Iran Will Stop Complying With Some Parts of Nuclear Deal

Westlake Legal Group 08dc-iran-hfo1-facebookJumbo Iran Will Stop Complying With Some Parts of Nuclear Deal United States International Relations Rouhani, Hassan Politics and Government Nuclear Weapons Iran

Iran’s president declared on Wednesday that the country would stop complying with two of its commitments under the Iranian nuclear deal, pushing the growing confrontation between Washington and Tehran into new and potentially dangerous territory.

The announcement by President Hassan Rouhani came exactly a year after President Trump withdrew entirely from the 2015 agreement, which limited Iran’s capacity to produce nuclear fuel for 15 years.

But Mr. Rouhani did not follow Mr. Trump’s path and renounce the entire agreement. Instead, he notified European nations that he was taking some carefully calibrated steps, and that he would give Europe 60 days to choose between following Mr. Trump or saving the deal by engaging in oil trade with Iran in violation of American unilateral sanctions.

“The path we have chosen today is not the path of war, it is the path of diplomacy,” he said in a nationally broadcast speech. “But diplomacy with a new language and a new logic.”

Starting on Wednesday, he said, Iran would begin to build up its stockpiles of low enriched uranium and of heavy water, which is used in nuclear reactors — including a reactor that could give Iran a source of bomb-grade plutonium. If the Europeans fail to compensate for the unilateral American sanctions, he said, Iran will resume construction of the Arak nuclear reactor, a facility that was shut down, and its key components dismantled, under the deal.

Mr. Rouhani then threatened a potentially more severe step. If the Europeans do not find a way to help Iran “reap our benefits,” especially in petroleum exports and banking transactions, in 60 days Iran will end the limits on the enrichment of uranium, he said. Currently, it is enriching small amounts, and only to a level of 3.67 percent, which is suitable for nuclear power plants — but not for nuclear weapons.

Without economic progress, he said, “we will not consider any limit” on enrichment, suggesting that it could rise to levels closer to something that could be used in weapons. Iran has never been known to produce weapons-grade material.

China, a signatory to the accord, urged restraint on all sides but put the blame for the confrontation squarely on Washington, which it said had escalated tensions. At a press briefing, Geng Shuang, spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, praised Iran for adhering to the nuclear agreement that Mr. Trump has abandoned, and reiterated his country’s endorsement of the agreement and opposition to United States sanctions against Iran.

Russia’s foreign minister, Sergey V. Lavrov, at a meeting in Moscow with his Iranian counterpart, Javad Zarif, complained about the “unacceptable situation” created by the “irresponsible behavior of the United States,” but did not respond directly to Mr. Rouhani’s comments.

If Iran begins carrying out Mr. Rohani’s threats in early July, it could put the country on the pathway to a bomb, essentially resuming activity that the 2015 nuclear accord pushed off to 2030. That would almost certainly revive debate in the United States over possible military action, or a resumption of covert action, like the cyber attack on Iran’s centrifuges a decade ago that the United States and Israel secretly conducted together.

None of the actions that Mr. Rouhani warned of would get Iran to a nuclear weapon anytime soon. But they would resume a slow, steady march that the 2015 agreement temporarily stopped.

Mr. Rouhani’s announcement marked another sharp blow to an agreement that President Barack Obama hoped would end 40 years of hostility between the two countries, and which he bet could open a new era of cooperation. While Iran scrupulously followed the deal, that cooperation never happened: Iran continued to test missiles — which were not covered in the arrangement — and to fund terror groups and the government of Bashar al-Assad in Syria.

Mr. Trump threatened to kill what he called the “worst deal in history,” and over the objections of several of his advisers he withdrew from it exactly a year ago. He complained that it was too narrow, and that the 15-year limit on Iran producing nuclear fuel simply kicked the problems down the road. Advocates of the arrangement said those provisions bought vital time, delaying a program that otherwise might have resulted in an Iranian bomb in just a year.

It is not clear how Washington will respond to Mr. Rouhani’s speech. While the United States abandoned its side of the nuclear deal, it has long demanded that Iran fulfill its commitments to international inspections and moratoriums on nuclear work. The national security adviser, John Bolton, a fierce opponent of the deal, has often said that Iran never intended to give up its nuclear ambitions — and he may cite Mr. Rouhani’s speech as further evidence.

