Caught: NY Times Conveniently Runs Interference for Hillary Clinton in Her Battle With Tulsi Gabbard

Last week, Bonchie wrote about about how failed 2016 Democratic nominee for president Hillary Clinton told former Obama adviser David Plouffe in a podcast last week that Rep. Tulsi Gabbard and 2016 Green party nominee Jill Stein were both “Russian assets.”

Prior to making that claim, Clinton also asserted that “I’m not making any predictions but I think they’ve got their eye on somebody who is currently in the Democratic primary and are grooming her to be the third-party candidate,” which was a clear reference to Gabbard even though she did not mention the 2020 presidential candidate by name during the podcast.

It was widely reported Friday morning by multiple journalists on Twitter, including the Washington Post’s Aaron Blake, that the “they” Hillary referred to were the Russians. Here’s what Blake and others tweeted:

Clinton’s spokesman Nick Merrill was even asked about her comments to confirm it was Gabbard who she was referring to. He did:

In addition to an opinion piece on Hillary vs. Tulsi, the New York Times also published a straight news (heh) report about Clinton’s remarks and initially reported that Hillary was referring to the Russians as being the ones who were “grooming” Gabbard to be a third party candidate.

But sometime between last Friday and Tuesday, they changed their story, and now report it was “Republicans” Hillary meant, not the Russians. How do we know this? Through Merrill, in a series of tweets, the first two of which note the so-called error and correction:

Because I don’t trust anything that comes from Merrill or anyone else on Team Clinton, I searched for a transcript so I could read what she said in context. Politifact, thankfully, had it:

Plouffe: “But one of the reasons [Trump] was able to win is the third party vote.”

Clinton: “Right.”

Plouffe: “And what’s clear to me, you mentioned, you know, he’s going to just lie. … He’s going to say, whoever our nominee is, ‘will ban hamburgers and steaks and you can’t fly and infanticide’ and people believe this. So, how concerned are you about that? For me, so much of this does come down to the win number. If he has to get 49 or even 49.5 in a bunch of…”

Clinton: “He can’t do that.”

Plouffe: “…which I don’t think he can… So he’s going to try and drive the people not to vote for him but just to say, ‘you know, you can’t vote for them either.’ And that seems to be, I think, to the extent that I can define a strategy, their key strategy right now.”

Clinton: “Well, I think there’s going to be two parts and I think it’s going to be the same as 2016: ‘Don’t vote for the other guy. You don’t like me? Don’t vote for the other guy because the other guy is going to do X, Y and Z or the other guy did such terrible things and I’m going to show you in these, you know, flashing videos that appear and then disappear and they’re on the dark web, and nobody can find them, but you’re going to see them and you’re going to see that person doing these horrible things.’”

“They’re also going to do third party again. And I’m not making any predictions but I think they’ve got their eye on somebody who is currently in the Democratic primary and are grooming her to be the third party candidate. She’s the favorite of the Russians. They have a bunch of sites and bots and other ways of supporting her so far, and that’s assuming Jill Stein will give it up. Which she might not, ’cause she’s also a Russian asset.”

Plouffe: (Inaudible)

Clinton: “Yeah, she’s a Russian asset, I mean, totally.

“And so, they know they can’t win without a third party candidate and, so, I don’t know who it’s going to be it but I will guarantee you they’ll have a vigorous third party challenge in the key states that they most need it.”

Understandably, it’s hard to tell whether Hillary is talking about Trump and Republicans or the Russians when she refers to “they” because she uses the terms interchangeably often, but it simply does not make sense that Merrill confirmed Friday she was talking about Russians grooming Gabbard but then rushed to Twitter a few days later to correct the record.

In fact, the “correction” is just a little too convenient for my liking. It’s almost as though it was a coordinated effort. Considering how closely the Clinton camp monitors the media, it is not outside the realm of possibility at all that they pitched a fit to the NYT to the point the paper changed it on their behalf.

Just for purposes of discussion, let’s say Hillary Clinton really was referring to Republicans as “grooming” Gabbard.

1) It’s still highly insulting to Gabbard. Even though she doesn’t view Republicans as the enemy, she’s also a proud Democrat and by suggesting Republicans were “grooming” her to be a third party candidate means Clinton thinks Gabbard, who served her country in Iraq, would sell out her party and what she stands for in order to give Trump the advantage in the general election.

