Track coronavirus’ global spread in real time with this interactive map

As the coronavirus outbreak prompts new measures to prevent it from becoming a pandemic, experts have created a map that tracks and visualizes its global spread.

The map, which was produced by researchers from at Johns Hopkins University, uses data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the World Health Organization, China’s CDC, and other sources.

The map tracks the total number of confirmed cases, the total deaths and the total recoveries — all in real time. Clicking on one of the larger red dots shows how bad the outbreak is in each particular region.

Along the lefthand side of the map, you can click each country that has reported cases to see their location.

This type of map could help to stem the tide of false or panic-inducing information that has spread since the outbreak’s start in December.

Thus far, the virus has spread to more than two dozen countries outside of China. There are 20,704 confirmed cases; there have been 427 deaths and 727 recoveries.

Secret Nazi World War II bunkers discovered near D-Day beaches

Researchers have uncovered secret Nazi bunkers in Normandy that were used against U.S. forces at the D-Day landings during World War II.

The discovery will be featured in the season premiere of “Expedition Unknown,” which airs on Discovery Channel on Feb. 5 at 8 p.m. EST.

“We discovered huge Nazi bunkers that haven’t seen the light of day in 75 years,” Josh Gates, host and executive producer of “Expedition Unknown,” told Fox News. “We were able to dig down and reveal the doors and go inside them – they are frozen in time, there are artifacts inside there.”

10 INCREDIBLE TECHNOLOGIES DEVELOPED FOR D-DAY

“It’s two large bunkers, each one of them contains three or four large rooms,” he said. “These are fairly large structures with hallways and multiple rooms, staircases.”

The bunkers are part of a complex known as the Maisy Battery that is about 2 miles inland from Omaha beach. When it was operational, the battery had a total of 14 huge guns, including 150 mm Howitzers.

Experts used LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology, which uses a laser to measure distances to the Earth’s surface, to study the site.

HOW D-DAY TECHNOLOGY MADE OPERATION OVERLORD A SUCCESS

LiDAR can prove extremely valuable to study structures that are hidden out of sight or in areas with thick vegetation. The technology is also used extensively in other applications, including autonomous cars where it allows vehicles to have a continuous 360 degrees view.

Researchers found evidence on the bunker’s ceiling that indicates it was burned, either during the firefight to capture the site or afterward. “It’s a strange feeling entering a place like that,” Gates added. “It’s exciting – on the other hand, it’s a somber, dark experience – this was a place that housed Nazi soldiers.”

The Maisy Battery is now open to the public, although, as Gates found, the complex is still revealing its secrets. The Battery was one of the largest German defensive positions in the landing area used by U.S. Forces on D-Day, according to its website, and was used to target the Omaha and Utah beachheads. The base was captured by U.S. Army Rangers.

HITLER’S SECRET NAZI WAR MACHINE REVEALED IN HIDDEN BASES

“The Maisy Battery played a crucial part in the events of D-Day,” explains its website. “The German Army had built Maisy in total secrecy, whilst letting the world know all about the nearby battery at Pointe du Hoc, a position that was under construction on D-Day.”

“It’s an overwhelming place to visit – this was part of one of the darkest chapters in modern history,” said Gates. “There’s all sorts of things inside the bunker, we discovered the remains of gas masks, ammunition, Nazi helmets.”

“What is unique is that a lot of the military installations around Normandy have been cleaned up,” he continued. “Maisy is one of the few places where you can explore trenches and beaches and get a sense of what it was like on D-Day.”

RUSSIAN SCIENTISTS UNEARTH REMAINS OF SECRET NAZI ARCTIC BASE

Excavations at the Maisy Battery will continue, according to the explorer, who notes that the site was once part of the infamous “Atlantic Wall” – a chain of defensive installations built by the German military on the coast of Northern France.

“A lot of Hitler’s Atlantic Wall was not on the sea,” Gates explained. “Big compounds like this were essentially forgotten to time.”

Researchers made another startling discovery during their filming in late 2019. The team was investigating the nearby wreck of the USS Partridge, a minesweeper that was sunk by a torpedo during the Normandy landings when they spotted German parachute mine.

HUNDREDS OF CHILLING ITEMS DISCOVERED AT NAZI MASSACRE SITES

Gates explained that the French navy was alerted, but noted that the area where the mine is located has been experiencing bad weather. “The idea is, in the coming months, to have a team from the French navy come out there and detonate the mine,” he told Fox News.

In other projects, experts have been looking to unlock the sinister secrets of hidden Nazi bases dotted across Europe.

