Rhys Darby is on a mission to make New Zealanders the “main funny guys on the planet.” Best known as ‘Murray’ from the HBO series Flight of the Conchords, Darby is bringing his unique stand-up comedy act to Arlington Cinema & Drafthouse this month—Kiwi accent, sound effects and energetic skits included. We caught up with Darby, who also stars in the Jumanji movie reboot, Netflix’s A Series of Unfortunate Events and TBS’ Wrecked.

This post originally appeared in our December 2019 issue. Want more fun things to do? Subscribe to our newsletters.

What makes your stand-up unique?
In a nutshell, I do stand-up with a physical nature. Basically, I tell stories and then I create and become the characters, and sometimes the objects, in those stories. It’s always a little difficult to explain, but I do sound effects and it’s quite a unique style of stand-up. My stand-up is about me being myself in awkward situations and my continuing quest to try and make it here in America.

How did you develop your comedic style?
It’s always from a simple act of play as a kid. I had friends, but there was certainly a lot of time on my own playing with toys, and I would always do the funny noises, do the funny character voices. I would bring my play to life a lot. I carried that on through into my adulthood. I’ve always been a bit of a big kid. I also spent time in the New Zealand army and there I learned physical skills and I bring those into my performance as well.

What’s your favorite thing about Arlington Cinema & Drafthouse?
I’ve done the venue before, and I really like it. I like that it’s a big room and a big stage because I like to do a lot of physical stuff. Smaller stages, for me, I find more restricting. I like to jump around a lot. My stand-up it quite theatrical. I give a lot. Shake ’em if you got ’em! // Dec. 5, 6 and 7; Arlington Cinema & Drafthouse: 2903 Columbia Pike, Arlington; $25

Bill Maher offers President Trump lots of money to resign

Westlake Legal Group BillMaher3 Bill Maher offers President Trump lots of money to resign The Blog resignation real time with bill maher President Trump HBO bribe Bill Maher

Bill Maher has a million dollars burning a hole in his pocket and he’d like to give it to President Trump. There’s a catch, though. Trump has to resign. Now.

During his Friday show on HBO, Maher tossed out an offer to present President Trump with a $1 million check in exchange for his resignation. Maher’s fear is that Trump will lose his bid for re-election and refuse to leave the office.

“I’ve been saying for a very long time now that I don’t think he’s leaving,” Maher said Friday night. “I mean, he’s wasn’t going to leave the first time, he said it’s all about ‘it’s rigged.’ He could lose by a landslide in 2020 and I still think he would say ‘it’s rigged, fake news, deep state.’ I just don’t think you’re going to get him out of there.”

Maher’s opinion is that Trump can be bought, even though he claims he can’t because he is already wealthy.

“The exact opposite is true. The man is constantly for sale,” Maher said. “He’s worried about Ukrainian corruption? The only time corruption bothered Donald Trump is when he’s not in on it.”

In order to appeal to Trump’s love of money, as Maher alludes, he is willing to hand over a personal check for $1 million and he’s willing to bet that lots of his swell rich friends in Hollywood will do the same.

“So, Mr. President, it is really very simple. You love money. We hate you. Take the money.”

The HBO show host spitballed some names of entertainment business elites with more money than sense who would pony up plenty of money to oust Trump before the 2020 election.

Maher has voiced his concern many times that if Trump loses re-election, he will refuse to leave office. “How about this: Just take my check for $1 million and I bet I could get another thousand people just from here to the beach including Malibu, of course, who would pay that much to see you resign,” Maher said into the camera, and, he hoped, to the occupant of the West Wing.

“So, Mr. President, it’s really very simple. You love money, we hate you. … You could finally be the billionaire you always pretended you were. Yes, I said billionaire because of the kind of money I could get from — just off the top of my head — Oprah, Cher, Madonna, Lady Gaga, Bono, Jay Z, Beyoncé, Pink, Rihanna, Usher, Pharrell, Eminem. And that’s just the ones with one name.”

