The RedState Box Office Report – Gerard Butler Works the Labor Day Weekend

Gerry manages to rise up with “Fallen” yet again.

As I have stated prior, this stretch of the calendar is looked at by Hollywood as a lull in the schedule and this weekend proves that true. Despite the labor day weekend providing an extra day there are no major new releases, as traditionally families travel or look to many other activities.

The weekend total of the top-10 films combined makes for the third-lowest of the year. This makes for the third weekend in the month of August to register in the ten-weakest weekends of the year. These low fortunes will change by next week when the second chapter of the massively successful “It” arrives in theaters. Here are the films that did a bad job on Labor Day.

ANGEL HAS FALLEN – $11.57 Million
This third installment of the Gerard Butler franchise continues to exceed expectations. After doing better than projections last weekend the weekday totals were actually better than the second film, “London Has Fallen”. It seems assured to end up earning more than the final total for “London” of $62 million. The second-week drop of -46% is a strong performance against a decent opening and strong audience scores mean there should be more life ahead for this title. We can take some of the credit, as our month-long #ButlerFest on Twitter certainly helped launch this film to new heights!

GOOD BOYS – $9.19m
This Seth Rogan-produced bawdy youth comedy has been more than resilient, becoming a legitimate hit. It has earned almost $60 million to date, a bit more than expected and it is lingering near the top of the chart. This unique comedy about pre-teen boys has found the perfect niche in a soft schedule.

THE LION KING – $6.7m
Still printing money for Disney, this one is becoming a historical performer. $500 million earned stateside, and another $1 billion in international markets has moved this title to #7 all-time in global box office earnings.

HOBBS & SHAW – $6.28m
It crossed the $150 million level this week, and with more than $500 million in foreign business it is moving towards a $700 million global haul. That should be enough to generate further titles with Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham teaming up for future outlandish adventures.

OVERCOMER – $5.7m
The faith-based offering was discounted at the release but it has steadily drawn audiences during the weekdays and quietly has reached $20 million already. Sony has seen some consistent success in partnering with Affirm Films, tapping into a steady religious audience with low-budget titles that turn a profit.

READY OR NOT – $5.61m
Following a disappointing opening, the arthouse effort has managed to steady itself and is finding some interest. Steady interest and a small drop of -30% has seen a bit of a recovery and has drawn $20 million to this point.

SCARY STORIES TO TELL IN THE DARK – $5.0m
This was likely influenced because of “It”. What would seem like a natural Halloween frame release was instead brought out a month ago, and Lionsgate has been proven wise. It has drawn over $60 million to date which looks better than most predictions had been for this small horror offering for the younger set.

8. SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME – $4.26m
This success has likely been the reason behind the recent feud between Marvel and Sony, The two studios had agreed upon shared rights to the character on film, but following the “Avengers” run, and the last two independent releases being huge Marvel has wanted a larger piece of the profits. Sony, which has the rights to the character has since pulled back. As a sign as to why, It has a chance at becoming the most successful “Spider-Man” release, and is about to move into the top-10 all-time of Marvel titles. This title has been out for 9 weeks and is still showing on over 3,000 screens.

9. DORA AND THE LOST CITY OF GOLD – $4.14m
A sign of how far below expectations this is performing it has now been out a month and has yet to crawl over the $50 million plateaux.

10. THE ANGRY BIRDS MOVIE 2 – $4.11m
Another underperforming release, so far it has not even earned one-third of the original movie’s total, nor one half of its production budget. It is doing better internationally, but not gangbusters.

Backlash: Actor calls for blacklisting Trump’s Hollywood donors

RNC chairwoman Ronna McDaniel, co-chair Tommy Hicks Jr., RNC Finance Chairman Todd Ricketts and Trump campaign manager Brad Parscale will host a fundraiser in Beverly Hills on September 17. The Hollywood Reporter noted that it will be Trump’s first trip to Hollywood since making some pointed remarks about the entertainment industry on the heels of recent mass shootings.

“Hollywood is really terrible,” he answered. “You talk about ‘racist.’ Hollywood is racist. What they’re doing, with the kind of movies they’re putting out, it’s actually very dangerous for our country. What Hollywood is doing is a tremendous disservice to our country.”

Actor Eric McCormack responded to the article by calling for names to be published of everyone in attendance. He wants to “be clear about who he doesn’t want to work with”, you see.

