California Does Not Have Jurisdiction Over This

Federalism is too infrequently mentioned.  And when it does come up – it is woefully misrepresented and abused.

Let’s check with our old friend Merriam Webster:

“The distribution of power in an organization (such as a government) between a central authority and the constituent units.”

Our Constitution is fully imbued with decentralized federalism.

The Founding Fathers – were brilliant.  Not only in limiting for what the “central authority” is responsible – but in rightly assigning the policies for which it is.

The Constitution gives the federal government (the “central authority”) a few expressly enumerated powers.  And then the Ninth and Tenth Amendments give all other power(s) to “the States and the People.”

Merriam’s “constituent units” – are the fifty state and very many municipal governments.  Most unfortunately, as government is want to do – the “constituent units” insist on doing (too much) of their stuff…and the central authority’s limited portion as well.

We certainly see this with immigration.

These are the policies this country has with regard to whom and how many from other countries we allow to come here.

Which is clearly a national prerogative – and therefore clearly a federal government prerogative.

But behold the “Sanctuary _____” – States, Cities, Counties, etc.

These non-federal elected officials openly flout our immigration laws – and allow illegal aliens to stay in their jurisdictions.  Worse, they openly obstruct justice – refusing to cooperate with federal authorities on the rare instances they decide to enforce our immigration laws.

These non-federal elected officials – should be in prison.

And as with all things rightly national – pretending it’s local…doesn’t keep it local.

Los Angeles, California has been a Sanctuary City for decades.  Illegal aliens have spent these decades pouring in there – and the result has been a mass disaster area.

But it doesn’t just stay there.  Once they’re in LA – they don’t have to stay in LA.  They can move to anywhere else in America they wish – completely unfettered by the checks rightly and wisely imposed along our borders.

LA’s alleged local preemption of rightly national immigration policy – doesn’t keep it local.  It becomes a national disaster.

As demonstrated by the massive illegal alien problems throughout the country.  Including in far-flung “border areas” like Long Island, New York and Portland, Maine.

This is our non-federal governments – making massive national messes.

So too are they doing with the World Wide Web.

Get that first word – “world.”  We again check with Merriam:

“The earth with its inhabitants and all things upon it.”

Like with immigration, this clearly means the Internet’s rule and regulation – is a federal government prerogative.

Just like with immigration, there are very many reasons the Constitution insists the Internet is federal – whether the fore-thoughtful Forefathers realized all of them or not.

To wit: We are currently in a race with Communist China to be first to the Fifth Generation (5G) wireless Internet.

If Communist China were to beat us to 5G – it would be bad for our economy.

If Communist China were to beat us to 5G – it would be VERY bad for our national security.

Why the Founders made the Internet federal – economy:

We now invite you to (re)visit the Commerce Clause:

“[The Congress shall have Power] To regulate Commerce with foreign Nations, and among the several States, and with the Indian Tribes….”

The most originalist reading….:

“The narrowest definition of ‘to regulate’ is to ‘make regular,’ that is, to facilitate the free flow of goods, but not, except in cases of danger, to prohibit the flow of any good.”

Why the Founders made the Internet federal – national security:

We don’t want Communist China setting global Web standards.  Which they get to do – if they get to 5G first.

There are all sorts of global implications to our World Wide Web policy.  Which is why non-federal governments should be doing…nothing at all to the Internet.

Leftist non-federal officials want very stupid Internet policies imposed.  Policies We the People won’t elect federal officials to impose.  (How dare We not.)

So these provincial officials are unconstitutionally doing it themselves.

Oregon Enacts Net Neutrality Law as Pacific Northwest Trump Resistance Grows

California Lawmakers Pass Nation’s Toughest Net Neutrality Law

Maine Governor Signs Net Neutrality Bill

Again, a reminder – locals messing with national policy…never stays local.

So even if you like a law’s concept – you may not like how this state or that details it.  If you’re to the Right of Karl Marx – you almost certainly won’t like how nation-warping California details it.

