AOC’s Chief of Staff “Resigns,” Comms Director Reassigned

Saikat Chakrabarti and Corbin Trent, who both worked on Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s campaign through Justice Democrats then became staffers in her Capitol Hill office, are “resigning” to work on campaigns during the 2020 election cycle.

Given the ongoing power struggle between AOC’s “Squad” and Speaker Nancy Pelosi, the question is whether the resignations were voluntary or a result of behind-the-scenes pressure from Team Pelosi.

Chakrabarti’s resignation was announced first. Trent, who serves as Ocasio-Cortez’s communications director, told The Intercept:

“Saikat has decided to leave the office of Rep. Ocasio-Cortez to work with New Consensus to further develop plans for a Green New Deal. We are extraordinarily grateful for his service to advance a bold agenda and improve the lives of the people in NY-14. From his co-founding of Justice Democrats to his work on the Ocasio-Cortez campaign and in the official office, Saikat’s goal has always been to do whatever he can to help the larger progressive movement, and we look forward to continuing working with him to do just that.”

Later in the afternoon, Trent’s departure was announced. Ocasio-Cortez, Millennial that she is, texted a statement to The Intercept saying that Trent will be “shifting to our campaign side so we can work on some ambitious comms projects we’ve been looking forward to working on,” and that she had personally asked him to make the move.

Chakrabarti has been as much of a comms firecracker as his boss, often wading into Twitter fights with political opponents and using the medium in a Trump-like fashion to stir the pot between AOC and Pelosi. Exhibit A:

Friday afternoon, Saikat Chakrabarti found out exactly what this legislative mastermind is doing.

Whoops.

With this move, though, Chakrabarti is entirely free to make Pelosi’s life miserable during the 2020 election cycle. Payback’s a b***h. I’m grabbing my popcorn.

Emerson: Dems love AOC Plus 3, other voters … not so much

Westlake Legal Group pelosi-aoc Emerson: Dems love AOC Plus 3, other voters … not so much The Blog squad rashida tlaib Nancy Pelosi Ilhan Omar Emerson poll donald trump Ayanna Pressley AOC Plus 3 Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez 2020 presidential campaign

To be fair, the same Emerson poll shows that the alternative face of the Democratic Party doesn’t fare much better. Among Democrats, both Nancy Pelosi and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez get majorities seeing them favorably, and the other three “Squad” members also get double-digit positive overall favorability ratings. When it comes to the general electorate, however, fortunes reverse sharply for both the Speaker and the Squad:

The Democratic House leadership is struggling with favorability among voters; Speaker Nancy Pelosi has a 28% favorable opinion and a 46% unfavorable opinion. The House “squad,” consisting of Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Tlaib, Illan Omar and Ayanna Pressley share this image problem. Ocasio-Cortez is at 30% favorable and 47% unfavorable, Tlaib is at 26% favorable and 42% unfavorable, Omar is at 25% favorable and 46% unfavorable, and Pressley is at 24% favorable and 35% unfavorable.

Among Democrats, Pelosi is at 51% favorable/18% unfavorable, Ocasio-Cortez is at 54% favorable/17% unfavorable, Omar is at 46% favorable/20% unfavorable, Tlaib is at 48% favorable/17% unfavorable and Pressley is at 44% favorable/14% unfavorable.

That’s, er, quite the disconnect between Democrats and everyone else. Predictably, Republicans strongly disfavor all five, although not entirely equally in Emerson’s crosstabs. Ocasio-Cortez gets the highest unfavorable ratings among Republicans at 75.6%, but Pelosi’s right behind her at 73.0%. Ilhan Omar’s disfavorably viewed by 70.2% of Republicans, while Rashida Tlaib comes in at 67.3% unfavorable and Ayanna Pressley only at 58.5%.