In 2016, scientists at the Russian Arctic National Park discovered the remains of a secret Nazi base on the remote island of Alexandra Land, in the Franz Josef Land archipelago.

HOLOCAUST ESCAPE TUNNEL FOUND: PRISONERS DUG WITH SPOONS TO ESCAPE NAZIS

Researchers found German mines, hand grenade fragments, cartridge boxes, cartridges for Mauser 98 rifles and boxes for MG-34 machine gun feed belts. Parts of uniforms, overcoats, underwear, socks and pieces of footwear were also uncovered, as were sacks bearing the label of the German army.

Last year, local government officials announced the discovery of hundreds of chilling items at Nazi massacre sites in northwestern Germany.

Other excavations have also offered a glimpse into the horrific events of World War II. In 2017, experts uncovered two ritual baths in the remains of the Great Synagogue of Vilnius, in Lithuania, more than 70 years after its destruction during the Holocaust.

HITLER’S SECRET HISTORY REVEALED: STUDY SUGGESTS NAZI LEADER’S GRANDFATHER WAS JEWISH

In a separate project in Lithuania, a tunnel used by Jewish prisoners to escape the Nazis was discovered.

A recent study also suggested that Hitler’s paternal grandfather was Jewish, following years of rumors surrounding the Nazi leader’s family.

Meghan McCain shuts down Joy Behar’s ‘pipe dream’ that Trump will go ‘completely nuts’ during SOTU

“The View” co-host Meghan McCain downplayed the possibility on Tuesday that President Trump would go off-script during his State of the Union (SOTU) address.

Co-host Joy Behar said she hoped that Trump would “freak out, go off-script and be completely nuts. That’s what I’m praying for.”

Behar predicted that Trump would get scared with House impeachment managers Adam Schiff, D-Calif., and Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., sitting “right in front” during Trump’s speech.

“There’s no way this guy knows how to be presidential,” Behar said.

“I’m sorry Joy, this is a pipe dream and I love you but this is a pipe dream,” she said.

Instead, McCain predicted Trump is going “to take a victory lap over impeachment, he’s going to take a victory lap over the cluster that just happened in Iowa.”

She added that “in this moment, he’s doing pretty well. I just don’t think that the idea that he’s going to de-combust in front of the State of the Union is logical.”

2020 STATE OF THE UNION: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW AHEAD OF TRUMP’S ADDRESS

Trump’s SOTU address comes as the Senate prepares to vote on whether or not to acquit President Trump in the ongoing impeachment trial.

More from Media

The Republican-led chamber is expected to vote to acquit the president, ending a months-long process in which Democrats accused Trump of abusing his power in a phone call with Ukraine’s president.

In the lead-up to the SOTU, Trump panned the Democratic Party on Twitter and mocked their concerns about Russia helping him in elections.

“The Democrat Party in Iowa really messed up, but the Republican Party did not,” he said. “I had the largest re-election vote in the history of that great state, by far, beating President Obama’s previous record by a lot. Also, 97% Plus of the vote! Thank you Iowa!”

Photos show woman getting dangerously close to grizzly bear while taking pictures

Bears don’t care about getting the perfect shot.

A photographer shared shocking photos he took of a woman who got dangerously close to a grizzly bear in Montana while taking pictures. In the images, the woman is standing only a few feet away from the bear, which is looking directly at her.

While the woman’s friends and family all reportedly backed off, she was apparently too focused on the camera to notice how close the bear was. (Kennedy News)

Brian Curtice recently shared the photos with Kennedy News. According to him, the woman was with her friends and family at the time, but he says they all quickly moved away when the bear showed up. The woman, however, continued to look through her camera as the large predator approached.

FISHERMAN CATCHES STRANGE CREATURE OFF CONEY ISLAND: ‘WHAT THE HELL IS THAT?’

“When I shot the image I remember thinking, ‘I hope that is as close to her as the bear gets — and please let it be in focus,’” Curtice told Kennedy. “Initially I wasn’t frightened at all, I was too focused on getting good shots. I vaguely heard people around me begin clamoring and shouting and got a feeling people were moving rapidly away from me. That’s when it dawned on me the bear was closer than I might have thought it was and why I don’t think the girl knew how close it was.”

The man explained that the bear had been running up to the group and suddently stopped when it neared the woman. It apparently moved quicker than she realized, and the woman found herself alone with the bear.

“My adrenaline began kicking in and I shouted at her, but she was either too far away, too focused on taking pictures, or was employing a strategy of ‘don’t move and the bear won’t mess with me’ as she was a statue,” Curtice recalled.