California Passes Strict Internet Privacy Law With Implications For The Country

Maine Passes Nation’s Strictest Internet Privacy Protection Law

New Jersey Passes Consumer Privacy Act:

“State laws governing the collection and use of personal information continue to proliferate.”

Again – this is NOT a good thing.

Our nation’s provincial governments are very often…provincial.  In thought and deed.  When they mess with (inter-)national issues – their provinciality is often highly damaging to our nation.

Which of course means provincial officials are more than happy to eviscerate the Constitution’s federalism and damage our national policy – when it means taking more money from us.

Want Cheaper, Better Internet?  Limit the Local Government Shakedowns of Internet Providers:

“(Internet Service Providers) ISPs show up in your area – looking to spend millions or billions of dollars to build or improve their service to you.

“But before they can do that – they must first play ‘Mother May I’ with the government(s) in your area.

“You know, the governments that are already taxing the living daylight out of ISPs.  That now create ridiculous lists of additional demands of ISPs – for the ISPs’ ‘right’ to spend millions or billions of dollars providing you service.

“It’s like very many governments going shopping – with the ISPs’ credit cards….

“The number of cities and towns making…ridiculous demands is staggering.  The wide variety of these ridiculous demands is mind-numbing.

“All of which are geared by government – to find new and additional ways to extract ever more money from the ISPs.”

So…imagine being an Internet Service Provider (ISP).

You have to deal with 194 different nations’ Internet laws, regulations and taxes.  As each enters the US portion of the World Wide Web – and (if you do) you enter each of theirs.

And now you have to deal with fifty different state governments’ Internet laws, regulations taxes?

Oh – and thousands of municipal governments’ laws, regulations and taxes?

What a giant anti-economy, anti-national security, anti-coherence nightmare mess.

The Feds are currently working to restore Constitutional order.

They are looking to streamline the local shakedowns – and preempt the local laws.

God bless each and every one of them for so doing.

Qatar Using Italy to Abuse US: Government Money Warps Everything Everywhere

One hundred-plus countries engage each year in tens of trillions of dollars worth of global trade.

Far too many nations engage in all sorts of anti-free trade actions – so as to warp the markets to their advantage.

And when caught, far too many nations don’t stop their anti-free trade actions – they look for new and innovative ways to continue rigging the system.

To demonstrate an ongoing, rolling, evolutionary scam, we humbly give you – The Open Skies Agreement:

“‘The United States has 120 Open Skies agreements with countries from around the world. The agreements are meant to expand international passenger and cargo flights to and from the United States.’

“Outstanding – until someone starts cheating and lying:

“‘The Partnership for Open and Fair Skies released a report in January 2015 that alleges that the governments of Qatar and the U.A.E. have granted close to $40 billion in subsidies and “other unfair benefits” to its state-owned carriers.

“‘Since then, they say, another $10 billion has been identified as government subsidies.

“‘The Partnership asserts that the subsidies violates the Open Skies agreements and undermines the basic principles of fair and open competition behind the Open Skies policy.’

“A fifty-yard dash is not a ‘fair and open competition’ – if the other runners are putting $50 billion worth of rocks in your pockets.

“You can call this all sorts of things – but you can not call it ‘free trade.’”

Thankfully, Qatar got popped for rigging the system.

Here’s How President Donald Trump’s Open Skies Deal with Qatar Will Help Make America Great Again

Unthankfully, Qatar didn’t start complying – they started an anti-free trade, anti-Open Skies workaround.

In the cinematic classic The Godfather – Part II, we are provided a precursor to Qatar’s latest move.  Mob enforcer Willie Cicci is testifying before Congress – and he has this exchange with Senator Pat Geary:

Senator Pat Geary: I’m interested to know, was there always a buffer involved?

Willie Cicci: A what?

Senator Pat Geary: A buffer. Someone in between you and your possible superiors who passed on to you the actual order to kill someone.