One can expect that kind of reaction from Republican voters, but Democrats also have big issues with independents on the two faces of their party. In that demo, Pelosi gets a 20/50 rating, AOC gets 23/53, Omar’s at 18/52; Tlaib and Pressley are both under a majority for unfavorable rating at 18/44 and 17/35. Unfortunately for all of them, they’re too well known for any serious upside to change those numbers. If there’s a battle for who gets to be the face of the party, Democrats seem destined to lose it no matter which side prevails.

On the other hand, Donald Trump’s not doing too badly, especially by comparison:

President Trump’s job approval improved slightly from early this month and is now at 45% approval and 46% disapproval. His support within the Republican party continues to be strong as Trump dominates a potential primary against former Massachusetts Governor Bill Weld 91% to 8%. The Republican primary poll was n=467 with a +/-4.5%.

In potential head to head matchups, President Trump runs slightly closer to some of his potential Democratic opponents than in previous Emerson polls. Biden and Sanders each lead Trump by 2 points at 51% to 49%, Warren is tied at 50% with Trump, and Harris and Buttigieg both trail by 4 points, 48% to 52%. Spencer Kimball, Director of the Emerson Poll, notes how “this is the second poll where Biden has seen his general election support dip since the first debate. This may have to do with the more liberal positions he took, but in the last 3 weeks his head to head matchups with Trump have tightened 8 points.”

Bear in mind too that this comes from a poll in which only 39% of respondents say they voted for Donald Trump and 40.2% for Hillary Clinton. A little over 20% of respondents claim they voted for someone else (12.2%) or not at all (8.6%), which hardly reflects the likely electorate in 2020 and most certainly doesn’t reflect 2016’s either. Trump may be doing better than this poll indicates, and his recent momentum in the Emerson series suggests that Democrats’ push to the left is paying off for Trump. Small wonder that Trump keeps elevating AOC Plus 3, but if this is reflective of political reality, he might do just as well by targeting Pelosi.

As I wrote on yesterday, Dan Coats is done as Director of National Intelligence. He leaves behind him a wake of questionable actions and stonewalling in the face of legitimate investigative requests. While I’m sure Coats himself is a perfectly nice guy, he wasn’t the right person for that job. The intel agencies did not need a protector to sweep corruption under the rug via strained claims of classification.

Now that Coats is moving on, his replacement has been announced as Rep. John Ratcliffe and that has all the right people gnashing their teeth.

That’s “Fusion Ken,” who’s made a living shilling for the CIA, including helping push stories to cover for their misdeeds. He gained his nickname by relentlessly parroting Fusion GPS talking points (which were obviously being fed to him) for the last three years. Under Obama, he was exposed for working with CIA officials in order to help spin the former President’s drone program, which was famous for it’s collateral damage.

We are just getting started though. There are plenty more of the expected reactions making the rounds.

Rep. Ratcliffe is on the House Intelligence committee, but he’s a “television character” according to Sen. Murphy. For reference, Dan Coats had the same level of experience, serving one term on the Senate Intelligence committee. Why the change in standard?

Here’s Joe Scarborough doing his typical routine, i.e. calling Ratcliffe a “fascist.”

These are our moral and mental betters I’m told. A TV host who cheated on his wife, married his co-host, and now rants about fascism constantly while having no actual idea what fascism is. Joe was also in Congress at one point. I can’t imagine why the country has had the issues it’s had given these people make up most of our “elite.”

But the best one was no doubt John Brennan, who was DNI himself at one point.

Brennan has shown himself to be a rabid partisan. He’s also at the center of the scandal involving the origins and continuation of the Russia investigation, even as the evidence waned. Putting “the nation first” in Brennan’s eyes means running your own unelected fourth branch of government, free from oversight and pesky legalities. Brennan is no doubt sweating at what could be exposed now that Bill Barr is looking into all this. With Ratcliffe as DNI, he can also use his authority to cooperate with Barr in ways Coats refused to do.

Arthur Schwartz chronicled a few more examples of the talking points going out regarding Ratcliffe.

Absolutely amazing how all those politicians and media members suddenly started using the exact same phrase to describe Coats. Just a coincidence, I’m sure of it.