McCormack, born and raised in Canada, was quickly reminded about the freedoms enjoyed by Americans. (He holds joint Canadian and U.S. citizenship.) Lists in Hollywood based on political differences bring up memories of the Cold War and McCarthy’s pursuance of Communists in Hollywood. Isaiah Washington, former cast member on Grey’s Anatomy, tweeted with a question to the CEO of Twitter – Is McCormack’s tweet good for society?

The actor was criticized for sounding like a fascist, too.

It isn’t surprising that McCormack tweeted such nonsense. His membership in #TheResistance is well-known. He’s best known for his role in NBC’s Will and Grace from 1998 to 2006. In 2016, NBC brought the show back with the specific intent to criticize President Trump and his administration. The show’s creators actually thought that resisting Trump’s presidency was a good idea and a great reason to do a reboot of the once popular show. They were wrong.

I watched a few of the shows of the series reboot but it was basically unwatchable. The writing was bad, the jokes were usually non-existent, and there was really no reason for a conservative to watch. It was a shame, too, because I enjoyed the original show, back in the day. Back then it was fresh and a little edgy with openly gay characters but most of all, it was funny. The dialogue was clever and quick-witted. Everyone was subject to good-natured jabs. The reboot was completely one-sided – ugly remarks aimed at Trump and his administration, and Republicans in general. Fortunately, the show was cancelled this summer after three seasons. The show’s ratings steadily dropped each season. It turns out that Americans don’t want such blatant partisan politics in silly sitcoms during primetime viewing hours. Bringing back a show from the 1990s just because Trump won the 2016 election and Hillary was Hollywood’s candidate of choice didn’t work out so well. Just ask the creators and stars of Murphy Brown about it.

Bipartisan political jabs do still work, though, in sitcoms and the reboot of Roseanne is a great example of that. The show was hugely popular but the liberals couldn’t stand it and then Roseanne Barr was caught up in a Twitter kerfuffle of her own making.

Freedom of speech is a one-way street for liberal Americans. Trump knows this and uses it to his advantage. His politically incorrect speech worked to his favor in 2016.

Trump’s fundraiser in Beverly Hills is during Emmy week. There will be numerous events for the television entertainment industry to celebrate itself. The Trump re-election campaign is clever that way. His trip to California will take away some of the spotlight from Hollywood. There is also a fundraiser scheduled in San Francisco – the belly of the liberal beast – on September 17.

A “save the date” invite shows that the president will visit the Bay Area region on Sept. 17 for an event at an undisclosed location hosted by RNC chairwoman Ronna McDaniel, co-chair Tommy Hicks Jr., RNC Finance Chairman Todd Ricketts and Trump campaign manager Brad Parscale. Though polls show that Trump is unpopular in solidly blue California, where Republicans account for less than a quarter of the state’s registered voters, Dhillon predicts that Trump’s events will sell out quickly.

“Every presidential candidate who has the potential to raise money comes to the Bay Area, and I expect he’s going to have a series of very successful fundraisers here,” Dhillon told POLITICO, “because there are millions of Californians who support him.’’

Let’s hope Dhillon is right. California went completely Democrat in 2018, including Orange County, once a solidly Republican oasis. The Trump fundraising swing through California also includes an event in San Diego on September 18.

The Babylon Bee Takes on the Fauxtrage Mob’s Ridiculous War on Comedian Dave Chappelle – and Wins

In his recent Netflix special “Sticks and Stones“, comedian Dave Chappelle has unleashed hell on cancel culture and fauxtrage mobs, and also turned the tables on liberal arguments when it comes to issues like abortion and President Trump.

Naturally this makes Chappelle Public Enemy Number One to leftists and their outrage army whose sole purpose in life is to find things to be offended about in order to wage social media wars against the offending subject. The idea is to force the object of the mob to shut up or otherwise confirm.

Chappelle has proven over and over again that he’s just not gonna do that.

Because Democrats and so-called progressives have so heavily invested themselves in “identity politics”, under normal circumstances any criticisms of Chappelle would be viewed and called out as “racist” because the comedian is black.

But those rules don’t apply in this case, because Chappelle is doing what fewer and fewer comedians are doing in modern times when it comes to the demands from the left for milquetoast “comedy” and “safe spaces” for minority groups: he’s, in a nutshell, giving them the bird.

