Beto O’Rourke on Dem debate attacks: ‘I’m not running against anybody,’ I’m running for the country

Beto O’Rourke said Thursday he’s “not running against anybody” when asked about the attacks by his rivals in the first Democratic presidential debate of the 2020 election cycle.

The former congressman admitted Thursday that he felt like a target on the debate stage, particularly after his Democratic opponent Julián Castro called him out over immigration.

“I feel like my responsibility on that stage is to describe and define what I want to do for this country, and the way in which I want to do it,” O’Rourke said during an appearance on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”

2020 DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATES GANG UP ON BETO AT FIRST DEBATE

“I’m not running against anybody — I’m running for the United States of America. So I wanted to outline our vision, the means that would allow us to achieve it.”

— Julián Castro

“I’m not running against anybody — I’m running for the United States of America. So I wanted to outline our vision, the means that would allow us to achieve it.”

He was quizzed by the show hosts over why he didn’t use the platform to attack fellow Democrats and their policies, especially given that O’Rourke is trailing in polls.

While he refrained from slamming his opponents, other candidates didn’t share the same view and made repeated attacks against him.

In a segment about immigration, O’Rourke was pressed by Castro over whether he would support decriminalization of border crossings, an idea O’Rourke brushed off over concerns about prosecuting drug smugglers and human traffickers.

“I just think it’s a mistake, I think it’s a mistake, Beto, and I think if you truly want to change the system, then we got to repeal that section,” Castro fired back. “If not, it might as well be the same policy.”

O’Rourke defended himself by saying he would work to rewrite the country’s immigration laws in general, prompting a stark rebuke from Castro.

“That’s actually not true. … If you did your homework on this issue, you would know we should repeal [the law that criminalizes illegal border crossings],” Castro said.

Despite the criticism, O’Rourke gave himself an “A” rating for his performance on Thursday. “I was really happy with how I did. I got to lay out why I’m running for president,” O’Rourke said.

“My job is to explain that on that stage and … bring this country together around the means to actually get that done,” he added, also telling CNN that he did feel other candidates were targeting him specifically.

For his part, Castro told Fox News’ Shannon Bream after the debate that his policy for decriminalization isn’t as radical as people think.

“He clearly had not done his homework,” said Castro, dismissing O’Rourke’s concern about smugglers and drug traffickers by arguing that there are existing laws to deal with those issues.

“Morning Joe” host Joe Scarborough said it was “a missed opportunity” for Democrats in the first 2020 debate to not go after Joe Biden or President Trump.

“On the first night, they didn’t go after Joe Biden. When you’re sitting with 42-43 percent in the early states and they are not attacking you, that’s an interesting dynamic,” Scarborough said Thursday morning.

“Also for Americans, this election is about one thing. It’s about one man. It’s about Donald Trump,” the MSNBC host added, before pointing to his political career as an example.

“It was just a little congressional seat, but when I ran in 1994, we had 11 people in the field and I was the underdog. I never talked about one of them. I stayed laser-focused on Bill Clinton,” he said.

“That’s what you have to do. And last night they didn’t go after Biden. They didn’t go after Trump. And I think it was a missed opportunity.”

Scarborough went on to criticize the 2020 Democrats for embracing the “very unpopular” ‘Medicare-for-all’ policy, saying the Trump campaign will use it to attack during the general election.

Anderson Cooper says ‘stench’ is coming from federal immigration authorities over migrant detention facilities

CNN host Anderson Cooper said a “stench” is coming from federal immigration authorities over the handling of the migrants crossing the border.

Cooper made the comments Tuesday after Acting Customs and Border Protection Commissioner John Sanders’ resignation and the pressure on the Trump administration to improve the conditions of the migrant detention facilities.

“Some of the people responsible… compare the influx of migrants to a storm or flood or a tide, as if this all fell from the sky or rolled in from the sea,” he said.

“At the end of the day, though, this is not an act of God. These are people, poor people, young people and whatever you think about the case they may have for coming here, they are here.”

‘VIEW’ HOST JOY BEHAR USES SHOCKING COMMENT TO CRITICIZE MIGRANT CAMPS UNDER TRUMP

“They are now in custody here and those words in custody don’t just mean are being held, they mean in the care of, or as Webster’s has it, the act or process of preserving in safety, which is not what’s happening,” he added.”

The CNN host noted that the “stench” caused by subpar conditions in the facilities was actually coming from the authorities responsible for the situation.

