French zoo visitors carve their names on rhino’s back

French zoo blasted the “stupidity” of its visitors on Wednesday after some scratched their names on a rhino’s back.

Shocking photographs shared on social media showing the back of the 35-year-old female rhinoceros inscribed with the names “Camille” and “Julien” immediately sparked an uproar.

La Palmyre zoo in Royan in southwestern France released a statement saying it was “outraged by the stupidity and disrespect” of the visitors, though no legal action will be taken, reported the Agence France-Presse, an international news agency.

The zoo typically allows the visitors to touch the animals over a fence of their enclosure, claiming this creates a “moving” experience that allows the animal lovers to see “the diversity and beauty of nature.”

Zoo director Pierre Caille told the news outlet that the visitors used their nails to engrave their names into a layer of dust, sand and dead skin on the rhino’s back.

“The animal may not even have realized,” he said. “We quickly brushed the writing away and there was no harm to the animal.”

While the zoo reiterated that most visitors are respectful when it comes to touching various animals, some wildlife groups criticized the zoo for allowing “this type of interaction.”

Al Qaeda-linked Syrian militants forced to flee key rebel town

The main Syrian militant group linked to Al Qaeda pulled out of a key rebel town following the Syrian government forces’ campaign of bombardment and airstrikes.

The militant group, operating in the Syrian province of Idlib that held the town of Khan Sheikhoun since 2014, said in a statement released by Syria’s main Al Qaeda-linked faction that it had to make “a redeployment,” with its fighters withdrawing to areas south of the town.

“After fierce bombardment by the criminal enemy that avoids direct confrontation with holy warriors by implementing a scorched-earth policy, our fighters have redeployed south of Khan Sheihoun,” the statement said.

The withdrawal is a major loss for the militants in its last major stronghold of Idlib, in northwestern Syria, though the group pledged to continue fighting Syrian President Bashar Assad’s forces – backed by Russia – and defend the territory it still holds.

The government forces have been conducting an offensive campaign in Idlib and northern parts of the Hama province since April 30, forcing nearly half a million people to flee the area to safety while more than 2,000 people have died, including hundreds of civilians.

Opposition activists say Syrian government forces were able to penetrate parts of the town overnight thanks to air support from Russia. Syrian troops are now working to clear the area abandoned by militants of explosives and booby-traps.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an opposition war monitor, said the Al Qaeda-linked Hayat Tahrir al-Sham and other insurgent groups withdrew from Khan Sheikhoun as well as all the towns and villages south of the town.

The group said Khan Sheikhoun was home to about 1 million people, with nearly 700,000 of them displaced by fighting in other parts of the country.

The town was also a stronghold of the Al Qaeda-linked militant faction, the most powerful group in rebel-held areas in Syria. The town was also the scene of a chemical attack on April 4, 2017, that left 89 people dead.

China could win military conflict in Indo-Pacific region even ‘before America can respond’, think tank warns

A new study by a think tank warns the U.S. has lost its military supremacy in the Indo-Pacific region, with China being able to launch and win a military conflict even before American forces are able to respond.

The University of Sydney’s United States Study Center released a study on Friday detailing the profound changes it claims is happening in the region, paving way for China to exert more influence.

CHINESE DIPLOMAT WARNS BEIJING ‘WILL NOT SIT ON ITS HANDS’; MILITARY RUNS DRILLS NEAR HONG KONG BORDER

The report, titled “Averting Crisis: American strategy, military spending and collective defence in the Indo-Pacific,” claims that “America no longer enjoys military primacy in the Indo-Pacific and its capacity to uphold a favorable balance of power is increasingly uncertain.”

“America no longer enjoys military primacy in the Indo-Pacific and its capacity to uphold a favorable balance of power is increasingly uncertain.”

— The University of Sydney’s United States Study Center

The researchers found that although the U.S. military is still perceived as a force to be reckoned with globally, the “combined effect of ongoing wars in the Middle East, budget austerity, underinvestment in advanced military capabilities and the scale of America’s liberal order-building agenda has left the U.S. armed forces ill-prepared for great power competition in the Indo-Pacific.”

More alarmingly, the report warns that China would be able to use the U.S. military’s lack of reach in the region to launch a military attack against America’s regional allies and achieve victory even before the U.S. responds, Newsweek reported.

“Having studied the American way of war — premised on power projection and all-domain military dominance — China has deployed a formidable array of precision missiles and other counter-intervention systems to undercut America’s military primacy,” the report said.

NEWT GINGRICH: US MUST STAND WITH PEOPLE OF HONG KONG FIGHTING FOR FREEDOM

“By making it difficult for US forces to operate within range of these weapons, Beijing could quickly use limited force to achieve a fait accompli victory — particularly around Taiwan, the Japanese archipelago or maritime Southeast Asia — before America can respond, sowing doubt about Washington’s security guarantees in the process.”

