Never-before-seen images offer chilling glimpse of devastating 1965 landslide

Newly-discovered photos are shedding new light on Canada’s largest known landslide.

The Hope Slide, as it became known, tore through the Nicolum Valley in the Cascade Mountain Range, British Columbia, on Jan. 9, 1965. Four motorists lost their lives in the disaster.

“We recently discovered a series of images documenting the incident itself, as well as search-and-rescue and reconstruction efforts following the slide,” said British Columbia’s Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, on its website. “As far as we know, only one or two of these images have ever been shown to the public before now.”

DECADES-OLD CAMERA REVEALS FORGOTTEN IMAGES OF MOUNT ST. HELENS ERUPTION

Officials explain that, on the day of the landslide, a snow avalanche had blocked the Hope-Princeton Highway in the Nicolum Valley, just outside the town of Hope. A queue of motorists had formed on the Princeton side of the avalanche, according to British Columbia’s Ministry of Transportation.

“At approximately 7 am, a devastating rock slide occurred at the same location, when half of Johnson Peak collapsed and descended into the valley below,” the Ministry said. “The slide filled the valley bottom with more than 47 million cubic meters of rock, mud, and debris – up to 500 ft deep in some locations.”

Such was the extent of the landslide that a lake at the foot of the slide was completely displaced. “The slide buried a car that had become stuck in the first slide, an oil tanker truck, and a loaded hay truck which had stopped behind the tanker,” officials added.

The slide destroyed almost two miles of BC Highway 3 and the road’s alignment was changed in the years following the landslide. In the decades since the disaster, the Hope Slide has also become covered in trees, hiding the “scar” caused by the landslide.

“Two of Maxar’s satellites collected new imagery today of the crash location of the Ukrainian passenger airplane near Khalaj Abad, Iran,” Maxar said, in a statement emailed to Fox News. “The images were collected first by our WorldView-2 satellite (at approximately 10:34 AM, local) and then again by our WorldView-1 satellite (at approximately 1:47PM local). In the imagery, and particularly the color infrared view of the crash site, a lengthy debris field and burned area can be seen. Search/recovery and accident investigation-associated vehicles can be seen nearby.”

The crash came just a few hours after Iran launched a ballistic missile attack against Iraqi military bases housing U.S. troops amid a confrontation with Washington over the U.S. drone strike that killed an Iranian Revolutionary Guard general last week.

16th-century shipwreck uncovered in the center of Stockholm

A shipwreck dating back to the 16th century has been discovered beneath the city of Stockholm.

Experts uncovered the ship in the Kundstradgarden district in the center of the Swedish capital last summer, according to a recent statement from archaeological consultancy Arkeologikonsult.

Analysis of the ship’s timbers indicates that it dates back to the 1590s. The ship, which is over 98.4 feet long, once sailed on Stockholm’s former waterways that were later filled to accommodate the city’s expansion.

17TH-CENTURY WARSHIP WRECKS DISCOVERED OFF SWEDISH ISLAND

“The ship was probably abandoned and left on the shore at the beginning of the 17th century and then covered with garbage from residents in the area,” said Arkeologikonsult, in its statement.

“We have found everything from coins and pipes to ceramics and glass but also a small ball of clay in clay, possibly dropped by a child who played in the wreck during the early 1600s,” explained archaeologist Philip Tonemar, in the statement.

Experts from Sweden’s Vrak Museum of Wrecks were brought in to help identify the shipwreck. The vessel is believed to be the cargo ship Samson, which was commissioned by Duke Karl in 1598. The pine ship disappeared from archives in 1607, according to Arkeologikonsult.

Other Swedish shipwrecks have been garnering attention recently. The wrecks of two large 17th-century warships, for example, were discovered off a Swedish island, one of which may be linked to a famous doomed ship from that era.

Top UFO stories of 2019

Westlake Legal Group 694940094001_6087230850001_6087228353001-vs Top UFO stories of 2019 James Rogers fox-news/science/area-51 fox-news/science/air-and-space/ufos fox news fnc/science fnc dd37633f-1698-5059-ba1d-c50577232afe Chris Ciaccia article

2019 was a big year for UFO coverage, ranging from the U.S. Navy acknowledging for the first time that leaked videos were real to former and current politicians weighing in on what the military knows, and a wave of people attempting to “storm Area 51.”