DEM-LED HOUSE PASSES $4.5B BILL TO AID MIGRANTS AT BORDER, SETTING UP SHOWDOWN WITH GOP-LED SENATE

“Most of the young detainees have not been able to shower or wash clothes since they arrived at the facility. Those who visited said they have no access to toothbrushes, toothpaste or soap. ‘There is a stench, said Elora Mukherjee, director of the Immigrants’ Rights Clinic at Columbia Law School, one of the lawyers who visited the facility. ’The overwhelming majority of children have not bathed since they crossed the border,’ she said,” Cooper said.

He added: “There is a stench, she said, speaking literally of human beings living worse than animals because animals at least have the means to clean themselves. She might have well been speaking figuratively of the stench coming from the places where the people responsible for all this are failing to take responsibility.”

The House approved a $4.5 billion supplemental spending bill on Tuesday night to address humanitarian issues at the U.S.-Mexico border and to provide additional funding for food, water, medical services and stronger protections for unaccompanied children, among other things.

The House bill, which passed 230-195, included specifics that would prevent the Trump administration from allowing any funding to go toward beefing up Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) personnel at the border, likely to become a point of contention with Republicans.

Mnuchin says US-China trade deal is 90 percent done

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said Wednesday that the U.S. and China are inching closer to finalize a long-awaited trade deal.

Mnuchin made the announcement in the backdrop of the G-20 meeting this weekend in Japan where President Trump and President Xi Jinping could make the breakthrough in trade talks that have recently stalled.

US-CHINA TRADE WAR COULD LEAD TO SHORTAGE ON BIBLES, CHRISTIAN BOOKS, PUBLISHERS SAY

“We were about 90% of the way there and I think there’s a path to complete this,” he told CNBC.

“We were about 90% of the way there (with a deal) and I think there’s a path to complete this.”

— Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin

“The message we want to hear is that they want to come back to the table and continue because I think there is a good outcome for their economy and the U.S. economy to get balanced trade and to continue to build on this relationship,” he continued.

“I’m hopeful that we can move forward with a plan … President Trump and President Xi have a very close working relationship. We had a productive meeting at the last G-20.”

Mnuchin claims he remained confident that an agreement could be inked by the end of this year, but cautioned that “there needs to be the right efforts in place.”

The U.S. and China have been embroiled in a trade war, with both countries slapping punitive tariffs on each other in retaliation.

TRUMP, XI TO MEET AT G-20 AS TRADE HOSTILITIES PERSIST

Last month, the Trump administration increased tariffs on $200 billion in Chinese imports from 10 percent to 25 percent.

In retaliation, China increased tariffs on thousands of American products worth about $60 billion. A 25 percent tariff was levied on a few thousand other products, including soy oil, peanut oil, petrochemicals, frozen minerals and others.

Trump repeatedly criticized China for, in his view, unfair trade practices that exploit the U.S. market at the cost of American manufacturing and other jobs.

Experts said that while the Trump-Xi meeting at G-20 will unlikely to result in a deal that weekend, it should progress the talks and open more opportunities for negotiators to come up with a solution to finalize the deal.

Dems hope for explosive Mueller testimony despite his pledge to not go ‘beyond report’

Democrats hoping for explosive testimony of former Special Counsel Robert Mueller on July 17 may end up disappointed. Mueller has previously said his report is “my testimony” and that he won’t go “beyond our report.”

Mueller’s appearance before the House judiciary and intelligence committees will come following a subpoena, according to the committees’ respective chairmen, Reps. Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., and Adam Schiff, D-Calif.

House Democrats have seized on the Mueller report detailing Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election and some have cited possible examples of President Trump’s obstruction of justice, as detailed in the report, as grounds for impeachment.

JAY SEKULOW: MUELLER TESTIMONY TO HOUSE LAWMAKERS WON’T DIFFER FROM HIS REPORT

But the effort to bring a deeply polarizing figure to the Capitol may leave the Democrats empty-handed as Mueller himself stressed during an unprecedented press conference last month that he won’t be adding anything more than what’s already in the report.

“The report is my testimony. I would not provide information beyond that which is already public in any appearance before Congress.”

— Robert Mueller

“Now I hope and expect this to be the only time that I will speak to you in this manner. I am making that decision myself. No one has told me whether I can or should testify or speak further about this matter,” Mueller said May 29.

“There has been discussion about an appearance before Congress. Any testimony from this office would not go beyond our report,” he continued.

