Is our most prolific serial killer actually a serial liar?

Westlake Legal Group SamLittle Is our most prolific serial killer actually a serial liar? The Blog serial killer Samuel Little murder convictions confession

I haven’t written about convicted murderer Samuel Little before now because frankly, monsters tend to make me uncomfortable. And there seems to be no question that this guy is a monster. He’s already serving multiple life sentences for murder, but his recent revelations to law enforcement officials have started generating a lot of headlines. Rather than focusing on the three murders he’s already doing time for, Little has started confessing to a staggering number of other killings, now numbering in the 90s, vaulting him to the position of potentially being the most prolific serial killer in the country’s history.

But is it all true? Little has already been assured that he won’t face the death penalty if he fully cooperates, and with that assurance in his pocket, he’s laying claim to a shocking number of grizly homicides. But some investigators are beginning to wonder if all of this information that could close countless cold cases is too good to be true. This lengthy report from the Washington Post explains why doubts are being cast, but Little still may be telling the truth.

The two cold cases Miami-Dade authorities pulled from a dusty warehouse made an uncanny fit with Little’s recollections, from the cement arch he said he drove under before choking Miriam Chapman to the way he buried Mary Brosley with her leg sticking out because the dirt was so hard.

“We knew what the deal was because he had given these details without even talking to us,” Denmark told The Washington Post.

It’s those kinds of details that have persuaded authorities to declare Little the most prolific serial killer in U.S. history, a title that takes more than confessions to earn. Little’s late-in-life disclosures to a Texas investigator were just the start of law enforcement’s efforts to confirm a record 50 killings by the same man — while avoiding the pitfalls that humiliated officials in the same state in the 1980s when another convict recanted hundreds of murder confessions.

But why would Little claim all of these killings if he didn’t actually do them? The workings of the criminal mind remain mysterious, but if he’s lying he wouldn’t be the first one. I still remember profiles of the Zodiac Killer back in the 70s. One problem that investigators ran into was the significant number of people who would call in and claim to be the killer. Police had to run down and check out each of these claims, wasting significant time and resources. Each and every one turned out to be confused and/or mentally ill people who couldn’t possibly have done the crimes and knew no details about them.

The WaPo article also recounts the story of Henry Lee Lucas. Back in the 80s, Lucas was on trial for murdering one elderly woman and suddenly began telling the court that he had killed hundreds of others. Prosecutors from around the country eagerly lined up to see if Lucas could be guilty for all of their cold cases, eventually adding up to nearly 600. It later became obvious that he couldn’t possibly have done them all and had, in fact, only killed three people. That left law enforcement with egg on its face.

But Little may be different. He’s providing a lot of details in some of these unsolved murders that were never made available to the public and investigators have been careful not to give him any material to work with. These include facts like local landmarks near the crime scenes and how the victims were positioned when their bodies were buried or abandoned. And the really amazing part is that Little is doing it all from memory. If all of this is true, he’s some sort of murderer savant.

In yet another bizarre twist, authorities have released a gallery of hand-drawn/painted portraits that Little himself created. They depict the faces of roughly fifty of his alleged victims, all of whom would have gone missing between the 1970s and 2005. Perhaps some families will be able to recognize a long lost loved one lead to closure for them.

Aside from some sort of sick fascination, it’s difficult to deal with a story like this. Do we hope that Little is telling the truth and nearly one hundred families wind up getting closure? I suppose that’s the “upside” to the story if he’s right. But then we’re left once again dealing with the reality that monsters truly do walk among us.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez – Caricature by DonkeyHotey, licensed under CC BY-SA 2.0/Original

At this point, I’m just assuming the left is fully aware that Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is extremely ignorant, crazy, or both because every time she opens her mouth or tweets something out, ridiculousness comes spewing forth like an exorcist scene.

Take this tweet from AOC about how we should start seriously considering shutting down prisons because they’re leftover remnants of a racist America.

