CNN anchor suggests he wants Dems to ‘take action’: ‘When does the rubber meet the road?’

CNN anchor John Berman seemed to urge Democratic lawmakers to “take action” against the Trump administration Tuesday over the Department of Justice’s handling of the Mueller Report and other disputes between Congress and the White House.

The “New Day” co-host referenced the planned contempt vote against Attorney General William Barr by the House Judiciary Committee over the Justice Department’s failure to provide the full text of Mueller’s report by Monday’s deadline.

Berman also mentioned Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin’s refusal to provide Trump’s tax returns to the House Ways and Means Committee.

“At what point do the Democrats actually take action? They risk seeming like the boy who cried contempt, as it were here,” Berman said. “Because they’ve been talking about it for over a week now. So when does the rubber meet the road here? Steve Mnuchin saying no to the taxes. Will they take him to court this week, or start that process? The contempt stuff, will they vote on that now? Or will they succumb to the delay tactics that the White House seems to be instituting here, just inching it forward day by day?”

Last week, Berman’s co-host Alisyn Camerota said she was “disheartened” that President Trump won’t face consequences based on the findings from the Mueller Report.

“I’m sorry if I sound like they’ve broken my spirit,” Camerota said, “I think I am channeling many members of the American public who feel these past two years have been disheartening for people who believe in justice. The reason that I say that is because, you see in the Mueller report ample evidence laid out of obstruction, of what Robert Mueller considered obstruction, but nothing happens. You see violations of the emoluments clause but nothing happens. You see nepotism, but nothing happens.”

“At this point, I think there is a feeling of, I don’t know, exhaustion, I guess,” she continued. “We know this from polls, we know this from voters turning away after the Mueller report that they think that Congress is going to continue this and there’ll be more legalese and there’ll be more nuance. I’m just not sure to what end.”

President Trump claimed to have lost $1.17 billion from his real estate businesses on his federal income tax returns for the decade between 1985 and 1994, The New York Times reported Tuesday evening.

The newspaper said it had obtained printouts of Trump’s IRS tax transcripts from a person “who had legal access to it,” without elaborating. The transcripts included figures from the future president’s federal tax form.

The White House had no immediate comment on the report.

The Times added that it had compared Trump’s information with those of other high-income earners and found that Trump “appears to have lost more money than nearly any other individual American taxpayer.” Indeed, the newspaper reported that the losses were so substantial that in eight of the ten years in question, Trump was able to avoid paying income tax.

MULVANEY VOWS DEMS WILL ‘NEVER’ SEE TRUMP’S TAX RETURNS DESPITE RENEWED PUSH

Trump’s tax returns have been a subject of speculation since he declined to make them public during his successful 2016 presidential campaign, claiming he was under audit.

In October 2018, the Times reported that Trump received at least $413 million in today’s money from his father’s New York real estate business. That report claimed that Trump helped his father, Fred Trump, claim millions of dollars in improper tax deductions; undervalued his parents’ real estate holdings in order to reduce his tax bill when he inherited them; and set up a phony corporation with his siblings in an effort to disguise millions of dollars in gifts from his mother and father.

The House Ways and Means Committee has asked the IRS to provide Trump’s personal and business returns for 2013 through 2018. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin on Monday refused to do so, saying the panel’s request “lacks a legitimate legislative purpose.”

Mnuchin’s move, which had been expected, is likely to set a legal battle into motion. The chief options available to Democrats are to subpoena the IRS for the returns or to file a lawsuit.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo made a surprise visit to Baghdad Tuesday to show support for the Iraqi government as the Trump administration intensified its pressure campaign against Iran.

The lightning-quick trip began and ended after nightfall and under heavy security following the abrupt cancellation of a scheduled visit to Germany by Pompeo. Journalists accompanying Pompeo were not told of his new destination until his plane left for Baghdad and were not allowed to report on his whereabouts until after his plane had taken off for London.

During the flight to Baghdad, Pompeo told reporters he would meet with Iraqi President Barham Salih and Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi.