2) Plus, Clinton, who is delusional enough to think Trump and Republicans colluded with the Russians in 2016, thinks they are still “working together” now to “steal” 2020. So by saying Republicans are “grooming” Gabbard, she’s saying Gabbard is working with people who allegedly are getting assistance from a foreign country to “steal” our elections.

The “correction” the paper made does not change the despicable nature of what she said.

3) Hillary Clinton unquestionably called Gabbbard a “Russian asset.” That’s just as disgusting.

The bottom line is that Democrats including Hillary Clinton have banged the “Russia” drum since 2016. The only difference now is that she’s implicating members of her own party in some supposed new Republican scheme to steal 2020.

Someone needs to stage an intervention with her. Seriously. This is just nuts.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez built her House campaign and now her Congressional career off of embracing identity politics and complaining about the supposed “privilege” white men enjoy in America today. She has frequently talked about how we need to turn the country away from the policies of “old white men” and instead embrace the socialist ideas of woke progressive women of color like herself.

Considering their past history (she volunteered for his campaign in 2016, they’ve bonded since she was elected), it wasn’t a big shock that AOC endorsed Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) for president over the weekend. But it still left some people wondering how a young socialist Democrat who constantly complains about old white guys running the country and how America needs more minority representation would, ya know, pick an old white guy over the female candidates in the race, including Sen. Elizabeth Warren, who some say is Sanders’ ideological twin.

One such person wondering was CBS News correspondent Nikole Killion, who went off script by asking AOC this very uncomfortable (for her) question during an exclusive interview done after she endorsed Sanders Saturday:

“As a woman of color, why back an old white guy? And is this the future of the party?” asked Killion after Ocasio-Cortez spoke at the Sanders rally in Queens, N.Y.

“I’m actually very excited about this partnership because it shows what we have to do in our country is that we have to come together across race, across gender, across generation,” Ocasio-Cortez added, while sitting next to Sanders.

Watch:

It was actually a very un-AOC answer, because for AOC and company, everything – and I do mean everything – is viewed through the PWOC/PPOC prism. For example, if you criticize a progressive man of color, you’re automatically branded a racist. If you disagree with a progressive woman of color, you’re automatically branded a sexist and a racist, because there are no legitimate criticisms of PWOC according to the AOCs of the world.

But apparently endorsing an old, privileged white guy over minority female candidates is okay because he also happens to be a socialist.

I categorically reject identity politics, and have no problem with a woman or a woman of color or whatever endorsing the male candidate of her choice. That’s true “freedom of choice” and not the selective style “freedom of choice” AOC and her comrades promote when it’s politically convenient.

Bernie Sanders’ female supporters were dragged through the mud by “feminists” in 2016 for supporting his candidacy over Hillary Clinton’s, and women who are choosing to endorse him now over Warren, Harris, and the other female candidates are getting similar treatment.

So while I don’t endorse identity politics as a matter of principle, I’m still sitting back munching on popcorn watching these same women getting hoisted by their own petards. Y’all built this. Now you can own it.

Trump’s Meeting With Democrat Leadership Ends Pretty Much As You Guessed It Would

President Trump met with Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer, and Steny Hoyer this afternoon on the subject of Syria. You didn’t need much imagination to see how this particular movie was going to end. Like the last several meetings between Trump and Pelosi, it broke down in recriminations. Allegedly, and I say that because the only people talking now are the Democrats and they aren’t terribly trustworty, Trump called Pelosi a “third rate politician” and Pelosi resurrected the scurrilous falsehood disproven by Robert Mueller that Trump is doing Putin’s bidding. (By the way, if your only foreign policy objective is to do something to stymie another country, you don’t have a policy, you have a middle school mean girls clique.) When the meeting broke up, Trump promised to “see [them] at the polls.”

Now both sides are engaged in trolling.

In her statement, on the video, Pelosi claims Trump was rattled by the House vote to disapprove of his action on Syria (that and about $7 will get you coffee at Starbucks).

Trump took to Twitter

Pelosi is using one of the image Trump released of the meeting as her Twitter cover image.

