Fake News Exposed: Washington Post Gets Busted After Attempting Bogus 9/11 Smear of NC House Republicans

As I wrote Wednesday, the New York Times got taken to the woodshed over how they initially portrayed the 18th anniversary of 9/11 as a day where “airplanes took aim” at the World Trade Center. It was an utterly shameless Ilhan Omar-esque take on the terror attacks that killed nearly 3,000 innocent people after terrorists took aim at the Twin Towers by way of hijacking two planes.

Unfortunately the Times was not the only national newspaper who played fast and loose with the facts on 9/11.

The Washington Post published a report Wednesday afternoon on an incident that happened in the North Carolina state legislature involving a veto override done by House Republicans at the start of the day, and outraged Democrats who melted down on the House floor claiming they were lied to about there being “no votes” scheduled on the 9/11 calendar.

Whether NC House Dems were “lied to” is a separate (and untrue) argument that I won’t get into in this piece. Instead, we’ll focus on how the paper bogusly framed the issue in falsely painting the Republicans in the most unflattering light possible. This led to other national news outlets like CBS and left wing publications/commentators like the Daily Beast, “NowThis News”, and MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow spreading a story that in reality provides us with a classic example of fake news spreading like wildfire.

In the WaPo’s initial story, the headline read something to the effect of “North Carolina Republicans Overrode Budget Veto While Democrats Were at 9/11 Ceremony.” I didn’t get a screen grab of it, but you can see from the URL that’s it’s pretty close to what they had originally.

Reporter Lateshia Beachum started the story off by writing that “While North Carolina Democrats were remembering the lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001, their Republican colleagues took advantage of their absence and …” The screen cap of her original report is below:

Cooper didn’t actually say NC House Democrats were away at 9/11 memorials while the override, but he inferred it:

“Today, on the 18th anniversary of 9-11, while the state was honoring first responders, Republicans called a deceptive surprise override of my budget veto.”

Instead of doing actual journalism by way of independently verifying the claim that NC House Democrats were en masse out solemnly attending 9/11 remembrances while Republicans overrode a veto, Beachum ran with Cooper’s claim uncritically. You can see it by the original headline used, and by how she framed the first two paragraphs.

By reading what she initially reported, you’d think Republicans underhandedly used the 18th anniversary of 9/11 to upstage Democrats after a months-long budget stalemate.

CBS News also ran with it after reporting that a local news media outlet (WTVD) said “many Democrats were at 9/11 commemoration events.” Except there was no such claim in WTVD’s reporting other Cooper’s claim.

“NowThis News” ran with this framing in a tweet that has well over 20,000 retweets as of this writing, and which has been retweeted by liberal comedian Sarah Silverman and actress Alyssa Milano among others. Rachel Maddow ran with this framing (nearly 7,000 RTs). The Daily Beast ran with the framing as well.

The only problem? It’s not true.

North Carolina journalist Colin Campbell, who writes for the Raleigh News and Observer and other local publications, noted in a tweet yesterday that in reality only one House Democrat had attended a 9/11 ceremony:

Westlake Legal Group Campbell9-11Tweet Fake News Exposed: Washington Post Gets Busted After Attempting Bogus 9/11 Smear of NC House Republicans Social Media roy cooper republicans Politics North Carolina News Media Mainstream Media journalism Government Front Page Stories Front Page Featured Story Featured Post fake news democrats Culture Allow Media Exception

In fact, numerous other Democrats were indeed working at the state legislature on 9/11 instead of attending remembrances. Yesterday was not a national holiday and there were bills on the calendar for reconsideration among other important state issues that were being addressed by legislators in both parties.

Another News and Observer journalist noted that audio from Tuesday’s session confirmed votes would be taken on 9/11:

The WaPo issued a bogus “clarification” later and rewrote the story, but by that point it was too late:

For whatever people think about Republicans overriding the veto itself without all members present (it can be done and has been done in the past – by House Democrats when they had control of the state House), the erroneous reporting done by the Washington Post set off a chain reaction of other websites running with the same fake news about how Democrats “were away” at 9/11 ceremonies when they really weren’t:

Usually here in North Carolina it’s the local political media we have to watch out for when it comes to spreading fake news. This time around it was the national media with local news reporters (to my pleasant surprise) correcting them.

The damage has already been done, but nevertheless the truth should be put out there for the record.