Willie Cicci: Oh yeah, a buffer. (Laughter)  The family had a lot of buffers.

Behold Qatar’s buffer – Air Italy:

Air Italy Is Just Qatar Airways Draped In An Italian Flag:

“Exploring new frontiers in commercial aviation, let’s take a chronically money-losing European airline and put it together with a heavily subsidized Middle East airline and then dramatically boost flying to the United States, even though the Middle East airline had indicated it wouldn’t do that.

“What do you get?

“‘The Italian version of Qatar,’ is what United Airlines CEO Oscar Munoz called it earlier this month, during a conference call with reporters.

“In 2017, Qatar purchased 49% of Air Italy, which very quickly thereafter adopted a Qatar strategy:

“Build a hub with rapid expansion of U.S. service, enabled by lots of new airplanes purchased with government money.”

So Qatar hasn’t stopped their anti-Open Skies mass subsidies of flights into the United States.  They have purchased a foreign front – through which they run their mass subsidies of flights into the United States.

Whether the mass subsidies are in Qatari Riyal or Italian Euro – they are illegal.

I very much appreciate and admire President Trump’s taking on the mind-bogglingly monstrous task of trying to right the very many global trade wrongs the United States has for decades suffered.

One price of the mission – is eternal vigilance.

Having popped Qatar once – Trump must pop Qatar again.  And not just for the sake of the Open Skies Agreement:

“Qatar must be called to account, and not just for its own mischief but for the message that would send to the Chinese and other major U.S. trading partners.

“If Qatar Airways continues to use Air Italy as its proxy, and gets by with it, that would tell China, Japan, Mexico, Canada and Europe they can agree to trade deals and if they’re caught cheating the United States will look the other way. Someone could write a book, and call it ‘The Art of the Steal.’”

Which, by the way, countries like China have already been doing.

NAFTA’s ‘Uninvited Guest’: Why China’s Path to U.S. Manufacturing Runs Through Mexico

Uber-subsidizing China spent decades running trillions of dollars worth of their uber-subsidized goods through Mexico (and Canada) into the US.  To circumvent trade limits imposed upon them because of their uber-subsidies – by abusing the daylight out of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) advantages Mexico and Canada enjoyed.

Which Trump for decades understood.  Which is why he – when he became President – rightly killed NAFTA.

And Trump imposed steel and aluminum tariffs on Mexico and Canada – because China has been running through Mexico and Canada their ridiculously subsidized steel and aluminum.  Which he will remove when NAFTA successor USMCA – which addresses the China buffer – is ratified.

Qatar’s Air Italy – is China’s Mexico and Canada.

A Godfather buffer – to yet again get around the law.

President Trump popped Qatar once.

It’s time for him to do it again.

State Dept Hit With Lawsuit To Force Disclosure Of All Records Relating To Hunter Biden And Ukrainian Energy Co.

Westlake Legal Group Biden-620x378 State Dept Hit With Lawsuit To Force Disclosure Of All Records Relating To Hunter Biden And Ukrainian Energy Co. Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko State Department Prosecutor General Viktor Shokin John Solomon Joe Biden International Affairs hunter biden Front Page Stories Foreign Policy Featured Story corruption Allow Media Exception Abuse of Power 2020

Long-time Washington investigative reporter John Solomon announced on Monday that, with the help of the Southeastern Legal Foundation (SLF), he had filed a federal lawsuit against the U.S. State Department to “force disclosure of all communications records between the State Department (including the U.S. Embassy in Kiev) and Hunter Biden, Devon Archer, Burisma Holdings, Rosemont Seneca Partners, and/or Blue Star Strategies.”

Background:

Devon Archer is Hunter Biden’s business partner. They are co-owners of Rosemont Seneca Partners, LLC (RSP).