Just some thoughts:

  • There is little doubt in my mind that Trump was probably torqued by the House vote. He had no reason to be because it was obvious how that was going to go.
  • A case might be made that Trump was trying to provoke Pelosi into an impeachment vote because it is easier to fight something than nothing. But I thing the best explanation is that Trump and Pelosi detest one another and can’t be bothered to put on a facade of comity.
  • I’m not really certain why Trump agreed to meet with the Democrat leadership on this subject. It isn’t like they are going to do anything but screw with him. My guess is that one of the big brain thinkers in the White House thought it would be a great show of something or another if Trump could be seen doing business with the vicious harridan who has spent three years trying to delegitimize his presidency. I hope that person is unemployed tonight.
  • Neither side came out of this looking great, but neither was hurt in general and both sides gave their partisans some red meat.
  • As long as impeachment is on the table, there is no good reason for Trump or his White House to have any dealings with Pelosi at all.
  • If there was an upside to this, it was Trump sending a message to the executive branch that you deal with House Democrats at your peril.

Last week, I wrote about how Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-NY) absolutely ripped House Intel Chair Adam Schiff and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi over what he called a “clown show” impeachment inquiry process where selective bits of information were allegedly being leaked to the media by Democrats in order to paint a distorted picture of what had been said behind closed doors so far.

Zeldin, the ranking member on the Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee, continued hammering this point home over the weekend in several interviews, including one he did on ABC Sunday with Jonathan Karl.

During the interview, Zeldin blasted the fact that Pelosi still refuses to hold an impeachment inquiry vote on the House floor, which would give Republicans subpoena power and President Trump’s legal team the ability to do things like cross-examine witnesses.

He also pointed out that Schiff was trying to get Americans drunk on an “impeachment cocktail”, which he said contained three ingredients.

Here’s a partial transcript:

KARL: So you’re OK with all — all the transcripts coming out? You want to see Fiona Hill, who’s testifying next week, you want to see all — all the people that the administration does not want to testify, you want those transcripts to be out?

ZELDIN: No, the president wants there to be a process. The president is saying that there should be a vote for an impeachment inquiry, as you just pointed out with Congressman Himes, there should be a process. The minority parties should have subpoena power. The president should have counsel present. He should be able to cross-exam witnesses; he should be able to present evidence. There should be a process, but instead what Adam Schiff wants is to get United States of America drunk on his favorite cocktail. There’s three ingredients. One is cherry-picking leaks, second is withholding facts, and three is just outright lying. I mean he is — he lied about his whistleblower contact, he lied when he gave his opening statement in front of the Acting Director of National Intelligence, he lied when he said that President Trump requested President Zelensky to, quote, manufacture dirt. Now, if we all had Ambassador Volker’s testimony, we would know that that’s not true. We would also know that it obliterated the quid pro quo charge, that fairytale, that President Trump supposedly demanded that there would be an investigation open against the Bidens in order to get aid from the United States to Ukraine.

KARL: It’s clear that he brought this up exactly when the issue with aid to Ukraine was raised.

ZELDIN: No — well let’s — this, what Ambassador Volker’s transcript would show you substantively.

Zeldin also stated that contra to media/Democrat talking points that suggest otherwise, the assertions Trump made about Joe Biden and Hunter Biden as it relates to the Ukrainian prosecutor and Burisma Holdings have not been debunked.

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio’s wife is spearheading a “She Built NYC” memorial featuring statues of women who made the city what it is today.

The project — which was initially intended to involve only a single sculpture — was announced in June of last year, and the public was asked to vote on which woman would be immortalized.

A committee ended up expanding the vision and picking seven.

The transgender world is also being represented, as among the chosen are two men.

The ladies are as follows, courtesy of Women.NYC:

Shirley Chisholm (1924-2005) — The first African-American woman elected to Congress, she represented New York’s 12th Congressional District for seven terms from 1969-1983.

Billie Holliday (1915-1959) — One of the most famous jazz vocalists of all time, Holliday was discovered at the age of 18 in a Harlem jazz club. She passed away in 1959 after a long battle with substance abuse.

Helen Rodriguez-Trias (1929-2001) — Dr. Rodriguez-Trias was a pediatrician and abortion-rights activist. She was also the first Latina woman to be elected president of the American Public Health Association.

Katherine Walker (1838-1941) — A diminutive German immigrant who stood just four feet and ten inches, barely tipping the scales at 100 pounds, took over running the Robbins Reef lighthouse when her second husband passed away. She continued his duties for nearly three decades, sometimes rowing out into rough water to pull shipwrecked sailors from the waves.

Elizabeth Jennings Graham (1827-1901) — Known to some as NYC’s Rosa Parks, Graham famously refused to get off a “whites only” streetcar in 1854. She was removed by police, but later won a lawsuit against the company along with $255 in damages. She also founded and ran the first kindergarten for black children out of her own home until she passed away in 1901.

