Trump stirs pardon speculation with condemnation of DOJ’s Roger Stone treatment

President Trump‘s fiery reaction to the Justice Department’s sentencing recommendation for Roger Stone is stoking renewed speculation that he could end up pardoning his former associate.

Stone is awaiting sentencing for his conviction on seven counts of obstruction, witness tampering and making false statements to Congress on charges that stemmed from former Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation. Federal prosecutors recommended that Judge Amy Berman Jackson sentence Stone to between 87 and 108 months in prison.

PROSECUTORS WANT ROGER STONE TO SERVE MORE THAN 7 YEARS IN PRISON

“This is a horrible and very unfair situation,” Trump tweeted early Tuesday morning. “The real crimes were on the other side, as nothing happens to them. Cannot allow this miscarriage of justice!”

Stone was found guilty in November of providing false statements to the House Intelligence Committee about communications having to do with WikiLeaks, obstructing a congressional investigation of Russian interference during the 2016 presidential election, and witness tampering. Prosecutors claimed that Stone hid the truth to protect Trump’s campaign.

The president’s reaction to the DOJ’s recommendation for Stone — which followed a string of retweets related to the news — was soon met with discussions of a possible pardon. Several replies to Trump’s tweet called for a pardon, and various figures in the legal/political sphere speculated that a pardon — or at least a commuted sentence — is in Stone’s future.

Political scientist and Washington Post columnist Brian Klaas said Trump was “hinting at floating a pardon” for Stone.

“Can there be any doubt that a pardon is in the offing?” asked Politico’s Josh Gerstein after Trump’s tweet, referencing Trump’s past pardon of former Maricopa County, Ariz., Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

National security attorney Brad Moss was confident that not only will Stone become a beneficiary of Trump’s executive pen, but former national security adviser Michael Flynn could as well. Flynn awaits sentencing for providing false statements to investigators, though that sentencing has been postponed indefinitely as Flynn moves to withdraw his guilty plea.

“The paperwork to commute the sentence of Stone and any sentence for Flynn likely is already drafted,” he tweeted.

Stone’s sentencing is currently scheduled for Feb. 20.

Why nor’easters need to hit ‘the benchmark’ to bring big snow to Northeast cities

When it comes to figure out if the infamous winter storms known as nor’easters will bring heavy snow to major cities in the Northeast, it’s all about location.

A nor’easter is a strong low-pressure system that affects the Mid-Atlantic, the Northeast and New England. Well-developed nor’easters are notorious for producing heavy snow, rain, wind, coastal flooding and very rough surf.

The name comes from the continuously strong northeasterly winds that precede the nor’easter.

WHAT IS A NOR’EASTER? THE CLASSIC EAST COAST STORMS EXPLAINED

Assuming there is enough cold air in place across the Northeast, the exact track of a nor’easter becomes critical for precipitation type and snow totals.

What is known as “The Benchmark” that meteorologists refer to when trying to figure out what the storms may bring is actually specific latitude/longitude coordinates: 40 degrees North, 70 degrees West.

Major nor’easters that pass near or over “The Benchmark” can deliver the heaviest snow to the I-95 corridor.

WILL A NOR’EASTER BRING SNOW? HOW DIFFERENT STORM TRACKS IMPACT THE NORTHEAST

Storms that track significantly west of these coordinates usually bring mixed precipitation, with much warmer air/rain in at the coast, while tracks farther out to sea keep the heaviest precipitation offshore.

When nor’easters reach “The Benchmark,” the just-offshore track can bring monster, full-blown storms, especially when enough cold air is involved and deep strengthening occurs. Snow can be measured in feet, especially along the Interstate 95 corridor if the atmosphere is cold enough.

If temperatures are warmer, you’ll often hear about a rain-snow line, and snow changing to rain, then back to snow sometimes.

Just a few miles east or west can mean the difference between 2 feet of snow, or a few inches and mostly rain.

Prolonged northeasterly winds also bring a significant coastal flooding threat and beach erosion.

