UK Brexit envoy in DC quits, slams government for ‘half truths’ days before election

The woman in charge of promoting the divorce between the United Kingdom and the European Union in Washington has quit from her post because she no longer wants to “peddle half-truths on behalf of a government I do not trust.”

Alexandra Hall Hall resigned as the embassy’s Brexit counselor with a letter slamming Britain’s Conservative government for using “misleading” arguments and its reluctance to “address honestly” the challenges and trade-offs involved in the U.K.’s departure from the European bloc.

Alexandra Hall Hall, the Brexit envoy for the United Kingdom in Washington, has resigned. (gov.uk)

“I have been increasingly dismayed by the way in which our political leaders have tried to deliver Brexit, with reluctance to address honestly, even with our own citizens, the challenges and trade-offs which Brexit involves; the use of misleading or disingenuous arguments about the implications of the various options before us; and some behavior towards our institutions, which, were it happening in another country, we would almost certainly as diplomats have received instructions to register our concern,” she wrote in the letter.

UK’S JOHNSON, CORBYN CLASH IN FINAL DEBATE BEFORE ELECTION

She added: “It makes our job to promote democracy and the rule of law that much harder, if we are not seen to be upholding these core values at home.”

The letter was first published by CNN, who said it was dated Dec. 3.

The 33-year veteran of the British foreign service said her position had become “unbearable, personally” and “untenable professionally” because of the actions of Boris Johnson’s government to not be “fully honest” about Brexit.

The government’s “behavior towards our institutions, which, were it happening in another country, we would almost certainly as diplomats have received instructions to register our concern,” she said.

The Foreign Office confirmed Hall Hall had resigned but said, “we won’t comment on the detail of an individual’s resignation.”

Her resignation comes just days before the U.K. votes in a general election that members of the public hope finally solves Brexit.

On Friday night, Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his main contender, Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn, traded barbs in the final head-to-head debate before Thursday’s election.

In well-worn phrases, Johnson tried to portray Corbyn as a waffler with no firm Brexit stance who would plunge the U.K. into more uncertainty.

“You cannot end the uncertainty on Brexit if you do not know what the deal is that you want to do,” Johnson said. “You cannot negotiate a deal if you are neutral on it.”

Meanwhile, Corbyn claimed that under a Johnson government, Britain would “walk out of the E.U. into a relationship with nobody” and spend years trying to strike a new trade deal with the United States. He said that would bring “seven years of complete uncertainty and continued job losses in manufacturing and industry.”

BREXIT MAY BRING ‘REAL END OF THE BRITISH EMPIRE,’ TOP EU OFFICIAL WARNS

Opinion polls put Johnson’s Conservatives ahead of the Labour opposition before the election next Thursday, in which all 650 House of Commons seats are up for grabs.

The Conservatives had a minority government before the election, and Johnson pushed for the Dec. 12 vote, which is taking place more than two years early, in hopes of winning a majority and breaking Britain’s political impasse over Brexit.

He says that if the Conservatives win a majority, he will get Parliament to ratify his Brexit divorce deal and take the U.K. out of the E.U. by the current Jan. 31 deadline.

During the heated debate, the two politicians tussled over security, goods moving between Northern Ireland and the rest of the U.K., and their domestic agendas.

Julia Stiles remembers working with Heath Ledger: ‘He was just phenomenal’

Julia Stiles worked with Heath Ledger 20 years ago but still remembers him fondly.

The “Hustlers” actress, who starred in the 1999 romantic comedy “10 Things I Hate About You” with the late Oscar winner, reflected on her favorite day of shooting the movie: when Ledger’s character serenaded a soccer-practicing Stiles in the school’s stadium.

“My favorite memory of that day — the whole day, he was just phenomenal,” she told host Andy Cohen on “Watch What Happens Live.”

“I mean, like, running up and down those stadium steps and nobody knew that he had this amazing voice. He just went full out and I got to watch it,” she added.

When asked if it was her idea to have Ledger really sang the Frankie Valli and the Four Season’s song “Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You” in that scene, Stiles said no.

US graduate student released from Iran highlights cases of Americans detained by Tehran

A Chinese-American graduate student is on his way back to the United States after he was released from an Iran prison in exchange for an Iranian scientist who was held by the U.S.

The release of Xiyue Wang, who was detained in 2016 and sentenced to 10 years in prison for allegedly “infiltrating” the country and sending confidential material abroad, on Saturday put a spotlight on the detention of at least four other Americans in Iran.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo acknowledged on Saturday that the Trump administration’s top priority is to return Americans held in Iran and around the world.