One male recipient of the city’s veneration is Marsha P. Johnson ((1945-1992):

Marsha P. Johnson was an activist whose involvement in the 1969 Stonewall Riots helped pave the way toward trans acceptance. Born in Elizabeth, NJ, Johnson moved to New York City after high school with just $15 and a bag of clothes. Though she struggled with homelessness, Johnson devoted her life to advocating for gay and transgender street youth, sex workers and people with HIV/AIDS, co-founding STAR (Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries) with her good friend Sylvia Rivera. Towering in red plastic heels and floral wigs, Johnson was a captivating figure who caught the attention of Andy Warhol, who photographed her. She will share a monument in Greenwich Village with Sylvia Rivera.

Here’s more about Marsha, from CNN:

Johnson was a drag performer and a sex worker; she was often homeless and lived with mental illness. Her body was found in the Hudson River in 1992, and the circumstances of her death remain unclear. New York police ruled the death a suicide and didn’t investigate.
She is remembered as one of the most significant activists for transgender rights, although the term “transgender” wasn’t commonly used during her lifetime. Johnson identified as a “transvestite,” gay and a drag queen, and used she/her pronouns.

“She was the ultimate survivor,” said Elle Hearns, a human rights activist who created an institute bearing Johnson’s name.

“I don’t think Marsha has left anything behind besides the permission for us all to be free.”

Lastly, Sylvia Rivera (1951-2002) will be honored:

Sylvia Rivera was a pioneering transgender advocate whose radical activism was inspired by her own life. Abandoned by her father at birth and orphaned at age 3 when her mother committed suicide, Rivera was raised in NYC by her Venezuelan grandmother. She left home at age 11 to escape criticism of her gender-defying ways and lived on the streets, surviving as a sex worker. Following her involvement in the 1969 Stonewall riots, she and her longtime friend Marsha P. Johnson cofounded STAR (Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries) to help homeless youth. Rivera also fought for transgender legal protections in New York City and Albany. She will share a monument in Greenwich Village with Marsha P. Johnson.

Biography.com offers this about Sylvia:

Defiant of labels, Rivera confounded many in the mainstream gay liberation movement because of her own diverse and complex background: She was poor, trans, a drag queen, a person of color, a former sex worker, and someone who also experienced drug addiction, incarceration and homelessness. For all of these reasons, Rivera fought for not only gay and trans rights but also racial, economic and criminal justice issues.

Initially in public support of the Gay Rights Bill, Rivera felt betrayed when the bill — which took 17 years to become New York law in 1986 — ultimately excluded the rights of the transgender community.

“They have a little backroom deal without inviting Miss Sylvia and some of the other trans activists to this backroom deal with these politicians. The deal was, ‘You take them out, we’ll pass the bill,’” Rivera explained at an LGBT talk in 2001.

Together, Marsha and Sylvia co-founded STAR, the Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries, which provided housing to homeless transvestite youth.

According to then-Deputy Mayor Alicia Glen, who announced the “She Built NYC” project last year along with First Lady Chirlaine McCray, previously there were 22 monuments to men in Central Park yet only one to a woman — Alice in Wonderland.

“Not even a real woman, you know?” she marveled. “Give me a break! Enough is enough!”

When New Yorkers voted on the one woman to honor, the overwhelming winner was Catholic Saint Frances Cabrini.

From Time:

On March 31, 1889, Mother Frances Xavier Cabrini, a tiny, frail nun, daughter of a Lombard farmer, arrived in New York with six’ members of the order she had formed, the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Pope Leo XIII had sent her to work among the Italian immigrants who were finding neither a welcome nor prosperity in the New World, and worse, in the eyes of the Church, were losing their faith and piety.

Mother Cabrini and her six set to work in the New York slums. To support their first orphanage they begged their way through the squalor of Little Italy, later managed to set up a tiny, ill-equipped hospital for the Italian poor. Though funds came mostly in small change, Mother Cabrini‘s masterful will again & again overcame obstacles that seemed insuperable. For the next 28 years she traveled indefatigably, setting up schools, hospitals, orphanages and novitiates in Chicago, New Orleans, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Seattle, Denver and other U.S. cities. … She was an American after America’s heart, and in 1909, in her 59th year, she became a U.S. citizen.

