conclusion that migrations of ancient Europeans back into Africa introduced Neanderthal ancestry into populations in the African continent.

By comparing data from simulations of human history to data from real people, experts also found that some of the Neanderthal ancestry detected in Africans was the result of human DNA introduced into the Neanderthal genome. “This human-to-Neanderthal gene flow involved an early dispersing group of humans out of Africa, occurring at least 100,000 years ago — before the Out-of-Africa migration responsible for modern human colonization of Europe and Asia and before the interbreeding event that introduced Neanderthal DNA into modern humans,” the scientists said, in the statement.

The study, which was funded by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences, was led by Joshua Akey, a professor at the Lewis-Sigler Institute for Integrative Genomics. The researchers acknowledge that they were able to analyze a limited number of African populations and hope that their findings will inspire further study.

CLIMATE CHANGE DROVE SOME NEANDERTHALS TO CANNIBALISM

Experts have gained fresh insight into Neanderthals in recent years. In 2018, for example, archaeologists in Poland identified the prehistoric bones of a Neanderthal child eaten by a large bird.

In another study released in 2018, scientists suggested that climate change played a larger part in Neanderthals’ extinction than previously thought.

SOME OF OLDEST NEANDERTHAL BONES HAVE BEEN DNA TESTED SHOWING MORE THAN 70 DIFFERENCES

Last year, researchers in France reported that climate change drove some Neanderthals to cannibalism.

In another study, experts studied seashells fashioned into tools that were discovered in Italy in 1949 to reveal how some Neanderthals had a much closer connection to the sea than was previously thought, according to a statement released by the University of Colorado Boulder.

The closest human species to homo sapiens, Neanderthals lived in Eurasia for around 350,000 years. Scientists in Poland report that Neanderthals in Europe mostly became extinct 35,000 years ago. However, there are a number of theories on the timing of Neanderthals’ extinction, with experts saying that it could have occurred 40,000, 27,000 or 24,000 years ago.

AOC says ‘violent racist’ Rush Limbaugh ‘cheapens the value’ of Presidential Medal of Freedom

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., slammed Rush Limbaugh, who was recently was diagnosed with cancer, as a “racist” on social media late Tuesday, saying he “cheapens” the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

AOC didn’t attend President Trump’s State of the Union address, claiming it would have legitimized what she saw as lawless conduct under his administration. But she offered her thoughts on Limbaugh receiving the honor to her 4.2 million Instagram followers with a streaming video.

RUSH LIMBAUGH ANNOUNCES HE HAS ‘ADVANCED LUNG CANCER’

“First of all, the Presidential Medal of Freedom is an extraordinarily sacred award. We’re talking about putting someone on the same level as Rosa Parks, for example, in terms of their contributions to American progress,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “Rush Limbaugh is a violent racist.”

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said Rush Limbaugh “is a violent racist” and “cheapens” the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Limbaugh stunned his 20-million member audience Monday with the announcement he’s been diagnosed with “advanced lung cancer.” He told listeners that the disease will keep him off the air on certain days when he’ll receive treatment.

Trump responded by inviting the conservative icon to the State of the Union address, where first lady Melania Trump then presented the medal and placed the award on Limbaugh – who was visibly emotional.

Ocasio-Cortez was not moved.

“To do it in the middle of a State of the Union, and not even dignify it with its own ceremony, as it has, there is all sorts of norms that are being violated,” she said. “Not just for people’s humanity but also, it truly just cheapens the value of it.”

Ocasio-Cortez then mocked Limbaugh for “pretending to be surprised,” calling his reaction to receiving the prestigious honor “such a joke.” The White House had announced Limbaugh as a guest of the president earlier Tuesday.

“He had to like, pretend that this was some kind of Oprah moment, was so disingenuous, and to do that, and to give it to Rush Limbaugh when there were plenty of people in that audience that have contributed positively to the fabric of American society, much more, frankly, than he has, it’s red meat to his base,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “Trump knows what he’s doing… he wants to assert that Rush Limbaugh is somehow on the same level as Rosa Parks, and it’s truly nauseating.”

