Face masks are must-have accessory of London fashion week amid coronavirus panic

Virus protection — but make it fashion.

The hottest accessory at London fashion week isn’t a Barbie-sized purse, but fashionable face masks amid widespread panic over coronavirus.

Though fabric face masks can’t exactly help prevent the spread of the virus, it hasn’t stopped stylish denizens from wearing them to shows anyway.

But these aren’t your ordinary face masks of the surgical hospital variety. The fashion flock is putting their own spin on the accessory with adornments to show off a bit of personality. One attendee outside the British Fashion Council (BFC) Show Space show wore one decorated with arrows, while a pair of women donned pastel-hued versions.

The BFC expects attendance at London fashion week to go down this year due to coronavirus, reports Reuters. Chinese designer Yuhan Wang opened LFW, but tells Reuters she had to cut down on looks because of delays caused by the virus. Six Chinese brands have canceled shows at Paris fashion week, Women’s Wear Daily reports, and upcoming fashion weeks in Beijing and Shanghai that were slated for March have been postponed.

London isn’t the first city where face masks have become the trending accessory. Several New York Fashion Week attendees covered their mouths last week, including stylist Marina Ingvarsson who wore a minimal black face mask outside the Michael Kors show. The trend was just as prevalent during NYFW in 2018 over flu concerns.

The streets aren’t the only place face masks have been popping up. Designers Phillipe and David Blond featured plenty of them during their Monday runway show for the Blonds, including bedazzled, bejeweled and feathered renditions. Blancore’s Yalan Li also included one made out of white mesh during her show.

In New York, face masks have become hard to come by, too. Most shops have reported selling out of plain surgical masks as of January following the rise of coronavirus cases stateside. Prices have also skyrocketed at online stores such as Amazon as shoppers even scoop up masks for their pets.

In China, where coronavirus originated, over 5,000 new cases were confirmed in a single day, according to officials. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed the total cases of the deadly illness in the US is now at 15 as of Thursday.

It’s not often you see something like this at the terminal.

A wild brawl between a traveler and police officers that involved the usage of a Taser was caught on video this week as passengers were waiting to board their flights at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport in Texas.

“I really hope that whatever was going on with this guy, it was a moment in time,” John Huston, the bystander who reportedly captured the footage, said in an interview with Fox 4.

DEAD BIRDS SEIZED IN WASHINGTON FROM PASSENGER ARRIVING FROM CHINA

Police told the station they were called to the airport Thursday afternoon after receiving a report of a man shoving an airline employee.

When they arrived, authorities say the suspect — identified as Jerome Toson Jr.– started arguing with the officers and took a swipe at one of them.

Footage purportedly shows an officer then tasering Toson. A scuffle ensues and he is eventually brought to the ground and subdued with the help of other travelers.

One officer was bitten in the arm and hand during the chaos, according to Fox 4.

Toson, as of Saturday, is being held at a jail in Fort Worth. He is facing numerous charges, including assault of a public servant, attempting to take a weapon from a peace officer and resisting arrest.

Harriet Tubman Visa debit card draws backlash, bank responds

A OneUnited Bank limited edition Visa debit card depicting Harriet Tubman has come under fire online from critics who say the design is in poor taste.

The image in question depicts the revered abolitionist with a serious stare while wearing a red-and-white head wrap. At the center of the controversy are Tubman’s arms, which are crossed over her chest with her hands balled into fists.

The gesture, to some, resembled the popular salute from Marvel’s “Black Panther.”

JASON NICHOLS: HARRIET TUBMAN BELONGS ON $20 BILL — CONGRESS SHOULD MAKE TRUMP PUT HER THERE IN 2020

OneUnited, which calls itself the nation’s largest black-owned bank, was quickly accused of using the historical figure to pander to African-American customers, during Black History Month.

“Make it make sense, y’all,” tweeted writer and former ESPN host Jemele Hill.

“This just wasn’t a well thought out idea. Please take this down,” a Twitter user commented.

JACK BREWER: BLACK HISTORY MONTH 2020 — TRUMP’S POLICIES ARE BETTERING LIVES BLACK AMERICANS

Another person wrote, “Wakanda isn’t real and even if it was Harriet Tubman was an American and not from this imaginary African country.”

Despite the public backlash, the company responded on Twitter that the Tubman image was not a reference to “Black Panther” or its fictional country. She actually is using American Sign Language sign for “love.”

“She was about love,” Addonis Parker, the Miami artist behind the painting, told The Washington Post. “It took sacrifice and love for her to do everything she’s done.”

Parker worked with the financial institution previously, painting a mural outside its branch in Liberty City. Some of his artwork has been used on its credit cards.

Not coincidentally, “Black Panther” director Ryan Coogler previously acknowledged that the Wakanda sign was inspired by the ASL sign for “love.”

After the Tubman debit card image went viral, OneUnited was quick to issue a statement.