“It contains our findings and analysis and the reasons for the decisions we made. We chose those words carefully and the work speaks for itself. And the report is my testimony. I would not provide information beyond that which is already public in any appearance before Congress.”

CHAD PERGRAM: MEDIA COVERAGE OF MUELLER TESTIMONY WILL BE ‘OFF THE RICHTER SCALE’

Yet Democrats appear to tout Mueller’s upcoming testimony not for any new information he may disclose but because he will repeat the findings of the report in a public forum that will be watched by millions of people.

“Russia attacked our democracy to help Trump win. Trump welcomed and used that help. As Mueller said, that should concern every American,” Schiff wrote in a tweet. “And now, every American will get to hear directly from Mueller.”

But the latest stunt may even backfire as Mueller will also be grilled by Republicans about the allegations of spying on the Trump campaign, the text messages between FBI officials Lisa Page and Peter Strzok, and the salacious dossier penned by former British spy Christopher Steele that they claim eventually paved way to the Russia probe.

Trump’s attorney, Jay Sekulow, echoed Mueller’s previous comments on Tuesday night amid the news of his testimony, saying the testimony is unlikely to differ from the report.

“I don’t think you’re gonna see anything different in his testimony than in his report,” Sekulow said on Fox News’ “Hannity.” “There are a lot of questions that have to be asked and have to be answered. … I can make a list of 100 questions.”

7-year fight for Lake Washington shoreline ends with Seattle paying $800G to property owners, turning lot into public park

A Lake Washington shoreline lot near Lake City has become a public park, ending a seven-year fight that pitted local residents and adjacent property owners who wanted to take the land for themselves.

A 60-foot-wide lot will be accessible to the public and named as N.E. 130th Street End, a win for the community that has used the lot for decades but lived in the cheaper houses up the hill from the beach.

CALIFORNIA FARMERS FURIOUS OVER DELAYED PAYMENTS FOR LAND SEIZED IN HIGH-SPEED RAIL PUSH

The city of Seattle, meanwhile, paid $800,000 to Keith Holmquist and Fred Kaseburg, who owned properties on each side of the lot, after trying to use legal loopholes to take control of the lot The Seattle Times reported.

The decision to make the land public stems both Holmquist and Kasenburg’s discovery that the status of the lot between their properties was unclear as a deed back in 1932 conveying it to the Cedar Park Community Club – for use as a public beach – had never been delivered, according to the outlet.

This prompted the men to lay claim to the land in 2012 and in 2015 put up a sign stating that it was a private property.

Holmquist defended against the complaints from the locals and told the Times in 2015 that the lot has been used for anti-social activity. “Alcohol, sex out there, drug use,” he said.  “Hypodermic needles, syringes. Beer cans, hard-liquor bottles.”

NEW YORK BOOKSTORE CLASHES WITH DE BLASIO OVER HISTORIC LANDMARK DESIGNATION: ‘IT’S REALLY NO HONOR’

But this only led to locals organizing in an effort to turn the land private. Dave Pope, a retired graphic designer, led the movement and carried the complaints to the Seattle City Council.

The council agreed with the locals, unleashing another round of legal efforts by the landowners to appeal the council’s intent to either negotiate or use eminent domain powers to acquire the property.

After years of appeals, the men ultimately settled on a figure –$435,798 for Holmquist and $364,202 for Kaseburg. “It was a substantial amount,” Holmquist told the newspaper.

Iran says it will respond ‘firmly’ to US aggression amid retaliatory cyberattack, aborted military strike

Iran cautioned Saturday that it will “firmly” respond to any aggression or threat by the U.S., a warning that comes after President Trump aborted a military attack while a U.S. cyber team carried out a retaliatory digital strike against the regime.

Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi reiterated the regime’s position that it will confront any threats by the U.S. over the shooting down of an unmanned U.S. Navy drone by the Islamic Republic.

US NAVY DRONE SHOT DOWN BY IRANIAN MISSILE OVER STRAIT OF HORMUZ IN ‘UNPROVOKED ATTACK,’ CENTRAL COMMAND SAYS

“Regardless of any decision they (U.S. officials) make… we will not allow any of Iran’s borders to be violated. Iran will firmly confront any aggression or threat by America,” he said, according to the semi-official Tasnim news agency.

The comment comes in the wake of heightened tensions in the region that put Washington and Tehran on the brink of a war.

Trump said Friday that he halted the strike just 10 minutes prior because of the projected casualty loss, saying that it wasn’t a “proportionate” response to Iran previously shooting down an American military drone.