“You’ve all seen the reports that there have been escalating — information that indicates Iran is escalating their activity,” Pompeo said. “I wanted to go to Baghdad to speak with the leadership there, to assure them that we stood ready to continue to ensure that Iraq is a sovereign, independent nation.”

Pompeo also said he wanted to underscore Iraq’s need to protect Americans in their country.

“We wanted to let them know about the increased threat stream that we had seen and give them a little bit more background on that so they could ensure that they were doing all they could to provide protection for our team,” he said. “They understood, too, it’s important for their country.”

The secretary of state added that he would also discuss unfinished business deals that he said would allow Iraq to wean itself from dependence on Iranian energy.

“These aren’t even all American business deals. These are — this is about trying to assist Iraq in obtaining their energy independence. Some of these are potential power line opportunities out of Jordan and out of Egypt, so electricity then can be provided. So this isn’t about American commerce. This is about ensuring that there’s Iraqi energy independence,” he said.

Late Sunday, the U.S. announced that it is rushing an aircraft carrier group to the Middle East to deter or respond to any Iranian attack. U.S. officials have said there are indications Iran is planning to retaliate for the Trump administration’s stepped-up sanctions on the country, although the threat information remains vague.

As tensions rise between Washington and Tehran, Baghdad in some ways is caught in the middle. Iraq has a close relationship with the U.S., which is leading the international coalition in the war against ISIS group in Iraq and Syria. More than 5,000 U.S. troops are stationed on Iraqi soil.

But Iraq is also tightly enmeshed with Iran in trade, security and political matters, and it has been loath to antagonize its larger neighbor. Iran won the ear of many top Iraqi politicians after it stepped in to fill the political vacuum following the 2003 U.S. invasion. It also can count on the loyalty of several powerful Iraqi militias, which have fought previously against U.S. forces in the country and on the side of Iran’s allies in Syria in that country’s civil war.

The Trump administration has made several recent moves to squeeze Iran. Last month, President Donald Trump announced the U.S. would no longer exempt any countries from U.S. sanctions if they continue to buy Iranian oil. The U.S. also designated Iran’s Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist group, the first ever for an entire division of another government.

Trump withdrew from the Obama administration’s landmark nuclear deal with Iran in May 2018 and, in the months that followed, re-imposed punishing sanctions, including those targeting Iran’s oil, shipping and banking sectors.

Attempt to hack email server stunned Clinton aide, FBI files show

“omg.”

That was the three-letter response from top Hillary Clinton aide Huma Abedin — familiar Internet shorthand for “Oh my God!” — when Justin Cooper, the technology pro overseeing Clinton’s private home-based email servers, told her shortly after midnight on Jan. 9, 2011, that “someone was trying to hack us.”

The revelation was contained in a trove of newly released, partially redacted FBI documents from the agency’s investigation into whether Clinton mishandled classified information — a probe known as the “Midyear Exam.” The document release reveals numerous episodes in which the Clinton team either suspected it had been hacked or seemingly acknowledged that security measures had come up short.

In a tense email exchange, Cooper wrote to Abedin at 2:57 a.m. Sunday: “I had to shut down the server. Someone was trying to hack us and while they did not get in i didnt want to let them have the chance to. I will restart in the morning.”

At 6:30 the next morning, Abedin wrote to State Department officials — including Clinton’s chief of staff at the time, Cheryl Mills — “Don’t email hrc anything sensitive. I can explain more in person.”

“omg.”

Later that year, Cooper wrote to Clinton, “It is a constant fight to keep up with the security measures and unfortunately we keep seeing reminders of why we need to.”

And in August 2010, according to the documents, Clinton aide Monica Hanley wrote to Abedin after receiving a suspect spam email: “Yeah I wonder if someone hacked in. that stinks.”

DOJ REACHED AGREEMENT WITH CLINTON LAWYERS TO BLOCK FBI ACCESS TO CLINTON FOUNDATION EMAILS, STRZOK SAYS

The files also included the handwritten notes of agents’ March 2016 interview with Cooper, who described the presence of a “SCIF” — an acronym “sensitive compartmented information facility” — in Clinton’s Chappaqua, N.Y., and Washington, D.C., homes.

According to Cooper’s comments as described in the notes, the server rooms in both locations were often left exposed.

