Tucker Carlson: Press suck up to power instead of defending the First Amendment at WH Correspondents’ Dinner

In case you weren’t invited, the White House Correspondents’ Dinner took place over the weekend. For the third year in a row, Donald Trump was invited but took a pass and didn’t show up.

That has never happened in the long history of the dinner. Presidents always show up. They always show up in a tuxedo and head downtown to suck up to the White House Correspondents’ Association. They don’t want to do that. They hate going — every one of them. All presidents deeply despise the news media, but they make themselves go. They have no choice. It is a hostage situation.

If you blow off the dinner, the press will punish you, guaranteed. They won’t admit it, of course. They won’t say it’s personal; they will make up some story. Here, for example is Jeff Zucker’s spokesman, CNN chief media correspondent Brian Stelter, claiming that not going to media dinner is the same as attacking the media.

CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM TUCKER CARLSON.

“Say what you will about the press, this is an event honors the First Amendment,” he said on the air. “Yes, that’s what it’s about. It’s an awards dinner and a fundraiser. In the past, presidents have always shown up. Even if they were angry, the president would go and have a good time. This is yet another example of what we are seeing. The administration’s attack against the media takes many forms. One form is the president having a rally this Saturday instead of attending the dinner.”

Dumb people are so self-confident. Have you noticed that? It’s almost like there is a self-esteem confidence reverse access.

Anyway, they are telling us that going to your own events instead of our event is a form of harassment. Do you know what’s not harassment, according to CNN? Spying on former Fox News reporter, James Rosen, and his parents because you don’t like what he is covering. The Obama administration actually did that, and then Obama went to eight separate White House Correspondents’ Association dinners. Nobody ever denounced him as immoral.

CLICK HERE TO VIEW THE ENTIRE EPISODE.

Obama hated reporters, by the way. Most people do hate reporters, for good reason. But reporters loved him back anyway. They agreed with his politics. That’s what happens.

When they don’t agree with your politics, people like Olivier Knox, president of the White House Correspondents’ Association, saying things like the following at the dinner: “I still separate my career into the period before 2017 and what came afterward, and that’s because February 2017 is when the President of the United States called us the enemies of the people. I thought it was time that we reset this dinner and put the focus a little more squarely on journalism and a little more squarely on the First Amendment, and a little more on the people, the men and women who help to hold the most powerful political institution in American life to account. Ladies and gentlemen, to the First Amendment.”

People are doubting the news media. That’s wrong. We are seeing misinformation masquerading as news, they are telling us — and actually, they are right. We have seen a lot of that recently. How about the last two years of Russia coverage on CNN, for example? Michael Cohen met secretly with Russian spies in Prague. Don, Jr. is about to be indicted. The Steele dossier is entirely real. They told us all of that, and much more. All of it was wrong and stupid and totally dishonest.

The New York Times, the Washington Post both won Pulitzers for what turned out to be misinformation masquerading as news. Last Saturday night would have been a perfect moment, actually, to apologize for that debacle and return the prizes they won.

But no. Nobody apologized. Nobody returned a Pulitzer. Instead, they celebrated themselves. No surprise there. That’s what they do. What was odd, though, was hearing them talk about free speech.

CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP.

The First Amendment is, in fact, under ferocious attack, really more than any time in the last 50 years, at least, and yet the people in that room at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner seemed to notice. Where were these same people last summer when the Big Tech companies colluded to silence broadcaster Alex Jones? “Alex Jones, he is bad.” CNN literally led the effort to make him be quiet. Jeff Zucker doesn’t agree with Alex Jones’ political views, therefore he thinks Alex Jones shouldn’t be allowed to talk. So Zucker shut him up by force.

Did anyone at Saturday’s dinner mention any of that? And where were they when Facebook and Twitter blocked ads supporting Congresswoman Marsha Blackburn because they criticized abortion? Where were they when Tommy Robinson went to prison in the U.K. for having unfashionable these about immigration? Where were they when James Damore got fired and was then slandered by Google for questioning the company’s diversity theology? Where were they when Peter Vlaming lost his job teaching in Virginia because he wouldn’t use male pronouns to describe a female student?