Mr. Rouhani invited all participants in the deal to rejoin negotiations. But he said the 2015 agreement must be the basis for such talks, a position the Trump administration has rejected.

While Iran’s decision Wednesday did not terminate the landmark nuclear accord, it left it on life support.

Iran’s foreign minister, Mohammed Javad Zarif, said in an interview during a recent visit to New York that the country’s leadership was under growing pressure to respond to Mr. Trump’s effort to strangle Iran’s revenue. He called the continuing effort to starve Iran of the ability to engage in trade — which was enshrined in United Nations resolutions endorsing the 2015 agreement — a “war crime” against the Iranian people.

In an effort to contrast their behavior with Mr. Trump’s, Iran’s leaders have for now rejected calls that they, too, terminate the agreement. Instead, for the past year Tehran has remained fully in compliance, according to inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency.

But domestically, the failure to gain sanctions relief has put huge pressure on Mr. Rouhani to strike back at the United States.

The decision came just days after the Trump administration said it was moving bombers and a carrier group into the Persian Gulf as a warning to Iran, after intercepting intelligence that attacks on the United States forces or their allies might be in the offing. Mr. Pompeo took an unannounced trip to Iraq on Tuesday and told reporters he had discussed with Iraqi officials the “threat stream we had seen” from Tehran.

“We don’t want anyone interfering in their country, certainly not by attacking another nation inside of Iraq, and there was complete agreement,” he said.

But European officials say they remain mystified why Mr. Trump did not take on the Iranians for their support of terrorist groups while remaining within the deal. The result, they say, could well be a resumed nuclear crisis, as the Iranians seek to raise the pressure.

Colorado school shooting updates: STEM school to be closed this week after 1 dead, 8 injured

CLOSEWestlake Legal Group icon_close Colorado school shooting updates: STEM school to be closed this week after 1 dead, 8 injured

Gunfire erupted inside a suburban Denver middle school, killing one and wounding at least seven others. Two suspects were taken into custody. (April 7) AP

DENVER – One student is dead and eight others injured after two of their classmates opened fire at a suburban Denver STEM school on Tuesday.

Superintendent Thomas S. Tucker said in a letter to parents that STEM School Highlands Ranch, a public charter school with more than 1,850 students in kindergarten through 12th grade, will be closed for the remainder of the week.

“This is a terrible event,” Douglas County Sheriff Tony Spurlock said. “This is something that nobody wants to happen in their community.”

Two shooting suspects are in custody. One is an male juvenile and the other was identified by police as Devon Erickson, 18.

Here’s what we know Wednesday:

What happened?

Spurlock said the suspects opened fire in two separate classrooms. Police responded before 2 p.m., arriving quickly because there is a law enforcement substation nearby.

More: 1 dead, 8 injured in shooting at Denver STEM school; 2 students in custody

The two suspects were arrested after a struggle but were not injured, Spurlock said. Deputies recovered at least one handgun from the suspects, he added.

Robert Helfer, 13, was in math class when he heard a disturbance.

“Everyone thought it was a theater play at first. Then when we just started hearing banging and gunshots and cursing,” the seventh-grader said, his eyes red, his shaking hands twisting a plastic water bottle. “There was a body by the door when the police officer came to get us.”

Outside the school after the shooting, many parents still in work uniforms held tight to their sobbing children. Residents in the area described a scene of confusion and worry.

Who are the victims?

All of the shooting victims are students ages 15 and older. The male student who died was 18 years old, the sheriff tweeted Tuesday.

As of Tuesday evening, two of the injured were in serious condition, two were in stable condition and one was in good condition, area hospitals said. Three of the injured have been discharged, Littleton Adventist Hospital spokeswoman Wendy Forbes told USA TODAY.

What’s next in the investigation?

Authorities were waiting for a search warrant to inspect a suspect’s car at the school and their homes.

“We’re going to investigate that and we will get to the bottom of it to figure out how and what has occurred,” Spurlock said.

The sheriff said in a tweet that it would not be releasing photos at this time “as it could jeopardize this critical on-going invest.”

This community has experienced shootings before

About 8 miles away, Columbine High School is located in an adjacent community south of Denver.

The shooting Tuesday came less than a month after the 20th anniversary of the massacre at Columbine left 13 people dead.