AMERICAN GRADUATE STUDENT HELD IN IRAN ON SPY CHARGES SINCE 2016 RELEASED

The most notable detention is that of former FBI Robert Levinson, who vanished from the Iranian island of Kish in 2007 while on an unauthorized CIA mission.

Last month Iran acknowledged for the first time that Levinson was the subject of an “on going case” in the Public Prosecution and Revolutionary Court of Tehran. However, Iranian officials did not say how long the case has been open or how it started.

Levinson is now the longest-held hostage in U.S. history.

His daughter, Sarah Moriarty, told Fox News’ “The Story” last month the Trump administration has been “working very hard; very tirelessly to bring him home.”

The U.S. has offered a $25 million reward for information leading directly to Levinson’s safe location, recovery, and return. This is on top of a $5 million reward already posted.

“My message to my dad is that we are working tirelessly every day and we are working hard to bring him home,” Moriarty said.

Others detained in Iran include 81-year-old businessman Baquer Namazi, who has been held for over two years and has been diagnosed with epilepsy. He is a former representative for the U.N. children’s agency UNICEF who served as governor of Iran’s oil-rich Khuzestan province under the U.S.-baked shah.

He and his son Siamak Namazi, also a dual national who has been held for more than three years, are serving a 10-year sentence after they were convicted of collaborating with a hostile power.

Baquer Namazi’s other son told Fox News in a statement Saturday that while he is thrilled that Wang’s “horrific nightmare” has ended, he is “beyond devastated that a second President has left my ailing father Baquer Namazi and brother Siamak Zamasi behind as American hostages in Iran in a second swap deal.”

“I hope, pray and expect that this is not a one-time trade but the beginning of an expedited process that will bring my family home soon,” Babak Zamaki said.

Also detained is U.S. Navy veteran Michael White, who had been held in an Iranian prison on unspecified charges since late July 2018. The 46-year-old White was detained after visiting his Iranian girlfriend, his mother told the New York Times in January.

White was sentenced in March to 10 years in prison for allegedly insulting Iran’s supreme leader and posting private information only. Information surrounding the care remains vague.

At the time, Joanne White said that the U.S. had put in a request for a consular visit with the Swiss government.

IRAN, US IN WAR OF WORDS OVER PRISONERS

The Swiss Embassy in Tehran looks out for America’s interests in the country as the U.S. Embassy there has been closed since the 1979 student takeover and 444-day hostage crisis.

An Iranian-American art dealer Karan Vafadari and his Iranian wife, Afarin Nayssari, received 27-year and 16-year prison sentences, respectively.

Pompeo said Saturday that Wang – who was released as part of the exchange of scientist Massoud Soleimani – is on his way back to the U.S.

Tensions have been high between Iran and the U.S. since Trump unilaterally withdrew America from Tehran’s nuclear deal with world powers in May 2018. In the time since, the U.S. has imposed harsh sanctions on Iran’s economy. There also have been a series of attacks across the Mideast that the U.S. blames on Iran.

The Western detainees from the U.S. and elsewhere will likely be used as bargaining chips for future negotiations amid Iran’s unraveling nuclear deal with world powers.

In June, Iran released Nizar Zakka, a U.S. permanent resident from Lebanon who advocated for internet freedom and has done work for the U.S. government. The U.S. deported Iranian Negar Ghodskani in September, who had been brought from Australia and later sentenced to time served for conspiracy to illegally export restricted technology from the U.S. to Iran.

Haley suggests Canada made ‘deal with the devil’ by backing anti-Israel UN resolution

Former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley suggested this week that Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government had made a “deal with the devil” in a recent decision to back an anti-Israel resolution at the U.N.

“I speak from experience when I say the United Nations presents many such opportunities to strike a deal with the devil,” she said at a U.N. Watch gala in New York on Thursday.

VENEZUELA WINS SEAT ON UN HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL; US BRANDS IT AN EMBARRASSMENT

She was telling the audience about how it is often “easier not to rock the boat” instead of standing up to “the mob” and cited the Canadian vote as an example of “this cultural corruption playing out in real time.”

“Canada has been, for a long time, balanced and fair-minded towards Israel at the United Nations. It has opposed the pull of the anti-Israel culture,” she said.

But that changed last month when the Trudeau government chose to vote for a resolution called “The right of the Palestinian people to self-determination” — sponsored by North Korea, Egypt, Nicaragua, Zimbabwe and the “State of Palestine.” That resolution calls for an end “to the Israeli occupation” and refers to the U.S. ally as “the occupying Power.”

Haley noted that Canada had voted against the resolution for years, and said the resolution “challenges the legitimacy of Israel.” She said the move had “surprised Israel’s friends.”

