Mysterious double Viking boat burial discovered

A mysterious double Viking boat burial has been discovered in Norway, intriguing experts.

Last month archaeologists excavating a site at Vinjeroa in central Norway uncovered the boat grave of a woman who died in the second half of the 9th century. Shell-shaped gilded bronze brooches and a crucifix-shaped brooch fashioned from an Irish harness fitting were found in the grave, along with a pearl necklace, two pairs of scissors, part of a spindle and a cow’s skull, according to the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).

Archaeologists, however, were surprised to find that, instead of digging a new grave for the woman, she and her boat were placed inside a larger boat grave from 100 years earlier. The larger boat, which measures between 29.5 feet and 32.8 feet long, contains the remains of a man who was buried with his weapons.

‘SENSATIONAL’ VIKING BOAT GRAVES DISCOVERED

While most of the wood from the boats has rotted away, their rivets were still in position, so archaeologists were able to identify the double boat burial. The man had been buried with a spear, a shield and a shingle-edged sword.

Speaking to Norwegian SciTech News, Raymond Sauvage, an archaeologist at the NTNU University Museum in Trondheim, who led the excavation, explained that the sword clearly dates the grave to the 8th century. “That’s assuming that we are not dealing with a Viking hipster,” he quipped.

The burials were made in an area that was home to Viking-era farms. While the soil conditions are not ideal for preserving bones, archaeologists have recovered part of the woman’s skull, which will be used for DNA analysis and may give an indication of what she looked like.

Sauvage told Norwegian SciTech News that the man and the woman were likely related. “It’s reasonable to think that the two were buried together to mark the family’s ownership to the farm, in a society that for the most part didn’t write things down,” he added.

ALTAR OF VIKING SAINT-KING DISCOVERED IN NORWAY

Doctoral student Aina Heen Pettersen of NTNU’s Department of Historical Studies told Norwegian SciTech News that the crucifix-shaped brooch, originally part of a harness fitting from Ireland, is also significant. “Using artifacts from Viking raids as jewelry signaled a clear difference between you and the rest of the community, because you were part of the group that took part in the voyages,” she said.

Viking-era discoveries have thrilled archaeologists across the Nordic countries, the Baltic and Scotland in recent years. A Swedish grave containing the skeleton of a Viking warrior, long thought to be male, was recently confirmed as female.

Last year, a Viking “Thor’s hammer” was discovered in Iceland and archaeologists in Norway used ground-penetrating radar technology to reveal an extremely rare Viking longship.

Also in 2018, an 8-year-old girl discovered a 1,500-year-old sword in a Swedish lake and an incredible trove of silver treasure linked to the era of a famous Viking king was discovered on an island in the Baltic Sea. Hundreds of 1,000-year-old silver coins, rings, pearls, and bracelets were found on the German island of Ruegen.

Two Viking boat graves were recently uncovered in Sweden in what archaeologists described as a “sensational” discovery.

In 2017, an incredibly well-preserved Viking sword was found by a reindeer hunter on a remote mountain in Southern Norway. In 2016, archaeologists in Trondheim, Norway, unearthed the church where Viking King Olaf Haraldsson was first enshrined as a saint.

VIKING ‘THOR’S HAMMER’ DISCOVERED IN ICELAND

Separately in 2016, a tiny Viking crucifix was found in Denmark. The wreck of a 12th-century ‘Viking-style’ ship discovered in a German port is also revealing its secrets thanks to high-tech 3D-scanning technology.

A 900-year-old Viking chess piece that was bought for less than $10 in the 1960s was recently sold at auction for $924,000.

The extremely rare chess piece was bought for 5 U.K. pounds ($6.30) in 1964 by an antique dealer in Edinburgh, Scotland, and then passed down through this family. For years, the Chessman was kept in a drawer at the home of the antiques dealer’s daughter.

Experts are also unlocking the secrets of a mysterious Viking treasure trove that was discovered in Scotland. The “Galloway Hoard” was found by a man using a metal detector in 2014. It was acquired by National Museums Scotland in 2017, which describes the trove as “the richest collection of rare and unique Viking-age objects ever found in Britain or Ireland.”

Civil War log cabin discovered during house demolition

A house that was being torn down in Prescott, Ark., has revealed an incredible secret that may date back centuries.

A log cabin, thought to date to the Civil War era or even earlier, was found inside the house, according to the Nevada County Depot and Museum. The cabin may even have witnessed a Civil War battle.

“The footprint of the log cabin is 18′ X 20′,” the museum explained in a Facebook post. “The cabin had been added onto and the exterior encapsulated with siding.”

