Are you ready for the next James Bond movie? I am.

And the new villain is gonna be, reportedly, that most dastardly thing of all: eco-friendly.

The Sun reports:

As the plot is shrouded in secrecy, it is not clear what the villain is plotting to do or how 007 confronts him.

But:

[Bond’s] unnamed nemesis – nicknamed Greenfinger by insiders – has a lair powered by an algae farm and with a Zen garden.

Perhaps he’ll do eco things like suspend himself from a bridge just before a national debate, and cost the city millions of dollars.

Aw, dang it:

For now, mum’s the word. Except the eco thing:

Director Cary Joji Fukunaga is so keen to keep the plot under wraps he has reportedly filmed three endings. But an eco-friendly villain would be a Bond first. One theory is that algae blooms can produce deadly toxins.

One source told The Sun Bond’s Enemy #1 will be played by Rami Malek, who won an Oscar for Bohemian Rhapsody. And he’s into slime:

[A] source said: “The baddie’s lair apparently has a giant algae farm.

“Something like that would look very sinister and green so will look great on the screen.”

“Quite how it will impact Bond only the scriptwriters can know but fans will be keen to find out.”

As reported by The Daily Wire, Rami explained to The Mirror he was excited to be in the film, but he demanded his Middle Eastern character not be an Islamic terrorist:

“It’s a great character and I’m very excited,” Malek told The Mirror earlier this year. “But that was one thing that I discussed with [director] Cary Fukunaga. I said, ‘We cannot identify him with any act of terrorism reflecting an ideology or a religion. That’s not something I would entertain, so if that is why I am your choice then you can count me out’. But that was clearly not his vision. So he’s a very different kind of terrorist.”

Maybe he can be the kind of environmental terrorist who shuts down 20+ intersections or petrifies children to the point of them pledging not to reproduce.

Rami said he’s Egyptian, and he wants only positive representations of his people:

“I am Egyptian. I grew up listening to Egyptian music. I loved Omar Sharif,” Malek said. “These are my people. I feel so gorgeously tied to the culture and the human beings that exist there.”

Unfortunately — and, perhaps, yet unbeknownst to the actor — the fact that he’s the villain will mean he’s a mass murderer.

And murdering people for reasons other than religion doesn’t make it any better.

NBC Releases All Former Employees from Their Non-Disclosure Agreements so They Can Bring Charges of Sexual Misconduct

On Friday, NBC made a big announcement.

Following the recent release of Catch and Kill — Ronan Farrow’s book accusing the Peacock of squashing stories and trying to cover up claims against Matt Lauer — NBCUniversal has said they’ll release all alleged victims of sexual shenanigans from their non-disclosure agreements.

As per a statement read by Rachel Maddow on MSNBC, all former employees will be released upon request.

Here’s the statement, in part:

Any former NBC News employee who believes that they cannot disclose their experience with sexual harassment as a result of a confidentiality or non-disparagement provision in their separation agreement should contact NBCUniversal and we will release them from that perceived obligation.

Rachel also clarified, oddly, that there was nothing in the NDA to start with that would legally prevent any whistleblowing where sexual misconduct is concerned.

Ronan’s charged the network of killing the Harvey Weinstein story (which he later took to The New Yorker) — please see here.

However, NBC says there was already a twelve-page report done on their handling of the Weinstein situation, and there will be no further review:

Over a year ago, NBC News released a twelve-page, transparent accounting of the Weinstein reporting. … Once again, we stand by it.

But some in the media are calling Hogwash: Several notable women — including Megyn Kelly, Linda Vester, Addie Zinone, Greta Van Susteren, Eleanor McManus and Gretchen Carlson — have signed a letter touting further investigation:

Certain network executives have enabled a corporate culture of widespread sexual harassment and abuse, and are still trying to cover it up today. [NBC parent company Comcast] must prove to its shareholders that it will pursue the truth on behalf of NBC staffers. If necessary, it should remove executives who have abused or silenced women.