The wealthy spend money on crazy things all the time, Maher contends, and this expenditure would allow them to do some good, you see. He really does live in quite a bubble, doesn’t he? With hopes of impeachment fleeting, Maher and his ilk are reaching a new level of desperation. With no other ideas popping into his head, Maher just wants to write a check and make his problem – President Trump – go away. The fact that he made such a lame-brained offer out loud and before millions of viewers as though it is a perfectly normal thing to do is the kind of action that makes me just shake my head. What are these people thinking?

Maher has nurtured his fantasy that Trump will try to stay in office forever since before the 2016 election. He told his audience at that time that voters shouldn’t vote for Trump. He said Trump would be president for life.

But I’ve been doing this for 23 years on TV, I’ve seen a lot, I know politics. This is different. I promise you, this will not make your life better. Once fascists get power, they don’t give it up. You’ve got President Trump for life.”

Surely with all that money, Maher could seek professional help for his terminal Trump Derangement Syndrome. Not only is bribing an elected official – much less the president – dumb, it is illegal. There is a little history between Maher and Trump, after all, where Trump held Maher legally accountable for his stunts on-air.

Funny stuff but of course any kind of compensation offered to a sitting president to secure his resignation would not just qualify as an illegal bribe under federal law it would in fact define the offense.

However, the quid pro quo as described by Maher was a bit foggy (at first the $1 million check was for a wager, then it was a payment for Trump if he quits his reelection bid, then maybe it was intended to secure a more timely resignation?) but perhaps that will work in Maher’s defense when the U.S. Attorney’s Office reaches out to discuss the attempted bribery of a federal official. Scoff if you will but there’s some case history to consider.

Back in 2013, Citizen Trump filed a $5 million lawsuit against Maher claiming the comedian was in breach of contract. The reason? During an appearance on The Tonight Show, Maher had offered $5 million for documented proof that Trump was not the offspring of an orangutan (a jab at candidate Trump’s earlier goading of President Obama to produce passport and college records for a similar payout). Trump eventually dropped the suit much to the amusement of Maher.

Celebrity astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson was one of Maher’s guests Friday night. He said something that was meant to be a joke, but it certainly rings true for at least half of the country. If Trump leaves office without incident, Maher would have nothing to make jokes about. He can use some new material, that’s for sure.

Tlaib calls for boycott of Maher’s show, he calls BDS “bulls**t” purity test

Westlake Legal Group BillMaher2 Tlaib calls for boycott of Maher’s show, he calls BDS “bulls**t” purity test The Blog real time with bill maher rashida tlaib HBO boycott Bill Maher bds

The fall-out continues from Bill Maher’s HBO show this weekend. Yesterday I wrote about an opinion he expressed during Friday’s Real Time with Bill Maher – a recession would be worth it to get rid of President Trump in 2020. That idea put into a discussion with his panel of guests was deeply disturbing as it showed Maher’s willingness to wish harm to Americans to satisfy his political hopes.

What I didn’t write about was Maher’s plea to Democrats to not use the BDS movement as a purity test for candidates. He called it a “bulls**t purity test”. Supporters of the BDS movement, like Reps. Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar were singled out by Maher as they are the most vocal lawmakers on the subject. Maher also criticized the media for the lack of historical reference in their reporting. He is absolutely correct when he says that supporters of Palestine act as though the Palestinean territory just woke up one day under what they call occupation for no reason at all. The history of Israel and Palestine is never explained. Nor is the fact that BDS supporters do not think that Israel has a right to exist. Maher said the left supports BDS to be woke but “actually slept through history class.”

“It’s predicated on this notion — it’s very shallow thinking — that the Jews are, in Israel, mostly white and the Palestinians are brown. So they must be innocent and correct, and the Jews must be wrong. As if the occupation came right out of the blue, that this completely peaceful people found themselves occupied,” he said.

Even the Never-Trumpers on Maher’s panel agreed with Maher. Most Democrats in the House agree with Maher, too. In July the House passed a resolution opposing the BDS movement. Sixteen Democrats voted against the resolution. Those sixteen are in the minority in their party on this issue. The vote was 398-17. Tlaib and Omar voted against it.

