WWII plot to kill FDR? Bret Baier investigates

“On November 12th, 1943, under a veil of secrecy, President Roosevelt boarded the USS Iowa, from his presidential yacht at the mouth of the Potomac River, headed for arguably one of the most important meetings in the history of the world,” Fox News chief political anchor Bret Baier told Fox Nation in a special edition of the new documentary, “Three Days At The Brink.”

Little did FDR know, but in 48 hours, he would face one of the most serious and deadly threats to his life.

U.S. MARINE CRITICALLY WOUNDED AFTER JUMPING ON GRENADE HAS MESSAGE FOR AMERICANS

“Three Days at the Brink: FDR’s Daring Voyage” is based on Baier’s new book, Three Days at the Brink: FDR’s Daring Gamble to Win World War II, which will be released on October 22.

The special edition documentary details the 32nd president’s trip across the Atlantic ocean to attend the secret Tehran Conference and meet with British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and Russian General Secretary Joseph Stalin to plot the D-Day invasion and the endgame of the worst conflict that the world had ever seen.

“Germany u-boats were everywhere in the Atlantic.  But it wasn’t just the president… he had the entire war brain trust of World War II on one ship.”

— Military historian and best-selling author Douglas Keeney

“The idea that the president of the United States would get on a ship and cross the Atlantic Ocean in the middle of World War II just seemed amazing to me,” military historian and best-selling author Douglas Keeney told Fox Nation.

“Germany u-boats were everywhere in the Atlantic.  But it wasn’t just the president. He had the head of the United States Air Force, the head and the commander-in-chief of the Navy, he had the head of the Army… he had 59 other generals, he had the entire war brain trust of World War II on one ship. And it was going to cross a sub-infested Atlantic Ocean and go all the way into the Mediterranean.”

AIR FORCE LT COL STARTED VET’S CHARITY AFTER WITNESSING DISRESPECT FOR FALLEN HERO

At the time it was launched, the USS Iowa was “the greatest warship of the United States Navy,” according to Battleship Iowa curator Dave Way. The Iowa had a three-ship destroyer escort all the way across the Atlantic, but all of those precautions did not ensure the president’s safety.

“The famous Porter incident, which was the second day out, Roosevelt and company… were all on the port side of the captain’s cabin over by the admiral’s veranda, actually watching a 40-millimeter firing demonstration against some balloons,” recounted USS Iowa Museum volunteer Mike Hershman.

“The accompanying destroyer, the USS Porter, had decided on its own to have a torpedo drill,” he continued.

“When you have a torpedo drill, you just simulate firing, you don’t actually fire the torpedo and you pick out the nearest ship as your target. Well, they picked out [the USS Iowa].  They started to fire. Nothing happened… then boom. Here comes a live torpedo headed at the president of the United States.”

BRET BAIER POSTS PICTURE WITH MEDAL OF HONOR RECIPIENT HONORED AT MLB GAME

“Initially, they didn’t want to break radio silence,” said Way.  “The signal lamp was used, but the sailor garbled the signal. Iowa didn’t understand it. Porter finally broke radio silence and said, ‘Hey, you have a life torpedo heading your way!'”

The USS Iowa immediately increased its speed and turned directly toward the incoming, armed torpedo. Despite the obvious concern on deck, FDR was apparently delighted at the unforeseen adventure.

“[FDR] thought this was very entertaining,” Way said of the wheelchair-bound president. “He asked the Secret Service folks to wheel him towards the edge of the railing and the Secret Service people — they pulled their revolvers. They were going to shoot the torpedo.”

In the confusion on the bridge of the USS Iowa, the admiral ordered the battleship’s massive guns to be aimed at the USS Porter, suspecting that a potential assassination attempt was underway.

Luckily for the president and everyone onboard, the torpedo exploded about a thousand feet behind the battleship, where it was triggered by the wake.