No one can say for certain whether life exists outside of this planet, but the public’s interest levels in the subject have likely never been higher.

FIRST QUARTER

January saw the release of newly declassified documents from the Pentagon that revealed the Department of Defense funded projects that investigated UFOs, wormholes, alternate dimensions and a host of other subjects that are often the topics of conspiracy theorists.

The Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) released 38 research titles on Jan. 18, following a Freedom of Information Act request from Steven Aftergood, director of the Federation of American Scientists’ Project on Government Secrecy. The research was funded by the Department of Defense under its Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program (AATIP).

MAN WHO EXPOSED ‘AREA 51 UFO TESTS’ CLAIMS US GOVERNMENT STILL MONITORS HIM 30 YEARS LATER

The existence of AATIP was initially described by The New York Times and Politico in 2017. It was subsequently reported by Fox News and a number of other news outlets that the Pentagon had secretly set up a program to investigate UFOs at the request of former Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev.

A Pentagon spokesman said the UFO program ended in 2012, though The New York Times said the Defense Department still investigates potential episodes of unidentified flying objects.

SECOND QUARTER

Several months later, the U.S. Navy announced it was drafting new guidelines for pilots and other employees to report encounters with “unidentified aircraft.”

“There have been a number of reports of unauthorized and/or unidentified aircraft entering various military-controlled ranges and designated air space in recent years,” the Navy said in an April statement to Politico, which first reported the move.

“For safety and security concerns, the Navy and the [U.S. Air Force] takes these reports very seriously and investigates each and every report.”

“As part of this effort,” it told Politico, “the Navy is updating and formalizing the process by which reports of any such suspected incursions can be made to the cognizant authorities. A new message to the fleet that will detail the steps for reporting is in draft.”

The Navy also said it’s taking a more proactive approach in briefing lawmakers, including several senators who were briefed in June.

One month later, the Pentagon admitted that it was still investigating UFOs as part of the AATIP.

“The Department of Defense is always concerned about maintaining positive identification of all aircraft in our operating environment, as well as identifying any foreign capability that may be a threat to the homeland,” spokesman Christopher Sherwood told the New York Post in May. “The department will continue to investigate, through normal procedures, reports of unidentified aircraft encountered by US military aviators in order to ensure defense of the homeland and protection against strategic surprise by our nation’s adversaries.”

Former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Intelligence Christopher Mellon told Fox & Friends in May the Navy has a right to be concerned about the unexplained sightings.

“We know that UFOs exist. This is no longer an issue,” said Mellon, who has written on the topic and is associated with the History Channel series, ‘Unidentified,’ at the time. “The issue is why are they here? Where are they coming from and what is the technology behind these devices that we are observing?”

There are indications, Mellon said, that the objects reported by Navy pilots in 2014 and 2015 and mentioned in the New York Times report were doing things that aren’t possible in this physical realm.

ALIENS? HARVARD PROFESSOR DEFENDS CLAIM MYSTERIOUS INTERSTELLAR OBJECT COULD BE EXTRATERRESTRIAL PROBE

The speeds that were reported (about 5,000 miles per hour, according to Mellon) were only sustainable for about an hour by an aircraft in the air, and these objects would be flying around all day long, the pilots said.

“Pilots observing these craft are absolutely mystified and that comes through clearly in their public statements,” Mellon continued.

In June 2019, Reid, now retired, expressed his desire for lawmakers to hold public hearings into what the military knows.

“They would be surprised how the American public would accept it,” he said during a wide-ranging interview with a Nevada radio station. “People from their individual states would accept it.”

THIRD QUARTER

What started as an internet joke in July to “see them aliens,”  turned into the headline-grabbing “Storm Area 51” event in September.

Although more than 2 million people signed up on Facebook saying they would attend the viral phenomenon event, a motley group of about 100 “alien-chasers” converged on the back gate of the secret site early Sept. 20, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Only a few people were arrested, Fox News previously reported.

People came from all over the U.S. to attend the viral event, which generated security concerns and garnered global attention.

“We figure Mars needs women, so we’re here if they want to beam us up,” one woman told Fox News in September.