“Mass incarceration is our American reality. It is a system whose logic evolved from the same lineage as Jim Crow, American apartheid, & slavery,” tweeted AOC. “To end it, we have to change. That means we need to have a real conversation about decarceration & prison abolition in this country.”

Let’s get the obvious facts out of the way. Yes, we could use some criminal justice reform and our prison systems are far from perfect.

Should they be completely eliminated?

In order for that to happen, I’m wondering what kind of solution AOC has for serial murderers and rapists. How does she intend to punish child abusers or those who beat their wives and girlfriends? What about those who intentionally cheat the people out of money through scams.

I doubt the left would get behind this either. Where would they put Donald Trump in their weird fantasies after the law comes and gets him for being a big meanie? Where would Bill Nye put the people who deny climate change? What would they do if they don’t have a place to send people who say things like “men are not women?”

Once again, AOC is suggesting things that have zero sense behind them and no explanation as to how they’re going to work.

I’m under the impression that Ocasio-Cortez seems to think that everyone is a good soul underneath and with a little time and effort, anyone can be rehabilitated. Again, I agree that when it comes to many people in prison, rehabilitation, education, and no shortage of the love of God can bring anyone back from the darkness and turn their life around.

However, some people just can’t be saved due to one reason or another, and they’re going to do bad things that hurt a lot of people. They can’t help themselves, maybe because they’re mentally ill or their childhoods were so damaging that their psychological trauma has them almost programmed to act a certain way.

It’s clear that it’s all unicorns and rainbows to AOC and that she lives in some sort of fantasy land where socialism works, there is no social conflict, and anyone who makes mistakes is just a misunderstood person who we should all feel sorry for like some Disney villain in her own movie.

Heck, we even have the money to take in and give welfare to everyone who immigrates here illegally according to her proposals.

Witness in cop’s murder trial apparently murdered

Westlake Legal Group guyger Witness in cop’s murder trial apparently murdered witness trial The Blog murder Amber Guyger

The trial of former Dallas police officer Amber Guyger and her subsequent conviction for the murder of Botham Jean may be over, but the story has taken yet another bizarre twist. We learned yesterday that a key witness who testified at the trial was shot dead on Friday. But Joshua Brown had time to call the police before he expired, letting them know what happened. A few details have been released, but there is still no suspect in custody as of this morning.

A neighbor who testified in the murder trial of former Dallas police officer Amber Guyger was fatally shot Friday night at a Dallas apartment complex, police said Saturday.

Civil rights attorney S. Lee Merritt, who represented Jean’s family, tweeted Saturday that Brown’s mother asked him “to help find out who murdered her son.”

Without mentioning Brown by name, the Dallas Police Department said in a news release that a shooting victim had called police about 10:37 p.m. Friday and later died at a hospital.

This killing is raising obvious questions in the media and among the public, but with so few details available we shouldn’t be jumping to any conclusions yet. It’s certainly tragic, but also odd that a witness in such a high-profile trial would be gunned down within days of the trial’s conclusion, but if you’re trying to silence a witness you would generally want to do it before they testify, right?

The police report that Brown was at an apartment complex roughly six miles away from the one where Guyger and Jean lived. He’s also described as having been a neighbor of Jean’s, but a separate report indicates that he’s since moved to the new location. Since he was on the phone with the cops before he died, if he knew his assailant we might assume that the person would either already be in custody or at least be being sought as a person of interest.

Still, it’s entirely possible that this was some random act of violence and/or robbery that just turns out to be a tragic coincidence.

I’ve been following the Guyger story for a while, but haven’t written about it. There’s a lot to digest, but frankly, I still don’t understand how the prosecution managed to obtain a murder conviction. I’m not saying Guyger should have got off scot-free in this case and could certainly see her going down for manslaughter of some sort. But murder?

Murder implies intent of some sort, even if it’s a spur of the moment decision. This report has most of the details that came out during the trial and I’m not seeing it. To my knowledge, nobody has even suggested that Guyger even knew Botham Jean, to say nothing of having some sort of beef with him leading her to want him dead. She’d been working heavy overtime shifts and was exhausted when heading home.