“All the diarists actually admit that had that torpedo hit them at the right place where the bunker field was, where the ammunition was, they could have sunk the Iowa … Friendly fire could have sunk the Iowa,” said Kenney.

When the USS Porter returned to port, they were ordered to the United States Naval Station in Bermuda. The whole crew was arrested and interrogated for three days until a sailor admitted that he accidentally left a live torpedo in the tube. The sailor was going to be sentenced to 14 years of hard labor when FDR intervened.

“The president stood in and said, ‘We’ve all suffered enough. Let’s just go on with the war,'” Way said.

Erdogan says Turkey hasn’t ‘forgotten’ Trump’s ‘tough guy’ letter on Syria invasion

CLOSEWestlake Legal Group icon_close Erdogan says Turkey hasn't 'forgotten' Trump's 'tough guy' letter on Syria invasion

A senior U.S. delegation led by Vice President Mike Pence pursued an uphill mission Thursday to persuade Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to call for a cease-fire in his fight with Kurdish forces in northern Syria. (Oct. 17) AP, AP

DALLAS – President Donald Trump’s unusual letter to Turkey counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan in which he told the country’s president “don’t be a tough guy” and “don’t be a fool!” over his invasion into Syria – did not get a good review from the recipient.

“President Trump’s letter, which did not go hand in hand with political and diplomatic courtesy, has appeared in the media,” Erdogan told reporters on Friday. “Of course we haven’t forgotten it. It would not be right for us to forget it.”

Erdogan also said, “this is not a priority for us, but when the time comes we would like it to be known that we will take the necessary steps.” He did not elaborate.

Meanwhile, Turkey’s ambassador to the U.S., Serdar Kilic, told PBS’ NewsHour that “I hope history will not record that letter,” and it should never have been sent because “it lacks all the niceties, and it’s void of any established practices in that regard.”

Trump sent the letter days after announcing he would withdraw U.S. troops from Syria, allowing Turkish troops to attack Kurdish allies who helped the U.S. fight ISIS. Trump took severe criticism for the move, which critics argue is an abandonment of a U.S. ally and one to inject chaos into the region.

Kurds and Turkey: Fighting continues in Syria despite Trump’s ‘cease-fire,’ Kurds say. Turkey denies clashes

The White House confirmed the authenticity of the Oct. 9 letter in which Trump demanded that Erdogan call off his invasion of northern Syria, advice the Turkish leader pretty much ignored.

“Let’s work out a good deal!” Trump said to Erdogan. “You don’t want to be responsible for slaughtering thousands of people, and I don’t want to be responsible for destroying the Turkish economy – and I will.”

He ended it by saying: “History will look upon you favorably if you get this done the right and humane way. It will look upon you forever as the devil if good things don’t happen. Don’t be a tough guy. Don’t be a fool!”

BBC report claimed Erdogan angrily threw the letter in the trash after reading it.

Erdogan’s dismissal came after he and U.S. negotiators agreed to a cease-fire, a development for which Trump took credit.

The Turkish president is “a friend of mine and I’m glad we didn’t have a problem because frankly, he’s a hell of a leader and he’s a tough man,” Trump told reporters during a trip to Texas. “He’s a strong man. And, he did the right thing.”

Dozens killed in Afghanistan mosque bombing

At least 62 people were killed in Afghanistan Friday after a bomb blast caused the roof of a mosque to cave in, according to officials.

The explosion at the mosque in Nangarhar province occurred during Friday prayers – and no one has come forward yet to claim responsibility for the attack.

“The number of casualties may rise as the rescue team and people are working to bring out the bodies from the rubble,” Sohrab Qaderi, a local government official, told Reuters.

Another official reported that 62 people were killed and 36 were injured in the blast. Victims are still being assisted.

US DROPPED MORE BOMBS ON AFGHANISTAN LAST MONTH THAN ANY TIME SINCE 2010, AIR FORCE SAYS

Eyewitnesses told the BBC that the explosion caused the roof of the mosque to cave in.