Rep. Jim Banks: Trump has given us a path to a balanced budget — it’s pro-worker, pro-family and pro-growth

In 2017, Speaker Pelosi famously cajoled House Republicans to produce a budget, warning “show me your budget, show me your values.” She was understood to mean that you can learn about someone’s deepest convictions judging the way in which they spend their money.

Ironically, she and her party never produced a budget when they regained control of the House in 2019. One could presume they failed to “show” their “values” because the values held by the radical leftwing of the Democrat Party today would terrify voters.

In contrast, President Trump is not afraid to put his cards on the table. Monday, he announced his 2021 presidential budget request (PBR), A Budget for America’s Future. After reading through it, I can endorse it as pro-worker, pro-family and pro-growth.

DAVID AVELLA: SANDERS VS. BLOOMBERG — DEMOCRATS’ CHOICE IS A SOCIALIST WIN OR A BILLIONAIRE COUP

Like the budget we produced at the Republican Study Committee, the president presents a path to balance the budget.

The president’s budget would put the federal ledger in the black in just 15 years. It includes $4.6 trillion in deficit savings over the next 10 years.

This is major progress from the “business as usual” Washington that has produced $23.2 trillion in national debt and faces annual $1 trillion deficits over the next decade. And it’s definitely not a surprise from an administration that has recommended more budget cuts than any other administration in modern history.

To achieve fiscal responsibility, President Trump is recommending deep cuts to bloated bureaucracies in D.C. and discontinuing programs that are no longer needed or should be handled by state governments.

Of those included cuts is a 26 percent cut to the Environmental Protection Agency, which is music to Hoosier farmers’ ears.

The budget also encourages reforms to eliminate the infamous year-end spending sprees. Federal agencies often empty their accounts at the end of the fiscal year to justify getting the same dollar amount in next year’s budget.

CLICK HERE TO GET THE OPINION NEWSLETTER

The PBR also addresses the money the federal government pays to dead people. Openthebooks.com found there are six million active Social Security numbers that belong to people aged 112 and older, which is 5,999,960 more than the 40 people who are actually aged 112 (and over) and alive today.

The president’s budget addresses this issue by introducing new strategies to reduce monetary loss, reasoning that “protecting taxpayer money and making sure it is serving its intended purpose is a fundamental responsibility.”

More from Opinion

Additionally, the president’s budget provides a blueprint for additional oversight to ensure the federal government learns the “Art of the Deal,” by negotiating better contracts with private contractors.

But it does not cut vital programs. For example, the president’s budget keeps much-needed defense spending, keeping his promise to continue rebuilding the military and it even proposes funding for 1,000 miles of the border wall.

It also proposes a big jump in funding for artificial intelligence and quantum information sciences — both vital to our global power competition with China.

Finally, it promotes a 13 percent funding boost for our veterans, ensuring our nation’s finest get the care they deserve.

On page 16 of the chapter on stopping wasteful and unnecessary spending, there is a section that summarizes the philosophy undergirding the president’s budget: “This agenda is focused on new strategies to reduce monetary loss because protecting taxpayer money and making sure it is serving its intended purpose is a fundamental responsibility.” I could not agree more.

The president has set down his marker for his stance on fiscal responsibility. This is a quantum leap in the right direction. And better yet—it’s a far cry from the radical proposals made by left-wing Democrats like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren.

Former South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg is a radical Democrat in a moderate Democrat’s clothing, radio talk show host Tony Katz said Tuesday.

Appearing on “Fox & Friends” live in New Hampshire with hosts Steve Doocy, Ainsley Earhardt and Brian Kilmeade, Katz said that Buttigieg is trying to appear as a moderate to voters.

“He does want Medicare-for-all; he wants Medicare-for-all who want it. He doesn’t want to take all your guns like Beto O’Rourke, but now is the perfect time to come and get all the guns,” Katz explained.

“He is on that radical tip,” he stated. “The difference between him and Bernie Sanders is a question of speed — how fast they want to go to get the thing.”

NEW HAMPSHIRE PRIMARY VOTING KICKS OFF, WITH SANDERS AND BUTTIGIEG LOCKED IN FIERCE BATTLE

New Hampshire’s presidential primary kicked off at midnight, as voters in three tiny townships in the state’s North Country and White Mountains cast the first ballots in the first primary in the White House race.

