Anti-Trump demonstrators walk in circles in Senate building’s lobby, call for president’s conviction

Demonstrators gathered at the Hart Senate Office Building in Washington on Tuesday, where they walked quietly in circles to call for President Trump‘s conviction following last month’s impeachment vote — and protest the prospect of war due to escalated tensions between the U.S. and Iran.

Capitol police using a megaphone told the demonstrators that protests are prohibited within Senate office buildings — although no one was reportedly arrested.

“If you do not cease and desist you will be placed under arrest,” police told them, according to a video taken by Julio Rosas of Townhall.

The group wore black T-shirts with each person donning a single letter that spelled “Remove Trump,” when they each stood side by side in the building’s lobby. As they stood, numerous people behind them were seen walking in circles in a trance-like state.

Many appeared to have “No War” written on their hands in black ink — and held up there hands as if to say, “Don’t shoot!”

Because they were there on a weekday, and announced they planned to be in the building every day, Rosas asked the group’s spokeswoman if they had jobs.

She said they came from all different walks of life and some were from the local area.

Users on Twitter had a range of reactions to the protests.

Joe Biden saw Iran’s Clinton-era attack as ‘act of war’ requiring payback — now warns Trump about ‘escalatory move’

Former Vice President Joe Biden took some heat on social media this week after an old TV clip surfaced in which Biden called a deadly Iranian attack against U.S. airmen an “act of war.”

The U.S. can “take whatever action it deems appropriate,” the then-U.S. senator told ABC’s Sam Donaldson on “This Week” regarding Iran’s tanker truck bombing of the Khobar Towers, a U.S. Air Force military housing complex in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, that killed 19 airmen and injured more than 500 others.

Critics were quick to point out the difference between Biden’s rhetoric back then — when Democrat Bill Clinton was president — and his rebuke this week of the U.S. airstrike ordered by President Trump that killed top Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani last Friday, which Biden called a “hugely escalatory move.”

“Didn’t Joe just criticize President Trump for doing exactly what he states in this interview should be done?” one Twitter user wrote. “How can people stand this level of lies and hypocrisy? Either side? What have we become? Lie when it benefits you.”

“Hypocrisy just comes naturally to all Democrats,” another Twitter user wrote.

In his statement this week, Biden said: “President Trump just tossed a stick of dynamite into a tinderbox, and he owes the American people an explanation of the strategy and plan to keep safe our troops and embassy personnel, our people and our interests, both here at home and abroad, and our partners throughout the region and beyond.”

Michael Pregent: Iran fears US war – May have deliberately missed hitting Americans in missile attacks

Westlake Legal Group 694940094001_6120562340001_6120558759001-vs Michael Pregent: Iran fears US war – May have deliberately missed hitting Americans in missile attacks Michael Pregent fox-news/world/world-regions/iraq fox-news/world/conflicts/iran fox-news/world fox-news/us/military fox-news/politics/foreign-policy/middle-east fox-news/politics/defense/conflicts fox-news/politics/defense fox-news/person/donald-trump fox-news/opinion fox news fnc/opinion fnc edf812b9-0d90-50cd-9cff-b135869ceb5c article

Iranian missile attacks on two joint U.S.-Iraqi military bases Wednesday morning didn’t kill or injure any Americans, according to initial reports – and that appears to have been a deliberate move by Iran to avoid a retaliatory strike by U.S. forces.

Iran had to strike back at the U.S. in some way after an American drone attack ordered by President Trump killed Iranian terrorist Gen. Qassem Soleimani and other terrorists Friday morning in Iraq. But the leaders of the Iranian regime are smart enough to know that if they had killed Americans in their retaliatory attack, Trump would have responded with deadly force.

This could have sparked a rapidly escalating series of strikes and counterstrikes as each side hit back at the other and could have eventually led to a costly war that would have hurt Iran far more than the U.S.