Zahir Adil, a spokesman for the public health department in Nangarhar Province, said 23 of the wounded were transferred to Jalalabad, the provincial capital, and the rest were being treated in the Haskamena district clinic.

The violence comes a day after a United Nations report said that Afghan civilians are dying in record numbers in the country’s increasingly brutal war, noting that more civilians died in July than in any previous one-month period since the U.N. began keeping statistics.

“Civilian casualties at record-high levels clearly show the need for all parties concerned to pay much more attention to protecting the civilian population, including through a review of conduct during combat operations,” said Tadamichi Yamamoto, the U.N. secretary-general’s special representative for Afghanistan.

In western Herat province, six civilians including four children also were killed Thursday when their vehicle was hit by a roadside bomb, said Jelani Farhad, spokesman for the provincial governor. He added that five other civilians were wounded in an attack in the Zawal district.

WATCH: Rick Perry pressed on looming exit from Trump administration, denies it’s linked to Ukraine call

Westlake Legal Group PERRY-CROP WATCH: Rick Perry pressed on looming exit from Trump administration, denies it's linked to Ukraine call Julia Musto fox-news/world/conflicts/ukraine fox-news/us/energy fox-news/shows/americas-newsroom fox-news/politics/trump-impeachment-inquiry fox-news/media/fox-news-flash fox news fnc/media fnc article 3ed2bf97-3ce0-5987-a6fa-6e25b23251f8

The United States is being “hamstrung” because of the House Democrats’ “politically generated” impeachment inquiry, Secretary of Energy Rick Perry said on Friday, as he was pressed on the timing of his looming departure from the administration.

Appearing on “America’s Newsroom,” Perry told co-host Bill Hemmer that what the president has done wrong “in a lot of people’s eyes” is win the 2016 election and that important issues like trade and the USMCA deal are being pushed to the side by this “almost crazed idea.”

“If they’re going to do this, they need to at least follow the historic rules,” said Perry. “And, they’re not.”

After almost three years in the White House, Perry notified President Trump Thursday that he intends to leave his job. The departure had been rumored for weeks. He denied to Hemmer that it had anything to do with Ukraine, saying that the last nine months he has been looking to get back to his home in Texas, where he was governor for 15 years.

HOUSE DEMOCRATS SUBPOENA ENERGY SECRETARY RICK PERRY FOR UKRAINE DOCS IN THE IMPEACHMENT INQUIRY

Fox News was told Perry had planned to resign at the end of the year. However, he had come under scrutiny over the role he played in the president’s dealings with Ukraine–currently the subject of the impeachment inquiry– raising questions as to whether the probe factored into his announcement.

House Democrats subpoenaed Perry this week as part of their investigation. He said that he would rely upon his general counsel for advice before deciding if he would testify and turn over documents.

On Thursday, Mick Mulvaney, the acting White House chief of staff, seemed to contradict President Trump’s claim that there was no “quid pro quo” during his July phone call with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky. In a press conference, Mulvaney told reporters at the White House that the release of military aid to Ukraine was tied to the administration’s demands that Kiev investigate purported corruption by the Democrats during the 2016 presidential election campaign.

Perry told Hemmer that there was “no quid pro quo in the sense of what those folks out there would like for it to be” and that Mulvaney was “straight up with what he said.”

“I think the truth of the matter,” he added, “is we’ve been working to get Ukraine back in the sphere of influence of the United States and the Western states with American gas for two-plus years when [former Ukranian President Petro] Poroshenko was over there. We met with him. We talked to him about: ‘You’ve got to get rid of the corruption in this country.'”

“Everyone knows that the oligarchs and the people in that country were corrupt. Or, too many of them were — let me put it that way,” he stated. “And, Zelenskiy ran on this. He said, ‘You elect me and I will stop this corruption in the country.’ We had those conversations with him.”

Hemmer shot back: “So, you’re saying the Bidens’ name did not come up in any of your discussions with Ukrainian officials, correct? Did it come up in any of your discussions with the White House?”