“10 minutes before the strike I stopped it, not … proportionate to shooting down an unmanned drone. I am in no hurry, our Military is rebuilt, new, and ready to go, by far the best in the world,” he wrote in a tweet, but added that the U.S. was “cocked & loaded to retaliate.”

Iran claimed the U.S. drone on Thursday was over Iranian airspace when it was shot down – but American officials stated unequivocally the incident occurred in international airspace.

State Department officials also decried “pure Iranian propaganda” reports – based solely on the Iranians’ comments – that claim Trump warned Tehran in a message through Oman that a U.S. attack on Iran was imminent,

“Reports that a message was passed last night to the Iranians via an Omani back channel are completely false. These reports are pure Iranian propaganda. #Iran needs to meet our diplomacy with diplomacy,” State Department spokesperson Morgan Ortagus wrote in a tweet.

TRUMP CONFIRMS HE CALLED OFF RETALIATORY IRAN ATTACK ‘10 MINUTES BEFORE THE STRIKE’

But while the military air strike was called off, U.S. Cyber Command launched a digital strike against an Iranian spy group on Thursday, Yahoo News reported.

The spy group is close to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, a terrorist-designated entity, and reportedly supported the limpet mine attacks on two oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz.

Additional details about the digital response weren’t available, though private American cyber groups have said that Iranian state-sponsored hackers are targeting U.S. organizations, adding Iran’s response against the U.S. will likely be executed in cyberspace.

“The question is whether or not this is intelligence collection associated with the conflict, or if it is something more aggressive, like laying the groundwork for a destructive or disruptive attack,” John Hultquist, director of intelligence analysis at cybersecurity company FireEye Inc., told the Wall Street Journal.

The U.S.-Iran confrontation has been boiling since Trump backed out of the Obama-era nuclear deal in May 2018.

But the tensions reached a fever pitch in recent weeks after two oil tankers were attacked, supposedly by the Iranian forces as the regime flexes its muscles over tough sanctions that caused its currency to drop by about 60 percent in 12 months while food and drug prices are up 40 and 60 percent, respectively.

Iran is currently also seeking to renegotiate the nuclear deal with European countries, arguing that the deal must be improved amid U.S. sanctions or the regime will begin enriching uranium up to 20 percent – just a step below weapons-grade level.

A British judge ordered Friday that an abortion be performed on a mentally disabled woman who is 22 weeks pregnant, despite objections from the woman and her mother.

Justice Nathalie Lieven admits in the ruling of the “heartbreaking” case that it’s an “immense intrusion” to order the abortion against the woman’s will, but argued that it’s in the best interest of the woman.

“I am acutely conscious of the fact that for the State to order a woman to have a termination where it appears that she doesn’t want it is an immense intrusion,” the justice said. “I have to operate in [her] best interests, not on society’s views of termination.”

The unnamed woman, a Roman Catholic, reportedly has developmental disabilities and the mental age of a 6- to 9-year-old. She has been described as being in her 20s and is in the care of an NHS trust, as part of the country’s National Health Service.

The woman’s mother, a former midwife, opposes the abortion procedure and told the court that she could take care of the child with the support from the daughter, Sky News reported.

A social worker who works with the woman also said the pregnancy should not be terminated.

But the judge said the woman didn’t have the mental capacity to make her own decisions even it look like she wanted to continue the pregnancy.

She added that having a child would be more traumatic for the woman than aborting it, as she wouldn’t be able to take care of the child due to the risk posed by her mental health problems and it would have to be put in a foster care.

“Pregnancy, although real to her, doesn’t have a baby outside her body she can touch,” Lieven added.

Police are reportedly investigating how the pregnancy happened in the first place.

AOC’s Dem rival, Joe Crowley, now backing candidate against hers in New York DA race

Former U.S. Rep. Joe Crowley may get his revenge by proxy on Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in a district attorney race — after being embarrassingly dethroned last year.

Crowley, previously a top Democrat whose years-long political career was derailed by the self-described Democratic Socialist, is opposing Ocasio-Cortez’s growing influence in New York state politics.

AOC ATTACK GROUP TARGETS TOP DEM — WHO VOTED WITH HER 96% OF THE TIME BUT CRITICIZED OMAR

He’s helping raise money for Queens Borough President Melinda Katz, a district attorney candidate who’s competing against public defender Tiffany Cabán, the candidate backed by Ocasio-Cortez, Politico reported.