With that in mind, the geniuses at the Babylon Bee wrote one of the better takes on liberals and their reactions to Chappelle’s “Sticks and Stones” special:

After some confusion was expressed by casual observers of apparent hypocrisy in their denunciation of Dave Chappelle’s most recent comedy special, liberals from around the country clarified that they only want black voices to be heard when those voices are saying liberal-approved things.

The offended white progressives asked black comedian Dave Chappelle to “keep it down” and “maybe not talk so much” after his comments made them feel uncomfortable, sources confirmed Thursday.

Perfect.

Chappelle, whose political affiliation is unknown, has demonstrated that he’ll call both sides to the carpet politically. But because he doesn’t spare the snowflakes on the left from his politically incorrect wrath, he gets treated like a traitor to The CauseWestlake Legal Group 2122 The Babylon Bee Takes on the Fauxtrage Mob’s Ridiculous War on Comedian Dave Chappelle – and Wins republicans Popular Culture Politics political correctness Ohio North Carolina Netflix Hollywood Front Page Stories Front Page Featured Story Featured Post Entertainment donald trump democrats dave chappelle Culture comedy Allow Media Exception Abortion , as a comedian whose opinions and shows you should ignore because he refuses to march in lockstep with leftist orthodoxy.

Nobody puts Dave Chappelle in a corner, and that includes perpetually fauxfended liberals. Kudos to the Babylon Bee for getting right to the heart of the matter.

Actor Tom Arnold is like the male version of Bette Midler (that’s not a compliment, Tom, in case you’re reading this). When he opens his mouth – or logs on to his Twitter account, what comes out of it often sounds like it came straight out of the deepist, nastiest pits of the Democratic fever swamps.

He’s accused President Trump of murder. He’s threatened to beat up Trump. He’s also told Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX), a war hero who lost his eye serving his country in combat, to man up.

What’s he up to this week? Trying to demean White House Sec. Stephanie Grisham and former White House Sec. Sarah Sanders.

This is the tweet from Grisham that Arnold took issue with:

Arnold, who apparently lurks on Twitter just to troll Trump administration officials, weighed in with the usual class you can expect from a guy like him:

Arnold responded to some of the Twitter users who took exception to what he said:

I’m not typically one to join in on disparaging someone’s looks, but Arnold really asked for it here. Sanders is a lovely, classy woman while Tom comes across as starved for attention and desperate.

Not to mention recent photos of him show he really has no room whatsoever to talk about someone else’s weight.

Like this one with another unhinged leftist:

And this one:

And this one:

I wonder if Tom knows what they say about people in glass houses?

On Tuesday night as MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow was handing off her show to her colleague, Lawrence O’Donnell, he announced that a source had informed him that President Trump’s Deutsche Bank loans had been co-signed by Russian oligarchs. I posted about this here.

In the meantime, on Wednesday morning, President Trump’s attorney sent a brutal letter to NBC Universal brass demanding that both O’Donnell and NBCU “immediately and prominently retract, correct and apologize for the aforementioned false and defamatory statements.” This letter can be viewed here.

O’Donnell quickly fired off the following tweet, and promised to address the issue on his show tonight.

In the meantime, upon hearing O’Donnell’s big scoop last night, actress Alyssa Milano sent off an obnoxious tweet of her own. Classy.

After O’Donnell’s retraction, many were wondering if Milano would delete it.

At 6 pm, it was still up.

By 7:30 pm, it was gone.

Long Time Coming: Marvel Gives the World its First Openly-Gay Male Superhero, and There’s More Where That Came From

It’s happened.

After years of reference by way of interviews and film dialogue, Disney-owned Marvel Studios has announced its first full-on-featured openly gay male superhero.

Studio President Kevin Feige broke the news on Good Morning America Monday, touting the upcoming film series The Eternals and its crew of characters — “the most diverse Marvel’s cast yet, including an openly gay character.”

Kevin explained that the super man’s sexuality will be presented along the lines of “no big deal”:

“He’s married, he’s got a family, and that is just part of who he is.”

Check out the video, starting at 1:38.

Among the cast of Disney’s monumental move: Game of Thrones star Kit Harrington.

Plus: Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, Richard Madden, Gemma Chan, Kumail Nanjiani, and Brian Tyree Henry.