NBC’s 2017 internal probe after Matt Lauer was fired found no “contrary evidence” that he’d done anything wrong prior to November 27th — 48 hours before he was fired.

As pointed out by The Daily Caller, reporter Sil Lai Abrams, who charges that NBC muted her rape allegation, took to Twitter Friday to give a tenth of a High Five to the network, with the remaining ninety percent still pending:

The RedState Box Office Report – Few Treats as a Trick is Played on Disney

Westlake Legal Group BO-3 The RedState Box Office Report – Few Treats as a Trick is Played on Disney Popular Culture Movies Joker Hollywood Front Page Stories Front Page Featured Story Featured Post Entertainment Disney box office report Allow Media Exception

Promotional posters courtesy STX Pictures, A24 releasing, 101 Studios

A wide mixture of chills to select from this holiday frame.

This has been an October where expectations are tough to be met, and this weekend was more of the same. An expected hit for a major studio has not hit, and people are still trying to grasp the significance of a major hit title.

There are some horror titles offered up, as well as some new dramatic offerings for the holiday, but little in the form of event pictures. So the mixed bag delivered mixed results. A slate of new arrivals is seen but these are mostly smaller features with no chance of unsettling the top of the chart this week. So here is the holdover-intensive list for the Halloween weekend.

1. JOKER – $18.9 Million
Another strong performance as it drops only -35%. After a month in release it has yet to have a weekend where it fell over -50%. We discussed the making of the film this week on The Culture Shift podcast, where we discussed how Warner Brothers actually tried to dissuade director Todd Phillips from making this, as it was considering listening to the bickering from actor Jared Leto who played the character in “Suicide Squad”. Imagine the fortunes the studio had missed out on had they listened to an actor’s ego. This weekend’s result takes the film over the $275 million level, but bigger than that — it is now globally the most successful R-rated film of all time. Ryan Reynolds, star of the previous record holders, was congratulatory.

2. MALEFICENT: MISTRESS OF EVIL – $18.53m
Less than $400,000 separated the top 22 titles, but this is the newer release, with the heft of Disney behind it and is based on a significantly successful property. This one is seriously underperforming for the House of Mouse. After two weekends it has yet to match the opening for the original, which basically doubled the returns by this same stage.

3. THE ADDAMS FAMILY – $11.7m
Not doing blockbuster numbers but this is managing to attract enough interest to its front door to be considered a qualified hit. The international figures are just slightly better so United Artists has to be happy with this gloomy animated comedy.

4. ZOMBIELAND 2: DOUBLE TAP – $11.6m
Coming off a respectable opening this is a bit of bad drop for week-2. This plunges -68% after a decent opening, a sign that word of mouth recommendations is not carrying things enough. As of now it is pacing in line with the original film, but is expected to start lagging in the next couple of weeks.

5. COUNTDOWN – $9.0m
The small studio STX makes a bid for some quick pocketing of profits with this low budget attempt at a Halloween cash-grab. A nurse downloads a phone app that predicts when you will die. She is told she has 3 days, and learns the accuracy of the app is unique. Made for less than $15 million this return was slightly better than expected and means there is a likelihood of profit, after all of the secondary and tertiary marketss (home video, cable rights, etc.)

6. BLACK AND BLUE – $8.32m
The highest debut of the week is this police procedural set in New Orleans surrounding corrupt cops on the street, from Sony/Screen Gems. Made relatively cheap and given scant promotion means there is a minimal risk for the production. There is enough audience support (80% favorability) that in the coming weeks it should leg out to enough to justify the budget.

7. GEMINI MAN – $3.9m
It has been a disappointment stateside (just over $40 million at this point) but the hoped-for foreign money has not arrived either. While a Chinese co-production the film has not landed the audience in that country, and other foreign markets are also a letdown. It is projected that the film could end up losing $75 million to be absorbed by the numerous studios involved.