Burisma Holdings, is a Ukrainian energy company which paid large sums of money (a minimum of $166,000 per month) to RSP while Vice President Biden was serving as Obama’s “point man” for Ukraine. Solomon reported that the payments were made from the spring of 2014 through the fall of 2015. Also, both Hunter Biden and Devon Archer became members of Burisma’s board of directors.

At the time Biden became the U.S. “point man” on Ukraine in February 2014, President Viktor Yanukovych had sought asylum in Russia following the deadly “Orange Revolution,” and Putin had sent his forces into Crimea.

The Lawsuit:

Solomon had previously requested these documents through a May 6, 2019 Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request. Because the State Department has failed to respond to this request, he has filed a lawsuit.

In 2018, while speaking to a group of foreign policy specialists, Joe Biden unwisely boasted that he had threatened to withhold $1 billion of U.S. loan guarantees to Ukraine (which would have put the country on the road to insolvency) if they did not fire Prosecutor General Viktor Shokin by the time he left the country. His plane was scheduled to depart in six hours.

Biden left out the fact that Shokin was investigating Burisma Holdings and was just about to question Hunter Biden about his dealings with the company.

Solomon first wrote about this story on April 1, 2019. Here is Joe Biden, in his own words, telling his audience what he’d said to Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko:

I said, ‘You’re not getting the billion.’ I’m going to be leaving here in, I think it was about six hours. I looked at them and said: ‘I’m leaving in six hours. If the prosecutor is not fired, you’re not getting the money.’

Well, son of a bitch, he got fired. And they put in place someone who was solid at the time.

Solomon prefaces his comments by saying that “every American deserves the right to be presumed innocent until evidence is made public or a conviction is secured, especially when some matters of a case involve foreigners. The same presumption should be afforded to Joe Biden, Hunter Biden, Devon Archer and Burisma in the Ukraine case.

That said, he demands answers to the following questions:

Was it appropriate for your son and his firm to cash in on Ukraine while you served as point man for Ukraine policy?

What work was performed for the money Hunter Biden’s firm received?

Did you know about the Burisma probe?

And when it was publicly announced that your son worked for Burisma, should you have recused yourself from leveraging a U.S. policy to pressure the prosecutor who very publicly pursued Burisma?

He also wants to find out what the State Department knew about Hunter Biden’s dealings in Ukraine and Ukraine’s investigations into those business dealings?

SLF’s executive director Todd Young said that, in his FOIA requests, Solomon simply seeks to answer those questions. Mr. Solomon’s questions, stemming from years-long investigative journalism, are powerful and legitimate inquiries into what the American public has a right to know about how and why Vice President Biden and the Obama administration conducted foreign policy in the last week of its tenure. The well-documented series of events involving Ukraine begs for public disclosure.”

Click here for lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.

I have written about Hunter Biden’s business dealings in Ukraine here and here. his business with China here, and the time he left his cocaine pipe and several other possessions in a rental car here.

Trump Says ‘We Will No Longer Deal With’ The British Ambassador; Disinvites Him From Dinner With Qatar’s Emir

In recently leaked diplomatic memos sent to the British Foreign Commonwealth Office, British Ambassador to the U.S. Sir Kim Darroch delivered some nasty blows to President Trump and his administration. He wrote, “As seen from here, we don’t really believe this administration is going to become substantially more normal; less dysfunctional; less unpredictable; less faction riven; less diplomatically clumsy and inept.” In fact, it’s a real possibility that “his career could end in disgrace.” I posted about this story here.

The President spoke to reporters briefly on Sunday and said, “You know, we’ve had our little ins and outs with a couple of countries and I would say that the Ambassador has not served the U.K. well. I can tell you that we’re not big fans of that man… I could say things about him, but I won’t bother.”

On Monday afternoon, Trump reacted to the insulting cables by tweet. He wrote:

I have been very critical about the way the U.K. and Prime Minister Theresa May handled Brexit. What a mess she and her representatives have created. I told her how it should be done, but she decided to go another way. I do not know the Ambassador, but he is not liked or well thought of within the U.S. We will no longer deal with him. The good news for the wonderful United Kingdom is that they will soon have a new Prime Minister. While I thoroughly enjoyed the magnificent State Visit last month, it was the Queen who I was most impressed with!