COUPLE DISCOVER 19TH-CENTURY LOG CABIN DURING HOME RENOVATION

The cabin was moved to its location on Greenlawn Street in Prescott around 1953 to 1955 and was once located on Miller Hill, according to the museum. After researching land patents, experts found that the cabin was once on land owned by a man named John Vaughn, which would date it to the period between 1850 and 1860.

The records indicate that it may have been located near the site of the Battle of Prairie D’Ane, which took place in 1864. The engagement resulted in a victory for Union forces and the battlefield is now part of the Camden Expedition Sites National Historic Landmark.

“It is made of hand-hewn timbers and predates the coming of the railroad in the 1870’s, which brought sawn lumber,” the museum said in the post. “There is a great possibility that the house is likely a civil wartime structure, if not antebellum. If all of this is proven true, then this log cabin could very well have stood on the edge of the Prairie D’Ane during the battle.”

CIVIL WAR CANNONBALL DISCOVERED LODGED IN A TREE AT HISTORIC MISSOURI HOUSE

The museum also explained that thanks to a donation from a local benefactor, it has purchased the cabin and plans to dismantle it, store it, and at some point, reassemble it on the Prairie D’Ane battlefield.

“What a great find of Prescott history!” it wrote on Facebook.

Other historic log cabins have been discovered in recent years. In 2017, a couple renovating their new home in Dublin, Ohio. found a perfectly-preserved 19th-century log cabin within the structure.

Incredible artifacts from the Civil War have also been uncovered in unlikely places. A Civil War cannonball was recently discovered lodged in a walnut tree at a historic house in Independence, Mo.

A lion mummy may have been discovered at famed pyramid site

Archaeologists in Egypt have found a large animal mummy that may contain the remains of a lion or lioness.

Egypt’s Ministry of Antiquities said on Monday the mummy was excavated in Saqqara, a town south of Cairo that was a vast necropolis in antiquity and is home to the famed Step Pyramid.

Archeologists frequently find mummified cats, but the recovery of a lion is rare. In 2004, the first lion skeleton was found, revealing the sacred status of the animal during ancient times.

20 ANCIENT WOODEN COFFINS DISCOVERED IN EGYPTIAN NECROPOLIS

Egypt’s Antiquities Minister Khaled Al-Anani visited the site on Thursday, according to a Facebook post by the country’s Ministry of Antiquities. The remains of a number of cats were found at the site, some of which were large, officials said.

Earlier this year, archaeologists also uncovered an ancient cemetery near the famous Giza pyramids just outside Cairo.

Last year, Egypt’s Antiquities Ministry announced the discovery of an ancient necropolis near the Nile Valley city of Minya, south of Cairo. The large cemetery is located north of Tuna al-Gabal area, a vast archaeological site on the edge of the western desert. It includes several burial shafts and hosts more than 1,000 statues and some 40 sarcophagi as well as other artifacts.

Hitler’s vegetable garden discovered at his secret headquarters

A garden that once provided Adolf Hitler with fresh vegetables has been discovered at his infamous Wolf’s Lair headquarters.

Hitler spent much of his time in the final years of the war at the Wolf’s Lair, which is located in what is now Poland. The top-secret, heavily guarded bunker complex was used by the Nazis until January 1945, when it was abandoned and partly destroyed ahead of advancing Soviet forces.

The garden was found on the grounds of Mazurolandia, a nearby theme park museum, and excavations took place during the summer.

“We discovered Hitler’s Garden in the 4th Zone of the Wolf’s Lair,” said Mazurolandia, in a translated statement, adding that experts from the Mazurian Military Museum were brought in to investigate the site.

HITLER’S SECRET NAZI WAR MACHINE REVEALED IN HIDDEN BASES

The First News reports that the garden was found 2,953 feet from Hitler’s bunker. An excavation uncovered the foundations of the gardener’s house, two greenhouses and an underground boiler room that provided water and warm air to grow fresh produce all year round. Wartime ceramics, porcelain and glassware were also found.

A vegetarian, teetotaler and non-smoker, Hitler enjoyed plenty of green produce at the Wolf’s Lair. Paranoid about being poisoned, the Nazi leader also ensured that a number of food tasters worked at the Wolf’s Lair to sample his meals.

“The food was delicious, only the best vegetables, asparagus, bell peppers, everything you can imagine. And always with a side of rice or pasta,” Margot Woelk, one of the food tasters, told the Associated Press in 2013.