“No,” Perry said emphatically. “President Trump wasn’t going to send American money to a country that had a history of being corrupt.”

In an exclusive interview published in The Wall Street Journal late Wednesday, Perry said that he pushed on President Trump “a lot” to make the Zelenskiy phone call because he “became convinced that Zelensky, the people around him, were legitimately trying to get rid of the corruption and get off the Russian gas.”

Hemmer asked: “You said a week ago [in The] Wall Street Journal you were told to consult with Rudy Giuliani on matters with Ukraine. Were you okay with that?”

Perry responded: “I trust him.”

“It didn’t strike you as odd?” Hemmer asked.

“As the governor of Texas, I used people outside of the government all the time to give me information: experts,” Perry answered. He added that he respected the State Department but happens to know people in the energy industry that are “smarter than the State Department folks” and didn’t see a problem with Giuliani’s involvement.

Hemmer asked: “Will they find any evidence of a crime based on your experience and your dealings with the West Wing of the White House and Ukraine, sir?”

“No,” said Perry.

Identical twin nurses in Georgia deliver identical twin babies

Talk about seeing double — two times over.

A set of 26-year-old identical twins who are both nurses at the same hospital in Georgia recently helped deliver a set of identical twin babies.

On. Sept. 25 at the Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center in Athens, twin sisters Tori Howard and Tara Drinkard assisted with the delivery of twin sisters Addison and Emma Williams.

They learned of the serendipitous event just moments before entering the delivery room. It also marked the first time the two were in the delivery room together as nurses, Piedmont Healthcare said on Facebook.

Howard is an NICU nurse at the facility while Drinkard is a labor and delivery nurse.

“For every c-section that labor and delivery does, we have one NICU nurse that goes because c-sections are higher risk,” Howard explained to “Good Morning America.

“I was excited to go to delivery with my sister but it didn’t really cross my mind — we’re twins and they’re twins,” she added.

In 1984, Chaka Khan enjoyed a career-revitalizing smash with “I Feel for You,” a spangly, funky, Grammy-winning R&B crossover that featured a harmonica solo from Stevie Wonder and a guest rap from Melle Mel. The track had already been covered on records by The Pointer Sisters and Rebbie Jackson, as well as Prince‘s self-titled second album, but Khan’s version is the one that became a classic. Before any of those versions, though, the song existed only as an unreleased acoustic demo by Prince, who was just 20 at the time.

Friday morning, the late icon’s estate dropped Prince’s demo as a surprise release, available via streaming services and as the A-side of a 7″ single. (Prince’s original studio recording is the B-side.) The spare demo, which captures the singer and his acoustic guitar back in the winter of 1978-79, turned up on a cassette in Prince’s massive recorded archives, which promise to yield treasures such as this one for many years to come.

“I Feel for You” is available on 7″ for a limited time via Prince’s website.

Tucker Carlson: What Elizabeth Warren doesn’t want you to know about her ‘Medicare-for-all’ plan

From the beginning, the 2020 Democratic race has been a different kind of contest. The candidates don’t seem to be competing to see who can run the country most efficiently. That’s the old style of politics.

Instead, these candidates are pledging to remake America entirely. Rip out the old, which is. they’re telling us, irredeemably tainted by racism, sexism and free enterprise, and replace it with something completely new and different.

At the heart of this effort is the promise of “Medicare-for-all.” Now, you may have heard the phrase. Two of the most popular Democratic candidates, Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, both have endorsed it. But what exactly does it mean? What exactly is “Medicare-for-all”?

SANDERS ACCUSES BIDEN OF PUSHING INSURANCE INDUSTRY ‘TALKING POINTS’ BY SLAMMING ‘MEDICARE-FOR-ALL’

It’s worth finding out. It’s not a tweak to some regulation. It’s not even ObamaCare, which once upon a time Democrats defended and Republicans denounced as socialism.