IRAN LAUNCHES 15 BALLISTIC MISSILES INTO IRAQ TARGETING US, COALITION FORCES, OFFICIALS SAY

Iran called on the U.S. not to retaliate after the Islamic Republic launched as many as 15 ballistic missiles at the bases where U.S. troops were stationed – a clear indication that Iran wants to avoid further military conflict with the far more powerful American forces.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif tweeted after the attacks: “Iran took & concluded proportionate measures in self-defense under Article 51 of UN Charter targeting base from which cowardly armed attack against our citizens & senior officials were launched. We do not seek escalation or war, but will defend ourselves against any aggression.”

More from Opinion

The lesson here is that despite Iran’s tough talk and threats, it fears the power of the U.S. and doesn’t want a military confrontation with America that could lead to a U.S. invasion – the fate that befell its neighbors Iraq and Afghanistan.

In fact, the U.S. killing of Soleimani was such a severe blow to the Iranian regime that it may be the de-escalation event we were looking for to ratchet down tensions with Iran.

As a result, Trump’s decision to kill Soleimani – a terrorist responsible for the death of more than 600 Americans and thousands of others – was a double victory for the U.S.

First, eliminating Soleimani ensures he will never lead another deadly attack. And second, the killing is a stern warning to Iran that the Trump administration is not afraid to attack when warranted.

The killing of Soleimani and other terrorists followed an attack by a militia backed by Iran that killed a U.S. contractor and wounded four other Americans in December. The U.S. conducted airstrikes on five bases belonging to the terrorist militia Kataib Hezbollah in retaliation.

That American action prompted Abu Mahdi al-Mohandes – the commander of Kataib Hezbollah – to join with other militia leaders to attack the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad.

A day later President Trump decided to target Soleimani – the man responsible for the escalation in Iraq and across the region and the one man whose death would send a clear warning to Iran to back off. Or else.

Trump appears to have asked himself the right question: Who do we take out to stop these Iranian attacks? The answer was Soleimani.

Trump should be commended for ordering the drone strike that killed both Soleimani and Abu Mahdi al-Mohandes –the two most powerful men undermining the U.S. presence in Iraq and the region.

Mohandes’ death could be a de-escalation event for Iraq.

It’s time now for the Iraqi government to tell Iran to stop killing Iraqis, and time for Iraq to target and arrest members of the Iranian-backed militias.

If Iraq refuses, the U.S. must come to the realization that the Iraqi government is more interested in being allied with Iran. That will lead to a U.S. troop withdrawal and loss of support for the Iraqi government. The big loser, if that happens, will be Iraq and its people.

2020 Democrats risk backlash in trashing Trump’s Iran strike

Westlake Legal Group 694940094001_6120447965001_6120451572001-vs 2020 Democrats risk backlash in trashing Trump’s Iran strike Howard Kurtz fox-news/columns/media-buzz fox news fnc/media fnc ef26787b-0b0e-5662-9d80-570555302797 article

A week ago, the top challenge facing Democrats was how to run against Donald Trump in a strong economy.

Now they face a dual dilemma, namely how to run against a president who also, for all the criticism around the globe, took out Iran’s top terrorist.

The most liberal 2020 contenders are ratcheting up their rhetoric on the killing of Qassam Soleimani, which they obviously believe plays well with the party’s left wing. But when the general election rolls around, it could leave them looking like their sympathies are misplaced.

AS PRESS QUESTIONS INTEL, AN UNLIKELY VOICE BLAMES SOLEIMANI’S STUPIDITY

The situation is obviously complicated, and will be influenced by how the Iranians retaliate, the magnitude of the president’s counterattack, and whether Iraq destabilizes the region by expelling American troops. The Bush invasion of Iraq looked very different a year later.

Bernie Sanders cast Trump’s decision in the harshest possible light by telling CNN’s Anderson Cooper:

“This guy, you know, was, as bad as he was, an official of the Iranian government. And, you unleash — then, if China does that, you know, if Russia does that, you know, Russia has been implicated under Putin with assassinating dissidents.”

Now I understand the argument that Soleimani, in addition to being one of the region’s top terrorists and responsible for the deaths of hundreds of Americans, was also part of the Tehran regime and therefore should have been off-limits.

But comparing what the president of the United States did to Vladimir Putin having political dissidents murdered is rather offensive. And yet it will undoubtedly draw some cheers on the Trump-hating left.