Additionally on the homosexual horizon, the character of Valkyrie in Marvel’s Thor series will be getting some same-sex screen time in the next installment.

At Comic-Con in July, actress Tessa Thompson confirmed Valkyrie’s lesbian longing:

“As new king [of Asgard], she needs to find her queen. That will be the first order of business. She has some ideas. I’ll keep you posted.”

Marvel’s been on a path toward LGBT world-saving for quite some time.

In Spider-Man: Far From Home, one of Peter Parker’s classmates was played by Zach Barack, a woman who identifies as a man.

And in July, actor Tom Holland announced he’s open to Spidey himself coming out as gay.

Avengers: Endgame also got in on the evolutionary action. But, as observed by The Daily Wire, some found it inadequate:

While The Eternals will feature Marvel’s first openly gay male superhero, he won’t be the first openly gay character in the MCU. Avengers: Endgame, which dominated the box office this year, includes a character — named simply “Grieving Man” in the credits — participating in a support group hosted by Captain America/Steve Rogers. Grieving Man, played by co-director Joe Russo, tells the group that he’s dating another man, but it’s difficult to manage in the grim, “post-Snap” world. The moment was met with backlash from some critics, including Gizmodo’s Charles Pulliam-Moore, who were upset about the “inconsequential” manner in which the MCU’s first gay character was presented.

The superhero landscape is certainly changing. We’re turning a corner; surely much more is to come.

Why You Should Definitely Watch Dave Chappelle’s New Stand-Up Special, and Ignore the Outrage Brigades

Westlake Legal Group Capture-9-620x371 Why You Should Definitely Watch Dave Chappelle’s New Stand-Up Special, and Ignore the Outrage Brigades transgender Sticks and Stones racism R. Kelly outrage Netflix michael jackson LGBT Jussie Smollett Hollywood Guns Front Page Stories dave chappelle Culture comedy cancel culture #metoo

I knew I was in for a good time in the beginning as the veteran comedian Dave Chappelle started off his comedy special more philosophically than comedically. Quoting Prince’s “1999,” Chappelle takes the song and makes it into a lesson about depression and suicide by bringing up Anthony Bordain.

Chappelle noted that Bordain was a world traveler, ate the greatest cuisine, and surrounded himself with fascinating people and still hung himself one day. A friend he knew, however, worked his way from being dead broke in the ghetto and clawed his way into a law school where he was a star student. He lost everything after his wife divorced him and took half of what little he had, leaving him destitute, working menial jobs, and living with his mother at 45.

“It never occurred to him to kill himself,” said Chappelle.

While the way he tells the story makes it funny, starting off his comedy special is genius in that it gets the audience into a mindset it carries with it throughout the special. It’s a lesson that we can take with us well after the special has ended too.

Don’t take everything so seriously.

Chappelle’s latest stand-up special is beyond fascinating. Throughout it I found myself laughing out loud at things I shouldn’t be laughing about, and even during segments where I vehemently disagreed with him to the point of feeling anger, it felt good to hear it. That may sound odd, but in today’s society, it becomes risky for a comedian to be offensive and someone having the bravery to offend everyone and not just one group is refreshing.

Chappelle even makes that point early in his routine in a moment that has now gone viral across the internet and even earned quite a bit of attention here on RedState itself.

Chappelle decides he’s going to do impressions and pulls off something rather genius. He starts by doing an impression of the founding fathers who tell a “n****r” to finish the Constitution so that they can go to sleep. The joke isn’t funny in itself, but it sets up the crowd to believe Chappelle is going to go one way when really he’s going the other.

He does a second impression and tells the crowd they have to guess who it is.

“Hey! Durr! If you do anything wrong in your life – duh – and I find out about it, I’m gonna try to take everything away from you, and I don’t care what I find out. IT could be today, tomorrow, 15 – 20 years from now, if I find out, you’re f***ing finished!” said Chappelle.

Before he could even ask who he was impersonating, people were already screaming out “Trump!”

“That’s you!” said Chappelle, pointing at the crowd.

“That’s what the audience sounds like to me!” he continued. “That’s why I don’t be coming out and doing comedy all the time because y’all n*****s is the worst motherf***ers I’ve ever tried to entertain in my f***ing life.”