She parks on the wrong floor of her apartment complex garage, gets out and walks to the door on that floor corresponding to her own. The door’s lock is damaged so it can just be pushed open, leading her to believe someone might have burglarized her home. Pushing the door open, she sees a man she doesnt’ know inside. From that point a series of very bad decisions are made to be sure and Jean winds up dead. Guyger handled the entire thing horribly and is clearly responsible for Jean’s death. But was it murder? It just sounds like a series of tragic mistakes.

In any event, hopefully the Dallas PD will identify and bring in the person or persons who shot Brown. Once their identity is known we should have a better idea of whether this was an act of revenge in some way related to the trial or yet another tragic coincidence.

Charity event for fallen police officer canceled because guess who was invited…

Westlake Legal Group police-memorial Charity event for fallen police officer canceled because guess who was invited… The Blog police murder invitation charity

Out in Ventura County, California, County Sheriff’s Seargent Ron Helus was killed in the line of duty last year during the mass shooting at the Borderline Bar & Grill. An investigation revealed that Helus and his fellow officers essentially “walked into an ambush.” This Sunday, a charity event featuring a flag football game, dubbed “the Blue Bowl” was scheduled to raise money to help Helus’ widow and child, along with the families of other LEOs who fell in the line of duty. That’s a nice gesture for those who gave all to serve their fellow citizens, isn’t it?

Except now it’s apparently not going to happen. The event has been “indefinitely postponed” after Thousand Oaks Police Chief Tim Hagel withdrew his department from participation. The thousands of dollars already raised are being returned. Why? The Chief was no longer “comfortable” with the event because Trump supporters had been invited to speak there. (Fox News)

A charity event planned in honor of an officer killed in a 2018 mass shooting at a country music bar in in Southern California has been postponed indefinitely — reportedly because a police chief didn’t want Republicans invited.

The Blue Bowl, a charity flag football game, was intended to raise money for the family of fallen Ventura County Sgt. Ron Helus as well as other officers killed in the line of duty, FOX 11 of Los Angeles reported…

“He basically said over and over in the conversation, ‘This is not Trump country, that slogan ‘Make America Great’ is not favorable, popular, within 1,200 square miles,’ that we don’t want Republicans here. I could not believe it,” Mike Randall, vice president of the Fallen Officers Foundation, said, according to FOX 11.

Police Chief Tim Hagel went on from there to tell the organizers that the only thing they could have done to make it worse would be to “invite Dick Cheney and Sarah Huckabee Sanders.’

I realize we’re talking about California here, so you should always expect the worst, but is this really how far we have fallen at this point? This wasn’t a political rally or a fundraiser for candidates from one party or the other. This is a senior cop boycotting a fundraiser for fallen officers. Chief Hagel reportedly told the organizers that the Honor Guard would not be attending and that none of his officers would be allowed to show up.

I couldn’t help but notice one comment left at the original article from someone claiming to be a conservative and a Trump supporter who knows Chief Hagel personally. He describes the Chief as being a generally decent man and “an excellent officer.” The commenter goes on to state that he was at the Helus funeral and he saw the Chief looking “genuinely torn up” over the officer’s death. Maybe there’s more than meets the eye here, though I have a hard time coming up with an alternate explanation.

Perhaps if Hagel gets blistered enough in the public square over this there will still be time for the event to go off as scheduled this Sunday. That is, of course, assuming that he has the capacity to feel enough shame to issue an apology and schedule the Honor Guard to attend. But as of this writing, there are no signs that he’s going to try to walk this PR disaster back yet.

Assuming the Chief sticks to his guns, what are the other options for the organizers? Perhaps they could just rely on other, more sane departments to pitch in the manpower and ask the Trump supporters to drum up additional participants. In the meantime, I suppose the widows and children of the fallen officers will just have to wait.

