Putin: ‘Far-fetched’ impeachment of Trump will end in the Senate

House Democrats have described it as “sad” and “solemn.” But Russian President Vladimir Putin? To him, it’s more “far-fetched.”

The Russian leader panned the impeachment proceedings against President Trump during his annual news conference in Moscow on Thursday, predicting that it will only go as far as the Senate.

“The party that lost the [2016] election, the Democratic Party, is trying to achieve results by other means,” Putin said.

SEVERAL DEMOCRATS DEFECT ON IMPEACHMENT

He likened Trump’s impeachment to the earlier U.S. investigation into collusion with Russia, which Putin downplayed as being groundless.

Putin noted that the impeachment motion “is yet to pass the Senate where the Republicans have a majority.”

He added that “they will be unlikely to remove a representative of their own party from office on what seems to me, an absolutely far-fetched reason.”

Trump was impeached by the U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday, becoming only the third American president to be formally charged under the Constitution’s ultimate remedy for high crimes and misdemeanors.

The vote split along party lines, much the way it has divided the nation, over a charge that the 45th president abused the power of his office by enlisting a foreign government to investigate a political rival ahead of the 2020 election. The House then approved a second charge, that he obstructed Congress in its investigation. The articles of impeachment now go to the Senate for trial.

Cowboys QB Prescott expected to play despite shoulder injury

Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott has a shoulder injury that is limiting him in practice but shouldn’t keep him out Sunday when the Cowboys try to qualify for the playoffs at Philadelphia.

The Cowboys and Eagles are tied for the NFC East lead at 7-7, and Dallas advances to the postseason with a victory.

Prescott didn’t throw during the portion of practice that was open to reporters Wednesday. Coach Jason Garrett said Prescott had an MRI and “everything seems to be OK.” Prescott was already dealing with injuries to his right index finger and left wrist.

Troy Aikman, a Fox television analyst and former Dallas quarterback, said Prescott told him before last weekend’s 44-21 win over the Los Angeles Rams there was a hairline fracture in the finger. Garrett hasn’t discussed specifics of the finger injury.

Garrett said he wasn’t concerned about the various injuries affecting Prescott’s performance.

“He’s as tough as they come,” Garrett said. “His physical toughness and mental toughness are on par with anybody I’ve been around and that’s just what he’s all about.”

Prescott was injured at the end of a 7-yard run in the first quarter when Rams linebacker Clay Matthews landed on his shoulder while making the tackle. Prescott didn’t leave the game and threw two touchdown passes in the first half.

The 26-year-old Prescott has started every game in his four-year career, 62 so far in the regular season along with three playoff games.

Utah ducks No. 6 Kentucky’s rally, holds off Wildcats 69-66

Timmy Allen has dedicated every game he’s played to his mother since losing her to cancer in 2016.

He gave her something special Wednesday night — at a contest benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer, no less.

Allen hit a tiebreaking floater with 1:14 left to help Utah dodge a rousing comeback try by No. 6 Kentucky for a 69-66 upset. The Utes sophomore, who has a tattoo on his arm and messages written on his shoe memorializing his mother, Elise, said his mind went straight to her.

“I told her this game was for her today, and I’m glad I lived up to it,” said Allen, who had 25 points and nine rebounds.

The Wildcats (8-2) used a 27-10 run to tie it at 68 on Ashton Hagans’ dunk with 1:43 remaining, but Allen put the Utes (9-2) back ahead with his step-back, right-handed floater over Nick Richards.

“It was tough, but that’s the stuff I work on,” Allen said. “I’m not surprised I made it, but I had a 6-foot-11 guy right there, so getting it over him was tough, he’s a big, physical presence. But that’s the stuff I work on.”

Kentucky, which had held its last four opponents to 58 or fewer points, got off three more shots, including two in the final 11 seconds, but none connected.

The Utes’ last win against an AP Top 25 team was on Feb 27, 2016, against No. 9 Arizona at home, 70-64.

Both Gach contributed 14 points and six rebounds, Rylan Jones had 12 points and Riley Battin added 10 for the Utes.

Utah shot a blistering 62.5% (10 of 16) from the floor in the second half and was 23 of 42 (54.8%) for the game, including 53.3% (8 of 15) from 3-point range.

Coach Larry Krystkowiak said he challenged his Utes before the game to outmuscle the Wildcats, something Kentucky coach John Calipari said was the difference.

“They physically fought, they fought for position, they fought for defense, they fought for rebounds, they fought running down the floor they outran (us),” Calipari said. “That’s what I’m trying to get my team to do. That was a great win and they deserved it. I mean he outcoached me the way they did it, and they outplayed us. They deserved to win the game.”

Tyrese Maxey led Kentucky with 18 points, and Hagans added 16.

Maxey had a chance to tie it but was called for an offensive foul when he drove the lane and barreled into Battin, giving the Utes the ball with 22.7 seconds left.

Jones hit 1 of 2 free throws to give Utah a three-point lead.

Maxey missed a 3-pointer, Kentucky scrambled for the rebound, and Immanuel Quickley clanked a 3 off the rim as time ran out.

“When we were under control, we were pretty darned good when we shared the ball,” Krystkowiak said. “I thought there were some stretches when we lost our composure, turning it over and maybe forced some shots. For our guys to kind of stay in the fight, that was pretty cool.”

The Utes opened on a 10-4 run as Gach hit four of his first five shots. Utah made seven of its first nine from the floor to take an 18-9 lead midway through the first half.