Did any of the First Amendment defenders — “Here is to the First Amendment,” they say — at the dinner on Saturday say a single word about any of this? Of course, they didn’t. Their job, they say, is to hold the powerful to account. But when given the chance to push back against the truly powerful — the actually powerful, the we-are-not-even- kidding-powerful — Google, Amazon, Facebook, PayPal — do they say anything? Ever?

No. Of course not. They suck up every single time. They suck up to power. Because that’s who they are –dutiful toadies to the powerful, defending class interests and pretending it is principle.

Fine. That’s who they are. Just don’t lecture us about free speech, please.

Meghan Markle will keep American traditions, ‘bring her own sense of parenting,’ royal expert says

Westlake Legal Group meghan-markle-will-keep-american-traditions-bring-her-own-sense-of-parenting-royal-expert-says Meghan Markle will keep American traditions, 'bring her own sense of parenting,' royal expert says Stephanie Nolasco fox-news/world/personalities/british-royals fox-news/entertainment/events/babies fox-news/entertainment/celebrity-news/meghan-markle fox-news/entertainment fox news fnc/entertainment fnc article a5c0aa27-fc1f-550d-8557-8e57fffb5038

Meghan Markle hasn’t been afraid to break tradition as a member of the British royal family and we can expect for her to do exactly the same with baby Sussex.

The former American actress, 37, officially became the Duchess of Sussex when she married Prince Harry, 34, in May 2018. The couple is expecting their firstborn any day now.

PRINCESS DIANA REJECTED ORIGINAL BABY NAMES FOR PRINCES WILLIAM AND HARRY

“I think what we’ve seen with Meghan that makes her so unique and I think has really endeared her to people is that while she has a great respect for the traditions of the monarchy, the cultural institution that she married into, she also showed this ability to bring her own sense of identity, her heritage, being an American into being a royal,” royal expert Katie Nicholl told Fox News.

Nicholl, a British best-selling author and royal correspondent for Vanity Fair, recently published “Harry and Meghan: Life, Loss, and Love,” which presents an in-depth look at Harry’s romance with Markle and how their high-profile union is reshaping the monarchy. It features interviews with friends close to the couple, those who have worked with Harry, as well as palace aides, among others.

“The transition to parenthood is a huge one for anybody, but it’s particularly huge when a royal baby is involved because there’s just so much attention and interest to anything,” explained Nicholl. “But… I think [Markle] will manage to bring her own sense of parenting and reflect on her own American traditions. And I think she will find a way to very nearly merge that with royal tradition, along with everything else that is expected of a royal baby.”

Nicholl pointed out that as a first-time mom, Markle will be able to instill some of her own American traditions because top members of the royal family, including Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Charles, Harry’s grandmother and father, have quickly embraced Markle.

“Charles thinks Meghan is the best thing that has ever happened to Harry,” said Nicholl.

Nicholl pointed out Markle was allowed to enjoy a lavish, star-studded baby shower in New York City thrown by her close friends. And the British monarchy had no trouble with Markle celebrating overseas.

“I think that the royal family understands that Meghan’s heritage and culture of being an American are very, very important to her,” Nicholl continued. “We saw that with the baby shower  — it’s not particularly an English thing to do, but it is an American thing to do. It was important to Meghan and she was very much allowed to go and enjoy that tradition. I think we will see her embrace parts of her cultural identity in the way that she and Harry raise the child. And I think it will be done with the full blessing of the queen.”

However, Nicholl warned Markle shouldn’t stay too far behind from royal tradition because she is still expected to keep up with the role of duchess gracefully.

“The couple must be careful not to stray too far,” said Nicholl.

Nicoll recently told Fox News that Elizabeth, Harry’s grandmother, gave the former “Suits” leading lady her official stamp of approval.

QUEEN ELIZABETH ‘RECOGNIZES HOW HAPPY’ MEGHAN MARKLE MAKES PRINCE HARRY, BOOK CLAIMS

“I’ve been quite impressed by how much responsibility the queen has given Meghan,” Nicholl explained. “The queen likes Meghan. She recognizes how happy Meghan makes Harry, but she also sees how capable Meghan is as a royal. She showed them how much she thought of Meghan in the early days before they were actually married when she invited Meghan to be a part of the Commonwealth Day service. Quite an important event in the royal calendar. And there was Meghan before she was actually married into the royal family.”