Tlaib, citing her family’s Palestinian roots, said in opposing the bill that she couldn’t “stand by and watch this attack on our freedom of speech and the right to boycott the racist policies of the government in the state of Israel.”

Perhaps neither Tlaib nor Omar knew that Israeli law prohibits those who support international calls to boycott Israel from entering the country, or maybe they did know. It really doesn’t matter. The fact is that both are provocateurs who had an agenda to push. They didn’t plan to go to learn or find common ground, they want to spread Palestinean propaganda, especially on Israeli soil. As Maher correctly asked, is it a surprise that a visit from them wasn’t welcomed once their intentions became known?

Tlaib now calls for a boycott of Maher’s show. She’s all about freedom and equality as long as it isn’t for Israel, you know. She is unable to demonstrate a desire for a sane conversation, however, and leaps to conflating Israel’s policies to that of South Africa’s. This is why she and her ilk must never be taken seriously on making policy in foreign affairs.

How’s Tlaib’s grandmother doing, you may ask? She seems to be fine but now she’s weighing in on wishing him retaliation from God.

Muftia Tlaib, the 99-year-old grandmother of Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., had some strong words for President Trump after he claimed the elder Tlaib was a “winner” because her granddaughter decided not to visit her in Israel.

“Trump tells me I should be happy Rashida is not coming,” Reuters reported her saying. “May God ruin him.” The nonagenarian was reportedly hopeful that Rep. Tlaib would come despite the Michigan congresswoman’s claim that doing so — on the condition that she wouldn’t promote boycotts of Israel — would humiliate her.

Trump tweeted that grandma came out the winner when Tlaib exposed her intention of using grandma as a pawn in her plan to stir up trouble on her visit to Israel.

And on it goes. I don’t think Maher’s ratings will move one way or the other over all this.

Bill Maher: Yes, a recession would be worth it to get rid of Trump

Westlake Legal Group BillMaher3 Bill Maher: Yes, a recession would be worth it to get rid of Trump The Blog recession real time with bill maher President Trump HBO Bill Maher

The host of HBO’s Real Talk with Bill Maher talk show doesn’t just think a recession is a swell idea to ensure the defeat of President Trump’s re-election bid in 2020, Bill Maher thinks it would be “very worth” it. It’s not even the first time the unhinged Trump opponent has made such a statement.

Back in June 2018, I wrote about Maher’s hope for a good old-fashioned recession. At that time he said, “I think one way you get rid of Trump is a crashing economy. So please, bring on the recession. Sorry if that hurts people, but it’s either root for a recession or you lose your democracy.”

“Sorry if that hurts people.” Bill Maher and his ilk breath such rarified air that when such inane, destructive thoughts pop into their brains, there is no filter. And, his audience applauds his bad behavior. In the opening monologue, Maher refers to Trump’s campaign rallies as Nurenburg rallies, so that’s special. His guests this week are Never-Trumper political consultant Rick Wilson and journalists Betsy Woodruff and Carl Hulse. In other words, three Never-Trumpers, which is standard. What set him off this week? Maher claims that the Trump administration is evil for rolling back job-killing regulations in the Endangered Species Act.

“I’m just saying we can survive a recession,” he continued. “We’ve had 47 of them. We’ve had one every time there’s a Republican president! They don’t last forever, You know what lasts forever? Wiping out species!”

The HBO star then pointed to a U.N. report warning how many species of plants and animals are at the risk of extinction and went on to blast the Trump administration for rolling back regulations from the Nixon-era Endangered Species Act “like any evil villain would do.”

“So yes, a recession would be very worth getting rid of Donald Trump and these kinds of policies,” Maher reiterated. “A recession would definitely knock him out of office.”

I don’t buy Maher’s concern for endangered species and I’ll bet you don’t either. It’s just this week’s excuse to justify an unhinged desire to tank the U.S. economy because it is doing so well for so many Americans. We can’t have that from a Republican president in a presidential election cycle.