8. THE LIGHTHOUSE – $3.08m
Expanding into over 550 screens this critically praised drama-horror offering is set in the 1880s with Willem DeFoe and Robert Pattison. Shot in black-and-white it chronicles the unraveling of two souls on a remote island off the coast of New England. Call it arthouse horror.

9. THE CURRENT WAR – $2.73m
This is a drama centered on the competition between Thomas Edison and George Westinghouse to control the electrical grid for society. Originally it was orphaned in the collapse of The Weinstein Company. This was the last film that Harvey Weinstein was working on when his scandal erupted in 2017, and he attempted to rush it into theaters to salvage his name, hoping it would be an Oscar contender. Eventually it fell into the hands of an investment firm, but through some contractual wrangling, the rights fell back to the director. Newly formed 101 Studios is releasing, but with little promotion behind it.

10. DOWNTON ABBEY – $1.95m
It will be interesting to see if Focus Features works to keep this in release long enough to reach the $100 million plateau. It stands at just over $92 million at this stage.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., questions FBI Assistant Director of the Counterterrorism Division Michael McGarrity, during a House Oversight and Reform Civil Rights and Civil Liberties subcommittee hearing on confronting white supremacy and the adequacy of the federal response, Tuesday, June 4, 2019, on Capitol Hill in Washington. (AP Photo/Jacquelyn Martin)

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) may have just set a time record for flip-flop hypocrisy.

Check what she tweeted about the Republicans fight for transparency and protesting the closed door ‘impeachment’ hearing.

“There have been many aspects of the GOP’s little flash mob that have relied on mountains of entitlement and privilege, but them *asking* the police to be arrested is just…Well, let’s just say my community would find it hard to understand why *anyone* would ask to be arrested,” she preened.

Is she kidding?

Getting arrested for the sake of a photo op is a staple of every leftist protest almost since leftist protests were invented.

We’re not sure exactly who/what she’s referencing when she says “my community” (other women from Westchester who were the daughters of architects?) but here’s a shot of her sister squad member, Rep. Rashida Tlaib, “taking the arrest” for the cause.

And let’s not forget this memorable moment, although we’re not sure it resulted in an arrest.

Valerie Jarrett, of all people chimed in, responding to AOC.

Far left/socialist community?

But just one day after Ocasio-Cortez claimed that no one would dare “ask for arrest,” she retweeted the show arrests of Ted Danson and Jane Fonda over climate change on Friday.

Fonda spoke last week how she would be protesting on Fridays and getting arrested to highlight the fight for climate change this month. Then after she solves climate change this month, she’ll leave D.C. and go home.

Danson declared himself Fonda’s new “trainee” and said that arrest “sharpens the mind.” He encouraged others to “come down and get arrested.” Because why not? It doesn’t matter that he gets arrested, but hey, why not encourage kids to get a record and possibly hurt their records and job prospects.

But guess that the show arrests of the incredibly wealthy Hollywood actors Ted Danson and Jane Fonda don’t qualify as “entitlement” and “privilege.”

Just the arrests of those fighting for transparency for the American people do.

Promotional screen shot from ‘Joker’, courtesy Warmer Brothers Pictures

I think there’s something about the social justice warrior internet outrage brigades that just causes people to want to see what it is that has the hard-left so upset.

Hilariously, it used to have the opposite effect. Long ago, upsetting the SJWs would result in apology tours from artists and creators. Theaters may have even refused to show the movie. Nowadays, learning that you’ve disturbed the online wasp nest is the same as hitting triple sevens on the slot machine.

The latest outing from Todd Phillips and Joaquin Pheonix, the disturbing and dark movie “Joker,” has now achieved the throne for top-grossing R-rated movie of all time, and it was the number one target of pseudo-moral busybodies, SJWs, and leftist critics the world over.