Nicholl claimed Elizabeth is so fond of Markle she did more than invite her to personal, intimate family gatherings leading up to the marriage — she put her to work as a future duchess.

“The queen put Meghan on that world stage before she was even a member of the royal family,” said Nicholl. “I remember being really struck by that, surprised and impressed. The way Meghan has been fast-tracked into the royal family has been quite unique.”

Before the baby’s arrival, Markle and Harry moved into their newly renovated Frogmore Cottage on Elizabeth’s Windsor Estate. Nicholl said it is the ideal setting for the family looking for privacy.

PRINCE HARRY WAS ‘WORRIED’ ABOUT NOT FINDING A LIFE PARTNER, BOOK CLAIMS

It’s also a place Harry and Markle will allegedly use to raise a large family.

“I think Harry and Meghan are united in wanting a big family,” said Nicholl. “I think that Frogmore [having] 10 bedrooms is probably an indication that they’re certainly hoping for more than one child. Certainly, from the sources that I spoke to, it’s on the agenda and they don’t want to waste any time about it.”

Florida woman accused of sending pics of male’s genitals over social media: report

A 24-year-old mother-of-two who allegedly “maliciously posted” photos of a man’s genitalia on his own social media accounts and demanded he pay her to stop was arrested in Florida Saturday on a federal extortion charge, a report said.

Breyanna Dean, of New Port Richey, Fla., “directly exposed the victim to disgrace” by using his old phone to access his social media accounts and then sending out images of his genitals “across multiple social media platforms in direct messages,” a criminal complaint obtained by The Smoking Gun said.

Good morning and welcome to Fox News First. Here’s what you need to know today …

An asylum overhaul to counter a border crisis
President Trump has called for a sweeping overhaul to an asylum system he has long said is rife with fraud — including a new fee to process asylum applicants, and the capacity to rapidly adjudicate applicants’ claims while also barring them from working in the U.S. in the meantime. In a presidential memorandum, Trump specifically told Attorney General Barr and acting Homeland Security Secretary Kevin McAleenan that the move was necessary to address a crisis at the border. Arrests along the southern border have skyrocketed in recent months, with border agents making more than 100,000 arrests or denials of entry in March, a 12-year high. Immigration courts that process asylum claims currently have a backlog of more than 800,000 cases.

‘Issued to harass’: Trump sues to block subpoenas of business records
President Donald Trump filed a lawsuit Monday against Deutsche Bank and Capital One in an attempt to block congressional subpoenas for his business records, claiming House Democrats are simply attempting to harass him. Two House committees subpoenaed Deutsche Bank and several other financial institutions earlier this month as part of investigations into Trump’s finances. The lawsuit by Trump, his sons Donald Jr. and Eric and his daughter Ivanka, was filed in Manhattan federal court. The Trump Organization and the Donald J. Trump Revocable Trust are among the other plaintiffs. Politico reported that in a joint statement, Democratic Reps. Maxine Waters, chairwoman of the Financial Services Committee and Adam Schiff, chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, called the Trump suit “meritless” and claimed it was a delay tactic.

Tension over Attorney General Barr’s testimony escalates
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told reporters Monday night that President Trump “has demonstrated on a daily basis his obstruction of justice” amid a conflict between the White House and Congress over the terms of scheduled testimony by Attorney General William Barr before the House Judiciary Committee. Barr is scheduled to testify before the Senate and House Judiciary panels this week on Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report. However, the Justice Department informed the House committee on Sunday that Barr would not attend the scheduled Thursday hearing if committee lawyers seek to question him.

When asked if she had a message for Barr Monday evening, Pelosi said: “Respect the constitution. Honor your oath of office. Honor the request of Congress. For the American people.” The skirmish over Barr’s testimony came as Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein submitted his long-anticipated resignation, effective May 11. The growing tension could add even more intrigue to Tuesday’s scheduled meeting between Trump, Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer on a national infrastructure package.