What follows this is a stand-up routine that covers everything from Chappelle’s hatred of guns but his acceptance of needing to own one, his problems with the LGBT community (he calls them the “alphabet people”), abortion, how the #MeToo movement went overboard, and a takedown of Jussie Smollett. He also covers the Kevin Hart controversy and talks about growing up poor, how he doesn’t think Michael Jackson was a pedophile, and that R. Kelly really did do all the stuff he’s accused of.

Everyone will find something in this special to agree with and laugh about. Likewise, you will find things you disagree with and may even get angry over.

And this is why I believe Chappelle’s “Sticks and Stones” is a must-watch. It’s a pure celebration of honesty from a man during an era when being honest on a public stage may end your career forever. It’s a giant middle finger to the outrage brigades who promote cancel culture.

In other words, it’s everything I miss about comedy. It’s that ability to pull back the curtain on society and expose the ridiculousness that infects it sometimes. It’s comedy in its true form and it’s dying out with Chappelle, Matt Stone and Trey Parker of South Park being among the last of the holdouts.

And rest assured, the outrage brigades are already coming for Chappelle because of “Sticks and Stones.” Vice, for one, is encouraging people to skip it because of Chappelle’s “transphobia” and “misogyny” demonstrated throughout the routine. I won’t go into details as to why they hate it, but I will sum it up for you.

Vice is mad because Chappelle doesn’t treat the left’s sacred cows as the holy things they consider them to be. In their efforts to steer people away from the special, Vice proves Chappelle’s initial claim about the audience correct. Vice goes into things Chappelle said in the past just as Chappelle said they would.

But Chappelle doesn’t care, and I can’t tell you how refreshing that is. Even as I would feel he goes a bit far sometimes in some of his jokes, it just felt good to hear them.

You should watch Chappelle’s latest Netflix special because it’s a celebration of free speech and being honest in the face of mob threats. It’s not clean, it’s definitely not right at times, but it’s definitely fun and may have you looking at certain things like you haven’t before.

Angry because several University of Central Florida students had broken his “no cell-phone” rule, comedian Pete Davidson, who was there to perform at the school’s “Welcome Back” show, burst into a profanity laced rant about millenials instead. Here’s what he had to say to his audience:

You film everything and not enjoy the show for f***ing an hour, then like, I don’t gotta be here. I can just give them their money back, because I don’t give a f***. So, like, whenever somebody else comes to your f***ing town and wants to perform and is f***ing exhausted and flies all the way to the middle of f***ing nowhere to do jokes for you little privileged a**holes, don’t f***ing ruin the show for people who actually wanna be here.

Students at first thought this was part of his act and began to applaud. Davidson quickly put an end to that. “Don’t clap either, because like half of you did it!” And he continued.

That’s what’s f***ed up about our generation. That’s why we’re embarrassing. That’s why the world is gonna end in 25 years, because you’re all f***ing retarded.

You should f***ing grow up. It says ‘no phones,’ it says a thing on there. It’s just like, you’re just supposed to just like behave. I have to have my guy like f***ing patrol you guys like you’re five years old? That’s fucking embarrassing. You should grow up. Where’s the next generation? Don’t you want adults to respect us? Don’t you want your parents to, like, be proud of you? You know how f***ing embarrassing it is to be our age and walk out and know everybody thinks you’re a f***ing idiot? Grow the f*** up.

According to TMZ, when Davidson finally ended his rant, “he did a brief Q&A with the crowd but said he was only sticking around because he had to wait for his Uber.”

Nice.

Unsurprisingly, none of the students were too pleased about his performance and took to twitter to express their feelings.

One student tweeted, “imagine going on a 5 minute … rant about how you hate millennials recording s–t and then tryna backtrack into making it a motivational speech Westlake Legal Group 1f974 Pete Davidson Lambastes ‘Privileged Little A**holes’ At UCF For Breaking No Cell Phone Rule; Video university of central florida Rep. Another wrote, “it was a S–T SHOW! he went on a whole rant bcs a few ppl were recording and he started yelling about how we need to grow up and that we’re r-words and b—— and then he was like mad bcs no one was LAUGHING! u could feel the tension and how uncomfortable it was.”

The Saturday Night Live regular, who sports a tattoo of Hillary Clinton’s face on his lower leg, is no stranger to confrontational behavior.