According to Bloomberg, an administration official reported that Sir Kim had been disinvited from a Monday evening dinner party at the home of U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin. The guests of honor will be President Trump and the emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani.

A U.K. government official issued a statement that was cordial, but very direct. It said:

We have made clear to the U.S. how unfortunate this leak is. The selective extracts leaked do not reflect the closeness of, and the esteem in which we hold, the relationship. At the same time we have also underlined the importance of ambassadors being able to provide honest, unvarnished assessments of the politics in their country. Sir Kim Darroch continues to have the Prime Minister’s full support.

The U.K. has a special and enduring relationship with the U.S. based on our long history and commitment to shared values and that will continue to be the case.

The lack of warmth in the statement may be related to Trump’s frequent criticism of Prime Minister Theresa May’s handling of Brexit. She will soon be stepping down and Boris Johnson has the best chance of succeeding her.

Moreover, the Brits were unhappy with Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal.

U.K. Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt told The Sun that it’s “possible the leak might be the result of a hack by a hostile government. Of course it would be massively concerning if it was the act of a foreign, hostile state. I’ve seen no evidence that that’s the case, but we’ll look at the leak inquiry very carefully.”

Trade minister Liam Fox said he “would offer an apology to Ivanka Trump during a meeting in Washington.”

The Washington Post’s Josh Dawsey tweeted, “Trump’s own team likes the ambassador and regularly dines and socializes at the embassy with him.”

Fierce Trump critic George Conway, husband of White House Counsel Kellyanne Conway, replied “Indeed they do. They never miss parties at the British Embassy. They love the ambassador, as does everyone else (except for a certain narcissist-in-chief). Frankly, the ambassador was being kind in his assessment of the narcissist-in-chief.”

No surprise there.

Finally, although this type of incident is rare, it is not without precedent. Fox News’ Gregg Re wrote:

British ambassdor Lionel Sackville-West was summarily sacked in 1888 for writing the so-called Murchison letter, which touched off a firestorm by indicating that Britain preferred Grover Cleveland over Republican Benjamin Harrison. (Republicans publicized the letter, helping Harrison win the White House.)

And in May 1856, President Franklin Pierce expelled John F. Crampton, then the British ambasador to the U.S., and several other British diplomats, following a lengthy spat over British efforts to recruit North Americans to fight in Crimea.

“It’s not entirely unprecedented,” Dan Drezner, Professor of International Politics at The Fletcher School of Tufts University, told Fox News. “When WikiLeaks released a trove of diplomatic cables, the Bolivarian leader of Ecuador expelled the U.S. Ambassador. Even in that case, however, the Ecuadoran government went through the proper diplomatic channels. A PNG-by-tweet for the leak of cables confirming mainstream media reporting of the Trump administration is definitely new.”

British Ambassador Who Called White House ‘Uniquely Dysfunctional’ Will Keep Job Amid Leaks Probe

The British Ambassador to the U.S. — whose leaked cables back to London called the Trump White House “uniquely dysfunctional” and “divided” while characterizing President Trump as “radiat[ing] insecurity” — will keep his position as ambassador while an investigation is conducted to determine how his communiques were leaked.

There were calls last night for Sir Kim [Darroche] to be recalled to London, as the Foreign Office called in senior civil servants to carry out a leak inquiry.

Police will be called in if any evidence of criminality emerges.

But Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt stood by popular Sir Kim, 65, who previously worked as the PM’s National Security Adviser.

Mr Hunt said he was “doing his job” as “frank opinions” from ambassadors are vital.

But in a bid to smooth over the Transatlantic rift, Mr Hunt added: “It’s also important to say this was a personal view. It’s not the view of the British government. It’s not my view.