“Melinda and I both grew up here, went to school here, have sung together at countless community parties here, and most importantly have dedicated our careers to improving the lives of the people who call this wonderful borough home,” Crowley wrote in the fundraiser email, asking for donations of $50 to $200.

“For as long as I’ve known Melinda, she’s always shared my commitment to making Queens a safer, more just place for our families, and I know she’ll do the same from the DA’s office.”

Katz is among the leading candidates in the seven-way Democratic primary to fill the seat that became vacant after DA Richard Brown died last month.

But Cabán is mounting a serious challenge as her progressive platform attracted the support not only from Ocasio-Cortez, but also from Democratic presidential candidates Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren.

This prompted Queens Democratic Party leader Greg Meeks to slam both Warren and Sanders, though he omitted Ocasio-Cortez’s backing of Cabán.

“I don’t know who they spoke with, but clearly they did not speak with the elected officials of Queens County, or the people who elected them,” Meeks said in a statement, the New York Post reported.

“African-Americans have the largest stake in this DA race … Yet Warren and Sanders saw fit to endorse without even considering what African-Americans thought.”

The DA race showdown shows the growing influence of Ocasio-Cortez in New York.

For example, Justice Democrats, a group closely aligned with the freshman Democrat, is working to unseat Rep. Eliot Engel, a 30-year Democratic New York congressman who called out Rep. Ilhan Omar over anti-Semitism.

Engel, a hawkish Democrat who co-sponsored a Medicare-for-all plan, had joined Ocasio-Cortez and other progressive colleagues in introducing the Green New Deal, a radical overhaul of the economy in a bid to combat climate change. He has also voted with Ocasio-Cortez 96 percent of the time so far.

AOC attack group targets top Dem — who voted with her 96% of the time but criticized Omar

A far-left group backed by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is supporting a political newcomer to unseat a 30-year Democratic New York congressman who called out Rep. Ilhan Omar over anti-Semitism.

Justice Democrats, a group that initially recruited Ocasio-Cortez to run against former Rep. Joe Crowley, is targeting Rep. Eliot Engel.

The candidacy of Jamaal Bowman, a 43-year-old public middle school teacher, was put forward by Justice Democrats in a continued effort to elect more progressive Democrats to Congress, the New York Times reported.

Yet Engel isn’t the moderate Democrat that his critics claim to be. He co-sponsored a Medicare-for-all plan and even joined Ocasio-Cortez and other progressive colleagues in introducing the Green New Deal, a radical overhaul of the economy in a bid to combat climate change. He has also voted with Ocasio-Cortez 96 percent of the time so far.

The source of frustration for the progressive is likely due to Engel’s rather hawkish views on foreign policy, including voting for the Iraq War in 2002, though he criticized the war in later years.

Engel, who is Jewish, has also angered far-left block of the party after he openly criticized Omar after the Minnesota Democrat said that “the political influence in this country that says it is OK to push for allegiance to a foreign country,” referring to Israel, which many perceived as anti-Semitic comments.

SENATE EXPRESSLY CONDEMNS ANTI-SEMITISM, AFTER DEMOCRAT-LED HOUSE ‘CAN’T BRING ITSELF’ TO DO THE SAME

In a fiery statement back in March, Engel said that though he welcomes debate about policy, “it’s unacceptable and deeply offensive to call into question the loyalty of fellow American citizens because of their political views, including support for the U.S.-Israel relationship.”

“We all take the same oath. Worse, Representative Omar’s comments leveled that charge by invoking a vile anti-Semitic slur,” he added.

Yet Engel challenger’s campaign appears to be taking off, already racking up prominent support from progressives.

“An education warrior, looks promising!” Cynthia Nixon, the former “Sex and the City” star and failed New York gubernatorial candidate, wrote in a tweet Tuesday.

“I’m supporting Jamaal Bowman for Congress in New York’s 16th Congressional District. He’s a lifelong educator and school principal in the Bronx. His experience, his values, and his policy ideas are what we need,” activist Shaun King tweeted.

Bowman released his first video Monday, where he speaks about his background and the news to build “new America.”

“It’s time to build a new America ― a new America that taps into its unlimited potential, a new America that leverages the brilliance of children and people from diverse backgrounds,” he said. “That’s the America I want to be a part of, the America I want for my children and grandchildren.”

Ocasio-Cortez has been on the board of Justice Democrats before she was de-listed back in March following legal and ethical questions about her affiliation with the group. Her Financial Disclosure form submitted last month still lists her as a director of the organization.