Davidson famously had an audience member removed from a show in South Orange, NJ. The comedian was setting up a joke about a friend who had passed out in his apartment which he at first thought was a heart attack. He said, “So a funny thing happened to me recently in my apartment … my friend died of a heart attack.”

Someone called out, “Mac Miller!” Mac Miller was another friend who had recently died of a drug overdose.

Another audience member told the New York Post that, “Pete calmly stops his routine and asks the audience to ID the dude that yelled out and that he is going to have to leave. He then asks security to locate the yeller and escort him out…And give him back his money. I don’t want his money.”

He is also well-known for mocking Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX) who had lost an eye in combat. He joked “You may be surprised to hear that he’s a congressional candidate from Texas and not a hitman in a porno movie. I’m sorry. I know he lost his eye in war or whatever.”

Davidson apologized to Crenshaw and Crenshaw even appeared on a later episode of Saturday Night Live with him. Still, he crossed a line with his joke.

At any rate, the students did not deserve to listen to Davidson’s verbal abuse as they began the new school year. He was there to entertain them, not to berate them.

The university issued a statement on Tuesday which read:

Mr. Davidson’s abusive language, particularly his use of a derogatory slur, is contrary to the University of Central Florida’s values of inclusion and respect for all. It’s disappointing that his rant spoiled an event that was meant to welcome students back for the fall semester.

I’ve heard it said that often when we point our finger at others, three fingers point back at us. Could it be that Davidson is the “privileged little a**hole” instead?

As the summer ends, Hollywood moans and moviegoers yawn

Westlake Legal Group GonewiththeWindClarkGableVivienLeigh715 As the summer ends, Hollywood moans and moviegoers yawn Walt Disney Company The Blog Movies Hollywood Disney box office

As summer draws to an unofficial close this week, movie theaters and Hollywood are whining about the disappointing income year of 2019. Or at least that part of Hollywood that isn’t owned by the Walt Disney Co.

Movie ticket sales revenues for the summer, which comprises only a third of the year but usually more than 40 percent of ticket sales, are down two percent for the summer and down over six percent for the year.

Fewer people are going. Which means the ridiculously expensive and lucrative concession sales are down. Poor babies.

Here’s why: It’s the costs, stupid.

The National Association of Theater Owners, which represents the nation’s 40,313 movie screens, plus the 524 surviving drive-ins, claims the average ticket price is down a few pennies this year.

In 1948, when the most popular movies were “The Red Shoes” and “The Three Musketeers,” the average movie ticket price was 36 cents. Ha Ha, you say. But adjusted for inflation that would still be only $2.88 today, compared to the 2019 reality of a little over $9.

Theaters barely break even on ticket sales the first week after release. Movie makers skim that take then big-time. As a film run lengthens, theaters get more of the revenue. But with few exceptions, today’s movies rarely last more than three or four weeks, a fraction of the time it takes to film them.

Which is why concessions cost so much. That $10 bucket of popcorn actually costs only about 50 cents. As one result, although the number of screens has increased, many of us have cut back on movies, become more selective with how we waste our entertainment money.

And that’s what the data shows. Only one original summer movie — Sony’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” — crossed the $100 million level. What about “Avengers: Endgame,” you say? That one jumped the gun, opening on April 26, one week before movie summer began.

Avengers, indeed, has done great, soaking up $858.2 million in the U.S and $1.94 billion overseas. That’s a worldwide haul of $2.8 billion, the most ever, not adjusted for inflation. As always, “Gone With the Wind” remains the top grossing film, adjusted.

Many summers, movie makers counter-program the mega-films, like TV networks scheduling a soapy movie against an NFL night game. But this summer those alternates got destroyed.

“Rocketman” did OK with $96 million. But “Long Shot”, “Stuber” and “Late Night” disappointed with only $30 million or less each.

“The summer of 2019 has been an interesting one with many tough lessons learned and conventional wisdom shattered,” says Paul Dergarabedian of Comscore, an industry tracker.

What’s happening is moviegoers have become more discerning, going for the sure thing like the Rock and Jason Stratham in “Hobbs & Shaw,” the “Fast & Furious” spinoff, and not risking their money on lesser-known non-franchises.

Which brings us to Disney, the studio that’s produced the four highest-grossing movies of the year — Avengers, “Captain Marvel,” “Toy Story 4” and “Aladdin.”

