Trump pardons ex-Army lieutenant convicted of killing suspected Al Qaeda terrorist in 2009

President Trump has pardoned a former Army lieutenant who was convicted in 2009 of killing an Iraqi prisoner suspected of being an Al Qaeda terrorist, the White House announced Monday evening.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders cited “broad support” for Michael Behenna, of Edmond, Okla., “from the military, Oklahoma elected officials, and the public” — including 37 generals and admirals, along with a former Pentagon inspector general — as the reason for Trump’s clemency grant. Sanders also said Behenna had been a “model prisoner” while serving his sentence.

“In light of these facts, Mr. Behenna is entirely deserving of this Grant of Executive Clemency,” Sanders concluded.

A military court originally sentenced Behenna to 25 years for unpremeditated murder in a combat zone. However, the Army’s highest appellate court noted concern about how the trial court had handled Behenna’s claim of self-defense, Sanders said. The Army Clemency and Parole Board reduced his sentence to 15 years and paroled him in 2014, as soon as he was eligible.

Behenna acknowledged during his 2008 trial that instead of taking prisoner Ali Mansur home as he was ordered, he took the man to a railroad culvert, stripped him, and then questioned him at gunpoint about a roadside bombing that had killed two members of Behenna’s platoon.

Behenna, who was 24 at the time, said he acted in self-defense when Mansur threw a chunk of concrete at him and reached for the lieutenant’s handgun. Army prosecutors said the argument didn’t stand up because Behenna was already pointing his weapon at the prisoner.

In 2018, Behenna’s parents told Fox News the prosecution failed to disclose that their own expert’s analysis supported their son’s version of events. The expert felt so strongly that he reached out to the Behennas about his findings.

Oklahoma Attorney General Mike Hunter initially requested a pardon for Behenna in February 2018 and renewed his request last month. Hunter said he believed Behenna’s conviction was unjustified because of erroneous jury instructions and the failure of prosecutors to turn over evidence supporting a self-defense claim. The White House statement said that former Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin and “numerous members” of Oklahoma’s congressional delegation had also expressed support for Behenna.

Talk about traveling far to become someone’s best friend/.

FOX 10 reported that Newton the dog will become a service dog in Arizona after traveling from Saudi Arabia, where he was almost euthanized.

“He was on the streets (in Saudi Arabia) and he was a homeless dog,” Adama Pfaff, director of Desert Trails Shelter, told the news outlet.

The dog was rescued from being euthanized. Pfaff said: “And that’s what they do with the animals there that aren’t found by somebody that’s willing to take that chance of them.”

Newton flew from Saudi Arabia to San Francisco before taking a road trip with volunteers to San Diego and then down to Scottsdale.

Atkinson has been charged with capital murder, and a warrant was issued for his arrest on Monday, Gulfport Police Chief Leonard Papania told reporters.

The suspect is considered “armed and dangerous,” and investigators said they “are actively pursuing him.”

“We hope he decides to surrender and let us bring him to justice,” Papania said. “He will not rest and we will not rest until he is taken to custody.”

McKeithen, whom Atkinson allegedly killed, served with the police department for 24 years and was set to retire at the end of 2019.

The 58-year-old was shot multiple times near his patrol car parking outside police headquarters and later died at a local hospital. The suspect ran off after firing several rounds, officials said.

Surveillance images released by investigators from that moment depict a man between 5-foot-7 and 5-foot-10, wearing a red beanie cap, black shirt, and navy blue shorts.

“Any time you have this kind of deliberate and violent attack on a police officer, especially right in front of a police station, it should cause everyone great concern,” Papania previously said.

The Federalist’s senior editor Mollie Hemingway said Monday that while Democrats are concerned that President Trump won’t accept defeat in the 2020 election, the people actually having trouble accepting election results seem to be Democrats.

Hemingway addressed Hillary Clinton’s comments that Trump and the Russians “stole” the 2016 presidential election from her on “Special Report with Bret Baier.”