He voiced his desire for a recession last week, too, so maybe this will be a weekly part of his panel discussion. It falls well within the Democrat playbook during this political cycle. Have you noticed talk of an impending recession creeping into the talking points of cable news show hosts and Democrat political operatives? The narratives are clear – Trump is a racist white supremacist and a recession is coming, therefore we must elect someone else (a Democrat) in 2020.

This is a “Let them eat cake” moment for Bill Maher. Maher is financially independent and living well within the entertainment world liberal bubble. Whether or not the United States suffers from an economic downturn doesn’t interrupt his daily life, his level of comfort. He’ll be just fine and his life will go on. Recessions have a different outcome for the rest of America.

Recessions mean job loss, family destruction, mental health issues, and economic devastation for the rest of America. How incredibly myopic and selfish does a person have to be to wish economic and emotional suffering on his fellow countrymen simply to appease his own political wishes? Bill Maher takes the term “snowflake” to a whole new level.

There is a bit of panic creeping into the Democrats’ consciousness. A recent Zogby poll shows that Democrat primary voters are not loving their choices this cycle and this benefits Trump’s re-election chances. Zogby, by the way, is a liberal Democrat so his polls skew that way, as a rule.

President Trump’s job approval has continued to rise the last few months. We previously saw a post Mueller report bounce and a strong economy has definitely helped him. But that’s not the complete story as to why the president has reached a peak in his job approval rating. It’s true Trump is riding high on positive economic news-a record high stock market, low unemployment, and solid GDP growth at home. It’s also very plausible he is benefiting from poor performances by the Democratic presidential candidates who have continued to move very far to the left with their policies. The Democrats have floated nationalizing healthcare, strict gun control, “The Green New Deal”, and raising taxes, all which are very unpopular in polling on a national level and in key battleground states.

Overall, a slim majority (51%–27% strongly and 24% somewhat approve) of likely voters approve of Trump’s job as president, while 47% disapprove-37% strongly and 10% somewhat disapprove; only 2% were not sure.

Zogby polling shows approval is up among younger voters and an alarm is sounded because Trump’s support is up with Hispanic voters and African-American voters, too.

Usually, Trump does best with voters over 50, but in our latest poll, he is receiving solid support from voters under 50–a majority of Generation X voters aged 30-49 approved of Trump’s job as president (51% approve/49% disapprove).

Race also played a factor in Trump’s job approval rating. Hispanics, this time around, were much more likely to approve of his job performance (49% approve/51% disapprove), while the president also saw his numbers jump with African Americans. This was his second straight poll with over a quarter support from African Americans (28% approve/70% disapprove). If Trump wins half of Hispanics and a quarter of African Americans in 2020, Democrats will be in trouble!

So, if support is up with younger voters, Hispanic voters, and African-American voters in a Zogby poll, you can rest assured that other polls are showing the same results. This has to be pushing the panic button on every Democrat campaign out there right now. Their preferred narrative to paint Trump as a racist white supremacist – Joe Biden said the Charlottesville rally was the whole reason he decided to jump into the primary race, you know – isn’t doing the job so now they must push the narrative that a recession is just around the corner. Look for more of this rooting for a recession coming from Democrat candidates on the campaign trail as the election cycle progresses.

After the first Democratic debate this week, Bill Maher had a piece of advice for 10 Oval Office hopefuls: Stop running for president.

Here’s what the HBO host told his show’s panel Friday night:

Look, there’s too many people in this race. So we saw them last night and the night before. I’ll give you veto rights, but I’m going to get rid of 10 of them right now. Is that okay? And if you disagree, just say.

Unsurprisingly, Bill doesn’t have any faith in the underdogs. Amid F words, he showed a photo of each candidate:

This guy, Hickenlooper. Nice guy. No, get out. Nice guy. Get the f*** out

This is Michael Bennett. You know if you Google Michael Bennett, the first five that come up aren’t even this guy. Get the f*** out.

