Rashida Tlaib on walking out of SOTU: ‘Even the mention of Brett Kavanaugh for me is a trigger’

Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., indicated on Tuesday that she couldn’t handle staying in the House chamber after President Trump started praising Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh during his State of the Union address.

“Even the mention of Brett Kavanaugh for me is a trigger,” Tlaib told MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow, who asked about her decision to leave.

“Just as a woman in America, the fact that he rightfully was accused and having an incredibly strong woman come for the public and the world and tell her story of sexual assault by this person who was appointed to the Supreme Court is just … I couldn’t stand still and not do anything about it and I needed to walk away from that,” she added.

In his speech, Trump touted a long list of accomplishments, including the confirmations of Supreme Court Justices Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch. Tlaib appeared to be referring to Dr. Christine Blasey Ford’s claim that Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her while the two were in high school.

Kavanaugh has denied any wrongdoing and was able to secure his confirmation after a long, protracted battle in the Senate.

SQUAD PRAISES PELOSI FOR TEARING UP TRUMP’S SOTU SPEECH

Tlaib was one of several congressional Democrats – including fellow “Squad” member Ilhan Omar, D-Minn. – to walk out of Trump’s speech on Tuesday. Some, like Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., and Ayanna Pressley, D-Mass., decided not to attend at all.

On Twitter, Tlaib said she walked out because Trump’s alleged lies were beneath the dignity of his office.

“I walked out of that speech. The lies, the bigotry, and the shameless bragging about taking away food stamps that people depend on to live—it was all beneath the dignity of the office he occupies. Shame on this forever impeached president,” she said.

Tlaib also defended House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., as she faced criticism for tearing up a copy of President Trump’s speech at its conclusion. “I would have shredded it. #justsaying,” she tweeted.

‘Friends’ stars Matt LeBlanc and Matthew Perry were rude, Ross Mathews says

RuPaul Drag Race” judge Ross Mathews revealed that two stars of the hit sitcom “Friends” were less-than-kind to him at a red carpet event years ago.

In his new book “Name Drop” the 40-year-old recalls a time early in his career when he was interviewing stars on the red carpet for NBC’s 75th Anniversary Party for “The Tonight Show” in 2002, back when he was known as “Ross the Intern.”

JENNIFER ANISTON REUNITES WITH ‘FRIENDS’ CAST FOR HER INSTAGRAM DEBUT

According to Page Six, Ross claims Matthew Perry and Matt LeBlanc approached him. Being a “Friends” fan, he introduced himself as Ross, prompting the two stars to joke that Ross was standing further down the carpet, pointing at David Schwimmer, whose character on the show was named Ross.

“‘Oh yeah, the other Ross,’ I replied, jokingly rolling my eyes,” he writes in the book. “That didn’t go over well. Immediately the mood changed. Matthew Perry began staring into the camera blankly as Matt LeBlanc asked, ‘How did you get this gig?’”

Trying to keep things light, Mathews joked back, “I slept my way to the top.”

“Matt LeBlanc pointed to me, then looked into the camera, and said, ‘Jay, are you kidding? Are you kidding, Jay?’” Mathews recalls. “Matthew Perry joined in, addressing the camera and asking, ‘What’s the call here, Jay?’”

Although Mathews didn’t appreciate the awkward red carpet encounter, he notes that LeBlanc redeemed himself 15 years later. He explains in his book that he was covering the SAG Awards for E! When LeBlanc approached him to apologize.

“I don’t know if you even remember this, but years ago you interviewed me on a red carpet and I was really rude to you.  It’s bugged me ever since and I’ve always wanted to apologize to you. It wasn’t cool of me to do that to you. I’m sorry.’”

Mathews said that he appreciated the apology, but noted that Perry has yet to address the red carpet incident.

Actor Alec Baldwin, guest-hosting on Wednesday’s edition of “The View,” said his “favorite” 2020 Democratic candidate at the moment was former Vice President Joe Biden, comparing him to former President Ronald Reagan.

During a discussion about the results of the Iowa caucuses, Baldwin pleaded to Democrats that “the only way we’re going to win” is if everyone rallies behind the eventual nominee.

“I have admiration for all of them in different areas,” Baldwin explained. “I have a favorite, but the other ones — I think of them [and] there’s another job that they should be doing.”

“Who’s your favorite?” Joy Behar asked.

“Well, the person who I think at this moment, and it’s an eternity between now and the convention is probably Biden only so far as how he polls across different groups of people,” Baldwin responded. “I think that Warren, Buttigieg, Yang all have their different strengths.”

Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, D-Ariz., earned praise from some right-leaning figures on Tuesday as she stood to applaud the opportunity zones President Trump created under his tax reform bill.

Sinema’s ovation stood in stark contrast to the rest of her party who remained seated for much of Trump’s State of the Union speech. The speech ended with Democrats’ leader – House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. – tearing up a copy of the speech in protest.

Next to her were two former 2020 presidential candidates — Sens. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., and Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y. — both of whom have vehemently condemned the president’s conduct and agenda.

Sinema has been perceived as a moderate Democrat and hails from a state that will likely be a key battleground for candidates in the 2020 presidential election.