Those in charge declined to include her.

Frances is the patron saint of immigrants.

The Washington Times reported earlier this week about a recent visit Squad leader and admitted socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) made to a DC salon that ended up being pricey:

The self-declared socialist, who regularly rails against the rich and complains about the cost of living inside the Beltway, spent nearly $300 on her hairdo at a pricey salon she frequents in downtown Washington, The Washington Times has learned.

The New York Democrat ventured into Last Tangle Salon on 19th Street Northwest last month and shelled out $80 for a haircut and $180 for lowlights, according to sources familiar with the salon.

A 20% tip would have added $52 to the bill.

The article also noted less expensive places she could have chosen to have her hair done.

There was a predictable debate on social media as to whether or not this was even newsworthy. But given her “spread the wealth” philosophy, her frequent rants against “privileged” people, and how often she complains about DC living expenses and paying off her student loan debt, I think the story was totally worth covering:

“AOC is the Eva Peron of American politics. She preaches socialism while living the life of the privileged,” said Richard Manning, president of Americans for Limited Government, referencing the former first lady of Argentina who was known for dressing in designer gowns and jewels while advocating a socialist agenda.

“There is nothing wrong with spending money to make yourself look better, especially as a personality who depends upon visual mediums for her power. But it is a bad look to spend hundreds of dollars to get your hair done to make a video decrying income inequality,” Mr. Manning said.

Mr. Manning made excellent points, but as you might have guessed already, AOC didn’t feel the same way.

She ranted about it on her Twitter feed Thursday morning and Thursday night for good measure.

Here are the two responses that stood out to me:

First things first: Ocasio-Cortez’s quip about how “they’re just mad we look good doing it” is laughable for a number of reasons, some of which I mentioned above (because it’s not really about a haircut). It’s also hilarious considering she had a mini-meltdown over the “glamour shot” photo the New York Times used in an article they did about former White House communications director Hope Hicks a few months ago.

Yet just days after her Hope Hicks tweets, the freshman Congresswoman hypocritically complained about how women’s looks are sometimes used against them in order to belittle them (though AOC is totally not against using a woman’s looks against her when it suits her political purposes).

In her second tweet Thursday about HaircutGate, she said “I wonder if Republicans care about corruption as much as they care about a woman’s cut & color”, because playing the woman card is one of the things AOC does best when she has no good defense.

Guess she didn’t notice that the very same Washington Times article she railed against for daring to write “about a woman’s cut and color” also mentioned other notorious instances where the haircuts of male and female politicians made the news:

The 2016 Democratic presidential nominee, Hillary Clinton, splurged $600 on a hairdo during the campaign, prompting Vanity Fair to ask in a headline: “Is $600 too much for a haircut?”

Former Sen. John Edwards, who ran for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination and was the 2004 vice presidential nominee, was known to pay more than $500 to his hairstylist. President Bill Clinton’s $200 haircut in 1993 at Los Angeles International Airport made headlines when two of the airport’s runways had to be shut down for nearly an hour during the procedure.

Let’s also not forget the endless parade of articles on President Trump’s hair. And First Lady Melania Trump’s fashion choices.

As usual, AOC stepped on a rake bigly in a desperate attempt at deflecting a legitimate criticism. Not the first time, and won’t be the last.

Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-NY) speaks on Adam Schiff’s handling of the impeachment inquiry – 10/8/19. Screen grab via RNC Research.

On Tuesday, Rep. Lee Zeldin and other Republican members of Congress took questions from the media on the impeachment inquiry process. At one point they were asked why Adam Schiff should release full transcripts of testimony from witnesses including former Ambassador Kurt Volker before all witnesses had testified.

Zeldin proceeded to unload.

“There’s an argument against transparency?”, Zeldin asked the journalist.

“There’s an argument in favor of cherry-picking selective releases of texts. There’s an argument in favor of only telling the American public what is best in the interest of wanting to take down a sitting president. Maybe you should ask what was said inside of Volker’s deposition during his transcribed interview with regards to Adam Schiff’s fairy tale quid pro quo charge, that aid from the United States to the Ukraine was being linked to an investigation into the Bidens. Why don’t you ask what did Ambassador Volker say about that?”

Zeldin then went on to provide the answers, stating that Volker testified for several hours about how, among other things, President Zelensky “had no idea that there was a hold on aid” at the time of the July call.