Oh, vice principal Delaney. Nice guy. Nothing here. Get out.

Tim Ryan. I think he said one good thing. No.

Kirsten Gillbrand. Al Franken says “Hello.”

Eric Swallwell. I like him. But you know, too young, it looked like he was wearing a toupe last night. Get the f*** out.

He 86’d Marianne Williamson and Andrew Yang…

So what of Beto “Anti-Privileged Millionaire Privileged Millionaire” O’Rourke (here)?

MSNBC host Joy Reid intervened, “Not youth pastor Beto. He reminds me of my daughter’s youth pastor. So, I feel badly.”

Maher quipped,”Here, you can keep the picture. But he’s not looking good.”

How ’bout New York Mayor Bill deBlasio, who wants to confiscate people’s money and decide who to give it to instead (here)?

Bill dropped the hammer:

“And this guy, start spreading the news. You’re leaving.”

So there you have it — Bill’s List of Losers.

What are yours? Who do you think will make it to the finals? Which Democrats look most likely to become the official nominee?

Bill Maher’s 500th show: Trump’s campaign launch was a Klan rally

Westlake Legal Group BillMaher Bill Maher’s 500th show: Trump’s campaign launch was a Klan rally The Blog republicans real time with bill maher racism oprah winfrey KKK HBO democrats Bill Maher Allan Lichtman

No pressure, Oprah, but Bill Maher thinks you are the only sure-thing candidate to beat President Trump in 2020. She’s not running but that doesn’t matter. “Sometimes you don’t choose history. History chooses you.” Oprah Winfrey checks all the boxes, you see, and she is the only logical candidate for Democrats to offer up against President Trump. She’s a part of America’s celebrity culture. Maher reasons that disgruntled Trump supporters would vote for her if only to keep peace in the family.

“There’s no underestimating the power of celebrity in modern American politics…it’s not the way it’s supposed to be, its not the way I’d like it to be but we officially live in a post-literate, post-truth, star-f—er society and this is going to be the dirtiest campaign ever.”

Maher described a core Trump supporter (in short, an angry white guy with three shotguns and a singing plastic fish on the wall) and explained that Winfrey would be the only Democrat who could sway him due to practical considerations. “If he’s fed up with Trump, I know he could vote for Oprah. Because he knows that if he doesn’t his wife will never blow him again.”

The 500th episode of Real Time with Bill Maher is in the books and he took shots at both political parties. In criticizing Republicans, the usual trope that Trump voters are racist hicks was trotted out. He described President Trump’s huge kick-off event in Orlando to launch his re-election campaign as a KKK rally. That shot is what passes for humor these days.

“Did you see this Klan rally he was having there?” Maher joked at the start of the 500th episode of “Real Time,” which he has been hosting since 2003. He added that Trump supporters had a “goldfish memory.”

Maher’s jokes included another standard criticism that folks on both sides of the aisle can agree on – Joe Biden is out of place in the 2020 Democrat primary. His time has come and gone, yet he is still at the top of the heap in the polls.

And what about Joe Biden, the former vice president and presumptive go-to guy for the Dems? When young people look at the 72-year-old Beltway mainstay it’s like “a typewriter is running for president.” Maher, never leery about treading beyond the boundaries of good taste, also identified Biden as a geriatric risk who might drive a car through a farmer’s market crowd.

He mentioned Hope Hick’s testimony to a House committee and turned that into a racial slam, too. It’s really desperation time for Democrat voters, it seems. Hope admitted she told white lies while working for President Trump. That prompted Maher to say, “That’s Trump for you. Even the lies have to be white.” As you can see, none of this banter is bold or edgy. The Bill Maher of earlier days is long gone. Maher’s guest, Dan Savage, was happy to chime in that the Republican Party is “controlled by racists.” Yawn.

Allan Lichtman, a historian, and leftist that Democrats drag out every presidential election cycle because he has a stellar record for correctly predicting who will be the next president, has a new book out calling for the impeachment President Trump. The studio audience liked when he bashed both political parties.