Here’s how I know Ratcliffe is the right man for the job. Because all of the people cited above think he’s not. These are the same people who spent years pushing the Russian collusion hoax and have done everything in their power to cover up for malfeasance within our intelligence community. No one is above the law and that includes bureaucrats hiding behind faux claims of secrecy. DNI needs an outsider. Someone who will come in and stop the games and self-preservation. Ratcliffe looks like a good choice to do just that.

I hate to say that Democrats should have listened to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi instead of the “impeach the mother f***er” squad when it came to kicking Trump out of the White House, but…they should have listened to Pelosi. From the beginning she was trying to dismiss the idea of impeachment, presumably knowing it wouldn’t go anywhere, but Democrats pushed forward anyway.

This push for impeachment has now reduced the momentum of a Democratic party that was already having momentum problems to begin with. Mueller’s Russia investigation was such a flop that it actually made Trump look good and it only made the left and the media look like fools.

And with the left’s only chance to kick Trump out of the White House gone — because they sure as hell don’t have a chance in 2020 — they pushed the public too far on a slim chance. Now the public is over it.

According to a Rasmussen poll, U.S. voters aren’t just ditching the idea of impeachment, a majority still don’t believe he’ll lose 2020 either:

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey finds that only 11% of Likely U.S. Voters believe Trump will be impeached before serving his first full term in office. This finding has been trending down from a high of 29% when Rasmussen Reports first asked the question in late December 2017.

Little changed from early March are the 46% who say Trump is more likely to be reelected in 2020 and 33% who think his defeat by the Democratic presidential nominee is the more likely outcome next year.

Even if Democrats suddenly put all of their time and effort into supporting 2020 candidates, they’d have to begin generating momentum from a virtual stand-still. You’d essentially have to reintroduce the candidates who have released their platforms to almost no attention at all from the media.

Former VP Joe Biden rolled out his presidential platform and the media was so preoccupied with the Mueller investigations that no one even noticed. To be clear, Biden is Trump’s number one threat — and I’m using “threat” for lack of a better term — and the Democrats aren’t giving him the time of day.

Even if they do manage to get the hype machine for the 2020 candidates back up, it’s likely not going to be enough to really bring it to Trump. They know this, which is why they leaned so heavily on impeachment. If they had listened to Pelosi, they may not have stood a chance, but at least it would have been a better chance that may have opened them up for a miracle.

The Democrat run House continues to flail about on impeachment, largely because they know most of the country doesn’t want it. But they want to have their cake and eat it to, as I chronicled last week, which means not actually voting to impeach but using committees to demand judges give them access as if articles of impeachment had passed. Whether they’ll find a judge willing to undermine legal standards to such a gross extent has yet to be determined.

The one leading this charge is Rep. Jerry Nadler. Famous for wearing his pants so high that he has to unzip to speak, he appeared on the Sunday shows yesterday to do his usual song and dance. That led to this confusing, irrational diatribe that completely gives the game away.

You see, Nadler absolutely, 100% knows that Trump is guilty and has violated the law “six ways from Sunday,” yet he needs more evidence before even taking the first step in impeachment. Wait, what?

To be clear, the actual trial in an impeachment happens in the Senate. The purpose of impeachment in the House is to act like a grand jury, recommending indictment. If Nadler has proof so damning that he can claim definitely that Trump has committed crimes six ways to Sunday, why does he need more evidence? What’s stopping him from publicly calling for the support he needs to pass articles of impeachment?

None of this makes sense and it’s not supposed to. The Democrats are scared to death of public opinion turning against them further, as impeachment is deeply unpopular among the American people. Nadler wants to go on the Sunday shows and scream about crimes being committed while not actually having to put his money where his mouth is. He’d be content to just “investigating” until the 2020 election because the assumption is that this can be used as an election bludgeon.

The problem for Democrats is that their base isn’t going to accept that.

Eventually, this will boil over. Nadler can only give so many bizarre, illogical rants trying to explain why Trump is Hitler but he won’t impeach. Pelosi has the most vocal parts of his caucus running to the cameras daily demanding impeachment. Noway does the dam hold for another year.