The Hollywood Reporter has the details:

The Warner Bros. film has become the top-grossing R-rated film of all time, not adjusted for inflation, with a global box office haul of $788.1 million. It is expected to cross $800 million Friday or Saturday.

In other words, it’s well deserved.

Let me be clear. The movie is excellent. As I wrote in my review, this is a masterpiece of a movie that I think will be studied in film schools for years. How Phillips managed to pull off the kind of storytelling he did with the dark, gritty, depressing, and oppressing elements he used and keep it this watchable is something that amazed me.

(READ: Review: “Joker” Is A Superb Movie That I Never Want To See Again)

The film deserves this honor, and if the outrage from the left helped generate these sales totals, then all the better.

You’ll recall that the worry was that the story of Arther Fleck, a mentally disturbed man with a deep-seated wish for violence and a penchant for delusion, would cause incels to take up arms themselves and begin killing people left and right. They believed that in an era where we have Trump as the leader of the free world, this kind of movie would inspire violence.

They even began posting police and security guards outside theaters to make sure nothing bad happened.

They attacked it from every angle to the point where Phillips vocally spoke out against the PC police that were attacking his film relentlessly.

(READ: “Joker” Director Todd Phillips Smacks Social Justice Warriors And Their PC Culture)

And nothing bad did happen. Despite all the media pearl-clutching and doomsaying, no blood was ever spilled over the movie. The media didn’t get what it had been prophesying.

I’d even venture to say it didn’t get what it was hoping for. Nothing would have pleased the media more than spilled blood to report about, and the chance to say that it’s been right about this all along. Look at how they react whenever there is a shooting. The amount of finger-wagging and preaching they do before the bodies have even cooled shows just how eager they are.

Thankfully, the wishful thinking of the media never occurred.  “Joker” went on to great success and zero bloodshed.

This film is worth celebrating, not condemning. It deserves the success it’s achieved.

No matter where 2020 Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Kamala Harris goes, she faces an uphill battle.

Nationally, she’s polling in a distant 5th place. In Iowa, where she vowed to “f**king move” in order to win over Democrats in the crucial caucus state, her campaign is cratering.

She’s not doing any better in South Carolina, which has a large percentage of black Democratic voters, nor in New Hampshire.

But it’s her home state of California that perhaps more than any other state is showing her the writing on the wall.

Over a month ago an Emerson University survey showed her in 5th place in California behind Andrew Yang.

Unfortunately for Harris, her numbers in there among Democratic primary voters have not gotten any better over time:

Less than five months before Californians vote in the 2020 presidential primary, a new Change Research poll for KQED shows U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris losing ground to the front-runners, Sens. Elizabeth Warren from Massachusetts and Vermont’s Bernie Sanders.

The poll, taken after last week’s Democratic candidate debate, finds Warren is the top choice of 28% of primary voters, followed by Sanders at 24% and former Vice President Joe Biden at 19%.

South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg is fourth with 9% followed by Harris at 8%. The October survey puts Harris 20 percentage points behind Sen. Warren, compared with a 14 percentage point gap in our September poll.

The poll also shows Harris trailing badly among female voters and Hispanic voters:

By gender, Warren is the top choice of female voters with 31% support, followed by Sanders with 23% and Biden at 21%. Buttigieg and Harris are the choice of 8% and 7% of women respectively.
[…]
Sen. Sanders is the favorite of Latino voters with 28% support, followed by Warren and Biden (22% each), Harris (7%) and Buttigieg (6%). The only Latino candidate, former HUD Secretary Julian Castro, is the choice of just 1% of Latino voters in California.

Harris is in decent shape with black Democrats according to the poll (16%), but she still lags behind Biden (30%) and Sen. Bernie Sanders (20%).

As I’ve said before, I believe she’s sticking around at this point as an audition of sorts for vice presidential consideration, but considering she’s in bad shape across all key demographics, I’m not sure how much good she’d do in terms of the female/black vote for Biden or Sanders should they become the nominee. And the possibility of Warren picking another woman as her running mate is very low.