Elizabeth Warren, while accusing the president of a “reckless move,” initially called Soleimani a “murderer” who was “responsible for the deaths of thousands.”

But by Sunday morning, Warren was describing Soleimani only as “a government official, a high-ranking military official.” In a CNN interview with Jake Tapper, she said that next week “the president of the United States could be facing an impeachment trial in the Senate. We know he’s deeply upset about that. And I think people are reasonably asking, why this moment? Why does he pick now to take this highly inflammatory, highly dangerous action that moves us closer to war?”

SUBSCRIBE TO HOWIE’S MEDIA BUZZMETER PODCAST, A RIFF OF THE DAY’S HOTTEST STORIES

As Chris Cillizza put it, “Wow. We went from ‘murderer’ to ‘wag the dog’ in the space of a few days.”

Again, I get the distract-from-impeachment argument. But why promote Soleimani as just “a high-ranking military official”?

On “The View” Tuesday, it took Meghan McCain three attempts before Warren tersely acknowledged that Soleimani was a terrorist.

Such rhetoric has opened the door to criticism from the likes of Nikki Haley. “The only ones mourning the loss of Soleimani are our Democrat leadership and Democrat presidential candidates,” she told Fox. That’s political spin—almost no one in America is “mourning” the general’s death—but the former U.N. ambassador knows her target.

The more moderate Democrats have been more restrained.

Joe Biden, looking at the long-term effects, said Iran would boost its nuclear program and that “this is totally a crisis of Donald Trump’s making.”

Iran, he said ungrammatically, “now is going to be the person occupying and influencing Iraq, which is clearly not very much in our interest.” Biden, of course, was vice president when the Iranians agreed to a nuclear deal.

The furor gives Pete Buttigieg, who served in Afghanistan, a chance to play up his military credentials. He dodged Tapper’s question on whether the Soleimani killing was an “assassination,” saying he’s interested in consequences: “Did the president have legal authority to do this? Why wasn’t Congress consulted? It seems like more people at Mar-a-Lago heard about this than people in the United States Congress who are a coequal branch of government with a responsibility to consult. Which of our allies were consulted?”

And the former mayor told reporters in New Hampshire: “You could also argue that we wouldn’t be there if it weren’t for the invasion of Iraq in the first place, which I still believe was a grave mistake.” (Sanders, meanwhile, is using the occasion to rip Biden for voting for Bush’s Iraq invasion, which is true but also happened 17 years ago.)

Biden, Bernie and Buttigieg are in a three-way tie in Iowa, at 23 percent, with Warren 7 points back, according to a new CBS poll. Warren doesn’t want to let Sanders get too far to her left. And all the candidates have convince voters that they beat Trump, and that means besting him on the foreign policy crisis that is suddenly dominating the headlines.

Saying anything that be construed or twisted into sympathy for Soleimani does not help their case.

Pennsylvania girl reunited with Minnie Mouse doll that helped through 39 brain surgeries

A Pennsylvania girl was reunited with her beloved Minnie Mouse doll that she said helped her overcome 39 brain surgeries, according to her mother.

Bryanna Ramirez, 13, lost the doll at a Chick-fil-A restaurant in Trevose, Pa., last week before she was set to undergo another operation this week. She’s had a brain and connective tissue disorder since birth, according to NBC 10.

The doll was a little stuffed companion that had been through her side for every surgery since she was 18 months old.

This poor thing hasn’t eaten in days. Thank you again so much to EVERYONE we can not thank you enough.”

After losing Minnie, Ramirez said her daughter was “beyond heartbroken” and added it was “the only thing that helps her get through all that she goes through.” She added that she thought Minnie had been left in the car at first.

“This Minnie has been through all 40 of her Brain Surgeries with her and this doll means the world to this child,” Ramirez said. “She is a MESS!! We NEED TO FIND MINNIE!!”

People throughout the community came to her aid after the post, including the Bensalem Police Department, the Chick-fil-A restaurant on Horizon Boulevard and its employees.

“It was very emotional, to know what the kid went through with all these operations. This thing went with her through every operation,” A Chick-fil-A employee told NBC 10.