The report comes amid heightened tensions between Washington and Beijing. While the two countries have repeatedly clashed over trade, with President Trump criticizing the Chinese government over policies that he claims hurt the American economy, the U.S. military cautioned China earlier this year over the islands claimed by China in the disputed South China Sea.

Two U.S. warships sailed near islands claimed by China back in May, while two American nuclear-capable B-52H flew over the South China Sea at least twice in March.

US WARSHIPS SAIL NEAR DISPUTED ISLANDS CLAIMED BY CHINA, AS TENSIONS ESCALATE: REPORT

The South China Sea has been the site of ongoing tension, primarily between the U.S. and China, which claims nearly all of the strategic waters despite competing claims from other Southeast Asian nations.

But as the U.S. and China engage in more symbolic military moves, the Friday’s study claims the Chinese military could launch a “limited war” to retake Taiwan or fully take control of the disputed islands using not only conventional capabilities but cyber and political weapons as well.

“In all these scenarios, Beijing’s aim would be to strike first to secure longstanding political goals or strategically valuable objectives before the United States can do anything to stop it,” the report said.

Jeffrey Epstein’s high-profile associates ‘breathing a sigh of relief’ after death: Deroy Murdock

High-profile people in politics and finance are likely “breathing a sigh of relief” after disgraced multimillionaire Jeffrey Epstein was found dead from an apparent suicide early Saturday morning inside his Manhattan jail cell, said Fox News contributor Deroy Murdock.

The 66-year-old Epstein, who was accused of sex trafficking minors, died at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York City. He was transported to the New York Presbyterian-Lower Manhattan Hospital and was dead on arrival, officials said.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons confirmed that the FBI would be investigating the death.

JEFFREY EPSTEIN FOUND DEAD IN MANHATTAN JAIL CELL; MULTIPLE REPORTS CLAIM DEATH BY SUICIDE

Murdock told “Fox and Friends” Saturday morning that the shock death raises questions about how Epstein, who was already once found in his cell with thumbprints on his neck, ended up dead.

“Apparently he was supposed to be on suicide watch. Given how high profile a suspect he is, you’d think there would be a doctor in there …. and cameras and lights to make sure nothing like this happen,” he said.

“The fact he was able to either commit suicide or somebody got to him – who knows what happened because so little information here – it is amazing.”

The Fox News contributor went on to stress that Epstein’s alleged crimes implicated a lot of high-profile individuals, perhaps most notably former President Bill Clinton who occasionally flew on Epstein’s airplane.

“What was Bill Clinton’s involvement in any of this, if any, what was the involvement of high-profile people in finance, politics etc.,” Murdock said. “There are a lot of very high-profile people who may be breathing a sigh of relief that this witness of all those allegations no longer is with us.”

The death comes two weeks after the 66-year-old was placed on suicide watch after he was found nearly unconscious in his cell with injuries to his neck. At the time, it was not clear whether the injuries were self-inflicted or from an assault.

The New York City medical examiner’s office told Fox News that an autopsy is pending to determine the cause of death.

Murdock notes that an investigation will have to answer “what really happened at that cell” and what was the exact cause of his death. “I’m very curious to see the autopsy results,” he said.

Murdock added: “The bigger ongoing question is these people accused of being involved in [Epstein’s crimes] … do they just walk or do the prosecutors go after those people?”

Tanker truck in Tanzania explodes as people siphon fuel, at least 62 killed

A damaged tanker truck exploded in Tanzania Saturday, with at least 62 people burning to death, making it one of the worst incidents of this kind in the country.

At least 70 people more were injured, many suffering from serious burns, in the incident in the town of Morogoro – about 120 miles west of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania’s economic capital – as people were trying to siphon fuel out of the tanker truck.

Tanzanian government spokesman Hassan Abbasi said the news of the deaths was “received with sadness” and sent condolences to the families of the victims.

Witnesses told the Associated Press that a crowd had gathered around the fuel tanker after it was involved in an accident early Saturday. People then rushed to try to siphon fuel, but the tanker burst into flames.

Israel’s military said Saturday its troops killed four armed Palestinian militants who tried to cross the Israel-Gaza perimeter fence.

Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus said the militants were on a “very significant attempt to attack Israel” and that they carried RPG launchers, assault rifles, grenades, and wire cutters.

He said Israeli soldiers opened fire when the militants tried to climb the fence, and that the militants returned fire before being killed. No Israelis soldiers were injured.

“The terrorists were equipped with AK-47 assault rifles, RPG grenade launchers, and hand grenades,” the Israeli army’s statement said. “The army opened fire after one of the terrorists scaled the barrier and hurled a grenade at the soldiers.”