“Harriet Tubman is the ultimate symbol of love – love that causes you to sacrifice everything, including your own life,” the bank tweeted. “The gesture is the sign language symbol for love. It’s so important that we love ourselves.”

Former “Love Island” host Caroline Flack has died at age 40, according to multiple reports.

The television personality‘s family released a statement to the U.K.’s Press Association confirming her passing.

“We can confirm that our Caroline passed away today on the 15th [of] February. We would ask that the press respect the privacy of the family at this difficult time,” the family said in a statement.

‘LOVE ISLAND’ HOST CAROLINE FLACK QUITS SHOW DAYS AFTER ASSAULT ARREST: REPORTS

ITV2 reacted to Flack’s sudden passing in a statement to Fox News on Saturday.

“Everybody at Love Island and ITV is shocked and saddened by this desperately sad news. Caroline was a much-loved member of the Love Island team and our sincere thoughts and condolences are with her family and friends,” ITV2 said.

A cause of death has not yet been revealed.

The television host’s death comes nearly two months after she decided to quit her job as host of the popular British reality show following an assault arrest in London.

“Love Island has been my world for the last five years, it’s the best show on telly. In order not to detract attention from the upcoming series, I feel the best thing I can do is to stand down for series six. I want to wish the incredible team working on the show a fantastic series in Cape Town,” Flack wrote on social media.

‘LOVE ISLAND’ HOST CAROLINE FLACK CHARGED WITH ASSAULT BY BEATING: REPORTS

Police had responded to Flack’s home based on reports that a man was assaulted. The man injured was Flack’s boyfriend, tennis player Lewis Burton, the BBC reported at the time.

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson told the British outlet they were called “on 12 December to a residential address in Islington,” where they “treated two people at the scene and took one person to the hospital.”

Despite the arrest, Flack and Burton appeared to be going strong in recent weeks. According to the Daily Mail, Burton shared a photo of the couple on Valentine’s Day, one day prior to her death. The post appears to have since been taken down.

“Happy Valentine’s…Love you,” Burton wrote, according to the British outlet.

Flack also hosted “The X Factor” and “I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! NOW!”

Flack’s passing marks the third death from the “Love Island” cast. Contestants Mike Thalassitis and Sophie Gradon took their own lives in 2019 and 2018, respectively.

A Maryland sailor gave his younger siblings a Valentine’s Day to remember.

LeBaron Bass had been stationed on the USS Abraham Lincoln for an 11-month deployment overseas – the longest he’s been away from his younger siblings.

Bass, who was deployed in the Middle East, first surprised his sister, 12-year-old Sasha, who was completely shocked to see her older brother in her classroom at Davis Middle School, Fox 5 DC reported.

“You just gonna sit there?” Bass can be heard in a video of the encounter asking his surprised sister, before giving her a big hug. “I got you. Did I get you?”

He then surprised his younger brother, 11-year-old Rahsaan.

“After 11 months, missing her birthday, missing almost every type of holiday there is, just to see her reaction – it was the best feeling I can image,” Bass told Fox 5 DC.

Sasha and Rahsaan said they never saw it coming.

“I was just surprised (that he’s back),” she said.

Their mother, Mary Sanders, told Fox 5 DC she and Bass had been planning the surprise for more than two months. It went off without a hitch.

“It’s an amazing feeling,” she said.

Bass is set to deploy again next month.

President Trump is “exactly right” to direct his efforts toward combatting sanctuary city policies, retired U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Director Tom Homan said Saturday.

Appearing on “Fox & Friends: Weekend” with host Griff Jenkins, Homan said he is glad the president is turning his attention toward the issue.

“The Congress isn’t going to fix it,” he stated. “I asked them two years ago to fix it. They are not going to fix it. They want it to be a 2020 issue.”

TRUMP ADMINISTRATION TO DEPLOY BORDER PATROL TO SANCTUARY CITIES TO HELP ICE CATCH ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS

Speaking in Washington on Friday, the president vowed to oppose sanctuary cities not complying with federal law or ICE agents.

“Not one more American life should be stolen by sanctuary cities,” he said. “That’s why we are calling on Congress to pass legislation giving American victims the right to sue sanctuary cities, and hold them accountable for the suffering and the damages that they have caused.”

On Friday, the New York Times reported that the Trump administration is set to deploy Border Patrol agents to sanctuary jurisdictions across the U.S. to help ICE track down and detain illegal immigrants freed by left-wing cities and states.

One hundred specially trained officers will work with ICE from February to May. Among the agents are members of an elite unit, which the Times describes as the SWAT team of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

“But look,” Homan reacted, “back when I was the ICE director and California passed their sanctuary law, I sent a lot of additional agents out to California and they said it was retaliation. It wasn’t retaliation.”

“When you take an agent out of the jail — an agent that can process 10 illegal [immigrants] during a shift — and you choose to kick the officer out of the jail, then release those 10 illegal [immigrants], it takes a whole fugitive operations team to try to find this person on his turf who has access to who knows what weapons,” he explained.

“This will help arrest those that are public safety threats and take them off our streets,” he told Jenkins.