‘Medicare for All’ showdown
House Democrats will hold their first-ever hearing on Medicare for All legislation on Tuesday, advancing a sweeping proposal that several prominent 2020 Democratic presidential hopefuls have embraced — even as some progressives caution the hearing may amount to a “farce,” and President Trump and top Republicans call the idea a socialist prescription for disaster. The 10 a.m. ET Rules Committee hearing concerns the Medicare for All Act of 2019, which promises to rapidly provide coverage for “all people living in the U.S.” within two years, according to the current draft of the bill and a summary released by Washington Democrat Rep. Pramila Jayapal. (WATCH Sen. Bernie Sanders defend his “Medicare for All” plan in the video from his Fox News Town Hall above.)

‘Gone way too soon’: Remembering director John Singleton
Hollywood is mourning the loss of Oscar-nominated writer and director John Singleton. The 51-year-old “Boyz n the Hood” director died Monday after having been in a coma for 12 days, following a stroke. Singleton’s family made an agonizing decision to remove him from life support. Stars flooded social media to pay tribute to Singleton, remembering him as an iconic director and a trailblazer in his industry. “I was discovered by a master filmmaker by the name of John Singleton,” Ice Cube, who starred in “Boyz n the Hood,” wrote on Twitter alongside a photo of the two at the Cannes Film Festival in the ’90s. “He not only made me a movie star but made me a filmmaker. There are no words to express how sad I am to lose my brother, friend & mentor. He loved bring the black experience to the world.”

The economy is on fire right now, and that, more than anything, could be a major boost to President Trump’s reelection chances.

And the Democrats are having a hard time figuring out how to run against this steamroller at a time of 4 percent unemployment and soaring stocks.

Of course, things could cool off before the election, as many economists predict a sharp slowdown in growth over the next two years.

But for now, the S&P and the Nasdaq just hit all-time highs, and the newly announced rebound in first-quarter growth, to 3.2 percent, trounced the market’s all-important expectations.

I’ve always felt that a president presiding over strong growth is far more likely to win a second term, even if other hot-button issues are dominating the news. The flip side is that strong economic anxieties can derail a reelection campaign, even if the economy is recovering from a recession, as happened when George H.W. Bush lost to Bill Clinton in 1992. And the Wall Street meltdown in the fall of 2008 helped put Barack Obama in the White House.

The nettlesome challenge for the Democratic candidates is to avoid appearing that they’re talking down a good economy or getting traction when most people are satisfied with their personal situation. During the 1982 midterms, Democrats privately hoped the jobless rate under Ronald Reagan would top 10 percent, which it did, but couldn’t say so publicly on their way to picking up 27 House seats.

Joe Biden is touted for his ability to connect with white, working-class voters in such industrial states as Michigan and Pennsylvania. But if those workers, except in certain fields, are generally doing well, that clearly undercuts the pitch.

But don’t take my word for it — ask Celinda Lake.

She’s a veteran Democratic pollster who told Politico that “we really don’t have a robust national message right now” on the economy. “We will tend to talk about things like paid leave and equal pay,” which are popular but “don’t add up to an economic message that is robust enough to win the presidency.”

Lake also said that people may not agree with Trump, but they know what his message is. “And Democrats, you don’t know what it is. And that’s a recipe for disaster in 2020.”

Look, many things will be at play in this election: Immigration. Health care. The Mueller report. Terrorism. Race relations. And Trump is underwater with key groups and has a 54 percent disapproval rating in the latest ABC/Washington Post poll.

And even on the economic front, not everything is Rosy Scenario. By the administration’s own projections, we’re looking at federal deficits over $1 trillion for the next four years. That’s what you get when you combine only modest spending restraint with tax cuts, which many Americans feel didn’t help them.

As the Politico piece notes, some Democratic candidates are taking broad swipes at the Trump economy, particularly on the subject of inequality.

Kamala Harris: “We have an economy in this country that is not working for working people.”

Elizabeth Warren: “Let’s make the zillionaires pay a fair share.”

CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP

Beto O’Rourke would undo the “worst excesses” of the GOP tax cuts.

One of the reasons that no economic message is breaking through is that there are 20 Democratic candidates, each vying for a share of the spotlight. That would matter less in hard times, but the Democrats don’t have that luxury.