FORMER US DEFENSE OFFICIAL: WE KNOW UFOS ARE REAL – HERE’S WHY THAT’S CONCERNING

FOURTH QUARTER

Americans said in a September Gallup poll they are becoming increasingly skeptical that the government knows more than it is letting on as it pertains to UFOs and an ex-punk rocker may be the one who opens the proverbial pandora’s box.

A spokesperson for To the Stars Academy of Arts & Sciences (TTSA), co-founded by former Blink-182 singer Tom DeLonge, told The New York Times in September that it “certainly” had obtained “exotic material samples from UFOs,” but no further details were given at the time.

Later that month, the U.S. Navy acknowledged that three UFO videos that were released by former Blink-182 singer Tom DeLonge and published by The New York Times are of real “unidentified” objects.

“The Navy considers the phenomena contained/depicted in those three videos as unidentified,” Navy spokesman Joseph Gradisher told The Black Vault, a website dedicated to declassified government documents.

BLINK-182 FOUNDER’S UFO HUNTING GROUP CLINCHES DEAL WITH ARMY TO STUDY ‘EXOTIC MATERIAL’

Gradisher added that “the ‘Unidentified Aerial Phenomena’ terminology is used because it provides the basic descriptor for the sightings/observations of unauthorized/unidentified aircraft/objects that have been observed entering/operating in the airspace of various military-controlled training ranges.”

The videos in question, known as “FLIR1,” “Gimbal” and “GoFast,” were originally released to the New York Times and to the TTSA.

The first video of the unidentified object was taken on Nov. 14, 2004, and shot by an F-18’s gun camera. The second video was taken on Jan. 21, 2015, and shows another aerial vehicle with pilots commenting on how strange it is. The third video was also taken on Jan. 21, 2015, but it is unclear whether the third video was of the same object or a different one.

In October, the TTSA  signed a deal with the U.S. Army to study its purported extraterrestrial “discoveries.”

November saw the publication of an explosive report that detailed the involvement of two “unknown individuals” who told several Naval officers who witnessed the 2004 event, known as the USS Nimitz UFO incident, to delete evidence.

Earlier this month, Chris Rutkowski, a Canadian science writer and ufologist, donated his collection of more than 20,000 UFO reports filed over the past three decades, plus another 10,000 UFO-related documents from the Canadian government, including the so-called Falcon Lake incident, which Rutkowski said “beats even Roswell.”

1,700-year-old Christian basilica discovered in Ethiopia

Archaeologists have uncovered the remains of a 1,700-year-old Christian basilica in Ethiopia.

The basilica, from the 4th century A.D., was found in Beta Samati, an ancient town that was once part of the Aksumite civilization.

The remains of the church date back to the time when Christianity became the official religion of the Aksumite empire.

NILE MILLIONS OF YEARS OLDER THAN PREVIOUSLY THOUGHT, STUDY SAYS

“Early basilicas in Ethiopia were key places of Christian worship, and the site at Beta Samati appears to be one of the first in the Aksumite kingdom — built shortly after King Ezana converted the empire to Christianity during the mid-fourth century AD,” researchers explain in a statement emailed to Fox News.

Secular and religious artifacts were discovered in and around the basilica, including animal figurines, crosses, stamp seals, and tokens that were likely used for trade and administration. Commercial and domestic buildings were also found at Beta Samati. A gold ring, which shows Roman influences, was also found in the basilica.

A paper on the research project has been published in the journal Antiquity.

“The Empire of Aksum was one of the world’s most influential ancient civilisations, but it remains one of the least widely known,” said Michael Harrower, associate professor of archaeology at Johns Hopkins University and lead author of the research, in the statement. “The excavations of Beta Samati help fill important gaps in our understanding of ancient Pre-Aksumite and Aksumite civilisations.”

Beta Samati means “house of audience” in the local language, which could point to its role as an important ancient administrative hub.

The town was first occupied by the civilization known as pre-Aksumite around 750 B.C. and abandoned almost 1,000 years later, around 650 A.D. The ancient town was discovered in 2009.

Thousands of ‘penis fish’ wash up on Northern California beach

Thousands of fat innkeeper worms, known as “penis fish,” have washed up on a beach in Northern California.

