WaPo: Reporting on Elizabeth Warren lying is an unfair smear

Westlake Legal Group EWarren WaPo: Reporting on Elizabeth Warren lying is an unfair smear Washington Post WaPo The Blog lying Elizabeth Warren 2020 Democratic primaries

This whole story about Elizabeth Warren supposedly being fired from a teaching job because she was pregnant has taken on a life of its own. This is almost entirely her own fault because I don’t recall anyone else bringing it up until she started telling the tale repeatedly on the campaign trail. A bit of investigation by the Washington Free Beacon soon revealed that she had actually been offered another term teaching and her resignation had been accepted “with regret.”

Reporting on the story is, however, apparently some sort of sin, at least in the eyes of Margaret Sullivan at the Washington Post. It’s a “smear.” And this terrible attack on Warren’s honesty and credibility must be put to rights one way or another. With that in mind, the author launches into a defense of Warren, opening with the mindboggling sentence, “A news report can be narrowly factual, and still plenty unfair.”

Lady, you had me at “narrowly factual.” Let’s see what this is about.

It wasn’t until the next day that some much-needed perspective began to emerge, thanks to a CBS News report.

It included crucial context that would have been ever-so-helpful in the initial piece, like this interview with a retired Riverdale teacher, Trudy Randall:

“The rule was at five months you had to leave when you were pregnant. Now, if you didn’t tell anybody you were pregnant, and they didn’t know, you could fudge it and try to stay on a little bit longer. But they kind of wanted you out if you were pregnant.”

The author goes on to quote Warren’s latest explanation of this apparent contradiction, saying that she was pregnant but “nobody knew it.” And when it became too obvious to hide, the principal called her into the office, wished her luck and said he was going to “hire somebody else for the job.” That’s a statement full of implications, but notice how she still never comes out and says the words “he fired me” or any variation along those lines.

And why would the official record show that the school accepted her resignation “with regret” if the official policy was to ask female teachers to leave at five months into their pregnancy?

This all supposedly took place almost fifty years ago in 1971, before many people reading this were even born. Presumably, anyone who had been around long enough to rise to the rank of principal or sit on the school board was at least in their thirties or forties by then, so they’re likely no longer alive. Certainly someone would have sought out an interview with the principal were he still among the living. So what we have here is Warren’s word against that of a dead man.

The statement from the retired teacher offers no indication that she was familiar with the circumstances of Warren’s departure or if the two even knew each other. She’s describing her impression of what could generously be called an unofficial policy. In other words, you can believe what was reported in the minutes from the Riverdale, N.J. school board or what Warren is now saying. (I specify “now” because it’s also been pointed out that she described her departure from the school during a 2007 interview without ever mentioning being fired.)

In other words, this entire piece builds a case for why it’s still possible that Warren is telling the truth without offering a single bit of factual evidence or even first-person testimony from anyone involved in the situation in 1971. It’s pure speculation, but apparently sufficient to call any reference to the school’s records a “smear.” Of course, Sullivan later goes on to describe Warren’s claims of significant Native American heritage as a “blunder.” (Which sounds so much nicer than a lie.)

But hey… just because something is “narrowly factual” doesn’t mean it’s true, right?

Rising disagreement among congressional Democrats over whether to pursue impeachment of President Donald Trump has had little effect on the party’s presidential candidates, who mostly are avoiding calls to start such an inquiry. (AP Photo/Robert F. Bukaty, File)

Who could have imagined that Elizabeth Warren could have the capacity to lie about her background? Shocking, if true.

Warren has been sharing an anecdote lately involving the claim that she was once fired from a teaching job over being pregnant. This obviously plays into every woke stereotype involving discrimination and the current Democrat presidential candidate has decided to make her story a staple of her stump speech. You can find examples of it being spouted going back to the beginning of the year.

The problem was that Warren had told a completely different story back in 2007, as was covered here at RedState late last week.

But in a March 8, 2007 interview with Harvard Law Professor Leo Gottlieb, Warren made it clear that such discrimination had nothing to do with the loss of that teaching job.