“Open door — not always secured, sometimes when HRC not @ residence was not closed. (both resid),” the notes said.

The interview document also said Cooper described “safes” in at least one of the SCIFs, followed by a note from the agent, “No understanding of when open/closed” — although it was unclear whether that comment referred to the safes or the doors leading to the server room.

There were “home computers” but “no secure computers” in the SCIFs, according to the notes. However, “phone/fax/video” were “secure” in the residences.

Cooper, a previous FBI report said, acknowledged at least “two instances where he destroyed Clinton’s old mobile phones by breaking them in half or hitting them with a hammer.”

In August, it was reported that a Chinese state-owned company hacked Clinton’s email server, then inserted code that forwarded a copy of virtually every email she sent or received after that — a revelation President Trump demanded be investigated.

The Daily Caller reported that the firm operating in the D.C. area wrote code that was then embedded in the server and generated a “courtesy copy” for almost all her emails — which were then forwarded to the Chinese company.

The code reportedly was discovered in 2015 by the Intelligence Community Inspector General (ICIG), which then warned FBI officials of the intrusion. A source briefed on the matter confirmed to Fox News the details of The Caller’s reporting, and said that the ICIG was so concerned by the revelation that officials drove over to the FBI to inform agents — including agent Peter Strzok, seen as a strong Trump critic — of the development after it was discovered via the emails’ metadata.

The source told Fox News the hack was from a Chinese company, describing it as a front for Chinese intelligence.

A second source briefed on the matter told Fox News that officials outside the FBI indicated code on the Clinton server suggested a foreign source was receiving copies of emails in real time.

The FBI disputed the claims: “The FBI has not found any evidence the servers were compromised,” an FBI official told Fox News at the time.

However, a May 2016 email from Strzok, obtained by Fox News last year, said “we know foreign actors obtained access” to some Clinton emails, including at least one “secret” message “via compromises of the private email accounts” of Clinton staffers.

Conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh on Tuesday mocked House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s suggestion that President Trump is “goading” Democrats to impeach him as a means of solidifying his base.

“Folks, we thought it was crazy when they fell for Trump asking the Russians to help find Hillary’s emails. These people are so off the rails, they are so devoid of any common sense, and it’s rooted in a lack of a sense of humor, but they have been so discombobulated by Trump that they simply have lost their moorings,” Limbaugh said on his radio show.

LIMBAUGH: BIDEN BEST CHANCE TO BEAT TRUMP BUT HAS NO CHANCE IN THE PRIMARY

Pelosi, D-Calif., said Tuesday during a New York appearance that “Trump is goading us to impeach him.”

She added: “He’s just like taunting, taunting, taunting because he knows that it would be very divisive in the country, but he doesn’t really care. He just wants to solidify his base.”

Limbaugh insisted that “Trump is goading them, Trump is trolling them, Trump is teasing them, and they’re falling for it, and so Pelosi says that her Democrats are helpless, her Democrats cannot resist the trolling of Donald Trump. Donald Trump goads and the Democrats respond. And she’s trying to get her Democrats to react to this by saying: ‘You gotta stop this. This is what Trump wants. He wants us to impeach him.'”

PELOSI FACES MOUNTING TRUMP IMPEACHMENT PRESSURE FROM DEM RANKS AFTER MUELLER REPORT

Limbaugh also dismissed Pelosi’s notion that Trump needs to firm up his base. “Trump’s base is solidified. He doesn’t need you to impeach him for his base to be solid. His base has been solidified since the campaign. And his base is more solid than ever, and it is growing, Madam Pelosi, whether you go through this impeachment rigamarole or not.”

Authorities in Pennsylvania are on the hunt for a shooting suspect caught on video over the weekend opening fire on a car that was waiting for AAA to arrive, police said Tuesday.

The violence unfolded around 11:30 p.m. Saturday night “when two unknown black males initially walked past” an occupied vehicle on North 16th Street, Philadelphia police said in a news release.

Surveillance video released by police showed two men walking along the sidewalk and around a corner near where a vehicle was seen with its hazard lights on.