Did you ever suspect in your heart that liberals were basically disorganized and incompetent? The kind of people who hate their dads and leave dirty dishes in the sink and have crumbs in their beds?

It turns out you had no idea. It’s so much worse than that. They’re a disaster.

BUTTIGIEG AND SANDERS LEADING IOWA DEMOCRATIC CAUCUSES, AS PARTY RELEASES INITIAL RESULTS AFTER MASSIVE DELAY

The people who want to control your health care couldn’t organize naptime for a six-year-old. They can’t find the airport. They’re baffled by the instructions of a washing machine.

What happens when you put them in charge of an entire caucus in Iowa? Well, the first thing they do is pay former Hillary staffer $63,000.00 to develop a vote-counting app that doesn’t work. Then they use the chaos that results to attack and humiliate their own voters.

And then they elevate a 38-year-old finance puppet and pretend he is the frontrunner. If there’s a short-term winner emerging from Iowa, it’s probably that candidate, Pete Buttigieg of South Bend, the hand-selected choice of Democratic donors to fight the Bernie Sanders insurgency.

Democratic leaders blew it spectacularly, therefore, Democratic voters must pay. Sense a theme here? That’s always the way it works. They screw up, you get punished.

Buttigieg already sees himself as anointed by God to take power, something he has been planning assiduously since eighth grade. He didn’t wait until the results were tabulated to declare a victory. He went ahead and did it anyway Monday night.

Pete Buttigieg, South Bend, Ind. mayor and 2020 Democratic presidential candidate: Looking out at you, and remembering how it felt to be an Indiana teenager, wondering if you would ever belong in this world. Wondering if something deep inside him meant that he would forever be an outsider, that he might never wear the uniform, never be accepted, never even know love.

And now that same person is standing in front of you, a mayor, a veteran, happily married and one step closer to becoming the next president of the United States.

Another child of privilege telling you how oppressed he is. Son of a college professor. Okay.

Pretty much nobody, meanwhile, thought Elizabeth Warren was going to win Monday night, and the results this afternoon confirmed that she didn’t, proving once again that even Democratic voters have standards, and there is, in fact, a god.

But Warren claimed victory Monday night nonetheless. In her speech, she made certain to brag about the illegal aliens her campaign had hired.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren. D-Mass.: Tonight is for every undocumented, unafraid organizer and volunteer who proudly knocked on doors to let the world know that the path to progress runs through courage, not fear.

Oh, cliche confirmed! It turns out it is true that illegal aliens do the jobs that Americans won’t do. Godspeed to them. As long as they’re not planning for long term employment with Elizabeth Warren — that gig won’t last.

Why does everyone on television hate these poor Iowans all of a sudden? It’s not like they’re powerful and menacing. Just the opposite – they’re just voters. The problem, of course, is that they are some of the few people left in this country who still believe it’s a democracy, and they’re annoying that way — and inconvenient.

The whole debacle Monday night was entirely unnerving for the press watching from their studios. It’s the home team they’re covering, remember, so when things go wrong in a Democratic primary, it hurts them personally.

Wolf Blitzer, CNN anchor: No results at all from the Iowa caucus. It is a huge, huge embarrassment for the Iowa Democratic Party.

Joe Scarborough, MSNBC host: Was there election interference? Did somebody try to hack into the app?

Jonathan Lemire, MSNBC political analyst: This is a disaster on every level. This is the first step. They botched it.

Van Jones, CNN political analyst: This is starting to feel like, you know, possibly a real debacle where if there’s some technical problems that they’re not disclosing …

David Chalian, CNN political director: We have to start asking the questions. Has it been infected in any way? Has there been any kind of interference? We have no — we don’t know that.

Al Sharpton, MSNBC host: Whatever the results come out, it will almost not matter because it will be under a cloud now. And what about the people of Iowa?