“We continue to think that under President Trump the US administration is not just highly effective but the best possible friend of the United Kingdom on the international stage.”

There is already gossip and innuendo about who could have leaked Kim’s “diptels” with those seeking to fill his position named as likely culprits.

One senior Tory MP told The Sun: “Who would have gone to the trouble of saving up two years of diptels? I’m guessing an ambitious minister or their spad [special adviser]”.

Cabinet Secretary Sir Mark Sedwill is rumoured to be lined up to succeed Sir Kim, but the embarrassing leak could jeopardise that as Mr Trump may now prefer to deal with a visibly pro-US politician.

The leaks come on the heels of Trump’s visit to the UK, which many in the American press described as a trip to reestablish a healthy relationship with the UK as it had, of late, been on “shaky ground”.

If the British Ambassador was reflective of how others in the British government viewed the Trump administration, it’s not hard to figure out why the relationship needed repairing; but it does complicate an easy assessment of who could have wanted the information leaked.

In newly leaked diplomatic memos sent to the British Foreign Commonwealth Office, British Ambassador to the U.S. Sir Kim Darroch delivers some nasty blows to President Trump and his administration. He wrote, “As seen from here, we don’t really believe this administration is going to become substantially more normal; less dysfunctional; less unpredictable; less faction riven; less diplomatically clumsy and inept.” In fact, it’s a real possibility that “his career could end in disgrace.”

The memos were obtained by The Daily Mail and a UK official confirmed their authenticity to CNN.

The author wrote that this type of leak is “unprecedented” (I wonder about that) and worries that these “bombshell comments risk angering the notoriously thin-skinned President and undermining the UK’s ‘special relationship’ with America.”

According to  The Daily Mail, Sir Kim:

Writes that, “for a man who has risen to the highest office on the planet, President Trump radiates insecurity.”

Describes bitter conflicts within Trump’s White House – verified by his own sources – as “knife fights.”

Warns that Trump could have been indebted to “dodgy Russians.”

Claims the President’s economic policies could wreck the world trade system.

Says the scandal-hit Presidency could “crash and burn” and that “we could be at the beginning of a downward spiral… that leads to disgrace and downfall.”

Says Trump spends his days in the Oval Office asking his White House team, Cabinet members and senior Republicans for their opinions “on the business of the moment.”

Reports about “vicious infighting and chaos” in the White House — which Trump has dismissed as “fake news” — are “mostly true.”

The ambassador called Trump’s Iran policy “incoherent and chaotic” and said, “Its unlikely that US policy on Iran is going to become more coherent any time soon. This is a divided Administration.” He worries that “Trump could still attack Iran.”

On the President’s June 18th rally in Orlando, FL to kick-off his campaign for reelection, Sir Kim reported that Trump had “electrified an audience of 20,000 supporters” adding that “the audience was a sea of the now iconic red MAGA [Make American Great Again] caps. The crowd looked almost exclusively white, with a pretty even mix of men and women, young and old: there were families in every stand. For some, attending had meant a long wait in 30C heat and humidity.”

Sir Kim wrote that he “breathed a sigh of relief” when Trump and Melania boarded Air Force One. “Their State visit to the UK was finally over and, despite minor hiccups, it had been a resounding success.”

He described Trump’s meeting with Prince Charles as “cordial” and added that the two had “hit it off – surprisingly…I think the Prince of Wales, despite differing views on climate change, established an open and easy relationship with the President.”

Despite the negative tone of his remarks about Trump, he advised officials not to write him off. Although “mired in scandal most of his life, Trump could still emerge from the flames, battered but intact, like [Arnold] Schwarzenegger in the final scenes of The Terminator.”

The British FCO issued the following statement about the leaked documents:

The British public would expect our Ambassadors to provide Ministers with an honest, unvarnished assessment of the politics in their country.

Their views are not necessarily the views of Ministers or indeed the government. But we pay them to be candid. Just as the US Ambassador here will send back his reading of Westminster politics and personalities.