After getting out of Iowa’s Caucuses with essentially a tie with Buttigieg, expectations are high for the Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders in a state where he shares home-field advantage with fellow progressive standard-bearer Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts.

In the days after Iowa, Buttigieg closed in on Sanders in the polls, but one of the two tracking polls suggested that the candidate saw his numbers drop over the weekend. That wasn’t reflected on the campaign trail, as Buttigieg drew more than 5,000 people to his events on Sunday.

Buttigieg has struggled to resonate with African-American and Latino voters. And with the White House race moving next to Nevada and South Carolina – which have much more diverse electorates – a strong finish in New Hampshire is paramount for Buttigieg.

Katz told the “Friends” hosts that Sanders gives Buttigieg the “perfect foil” to separate his candidacy and positions from.

“This is what’s so frustrating to Amy Klobuchar,’ he added.

“Amy Klobuchar says, ‘Wait a second. I’m the more moderate one.’ Now, she believes in ObamaCare and ObamaCare used to be the most radical thing ever. That said, she doesn’t understand why she can’t get some of that moderate love and Buttigieg is getting all of it,” he concluded.

History of the New Hampshire primary: First in the nation for a century

MANCHESTER, N.H. – New Hampshire’s renowned for its mountains and lakes, its independent libertarian streak, and for its quadrennial tradition of being the state that holds the first primary in the race for the White House.

And this cycle, the state’s celebrating the 100th anniversary of its first-in-the-nation primary status.

NEW HAMPSHIRE’S TRACK RECORD IN PICKING PRESIDENTIAL NOMINEES

The Granite State held its first presidential primary in 1916. But four years later – after Indiana decided to move their primary to May – by chance New Hampshire voted first.

In those days there were no candidate names on the ballot. New Hampshire primary voters elected delegates to go to the Republic or the Democratic convention.

But that changed in 1949, when state legislative leaders pushed to place the names of the presidential candidates on the ballot. Three years later – in the 1952 primary – voters for the first time had a chance to cast a ballot directly for a candidate. While that ‘beauty contest’ didn’t have any direct impact on the nomination race, the results were reported nationwide, giving New Hampshire plenty of attention.

The 1952 primary put New Hampshire on the map for another reason – thanks to Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Estes Kefauver. The Tennessee senator was the first to make stops to meet and greet voters and court reporters. It was the start of New Hampshire’s famed retail-style politics.

And the primary grabbed even more attention that year – as Kefauver won the primary that year in a landslide, easily topping incumbent President Harry S. Truman, who later withdrew his bid for re-election.

For 100 years, New Hampshire has held the first primary in the race for the White House. A sign marking the primary’s history stands outside the Statehouse in Concord, N.H.

Fast forward to 1975 – and the state legislature passed a bill allowing the New Hampshire secretary of state to set the presidential primary date earlier than any other similar contest by seven days if necessary. The law, which was later updated, has allowed longtime Secretary of State Bill Gardner (who took office in 1976) to fight off challenges to New Hampshire’s first-in-the-nation status from other states.

New Hampshire and Iowa – which for half a century has held the first caucus in the presidential nominating calendar – have long fought to keep their positions as the kick-off contests. They’ve spotlighted their ability to level the playing for all candidates – regardless of their campaign war chests – thanks to their small size and populations and emphasis on retail-style candidate-to-voter contacts.

But with critics pointing to the lack of diversity in the two overwhelmingly white states – as well as the states’ lack of large urban areas – the fight to keep Iowa and New Hampshire first gets tougher each cycle.

Jon Peters claims he paid Pamela Anderson’s $200G debt during 12-day marriage

Pamela Anderson‘s former husband Jon Peters claims he paid off her debt during their 12-day marriage.

The “Baywatch” icon shocked fans last month when she revealed on Instagram she had tied the knot to Peters, her fifth husband, in a secret ceremony in Malibu, Calif. However, the duo split just 12 days later amid reports they never obtained a legal marriage license.