Politifact “Fact Checks” Trump’s Comments on Northam and Abortion, Again Proving Fact Checkers Need Fact Checking

That Politifact and mainstream media news outlets alike have inaccurately “fact checked” President Trump’s comments on Virginia Democratic Gov. Ralph Northam’s ghoulish abortion position is not new news, but the issue came up again during Trump’s visit to Fayetteville, NC Monday night before Tuesday’s special election where he again talked about the Governor’s extreme position.

Here is what Trump said:

Last night, Trump described Northam as having said, “after the baby was born, the doctor will talk to the mother and make a decision about whether the baby lives.” Unlike some of Trump’s past references to the comments — in which he described Northam as having endorsed allowing doctors to “execute” babies — this summary is fairly accurate. Given the context of the governor’s response, it’s abundantly clear that he condoned permitting at least some infants to die after birth if they were meant to have been aborted a few minutes earlier.

Trump’s claim is indeed consistent with Northam’s postion. Here’s Northam’s actual quote from the January WTOP interview, with bolded emphasis added:

When we talk about third trimester abortions, these are done with the consent of the mother, with the consent of the physician. More than one physician, by the way. And its done in case where there may be severe deformities, where there may be a fetus that is non-viable.

So, in this particular example, if a mother is in labor I can tell you exactly what would happen. The infant would be delivered. The infant would be kept comfortable. The infant would be resuscitated if that’s what the mother and the family desired, and then a discussion would ensue between the physicians and the mother.

Here’s the video clip of him discussing his position:

Seems clear cut, right? Not so much to the geniuses at Politifact, who re-upped their February fact check Monday night:

After quoting Northam word for word, here’s what they wrote about how Trump characterizing Northam’s position:

Northam, a physician, never said he would sanction the execution of newborns. What he did say during a radio interview is that in rare, late-pregnancy cases when fetuses are nonviable, doctors deliver the baby, keep it comfortable, resuscitate it if the mother wishes, and then have a “discussion” with the mother.

The issue is that Northam declines to say what that discussion would entail. Trump puts words in the governor’s mouth, saying doctors would urge the mother to let them forcibly kill the newborn, which is a felony in Virginia punishable by a long prison sentence or death.

Trump misstates and exaggerates Northam’s words in ways that fan division. Often, that’s enough for us to torch someone’s pants. But Northam left himself open to some interpretation by declining to clarify his confusing remarks.

So we rate Trump’s statement False.

Unbelievable.

You simply cannot trust “official” fact checkers when it comes to Democrats. They might get one right once in a blue moon, but even a broken clock is right twice a day.

“Airplanes Took Aim”: NY Times Shamefully Goes the Ilhan Omar Route in Describing How 9/11 Happened

Westlake Legal Group 911-tower2-hit “Airplanes Took Aim”: NY Times Shamefully Goes the Ilhan Omar Route in Describing How 9/11 Happened Terrorism Social Media Politics NY Times North Carolina New York Times New York never forget Media journalism Ilhan Omar Front Page Stories Front Page Featured Story Featured Post democrats Culture AOC Allow Media Exception Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez 9/11

Five months ago, Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) said “some people did something” in a CAIR speech she gave where she talked about the 9/11/01 terrorist attacks. The “some people” she was referring to, of course, were the radical Islamic terrorists who “did something” by committing the attacks that killed nearly 3,000 innocent people.

Outrage was swift and came from many corners including from President Trump. The New York Post published a brutal front page reminder in response to Omar’s reprehensible comments:

Unfortunately, on the 18th anniversary of 9/11 it seems that the New York Times took a page from Omar’s book in characterizing the horrific events of that awful day.

In a now-deleted tweet they posted early this morning, the paper wrote that “airplanes took aim” at the World Trade Center, rather than noting terrorists “took aim.” They also noted the WTC was where “more than 2,000 people died” rather than accurately reporting it was where “nearly 3,000 people” were killed. Here are a couple of screen captures of the original tweet:

Not only was that how the tweet was written, but the actual story originally contained the same language:

Shorter New York Times: Some airplanes did something.

After a wave of criticism from Twitter users, the story was changed, but it still fell short by saying “people died” instead of “people were killed” (bolded emphasis added):

Once more, families gathered at ground zero, where nearly 3,000 people died on that bright September morning. Once more, there was an outpouring of grief. Once more, there was the sound of a bell tolling in mourning. And there was the rhythm of names being recited.

Eighteen years have passed since terrorists commandeered airplanes to take aim at the World Trade Center and bring them down.