“Tragically, this community and those surrounding it know all too well these hateful and horrible acts of violence,” White House spokesman Judd Deere said in a statement. President Donald Trump had been briefed on the shooting, Deere added.

Las month, Douglas County School District, which includes the STEM school, cancelled classes during an FBI manhunt for a woman “infatuated” with the Columbine shooting.

Andrea Pedatto, 46, was installing a ceiling fan at her nearby home when she got the news her son’s school was under attack.

“I wasn’t panicking because they hadn’t given any details yet. It’s hard when you don’t know,” she said. “This is Colorado. We have school shootings.”

California woman accused of attempting to drown newborn in McDonald’s restroom avoids jail time

A California woman accused of trying to drown her newborn in a McDonald’s restroom avoided jail time last week after striking a plea deal with prosecutors and pleading no contest to felony child endangerment.

Sarah Jane Lockner, 27, received four years of supervised probation and was ordered to take parenting classes. SFGate reported, citing court documents. Lockner reportedly agreed to the plea deal in January. She was originally charged with attempted murder.

Lockner was in the middle of a shift at a McDonald’s in Redwood City in the Bay Area in September 2017 when she was complaining of stomach pains, according to the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office. When her fellow employees noticed she was trailing blood, Lockner told them she had a “heavy period.”

A co-worker went to check on Lockner in the restroom and allegedly discovered Lockner with the newborn’s head face-down in a toilet bowl, according to prosecutors. Lockner reportedly told the co-worker not to call police, but the co-worker did anyway, according to the Mercury News of San Jose.

Responding officers found the baby not breathing and without a pulse, the newspaper reported. The baby was rushed to a hospital and survived. The child is reportedly staying with the father’s aunt.

It wasn’t the first time this had happened to Lockner, according to prosecutors. She had given birth to another child in a restroom at home three years prior to the McDonald’s birth, prosecutors said. Lockner said both times that she didn’t know she was pregnant.

Finland’s center-left Social Democratic Party which narrowly won last month’s general election says it is having talks with four centrist and left-leaning parties to form a coalition government but not the populists.

Antti Rinne, the leader of what became Finland’s largest party by an extremely narrow margin, said Wednesday that a combination including the Center Party, the Greens, the Left Alliance and the Swedish People’s Party of Finland “is the most stable composition for building a majority government.

Together, the five parties combined have 117 of the 200 seats in Finland’s parliament. Majority is 101 lawmakers in the Eduskunta assembly.

In the April 14 vote, the euroskeptic, anti-immigration Finns Party secured 17.5% support — 0.2 % less than the Social Democrats.

Jessica Chastain Calls Out ‘Game Of Thrones’ Over Rape Plot Device

Warning: spoilers for “Game of Thrones” below.

Jessica Chastain has called out “Game of Thrones” for the way in which it used the rape endured by Sansa Stark (played by Sophie Turner) in an earlier season as a plot point in Sunday’s latest episode.

Chastain said dialogue between The Hound (played by Rory McCann) and Stark as they marked victory in the Battle of Winterfell suggested the latter only possessed her current strength because of the harrowing sexual assault she’d suffered from Ramsay Bolton (played by Iwan Rheon) in season five of HBO’s epic fantasy drama.

The Hound told Stark: “You’ve changed, little bird.” He claimed that “none of it would have happened if you’d left Kings Landing with me, no Littlefinger, no Ramsay, none of it.”

Stark replied: “Without Littlefinger and Ramsay and the rest, I would’ve stayed a little bird all my life.”

Chastain tweeted that “rape is not a tool to make a character stronger.”

“A woman doesn’t need to be victimized in order to become a butterfly. The #littlebird was always a Phoenix,” she added. “Her prevailing strength is solely because of her. And her alone.”

Chastain’s comments provoked debate on Twitter:

Turner, 23, stars alongside Chastain, 42, in “X-Men: Dark Phoenix.” She has not responded to Chastain’s criticism of the scene.

But on Bolton’s savage death by his own hounds, Turner told Rolling Stone magazine last month it was “the most satisfying scene.”

It made me so emotional because I’ve been waiting so long for her to stand up to the people who have done her wrong,” she explained.

File this under: Your tax dollars at work.