Chris Matthews, MSNBC host: The guy in the White House is chuckling all night here, showing the Democrats can’t even get a three-car funeral organized or whatever you want to call it.

Well, the last person leaving Des Moines, please turn out the lights. This has not been a success.

Oh, gosh, that doesn’t sound good. How bad was it Monday night? Well, Chuck Todd appealed to God Himself live on air. Here’s his prayer.

Reporter: We also need to talk about the Mike Bloomberg factors, which is —

Chuck Todd, MSNBC host: Oh my god.

Reporter:  — the fact that he is now waiting in the wings …

Todd: What an effing disaster.

Nicely put, Chuck. That’s exactly what it is.

But keep in mind, things weren’t always this way. For 50 years, the Iowa caucuses ran smoothly, using 19th Century technology. They had paper ballots, they phoned in the results.

And then the tech geniuses got involved. They promised to make it a lot easier and way more efficient. Just like iPads are going to make your kids smarter. How’d that work out?

Of course, you can’t complain about this in public; it’s unwise to criticize our overlords in Silicon Valley — those merchants have a brighter future who somehow make our lives worse, year by year. It can’t be their fault.

So instead, the people on TV decided to blame Iowa voters. You saw a parade of the smartest people in America telling you that the Iowa mess was proof that Iowa as a state shouldn’t be allowed to hold the first presidential contest anymore.

Democratic leaders blew it spectacularly, therefore, Democratic voters must pay. Sense a theme here? That’s always the way it works. They screw up, you get punished.

And by the way, those voters we just shafted, they explained Monday night, they’re racist. They deserve what they got and what we’re taking from them.

Matthews: Twenty-five percent of the Democratic voters are African- American, and they’re not really in the game. I mean, that’s really awful.

You talk about voter suppression. This is it. Jason is right. It’s voter suppression. You’re saying black people vote last.

More from Opinion

Sunny Hostin, co-host of “The View”: Iowa, you know, just isn’t representative of the Democratic tent, and that’s the problem that I’ve had. I mean, you know, it’s — if you look at the population, it’s about 90.7 percent white.

Van Jones: Why Iowa in the first place? It’s 90 percent white. You know, when you have a party as diverse as this to be in a state that’s not diverse, it is terrible.

Terry McAuliffe, CNN political commentator: Ninety percent of the caucus-goers today were white, so it’s way skewed out of line.

Zerlina Maxwell, MSNBC political analyst: The Iowa caucus is essentially the perfect example of systemic racism — 91 percent of the voters in Iowa are white.

The reason why you see a drop in turnout, I’m just speculating here, it could be perhaps that white children are not in the cages.

Oh, man. You thought you were just voting in an election. It turns out you’re participating in systemic racism. Take that, you hopelessly pallid Iowa Democrats.

Keep in mind that thousands of these now totally immoral voters spent the entire past year going door to door for their favorite candidates for free. Why did they do that? Because they cared.

In return, they’re being denounced by rich phonies like Terry McAuliffe, who, by the way, is famous in Washington mostly for not going to jail.

In fact, they’re one of the few remaining barriers between the party and its preferred vessels, like Pete Buttigieg and Mike Bloomberg. Psyched for that?

As if on cue Tuesday, Bloomberg announced that in the wake of Monday night’s meltdown, he is going to double his daily ad spending. Nothing like a crisis to seize an opportunity.

The anchors on CNN will be thrilled by the news. Finally, someone they can relate to.

John Mellencamp backs Mike Bloomberg, snubs fellow Hoosier Pete Buttigieg

Grammy-award winning singer and songwriter John Mellencamp announced his endorsement of Democratic presidential candidate Mike Bloomberg.

The singer, who also co-founded Farm Aid, stars in a TV ad for Bloomberg’s campaign that uses his hit song “Small Town” to highlight the candidate’s approach to revitalizing rural communities in the United States.