“When it stopped for what seemed like forever I definitely became concerned for her, I knew it was up to the bear what happened next. I have to imagine the bear running up the hill startled her a bit and, as it came closer she was most likely focused on getting crisp close-ups,” he added.

Curtice doesn’t think that the woman realized how close the bear was. Fortunately, the animal ended up leaving the area without incident, though he heard the woman’s friends giving her a hard time about what transpired.

“When I’ve shown this image to others, most have been very critical of the woman, calling her foolish, but I think they are too quick to judge,” he said. “Knowing she was shooting a long lens, she was focused on getting ‘the shot’. And the bear… well, it did what bears do and ambled far more quickly than anyone there thought it would.”

A listing on LinkedIn for a Ford quality control engineer position has apparently revealed that the all-new, next-generation Mustang coupe will debut as a 2023 model. The job opportunity was first spotted and reported on by a member of the Mustang6G forum.

The description for the opening expressly says that it will involve working at Ford’s Flat Rock, Mich., factory on both the current Mustang, known internally as the S550, and the upcoming S650 set for 2023.

Ford has not yet revealed its plans for the next generation car, other than confirming that it is in the works and will be built at Flat Rock, and the company’s spokeswoman for manufacturing and jobs would not comment on the details in the LinkedIn listing.

The automaker has promised it will introduce a performance hybrid version of the Mustang at some point, however, and it’s more likely than not that would happen in concert with the introduction of an all-new platform.

Of course, there will be a new, very different Mustang before then. It’s the Mustang Mach-E all-electric SUV, which goes on sale late this year.

‘Bachelor’ contestant tells Peter Weber another female is ‘drinking excessively’ after ‘mental breakdown’

Bachelor” star Peter Weber can’t catch a break! After a golf cart accident left him with stitches, the series’ leading man learned one of the women competing for his love may be drinking heavily on set.

The drama became tense on Monday’s episode, which showed contestant Kelsey crying over the thought of Peter dating other women.

“I’m very sad,” Kelsey told another contestant, Tammy, via People. “I’ll never be okay [with him dating other people]. There’s never an end.”

“Honestly, I never expected to have feelings this strong,” she added. “It felt really good to get the validation I did tonight. It made me really happy.”

It wasn’t long before Tammy filled Peter in on Kelsey’s tearful confession.

“Kelsey had a mental breakdown because Sydney went off with you in a helicopter,” Tammy informed Peter. “She was sitting by herself crying her eyes out. I’ve seen multiple times that she’s drinking excessively.”

Peter then decided to confront Kelsey about her tears face-to-face.

“I was emotional but it wasn’t a breakdown,” Kelsey told the “Bachelor” star, according to the magazine. “I want you to know I didn’t have an emotional breakdown. I was sad, I was really sad.”

Kelsey continued: “It’s not like every day has been like that. It was just the first time after a one-on-one where my feelings were really strong.”

This isn’t the first time a contestant on the ABC dating show has been accused of drinking heavily. The show’s spinoff, “Bachelor in Paradise”  came under intense scrutiny in 2017 after a producer claimed Corinne Olympios was too drunk to consent to a sexual encounter in a pool with DeMario Jackson.

Meghan King Edmonds fires back at ‘parent police’ after sharing photo of her 3-year-old on melatonin

Former “Real Housewives of Orange County” star Meghan King Edmonds is firing back after people criticized her for letting her daughter take a sleep aid.

The star, 35, shared a photo of her 3-year-old Aspen sound asleep next to her on her Instagram Stories over the weekend.

“This angel found a melatonin gummy in mama’s purse leftover from our flight,” she wrote over the snap. “That was 2 hours ago.”

Representatives for King Edmonds did not immediately respond to Fox News’ request for comment.

For those unfamiliar, melatonin is an over-the-counter sleep aid supplement meant for people with insomnia or have trouble staying asleep. However, after users on social media criticized her for giving her kid the gummy, King Edmonds released a lengthy statement to People seeking to “give a full explanation to this silliness.”

“It was a melatonin gummy for kids, not a sleeping pill and certainly not for an adult,” she told the outlet. “It is completely safe.”

“Aspen found the one little gummy in a little baggie while rummaging through my purse,” King Edmonds added. “She asked me if she could have it and since it was nap time I told her ‘Yes.’ In fact, the recommended dosage for this particular brand of melatonin for kids is 2 gummies and I let her have one.”