He also noted that Volker testified that, “during this entire time, the aid was getting released. It was going to get released. And guess what happened? The aid got released” in spite of there being no new investigation into Joe Biden’s role in the firing of the Ukrainian prosecutor.

“This whole thing is a fairy tale,” Zeldin ranted. He also opined that Schiff is misleading the media and that they are going along with it, which in turn means the American people are being deceived. Schiff has lied numerous times about what was said during the phone call, which Volker confirmed with his full testimony, according to Zeldin.

Zeldin continued:

“…if we weren’t there last Thursday, you would have no idea of everything that Ambassador Volker said to obliterate Adam Schiff’s fairy-tale quid pro quo charge. You’d have no idea.

So we’re here. Now as far as the administration goes, if they don’t want to send Ambassador Sondland here, because this is a kangaroo court, because there has not been a vote to launch an impeachment inquiry, because the minority does not have any rights for subpoenas, because the president doesn’t have the right to have council present to ask questions for subpoena power, to present evidence. This entire thing is a political charade, is a clown show.”

Since Rasmussen reported Monday that a potential Trump vs. Clinton matchup would be “neck and neck” if she was running for president again at this very moment, there’s been some chatter on social media as to whether or not Hillary Clinton should consider giving it another try.

She’d be late to the game if she did, considering we’re just a few months away from the first round of primaries and caucuses. But it would give her a chance at revenge for what she’s routinely claimed without evidence for a couple of years now now: That the 2016 election was “stolen” from her.

With that in mind, we turn to a tweet from President Trump from earlier today in which he encouraged his former opponent to throw her hat into the ring:

Just a few hours later, Clinton responded:

“Don’t tempt me” is about as close as she’ll come to admitting she’s still considering a late entrance into the 2020 field. She’s been on a book promo tour with daughter Chelsea for the last several weeks, and she’s done numerous interviews with Democrat-friendly media outlets and programs like “The View”, People magazine, and CBS News. Their coverage of her could not possibly be more fawning.

Months in advance of her 2016 announcement she was telling the mainstream media she wasn’t going to run, but she ended up doing exactly that. And once she won the nomination she was convinced she had the presidency in the bag.

But she didn’t.

She would love nothing more than to get a second go at Trump for two reasons: 1) She wants to be the woman who breaks the glass ceiling and 2) She seriously believes he’s an “illegitimate” president and thinks she can do what she couldn’t in 2016: win.

She’s delusional, but her jumping into the ring could greatly heighten the entertainment value of the primary and general election campaign seasons.

I’ve got three words for her: Run, Hillary. Run!

Gregorius grand slam helps Yankees tag Twins in ALDS Game 2

Didi Gregorius hooked a slump-busting grand slam during a seven-run third inning and the New York Yankees pummeled the Minnesota Twins again, cruising to an 8-2 victory Saturday for a 2-0 lead in their AL Division Series.

Uber driver-turned-rookie big leaguer Randy Dobnak struggled in an unexpected start, and the Twins lost their record 15th consecutive postseason game, including 12 straight against the Yankees. The latter is the longest postseason skid for one club against another in baseball history, topping Boston’s dominance over the Angels from 1986-2008. Minnesota hasn’t won a playoff game since Johan Santana bested the Yankees in their 2004 Division Series opener.

Coaches and players on both sides have downplayed that history, most of which predates current rosters. It’s all too familiar for fans in Minnesota, where the teams will play Monday’s Game 3 in the best-of-five series.

Gregorius’ shot blew Game 2 wide open while New York batted around. The switch-hitter staggered after connecting for the first time since Sept. 10, looping his bat from one hand to another and mashing on bubble gum while he watched the ball fly. Gregorius, set to become a free agent after the season, batted .194 during September and was 0 for 3 in Game 1.

Manager Aaron Boone had predicted that if Gregorius could just find a hole, big hits might follow. Sure enough, Gregorius squibbed an infield single in his first at-bat before lifting his homer into the second deck in right field.

The 103-win Yankees used the same lineup in consecutive games for the first time this season, and the nine clicked top to bottom. They drew eight walks for the second straight game, and Aaron Judge led the way with two hits and two free passes.

Yankees right-hander Masahiro Tanaka pitched one-run ball for five innings for the win, striking out seven and handing off to New York’s fearsome bullpen after 83 pitches. Tanaka’s career postseason ERA climbed to 1.54, still second-lowest by a New York starter with a minimum of four starts behind Monte Pearson (1.01).