“The stakes are too high to not nominate the candidate who will take the fight directly to Trump,” Mellencamp said in a press release obtained by Fox News. “From small towns to big cities, Mike Bloomberg has the experience to represent all Americans. He’s a job creator, philanthropist, and true public servant, and I am confident that as president, he will restore America to a place we can be proud of once again.”

“John Mellencamp is one of the great voices of the American heartland — and the American experience that binds us together,” Bloomberg added in the release. “His words – from co-founding Farm Aid to fighting hunger and homelessness among veterans – represent America at its best. We had the opportunity to get to know one another through the film, ‘From the Ashes.’ He contributed a powerful song to the soundtrack, and the film raised awareness about the tragic toll that coal mining takes on local communities. He’s an American treasure, and I couldn’t be more honored to accept his support.”

The ad, released by the Bloomberg campaign on Tuesday, is even titled “Small Town” and will air across 23 states starting on Feb. 5. In it, Mellencamp sings the chart-topping hit song, which was released in 1985, while a narrator outlines Bloomberg’s plan to help small towns across the country.

“In small-town America, dreams hold fast, but good jobs seem like a thing of the past, and more and more of our kids have to leave in search of opportunity. Making small towns smaller,” the ad states.

Mellencamp, a lifelong Indiana resident, endorsing the former New York City mayor may come as a light blow to the candidacy of fellow Indiana resident Pete Buttigieg. The former mayor of South Bend has been in the 2020 presidential race for longer than Bloomberg and is among the top contenders for the party’s nomination in the general election.

Jason Chaffetz: Trump’s State of the Union ‘by far’ better than any of Barack Obama’s

President Trump’s State of the Union address on Tuesday evening was better than any of the ones delivered by former President Barack Obama, Fox News contributor and former congressman Jason Chaffetz said Wednesday.

Appearing on “Fox & Friends” with hosts Steve Doocy, Ainsley Earhardt and Brian Kilmeade, Chaffetz said that after sitting through 12 speeches during his tenure, this was “by far the best speech” he has heard.

“I thought it was clear, it was visionary, and it was emotional,” he noted. “And, I just — I can’t tell you how good it was.”

“And I sat through all the Obama speeches and they talk about what a great orator he was,” he told the “Friends” hosts. “This was, by far, a better speech.”

TRUMP TAKES ON ‘RADICAL LEFT’ IN DEFIANT AND DRAMATIC STATE OF THE UNION ADDRESS; PELOSI RIPS UP SPEECH

During his third State of the Union address, the president attacked socialism and left-wing policies, eliciting disgusted reactions from Democrats in attendance and prompting a furious House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., to rip up her copy of Trump’s speech as soon as it concluded.

Despite Democrats’ outrage and other dramatic “made-for-TV moments,” Trump also began to form what could be part of his reelection campaign message.

“As we work to improve Americans’ health care, there are those who want to take away your health care, take away your doctor, and abolish private insurance entirely,” the president remarked. “One hundred thirty-two lawmakers in this room have endorsed legislation to impose a socialist takeover of our health care system, wiping out the private health insurance plans of 180 million Americans. To those watching at home tonight, I want you to know: We will never let socialism destroy American health care.”

“This is what is happening in California and other states — their systems are totally out of control, costing taxpayers vast and unaffordable amounts of money,” Trump later added. “If forcing American taxpayers to provide unlimited free health care to illegal aliens sounds fair to you, then stand with the radical left.  But if you believe that we should defend American patients and American seniors, then stand with me and pass legislation to prohibit free government health care for illegal aliens!”

President Trump also took aim at some economic and foreign policies from the previous administration, telling the nation if they had failed to reverse them “the world would not now be witness to America’s great economic success.”

The address came one day before the Senate was slated to deliver its verdict in the impeachment trial that has divided the nation. Trump, who is widely expected to be acquitted, did not mention the proceedings directly in his speech.

Fox News’ Gregg Re, Chad Pergram, Jason Donner, Marisa Schultz, and Matt Leach contributed to this report.