“Suddenly one of the suspects produces a black handgun and fires into the back window of the vehicle then fled the area on foot and was last seen south on 16th Street from Butler Street,” police said.

The vehicle’s occupants suffered gunshot wounds and were brought to a local hospital, according to the news release.

The suspect was described as a 20-to-30-year-old black male with a light complexion and a beard, police said. He was wearing light-colored shorts, a light-colored T-shirt and sneakers. He also may have had two tattoos, police said.

Alabama Dem who said ‘unwanted children’ should be aborted announces primary challenge against Sen. Doug Jones

A Democratic state representative from Alabama who endorsed abortion for unwanted children last week said Tuesday that he’ll mount a primary challenge to incumbent Alabama Democrat Sen. Doug Jones.

State Rep. John Rogers made the stunning reveal during a speech to the state House floor. Rogers, who also called Donald Trump Jr., “retarded” and proof that abortion should remain legal, has claimed that Jones privately supported his remarks on abortion.

“I am now a candidate for United States Senate,” Rogers said. “I’ve already, I’ve got – I’m running for real. I’m not backing down. I’m a candidate. I’ve already – I asked them to give me $1 million, and already $500,000 have come in already. And so if I get $500,000 [in addition], I’ll be an official candidate. I’m telling you right now.”

Last week, Roger sparked outrage when expressing his opposition to a pro-life bill that overwhelmingly passed in the GOP-controlled House in Alabama. It would ban abortions throughout the entire pregnancy, with exemptions for women whose health is at risk.

“Some kids are unwanted, so you kill them now or you kill them later. You bring them in the world unwanted, unloved, you send them to the electric chair. So, you kill them now or you kill them later,” Rogers said.

He continued by saying some children who face abortion could be “retarded” and “half-deformed.”

Jones, a friend and former attorney for Rogers, condemned Rogers’ “outrageous” remarks.

“I thought it was outrageous. I was absolutely appalled,” Jones told the press. “I have known Representative Rogers for a long, long time. I think he owes an apology to the people of the state. I think he owes an apology to members of the legislature.

“That is one of the problems with discussing these types of issues, people get emotional and people tend not to respect each other’s opinions as much, and you end up with comments like this. It is very, very unfortunate and I condemn it in the strongest possible terms.”

Rogers claimed on Monday that Jones called him twice following his public condemnation and told him he was “right” about his abortion remarks.

“He called me twice. He told me, ‘Doug, John, I know you’re right but I got to come out against you.’ I said, ‘OK.’ I said, ‘Fine, if it’s going to help your campaign, do that,’” Rogers told Talk 99.5.

“A sitting United States senator called you and said that they agreed with you, but politically he had to step out publicly against you?” the radio host asked.

“Yeah. Right,” Rogers answered.

Rogers offered an apology for using the word “retarded,” saying he “shouldn’t have used that word.”

“I support special-needs children, and they love me unconditionally. I have relatives and friends with special-needs kids, so I was wrong. Charge it to my head, not my heart,” Rogers said.

Jones issued a statement to Fox News regarding his conversations with Rogers, saying he’d have to “agree to disagree” with him. “I made my position clear. I thought his remarks were appalling and I told him that I strongly disagreed with him. There is already too much division in our politics and I won’t add to it here.

“With that, that’s all I’m going to say on this matter.”

The North American country said they’d pay to return their trash, but “the Canadian government has slowed down the process,” the Philippine Department of Finance said in a news release on Sunday.

PHILIPPINES’ DUTERTE THREATENS TO DUMP TRASH ON CANADA’S BEACHES FOLLOWING PROMISES OF WAR DECLARATION

The Philippines set a deadline of May 15 and prepared the trash for shipment by that date. The Canadian government, however, “informed that it might take weeks for them to arrange the necessary documents from their end” that would hinder them from meeting the upcoming deadline, Customs Commissioner Rey Leonardo Guerrero said.

Between 2013 and 2014, Canada shipped more than 100 containers of household trash, including plastic bottles and bags, newspapers and used adult diapers to the Philippines.

State officials said that the Asian nation is “prepared to return 69 container vans” of the garbage that was discarded in the Philippines.