After the president’s address, Sinema tweeted a statement urging unity between the two parties.

“There is much more that binds Americans, and Arizonans together, than what pulls us apart. Focusing on our common values instead of our differences is how Senator Cassidy and I introduced the first-of-its-kind bipartisan parental leave bill, and I welcome the president’s support for this critical legislaton.”

During his speech on Tuesday, Trump endorsed that parental leave legislation, which builds off his tax reform package.

Sinema added: “We must continue coming together and work to expand job opportunities, keep our communities safe, ensure veterans get the care they’ve earned, and make health care more affordable for everyone. As always I’ll work with anyone to get things done and deliver for everyday Arizona families.”

Sinema’s apparent break with her party came as Senate Democrats prepared to vote against acquitting President Trump in the chamber’s ongoing impeachment trial. She is one of just a handful of senators who are considered swing votes.

‘The View’ knocks Trump for giving Rush Limbaugh Presidential Medal of Freedom: Shouldn’t it go to people who ‘actually did stuff?’

The liberal co-hosts of “The View” piled on conservative talk radio host Rush Limbaugh after he was given the Presidential Medal of Freedom at Tuesday night’s State of the Union address.

Following Monday’s shocking announcement that he was diagnosed with “advanced lung cancer,” President Trump invited Limbaugh to his third address from Capitol Hill, where he surprised the radio legend with the highest civilian honor.

However, the ABC daytime hosts didn’t exactly think Limbaugh was deserving of such an award.

“You know, I’m very sorry that Rush Limbaugh is ill because you never want to wish bad stuff on people, stage four cancer,” Whoopi Goldberg began, “but I’m sorry, I thought the Medal of Honor, Freedom was supposed to go to people who actually did stuff.”

RUSH LIMBAUGH’S SHOCKING CANCER DIAGNOSIS SPURS SUPPORT, WELL WISHES

She continued, “I didn’t understand. You’ve got a Tuskegee Airman sitting there and if you’re going to give the Medal of Freedom to someone who actually made differences in the country and has done all kinds of stuff, how about giving it to Elijah Cummings’ wife as a thank you to all of his service?”

While she thought that Trump was “playing to his base” by giving the award to Limbaugh, Meghan McCain stressed the influence the conservative giant has in the country, pointing to the “30 million” listeners he has on his radio program and comparing it to the average 3 million who watch “The View.”

“Yes, but what has he done that merits the Medal of Freedom?” Goldberg asked.

“He completely changed the paradigm of radio,” McCain responded.

Joy Behar ripped into the “irony” that Limbaugh was being honored while Trump was offering outreach to the African-American community, invoking Limbaugh’s past attacks against President Obama as “Barack the Magic Negro.”

“He’s been so racist and so misogynistic over the years, to give him–who’s next, Roger Stone? How about giving it to him? Or Steve Bannon?” Behar exclaimed.

“And I don’t think it was lost on the black community that he gave that honor to Rush Limbaugh during Black History Month, sitting next to a Tuskegee Airman on Rosa Parks’ day while Rush Limbaugh was a longtime birther during the Obama administration,” Sunny Hostin said.

“And Melania, the other birther, put the thing on him. She’s a birther too,” Behar added.

US Embassy in Spain warns sexual assault cases against Americans are on the rise

The U.S. Embassy in Spain has issued a new security alert warning Americans about the “steady increase” in the number of sexual assaults in the country over the past five years.

The figures, based on information provided by the Spanish Ministry of Interior, “includes a rise in sexual assault against young U.S. citizen visitors and students throughout Spain,” the embassy says.

“U.S. citizen victims of sexual assault in Spain can find it very difficult to navigate the local criminal justice system, which differs significantly from the U.S. system,” the message states.

Last month, three U.S. women in the city of Murcia alleged that they were sexually assaulted at a New Year’s Eve party, the BBC reported, citing the El Pais newspaper.

In November, the streets of Spain were filled with protesters – mostly women of all ages – as they demanded the country’s laws be changed after five men were acquitted of raping an unconscious 14-year-old girl.

The court found that because the victim had drunk alcohol and smoked marijuana before the attack, she “could not accept or reject the sexual relations.” The men, it said, were therefore able to have sex with her without using violence or intimidation – an element required under Spanish law for a crime to be a sexual assault or rape.

The assault took place in 2016 in Manresa, a town in northeastern Spain, at an abandoned factory where a group of young people had been drinking and using drugs.

Two suspects were arrested in downtown Kansas City early Wednesday morning after police said they drove through the barricades of the Chiefs Kingdom Champions Parade and were “headed for the crowd.”

Kansas City Police received reports around 8:15 a.m. local time that a car broke through the barrier on the north side of the route somewhere near its start on Sixth Street and Grand Boulevard.

Officers from multiple agencies responded, engaging in a brief car chase.

Several videos posted on social media showed the car heading south on the route at a high rate of speed before it turned on Pershing Road, where police say it was “headed for the crowd.”

The car eventually was stopped by several police vehicles ramming it.

Two suspects were taken into custody, but police said there were no weapons or “indications of terrorist activity” in the car.