AMERICA ‘ISOLATED’ AT UN? GENERAL ASSEMBLY BREAKS WITH US ON MOST VOTES, REPORT FINDS

The former South Carolina governor suggested the Canadian stance had shifted now it was seeking one of the rotating two-year seats on the Security Council — a pick that requires a vote in the bloc’s notoriously anti-Israel General Assembly.

“One observer said Canada is making a ‘Faustian bargain,’ trading its integrity for a seat on the Security Council,” she said.

It’s the latest sign of tension between the Trump administration, from which Haley departed at the end of 2018, and the Trudeau government.

President Trump called Trudeau “two-faced” earlier this week after video surfaced of the Canadian premier appearing to laugh at Trump’s expense at a NATO summit in London.

That came a day after Trump had grilled Trudeau in person about whether his country was meeting its commitment to spend two percent of GDP on defense spending — something Trudeau admitted his country was still falling short on meeting.

Beer in orbit: Why space is the next frontier for alcohol

The idea of alcohol in space may seem outlandish, but a number of companies and organizations are ready to tap into some new opportunities.

On Dec. 5, SpaceX launched a 3-ton shipment to the International Space Station containing a miniature of a brewery’s malt house. The barley grains were sent into space for a beer-malting experiment by Anheuser-Busch. It’s the latest in a series of Budweiser experiments to explore how barley germination is affected by weightlessness.

In December 2018, for example, Budweiser sent an experiment to the orbiting space lab to analyze strains of barley seeds as they go through rapid hydration, germination and drying associated with malting barley. “Results from this research could help the company develop new malt barley varieties that are more tolerant to extreme stress environments and could also provide valuable insight for the general agricultural community,” explained the ISS U.S. National Laboratory, in a statement released at the time.

Other alcohol experiments also have been conducted in space. Last month, a dozen bottles of fine French wine arrived at the space station in the name of science. The red Bordeaux will age there for a year before returning to Earth. Researchers will study how weightlessness and space radiation affect the aging process. The goal is to develop new flavors and properties for the food industry.

In 2015, Japanese beverage giant Suntory announced plans to send six samples of whiskey and other alcoholic beverages to the ISS, but the company did not have an update on the experiment when asked by Fox News.

APOLLO 8 ASTRONAUTS RECOUNT NASA’S EPIC FIRST MISSION TO THE MOON

Chris Carberry, author of “Alcohol in Space: Past, Present and Future,” said that alcohol-related space research has broad implications. Anheuser-Busch’s experiments with barley, for example, could have a direct effect on agriculture in space, according to Carberry.

“You’re getting a completely different industry that is trying to solve problems that we have to solve before we have a sustainable presence on the Moon or Mars,” Carberry told Fox News. “[In space] we need to create our own food fast.”

But what about consuming alcohol in space? In his book, Carberry explains that, while astronauts and cosmonauts are prohibited from imbibing in orbit, there are stories of Russian cosmonauts bringing cognac to the former Mir space station and to the ISS. On occasion, this cognac is said to have been shared with astronauts. “It turned into this bonding in space – floating orbs of cognac, just a little shot,” he said. “I think it has played an interesting diplomatic role.”

APOLLO 11: HOW ‘DUMB LUCK’ SAVED ICONIC MOON PHOTOS FROM BEING DESTROYED

As for the U.S. space program, there have been famous instances of alcohol in orbit. Miniature bottles of brandy, for example, traveled to space on the Apollo 8 mission in December 1968 but remained unopened. The following year, Apollo 11 Lunar Module Pilot Buzz Aldrin took communion, including wine, on the lunar surface.

In his book, Carberry discusses the role of  alcohol, and looks to the future, with a possible return to the Moon and manned missions to Mars on the horizon. “Alcohol has played a pivotal role, good and bad, in society,” he said, noting its impact on agriculture, diplomacy and human relations.

APOLLO 11: WHAT NEIL ARMSTRONG AND BUZZ ALDRIN SAW DURING DRAMATIC MOON LANDING

So what would a hangover in space feel like? Carberry says that it is still unknown. “We do not know how [alcohol] would metabolize in space,” he said.

And, additionally, he points out that in orbit, “nobody has ever become inebriated.”

Ventriloquist Terry Fator reveals why he pulled Trump puppet from Vegas show, says the Left takes jokes too personally

Ventriloquist Terry Fator said Saturday that he was pulling the president’s puppet from his Las Vegas act because he wants everyone to enjoy his show.