HUNDREDS OF CHILLING ITEMS DISCOVERED AT NAZI MASSACRE SITES

Woelk, then in her mid-twenties, spent 2 1/2 years as one of 15 young women who sampled Hitler’s food at the Wolf’s Lair.

The Wolf’s Lair was also the scene of an unsuccessful attempt to assassinate the evil German leader on July 20, 1944, when trusted colonel Claus von Stauffenberg detonated a bomb in a conference room at the headquarters. Hitler survived, but nearly 5,000 people were executed following the assassination attempt, including von Stauffenberg.

In 2017, a painted red telephone that belonged to Hitler and was used at the Wolf’s Lair — sold at an auction for $243,000.  The phone was described by Alexander Historical Auctions in Chesapeake City, Md. as “arguably the most destructive ‘weapon’ of all time.”

HITLER’S RED PHONE, A POWERFUL WARTIME ‘WEAPON,’ SELLS FOR $243,000

The phone was “used in vehicles, trains, his field headquarters, at the Wolf’s Lair…and in the last desperate days deep beneath Berlin,” according to the auction house.

Experts are also looking to unlock the sinister secrets of hidden Nazi bases dotted across Europe. Other sites include the vast base of Dag Bromberg, which, like the Wolf’s Lair,  is hidden in a Polish forest, and the V-2 rocket base Kraftwerk Nord West in France.

A lost cemetery may be on the campus of a Florida high school, say experts and officials, sparking a high-tech search of the school’s grounds.

Researchers have been using a ground-penetrating radar to hunt for the cemetery on the campus of King High School in Tampa. “On Thursday, October 17th, it was brought to the district’s attention that a possible unmarked cemetery for indigent citizens may be on the campus of King High School,” said Hillsborough County Public Schools, in a statement released Oct. 24.

The Tampa Bay Times reports that 250 people are buried at the lost Ridgewood cemetery. Almost all of the people interred at the cemetery are African-American, according to Fox 13.

“It hurts, we have been through a lot in this city, we are a part of this city — where is our history?” Hillsborough County NAACP President Yvette Lewis told Fox 13. Lewis is also a member of the historical response committee formed by Hillsborough County Public Schools to handle the lost cemetery.

The school district notes that there is conflicting information on the cemetery’s possible location based on appraisals, deeds, aerial maps and historical and county records.

“It is a high priority of our district to make sure we find this cemetery, while respecting the people who may be buried there, as well as their families,” the school district said, explaining that it has brought in geophysical exploration specialist GeoView to map and scan the areas where the cemetery may be located.

The company began its work on Oct. 23. “If no signs of a cemetery are found during this initial scan, the radar scanning will move to the northeast corner of the King High School property where another document says the cemetery may be located.”

In a YouTube video posted by Hillsborough County Public Schools, GeoView President Paul Wightman explained that the radar scanning will be used to create a tridimensional representation of the area’s subsurface.

“Typically, for cemeteries with Christian burial, the remains are interred on an east to west orientation and so we get our best response when we go across the short axis of those buried remains,” he added. “By going north and south we’re going to be able to go across the short axis of it, and that’s going give us our cleanest response in terms of whether there’s something actually present or not.”

A spokesperson for Hillsborough County Public Schools told Fox News that results from the scanning are expected in one to two weeks. “We still have a crew doing the Ground Penetrating Radar at the school site,” she said.

Three “lost cemeteries” have been discovered in the Tampa area in the last year, according to the Tampa Bay Times.

NASA announces new VIPER Moon rover that will explore the lunar surface

NASA has unveiled its plan to send a new lunar rover, VIPER, to the surface of the Moon.

“VIPER is going to rove on the South Pole of the moon and assess where the water ice is,” said NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine during a wide-ranging speech at the International Astronautical Congress in Washington D.C. on Friday.

The government space agency notes that the Moon has vast reservoirs of water ice, an amount that could potentially reach millions of tons. The water will be used to sustain a human presence on the lunar surface.

“Water ice is oxygen to breathe, it’s water to drink,” Bridenstine said, adding that hydrogen in the water ice could also be used for rocket fuel. “We’re going to utilize the resources of the Moon to live and work for long periods of time.”

NASA plans to land VIPER, which stands for Volatiles Investigating Polar Exploration Rover, on the Moon in December 2022. When it reaches the lunar surface, the golf-cart sized rover will collect about 100 days of data, roaming several miles. VIPER’s instruments, including a 1-meter (3.28 foot) drill, will be used to perform soil samples.

The lander and launch vehicle that will deliver the mobile robot to the Moon will be provided through NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) contract to deliver science and technology payloads to and near the Moon, the space agency said, in a statement.