If “it’s the economy, stupid” is as true today as when James Carville coined it a quarter-century ago, beating Trump will be harder than many Democrats think.

How long can Democrats continue to claim the roaring economy should be credited to the Obama administration? How many, except the self-deluded, actually believe this?

The latest bad news for the 2020 Democratic presidential candidates is the 3.2 percent GDP growth in the first quarter of this year, surpassing expectations, which is code for “we had predicted an economic disaster from the Trump tax cuts.” Additionally, a White House statement noted, “GDP also grew by 3.2 percent over the past four quarters…”

The statement also credits net exports and increased investment for helping to drive the economy in the first quarter.

WALL STREET CLOSES AT RECORD HIGHS AFTER A STRONG REPORT ON THE ECONOMIC GROWTH

Some of the presidential candidates, who have been claiming wage stagnation and promising increased salaries for workers, if they are elected, have not a dollar to stand on in light of these numbers.

Shall I go through them again? Lowest unemployment in 50 years, including among minorities and women; lowest number of people relying on food assistance since 2010. Will the major media ever acknowledge Trump’s achievements? Why should they start now, because doing so would require them to admit they were wrong, as with the Russian “collusion” narrative they pushed for more than two years?

The White House statement notes another reason for the economic gains: “A large pickup in net exports and increased investment in inventories helped drive this strong growth in the first quarter.” It gets better or, if you’re a Democrat running for president, worse.

According to Bloomberg.com, “A measure of sentiment among Americans climbed to a five-week high as views on the economy posted the largest gain since July.” And “The Bloomberg Consumer Comfort Index rose to 60.8 from 60.3 in the week ended April 20. A gauge of views on personal finances also increased to the best level in five weeks…”

Democrats should recall and keep repeating to themselves James Carville’s line, “It’s the economy, stupid.”

This derives, notes Bloomberg, from increased consumer confidence due to rising stock market indexes, sustained wage growth and a decision by the Federal Reserve to hold interest rates at present levels for now. Throw in job growth and the economic picture is about as rosy as one could hope, again unless one is a Democrat running for president.

What do these candidates have to run on? Joe Biden hoped to get forgiveness from Anita Hill for voting to confirm Clarence Thomas to the Supreme Court. She rejected his clearly political advances. That was a bad misstep and will not resonate well among his party’s increasingly dominant left wing.

Many Democrats and some Republicans are focusing on the president’s temperament and character. Will that matter to voters who have jobs they didn’t have during the Obama administration and to those whose paychecks have been fattened not only from tax cuts, but wage increases? It is unlikely a majority of retirees in the key swing state of Florida will reject Trump and vote for the Democratic nominee when they have seen such steady growth in their stock funds.

Much of Biden’s video announcement of his candidacy focused on the clash two years ago in Charlottesville, Virginia, between white supremacists and counterprotesters that left one dead and dozens wounded. Will this event, that the media exploited as representing all conservatives, matter in 2020? I doubt it.

Democrats should recall and keep repeating to themselves James Carville’s line, “It’s the economy, stupid.” People already have such a low view of politicians that they tend not to expect too much of them. They worry much more about their own pocketbooks. One might wish it were otherwise, but wishing won’t make it so.

This is why Democrats’ hopes for 2020 increasingly settle on impeachment. But as Marc A. Thiessen pointed out in a recent column for the anti-Trump Washington Post, “Impeachment over anything other than a conspiracy with Russia will backfire with the American people and help ensure Trump’s re-election.”

Talladega Superspeedway tweeted a thread of photos inviting followers to tour the “post-apocalyptic wasteland” of garbage, NASCAR memorabilia and other burnt debris left behind by fans after Sunday’s Geico 500 race in Alabama.

CHASE ELLIOTT LEADS CHEVROLET SWEEP AT TALLADEGA NASCAR RACE

Georgia native Chase Elliott zipped into the first place spot on the final lap in the GEICO 500 Sunday, achieving Chevrolet’s first victory of the season in the tenth race in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series.

But the race was far from over for the clean-up crew at the racetrack. Beer cans, bananas, a bicycle seat and what appeared to be a bikini top littered the lawn around the raceway. One photo of a “College starter pack” showed a crushed beer can, a box of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and a Pedialyte. Another post showed a picture of a sign rowdy fans turned upside-down.