Lichtman arrived on stage plenty fired-up about impeachment and drew a hearty ovation from the studio audience at CBS Television City in Los Angeles when he called out the failings of both major political parties. “We have in America today, two parties: We have a Republican party with no principles, but a spine, and we have a Democratic party with principles, but no spine. The Democrats have a chance to get courage.”

It’s hard to believe that Bill Maher has lasted as long as he has with this HBO show. He is in his 17th season. He is also marking the 30th anniversary of his first HBO comedy special. He’s had eleven of those so far.

“We went on the air in 2003,” Maher deadpanned. “Since then, weed has become increasingly legal, religion is on the decline, and less people are having children. You’re welcome, America.”

You know what America needs? A show about teens starring a Disney star that’ll leave parents “totally f***ing freaked out.”

So thinks HBO and 34-year-old creator Sam Levinson, son of Rain Man director Barry Levinson.

Hence, the cable network’s new program, Euphoria, starring Zendaya — the young girl who made a splash on Disney Channel show Shake it Up.

And what’s it gonna offer the young and impressionable, about the young and impressionable?

Here are a few gifts of note, as per The Hollywood Reporter:

  • Graphic nudity, including one scene displaying roughly 30 completely naked young men
  • Rape, courtesy of a prosthetic penis
  • Sex with choking
  • Masturbation over a webcam

It ain’t exactly Saved by the Bell.

What kind of a world is this sort of teen-targeting entertainment creating?

It’s creating one, apparently, in which Zendaya’ll be taken seriously as an actress.

Gotta cut that Disney cord:

“We can get away with a lot of s**t with comedy. I’ve only really done family movies, so everybody sees me a certain way and doesn’t assume that I can do [a part like this] — or that I want to.”

As per THR:

[She’d] been searching for a reputation-busting role that would signal her transition from Disney Channel to adult actress.

It’s gonna bust it, alright.

But don’t worry — the drug use, in addition to the bulletted list above, ain’t about shock value.

So says Casey Bloys, HBO’s president of programming:

“It’s not sensational to be sensational. It may seem boundary-pushing, and the idea of putting them on TV may be, but somebody lived them.”

But also…well, I’ll just let the Reporter take the reigns here:

Despite HBO’s enthusiasm for authentic and edgy content, the network does have its limits. According to Levinson and Zendaya, execs pushed back on two scenes. One was the opening shot, which in the final version begins with Zendaya’s character narrating her birth. “I was repeatedly crushed over and over by the cruel cervix of my mother,” she says as a CGI clip of herself as a baby in utero plays onscreen. But Levinson actually wanted to start with a dolly shot that began on the lights in the hospital room, boomed down behind a doctor and went straight between her mother’s legs and into her vagina. “They were like, ‘Nah, you can’t open it that way,’ ” says Levinson. “I just thought, ‘It’s a battle I don’t need to fight right now.’” They had already shot the scene, though, and actress Nika King, who plays Zendaya’s mom in the show, says she had another actress step in to portray the most intimate part. “Her vagina got credit, don’t worry,” she says. “It’s on IMDb Pro, I promise you.”

And there’s this:

[F]ormer HBO chairman Richard Plepler would often tell people the series makes Netflix’s teen suicide drama 13 Reasons Why look like an after-school special.

That’s nice.

So parents, prepare for a freak-out. Says Sam, who wrote all eight episodes:

“There are going to be parents who are going to be totally fucking freaked out.”

Not so long ago, America’s youth were entertained by television fare such as Gilligan’s Island and The Brady Bunch. We see the generations turned out by those; what’s this generation going to be like? How about the next?

Rep, Katie Porter (D-CA-45) appears on Bill Maher’s “Real Time” show. 6/8/19. Screen grab via HBO.

I’m not so sure what was worse about Rep. Katie Porter’s (D-CA-45) appearance on Bill Maher’s show Saturday night:

Her casually ghoulish explanation to Maher about how his mother had the right to abort him, or the audience’s and panel’s uproarious laughter that followed.