Of course we would expect such advice to be handled by Ministers and civil servants in the right way and it’s important that our Ambassadors can offer their advice and for it remain confidential. Our team in Washington have strong relations with the White House and no doubt that these will withstand such mischievous behavior.

Hollywood Avoids Tariff Retribution as China’s Box Office Begins to Lag

As studios held their breath waiting for some payback economic conditions have changed the game.

Many industries have been worried their products would bear the brunt of economic reprisals in the Mainland following Donald Trump’s tariffs program levied on Chinese products. While a legitimate concern one sector some may not immediately expect to be affected is the entertainment industry, but Hollywood studios have managed to sidestep the economic revenge — for now.

In China the movie industry takes on a deeply curious characteristic, one that is already gauzy and curious here in the US. The ChiCom government wields control over the movie industry not too dissimilar from the way OPEC influences the crude oil commodities markets. The ChiComs operate the theater chains, lord over the production studios, and approve of the content that is permitted onscreen inside theaters. They also keep a very tight reign on the involvement of Hollywood in its marketplace.

Each year only a few dozen Hollywood produced films are allowed into the Chinese film market. And of those permitted the authorities can, and frequently do dictate when particular content has to be removed. Hollywood has shown a willingness to censor its own product in order to gain entry into the lucrative Chinese market. To this extent the ChiComs have floated its explosive film industry as a signifier of the overall health of the nation.

That is why the news that 2019 has shown a significant struggle for the Chinese movie business becomes a source of many questions. At the halfway point of the year the Chinese box office is down a significant -2.6% over 2018 returns. A number of factors have been considered, but the reality is it could have been significantly worse — except for Hollywood. Movies originating from Burbank have seen a sharp increase of nearly 15% over last year. That means the domestically produced films — which the ChiComs deeply favor — have performed even worse than the initial metrics indicate.

The communist government officials keep a very tight clamp on Hollywood productions. While many foreign markets grant Hollywood in the range of 40%- 45% of the box office returns, in China the rate is only 25%. (Chinese co-productions with Hollywood
will see a title returning closer to 40% for US studios.) The government also manipulates the film release schedule to favor home-grown movies. The peak weekends on the calendar are usually denied to Hollywood titles, in order to ensure Chines movies dominate the box office figures.

But now the ChiComs are in a position where they may need to rely on Hollywood films to bail out a flagging marketplace. So far this year two of the top-5 films in China were US-produced — “Avengers: Endgame” ($614b US), and “Bumblebee” ($170b US). In years past when this type of market drop took place the ChiCom movie authorities have relaxed the hard quotas, allowing for more Hollywood titles than normal. Also this year they have encouraged far more non-US titles to be exhibited, with a stark increase of nearly 40% of non-Hollywood foreign films to be shown.

The irony in this is that in order for the flagship marketplace to appear vibrant the Chinese film authorities have had to flood its marketplace with outside content. In order for the Chinese film industry to appear vibrant they are relying on Hollywood, and foreign productions, to make it seem far more successful; the foreign imports used to boost the appearance of a strong local economy.

The unintended result here is that this reliance on Hollywood blockbusters to invigorate the Chinese film business means US studios may be avoiding economic punishment as a result of Donald Trump’s tariffs.

Iran and Donald Trump continue to spar (here).

On Tuesday — following both countries touting how they could destroy each other (here and here), the Middle Eastern nation’s president called our Commander-in-Chief “mentally retarded.”

Suddenly, this doesn’t sound super professional.

On the international playground, Kid Trump fired back with how strong he is — make a muscle.