Of course, general elections are much different than primaries so there’s still a chance she could end up as the eventual nominee’s running mate. But as far as her chances go for the nomination itself, it’s all over but the crying at this point, especially when you consider the fact that no recent candidate for president has gone on to be their party’s nominee without winning their home state.

Once Again, the Left Promotes Violence Toward the Right, This Time Against Rand Paul

It wasn’t but a handful of days ago that the left and the media were losing their collective minds over a year old video of Trump’s head being superimposed over a character during a scene from a violent movie. We were told that this kind of promotion of violence was inexcusable and would only promote real-life violence.

Since then, we’ve had instances of leftists promoting violence against the right, including Antifa telling a church that they’d bring out a guillotine if they played a movie about Jordan Peterson and a woman being assaulted for being pro-Trump.

If you include all the other instances of violence being overly celebrated by the left against the right, you’ll find that the pattern is that it’s okay for the left to visit harm on the right, but the right better not even joke about doing it to the left.

We can now add Bette Midler to those who hold that position.

On Wednesday, Midler became angry over Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul calling the Kurds “ingrates” for throwing refuse at American troops despite fighting to help free them from the clutches of ISIS. Midler didn’t take that well and, instead of putting up a well thought out and reasonable argument, told everyone to be thankful for Rand Paul’s violent neighbor who assaulted him.

“I DO NOT promote violence,” began Midler before she continued by promoting violence, “but… Rand Paul says the Kurds are being “ingrates” for taking their frustrations out on US troops. Which is a good reminder for us all to be more grateful for the neighbor who beat the sh*t out of Rand Paul.”

Midler is, of course, referring to the attack on Paul by his neighbor. Paul suffered six broken ribs, damage to his lungs, and two bouts of pneumonia as a result of the attack on him. Paul described the recovery as a “living hell.”

This attack and the celebration of it is just one more example of why the left shouldn’t be taken seriously when it begins hyperventilating about “violence” from the right. Between the promotion of attacks, actual attacks, and groups like Antifa that actually promote further violence, the left has no room to talk.

This is actually the second time Midler has celebrated the violence against Rand Paul. The first was in February of last year when she asked where Paul’s neighbor was after he filibustered the Senate to stop Republicans from raising spending caps.

She’s not the only celebrity that celebrated Paul’s attack. Tom Arnold has also tweeted his approval of the violence Paul suffered, and his tweet was retweeted by Rep. Ilhan Omar.

Remember Jussie Smollett?  It’s only been 9 short months since everyone was in an uproar over the hate crime (allegedly) perpetrated against him on a cold Chicago sidewalk in the wee hours of the morning.  As the story regarding the incident quickly morphed into questions regarding what actually happened in the reported attack (READ: here and here), the focus of the investigation shifted to Smollett himself.

As detailed last month by RedState’s Brad Slager, the City of Chicago has been seeking reimbursement from Smollett for the roughly $130,000 expended in police overtime and attendant costs incurred while investigating Smollett’s claims. Smollett’s team moved to dismiss that lawsuit, filed in April.

Yesterday, a federal judge denied Smollett’s Motion to Dismiss, paving the way for the suit to proceed. Per CNN,

Tuesday, US District Judge Virginia Kendall denied Smollett’s request to dismiss the lawsuit, allowing the case to proceed to the discovery phase.
William J. Quinlan, an attorney representing Smollett, said Tuesday the court’s decision was not surprising and that his client expects to be “vindicated” once he shares his side of the story.
Mr. Quinlan understandably is being a staunch advocate for his client. I, on the other hand, remain highly skeptical that Jussie will be “vindicated” (not sure why that’s in sneer quotes in the CNN piece – do you suppose they have their doubts, too?) any time in the near future.