Fator, who won America’s Got Talent in 2007 and thereafter had an 11-year residency at The Mirage Hotel, appeared on “Fox & Friends: Weekend” with host Pete Hegseth.

During the interview, he explained he created a puppet of Trump at the time he announced his candidacy at the beginning of the 2016 election.

TRUMP PUPPET CUT FROM VEGAS ACT OVER HOTEL’S CONCERN ABOUT ‘NASTIER’ POLITICAL CLIMATE: REPORT

“And I, like most of the people, didn’t think he was going to win. And, I was a supporter. I thought it would be great to get a businessman to be the president. It’d be wonderful,” he said.

“You didn’t create me. I created me,” the president’s puppet retorted.

“Okay, whatever,” Fator shot back.

“This was me making the decision because I had always said I don’t want to be political,” he told Hegseth.

“It got to a point where you’d just see people tense up when I would bring him out,” he continued. “It’s a joke!”

“As a conservative, I don’t get my feelings hurt when you make fun of…my side. I did an Obama joke that was completely and totally innocuous, it was not political, and I’m telling you the press in Vegas went crazy,” Fator continued.

EDDIE MURPHY, DAVE CHAPPELLE, AND MORE COMEDIANS WEIGH IN, BLUNTLY, ON ‘CANCEL CULTURE’

“It’s weird. When the Left hears a joke, they take it personally. When the Right hears a joke, we think it’s funny. We don’t take it personally,” he noted.

Earlier this week, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported that the Mirage asked him to make the change to avoid escalating the political divide.

“They said, ‘This political season is very, very, very rough and it’s going to get nastier. Would you mind?’ I said, ‘Fine, I’ll do it,’” Fator told the Review-Journal.

Fator said the hotel has never asked him to make a change in his show before.

“When they ask politely, I do it,” he said. “We have a good relationship. It’s a give and take. I’m not a diva. I’m not going to go off and say, ‘Screw you’ when they ask me to do something.”

He subsequently clarified, however, that the Mirage did not ask him to remove the puppet, but he did so a few months ago in his “ever-evolving changes to [his] show.”

“It was a miscommunication between my team and me, where someone from my team said they thought the Mirage would be happy if the show were less political,” Fator told the Review-Journal Monday. “The Mirage didn’t ask me to make any changes to my show.”

While Trump is gone from Fator’s upcoming Christmas show, “A Very Terry Christmas 2, The Sequel,” and the regular show for the foreseeable future, the performer plans to use the commander-in-chief in a series of Instagram and YouTube videos. Along with a puppet version of Bernie Sanders, puppet Trump will host a variety show à la Donny and Marie Osmond.

Other celebrity puppets in his Christmas show will include Frank Sinatra, Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder, Justin Bieber, David Bowie and Bing Crosby.

Hegseth asked the president’s puppet how he felt about no longer being a part of the show.

“I’ve been impeached!” the puppet exclaimed.

Naval Air Station shooter wrote manifesto condemning US as ‘nation of evil:’ report

The Saudi national who opened fire in a classroom at a naval air station in Florida Friday morning, killing three before being shot dead by officers, condemned the United States as a “nation of evil” in a post online, reports say.

Mohammed Saeed Alshamrani, who was said to be a second lieutenant in a flight training program for foreign military personnel at Naval Air Station Pensacola, posted a short manifesto to Twitter where he claimed to be “against evil,” AFP reported, citing the SITE Intelligence Group.

“America as a whole has turned into a nation of evil,” the post reportedly continued.

According to SITE, a group that monitors jihadist media, Alshamrani allegedly wrote in this manifesto that he “hates” Americans for their supposed crimes against Muslims and “humanity.”

“I’m not against you for just being American, I don’t hate you because your freedoms, I hate you because every day you supporting, funding and committing crimes not only against Muslims but also humanity,” he wrote, according to the report.

Alshamrani entered a classroom early Friday morning and opened fired, killing three people and injuring several others, including two Escambia County Sheriff’s deputies, who were the first to respond.

Sources told Fox News that the scene of the shooting — the classroom, where students usually spend three months at the beginning of the program — indicated that the shooter was a student who was “early” in his training.

The majority of the hundreds of foreign aviation students who have participated in the program are from Saudi Arabia, the Navy said. The Naval training program has about 1,500 pilots in total.

Six Saudi nationals were detained for questioning following Friday’s shooting, although their ties to the shooter were not immediately known.

The shooting is the second at a U.S. naval base this week. A sailor whose submarine was docked at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, opened fire on three civilian employees Wednesday, killing two before taking his own life.