Israeli officials claimed the “organization affiliation” of the four militants was unknown but stressed that Hamas, a Palestinian terror group controlling the Gaza strip, was “responsible and accountable for any acts of violence emanating from the Gaza Strip whether they were Hamas operatives or not Hamas operatives.”

A Hamas spokesman said the four Palestinian militants were engaging in “an individual act,” emphasizing that the operation was not planned by Hamas.

Abdel-Latif al-Qanou said Saturday that the attempted infiltration into Israel was carried out by “angry youths” who were enraged over Israel’s 12-year blockade of Gaza.

“The occupation is responsible for the state of anger and pressure inflicted on our people due to the continued siege on Gaza,” he said in a statement.

NETANYAHU SLAMS ‘VICIOUS TERRORISTS’ OVER MURDER OF SOLDIER, 19; HAMAS PRAISES ‘HEROIC OPERATION’

Israel and Hamas have agreed to an informal cease-fire in May following the worst round of clashes since the 2014 war.

Hamas has been organizing weekly protests along the Israel-Gaza frontier since March 2018 against the strip’s dire conditions following 12 years of Israeli-Egyptian blockade.

The death of four militants also comes as Israel is in mourning over the death of a 19-year-old soldier in the West Bank, with Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu denouncing the killing as a terror attack.

Dvir Sorek was found dead with stab wounds in the Gush Etzion region of Judea and Samaria on Thursday, the military said. He was a student at a pre-military Jewish seminary in the Gush Etzion settlement bloc, south of Jerusalem. His body was found on the side of a road near the seminary, he was neither armed nor in uniform.

It remains unclear who perpetrated the attack, but the Islamic militant group Hamas celebrated the murder.

“We salute the hero fighters, sons of our people, who carried out the heroic operation which killed a soldier of the occupation army,” Hamas said in a statement.

Biden once saw diversity as ‘poppycock,’ lamented US lack of unifying ethnicity

Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden is facing new scrutiny over his past ncomments that diversity in the U.S. was “a bunch of poppycock.”

Biden, who has established himself as the frontrunner in the race for the Democratic Party’s 2020 presidential nomination, has more recently stressed the importance of America’s diversity and criticized President Trump over his immigration policies.

“This is America, and we are strong and great because of this diversity, Mr. President, not in spite of it,” Biden said on the Democratic debate stage last month.

“America’s strength is and has always been rooted in our diversity,” Biden wrote in a tweet last month.

BIDEN SAYS ‘POOR KIDS’ JUST AS BRIGHT AS ‘WHITE KIDS’ IN LATEST GAFFE

But Biden took an opposite view back in 1976, during his days as a U.S. senator from Delaware, and bemoaned in that bicentennial year that there was no single ethnicity that united the country, the Washington Examiner reported.

“I told you [in a previous speech] about my view that the uniqueness of America didn’t lie in the fact that we’re a great melting pot,” Biden said during an annual Jefferson-Jackson Dinner in Boise, Idaho, in February 1976.

“We hear that all the time, about it being black and white, rich and poor, Christian and Jew — therefore we’re strong. I told you then, I thought that was a bunch of poppycock.”

— Joe Biden

“We hear that all the time, about it being black and white, rich and poor, Christian and Jew — therefore we’re strong. I told you then, I thought that was a bunch of poppycock,” he continued.

“The fact we are black and white doesn’t bring us together as a nation. The fact that we’re Christian and Jew doesn’t send us running into one another’s embrace to herald our differences. The fact is that people fear differences. The fact that the reason this nation is able to be the most heterogeneous nation in the history of mankind is not because it’s a melting pot. It’s because unlike any other nation in the world, we are uniquely a product of our political institutions.

CORY BOOKER CALLS OUT BIDEN OVER ‘KID IN HOODIE’ REMARK, SAYS BETTER ‘LANGUAGE’ NEEDED TO TALK ABOUT RACE

“If France tomorrow, for example, were to turn in [sic] a monarchy, I told you, I did not believe that France would substantively change. Because in France there’s an ethnicity that binds them together, a cultural tie. You don’t have that in America,” he concluded.

“In France there’s an ethnicity that binds them together, a cultural tie. You don’t have that in America.”

— Joe Biden

The remarks are sure to give ammunition to progressive Democrats running for president. They have criticized the former vice president over his previous opposition to federal desegregation efforts and his past touting of his ability to work with segregationists in the Senate.

Biden has been stumbling on the campaign trail over the issue of race relations. Back in a June he was criticized after saying in a Chicago speech, “That kid wearing a hoodie may very well be the next poet laureate and not a gangbanger.”

Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., who’s also running for president, criticized Biden, saying, “This isn’t about a hoodie. It’s about a culture that sees a problem with a kid wearing a hoodie in the first place. Our nominee needs to have the language to talk about race in a far more constructive way.”

This week, Biden told a crowd in Iowa that “poor kids are just as bright and talented as white kids.” After a very brief pause, Biden quickly continued speaking, adding: “Wealthy kids, black kids, Asian kids.”