The Hill recaps what went down on the Saturday edition of HBO‘s “Real Time”:

Rep. Katie Porter (D-Calif.) drew laughs from the audience while defending a woman’s right to choose Saturday night, after Real Time host Bill Maher joked about being “squishy” on his “pro-choice” views.

“They told my mother after my sister, very difficult birth, she shouldn’t have another one. So knowing I could’ve been on the cutting room floor…why is that so terrible?” Maher said.

Porter quipped back at the comedian: “Your mom made her choice, and we’re all here with the consequences of that choice.”

“I just want to say God bless Ms. Maher, God bless her for having you. I’m sure it wasn’t easy,” Porter said, adding the point is “she made her choice.”

Watch video of the disturbing exchange below:

Instead of being shocked at Porter’s remarks – where she told the host of the show who invited her on that it would have been ok if his mother had terminated his unborn life, an assorted variety of left wingers, commentators, and even Democratic politicians praised Porter’s “owning” and “roasting” of Maher on the abortion issue.

Porter herself was obviously extremely proud of the clip, because not only did she tweet it out and add additional comments to it, but her profile picture is now an image of her from the show:

If Maher really would have been on his toes, he would have asked Maher if she’d have been ok with her mother aborting her. Militant pro-aborts really hate it when you ask that question, and usually try and dodge it by saying we “shouldn’t engage in hypotheticals” – even though hypotheticals are hallmarks of their justification for abortion on demand.

That Porter’s callous remarks were so well-received by members of her Democratic pro-abortion tribe just goes to show how deeply seeped into the American conscience the “right” to kill an unborn child actually is, and how much work the pro-life community still has to do to overcome it.

Bill Maher asks HBO panel: “What if Trump killed his negotiating team?”

Westlake Legal Group BillMaher Bill Maher asks HBO panel: “What if Trump killed his negotiating team?” The Blog real time with bill maher President Trump HBO Bill Maher

It was a question that baffled even the most unhinged of anti-Trumpers. For HBO talk show host Bill Maher it was just another random stream of consciousness during a panel discussion, but his guests were taken aback when he asked a question while trying to make a point about Republican leadership’s loyalty to President Trump. “What if Trump killed his negotiating team?”

Bill Maher, like most perplexed Democrats, doesn’t understand why Republicans in leadership don’t push back more frequently on President Trump. What they fail to understand, even after more than two years into his first term in office, is that President Trump is overseeing the implementation of a quite conservative agenda. His methods are often unconventional, as is his manner of speaking, but that doesn’t matter to his supporters. The important thing is his performance in office when it comes to promoting a conservative agenda. On that subject, he receives a very high mark. His approval rating with Republicans hovers around 90%. The political left hates him and doesn’t understand why everyone else does not.

Maher offered up a hypothetical question and justified it by conflating the little dictator in North Korea with the leader of the free world. Like ya do. He said that Kim Jong Un, according to reports, recently killed off his entire negotiating team, so what would happen if President Trump did the same thing? Would Republicans finally be pushed to stand up to the president if he began killing off Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and National Security Adviser John Bolton? Would Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell do something then? The panel acted as you might expect. Instead of asking their host if he lost his effing mind, one panelist asked if that was a real question.

The panel seemed baffled by the inquiry.

“Is that a real question?” New York Times columnist Charles Blow laughed.

“Yep, it is,” Maher responded. “I’m just asking. I don’t know. I’m just asking.”

The panel included Rep. Katie Porter (D-CA) and analyst Clint Watts besides Charles Blow. Fortunately, other than puzzled looks on their faces, none of them took the bait and went further down that rabbit hole. How can anyone expect to be taken seriously in criticizing the president if their own behavior is as off base as that which is perceived to be odd from others?

Bill Maher used his monologue time to mock the president and his family’s trip to the UK. He said that President Trump is America’s Royal F**kup. When President Trump and the family left Europe, he said they were fumigating it. He continued the trope used by Democrats in America (and their cohorts in the media) that Trump embarrassed our country overseas.