Warren told Gottlieb how she had earned a full scholarship to George Washington University at 16, and graduated with a degree in speech pathology and audiology, and didn’t mention the commuter college that has become another pillar in her bio. She then explained that she left her public school job after one school year because she lacked the educational credentials to qualify for a permanent position, and that she decided on her own to abandon the calling.

Note the language she uses about qualifying for a permanent position, because new documents show that not only was she lying about being let go, she had actually been offered another year long contract extension to keep her job.

The Free Beacon uncovered this today.

Minutes of an April 21, 1971, Riverdale Board of Education meeting obtained by the Washington Free Beacon show that the board voted unanimously on a motion to extend Warren a “2nd year” contract for a two-days-per-week teaching job. That job is similar to the one she held the previous year, her first year of teaching. Minutes from a board meeting held two months later, on June 16, 1971, indicate that Warren’s resignation was “accepted with regret.”

And lest someone tries to pretend this is just Warren living in a gray zone and that she actually meant something else, nope. She pointedly claimed the principal “didn’t ask” her back.

Warren’s book, A Fighting Chance, published a year after she was sworn in as a senator in 2013, tells something of a different story, though the two aren’t necessarily incompatible. “By the end of the school year, I was pretty obviously pregnant,” Warren wrote in the book. “The principal did what I think a lot of principals did back then—wished me good luck, didn’t ask me back the next school year, and hired someone else for the job.”

That, ladies and gentlemen, is calling bald-faced lying for political gain.

Sure, that’s not necessarily unique among politicians, but what is unique is that the media don’t care to report on this at all. If this were Trump or any other Republican caught in such an obvious lie, it’d be headline news for a week but it won’t be. Heck, they aren’t even covering it.

Take this ridiculous tweet by Nate Silver.

Yes, how very interesting. It’s a total mystery why the mainstream media aren’t picking up this story. It’s not like they have been in the bag for Warren since the beginning of the summer or anything.

To tie a bow on all this, Warren is documented in the minutes of the 1971 meeting as actually quitting.

Toward the end of Warren’s first year on the job, in April 1971, the board approved her contract for the following school year, the meeting minutes show. Two months later, the meeting minutes indicate that Warren had tendered her resignation.

“The resignation of Mrs. Elizabeth Warren, speech correctionist effective June 30, 1971 was accepted with regret,” the June 16, 1971, minutes say.

In summary, not only did the school board let her go as she claims, they offered her another year of employment. Her response was to tender her resignation two months later. Perhaps she did that out of frustration, but by her own admission, she didn’t qualify for a more permanent position.

No matter how you read these documents, it’s clear she lied and continues to do so.

Senate Democrat Who Claimed Evidence of Trump-Ukraine Quid Pro Quo Changes His Story

Westlake Legal Group a8636803-f428-4e76-ab5b-b516cf1d9e5e-620x317 Senate Democrat Who Claimed Evidence of Trump-Ukraine Quid Pro Quo Changes His Story whistle-blower Ukraine Trump scandal pressure Politics media bias Made up lying Joe Biden hack Front Page Stories Front Page free beacon Featured Story donald trump democrats corruption Chris Murphy

It’s almost like all these Democrats who constantly proclaim they’ve got evidence that will bring Trump down are just full of it?

As we move through the ridiculousness that is the current Trump-Ukraine “scandal,” one figure that attempted to place himself as offering corroboration of wrongdoing was Sen. Chris Murphy. He claimed that Ukrainian president Zelensky personally told him Trump pressured him to investigate Biden.

This per the Free Beacon.

Senator Chris Murphy (D., Conn.), who traveled to Ukraine in early September, told reporters this week that he had heard “directly” from Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky that Zelensky felt pressured by Trump to investigate Hunter Biden’s involvement with Ukrainian gas giant Burisma…

…The senator said Monday that the “entire new Ukrainian administration” including Zelensky told him they believed the United States withheld aid due to his “unwillingness to investigate the Bidens.”

“Once I got on the ground there, I heard about how confused the entire new Ukrainian administration was about the nature of these demands they were getting from the Trump administration to conduct this political investigation, and that they worry that the aid that was being cut off to Ukraine by the president was a consequence for their unwillingness, at the time, to investigate the Bidens,” Murphy said, adding that the concern was relayed to him “from the president directly.”