“Really stunning to hear her say that she ran a good campaign and that the Russians stole it from her. I think somebody needs to sit down and have a frank conversation about the fact she did lose. She did not run a great campaign and that the Russians did not steal that election. To have so much commentary about how… people are worried Donald Trump won’t accept the results of the next rounds of elections, we really have had a problem with people not accepting results of the 2016 election, and that is on the Democratic side,” Hemingway said.

PELOSI: TRUMP MIGHT NOT ACCEPT DEFEAT IN 2020

Clinton made her comments over the weekend in Los Angeles.

“You can run the best campaign, you can even become the nominee, and you can have the election stolen from you,” Clinton said.

Hemingway added that other candidates have been following Clinton’s lead.

“It also is filtering down to other races. You saw, Stacey Abrams still says she’s not conceding defeat even though she lost by tens of thousands of votes and she said we no longer need to concede. I think it would be good to hold some people accountable. I haven’t even seen anybody fact-checking Stacey Abrams on this issue,” Hemingway said of the Georgia gubernatorial candidate.

Fox News digital politics editor Chris Stirewalt was more optimistic about the eventual 2020 presidential outcome.

“I have every expectation that if this is a close election, whether it’s Democrat or Republican, the lawyers will be involved and it will be acrimonious. We have been there before. The 2000 election was a thing,” Stirewalt said, referencing the drawn-out fight over Florida ballots in the Bush-Gore race.

“I think to Molly’s point, I think to the larger issue, we are having a hard time and it’s a little bit in both parties, we don’t trust the gatekeepers, we don’t trust the referees… We don’t have the confidence that people will accept outcomes. But, I have every confidence we will have a decisive election and that the loser will lose and the winner will win.”

Julian Castro renews call for president’s impeachment after ex-prosecutors claim Trump obstructed justice

2020 presidential candidate Julian Castro once again urged the House of Representatives on Monday to move forward with impeachment proceedings against President Trump.

Castro, a Democrat who served as mayor of San Antonio, Texas, before joining then-President Obama’s administration as Housing and Urban Development secretary, made his case hours after the release of a statement by hundreds of former federal prosecutors claiming Special Counsel Robert Mueller would have recommended indicting Trump for obstruction of justice if Trump weren’t president.

“The fact that you’d have almost 400 former federal prosecutors say that anybody else would have been charged with several felony counts for obstruction of justice, that says something,” Castro told Fox News on Monday.

HUNDREDS OF EX-FEDERAL PROSECUTORS CLAIM TRUMP WOULD HAVE BEEN INDICTED IN HE WASN’T PRESIDENT

“I called several weeks ago now for impeachment proceedings to begin because it’s clear that this president obstructed justice,” he emphasized. “Congress needs to act. They should act.”

Attorney General William Barr didn’t push for obstruction charges against the president after Mueller submitted his report on his investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. Mueller didn’t recommend obstruction charges against Trump, but also didn’t exonerate him.

Barr stood by his decision not to pursue obstruction charges during a contentious Senate Judiciary Committee hearing last week. Barr cancelled an apperance to testify in front of a House Judiciary hearing.

Castro spotlighted that “the question is – is this president above the law? I believe the answer to that is no, and that’s why impeachment is warranted.”

Castro was interviewed by Fox News during a campaign stop in Newmarket, New Hampshire. It was the candidate’s fourth trip to the first-in-the-nation presidential primary state since he launched his White House bid this past January.

Last month, after the release of a redacted version of Mueller’s report, Castro became the first presidential hopeful to call for the Democrat-controlled House to launch impeachment proceedings against the president. He was followed soon after by Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts.

A recent Colorado College graduate traveling to northwest Russia to work as a fishing guide was one of 41 people killed Sunday when a Russian airliner made a hard emergency landing at a Moscow airport, igniting unburned fuel that consumed the aircraft.