The paper then posted an updated version of the tweet noting the correct number of people killed in the terror attacks (rather than the airplane attacks):

There is just no excuse, zero, zilch, nada, for the way this story was first presented. How many editors did it pass through before it went to publication? And for it to be done by the so-called “newspaper of record”, which is headquartered in the city that faced the brunt of the 9/11 attacks, it’s just flat out unacceptable.

I would be shocked if the paper doesn’t see a rise in people unsubscribing from it after today. Between the anti-Semitism, the TDS that clouds the judgment of their mainstream media reporters, and now this, the paper is literally not worth the paper it is written on anymore.

During an appearance with FIFA president Gianni Infantino earlier today, President Donald Trump joked to members of the mainstream media that he might have to extend a possible second term so he could still be President when North America hosted the Men’s World Cup in 2026.

The Washington Times reports:

President Trump met with Gianni Infantino, chief of the FIFA soccer-governing body, on Monday to discuss the 2026 men’s World Cup and ways to make women’s soccer “even better and more equitable.”

The men’s tournament in 2026 will be hosted by the U.S., Canada and Mexico.

“We’re going to have to extend my second term,” quipped Mr. Trump, who would be term-limited out in January 2025 if he wins reelection. “Because 2026 — I’m going to have to extend it for a couple years.”

Watch video of Trump’s remarks below:

This isn’t the first time, of course, that Trump has jokingly suggested he’d be open to extending his presidency beyond the two term limit:

In May, Trump retweeted Jerry Falwell Jr. when the Evangelical conservative political figure said that the president should have his term extended because of the special counsel investigation into Russian election interference — a “corrupt failed coup,” to use Falwell’s language.

A month earlier, at an event sponsored by the Wounded Warrior Project, Trump joked about remaining in office for even longer than that.

“This will find a permanent place, at least for six years, in the Oval Office,” he said about a trophy he received from the charity. “I was going to joke … and say at least for 10 or 14 years, but we would cause bedlam if I said that, so we’ll say six.”

And in 2018, he expressed admiration for Chinese President Xi Jingping’s limitless term.

“I think it’s great. Maybe we’ll give that a shot someday,” he said.

Even though there’s no question that he is not at all serious about extending a second term, The Usual SuspectsWestlake Legal Group 2122 Trump Jokingly Suggests That He Should Extend a Second Term, and the Liberal Freakout Commences white house washington D.C. The humor scolds at CNN, naturally, indicated back in June that they don’t think he’s joking when he says stuff like this- and they don’t find it funny.

Then again, if I got owned by Trump as much as CNN has, I probably wouldn’t find his jokes about sticking around the White House a few years longer humorous, either.

Can you say “hubris?”

Tucked away in an article entitled “The Joy Of Chores,” Washington Post columnist and Never-Trumper Max Boot laments that, as hard as he tries, “no matter how many columns or sound bites I produce, he [Trump] remains in office.”

Don’t get me wrong. I love what I do and realize I am supremely lucky to be able to make my living by writing and speaking about the news of the day. I find contentment in the craft of writing and fulfillment in self-expression. But I do sometimes wonder what I am actually accomplishing. Much of my journalism for the past four years has been devoted to critiquing President Trump and opposing the spread of Trumpism. But no matter how many columns or sound bites I produce, he remains in office, acting (as Sharpiegate shows) more erratically than ever. Sure, he’s not terribly popular — but he could still be reelected. I am left to ask if all my work has made any difference.

Boot’s comments sound like an article out of the Babylon Bee, but sadly, they’ve come from a regular newspaper. This deluded man, who once or twice a week writes a column denigrating the President believes that his opinion is so important, it can remove a president from office.

Needless to say, many conservatives were quite astonished by Boot’s lack of self-awareness. Conservative writer Charles C. W. Cooke started the ball rolling.

Many twitter users agreed with Cooke. Here are some of the responses to his post.

“Wait this is real?

“Come on. This can’t be real. This is something I would write as parody.”

“wow just like Anthony Hopkins at the end of elephant man, tearfully wondering “what was it all for?…just breaks your heart.”

“Delusions of grandeur met by the reality that nobody cares. Hate to see it.”

“He remains in office because US Presidential terms are for 4 years. What’s his point?”

“This reads like a transcript of a therapy session. ”

“I think I see the problem now. He actually believes he’s persuasive. He’s a modern day Don Quixote.”

“Soft meltdown from snappy fedora guy @MaxBoot…”My journalism”, he says…While lamenting his purposeful targeted activism has failed to make a difference.”

“This sounds like something taken out of his diary, not his column.”

“This is the funniest thing Max Boot has ever written.”

“If I say the say the same thing 1000x in a row, maybe it will be more effective than 999x in a row.”