Joey Jones: Majority of foreign Naval trainees are ‘amazing,’ Saudi Arabia doesn’t have ‘best reputation’

Retired USMC bomb technician Joey Jones said that the vast majority of foreign nationals trained at U.S. Naval bases are ‘amazing,’ but unfortunately the same can’t be said for everyone.

On Friday, an aviation student from Saudi Arabia, identified as Mohammed Saeed Alshamrani, opened fire near a Naval Air Station in Pensacola, Fla., killing three people and injuring at least seven others.

Six Saudi nationals have since been detained for questioning by the FBI as investigators look into whether or not this was an act of terror. Alshamrani was said to be a student in a U.S. Navy training program for foreign military personnel.

Appearing on “Fox & Friends: Weekend” with hosts Pete Hegseth, Ed Henry, and Lisa Boothe, Jones said that the air station in Pensacola is part of a tight-knit community and that he had visited administrative offices there before.

“This is a base that’s old and has a lot of retirees in the community,” he explained. “The merge of the Pensacola community and the naval station there…are kind of one community.”

Jones explained that people come back to the Pensacola base their career to do a “twilight tour” and retire.

Jones said it was below his pay grade to know what went wrong, but added, “What I can tell you is we train a lot of countries in a lot of ways.”

He told the “Friends: Weekend” hosts that “it’s not uncommon at all for foreign nationals to be on our bases training.”

He said that while the “vast majority” of the countries and people that they train are “amazing,” the Saudis “don’t necessarily have the best reputation of being there for the right reasons or putting in the hard work.”

“Sometimes it’s royal family and things like that,” he explained.

Friday’s events caused many officials and lawmakers to call for deeper scrutiny of the security measures and vetting that goes into selecting trainees. Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., wrote on Twitter that he is calling for a “full review” of the Navy training programs and Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., also tweeted that Friday’s events “exposed some serious flaw” in the vetting process that trainees undergo before entering the program.

The majority of the hundreds of foreign aviation students who have participated in the program are from Saudi Arabia, the Navy said. The Naval training program has about 1,500 pilots in total.

President Trump said he spoke to King Salman of Saudi Arabia after the shooting and that the foreign leader “called to express his sincere condolences and give his sympathies to the families and friends of the warriors who were killed and wounded in the attack that took place in Pensacola, Florida.”

“The King said that the Saudi people are greatly angered by the barbaric actions of the shooter and that this person in no way shape or form represents the feelings of the Saudi people who love the American people,” Trump added.

Squad members oppose Israeli-Palestinian ‘two-state solution’ resolution, aligning with GOP

The U.S. House approved a Democrat-backed resolution Friday calling for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict — but did so without support from the four far-left freshmen congresswomen known as “the Squad.”

U.S. Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., a Squad member and the first Palestinian-American elected to Congress, equated the Mideast plan to the racial segregation previously carried out in the U.S. under the “separate but equal” legal doctrine before the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s.

“This resolution not only endorses an unrealistic, unattainable solution, one that Israel has made impossible,” Tlaib said, “but also one that legitimatizes inequality, ethnic discrimination, and inhumane conditions. Israel’s nation-state law, which states that only Jews have the right to self-determination, has eliminated the political rights of the Palestinian people and effectively made them second-class citizens.”

Squad member Ilhan Omar, a Minnesota congresswoman, also opposed the plan in Twitter messages posted Friday.

“We are told to swallow these changes in the name of ‘pragmatism,'” Omar wrote in one message. “But there is nothing ‘pragmatic’ about a vote that makes peace unachievable.”

Democratic House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said U.S. House Resolution 326 was a “restatement of America’s policy.”

“There are few alliances as critical to America as the U.S.-Israel relationship,” Hoyer told the House floor. “The resolution on the Floor reaffirms Congress’s strong support for this relationship while contributing positively to helping Israel achieve the peace and security it seeks with Palestinians.

A Jewish member of Congress — Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md. — told the Jerusalem Post:

“For more than 20 years American presidents from both political parties and Israeli prime ministers have supported reaching a two-state solution that establishes a democratic Palestinian state to coexist peacefully and constructively side-by-side with a democratic Israel.”

The passage of the bill reflected growing opposition among mainsteam U.S. Democrats to the policies of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, whose plan to annex the West Bank prompted the passage of the U.S. resolution, which opposed the move.

Netanyahu had discussed his annexation plan with U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo earlier in the week in Portugal, Haaretz reported.

The resolution also opposed any Palestinian efforts to achieve statehood that don’t involve talks with Israel, and also reaffirmed that U.S. military aid to Israel would continue, the Haaretz report said.

U.S. House Resolution 326 passed on a 226-188 vote.