Tomi Lahren on ‘beautiful moment’ Rush Limbaugh received Medal of Freedom: ‘He charted a path’

In one of the most emotional moments of President Donald Trump’s third State of the Union Address on Tuesday night, the president made the surprise announcement that he was awarding special guest and conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh the Medal of Freedom.

On Fox Nation’s live coverage of President Trump’s 2020 State of the Union, host Tomi Lahren described the significance of that moment to her.

“For many of us growing up with Rush Limbaugh and counting Rush Limbaugh as one of the great conservative voices really of our time, having Rush there… it was such a special moment for him.. it was so beautiful,” she said.

“Here tonight is a special man, beloved by millions of Americans who just received a Stage 4 advanced cancer diagnosis,” said the president in his address. “This is not good news, but what is good news is that he is the greatest fighter and winner that you will ever meet. Rush Limbaugh, thank you for your decades of tireless devotion to our country.”

Limbaugh, who announced on Monday that he was diagnosed with advanced lung cancer, acknowledged the cheers of the audience, smiled and choked back tears, as first lady Melania Trump secured the medal around his neck.

“I had an opportunity to speak with Rush,” Lahren recalled. “And it was such an honor to me because I grew up listening to Rush, and of course my whole family, and he’s so genuine and so kind and to me such a mentor.”

Wall Street Journal Editorial Board member Bill McGurn echoed that sentiment, saying that Limbaugh was clearly deeply moved by the honor.

“The beauty of the moment is that when the medal is put on him you know that to him — he’s a famous man, he’s a wealthy man — but that means something to him,” said McGurn. “Probably more than everything else, people can see that.  This means something to him because he loves America with all his heart.

“There’s some similarities between the president and Rush Limbaugh, Rush has taken a lot of heat for his stand,” McGurn continued. “A lot of names, people writing books about him.”

However, despite all that, McGurn argued, Limbaugh has made a historic contribution to American society.

SHOCKED: PANEL REACTS LIVE TO PELOSI TEARING TRUMP’S STATE OF THE UNION SPEECH: ‘THAT WAS HER POWER MOVE?”

“No one has done more to teach the American people about free markets, freedom than Rush Limbaugh,” he said. “One of the things that makes his show work, I think, is he doesn’t look down on his people. He treats them with respect and he engages them. And that’s why people love him.”

Fox News contributor and the host of “Reality Check,” David Webb, suggested that Limbaugh has been a trailblazer for conservatives in the media.

“Rush went in there when nobody really did this and he opened those doors,” said Webb.

“He charted a path,” added Tomi.

McGurn agreed, saying “He was an entrepreneur, in addition to everything else.”

In fact, Lahren attributed her career to the effort of people like Limbaugh.

“A lot of people who are too afraid to talk about their own values and their own conservatism, or whatever beliefs they hold, listen to Rush and they live through him… and I think we’re all sitting here on Fox Nation because of people like Rush. For him to be recognized tonight was a beautiful moment.,” she concluded.

Trump’s Middle East peace plan ‘will die’ before president, Iran’s top leader says

Iran’s top leader is predicting that President Trump’s Middle East peace plan, meant to solve the decades-long Israel-Palestinian conflict, “will die” in Trump’s lifetime, state media reported Wednesday.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei made the bold calculation in his first remarks since the proposal, which has been opposed by the Palestinians, was unveiled last week.

WHAT’S IN TRUMP’S MIDDLE EAST PEACE PLAN?

“This plan will die before the death of Trump,” he said. “Hence, the coming and going and expenditures for it, and unveiling it, is a stupid move.”

He also said Iran will continue to support Palestinian armed groups as much as possible, believing those organizations “will resist” the plan.

Meanwhile, Trump has touted the deal as the “most detailed proposal ever put forward” toward a lasting peace in the region, calling it “a win-win opportunity for both sides.”

The plan envisions a disjointed Palestinian state, with a capital in East Jerusalem, and turns over key parts of the West Bank to Israel. It also calls for more than doubling the amount of territory the Palestinians control with a number of land swaps.

TRUMP UNVEILS MAP OF PROPOSED STATE OF PALESTINE

However, it appears to side with Israel on key contentious issues that have bedeviled past peace efforts, including borders and the status of Jerusalem and Jewish settlements.

The plan would require the Palestinians to meet certain benchmarks – rooting out terrorism, stopping “pay to slay,” implementing steps toward free speech and political reforms – to become a state.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas dismissed the plan as “nonsense” and vowed to resist it. Netanyahu called it a “historic breakthrough” equal in significance to the country’s declaration of independence in 1948.

WHAT SETS TRUMP’S MIDEAST PEACE PLAN APART FROM PREVIOUS PROPOSALS? EXPERTS WEIGH IN

Since 1979, when the Islamic Revolution brought hardline Islamists to power in Iran, Tehran does not recognize Israel and supports anti-Israel militant groups like Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon.

The Palestinians seek all of the West Bank and East Jerusalem — areas captured by Israel in the 1967 Mideast war — for an independent state and the removal of many of the more than 700,000 Israeli settlers from these areas.