According to the Department of Finance, Canada’s Assistant Deputy Minister for Global Affairs Donald Bobiash sent a letter dated April 24 that confirmed the Great White North would pay for the costs “and make necessary arrangements to bring the waste materials” back to Canada.

A Global Affairs Canada spokesperson confirmed to CTV News that Canada agreed to cover the costs, but would not discuss other information.

Teddy Locsin Jr., the Filipino Secretary of Foreign Affairs, tweeted on Tuesday that Filipino President Rodrigo Duterte “expects the garbage to be seaborne by May 15. That expectation will be met or else…”

Duterte recently threatened to “declare war” against Canada if they failed to remove the garbage, and also threatened to throw it on Canada’s beaches. A spokesperson for the president said the comments from Duterte were “figures of speech” and an “expression of outrage.”

Former Vice President Joe Biden on Tuesday was seemingly embarrassed after a rallygoer joked about some of his most recent controversies.

Speaking at a campaign rally in Nevada, a supporter shouted at Biden: “You can hug and kiss me anytime, Joe!”

JILL BIDEN: JOE HAS CHANGED, KNOWS TO ‘BACK OFF AND GIVE PEOPLE SPACE’

The 2020 contender smiled and looked out into the crowd, before laughing. Biden then did the sign of the cross and said, “That’s very nice, thank you.”

The supporter’s remark came shortly after he took the stage to applause. Biden told the crowd they should expect him to work hard as he vies for the Democratic presidential nomination.

Multiple women in recent months have accused the former vice president of touching them inappropriately at events.

Writer D.J. Hill alleged that at a 2012 fundraising event in Minneapolis, Biden put his hand on her shoulder, then dropped it down her back in a way that made her “very uncomfortable” while Hill and her husband posed for pictures with him.

In another incident, former college student Caitlyn Caruso claimed Biden put his hand on her thigh and hugged her for “just a little bit too long” at an event on sexual assault at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas.

Biden responded to the allegations of misconduct in a video posted to social media. He said that “social norms are changing,” and he’s “heard what these women are saying.”

“Politics to me has always been about making connections, but I will be more mindful about respecting personal space in the future,” Biden said. “That’s my responsibility and I will meet it.”

Kate Middleton remembers exactly how it feels to be in Prince Harry and Meghan Markle‘s shoes as first-time parents.

On Tuesday, Middleton, 37, and Prince William stepped out to announce a new sailing race — King’s Cup Regatta — which will benefit eight of the royal couple’s patronages, according to People magazine.

The Cambridges’ appearance comes one day after Harry, 34, and Markle, 37, welcomed their baby boy, which Middleton — who is a mom of three herself — happily talked about at the event.

MEGHAN MARKLE, PRINCE HARRY WELCOME FIRST CHILD

“It’s really exciting for both of them,” she told reporters, before admitting that “these next few weeks, it’s always a bit daunting first time around, so wish them all the best.”

Middleton and William are parents to Prince George, 5, Princess Charlotte, 4, and Prince Louis, 1 — with the latter two children being born in spring like Baby Sussex.

“It’s such a special time — with Louis and Charlotte just having had their birthdays. It’s such a great time of the year to have a baby,” Middleton explained. “Spring’s in the air, so it’s really great. As William said, look forward to meeting him and finding out what his name’s going to be.”

THE WORLD REACTS TO ROYAL BABY’S BIRTH

For William’s part, he said he’s “absolutely thrilled” about Baby Sussex. “I’m looking forward to seeing them in the next few days when things have quieted down,” he added, before teasing: “I’m very pleased and glad to welcome my brother to the sleep deprivation society that is parenting!”

As for if he has any advice for Harry? “Plenty of advice,” William, 36, shared. “I wish him all the best, and I hope the next few days they can settle down and enjoy having a newborn in the family and all the joys that come with it that.”

The Sussexes announced the baby news via Instagram on Monday with a brief statement revealing that they gave birth to a boy.

“We are pleased to announce that Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Sussex welcomed their firstborn child in the early morning on May 6th, 2019. Their Royal Highnesses’ son weighs 7lbs. 3oz,” the statement read.