Dobnak faltered in just his 10th big league appearance, taking the loss a week after his wedding in Maryland. The undrafted right-hander allowed Edwin Encarnacion’s RBI single in the first inning, stranded two in the second and loaded the bases with no outs in the third before being pulled.

A night after allowing Gleyber Torres’ tiebreaking double, key Twins reliever Tyler Duffey scuffled again. The right-hander followed Dobnak and allowed a sacrifice fly to Giancarlo Stanton, an RBI hit to Torres and plunked Gary Sanchez before Gregorius’ drive.

New York scored four runs off Minnesota relievers a night after piling up seven in a 10-4 victory. The Yankees are 15-2 against the Twins in the playoffs, and these two games were the most lopsided during Minnesota’s losing streak.

Yankee Stadium rocked early after Friday’s blowout. Fans in left field shouted “Uber!” at Dobnak while he warmed in the bullpen, and Judge encouraged more noise from the bleachers before first pitch.

Gregorius took a curtain call while fans chanted his name after the slam, the 12th in postseason history for New York. The Bronx Bombers only connected for one homer Saturday after driving 306 of them during the regular season, one behind the Bomba Squad Twins for the major league record.

Tanaka left with a seven-run lead, but Boone ran out top middlemen Tommy Kahnle and Adam Ottavino to guide the game into the late innings. Tyler Lyons and Jonathan Loaisiga closed up with an inning each. Yankees pitchers gave up six hits, one walk and struck out 13, leaving the Twins with a .197 batting average in the two games.

Loaisiga allowed a run in the ninth on Luis Arraez’s double.

The teams played for 3 hours, 34 minutes, a night after dragging on for 4:15.

Judge tosses New York tax cap lawsuit

Westlake Legal Group AndrewCuomo Judge tosses New York tax cap lawsuit The Blog state and local taxes Salt New York Andrew Cuomo

One of the many sore spots for Democrats in the 2017 tax law was the limit placed on how much of your state and local taxes (SALT) could be deducted when filing your federal taxes. The SALT cap was set at $10,000 dollars and blue states with a lot of high earners objected, saying that the rule imposed an unfair burden on them. With that in mind, they began cooking up schemes to allow people to “donate” extra money in the amount they would have paid in excess state taxes to state-controlled “charitable” funds. This would have allowed the taxpayer to then deduct the same amount.

Well, the IRS shut that plan down back in June, so it was back to the drawing board. In New York, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that he would be going to court to challenge the SALT cap as a politically motivated scheme. All we can say for Mr. Cuomo is that it really doesn’t seem to be his year. A federal judge just threw the suit out, declaring it to be essentially without merit. (NY Post)

A federal judge’s decision Monday to toss Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s lawsuit over the federal cap on the state and local-tax deduction had to be — as the Empire Center’s E.J. McMahon put it — “among the least surprising” rulings of the year. The suit, after all, was patently bogus from the start.

“The cap, like any federal tax provision, will affect . . . some states more than others,” noted Judge Paul Oetken. States make their tax decisions within the context of federal law. That is, state taxes are up to the states themselves, and they have no right to expect federal law to accommodate them — with a full federal deduction — just because they opt for high taxes.

That’s going to leave a mark, at least rhetorically. Expecting every change in the tax code to impact each state equally when there are such wild variations in incomes and tax rates would be an impossibly high bar for the federal government to meet. And as the Post goes on to point out, the reason this is an issue at all is that New York’s taxes are so high.

Cuomo ran campaigns complaining about the state’s high taxes, but after almost nine years in office, he’s done nothing about it. As an example, he only recently extended the supposedly “temporary” millionaire’s tax in the Empire State for another five years. If he’s worried about high earners blowing far past the SALT cap, perhaps he should tax them less.

I’ve brought this up before in the context of this story, but it’s worth asking again. Why is Cuomo, a Democrat, fighting so hard to make sure the wealthiest people don’t pay more in taxes? Don’t the Democrats want to tax the rich for all they’re worth? Or is that only at the federal level where they won’t feel the backlash so much?

In any event, the SALT caps aren’t a loser for Trump and the Republicans. It was one of the few avenues available to balance out some of the lost revenue for the federal government. And in order to lose out on any serious amount of deductions from your state and local taxes in New York, you would need to be making well over $225K per year. Rank and file voters aren’t losing much sleep over that, I assure you.