“Max Boot, who has spent the past four years of his life regurgitating the same column every few days, ponders why his work has yet to nullify the 2016 election.”

On Saturday I wrote about a humorous video President Trump tweeted Friday afternoon that showed CNN, which has obsessively covered the idiotic “Sharpiegate” controversy, had themselves said the state of Alabama was at one point under threat from Hurricane Dorian.

Here’s the video for those who missed it. Some news outlets reported that it was “doctored” but it was only done so to the extent that it showed weather anchor Derek Van Dam say Alabama 10 times in a row. It also included clips of Trump inserted at the beginning and towards the end of the video:

The Trump War Room Twitter account also tweeted out the video minus the so-called “doctoring”:

As I noted in my post, there’s a reason Trump hasn’t given up on this as easily as CNN and other media outlets would like him to. Because the evidence – including evidence that came directly from CNN – backs him up on his initial claims. For example, see this screen grab taken from Sharyl Attkisson, which you can watch play out at this NOAA link:

Unfortunately the mainstream media are still fixated on this issue. So much so that the Washington Post actually sent a reporter to visit Alabama over the weekend in order to prove Dorian did not actually hit the state.

In a piece originally titled “Here in Alabama, no sign of President Trump’s hurricane”, features writer Avi Selk reported:

MOBILE, Ala. — The city stands.

The grocery stores are fully stocked, the Home Depot has no lack of generators, tarps and plywood, and it’s business as usual at the Waffle Houses.

Boaters on the Mobile River have been urged to caution — only because a group of manatees were spotted frolicking nearby. The highway south runs past unsunk boats and unbroken masts all the way to the mouth of the Gulf of Mexico, where resort-town general stores report no panicked runs on supplies — not now and not a week ago, when Trump first claimed Alabama would likely be slammed by Hurricane Dorian.

But it’s always calmest in the center of a storm, sometimes even political ones. The rest of the United States is basically the eyewall: an ever-widening vortex of outrage and bureaucratic retaliations whirling around Trump’s false weather reports.

Selk went on to write about interviews he’d had with area residents to gauge how they felt about Trump’s “false weather reports”, but Selk must have left Alabama sorely disappointed because the piece only quoted three people who were in various stages of upset (from mild to really) over Trump’s initial claims about the possibility of Dorian hitting Alabama.

Selk’s report, I should note, did not include any mention of this tweet from the Alabama National Guard, which was posted just a day before Trump’s first remarks about Dorian and Alabama. Clearly the state believed the lower southeastern section was going to be impacted by the storm:

CNN and Stelter Continue to Create Their Own Storm Damage in Targeting the President

Westlake Legal Group stelterCNN-620x331 CNN and Stelter Continue to Create Their Own Storm Damage in Targeting the President Social Media Politics News Natural Disaster Media Mainstream Media journalism Hurricane Dorian Front Page Stories Front Page Florida Featured Story Featured Post fake news donald trump CNN Brian Stelter Allow Media Exception

As Hurricane Dorian has moved off and become an inconsequential storm in the North Atlantic over at CNN they continue to make themselves inconsequential in their attempt to brew up a tempest over President Trump’s Sharpie advisory. As most would expect a news organization to focus on the storm’s aftermath, especially the damage inflicted upon The Bahamas (you can help here) CNN continues to rail about a perceived error the President made over one week ago.

The tempest involves the President holding a forecast tracking map of the hurricane while it was in the Caribbean and showing Florida as a likely target for landfall. He then chose to manually extend the cone of probability with a Sharpie to show Alabama could also become impacted. CNN and others in the media pounced, as they say, because supposedly official storm offices and researchers had not gone so far as to include coastal Gulf locations.

Except in a fashion they had. As the President himself noted in a tweet he sent out, CNN weather personalities had themselves mentioned Alabama as a possible location for impact from hurricane activity. This has done nothing to alter Stelter’s track on attempting to impact the president. On Brian’s Sunday program Reliable Sources he was still going after President Trump.

You just have to sit back and marvel at how oblivious Stelter is in this segment. He is declaring that Trump is using his campaign playbook of demonizing his network in order to sway the electorate over to his lies, and then he goes on to state that this is all the justification needed to continue what they have been doing. What he is saying is that because the President has declared CNN/the Press his opponent they now have to attack him even more, justifications for doing so being irrelevant.

And with that as his impetus Stelter continued to harp on the hurricane gaffe, hammering away without a nail. In an attempt to offer conflicting evidence as a way to prove Trump wrong Stelter presented this forecast tracking map from NOAA.