This was bandied about early this week as proof that Trump had broken the law and applied immense pressure on the Ukrainian president to investigate Joe Biden. Eventually, we’d get the transcript and learn that it was a completely mundane conversation with no pressure or threats applied. Actually, it was surprising just how nonchalant Trump was about Biden. He didn’t press the issue at all and Ukraine wasn’t even aware of any holdup with the military aid.

It’s also worth nothing that Murphy’s claims of what Zelensky told him were back-filled. He originally made no mention of any such conversation and only took to the press to make his claims after the whistle-blower story broke. It was way, way too convenient. Then the Beacon got a hold of the Sept. 11th audio, where Murphy is shown to have no mentioned any of this.

Now, apparently realizing he’s been caught in a lie, Murphy is running to change his story.

Oops. That’s pretty for removed from “they thought aid was being withheld because of Biden” isn’t it? Far removed might be an understatement. It’s not even close to the same thing.

And just like that, another plank in all this nonsense collapses. Will any media outlet call out Murphy for lying? Of course they won’t, but I’m not sure it matters anymore. There are plenty of alternative forms of media that are doing great work on this story and the news is getting out there. CNN and The New York Times can keep playing patty cake.

Ilhan Omar’s Excuses for Her Latest Controversy Don’t Add Up

Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., listens as Office of Management and Budget Acting Director Russell Vought testifies before the House Budget Committee on Capitol Hill in Washington, Tuesday, March 12, 2019, during a hearing on the fiscal year 2020 budget. (AP Photo/Susan Walsh)

Yesterday, it was noted that something strange happened on Rep. Ilhan Omar’s Twitter account. Namely, that she deleted a tweet from seven years ago in which she wished her father a happy Father’s Day. My colleague Elizabeth Vaughn wrote about the initial incident, which you can read here.

This would all seem inauspicious if not for the content involved.

The math is simple. Omar acknowledges in her old tweet that Nur Said was her father. Ahmed Nur Said Elmi was Omar’s mysterious, past husband. In Arabic, the father’s name is the middle name you see here, i.e. Nur Said. Are we really supposed to keep thinking all of this is coincidence?

Omar apparently thinks so, as she put out this statement in response.

So she was calling her father Nur Said as a nickname? Let’s note that’s something that happens in Arabic households. You don’t call a father a completely different surname, especially not in traditional, more fundamentalist households, which Omar was a part of. What “doctored” images is she even talking about? I couldn’t find any proof of that. The threats angle is also weak. If she receives constant threats, why wait until someone points out the discrepancy involving her marrying her brother to run and delete it?

None of this makes any sense at all.

This isn’t going to just go away, nor should it. There’s not just smoke here, there’s fires burning out in the open. Omar has spent years deleting social media posts and purging her online presence. This was long before she even had a major public profile after 2018. She wasn’t doing that because of “death threats” or any other nonsensical excuses. She was covering something up and she continues to do so.

Even the naming conventions that Omar claims don’t add up. It’s is all very confusing (no doubt by design) but you can read about some of glaring red flags here going all the way back to 2016 investigative reporting. Why did her father change his name? Why did he go by Nur Said on Omar’s sister’s marriage certificate? Where’d the name Omar even come from? No one can seem to find any other relatives that go by that name.

Everything here is pointing to immigration fraud and more and more evidence is mounting that she married her brother. The mainstream press won’t touch this and it’s a testament to how useless they are. If a Republican were caught up in something like this, there would be a dozen reporters from The Washington Post alone assigned to digging deeper. Instead, Omar is allowed to obfuscate, refuse to answer questions, and pretend like nothing is suspect. Eventually the truth is going to come out though.

News Breaks that Andrew McCabe Will Be Charged By the DOJ and the Flop Sweat Builds

Westlake Legal Group mccabe-crawling News Breaks that Andrew McCabe Will Be Charged By the DOJ and the Flop Sweat Builds prosecution Politics lying leaking Lacked Candor Justice james comey Hillary Clinton Front Page Stories Front Page Featured Story FBI donald trump doj democrats CNN charged bill barr Andrew McCabe

Color me surprised. It looks like the DOJ has finally decided to hold someone accountable for what went on during the Hillary-Trump investigative fiasco.