“Medicare-for-all” is actual socialism, for-real socialism. Health care spending amounts to about a fifth of the entire American economy. Elizabeth Warren demands total control of all of it — immediately. That’s “Medicare-for-all.” If it becomes law, it would amount to the largest expansion of the federal government since the second World War — by far.

So it’s worth asking how exactly all of this would work and critically, who would pay for it. Elizabeth Warren has been asked that question many times, and every time, she has refused to answer.

CLICK HERE TO GET THE OPINION NEWSLETTER

Marc Lacey, national editor for The New York Times: Will you raise taxes on the middle class to pay for it? Yes or no?

Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass.: The costs will go up for the wealthy and for big corporations and for hard-working middle-class families, costs will go down. Hard-working, middle-class families are going to see their costs go down.

Stephen Colbert, host of “The Late Show”: But will their taxes go up?

Warren: Well — but here’s the thing …

Colbert: But here’s the thing, I’ve listened to these answers a few times before —

George Stephanopoulos, ABC News host: Will middle-class taxes go up? Will private insurance be eliminated?

Warren: Look, what families have to deal with is cost — total cost. That’s what they have to deal with.

Warren: It’s how much are your costs going to go down …

Chris Matthews, host of “Hardball”: No, no. Different question. How much of your taxes go up?

More from Opinion

Warren: No, it’s how much your cost —

Matthews: How is it a different question?

Warren: It is how much families end up spending.

Matthews: I know that argument, but will you pay more in taxes? Why don’t you want to answer that question because as Jake said tonight, that’s a Republican talking point. It’s not a Republican talking point. It’s a question.

Warren: It’s a question about where people are going to come out economically.

Matthews: That’s not my question.

Warren: I spent —

She will not answer. She won’t explain, no matter how hard she has been pressed. And as you just saw, even some fairly strident Democratic partisans have pressed her.

Warren refuses. She will not explain what it would cost or who would pay for it.

Details, like what things cost or whether something is constitutional, or even if the majority of Americans want it, none of that seems to interest Elizabeth Warren anymore.

Well, now we have a credible estimate. According to a study by the Urban Institute, in just the first 10 years, Elizabeth Warren’s “Medicare-for-all” plan would cost an additional $34 trillion.

That sounds like a lot. How much is it? Here’s some perspective.

The Congressional Budget Office anticipates that the United States — the whole United States — will collect just $46 trillion in taxes over the same period. In other words, Elizabeth Warren’s health care plan alone will consume the overwhelming majority of all tax dollars in the United States.

That’s before we spend a single dollar on — I don’t know — Social Security, education, national defense and everything else.

It’s demented.

Now, you should know that the Urban Institute has no motive to attack Elizabeth Warren. It’s not a right-wing think tank. It’s a left-wing think tank. They likely didn’t even account for the cost of one’s pledge to give free health care to every illegal alien who sneaks into the country.

So who is going to pay for all of this? Well, think of it this way: $3.4 trillion a year — that’s the estimated cost. Divide that by 320 million Americans, and you get more than $10,000 per person — not per taxpayer, per person.  That means every child, every retiree, every prison inmate, everybody.

That would be the largest tax assessed in American history by far. Nothing even comes close. That would change everything. An awful lot of people would just leave the country and not come back.

So how do you pay for “Medicare-for-all”? It’s not a minor detail we can settle later. It’s the single most important question about the program. Why do you think we don’t have it already? Because we can’t afford it.

Elizabeth Warren pretends that’s irrelevant — and to her, maybe it is irrelevant.

At some point in the last couple of years, Warren stopped functioning as a conventional senator and became a kind of Messianic figure. Details, like what things cost or whether something is constitutional or even if the majority of Americans want it, none of that seems to interest Elizabeth Warren any more.

Warren has seen the future, and in that future, she has complete and unquestioned control of America. She is the most powerful person in the world.

You can almost hear her repeating the phrase to herself… “The most powerful person in the world.”

It’s intoxicating, clearly.