“England’s Royal Family met America’s royal fuckup,” Maher said, before noting during his trip “Trump continued the time-honored tradition that he has now started of embarrassing this country in every possible shape, form, and way possible.”

The European press, no fans of Trump, reported favorably about the trip. Not to leave any stone unturned, Maher even slammed the deal made with Mexico that averted the levying of tariffs on that country. He opined that Team Trump’s victorious development was due to Trump caving to Mexico and the whole tariff idea was just a “brain fart” from the president. Oh boy. Even a trade deal that is a win for America, after many years of less favorable deals isn’t worth a nod of approval from the haters. Their hate of Trump overtakes their love of what’s best for America.

Meryl Streep on using the term “toxic masculinity”: Knock it off

Westlake Legal Group Meryl-Streep Meryl Streep on using the term “toxic masculinity”: Knock it off toxic masculinity The Blog Meryl Streep HBO Big Little Lies

This is a welcome change of pace from our intellectual betters in the entertainment business. Iconic actress Meryl Streep is making headlines as she promotes the second season of HBO’s Big Little Lies. She’s had enough of the frequent use of the term “toxic masculinity”.

Streep participated in a panel discussion with co-stars Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, and Laura Dern hosted by Vanity Fair. Kidman told a story about a male fan who approached her to tell her how much he enjoyed the show. The show has a mostly female cast, with all the lead characters being female. Streep, the newest cast member, spoke up and interjected that she was happy to hear that. Then she said it’s wrong to label only one gender as toxic, as in “toxic masculinity.”

“Sometimes, I think we’re hurt. We hurt our boys by calling something toxic masculinity. I do. And I don’t find [that] putting those two words together … because women can be pretty f—ing toxic,” Streep said. “It’s toxic people. We have our good angles and we have our bad ones. I think the labels are less helpful than what we’re trying to get to, which is a communication, direct, between human beings. We’re all on the boat together. We’ve got to make it work.”

That is quite a bold admission from Streep, as logical as it is to most people. In the age of #MeToo and Year of the Woman and all the other nods to female empowerment, it is refreshing for a mature woman to say, hey, women can be toxic, too. I mean, who hasn’t known mean girls, especially during school days?

Streep is a long-time advocate for women but often walks a fine line between feminist and what she prefers to be referred to, as a humanist.

Streep is one of Hollywood’s most visible and impassioned champions of women’s rights. She is a spokeswoman for the National Women’s History Museum, and in 2015 announced she was funding a screenwriters’ lab for female writers over 40.

A mother of three daughters and one son, Streep in 2015 rejected the label “feminist” in favour of being described as a humanist. The same year she cameoed as Emmeline Pankhurst in the film Suffragette and, while promoting the film, drew attention to the scarcity of female film critics on the aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes – which has since adjusted its criteria.

Meryl Streep is a founding member of the #TimesUp initiative that originated in Hollywood. #TimesUp is an offshoot of the #MeToo movement. Three hundred Hollywood female elites, including actresses, writers, producers, directors, agents, and executives, came together to raise money for a legal defense fund to provide support for women in the real world against sexual harassment in the workplace.

Reaction to Streep’s remarks isn’t all favorable, which is no surprise. The woke crowd will not tolerate any opinion that introduces common sense disagreement to liberal groupthink. One writer at Jezebel, a popular site for liberal young women, took Streep to the woodshed. She must not know the meaning of toxic masculinity, you see, if she doesn’t appreciate the term. How condescending of her. The young woman lecturing a 69-year-old feminist, er, humanist, on a term that denigrates men in our society simply for exhibiting masculine traits shows her own ignorance. She’ll not realize that, though, riding up there on her high horse. Meanwhile, the rest of us in the land of normal people applaud a public figure who takes a stand on behalf of our sons and husbands because for too long they have been the scapegoats of a feminist agenda that’s outlived its expiration date. Promoting female empowerment and protecting women in the workplace is admirable. Blaming the woes of the world on men is not.