Former FBI Assistant Director and current CNN talking head, Andrew McCabe, failed to convince the DOJ not to move forward with prosecution against him after a last ditch effort to change their minds. This report is coming via Fox News. The Daily Caller’s Chuck Ross, who’s been killer on this beat, also confirms this story is accurate.

U.S. Attorney Jessie Liu has recommended moving forward with charges against Andrew McCabe, Fox News has learned, as the Justice Department rejects a last-ditch appeal from the former top FBI official.

McCabe — the former deputy and acting director of the FBI — appealed the decision of the U.S. attorney for Washington all the way up to Jeffrey Rosen, the deputy attorney general, but he rejected that request, according to a person familiar with the situation.

The potential charges relate to DOJ inspector general findings against him regarding misleading statements concerning a Hillary Clinton-related investigation.

A source close to McCabe’s legal team said they received an email from the Department of Justice which said, “The Department rejected your appeal of the United States Attorney’s Office’s decision in this matter. Any further inquiries should be directed to the United States Attorney’s Office.”

This comes in response to the Inspector General finding that McCabe had lacked candor (i.e. lied) to the FBI multiple times involving leaks to the press.

There’s also the factor of McCabe suing the FBI last month that plays into this. Perhaps McCabe’s arrogance wrote a check his butt can’t cash? Trying to sue when he was clearly fired for just cause likely only emboldened the U.S. Attorney to press forward with prosecution.

We can’t mention McCabe without talking about CNN either. Despite the IG report and all the facts known about McCabe, CNN hired him on as an “analyst” last month in a widely mocked move. Is there any wonder that network is cratering in the ratings and has lost all credibly?

Drink the schadenfreude in.

This is the beginnings of what justice looks like. After every single Trump lackey who looked at an FBI agent the wrong way was charged during the Mueller saga, it would have been untenable for the DOJ to then look the other way at their own committing the same crime.

While this certainly won’t gain back the trust these institutions have lost, it’s a start in the process. Bill Barr is doing things the right way and if the indicators we are seeing tell the story, he’s not done yet. More prosecutions are coming.

There’s going to be a lot of new flop sweat building among people who thought they were in the clear.

Michael Flynn’s Legal Team Throws Down the Gauntlet

The case of Michael Flynn’s plea deal, which he made after being strong armed by Robert Mueller’s virtuous troop, continues to drag out. This time, Flynn’s lawyers are back in court and they are going hard at the DOJ’s conduct.

As the Washington Examiner Reports, Flynn’s legal team is presenting their case to the presiding judge that the DOJ continues to hide evidence that could exonerate Flynn.

Mike Flynn’s attorneys said the government is hiding evidence that could help President Trump’s former national security adviser.

Sidney Powell, the head of Flynn’s new legal team, claimed in court Tuesday the Justice Department withheld evidence related to Andrew McCabe, Peter Strzok, Lisa Page, James Comey, Flynn’s FBI interview notes, and more.

“There never would’ve been a plea to begin with” if Flynn knew how much information DOJ was hiding, Powell said. Flynn pleaded guilty in 2017 for lying to investigators about conversations with the Russian ambassador.

Judge Emmet G. Sullivan, who is presiding over the case, gave Powell an unusual amount of leeway as she argued the government withheld information from her client to pressure him into accepting a guilty plea, which he never would’ve done had he been aware of all the facts. Flynn’s sentencing has been delayed for a year as he cooperated with the government.

When you look at how Flynn was entrapped, it’s obvious the FBI/DOJ are hiding something here and want to save face. We know Flynn did nothing illegal by participating in the phone call with the Russian Ambassador during the 2016 transition period. We know the agents who interviewed Flynn did not think he was lying. We also know Flynn was strung along by Andrew McCabe and James Comey, who presented the interview as just a friendly chat, without revealing he was under any kind of investigation.

But more things are being exposed now. Namely, that the DOJ knew Flynn had not violated the Logan Act, but still used it to threaten and force him into a plea deal.

She claimed documentation exists that shows then-FBI deputy director McCabe ruled out Logan Act charges against Flynn in January or February of 2017, yet DOJ “egregiously” held the possibility of being charged under the 18th-century statute over his head during plea negotiations anyway.