A California prison administrator spent thousands of hours watching YouTube videos instead of doing his job, according to a report released Tuesday by the California state auditor.

“On one particularly egregious day, we found that the administrator accessed 55 YouTube videos that did not appear to be related to his duties,” the auditor’s report stated. “When we shared the administrator’s Internet activity with his supervisor, she agreed that the evidence confirmed the poor work output she witnessed from the administrator.”

The employee — whose name was not released but worked in the education program at Valley State Prison in Chowchilla – watched more 2,256 YouTube videos between September 2017 and June 2018, according to the report. He retired before he could be disciplined, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said.

“CDCR does not believe that the administrator was aware of the investigation or that the timing of his retirement was related to investigative activity,” the report said.

The videos mostly consisted of crime footage, political and religious commentary and footage of recreational vehicles, according to the audit. Sites like YouTube are normally blocked for California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation employees.

The employee was allowed to view the site because his duties sometimes required him to access some websites off-limits to others. His constant YouTube surfing resulted in poor work performance, according to his supervisor.

The man “often revealed a surprising lack of knowledge when she asked him simple questions,” and the supervisor “could not remember a week when he had worked the expected 40 hours,” the auditor’s office wrote.

In response to the report, the corrections department said it would explore a reporting system to identify the top internet users, the audit said.

Trump’s Old Tweet About People Who Don’t Pay Taxes Comes Back To Haunt Him

I had to look it up:

“The state of New York and Donald Trump have decided to kill Trump on the Ocean, The Donald’s massive catering hall and restaurant space on the boardwalk in Jones Beach, Long Island. According to Newsday, Trump and state parks officials agreed that the oceanfront 80,000-square-foot project, and especially its 14,000-square-feet of basement space, was maybe kind of a terrible idea given the danger posed by more storms like Hurricane Sandy.

More than anything, this sounds like the state and The Donald washing their hands of what had been a six-year-long headache. The state shot down Trump’s plans for the massive project four times after he initially proposed back in 2006, leading to lawsuits that the state won. In June, Trump and the state finally reached an agreement on the 400-seat restaurant and enormous events space, four months to the day before Sandy destroyed the boardwalk.”

The campaign initially focused on social media safety, including cyberbullying, which many critics found ironic given President Donald Trump’s often-bullying behavior on Twitter. Moving forward, it will cover overall online safety, not just social media.

In addition, the opioids portion of the program originally served babies born with neonatal abstinence syndrome. Now it will include all children impacted by the drug.

But many critics focused on the social media/online safety portion of the program and suggested that if the first lady was expanding it, she might want to expand it right into the White House to include the president’s social media habits:

Despite the video you have seen — and despite all appearances — state Rep. Brian Sims, D-Pa., is not a mentally-ill panhandler or a vagrant with a drug problem screaming at strangers. It looks like it. But he is not.

He is an elected lawmaker. He represents central Philadelphia in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. And he is a star, by the way, in the Democratic Party.

He has hung out with Pete Buttigieg. He has a robust social media following. In 2014, NARAL Pro-Choice America — that’s the abortion clinic lobby — gave him a top award. He posed for a picture with NARAL President Ilyse Hogue.

In the modern Democratic Party, Brian Sims is a totally and completely mainstream figure. He is also, as you have seen in recent videos, a frothing extremist, who is willing to threaten teenagers and attack them for their skin color, simply because they disagree with him.

The American Bar Association has also given Sims an award for something or another. In 2013, when she became ambassador to Japan, Caroline Kennedy asked him to deliver the keynote address at her swearing in.

In other words, in the modern Democratic Party, Brian Sims is a totally and completely mainstream figure. He is also, as you have seen in recent videos, a frothing extremist, who is willing to threaten teenagers and attack them for their skin color, simply because they disagree with him.

Sims calls other people racist because they want fewer black women to abort their children. The whole thing is totally deranged. But it’s entirely okay with Democrats. The Pennsylvania Democratic Party has not even commented on Brian Sims berating and threatening teenage girls for praying outside of an abortion clinic.

Nobody at CNN is denouncing him. In fact, CNN’s website doesn’t even have a story about this as of this hour. Why would it? He is their kind of politician, so it’s not news. In fact, it never even happened.

Remember that the next time CNN calls you immoral. It won’t be long.