Now, Peters, 74, claimed in an email to Page Six that he “dropped everything” for Anderson, 52, including hundreds of thousands of dollars.

“She had almost $200,000 in bills and no way to pay it so I paid it and this is the thanks I get,” Peters said in the email.

After their split, a source told Page Six Anderson had made a “terrible mistake” and found Peters to be “too controlling” to stay with. In his email, Peters referred to the actress’ claims as “lies.”

“There’s no fool like an old fool,” he continued.

A rep for Anderson did not immediately respond to Fox News’ request for comment.

In a statement to Fox News last month, Anderson explained the two put a delay on their marriage license.

“I have been moved by the warm reception to Jon and my union. We would be very grateful for your support as we take some time apart to reevaluate what we want from life and from one another,” Anderson said via her rep.

“Life is a journey and love is a process,” she said. “With that universal truth in mind, we have mutually decided to put off the formalization of our marriage certificate and put our faith in the process.”

“Thank you for respecting our privacy,” she added.

At the time of their split, a source close to the couple told Fox News that their living situation is what caused a rift in their short-lived union.

“She’s known Jon forever, but she never lived with him, contrary to some reports. And until you live with someone… Well, let’s just say Pamela asked for a break. She is heading back to her compound in Ladysmith, Canada, to be with her family,” said the source.

Anderson and Peters were both married four times previously, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Anderson was formerly married to Tommy Lee, Kid Rock and twice to Rick Saloman.

Peters had a 12-year affair with Barbra Streisand. The film veteran produced the 1976 version of “A Star is Born” that starred Streisand; he also produced the 2018 remake that featured Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga.

Raphael Coleman, ‘Nanny McPhee’ child star and activist, dead at 25, family says

Raphael Coleman, an actor and activist, has died at the age of 25.

The “Nanny McPhee” star’s mother, Liz Jensen, took to social media last week to share the news of his recent passing.

“Rest in peace my beloved son Raphael Coleman, aka Iggy Fox,” she wrote on Twitter. “He died doing what he loved, working for the noblest cause of all. His family could not be prouder. Let’s celebrate all he achieved in his short life and cherish his legacy.”

In the tweet, Jensen also shared a link to an article he wrote about his work in environmental conservation.

The news was also confirmed in a lengthy Facebook post from Coleman’s stepfather, Carsten Jensen, who said that Coleman died unexpectedly during a jog (via Google Translate).

“I guess there’s nothing that makes you see death as unfair and meaningless as when a young person dies. It’s life itself that’s sabotaged. It just happened to my wife, Liz, whose youngest son, Raph of only 25, died last Friday,” he wrote. “He collapsed without prior health problems in the middle of a [jogging] trip and could not be restored. I got to know raph when he was six years old, and we were so close.”

The post explained that Coleman gave up a career as an actor to become a scientist “to save the planet.”

Coleman would eventually turn his attention to Extinction Rebellion, a climate change movement focused on fighting mass extinction.

“Under the name Iggy Fox, he controlled the group’s use of social media, spoke at demonstrations, and was arrested again and again. By April, he should have been in court accused of painting the Brazilian Embassy with red when the amazon jungle was standing in flames,” wrote Carsten. “He didn’t want a lawyer, but he wrote himself on his defense court when he died.”

Coleman’s mother has since shared another tweet, this one accompanied by a photo of herself and her late son.

“#ExtinctionRebellion’s October Uprising, Trafalgar Square. RIP Iggy Fox, aka Raphael Coleman,” she wrote. “He knew that we are all already in Heaven, right here on Earth.”

Liberty Vittert: How many times will you fall in love in your lifetime?

How many times will you fall in love in your lifetime?

Every one of us has thought about this question in one way or another at some point. Whether it is after a bad break-up, a divorce, a death, or even as a teenager dreaming of a first love, we’ve all wondered, is there such a thing as “the one.”

Or, for those of you that are like me and fall in love with every second person they have a crush on, many “the ones”? Given that in the United States half of first marriages, two-thirds of second marriages and three-quarters of third marriages fail, everyone better hope that there isn’t only one of “the one.”