Powell said the defense still hadn’t been given access to all the interview notes from Flynn’s discussions with FBI agents, including one written by agent Joe Pientka that the government claims it no longer has.

I can hear the rebuttals now. “Well, it’s his fault for taking the plea.” Nonsense. When you have Robert Mueller, with unlimited resources, bringing the entire weight of the federal government down on your head and financially destroying you, you take the plea to the lesser charge. There’s also been much talk that Mueller threatned to go after Flynn’s son as well.

None of this happened on the up and up. Mueller wanted a scalp and Flynn was one of the few he could take while still bandying a “Russian collusion” story line, even though the phone call itself turned out to be nothing.

For the DOJ’s part, they argue they did give Flynn the text messages in question.

Brandon Van Grack, formerly of special counsel Robert Mueller’s team who now heads up DOJ’s FARA unit, told the judge that “following the court’s standing Brady order has always been the guideline the government has pursued.” The prosecutor said that, before Flynn’s plea deal, Flynn had been made aware of the Strzok-Page texts “before the public knew they existed.”

“The government has never alleged that Mr. Flynn was an agent of Russia,” Van Grack said. “He pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about particular issues related to Russia, not about being an agent of Russia.”

Again, this is nonsense. Flynn only pleaded out because the government were threatening him (and his son) with FARA and Logan Act violations. Now the DOJ wants to claim they were never worried about Flynn being a Russian agent. That’s some serious spin by the government. You can’t use something to beat someone into a decision and then claim that something was never relevant to the decision being made. Of course it’s relevant, going all the way back to whether Flynn had all the information necessary to make the right choice on taking the plea deal.

This kind of game playing by the DOJ and Mueller is exactly why no one trusts these agencies anymore. If Flynn had evidence hidden from him, the plea should be vacated. As it stands though, it doesn’t appear Judge Sullivan, who’s more than shown his bias in this case, wants to do that. Instead, the more likely scenario here is that Flynn isn’t sentenced to any jail time.

Man Calls Trump a Slur, Here’s How Kamala Harris Responded to Him

Kamala Harris has stepped in it again.

Fresh off letting you know she wants to control every aspect of your life at CNN’s climate change town hall, Harris hit the campaign trail again. She’s currently languishing in a distant fourth place in the Democrat primary and needs any boost she can get. While in New Hampshire, she took a comment from man ranting about impeachment.

Then things escalated.

“I don’t buy that argument that impeachment does not make sense; the Senate will acquit. I don’t buy that argument. There needs to be accountability. What are you going to do in the next one year to diminish the mentally retarded actions of this guy,” said the man, as some in the audience chuckled.

“Well said,” Harris responded. “Well said.”

“I plan to win this election, I’ll tell you that.”

Harris’ reaction didn’t sit well with with even some liberals, who see using the phrase “mentally retarded” as highly offensive. Worse, Harris then decided the best response to to lie and say she didn’t hear the man.

If you watch this video, this isn’t just improbable, but impossible. She heard it, no question.

Of course, the media are buying her story because that’s what they did. Get a load of this headline.

She also laughed and said “well said,” but I guess that context wasn’t important to CBS. It must be really nice to be a Democrat politician. Not only can you get away with anything, but the media will go out of their way to present you as “above the fray.”

The simple fact is that Harris is just bad at this. I haven’t bought into her campaign from day one. Even after everyone was on her bandwagon after the first debate, I wrote an article here opining she was a sucker’s bet. She’s just a terrible, inauthentic candidate. Way too many people bought into the idea that because she’s black and a woman, that she was going to rocket to the top.

It hasn’t happened and it’s not going to.

Yesterday, Donald Trump was asked if he had a message for Poland on the 80th anniversary of the Nazi invasion. Part of the answer he gave is that he wanted to “congratulate” Poland and this led to the snark being unleashed at The Washington Post, because they are really smart and stuff.

President Trump is known to make the odd comment here and there about foreign nations, often because he doesn’t seem particularly versed in what’s happening in them. But even by his standards, this was quite a weekend.