And how rich:

“You may have some red parachute pants, but I’ve got four Swatches. And I play baseball in my Guess Jeans. “

KT called Kid Iran a bully:

And, said Trump, Iran best not be gettin’ him confused with any of the others they tried to push around before:

Although the President 86’d a strike that would’ve likely killed 150 in the aftermath of Iran’s destruction of a U.S. spy drone, Fox News has confirmed that the U.S. did launch a cyberattack last week:

“Fox News has confirmed that the U.S. military also carried out a cyberattack against Iran last Thursday even as the president nixed plans for airstrikes in response to the downing of an American drone. Sources said U.S. Cyber Command launched the cyberattack targeting the Iranian intelligence and radar installations used to down the U.S. Navy drone last week.”

And the battle — or, the argument in front of the monkey bars — rages on.

“A Disgrace”: Dan Crenshaw Provides a Reality Check for Mad Maxine After Her Wild Rant on Trump and Iran

As Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX) has shown since elected but especially in recent weeks, he is unafraid to take on the loudest, shrillest voices on the left, no matter the issue.

Last week, it was Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) on her “border detention centers=Nazi concentration camps” comparison, and Black Hat for disinviting Rep. Will Hurd (R-TX) from a tech conference over his pro-life views. Over the weekend, it was twice-failed Democratic candidate for president Hillary Clinton – who tried to blame the border crisis on Republicans.

Also over the weekend, the freshman Congressman took issue with comments from longtime Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA), who went on a wild Twitter rant regarding President Trump and possible war with Iran:

Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., drew fire from Rep. Dan Crenshaw, R-Texas, on Twitter for accusing President Trump of provoking a conflict with Iran.

The U.S. military’s Central Command released a video earlier this month showing Iranian forces removing an unexploded mine from one of the two ships that were attacked near the Strait of Hormuz. Iran has denied any involvement in the conflict.

Trump called off a military strike against Tehran after they shot down an American drone they claimed was in Iranian airspace. It was valued at over $100 million. Iran has since claimed they have the capability to continue shooting down American drones if necessary.

Waters said Trump didn’t deserve credit for showing restraint and questioned the nature of America’s surveillance of Iran.

In particular, Crenshaw took issue with this tweet from Waters:

In response, he blasted the Congresswoman:

Red State‘s Jennifer Van Laar documented Waters’s tweets last night and explained how her rant was wildly off the mark for a number of reasons, but commenting on an issue without the facts has never stopped Mad Maxine before.

Major Move: Mexico Deploys 15,000 Troops to the U.S. Border in Order to Stop Illegal Immigration

Westlake Legal Group dangerous-1282330_1280-620x413 Major Move: Mexico Deploys 15,000 Troops to the U.S. Border in Order to Stop Illegal Immigration Uncategorized Tariffs Politics nick valencia national guard Mexico luis sandoval International Affairs Illegal Immigration Guatemala Front Page Stories Featured Story donald trump democrats Border Wall Funding border security belize

On Monday, Mexican Secretary of Defense Luis Sandoval declared the deployment of 15,000 soldiers to the border in order to stave off the enormous amount of illegal immigration into the U.S.

CNN reporter Nick Valencia tweeted:

“Mexico has deployed almost 15,000 troops to the US-Mexico border to curve migration flow. An additional ~2,000 National Guard elements have also been deployed across the country’s southern border with Guatemala & Belize.: MX Secretary of Defense Luis Sandoval.”

As per CNN, the announcement was made in Cancun.

The 2,000 National Guard members serve to bolster the 4,500 troops already at the Central American border.

The news comes at the end of a long line of efforts by the Trump White House (here) to engage Mexico’s assistance in quelling America’s border crisis (here and here).

Of course, Trump hasn’t just been fighting our neighbors to the south in order to secure America; he’s been battling Democratic congresspeople elected by Americans to secure America in order to…secure…America (here).

As for Mexico, most recently, The Donald laid a 5% tariff on ’em:

But that was called off:

So what’s next? It remains to be seen. For now, presumably, the 15,000 soldiers will help reduce the influx of those coming into the U.S illegally. But there’s still certainly a whole lot more work to do and changes to make.

And the promised wall is yet to stand.

What are your thoughts on all this? Do you believe the deployment will help? Let us all know in the Comments section.