An image of the worms was posted on Instagram by Bay Nature magazine on Dec. 6.

“Thousands of these marine worms—called fat innkeeper worms, or ‘penis fish’—were found on Drake’s Beach last week!” said the magazine. “These phallic organisms are quite common along the West coast of North America, but they spend their whole lives in U-shaped burrows under the sand, so few beachgoers are aware of their existence.”

In an article, Bay Nature magazine explained that the pulsating 10-inch worms may have been washed up by a strong storm that disrupted sediments in the intertidal zone.

Innkeeper worms, or Urechis unicinctus, are also found in the Elkhorn Slough nature reserve on Monterey Bay, California.

It lives in a ‘U-shaped’ tunnel or burrow and has a unique method of eating. It secretes a slime net, which serves to trap small food particles,” explains NOAA. “The worm circulates water through the tunnel, trapping food in the slime net. When the mucus net becomes loaded with food, the entire net, with its burden of food, is swallowed by the worm.”

The worms can reach up to 19 inches long, but are usually six to nine inches long, according to NOAA.

NASA picks site on asteroid Bennu where it will grab space rock sample

‘X’ marks the spot as NASA prepares for a historic asteroid mission.

NASA has selected the site on asteroid Bennu where its OSIRIS-REx spacecraft will retrieve a sample of space rock.

Scientists identified four potential sites before picking a spot dubbed “Nightingale” that is located in Bennu’s northern hemisphere.

ASTEROID BENNU IS SHOOTING OUT ROCKS – AND NASA ISN’T SURE WHY

“After thoroughly evaluating all four candidate sites, we made our final decision based on which site has the greatest amount of fine-grained material and how easily the spacecraft can access that material while keeping the spacecraft safe,” said Dante Lauretta, OSIRIS-REx principal investigator at the University of Arizona in Tucson, in a statement. “Of the four candidates, site Nightingale best meets these criteria and, ultimately, best ensures mission success.”

Discovery of mini weapons shows how ancient Native American children learned survival skills

The discovery of child-sized weapons at a site in Oregon is shedding new light on ancient Native American childhood.

A new analysis of items recovered from the Par-Tee archaeological site at the mouth of the Columbia River revealed fragments of a number of atlatls; throwing tools that increased the velocity of darts.

“Until the invention of the bow and arrow, these ancient dart-throwing weapons were the pinnacle of projectile weaponry and their proper use was key to survival,” the researchers said in a statement emailed to Fox News.

Because the atlatls found at Par-Tee varied greatly in size, archaeologists concluded that many of them were designed to be used by children.

“Basically, they scaled-down their atlatls so they were more easily usable is small hands,” said lead author Robert Losey, associate professor of anthropology at the University of Alberta and lead author of a study on the weapons, in the statement. “This helped children master the use of these weapons.”

In another project, archaeologists discovered incredible evidence of a huge Wichita Indian town in Kansas that was once home to 20,000 people. In a separate project, archaeologists discovered an “unprecedented” 7,000-year-old Native American burial site beneath the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Florida.

The ancient people of North America started building mounds as early as 4,500 B.C., experts say.

Mysterious ancient Egyptian ‘head cones’ discovered

Researchers have revealed details of mysterious cone-shaped headgear discovered at the ancient Egyptian city of Amarna.

“Ancient Egyptian art frequently depicted people wearing cone-shaped headgear, but none had ever been found,” the researchers explained in a statement emailed to Fox News.

Archaeologists from the Amarna project have been working with Egypt’s Ministry of Antiquities to analyze the mysterious head cones. A head cone was discovered at a grave in Amarna in 2010 and another head cone was uncovered at the site five years later.

“This confirms the objects actually existed, which some researchers were skeptical of,” the researchers added in the statement. “Instead, they thought they were just artistic additions, like Christian halos.”

A LION MUMMY MAY HAVE BEEN DISCOVERED AT FAMED PYRAMID SITE

“It is unknown why these cones were included in the burials,” the experts continued. “They may have been thought to purify the wearer so they could engage with the rituals and deities of the afterlife. Alternatively, they could be connected with ideas of fertility and resurrection.”