Initial mission capability for 2024 involves landing two astronauts on the Moon’s south pole. Astronauts will live and work out of the lander for six-and-a-half days, according to the agency.

NASA REVEALS ITS VISION FOR THE ARTEMIS MOON LANDER THAT WILL RETURN US ASTRONAUTS TO THE LUNAR SURFACE

Speaking at IAC, Bridenstine also raised the possibility that the next two astronauts to reach the moon could both be female. “That’s an important point to make,” he added.

NASA recently released a “woman on the Moon” illustration for the Artemis mission. “Artemis, the twin sister of Apollo and Goddess of the Moon and the hunt, encompasses all of our present efforts to return humans to the Moon — to prepare us and propel us on to Mars,” the space agency explains on its website. “The portrait of the Greek Goddess, Artemis is illustrated in the highlights and shadows of the crescent Moon topography. Her features are abstract enough that any woman can see themselves in her.”

Earlier this year, NASA released details of its vision for the Artemis Moon lander that will return U.S. astronauts to the lunar surface.

ON APOLLO 11 ANNIVERSARY, PENCE ANNOUNCES THAT ORION CAPSULE FOR MANNED MOON MISSIONS IS READY FOR DEBUT FLIGHT

In July, NASA said it was seeking “proposals from industry for the development of integrated human lunar landers and execution of crewed flight demonstrations to the lunar surface by 2024,” according to a notice posted to the Federal Business Opportunities website.

Speaking at Kennedy Space Center on the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon landing on July 20, Vice President Mike Pence also announced that the Orion capsule that will take American astronauts back to the Moon is ready.

In documents posted on the FBO website, NASA explained that astronauts will be flown in an Orion spacecraft to the ‘Gateway,’ a space station orbiting the Moon. The Gateway vessel will be used to support the transfer of crew and supplies into the Moon Lander.

Ancient Antikythera shipwreck reveals more of its secrets

Marine archaeologists have revealed the latest discoveries from the site of the Antikythera shipwreck, famous for the “Antikythera Mechanism,” which has been described as an ancient computer.

The mechanism’s fragments were raised in 1901 from the mid-1st century B.C. shipwreck off the southern Greek island of Antikythera.

In a statement, Greece’s Ministry of Culture and Sports said that marine archaeologists returned to the shipwreck this month, more than two years after the last survey of the site in September 2017.

27 Maya ritual sites discovered on online map by eagle-eyed archaeologist

An eagle-eyed archaeologist has used a freely available online map to locate 27  Maya ceremonial sites in Mexico.

Takeshi Inomata, a professor of archaeology at the University of Arizona, made the discovery using a LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) map he found online last year, according to the New York Times. LiDAR technology harnesses a laser to measure distances to the Earth’s surface and can prove extremely valuable to study what is hidden in areas with thick vegetation.

The 2011 map, which covers 4,400 square miles of the Mexican states of Tabasco and Chiapas, was published by Mexico’s National Institute of Statistics and Geography, the Times reported.

Inomata told Fox News that the discovery followed his research at the site of Ceibal in Guatemala, where a ceremonial complex dating back to 1000 to 900 B.C. was found. “We then went to this area (Tabasco) thinking that there may be similar ceremonial complexes of this period,” he explained, via email. “It was great to see that there [are] more sites of this type than we expected. It is also remarkable that they had very standardized rectangular formations.”

Although visible on LiDAR maps, many sites, such as one dubbed “La Carmelita” are difficult to find in ground-based surveys, according to the Times.

The discovery of the 27 lost Maya ritual sites sheds new light on the ancient culture. “This is the period when people were just starting to use ceramics and adopting a sedentary way of life,” he explained. “The presence of these formal ceremonial complex in this early period indicates that certain rituals and religious ideas spread over a wide area as people accepted new ways of life.”

There have been a number of fascinating Maya discoveries across central America in recent years.

Experts recently discovered a unique ancient tool that was used by Maya salt workers more than 1,000 years ago. Fashioned from the mineral jadeite, the chisel-style implement was found at the site of Ek Way Nal, a Maya salt works in southern Belize that is now submerged in a saltwater lagoon.

Also in 2018, archaeologists harnessed sophisticated technology to reveal lost cities and thousands of ancient structures deep in the Guatemalan jungle, confirming that the Maya civilization was much larger than previously thought.

LiveScience reports that hundreds of Maya artifacts that may have been used in ritual animal sacrifices have also been discovered at the bottom of a Guatemalan lake.