Aha! Alabama is not even included — we nailed him! Uh, yes Brian, if you are going to rely upon selective evidence gathering. Turns out if you follow storms with any type of regularity, as we do here less than 100 miles from the cat-5 landfall, there are numerous measurements and projections with these storms, including wind speed charts. These tend to show areas potentially affected by storm winds, and there was one of these charts made available. It was on the day of President Trump’s Sharpie Scandal. Additionally, it was also offered up by NOAA.

Huh. It seems the weather experts were actually citing Alabama as a potential location for activity. This is an interesting omission by Mr. Stelter in his hyperventilating message on a windstorm. Yet despite scientific data to the contrary, and video evidence of his own network making the exact same claims, Stelter states this map conflagration is deeply important.

This past week wasn’t “Sharpie-gate,” it was “lying about a hurricane-gate.”He wasn’t “doubling down” all week, as many people (myself included) said, he was “digging a deeper hole.” He wasn’t stirring a “controversy,” he was politicizing the weather and providing more evidence of his instability.

Amazing the layers of projection in that quote, with Tater accusing The President of all characteristics he is displaying himself. Stelter has declared this to be the biggest lie the President has told in his term so far. This really places Russian collusion in perspective. And in his zeal to deliver rebukes Stelter also states all of this “was about Trump failing a basic geography test.”

That so, Brian? That’s a curious accusation coming from the same network that delivered this map citing Alabama as “Mississippi’ to viewers, at the same time.

Screen grab via CNN.

We are now several days into the Sharpiegate/Hurricane Dorian/Alabama controversy and neither CNN nor Trump are backing down over the issue of whether or not Alabama was ever under threat from Hurricane Dorian.

The media outlet has steadily maintained that Alabama was never at risk to be impacted by Dorian (“He falsely claimed that Hurricane Dorian was likely to hit Alabama.”). Trump said initially it was, although at the time he said it the threat was on the lower end of the scale.

The latest rhetorical salvo came from Trump on Friday, when he tweeted out a humorous video showing that in spite of CNN’s claim that Dorian was never expected to hit the state, CNN weather forecasters themselves initially predicted Dorian could impact Alabama:

President Trump tweeting a doctored CNN clip showing a meteorologist saying Alabama was at risk of getting hit by Hurricane Dorian as he continued to lambast media coverage of his assertion the state was in the path of the storm.

Trump tweeted a video showing a CNN meteorologist explaining that the Carolinas, Georgia, Florida, Louisiana and Alabama were at risk, editing the video so the reporter says “Alabama” 10 times back-to-back.

The video then shows a CNN logo going down a road in lieu of a car only to drive off the street and explode.

Watch:

Here’s another video clip which, towards the end, shows the same CNN segment showing a forecaster saying Alabama was in the storm’s path:

The White House has spent several days trying to counter the narratives from national news outlets like CNN, including DHS issuing this clarifying statement:

There was also this tweet from the Alabama National Guard from Friday the 30th, which clearly shows the state believed they were at one time under threat:

In response to the video Trump tweeted Friday, his critics asserted that the CNN segment where Don Lemon and the weather forecaster were discussing Dorian’s potential impacts was from 3 or 4 days before Trump made his original claim about Alabama, but the critics are as usual completely missing the point. According to NOAA, at the time Trump referred to Alabama as under threat from Dorian, it still was:

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration backed up President Trump’s ongoing assertions that Alabama appeared initially to be in the path of Hurricane Dorian.

“From Wednesday, August 28, through Monday, September 2, the information provided by NOAA and the National Hurricane Center to President Trump and the wider public demonstrated that tropical-storm-force winds from Hurricane Dorian could impact Alabama,” a NOAA spokesman said in a statement Friday evening. “This is clearly demonstrated in Hurricane Advisories #15 through #41, which can be viewed at the following link.”

NOAA’s statement also directly refuted a tweet from the Birmingham National Weather Service that had contradicted Mr. Trump. “The Birmingham National Weather Service’s Sunday morning tweet spoke in absolute terms that were inconsistent with probabilities from the best forecast products available at the time,” the statement read.

Think Progress Shuts Down After Failing to Secure a New Investor

The long-hemorrhaging publication has now ceased to progress forward.

In another announcement of a demise in the digital publishing realm the left-leaning outlet Think Progress is being decommissioned. Recent details were that the site, mired in debt, was being shopped around for new buyers. The announcement was made today that without any financial suitors successfully pinned down that the remaining staff would be released with severance, with some reallocated.