JIM DALY: VALENTINE’S DAY — WHAT DADS WANT

Now, there are many psychologists and advice-givers that will talk about a first fairy tale love, a second hard love, and the final easy third love, but none of them show any real statistical evidence so let’s take a deeper dive and see if we can find any real statistics behind the answer to this question.

A mathematician, Dr. Hannah Fry, wrote a book on patterns in sex, love, and marriage, which showcased a fascinating theory. Fish tend to reject the first 37 percent of possible partners no matter what, and then the first possible partner that comes along, who is better than all those that the fish rejected, is the partner the fish chooses. Fry relates that to patterns we see in human nature, namely, we play the field into our late 20’s and then we choose a partner and settle down.

So, for example, if you believe you are most likely going to have 10 love partners in your future, you should reject the first 4, and marry the next love partner that comes along who is better than the first four. Or if you believe you are going to have 20 love partners, you should reject the first 8 and marry the ninth person.

More from Opinion

As Fry so aptly puts, it is a fine balance between having the patience to wait for the right person and the foresight to cash in before all the good ones are taken. — This means that at some point, we just make the choice to fall in love and settle down.

For example, I had a high school sweetheart, then fell in love with a nerdy math guy in college, had a long wonderful relationship with a kilt-wearing Scotsman in Glasgow and am now back in the US. This means the guy I’m dating should be super worried because statistically speaking I should choose to fall in love immediately and settle down (hope you aren’t reading this).

Interestingly, we all do this very naturally – human nature tends to follow patterns. So where does that leave us?

On average, in the US, people will have about 11 sexual partners. Now, one can imagine that if you are in love with someone, you most likely will sleep with that individual. This means that the absolute maximum amount of times you can fall in love in your lifetime is 11 i.e. a cap of 11. But we need to remove one-night stands, which Americans have, on average, twice in their lifetime, bringing the maximum amount of times you can fall in love down to 9.

But, if we reject the first 3 of our sexual/love partners and marry the 4th, that would leave us with 5 other future possible partners meaning that we have a maximum of 6 times that we will fall in love.

Now these are numbers are very subjective and pretty much a complete (albeit educated) guess. Human emotions are messy, complicated and usually completely irrational, which is the antithesis of statistics. But what these numbers do show us is that there are patterns, there are inferences we can make from the past about the future, and it can give you hope that there is no such thing as “the one and only.” Your next great love might just be around the corner.

Georgia Firefighter faces suspension for decision to save elderly woman from burning building

A Georgia firefighter faces a suspension this week for attempting to save an elderly woman from her burning Atlanta home last June.

Fire Captain Daniel Thomas Dwyer was assigned to the search team as other firefighters were attacking the blaze, but he decided to risk his life to rescue 95-year-old Sallie Skrine from the burning building, according to WXIA-TV.

He reportedly abandoned fire policy by entering the home. Inside he found Skrine unconscious on the dining room floor and got her out, but Dwyer and other fire personnel couldn’t revive her, the station said.

A “notice of final adverse action” complaint said the firefighter will be suspended four days because of the heroic decision that broke protocol. He is able to return on Feb. 19, according to WXIA-TV.

“You entered the structure without your crew members which is in immediate conflict with no freelancing, accountability, and maintaining crew integrity,” the complaint said.

Fire union head Paul Gerdis said Dwyer believed that every second counted, so he made the “split-second” decision to go in, the station reported.

“[The suspension] sends the wrong message,” he added.

Dwyer is reportedly appealing the suspension signed by Atlanta Fire Chief Randall B. Slaughter. In a statement, his commander said the suspension was “designed to encourage safety and order.”

“It also seeks to establish clear expectations in both emergency and non-emergency situations. At this time it would be inappropriate to publicly discuss individual disciplinary cases that have not been totally resolved. The City of Atlanta has a process in place where each employee is afforded the opportunity to appeal proposed adverse disciplinary actions with the Civil Service Review Board, he said, according to WXIA-TV.

The fire command also ordered his pay docked 48 hours, according to FOX 5 Atlanta.