Jeremy Brooks, 22, is believed to be the only American who died in the crash of the SSJ100 jet, which was bound for the northwestern city of Murmansk.

Brooks, of Santa Fe, N.M., graduated from the Colorado Springs school in 2018 with a degree in environmental science, Fox 31 reported. Ivan Valdez, the proprietor of the Reel Life fishing shop in Santa Fe, told reporters that Brooks had worked for him since he was 16.

“He just recently graduated … and was looking to expand his horizons a little bit,” Valdez told KOB.

In a post on The Reel Life’s Facebook page, Valdez paid tribute to Brooks as “mature beyond his years and the ultimate people person.”

“With a world filled with so much anger and hate, Jeremy would take you away from all of that,” Valdez wrote. “I can remember all of our trips we have fished and guided together! You were like my son to me Jeremy!”

The Aeroflot plane was airborne for just 28 minutes after takeoff from Sheremetyevo airport before returning to make a landing laden with unburned fuel, investigators said.

Pilot Denis Evdokimov told Russian media that he followed procedures for landing with excess weight. However, the crew reportedly did not dump any fuel, which is common for flights that have to land soon after takeoff to prevent being overly heavy.

Evdokimov said the plane had lost radio communications because of a lightning strike, but it was not clear if that precipitated the emergency landing.

He added that he was not certain why the plane landed hard. Svetlana Petrenko, a spokeswoman for Russia’s main investigative agency, told Russian news agencies that investigators were looking into three main possibilities behind the cause of the disaster: inexperienced pilots, equipment failure and bad weather.

Video showed flames bursting from the jet’s underside as it touched down, then raging across the rear of the Sukhoi SSJ100’s fuselage within seconds as the airliner bounced down the runway.

When the plane came to a halt, some of the people aboard plunged down inflatable slides deployed from the forward part of the plane.

Some of those who escaped were carrying luggage, raising concerns that grabbing their bags may have delayed an evacuation in which every second was critical.

This year’s gala theme, “Camp: Notes on Fashion,” was inspired by a seminal 1964 essay by Susan Sontag in which she describes the phenomenon as something that shan’t be talked about: “To talk about Camp is therefore to betray it.”

Katy Perry is lighting up the Met Gala red carpet.

The “American Idol” judge, 34, turned heads when she arrived as a candled chandelier — complete with lit bulbs — at the annual event in New York City. For the rest of her look, the superstar opted for a blonde wig and jewel-encrusted shoes

“Who has ever been to a ball that did not have a chandelier?!,” Moschino designer Jeremy Scott, who created Perry’s over-the-top outfit, told Vogue.

Fox News correspondent Ellison Barber reported from the Venezuela-Colombia border Monday about the flight of migrants, what the United Nations has called the largest exodus of people in South America’s modern history.

“They do it despite the danger,” Barber said on “Shepard Smith Reporting.” “It’s worth the risk to get out of Venezuela.”

The country’s instability has been intensifying for years.

GUNFIRE HEARD NEAR VENEZUELA-COLOMBIA BORDER AS REFUGEES FLEE POLITICAL CRISIS

Last week, flanked by several heavily armed soldiers, the U.S.-recognized president of Venezuela, Juan Guaido, and his mentor, Leopoldo Lopez, attempted to spark a military rebellion and force disputed leader Nicolas Maduro out of office.

After a full-day of in-fighting in the streets of Caracas – which at one point saw an armored vehicle plow into a crowd in an incident broadcast on live TV throughout the world – the coup d’état attempt fell flat.

At least five people were killed in the street clashes.

Over two million Venezuelans have fled their nation’s hyperinflation, food and medical shortages over the last three years, according to the United Nations.

Many have landed in neighboring Colombia after making long treks by foot.

The migrants come on wheelchairs, for instance, Barber reported, and many runaways carry all of their belongings.

The illegal treks to Colombia are up hills and through rocky roads.