Think Progress was directly affiliated with the Democrat Party through the Center for American Progress. That the party-affiliated program would not be able (or willing) to sustain a foundering news outlet is telling. In the age of Donald Trump there should have been ample material to fuel a left-wing news outlet that had once been pledged to take down GOP opponents. Adding to the challenges was the staff deciding to unionize a few years back.

While long-established as a separate entity from CAP Think Progress has always existed under the umbrella of the organization. This year there had begun to be found visible signs that the Democrat think tank was distancing itself from the site. First came the news of the financial challenges faced by the site, something that would not be circulating had CAP been willing to underwrite the debts.

Another indicator of the deepening problems was this spring when Bernie Sanders erupted in direct conflict with the CAP over the editorial criticism he was receiving from Think Progress. This led to the presidential candidate leveling accusations of CAP about its donors dictating editorial content. CAP President Neera Tanden ended up making comments distancing Think Progress from the group. Making this all the more intriguing — Sanders’ campaign manager is a former editor-in-chief of Think Progress. His foreign policy advisor is also a TP veteran.

These events only seemed to illustrate the disposable nature of TP in the eyes of the Center for American Progress. The outfit was formed by John Podesta during the Clinton administration, and it remains a voice within the Democrat party. For the CAP to not see a viable reason to underwrite Think Progress stands in defiance of much that we hear from the media regarding President Trump.

If there was such an outcry of grassroots opposition then there should be enough of a hunger for the type of content offered by Think Progress. Further, not only does its demise show a lack of true audience desire but so does the fact that a major party outlet saw no intrinsic value in the site as we are on the brink of a major general election.

A news outlet that could guide The Resistance today, and be used as a serious news organ in an election cycle, being cast aside in this fashion spells out far more than the challenges being seen in the digital news evolution.

Bloomberg Law journalist Ben Penn eagerly reported this morning that an adviser to President Trump had resigned “after anti-Semitic Facebook posts” from 2016 “surfaced”:

A recently appointed Trump Labor Department official with a history of advancing controversial conservative and faith-based causes in court has resigned after revelations that he wrote a 2016 Facebook post suggesting the Jewish-controlled media “protects their own.”

Four hours after Bloomberg Law requested comment from the White House and DOL about Leif Olson’s social media post, the department said he has resigned, without elaboration.

Olson, 43, started at the Labor Department’s Wage and Hour Division Aug. 12 as a senior policy adviser, after being cleared for the job by the White House.

[…]

Olson, an unsuccessful GOP candidate in 2012 for a Texas district court judgeship, fired off a series of late-night posts on his personal Facebook page three years ago that started as a sarcastic quip about former House Speaker Paul Ryan’s blowout primary victory. They then devolved into an exchange referencing two anti-Semitic tropes: that Jews control the media and that they look out for members of their own faith.

Here’s the problem with Penn’s “reporting.” It’s clear by looking at what Olson wrote that he was being sarcastic. Here are the comments Penn labeled as “anti-Semitic”:

Philip Klein at the DC Examiner explains:

In reality, the Facebook post in question was the opposite of anti-Semitic. It was a clearly sarcastic post from 2016 about Paul Ryan crushing alt-right challenger Paul Nehlen. If the over-the-top language isn’t a tip off, it’s a fairly dead giveaway that Olson refers to Ryan having “suffered a massive, historic, emasculating 70-point victory.”

When one of the commenters suggests Ryan must be a “neocon” and a Jew, Olson, clearly joking, responded, “It must be true because I’ve never heard the Lamestream Media report it, and you know they protect their own.”

Penn’s characterization was so over-the-top wrong that even liberal Jonathan Chait called him out over the false report:

Sadly, Penn is 100% unapologetic about the results of his erroneous reporting, and is now pretending that he is the true victim in all of this:

Olson’s friend Ted Frank, who is Jewish, ripped Penn’s reporting and correctly pointed out that he had effectively gotten a man who had just moved to DC with his family fired for no reason other than Orange Man Bad:

Should Olson and the DOL/White House have fought back against this false charge? Absolutely. Especially considering how, under the Stelter Standard, so-called “objective” journalists are feeling more free to unequivocally characterize statements as “racist” or “anti-Semitic” rather than using qualifiers like “some view as anti-Semitic” or “some say are racist”, the latter of which allows readers to decide what to think about any allegedly offensive statements.

For anyone out there who still after all this time doesn’t understand why conservatives and Republicans have such negative views about the mainstream press, you can stop wondering now.