Breaking: Dallas Officer Who Shot Man In His Own Apartment Found Guilty of Murder

Westlake Legal Group e43682d8-6f84-4bd6-b57b-8f1db7533b6f-620x317 Breaking: Dallas Officer Who Shot Man In His Own Apartment Found Guilty of Murder Texas shooting police murder manslaughter Front Page Stories dallas crime Courts Amber Guyger Allow Media Exception

The former Dallas police officer, Amber Guyger, has been found guilty of the murder of Botham Jean and could be sentenced up to 99 years in prison.

The case began after Guyger walked into what she thought was her apartment and killed Jean by shooting him in the chest, only to find out later that it wasn’t her apartment at all. According to Guyger, she was exhausted after a long day of work and had mistakenly parked on the wrong floor of her apartment building which is unnumbered.

According to ABC News, the jury was tasked to find whether or not Guyger was guilty of manslaughter or murder. The jury decided on the latter:

The Dallas County jury began deliberations Monday afternoon after prosecutors told them in their closing argument that Guyger made a series of “unreasonable decisions” that cost an innocent man his life. Defense attorneys countered that she made “reasonable” mistakes that led her to resort to lethal force because she believed her life was in jeopardy.

The jury came to its decision after asking for clarification on the definition of manslaughter and a clearer explanation of the Castle Doctrine, a legal protection for a homeowner who uses deadly force inside their home against an intruder.

Guyger’s defense team attempted to use the Castle Doctrine, which is similar to Florida’s “stand your ground” law, as a defense, arguing that while she was in the wrong apartment, in her mind she believed she was in her own unit, which was a floor below Jean’s. The prosecution countered that the Castle Doctrine did not apply in the case.

Arguments have already begun appearing on the internet as to whether or not Guyger should have been charged with murder, as according to testimony, there was zero premeditation and Guyger shot Jean purely out of what she thought was self-defense.

It shouldn’t be overlooked that this particular case had, as Ed Morrisey of Hot Air put it, a ton of baggage around it:

The case had a ton of baggage surrounding it — police shootings, race relations, the castle-doctrine issue, and more. The politics of those issues will likely get injected again into the sentencing of Guyger, who might get as little as five years, as noted above. Given her lack of criminal record and lack of criminal intent in this case, I’d expect the judge to go light, perhaps more in line with a manslaughter verdict. If she does, though, there will be a lot of people who will wonder whether Guyger gets mercy for being white, being a cop, or being a white cop. Those questions will not disappear with this verdict.

In fact, if Guyger does get off with a light sentence, it’s likely relations between police and the nation will worsen significantly. Hopefully, this won’t pressure the judge to use a harsher sentence than should be used, but no matter how you slice it, this likely won’t have a decent ending.

Breaking: Jury finds Guyger guilty of murder in wrong-apartment shooting

Westlake Legal Group guyger Breaking: Jury finds Guyger guilty of murder in wrong-apartment shooting The Blog Texas murder cop shooting botham jean Amber Guyger

It took less than two days for a Texas jury to reject Amber Guyger’s defense in the killing of Botham Jean as nothing more than a bad mistake. The former police officer now faces up to 99 years after being convicted of murdering her neighbor, whom she shot after entering his apartment thinking it was her own:

A Texas jury rejected former Dallas police officer Amber Guyers self-defense claims and convicted her on Tuesday of murder in the fatal 2018 shooting of an innocent man eating ice cream in his own home after mistaking his apartment for her own.

The 12-member jury reached its verdict deliberating for less than two days. Guyger stood and stared at the panel as the jury foreperson read the decision of guilty.

The family members of Botham Jean, the neighbor Guyger shot to death on Sept. 6, 2018, burst into tears as the jury granted them a measure of justice.

The 31-year-old Guyger, who was fired from the Dallas Police Department days after the shooting, faces a prison sentence of five to 99 years.