Kentucky struggled to find a rhythm early, hitting just four of its first 14 attempts. The Wildcats were just 13 of 31 from the floor in the first half. They closed the half hitting 6 of 9 to cut Utah’s lead to 35-31 at halftime.

BIG PICTURE

Kentucky: The Wildcats had made at least one 3-pointer in each first half of their nine games. They were 0 for 7 against Utah, contributing to their dismal shooting display over the first 20 minutes.

Utah: Gach came into the game hitting a career 30.3% from 3-point range and just 27% this season. He found his touch against the Wildcats, hitting 3 of 5, all in the first half.

POLL IMPLICATION

While Kentucky will likely slip from its spot in the poll, Utah could sneak into next week’s AP Top 25 if it can knock off No. 20 San Diego State on Saturday.

Bank of England Audio Was Leaked, Giving Some Traders an Edge

Westlake Legal Group 19bankhack-facebookJumbo Bank of England Audio Was Leaked, Giving Some Traders an Edge Times of London Stocks and Bonds Interest Rates Financial Conduct Authority (Great Britain) Economic Conditions and Trends Carney, Mark J Banking and Financial Institutions Bank of England

LONDON — The Bank of England said Thursday that an audio feed from its news conferences had been released to some investors before it had been made public, giving them a leg up on the rest of the market.

The central bank said it was investigating how a third-party supplier had gotten early access to policymakers’ remarks since earlier this year. In the world of high-speed trading, just a few seconds’ lead time can offer some investors a trading advantage.

The Financial Conduct Authority, which regulates Britain’s financial markets, also said it was investigating the leak.

Any trades made on the basis of leaked information or insider dealing would come under the review of the Financial Conduct Authority, which has a mandate to insure that competition in the markets is respected.

A spokeswoman for the agency said in an email that it was looking into the Bank of England leak, but declined to comment on whether any trading had occurred on the basis of the leaked information.

After queries from The Times of London, the bank said the audio feed of its news conferences, which is used as a backup in case the video feed fails, had been “misused by a third-party supplier to the bank since earlier this year to supply services to other external clients.”

The audio feed provides traders a five- to eight-second advantage over the video feed, The Times reported.

Bloomberg said that it was the manager of the video feed and that it made it available to other news providers. The Bank of England did not identify the supplier of the audio feed, but said that it had disabled the supplier’s access. “As a result, the third-party supplier did not have any access to the most recent press conference and will no longer play any part in any of the bank’s future press conferences,” it said in a statement.

“The bank operates the highest standards of information security around the release of the market sensitive decisions of its policy committees,” the statement added. “The issue identified related only to the broadcast of press conferences that follow such statements.”

The disclosure came before the bank’s scheduled release of a monetary policy statement at noon on Thursday, to be followed by a news conference by the bank’s governor, Mark Carney. Mr. Carney, who has headed the Bank of England since 2013, is scheduled to step down Jan. 31.

Comments from the Bank of England’s news conferences are closely monitored for indications about the bank’s thinking on interest rates and the state of the economy.

The bank routinely puts reporters through tight precautions to prevent leaks that could prove valuable to traders. Before they are allowed to view policy announcements and forecasts ahead of their release, reporters are locked in a room with a security guard standing by and cellphone connectivity is cut. They are not allowed to leave the room until after the embargo is lifted.

Premature access to potentially market-moving information is a crucial concern to financial regulators around the world. In a 2015 case, prosecutors and regulators in the United States asserted that 32 traders and hackers had reaped more than $100 million in illegal proceeds from a scheme that provided a look at corporate news releases before they were made public.

Second Chinese national busted for illegally entering Mar-a-Lago resort

A Chinese national was arrested Wednesday for illegally entering President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club in Florida and refusing to leave — the second time a person from China was arrested for trespassing on the property this year, reports said.

Jing Lu, 56, was ordered off the property by the club’s private security officers, but she returned to take photos and the club called police to arrest her, according to The Palm Beach Post.

When Palm Beach County police arrived to arrest the woman, it was discovered that she had an expired visa.

Pennsylvania man accused of vandalizing Beverly Hills synagogue arrested in Hawaii

A Pennsylvania man was arrested in Hawaii on Wednesday, less than a week after he allegedly vandalized the interior of a Southern California synagogue.

Anton Nathaniel Redding, 24, was charged with vandalism of a religious property and commercial burglary – with a penalty enhancement for a hate crime – for allegedly breaking into the Nessah Synagogue in Beverly Hills late Friday night, according to the Beverly Hills Police Department, The Los Angeles Times reported.

Redding tore a Torah scroll and prayer book and “moved throughout the sanctuary, heavily ransacking the interior,” the police report said, according to the Jewish Telegraph Agency.

“I said we would catch this guy, and we did,” Beverly Hills Mayor John Mirisch said in a statement, according to The Times. “The criminal who we believe desecrated a holy place on Shabbat is now in custody thanks to the superb work of the Beverly Hills Police Department.”

“This cowardly attack hits at the heart of who we are as a community,” he said, according to the JTA. “It is not just an attack on the Jewish community of Beverly Hills; it’s an attack on all of us.”

The mayor said Redding flew to Hawaii following the attack.

He was arrested in Kona by the Hawai‘i County Police Department after they were alerted he was wanted on a felony extradition warrant, Big Island Now reported.

Redding had been captured on surveillance video and was identified as a suspect Tuesday, KABC-TV of Los Angeles reported.