Democratic party leadership created this monster, thinking they could control it. They can’t and it’s going to backfire on them in a big way.

Bern Out: Right After He Condemns Trump’s Baltimore Slam, Uncle Bernie’s Seen Doing the Same Thing

Westlake Legal Group darth-3830731_1280-620x414 Bern Out: Right After He Condemns Trump’s Baltimore Slam, Uncle Bernie’s Seen Doing the Same Thing white house washington D.C. victor blackwell Uncategorized racism Race Politics Partisanship Nancy Pelosi Media Hypocrisy Front Page Stories Featured Story donald trump democrats Bernie Sanders baltimore Allow Media Exception

One thing that makes politics so absurd — and partisan politics so transparent — is hypocrisy.

Which is to say disingenuousness. Which is to say, in a sense, lying for political gain.

Example: Nancy Pelosi called Trump’s wall “an immorality,” even though she voted — as did Chuck Schumer and Barack Obama — for 2006’s Fence Act (here). Not to mention the fact that the goob has a wall around her own property (here).

We also sometimes see the double standard among media, when one party’s called out on something for which the other is given a pass.

Along those lines, witness a Democrat dumping on The Donald over his remarks decrying the “infestation” of rodents in Baltimore. CNN anchor Victor Blackwell lost it over the comments on the air (here). It’s a must-see.

Since, a video’s surfaced revealing the city’s Democratic mayor lamenting the stench of dead rats (here), and now we’re on to the curious case of Uncle Bernie.

On Sunday, Bern was asked about Trump’s controversial tweets.

CNN’s Jake Tapper — who’s surprised me previously with his pressing of Democrats for clear answers — posed this to Sen. Sanders:

“I know you want to talk about issues, but I do also want to talk about what President Trump said about your former colleague in the House Elijah Cummings and his district being ‘a disgusting rat and rodent infested mess that no human being would want to live in.’ What’s your response?”

The Democratic Socialist politicked himself silly:

“Jake, it’s unbelievable that we have a president of the United States who attacks American cities, who attacks Americans, who attacks somebody who’s a friend of mine. Elijah Cummings is one of the most decent and outstanding members of the House of Representatives. He fights every day to improve life in his community.

“I do find it interesting that, when we have rural Republican districts where life expectancy is going down, where downtowns are boarded up, where people are struggling – and people are struggling in rural America. They’re struggling in urban America. They’re struggling in suburban America.

“Our job is to bring people together, to improve life for all people, not to have a racist president who attacks people because they are African Americans. That is a disgrace. And that is why we’re going to defeat this president.”

‘Nough said.

Now take a swig of reality’s dose. Here’s the same man in 2015:

And that’s how it’s done.

Pelosi’s Nightmare Advances As Nearly Half Of House Democrats Support Impeachment

After more than a decade leading House Democrats, Pelosi has faced demands from some lawmakers for leadership changes, particularly after Democrats failed to win back House control last year. (AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite, File)

To quote the philosopher Luke Cage: Sweet Christmas.

A host of Congressional Democrats have joined the movement to impeach President Donald Trump, bringing the total number to 107 Democrats. That means we’re just 11 shy of half the caucus being in favor of something the leaders of the party are desperately trying to avoid.

It appears that Pelosi, in an effort to appease the rank-and-file, she is giving her consent to another Judiciary Committee plot to extend the life of the Mueller investigation.

Pelosi’s resistance to an impeachment inquiry is not likely to be vulnerable to the math of the Democratic Caucus — she has also argued that such a move would be unnecessarily divisive and likely to fail in the Republican-controlled Senate, strengthening Trump’s hand ahead of the 2020 election. Rather, she has urged a focus on the House’s myriad investigations of Trump’s conduct, business relationships and personal finances — some of which are tied up in court battles with Trump’s personal lawyers. Those probes, she has said, could form a more complete picture before considering impeachment.