In response, President Trump told reporters Friday that Biden “is not playing with a full deck,” adding, “He made that comment and I said, ‘Whoa.'”

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez blasted Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Monday over a picture of men – wearing “team Mitch” T-shirts – appeared “groping and choking” a cardboard cutout of her.

The New York Democrat took to Twitter to slam the picture after it surfaced on social media. There’s no additional information about when the picture taken or whether or not the men are affiliated with McConnell’s campaign.

MITCH MCCONNELL CAMPAIGN CRITICIZED FOR PHOTOS OF TOMBSTONES WITH DEM NAMES

“Hey @senatemajldr – these young men look like they work for you,” Ocasio-Cortez tweeted. “Just wanted to clarify: are you paying for young men to practice groping & choking members of Congress w/ your payroll,” she asked, “or is this just the standard culture of #TeamMitch?”

The photograph was first surfaced by a Twitter user named @emrazz and the initial caption read, “Break me off a piece of that.”

The freshman congresswoman has pressured McConnell for declining to bring a Senate vote on a gun control bill in the wake of shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio.

MCCONNELL WILLING TO CONSIDER ‘BIPARTISAN’ GUN VIOLENCE SOLUTIONS, OPPOSES ‘INFRINGING’ ON RIGHTS

“The House passed HR8, a Bipartisan Background Checks Act, *5 months ago* and the Senate has yet to vote on it,” she tweeted. “It was one of our 1st major priorities after ending the gov shutdown. You’ve been sitting on it since February giving bogus excuses. Care to explain the people why?”

Her call to bring the vote also was in response to McConnell’s tweet offering condolences to the families.

“The entire nation is horrified by today’s senseless violence,” tweeted the top Senate Republican. “Elaine’s and my prayers go out to the victims of this terrible violence, their families and friends, and the brave first responders who charged into harm’s way.”

Other prominent Democrats such as Sen. Bernie Sanders and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer also reportedly called for the bill passed by House Democrats to be brought to a vote.

McConnell said Monday that he’s willing to consider “bipartisan” solutions in the wake of the mass shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, but made clear his opposition to gun control policies that infringe “on Americans’ constitutional rights.”

“Today, the president called on Congress to work in a bipartisan, bicameral way to address the recent mass murders which have shaken our nation,” McConnell said in a statement. “Senate Republicans are prepared to do our part.”

North Korea says Kim Jong Un supervised third weapons test this week in a bid to keep pressure on US, South Korea

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un supervised a third weapons test this week in an effort to beef up the country’s ability to strike targets in South Korea, including U.S. military bases there.

Pyongyang’s official Korean Central News Agency reported on the test a day after South Korea’s military said it detected North Korea firing projectiles twice into the sea off its eastern coast in its third round of weapons tests in just over a week.

North Korea said Thursday, Aug. 1, leader Kim supervised the first test firing of a new multiple rocket launcher system that could potentially enhance its ability to strike targets in South Korea and U.S. military bases there.

The tests are thought to be part of the effort to continue the pressure on Washington and Seoul over the recently stalled nuclear diplomacy. The North also objects to the planned joint U.S.-South Korea military exercises that the regime called the preparation for an invasion.

The regime’s media said Kim expressed “great satisfaction” over Friday’s tests and claimed it confirmed the system’s “altitude control level flight performance, track changing capability, accuracy of hitting a target and warhead explosion power of the guided ordnance rocket.”

South Korea’s presidential office claimed the U.S. and South Korean militaries’ assessment said Friday’s launches were likely short-range ballistic missiles.

The South also concluded that the weapons tested on Wednesday are ballistic missiles even though the North described them as a “large-caliber multiple launch guided rocket system.”

NORTH KOREA FIRED ‘MULTIPLE’ PROJECTILES OFF EAST COAST, SOUTH KOREA REPORTS

During the test on Friday, the projectile flew 220 kilometers (137 miles), according to South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff, meaning it could reach the Seoul metropolitan area, where about half of South Koreans live, and a major U.S. military base just outside the capital city.

The North Korean regime previously said the weapons tests were a “solemn warning” to “South Korean military warmongers” in the wake of the South’s purchase of high-tech, U.S.-made fighter jets and the planned joint military drill.

The United Kingdom, France and Germany on Friday condemned the North’s recent activity as violations of U.N. sanctions and urged the regime to engage in “meaningful negotiations” with the U.S. on reducing its nuclear arsenal.

The three countries reiterated that sanctions on the country should remain in place until its nuclear and ballistic missile programs are dismantled.

In a separate report by KCNA, an unidentified spokesperson of North Korea’s Foreign Ministry slammed the three countries, saying that the regime never has and never will recognize the UN resolutions it sees as a “grave provocation” against its government.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