The verdict for murder came as a bit of a surprise, especially after the jury apparently asked for more guidance about the castle doctrine for self-defense shootings. The castle doctrine in Texas law gives people the right to use lethal force to defend themselves or others inside their own home if they feel threatened. The presumption was that the jury was considering Guyger’s testimony that she legitimately thought she was in her own home when she shot Jean. That would indicate against a murder verdict — although perhaps it could have indicated a conviction on a lesser charge, such as negligent homicide.

The jury did have that option. Instead, Guyger got convicted on the top count and now faces a long time behind bars:

Amber Guyger was found guilty of murder on Tuesday for fatally shooting her neighbor, Botham Jean, after thinking he was an intruder when she mistakenly entered his apartment.

She faces a maximum of life in prison.

The jury was tasked with deciding whether or not Guyger, 31, acted reasonably when she used deadly force, and if the prosecution had proven beyond a reasonable doubt that she intentionally killed Jean or if a lesser charge of manslaughter, which involves reckless conduct, was warranted.

Church Leaders Suggest Bonkers Remedy to Knife Violence in England

Knife crime is Britain has hit an all-time high. London’s murder rate was higher than New York’s last year and they’re on track to have even more murders this year than in 2018. Clearly, something needs to be done, and Britain has no shortage of bad ideas. Since 2014, there has been an 80 percent rise in knife crime.

They tried a “Knife Surrender Bin” wherein people could safely turn in their knives. That didn’t work out so well after at least one was broken into and the contents stolen. In Nottinghamshire, police purchased 100 kitchen knives with dull ends and distributed them to homes where there is a high risk for domestic abuse.

Now, church leaders in England are calling for the government to ban pointy knives all together, signing on to a letter which reads:

Historically we needed a point on the end of our knife to pick up food because forks weren’t invented. Now we only need the point to open packets when we can’t be bothered to find the scissors.

A five-year study in Edinburgh found that of the sharp instruments used in homicides, 94 per cent were kitchen knives. Research demonstrates kitchen knives are used in a large percentage of homicides due to their availability and lethal nature.

Criminologists have demonstrated that reducing availability in turn reduces crime.

The UK has worked for the public good by restricting handguns, paracetamol, smoking in public and plastic bags – now it is time to say ‘no bloody point’.

At Rochester Cathedral, a statue called “Knife Angel” (yes, it’s literally an angel made of knives) is currently on display along with a book which people can sign, pledging not to carry knives.

I doubt the people signing this book are the people who were going to go on a stabbing spree. That’s the problem with these initiatives, just like gun control ideas in America.Remember the halcyon days of a couple of years ago when we used to joke that Britain would soon try to ban “assault knives”? Satire has become reality. The problem isn’t with weapons, it’s with people. We need to get to why people are stabbing each other in such drastically larger numbers.

And, maybe it’s just me, but it doesn’t seem that hard to sharpen a knife if you’re determined to use one.

If we spent this much time, money, and energy on making people less murdery, the weapons wouldn’t even be an issue.

In 2008, Casey Anthony was indicted by a grand jury for the first-degree murder of her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee.

Other charges: aggravated child abuse, aggravated manslaughter of a child, and four counts of providing false information to police.

As stated by ABC News:

Casey Anthony’s legal team opened her defense by admitting that she had lied about a babysitter having stolen her daughter Caylee a month earlier, claiming the child had drowned instead.

She was sentenced to four years for lying, but the murder charge was unsuccessful.

I could write much more, but let’s just say many, many, many people believe she was guilty.

Yet, a jury felt otherwise, and now the South Florida resident is reportedly lookin’ to make more.

Babies, that is.

Someone close to Casey told People magazine she “feels like her biological clock is ticking,” and that she wants to “find some meaning in her life.”

She may have been trying to do that last part for a long while — following her 2011 release from jail, she took to the shelter of the Cross Church of Palm City.

It seems a new phase is now in order.

According to the source, Casey’s no longer the “young girl who everyone saw on trial.” She purportedly now wants “marriage, family, the white picket fence. … In some ways, that’s very appealing to Casey. She’d want things to be less dysfunctional than the family she had growing up, but she likes the idea of stability.”