But Pelosi on Friday also endorsed a new Judiciary Committee effort to go to court and seek access to Mueller’s secret grand jury evidence. In its petition to a federal judge in Washington, D.C., which was issued by the House general counsel, the committee argued that it was already investigating whether to recommend articles of impeachment against Trump.

However, that’s all it is for her. It’s appeasement to try and keep them happy for a little while longer and keep them from pushing for something she believes will be disastrous, and it more than likely would be.

Impeachment sends political drama into overdrive, which in turn further polarizes the country. The constant negative press on both sides of the aisle will drive the base loyalists to the polls, but will probably keep moderate turnout low. In her opinion, she could bring moderates over by positioning her party as the moderate party and drawing the moderate vote to them.

But the rank-and-file in the House are getting restless. They have learned the wrong lessons from 2016 and still believe that the best way to defeat Trump is to swing too far in the other direction. Trump was himself a reaction to Barack Obama, who actively sought to alienate conservative voters and pushed for an agenda that he was rebuked on in multiple elections.

Pelosi and her allies seem to recognize that. The rest of the Democrats do not. They instead believe that an impeachment inquiry is the best way to go forward, as it would allow for them to fundraise… and that’s about it. It won’t result in anything meaningful, and they know it.

But, hey! It’s good to keep the dream alive.

Democrats who support an inquiry have also privately argued that reaching a majority of the caucus would be a turning point in their efforts, coaxing more reluctant lawmakers off the sidelines and ramping up pressure on Democratic leaders.

Though Mueller at times struggled with his command of his report last week, his testimony has proven to be a flashpoint for Democrats teetering on the brink of backing an impeachment inquiry. He affirmed that his 22-month investigation uncovered that the president had repeatedly tried to obstruct his inquiry, and he noted that Trump could theoretically be vulnerable to prosecution after his term ends. Democrats have pointed to both exchanges as they’ve announced their positions.

This is probably the best part because these Democrats still look at the Mueller hearing as one filled with new revelations, whereas the majority of the people who watched (admittedly, very few) and a vast number of prominent media figures agree it produced nothing new or exciting.

These are politicians who are banking on this strategy working, and they are so desperate to see it work that they will pretend there is a there there. They think they can win an optics game with this, but it’s going to produce nothing for them.

They’ll find that out the hard way come 2020.

Trump Calls Dem Rep. A ‘Brutal Bully,’ Says His District Is FAR WORSE And More Dangerous Than Southern Border

In a predawn twitterstorm, President Trump had harsh words for House Oversight Committee Chairman Elijah Cummings (D-MD). Trump tweeted: “Rep. Elijah Cummings has been a brutal bully, shouting and screaming at the great men & women of Border Patrol about conditions at the Southern Border, when actually his Baltimore district is FAR WORSE and more dangerous.”

In the next tweet, Trump wrote: “His district is considered the Worst in the USA. As proven last week during a Congressional tour, the Border is clean, efficient & well run, just very crowded. Cummings’ District is a disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess. If he spent more time in Baltimore, maybe he could help clean up this very dangerous & filthy place.”

Finally, he wrote: “Why is so much money sent to the Elijah Cummings district when it is considered the worst run and most dangerous anywhere in the United States. No human being would want to live there. Where is all this money going? How much is stolen? Investigate this corrupt mess immediately!”

Cummings is known for his frequent criticism of the President. Recently, Cummings said the treatment of migrant children at the border facilities “is government-sponsored child abuse…on a grand scale…We have seen cases where the administration has deported parents without their children and still, to this day, have not reunited those families.”

A recent DHS Inspector General’s report told of “dangerous overcrowding” and “prolonged detention of children and adults” at some of these facilities.

At a committee hearing last week, Cummings discussed these findings with Homeland Security Secretary Kevin McAleenan. Cummings said, “You feel like you’re doing a great job, right? What does that mean? What does that mean? When a child is sitting in their own feces, can’t take a shower? Come on, man. What’s that about? None of us would have our children in that position. They are human beings.”