Talladega Superspeedway posted photos showing burnt tents and skooters, an abandoned kiddy pool in a muddy puddle and even what appeared to be a “hot tub time machine.”

“Whoever brought this to North Park was feelin’ realllll optimistic,” the raceway wrote, poking fun at one image of a hairdryer that suggests a diehard fan wanted to style her –do race-side. Others came prepared to move in but conveniently left behind two televisions, a recliner chair, a pillow, some clothing and even a mayonnaise bottle.

Twiiter users replied to the raceway’s thread, saying the mess was “disgusting” and that those people “should be ashamed of themselves.” Meanwhile, the Talladega team remained a good sport about it, getting its frustration out online.

Dems expand housing assistance to middle-income earners to solve housing crisis

Across the U.S., Democratic officials are putting forth proposals to expanding subsidies to middle-class families – some with six-figure incomes – in a bid to make housing more affordable.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom has proposed funding housing for families whose income normally wouldn’t qualify them for assistance programs. Last month, his administration set aside $200 million for middle-class families in a $750 million package meant to combat the state’s housing crisis.

Meanwhile, District of Columbia Mayor Muriel E. Bowser has proposed a $20 million workforce fund to help families earning up to $141,000

Similar efforts are being proposed in other major cities like Boston and Philadelphia, where rising populations and real estate boobs have skyrocketed home prices, The Washington Post reported.

10 CITIES IN DANGER OF A HOUSING CRASH THIS YEAR

Critics of such efforts argue that housing assistance to middle-class families diverts resources for people with low, or even, no income. Others maintain such talk is merely political posturing.

“I think it would be a perilous mistake at this time in our history to have a focus shift upward on the income level when we still haven’t met the very clear and basic need of those at the very lowest,” Michael Anderson, director of the Housing Trust Fund Project, told The Washington Post.

Counselor to the president Kellyanne Conway appeared on “Hannity” Monday where she explained why she attacked Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., for not tweeting about the Sri Lanka Easter massacre and referred to media who haven’t pressed the freshman congresswoman as “fangirls.”

“I usually leave Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and some of these other freshmen like Ilhan Omar, [Rashida] Tlaib alone because basically when they speak, it’s a gift to conservatives and to the Republican Party,” Conway said. But she told Sean Hannity that while she is pressed consistently on everything President Trump says, Ocasio-Cortez is treated like a ‘hero’ and goes unchallenged in the media.

CONWAY: HOUSE DEMOCRATIC LEADERS FRUSTRATED BY AOC

“But I really had to call her out here because I am on television shows, and I’m asked constantly, ‘Why didn’t Donald Trump say this, why did he use that word? Where is the semi-colon in this tweet where I believe it should be.’  And I said hey, does anybody ask Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who you give a hero’s welcome to?  All you fangirls ever bother to ask her why she’s been completely silent on the massacre against Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday?” Conway said.

Conway on Sunday criticized the freshman congresswoman for not tweeting about the bombings targeting Christians in  Sri Lanka.

“I see officials who get a lot of airtime and ink like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, congresswoman, who tweets many times about the mosque and never once about the Christians being killed in Sri Lanka,” Conway said on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

Ocasio-Cortez responded on Twitter accusing Conway Sunday of attempting to “stoke suspicion” regarding the freshman lawmaker’s religion. The New York congresswoman also noted she was visiting her grandmother in Puerto Rico for Easter and “away from tech.”

Conway criticized Ocasio-Cortez Monday while on ‘Hannity” for not tweeting about Sri Lanka the next day, and instead promoted a documentary about herself.

“The very next day, still picking through the rubble in Sri Lanka, looking for survivors or of the deceased. She had time to tweet about a Netflix documentary about her,” Conway said. The Daily Caller pointed out that her tweets did end on April 18, and there were no tweets on Easter Sunday, but “her account did include both a tweet and a retweet about the upcoming movie “Knock Down The House.”

Conway reiterated the issue was not about her faith.

“It’s not about her faith, it’s about her selectivity,” Conway told Hannity.