Homan said the president’s crackdown on sanctuary policies would send a strong message that the country is “not open to illegal immigration.”

“If you are lucky enough to get by the border patrol, you are not home-free no matter what the Democrat leadership wants to say. You can go to the so-called sanctuary cities,” he concluded. “There is no sanctuary. ICE is not going to allow sanctuary; neither is Border Patrol.”

Esper optimistic about Taliban deal, warns of risk involved in political agreements

Westlake Legal Group Esper Esper optimistic about Taliban deal, warns of risk involved in political agreements Sam Dorman fox-news/world/conflicts/afghanistan fox-news/us/terror/counter-terrorism fox news fnc/world fnc article 5f7d5055-1c5c-5cf6-98a9-9c47ab962b59

A new U.S. deal with the Taliban could see a reduction in violence by Monday but Defense Secretary Mark Esper is cautiously optimistic about its effectiveness.

Esper said on Saturday the deal “looks very promising” and could lead to American troops’ withdrawal from Afghanistan. He was speaking at the Munich Security Conference just a day before the deal’s expected announcement.

The deal was negotiated between the U.S. special envoy for Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad and the Taliban, Esper said. The top defense official warned that political agreements involved risk.

“It’s my view as well that we have to give peace a chance, that the best if not the only way forward in Afghanistan is through a political agreement and that means taking some risk,” Esper said.

US, TALIBAN PEACE TALKS: ‘REDUCTION IN VIOLENCE’ PROPOSAL ON THE TABLE, OFFICIALS SAY

“That means enabling our diplomats and that means working together with our partners and allies on the ground to affect such a thing.”

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani hasn’t spoken publicly about the agreement, but according to Esper, he is “fully on board.”

“He wants to lead his part of the process, which if we get to that would be a peace deal that would involve very soon afterward an inter-Afghan negotiation,” Esper said. “He wants to be clearly a full partner in that and wants to lead on that and make sure that all Afghans come together.”

Esper told reporters that the U.S. troop levels could be reduced to about 8,600 — from 12,000 currently in the country —  if the 7-day truce is successful. However, the Defense Department said counterterrorism operations will continue in the country.

“Under any agreement, General Miller retains the authorities necessary to protect U.S. national security interests, including the authorities and capabilities to strike ISIS-K and al-Qaida,“ Pentagon spokeswoman Alyssa Farah said. Esper declined to say whether the U.S. had agreed to cut its troop levels in Afghanistan to zero.

Separately on Saturday, NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg told the security conference that he also supported the plan but stressed that the alliance’s mission in Afghanistan would continue in the short- and medium-term.

“We are not leaving Afghanistan but we are prepared to adjust our force level if the Taliban demonstrates the will and the capability to reduce violence and make real compromises that could pave the way for negotiations among Afghans for sustainable peace,” he said.

Quarantined cruise ship passenger speaks out against US coronavirus evacuation plan

A passenger aboard the Diamond Princess cruise ship, which is currently quarantined off the coast of Japan amid a coronavirus outbreak, is speaking out against the United States’ plan to evacuate American passengers.

Matthew Smith, who has been quarantined with his wife since Feb. 5, told Fox News’ Neil Cavuto that he prefers to stay on the cruise ship.

“Our greatest desire at this point is to maintain the quarantine that the Japanese health officials have established,” Smith said, “then get a test for the virus at the end of that quarantine so we can establish with relative certainty that we are not infected and be free to go.

“Unfortunately, the State Department has thrown a monkey wrench into that,” he added.

Approximately 400 Americans and their families on the Diamond Princess will be offered seats on two flights that could arrive at Travis Air Force Base near Sacramento, Calif., as early as Sunday, a CDC official told The Wall Street Journal.

A CDC team will screen passengers and those exhibiting symptoms won’t be allowed on the flights.

Smith, however, said he’s skeptical about the proposed plan.

“I understand getting off the ship to be in another space, but under this circumstance, the offer is we’re going to put you on buses with other people who haven’t completed their quarantines and have not been tested for the virus,” Smith said.

“We’re going to then put you on a plane with all these people and take you back to the United States, and because of the risk you still pose due to that situation we’re going to stick you in another quarantine.”

Smith said he would rather stay put on the Diamond Princess ship. While the ship is “getting a bad rap” for its living conditions, Smith said he is content where he is.

“We have access to the balcony, we are fed well – three times a day along with excess food — they provide all the necessities we need in there,” he said.

Smith said he does, however, sympathize with those who are not staying in a suite like he and his wife.

“We can go outside for fresh air and sunshine – when it does shine – whenever we like,” he explained.

“Other passengers have a vastly different experience if they’re on an interior cabin, which is markedly smaller and no access to fresh air. They have allowed those passengers up on the deck for an hour every few days.

Smith said his wife had been “depressed” and “more emotional” about the quarantine situation. She, too, was upset to learn about the U.S. plan to evacuate.

“Health-wise we are perfectly fine,” he said.