Plus Sony’s “Spider-Man: Far From Home,” which was produced by Disney’s Marvel Studios.

So far, Disney accounts for 35 percent of total U.S. box office revenue this year.

Oh, we neglected to mention, yet to come this year are “Frozen 2” in November and “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” just before Christmas.

Rated TS for Terminally Stupid: Hollywood exec arrested, fired for alleged rape, extortion

Westlake Legal Group hollywood-sign Rated TS for Terminally Stupid: Hollywood exec arrested, fired for alleged rape, extortion The Blog Steven Fabrizio Rape MPAA Hollywood harvey weinstein extortion #metoo

How do we put this story in Hollywood terms? Think Pretty Woman meets Sleeping With the Enemy by way of Harvey Weinstein. A top executive at the Motion Picture Association of America, the body that assigns ratings to all films released in the US, has been arrested in a rape-extortion case. The MPAA fired executive VP and general counsel Steven Fabrizio after Breitbart News first reported the arrest:

A top executive at the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), a top trade association representing heavy hitters and power players from Hollywood in Washington, D.C., has been arrested by Metropolitan Police Department detectives for alleged “rape and blackmail,” a police report reviewed by Breitbart News states.

The police report describes how Steven Fabrizio, who according to his LinkedIn page is the Senior Executive Vice President and Global General Counsel for the MPAA, struck up a relationship with a woman on a “dating website.”

After what the detectives describe as a series of encounters between the woman and Fabrizio, which she claims she attempted to end multiple times, the report says she called the police for help. The report then describes messages sent by the woman to Fabrizio that “were largely composed and sent in consultation with members of the Metropolitan Police Department.”

Variety described the case in more detail later. Fabrizio paid $400 for sex from a girl he met on a “sugar daddy” site, and then decided to extort more for free by threatening to expose her. If she didn’t have sex with him, Fabrizio threatened to ruin her career and her family life, which sounds a bit familiar in Hollywood’s #MeToo era:

According to a police affidavit, Fabrizio is accused of threatening a woman he met on a “sugar daddy” dating site. The police allege that Fabrizio and the woman had consensual sex once on Aug. 19, after which he paid her $400. After that, she did not want to see him again. According to the affidavit, Fabrizio sent numerous texts insisting on a second meeting, and threatening to expose her if she did not comply.

“I know where you live,” he allegedly wrote. “I know where you work. Don’t think — Hospital would be happy to know that it’s young nurses are having sexual for money / Same for your landlord.”

Fabrizio allegedly used those threats to coerce her into having sex again, according to the affidavit. The police allege that he then sent additional texts threatening to tell her parents if she did not continue to have sex with him a couple times a month. The woman called the police. After arranging for another meeting, Fabrizio was arrested outside the woman’s apartment on Friday morning, according to the document.

Sex by fraud or extortion is rape, which means Fabrizio will face a long prison sentence if convicted. Whether he gets convicted remains to be seen, of course, as Fabrizio is considered innocent until proven guilty.

And these circumstances are sooooo unbelievable to have reason to keep a skeptical attitude until all the evidence comes out. Let’s try to parse this out. An attorney who rose to the upper echelon of Hollywood seeks out “companionship” on a sugar daddy website, which seems a little tough to believe on its own. (Is it that tough for the rich and powerful to find dates?) After spending $400 on sex — probably less than he spends on business lunches — Fabrizio then allegedly won’t pay for sex again or look for a more willing partner. Instead, he extorts the girl he met once for more sex by sending oh-so-traceable e-mail threats. Then he is apparently stupid and/or desperate enough to step right into a sting operation because he can’t take no for an answer.

One might say that only in Hollywood could this be possible. As a bad comedy or melodrama.

The MPAA has fired Fabrizio for violating the “behavior” clause in his contract. They should be answering questions about how someone this reckless and foolish got into that position of power in the first place. For the past six years, Fabrizio has lobbied around the world on rights-management issues and anti-piracy initiatives; how many of those places did Fabrizio decide to seek a little company? And how many other lives has Fabrizio threatened to ruin to save a few bucks? With his arrest, more victims might come forward, assuming that any more exist. You can bet that if there are any other victims, they’ll be coming after the MPAA to determine just how much they knew about Fabrizio’s activities, whether there’s a case for damages or not.