The star went on to correct rumors that she deleted the post following the backlash, noting that it simply expired as all Instagram Stories do after 24 hours. She explains that her daughter was “fully supervised” by her the entire time and only took the gummy with her “express permission.”

MEGHAN KING EDMONDS REVEALS WHAT SHE WANTS IN HER NEXT PARTNER AFTER JIM EDMONDS DIVORCE DRAMA

“The post was cheekier because it’s Instagram that’s what social media is about: a glimpse into our lives — not usually the full story,” she said. “But, since the parent police are out in full force, I’ve felt compelled to give a full explanation to this silliness.”

Meghan shares Aspen with estranged husband, former MLB player Jim Edmonds, along with twin boys Hart and Hayes, 19 months.

Airline passenger makes ‘unfounded claim’ of carrying the coronavirus, forces plane to turn around

An airline passenger was reportedly arrested Monday after making an “unfounded claim” about being infected with the coronavirus aboard a recent WestJet flight bound for Jamaica.

As a result of the “unruly” passenger’s claim, the flight was forced to divert back to its origin at the Toronto Pearson International Airport, WestJet confirmed.

AIR CANADA FLIGHT LANDS SAFELY AFTER PASSENGER SAYS ‘TIRE WENT INTO ENGINE’

“WestJet flight 2702 from Toronto to Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, Jamaica, diverted back to Toronto due to an unruly guest,” the airline wrote in a statement shared with Fox News. “We sincerely apologize to the 243 guests who were affected by this unfortunate situation.”

WestJet added that law enforcement officials met the plane after it landed back in Toronto.

“Out of an abundance of caution, our crew followed all protocols for infectious disease on board, including sequestering an individual who made an unfounded claim regarding Coronavirus.”

The airline declined to provide additional information “due to the involvement of law enforcement.”

The unruly passenger, however, has been identified as a 29-year-old from Ontario, Canada, according to the CBC.

A passenger who spoke with the outlet also claimed to have seen him stand up from his seat, announce that he had recently been to China, and start claiming he had contracted the coronavirus. He also attempted to take a selfie or a video, the witness said.

“The flight attendants came, gave him a mask and gloves and just told him that he had to move to the back of the plane,” Julie-Anne Broderick told the CBC.

Shortly afterward, she said the plane made a “dramatic turn” over Florida and headed back to Toronto.

Upon landing, the man was arrested and charged with mischief. He’s due in court in March, the CBC reported.

What does atmospheric river mean? How the ‘Pineapple Express’ impacts the West Coast

Throughout the year, a weather system known as an “atmospheric river” can impact the West Coast of the U.S., causing flooding, heavy snow and possible mudslides.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration defines an atmospheric river as a huge plume of subtropical moisture that moves with the weather, carrying water roughly equivalent to the average flow at the mouth of the Mississippi River.

“Atmospheric rivers are relatively long, narrow regions in the atmosphere – like rivers in the sky – that transport most of the water vapor outside of the tropics,” the NOAA states. “When the atmospheric rivers make landfall, they often release this water vapor in the form of rain or snow.”

LAKE EFFECT SNOW: HERE’S HOW IT IMPACTS THE GREAT LAKES

The name “atmospheric river” came from research published in the 1990s by scientists Yong Zhu and Reginald E. Newell of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Atmospheric rivers are typically 250 to 375 miles in width but can come in “many shapes and sizes,” according to the NOAA, which adds that those with the largest amounts of water vapor and strongest winds may create extreme rainfall and floods.

“These events can disrupt travel, induce mudslides and cause catastrophic damage to life and property,” NOAA states.

Although they occur globally, atmospheric rivers are especially significant on the West Coast of the U.S., where they create 30 percent to 50 percent of annual precipitation and are linked to water supply, according to NOAA.

In 2019 an atmospheric river weather event pounded Northern California, inundating towns north of San Francisco with flooding and bringing the threat of mudslides to the region.

LIGHTNING SAFETY: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

A well-known example of a strong atmospheric river is called the “Pineapple Express,” which is capable of bringing moisture from the tropics near Hawaii over to the West Coast of the U.S.

While the weather systems are most well-known for causing damage, there are benefits to atmospheric rivers that are mostly weak and provide “beneficial rain or snow” crucial to the water supply.

“A series of atmospheric rivers fueled the strong winter storms that battered the U.S. West Coast from western Washington to southern California from Dec. 10–22, 2010, producing 11 to 25 inches of rain in certain areas,” according to NOAA. “These rivers also contributed to the snowpack in the Sierras, which received 75 percent of its annual snow by Dec. 22, the first full day of winter.”

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