Archaeologists recently uncovered an ancient cemetery near the famous Giza pyramids just outside Cairo.

In another project, experts uncovered the 2,500-year-old remains of a powerful high priest in dramatic fashion.

The opening of the priest’s stone sarcophagus was broadcast by the Discovery Channel during “Expedition Unknown: Egypt Live,” a two-hour live event. Archaeologists discovered what they describe as an “exquisitely preserved” mummy inside the sealed sarcophagus, covered in gold banding.

The incredible find was made at Al-Ghorifa, a remote site about 165 miles south of Cairo. Located within the inner chambers of the burial site, experts accessed the sarcophagus via a network of ancient tunnels.

Elsewhere, archaeologists found a large ram-headed sphinx that is linked to King Tutankhamun’s grandfather. In other projects, a teenage girl’s skeleton was discovered in a mysterious grave near the Meidum pyramid, south of Cairo.

In April, experts announced the discovery of dozens of mummies in ancient desert burial chambers. Archaeologists also recently explained the strange brown spots on some of the paintings in King Tutankhamun’s tomb.

In January, archaeologists announced the discovery of ancient tombs in the Nile Delta north of Cairo. In a separate project, two ancient tombs dating back to the Roman period were uncovered in Egypt’s Western Desert.

Archaeologists discovered a stunning sphinx statue at an ancient temple in southern Egypt in a separate project.

Last summer, experts unlocked the secrets of a mysterious ancient ‘cursed’ black granite sarcophagus. The massive coffin, which was excavated in the city of Alexandria, was found to contain three skeletons and gold sheets with the remains.

Archaeologists also found the oldest solid cheese in the tomb of Ptahmes, mayor of the ancient city of Memphis.

A mummy buried in southern Egypt more than 5,000 years ago has also revealed its grisly secrets, shedding new light on prehistoric embalming practices.

‘Nuclear battlefield’ revealed as scientists map Bikini Atoll test craters and sunken warships

For the first time, scientists have conducted extensive mapping of the seafloor at Bikini Atoll, the remote Pacific Ocean testing site for atomic bombs between 1946 and 1954.

The research was revealed Monday at the Fall Meeting of the American Geophysical Union in San Francisco.

“The bomb testing sunk ships and created large craters on the seafloor,” explained researchers from the University of Delaware in an abstract of their research. “New discoveries include subtle bedforms visible on the seabed from the Baker bomb test, a 21 kiloton detonation, providing new insights into the forces that shaped the seabed from the blast.”

The study, authored by Arthur Trembanis, Ph.D., an associate professor at the University of Delaware and doctoral student Carter DuVal, describes the site as “the world’s first simulated nuclear battlefield.”

DOOMSDAY WARNING: IT WOULD ONLY TAKE 100 NUCLEAR WEAPONS TO WREAK GLOBAL DEVASTATION

Conducted in 1946 as part of Operation Crossroads, the Baker test produced a giant mushroom cloud that was captured in iconic photographs. The test’s devastating impact on the seabed was clearly revealed in the mapping project. The Baker test crater is about 8 meters (26.2 feet) deep with a diameter of around 700 meters or 2,297 feet.

“The Baker crater is flat floored, evidence of back filling as the ejecta settled in after the explosion,” the researchers explain. “A new discovery is that there are subtle but coherent bedform features visible on the seabed that radiate away from the center of the impact crater.”

Experts, however, were unable to find any seabed evidence of the Able test, a 21-kiloton aerial explosion that was also conducted in 1946 as part of Operation Crossroads. But they did find evidence of the 1954 Castle Bravo test, a 15-megaton hydrogen fusion bomb test that obliterated three islands.

WORSE THAN CHERNOBYL: PARTS OF MARSHALL ISLANDS HAVE RADIATION ‘HIGHER’ THAN CATASTROPHIC ’86 DISASTER, STUDIES SAY

The flat-bottomed Castle Bravo crater is 25 to 30m (82 to 98.4 feet) deep and has a diameter of 1,400m (4,593 feet).

A dozen shipwrecks were also revealed in the mapping project.

In separate research, scientists have revealed that radiation levels in parts of the Marshalls Islands, where the tests took place, have higher radiation levels than the 1986 Chernobyl disaster.