McAleenan defended the work DHS has done and invited Cummings to see for himself that conditions were improving.

Cummings fired back at Trump. He tweeted, “Mr. President, I go home to my district daily. Each morning, I wake up, and I go and fight for my neighbors. It is my constitutional duty to conduct oversight of the Executive Branch. But, it is my moral duty to fight for my constituents.”

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other House Democrats defended Cummings by tweet.

Trump was also angry about the House Oversight Committee’s vote to subpoena records of White House officials (including those of Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner) and aide’s use of social media for government business use. In a committee hearing on Thursday, Cummings said, “There are serious questions about this White House’s use of personal email and text accounts. We must issue these subpoenas to get our answers.”

I posted about Republican committee member Chip Roy’s angry outburst after the vote had been taken at that meeting. He berated committee Democrats for their “fishing expedition” and for neglecting their responsibility to the American people as they try to bring President Trump down, then stormed out of the room.

Following the debacle of Wednesday’s Mueller hearings, which was really a watershed moment for the impeachment movement, President Trump has decided to go on the offense.

Democrats, beware.

As has been signaled for a while, the Democrats in the House want to have their cake and eat it to on impeachment.

They don’t want to actually impeach Donald Trump because that’s wildly unpopular. Instead, they want to wink and nod while demanding judges give them access to information as if impeachment had happened so they can drag this out until 2020.

That’s the plan Jerry Nadler and company are moving forward with now and this was laid out in a bizarre press conference yesterday.

The technical absurdity of “filing an application” aside, here’s what Nadler is trying to do.

As a major next step, Chairman Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., and the committee filed a petition in D.C. federal court on Friday to obtain grand jury materials from the former special counsel’s investigation. The petition claims the panel needs the information in order to determine whether to recommend articles of impeachment, in an attempt to give the request more weight in the eyes of the court.

“To meaningfully consider whether to exercise this authority — as well as to exercise its other pressing legislative and oversight responsibilities — the Committee must obtain evidence and testimony in a timely manner,” the filing reads.

Fresh off the disaster that was Robert Mueller’s testimony, Nadler has now decided to take the next step in this ridiculous game. Namely, he’s going to ask the court to make an exception in the laws dealing with grand jury testimony. Keep in mind that such exceptions are granted at such a low volume as to be almost non-existent historically. There are almost no legitimate reasons to expose people who gave grand jury testimony and political food fighting is certainly not one of those reasons.

The law protects grand jury testimony for a very important reason. If the guarantees of confidentiality are no longer there, the grand jury system becomes pointless and it encourages a lack of cooperation. This is especially true given that the mere presence of a person testifying can be used to smear them, even if they’ve technically done nothing wrong.

What Nadler is trying to do sets an awful precedent.

This is exactly right. The access Nadler seeks is reserved for actual impeachment proceedings (and even then, maybe not). There is no precedent, nor logic to opening an “impeachment inquiry” within a committee and then suddenly being given access to everything as if articles of impeachment had passed. You either pass articles of impeachment or you don’t.

If a judge rubber stamps this, it opens the door for massive abuse, not just that which will take place under Nadler, but also in future administrations. Don’t like who was elected president? Just open an impeachment “inquiry” in a committee and demand all their personal information. There’s got to be something there, right? And we just need to be sure of course.

That’s essentially what Democrats are doing. They have no real evidence of high crimes and misdemeanors. If they did, they’d have passed articles of impeachment already and we’d be halfway through a trial in the Senate by now. They can’t though, so they want to subvert the system entirely, impeaching while not actually impeaching so as to not rile public opinion against them.

Republicans are already speculating this gambit won’t work.

This description, though, prompted confusion on Capitol Hill. Republicans on the same committee insisted that the House has not entered a formal impeachment inquiry, meaning Democrats aren’t entitled to the grand jury material they seek.

“The House is either formally in impeachment proceedings, which involve both an impeachment inquiry and consideration of articles of impeachment, or we are not. It’s a binary issue,” a GOP aide said in an email.

House Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Doug Collins, R-Ga., blasted Nadler’s move to “sue for grand jury material to which they have no right.”

“Chairman Nadler’s legal action here is sure to fail, weakening Congress’s ability to conduct oversight now and into the future. If my colleagues want grand jury information, they should propose legislation allowing Congress to access it,” he said in a statement. “Democrats want to convince their base they’re still wedded to impeachment even after this week’s hearing, but a baseless legal claim is an odd way to show that.”

Whatever judge gets this, regardless of who appointed him or her, needs to put politics aside and slap this down hard. Ruling in favor of Democrats here would open a Pandora’s box of corruption. If Democrats want special access to materials, they need to impeach the President. Period. If they can’t do that, tough luck. They don’t get to change the rules just because they are scared of public opinion. The case law does not support them getting their way here and it shouldn’t be ignored just because Trump is president. That has become all too common and it’s a blight on our judicial system.

Hopefully, cooler heads prevail here in court, even if it means the Supreme Court having to step in eventually. The left hating Donald Trump is not a valid reason to destroy all constitutional and legal norms.

What happened at the Pelosi-AOC summit?

Westlake Legal Group pelosi-aoc What happened at the Pelosi-AOC summit? The Blog summit Nancy Pelosi AOC Plus 3 Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

Was it really a “nice meeting,” as Nancy Pelosi put it, or was it more of a let’s-get-the-command-lines-straight showdown with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez? It certainly started off as all smiles:

How did it end up? If you believe Pelosi, somewhat generically:

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is downplaying any differences with high-profile progressive lawmaker Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, saying she had a “nice meeting” Friday with the social media dynamo who’s made some tart observations about the Democratic leadership team.

Pelosi told reporters that “I don’t think we have that many differences” despite some sharp words back and forth recently with “AOC,” as she’s referred to by her 4.9 million followers on Twitter.

The Associated Press took note of one surprising outcome afterward:

Ocasio-Cortez avoided reporters after her meeting with Pelosi.

Really? That would be a first. Normally, one of the most dangerous places to be is between Ocasio-Cortez and any opportunity for self-promotion. That, in fact, is one of the problems that Pelosi has had with AOC Plus 3 — their self-promotion at the expense of a cohesive caucus message. It’s not the only problem, of course; Ocasio-Cortez’ work with Justice Democrats to find primary challengers against Pelosi’s allies is another, as is AOC’s chief of staff Saikat Chakrabarti, who founded the group.

After Wednesday’s impeachment-advocate debacle, it looks more like Pelosi’s looking to settle all of the accounts. Her response to a question from CBS’ Nancy Cordes about the meeting at Pelosi’s daily presser didn’t exactly suggest that this was the beginning of a beautiful friendship. It’s all about “respect” as much as it is “diversity,” in what sounds like a pointed message to grandstanding first-termers going on television to slag her:

Cordes scoffs when Pelosi says there wasn’t any “hatchet” to bury, noting that Ocasio-Cortez ripped her publicly. Pelosi stepped carefully around the point:

“The congresswoman is a very gracious member of congress so we had a very positive conversation about our districts and how we represent them,” she added. “We have been engaged in differences in opinion in our caucus and that is a good thing.”

Cordes later pressed the speaker about familial infighting.

“It’s like you’re in a family and in a family you have your differences, but you’re still a family. Does your family always agree on everything?” Pelosi asked Cordes.

“Sometimes we have meetings to clear the air,” Cordes replied.

“You have meetings in your family? Oh my god, well you may be a model for us all,” Pelosi retorted.

That beats Pelosi’s reaction immediately after the meeting, which also suggested that it wasn’t all sweetness and light (via Townhall):

If Ocasio-Cortez is avoiding reporters, that’s at least a gain for Pelosi. But it certainly would have been interesting to have been a fly on the wall for that tète-a-tète. If AOC puts out a “help wanted” sign for her chief of staff position, as several in her caucus want, then perhaps this might not have been just a confab between pals.