It’s not the first time the notion’s come up in the press.

In a 2017 article by the AP, Casey expressed her desire to have more children.

But she could “never live with” someone being mean to them:

“If I am blessed enough to have another child — if I’d be dumb enough to bring another kid into this world knowing that there’d be a potential that some little snot-nosed kid would then say something mean to my kid — I don’t think I could live with that.”

It would be true even if the jury was right: Many would say she’s proved she can live with quite a lot.

Homeless Man Burned to Death on LA’s Skid Row; Advocate Again Calls for Federal Intervention

Earlier this month, as reported at RedState, longtime Los Angeles homeless advocate Rev. Andy Bales said that the scope of the public health and humanitarian crisis in Los Angeles is now beyond what the state and local government can handle and that only a FEMA-type intervention can solve it now.

(Note, readers, that the paragraph states “FEMA-type” and not FEMA. There seemed to be some confusion in the prior article.)

Bales is sounding the alarm again after a Skid Row fixture, Dwayne Fields, was killed Monday night – burned to death when his tent was set on fire. According to the LA Times:

“Fields, 62, was inside his tent around 11:30 p.m. when, prosecutors allege, another man set his living quarters ablaze. Responding officers found Fields walking down 6th street, his body still burning, according to two law enforcement officials who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the case candidly.”

Deon Joseph witnessed the horrific scene.

In reply to Deon Joseph’s tweet, Bales said that “gang control” of Skid Row has gone on for too long and that more help is needed.

According to an LA Times report, there has been a recent spate of violence around Skid Row.

Four people, including a social worker and a security guard, were shot in San Julian Park last week after a dispute erupted on the sidewalk. Earlier this month, a 59-year-old homeless man was beaten to death with a pipe during a robbery.

Fields’ chronic homelessness exposed flaws in the current bureaucratic response to homelessness in Los Angeles, according to Pete White, Executive Director of Los Angeles Community Action Network (LACAN). Fields had found a home multiple time over the last five years, but wanted to stay with his partner, who had “mobility issues.”

“The problem was his partner who was still out there. They could never find accommodations for a couple, which is one of the big problems with our … system of providing services,” White said. “There are very limited opportunities for single individuals and even less so for partners.”

Another homeless advocate, Gen. Jeff Page, said:

“You’ve got a lot of families that are stuck on the sidewalk because they want to stay together,” he said. “There’s situations like this where, to me, the skid row infrastructure is to blame, because it’s not accommodating the needs of human beings and natural human family systems.”

Fields, a street musician, had a large network of friends in the Skid Row area, and they gathered Wednesday night to celebrate his life and to comfort Valerie Wertlow, the partner he left behind.

The group held a candlelight vigil, walking from LACAN’s office to the corner of Sixth and San Pedro streets, where Wertlow and Fields’ tent had stood.

“What two nights earlier was a crime scene became a living memorial to Fields.

“Alongside Wertlow’s belongings were three pictures of her companion of two decades. Paper printouts of Fields’ smiling face were attached with paper clips to the chain link fence that backstopped her home.

“Speakers were set up. A keyboard was plugged in. And Fields’ friends sang ‘A Change Is Gonna Come,’ ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water” and “Amazing Grace.” Wertlow led the group in singing ‘Lean On Me.’

“Wertlow said mutual attraction helped start their relationship, but it was Fields’ kindness that kept them together.

‘If you needed anything … he had it,” she said. “He had you.’

“And now, Wertlow said, she has him.”

Another homeless man, 38-year-old Jonathan Early, has been charged with capital murder in Fields’ death.

What supposedly compassionate progressives don’t understand is that their “compassionate” policies regarding vagrancy, mental health treatment, and homelessness are leading to record numbers of deaths among the homeless population. In 2018, 918 homeless people died on the streets in Los Angeles County. Of course, this is in addition to the public health crisis and increases in crime fueled by the astronomical rise in the homeless population.

When compassion is misguided, it leads to rule by those with no compassion at all.