Second Narrows Watchmen Graffiti (Image: Wikimedia Commons)

The great genius of Alan Moore’s Watchmen graphic novel series is how in 12 issues it gives us an alternate history in which the world is protected by superheroes who are not particularly super nor heroic. Dr. Manhattan, Ozymandias, Rorschach and the rest are flawed and complicated, make questionable moral decisions, and are ultimately mostly human.

But they believe in something, even if it means sacrificing everything.

The reboot on HBO — which Moore wants nothing to do with but his writing partner Dave Gibbons is a consultant for — continues that world and the morally ambiguous characters and plot lines in a fascinating pilot episode that, if the trend continues, should be a fun and thought-provoking watch.

And it comes at a good time, as modern America churns like the Watchmen graffiti up at the top of the page. On the podcast, I discuss at least two other areas where morality gets a bit hazy for people who — like the Rorschach of the original series and the white supremacist group that has adopted his mask in the new series — see the world only in ever-shifting blobs of black and white.

It makes for the perfect background for today’s show discussion of Attorney General Barr’s shifting focus toward the former head of CIA John Brennan in his investigation of the origins of the Russia collusion probe, and a chat about the upcoming documentary “No Safe Spaces” about the campus-led assault on free speech.

The Watchmen reboot is sandwiched between these two topics, possibly as a link between things that have no apparent common ground except the chaos that surrounds them.

Which, if you’re familiar with Moore’s work (and which you’ll notice immediately about the new show), is pretty much what Watchmen was about: Chaos. And how we live it and try to make sense of it when perhaps we’d be better off simply embracing it.

THR: Will China’s influence in Hollywood block No Safe Spaces from theaters?

Westlake Legal Group no-safe-spaces THR: Will China’s influence in Hollywood block No Safe Spaces from theaters? The Blog NBA Commissioner Adam Silver NBA Hollywood Dennis Prager China Adam Carolla

Surprisingly, the answer to this question appears to be no … for now. The upcoming documentary No Safe Spaces by comedian Adam Carolla and my friend and colleague Salem* Radio host Dennis Prager opens on Friday. The Hollywood Reporter’s Paul Bond writes that its distributor is thus far succeeding in adding “hundreds” of more screens for the free-speech film, thanks in large part to the NBA’s craven surrender to China:

Capitalizing on the controversy swirling around China, which censors the internet and Hollywood movies, a documentary film from comedian Adam Carolla and talk-show host Dennis Prager that tackles free speech is beefing up its theatrical distribution plans.

On Monday, The Hollywood Reporter obtained two exclusive clips from the movie, called No Safe Spaces, that directly take on China. They are a couple of risky scenes, given China-owned AMC Entertainment is set to exhibit the film in several of its theaters early in the film’s distribution pattern.

“Free speech is unique to the United States; in Russia and China you go to jail if you say anything nice about gay people,” Carolla says in one clip. In another, a cartoon character dubbed Firsty sings, “I’m the First Amendment; without me you’d be living in China,” in a scene meant to invoke images of a protester who stood down a tank in Tiananmen Square in 1989.

Carolla and Prager have been working on No Safe Spaces for a considerable amount of time, long before the NBA scandal erupted. Now that it has, however, both the NBA and Hollywood have gotten mighty defensive about their relationships with Beijing and the Xi government as critics scrutinize it more closely. That makes their documentary even more timely, but it also appears to put its distribution on a collision course with China’s economic power:

No Safe Spaces was to screen a couple of times in Harkins Theatres in Phoenix on Oct. 25 then slowly roll out from there, but Harkins added several screenings and the distributor, Atlas Distribution, says it has been scrambling to get wide more quickly by booking hundreds more theaters, including many owned by AMC. Dalian Wanda Group purchased AMC for $2.6 billion in 2012, making China’s largest private company also the worldwide leader in theater chains.