Trump was asked Sunday about the trip to Poland he canceled to monitor Hurricane Dorian. Asked if he had a message for that country, which was commemorating the anniversary of the start of World War II, Trump decided to … congratulate it?

So did this really happen? Did Donald Trump actually congratulate the Polish on being invaded by the Nazis as the headline and lead in state?

In a word, no, no he didn’t. Here’s the full quote with the full context, which is actually in the Post article, yet their editors still thought framing it the way they did was a honest portrayal.

I do have a great message for Poland. And we have Mike Pence, our vice president, is just about landing right now. And he is representing me. I look forward to being there soon.

But I just want to congratulate Poland. It’s a great country with great people. We also have many Polish people in our country; it could be 8 million. We love our Polish friends. And I will be there soon.

He was congratulating them on being a “great country with great people.” That’s the very next line, so there is no confusion about what he was saying.

You see, great countries with great people often have a tendency to survive incredibly trying situations and oppressive horrors. The Polish people did that, from the Nazis to the Soviet occupation. This shouldn’t be difficult to understand, but the Post’s Aaron Blake (who fancies himself as a “fact-checker” of sorts) is either too much of a hack or too intellectually vapid to give an honest account here. Nowhere does the President congratulate them on being invaded or even suggest such. It’s not just an uncharitable reading of his comments, it’s so ludicrous as to show immense bias by any reporter who would present it as such.

Given the actual context, what’s the Post do? Why, they double down of course and up the snark to eleven.

Man, they are just so smart and so knowledgeable, aren’t they? I’m glad we have them here to set us straight. Also, want to know where the Post first got this story from?

I actually saw the original tweet by Rupar before the Post ran with it. Even then, it was obvious Trump hadn’t said what he was being accused of. Rupar’s entire shtick is to selectively edit clips of Trump and present them as accurate translations so he can snark and scoff. Amazingly, the media don’t go after him for it despite the fact I’ve been assured selectively edited videos are harmful. I guess that treatment is reserved for fork lift drivers in New York who make meme videos.

These outlets are just pure garbage at this point, only worthy of mention to critique and ridicule.

Joe Biden Just Makes Up a War Story While Campaigning

This seems fine.

Joe Biden can’t stop committing gaffes, although I question whether it’s even accurate to call making something up a gaffe. It’s probably more accurate to just say he lied.

Fox News delivers the details of this latest episode. It starts with Biden recounting that he flew into Afghanistan, through the teeth of danger, to honor a Navy Captain. The problem is that basically none of what he says is true.

According to Biden, he brushed off concerns about the risk of him traveling to the deadly area. “We can lose a vice president,” he said, recounting his words to a crowd during an event on Friday. “We can’t lose many more of these kids. Not a joke.” His story involved the captain dramatically telling Biden he didn’t want the medal because his comrade ended up dying.

But after speaking with more than a dozen military and campaign sources, the Post determined the event “never happened” and that “almost every detail in the story appears to be incorrect.”

“It appears as though the former vice president has jumbled elements of at least three actual events into one story,” the Post’s Matt Viser and Greg Jaffe wrote.

They added that Biden rattled off a slew of inaccurate facts in the span of just a few minutes.

“In the space of three minutes, Biden got the time period, the location, the heroic act, the type of medal, the military branch and the rank of the recipient wrong, as well as his own role in the ceremony,” Viser and Jaffe wrote.

Biden has a habit of this, and I’m not talking about his habit of making things up or forgetting where he is. I’m talking about him continually painting himself as being much more than he actually was as Vice President. We saw it with his ludicrous descriptions of dealing with Ukraine, where he presented himself as levying threats and getting things done, as if he actually had the power to make any decisions without Obama’s approval. Here, Biden inserts himself as a would be war hero, risking his own life to do well by a service member. In the end, his story comes off as simply using the military as pawns to promote how great he is, and that’s a problem even without the inaccuracies.

Of course, the inaccuracies are also a problem. When nearly every detail in a story turns out to be wrong, that doesn’t say a lot about Biden’s current mental capacity. He’s either really bad at lying or he’s honestly mixing up details and events to a striking degree. Neither is good.

At least he didn’t claim to be dodging sniper fire like a certain past Democrat nominee, so he has that going for him.