The tweet was an obvious response to President Trump who posted an American flag last week after he ordered an airstrike that killed top Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani.

Kim Catrall is returning to the small screen in a big way.

The “Sex and the City” star will lead Fox’s “Filthy Rich,” a drama about the heirs of a businessman fighting for their piece of his pie. The role will also mark her first time on Network television.

“After “Sex and the City,” I waited a long time to go back to television,” Cattrall, 63, said in a press conference Tuesday. “It wasn’t until I saw “Sensitive Skin” that I really wanted to go back to television. Despite Wednesday morning’s missile firings by Iran against U.S. bases in Iraq, President Trump was still right to order the airstrike last week that killed Iran’s Gen. Qassem Soleimani, according to U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla.

Iran fired as many as 15 ballistic missiles into Iraq, targeting U.S. military and coalition forces, officials said. Ten missiles hit Al-Assad Air Base, one missile hit a military base in Erbil and four missiles failed to hit their targets.

MEGHAN MCCAIN CONFRONTS WARREN ON SOLEIMANI: WHY IS IT SO HARD TO CALL HIM A TERRORIST?

“I’m hopeful this was an intentional miss,” Gaetz , a member of the House Armed Services Committee, said on “The Ingraham Angle.”

He added he believes President Trump understands the American people hope to avoid a war with Iran — and said the president’s actions have reflected that.

“I think the president has been measured,” Gaetz said. “And let’s hope that restraint wins the day.”

Gaetz argued against those who claim Trump provoked Iran by reneging on the 2015 Iran nuclear deal that was negotiated by the Obama administration.

He said he hoped the Trump doctrine would get the U.S. out of the Middle East and argued that Iran seems to respond to U.S. demonstrations of strength.

It’s “ironic” that some Democrats in Congress claim President Trump is using recent hostilities between the U.S. and Iran as a “distraction” from his impeachment proceedings, according to Eric Trump.

The president’s 36-year-old son, who serves as an executive vice president of the Trump Organization, made the observation Tuesday night during an appearance on Fox News’ “The Ingraham Angle.”

Following last week’s airstrike in Baghdad that killed Iranian terrorist Gen. Qassem Soleimani — and the ensuing reaction from Tehran — several Democratic lawmakers, including some 2020 presidential candidates, criticized the White House.

Trump was “trying to distract from the news of the day,” U.S. Sen. Benjamin Cardin, D-Md., claimed, while presidential hopeful Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., regarded the idea as a “reasonable question.”

U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla., a former chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee, also claimed Trump was acting in his own “self-interest” rather than putting America first when he ordered the drone attack against Soleimani.

But Eric Trump dismissed those arguments Tuesday.

“Don’t you find the word ‘distraction’ so ironic?,” Trump asked host Laura Ingraham, in response to the Democrats’ assertions about his father.

Trump told Ingraham it was the Democrats who have tried to distract from every political and policy victory the president has notched since taking office.

“The only thing that the Democrats have been trying to do is distract,” he said, “whether it be [from] the Russia investigation, the impeachment hoax, everything else they do, when the fact is that this country has the greatest economy we’ve ever seen, we’ve the lowest unemployment we’ve ever seen, we’ve the best numbers, the best consumer confidence. We’re leading the world in just about every metric.

“It is so ironic that now they are the ones coming out and saying somebody is trying to distract.”

Trump said other countries have been “jealous” of the American economy and America’s standing in the world.

“[My father] is doing a great job for this nation,” he added.

Last month the U.S. House of Representatives, along party lines, approved two articles of impeachment against President Trump, on charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. But House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., has not yet passed the approved articles to the Senate for adjudication.

Eric Trump said he is enjoying watching Pelosi “squirm,” and predicted the self-described “master legislator” from San Francisco will lose her political and Constitutional battle with the president — whether she passes the impeachment articles to the Senate or not.

“If she sends them over, she loses. If she doesn’t send them over, she loses,” he said.

He suggested Pelosi had to follow through with holding an impeachment inquiry to avoid a mutiny by the more progressive members of the House Democratic caucus, who had demanded such a probe.