That’s one aspect of China’s influence on the American film that has gone largely unnoticed. There has been plenty of discussion in the wake of the NBA’s craven retreat from Beijing about how access to the box office in China impacts and influences how films are written and produced. Studios, especially those involved in big-budget films, tend to adapt storylines around China’s sensibilities, with some efforts much less subtle than others.

This information points to another subtle influence — access to American theaters. Bond describes Dalian Wanda Group as a “private” company in China, but just how “private” any company in China’s communist-controlled economy can be is an open question. The Xi regime had no problem using regulators to yank back on Dalian Wanda’s leash a couple of years ago when they thought the company was getting a little too global for their tastes. One has to wonder whether Beijing will exercise that same sort of oversight when it comes to running films critical of China. So far so good, Bond reports, but it might not stay that way.

No Safe Spaces isn’t primarily about China anyway, as the Christian Post noted last week. It focuses much more on the way political correctness in the US has morphed into flat-out censorship and fascism, especially on college campuses:

In “No Safe Spaces,” comedian and podcast record-breaker Adam Carolla teams up with popular radio talk show host and author Dennis Prager to travel the country exploring how relevant the First Amendment is today on college campuses and across the U.S. The two men also talk to progressive and conservative experts and explore their own upbringings to highlight the intolerance in America today.

“What’s happening now in the United States is you are not to be heard on a college campus or at your place of work, this is brand new,” Prager says in the film.

Here’s just one of the stories told by Carolla and Prager:

Dennis and I will be at an AM 1280 The Patriot event this evening in the Twin Cities to discuss the film as well as many other issues. Larry Elder, another of my Salem Radio colleagues and friends, will join us on stage. The main event will take place at 7 pm CT, so if you’re in the Twin Cities, drop by and see us.

By the way, NBA commissioner Adam Silver still insists that engagement is the way to go with China, and indeed that the league has “no choice” in that regard. Jim Geraghty wonders what would change his mind from that conclusion:

Silver’s attempt to reframe the discussion in terms of “isolationism” term is an inartful dodge. No one’s complaining about the NBA’s programs in Senegal, the Philippines, the Czech Republic, Argentina, Bahrain, or Canada. (The Portland Trail Blazers did end their sponsorship with a rifle scope manufacturer who has contracts with the Israeli military, but the team insists it has nothing to do with anti-Israel protests.) The current controversy has nothing to do with NBA exhibition games in Japan, or Vancouver, or Mumbai, or foreign players on NBA rosters. This isn’t about abstract “isolationism,” this is about how the NBA, its coaches, and players instantly went quiet about Chinese human-rights abuses as soon as it became clear that speaking out would jeopardize the league’s lucrative deals in that country.

Nor is Silver’s description of “attempt a better understanding of other cultures” particularly accurate. This isn’t a divide over cultures, this is a divide over government policy. The Chinese government is currently cracking down on protesters in Hong Kong through violent means, and Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey wrote one tweet about it. The Chinese government responded with full-spectrum outrage. The Chinese government believes that no one in the NBA should criticize their policies, and the NBA players, coaches, and league officials appear to agree. When Laura Ingraham tells the players to “shut up and dribble” in response to criticism of Trump, the league and its players are defiant. When Xi Jinping effectively says the same through policy choices and state media, the league and its players meekly acquiesce. …

What would Silver have to see to conclude that the NBA’s partnerships in China are no longer worth pursuing? … We never seem to reach the point where advocates say, “oh, no, wait, we were wrong, this approach isn’t working at all.”

Probably at the same point as those sweet, sweet Chinabucks stop flowing to Silver and the rest of the NBA. And, for that matter, to Hollywood. Let’s hope No Safe Spaces can get onto those screens without Beijing’s bowdlerization.

Note: For full disclosure, Hot Air is owned by Townhall Media Group, a subsidiary of Salem Communications. Dennis and I have known each other for years and have participated in many events together, including tonight’s event in the Twin Cities. No one at TMG or Salem participated or directed in the writing of this post. Other than me, of course.
