Democrats keeping charter schools down in exchange for teacher’s union cash, top activist says

Westlake Legal Group Funds-Cut-Protest Democrats keeping charter schools down in exchange for teacher's union cash, top activist says Nick Givas fox-news/us/education/teachers fox-news/us/democratic-party fox-news/politics/2020-presidential-election fox-news/media/fox-news-flash fox-news/media fox news fnc/media fnc article 79082696-b33d-5143-9a58-50252e03d4fd

As Democrats seeking to unseat President Trump in 2020 call for funding to be diverted from charter schools, National Alliance for Public Charter Schools president Nina Rees accused the party of bowing to teachers’ unions in exchange for sizable campaign contributions.

“The simple answer is that the teachers’ unions are now more powerful than ever before when it comes to Democrat party politics,” she said on the latest edition of “Journal Editorial Report,” which aired Saturday. “The unions have discovered that because our teachers are not unionized, that they have a fewer share of the market than they had before.

“So, increasingly, they’re flexing their muscles,” Rees continued, noting how they spent tens of millions of dollars during the 2016 election cycle. “So, to the extent these Democrats are vying for the support of the teachers’ unions, they’ve discovered that opposing charter schools is one way to get that support.”

Rees said most students in charter schools have been from low-income households and refuted the claim that charter schools chose only the best students, leaving the public school system with harder cases.

CALIFORNIA TEACHERS UNION HAS SPENT $4.3 IN 2019 TO TRY TO STYMIE CHARTER SCHOOLS: REPORT

“Over two-thirds of the students in charter schools are students of color. Over 50 percent are low-income students,” she said. “And, national polls have consistently shown that support among black Democrats and Hispanic Democrats for charter schools is extremely high. For black Democrats, it’s about 50 percent, for Hispanics it’s roughly 50 percent.”

“[Charter] schools have more independence. They have more autonomy to hire the best teachers, to expand the school day and the school year without having to negotiate with a central bureaucracy,” Rees added. “That flexibility is paramount to the achievements that they’re gaining and that is disrupting the system.”

She also said charter schools have been designed for students who had trouble learning and felt left behind by the public school system.

“The majority of the students attending charter schools are students who were traditionally not being served very well by the establishment, by the traditional school districts,” she said. “Most of them are low-income students. A good number of them are special needs students… So they’re going to these schools because these schools are offering a better option than what they were getting in that one-size-fits-all system.”

Rees added, “When you compare apples to apples, you still see that there’s something in the charter school water that is benefiting the students in the system and you certainly don’t want to confine low-income families, in particular, into schools that their parents don’t want them to attend.”

Former Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles suffers broken collarbone in Jaguars debut, out indefinitely

Former Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles suffered a broken clavicle during his first regular-season game as a Jacksonville Jaguar on Sunday afternoon against the Kansas City Chiefs.

In a tough blow for the Jaguars, Foles lasted less than one quarter during the team’s 40-26 loss in Jacksonville on Sunday. They had signed the quarterback this past March to a four-year, $88 million contract with just over $50 million guaranteed, reuniting him with his former coach in Philadelphia, John DeFilippo.

The former Eagle led Philadelphia to a Super Bowl victory over the New England Patriots in February 2018, winning MVP honors in the game after replacing quarterback Carson Wentz, who’d suffered a torn ACL earlier in the season. He also replaced Wentz last year and led the Eagles to the divisional round of the playoffs, before the team lost to the New Orleans Saints.

ANTONIO BROWN USED SOCIAL MEDIA CONSULTANTS TO ACCELERATE RELEASE FROM RAIDERS, REPORT SAYS

Jaguars head coach Doug Marrone confirmed the news to reporters after the game, saying Foles will undergo surgery on Monday. There is no timetable for his return, although it appears the best-case scenario would see him returning in roughly six weeks.

For comparison, Foles broke his collarbone with the Eagles in 2014 and missed eight weeks that season.

“It was unfortunate,” Marrone said after the loss. “You’d really like to see how the game would’ve worked itself out with Nick.”

Foles suffered the injury on a play that saw Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones drive the QB into the ground as Foles released the ball on a 35-yard touchdown pass to DJ Chark.

It was Foles’s first touchdown pass as a Jacksonville Jaguar. The announcers said they felt the play deserved a penalty, but no flag was called.

Foles left the field right away and received X-rays before returning in a sling.

“This one’s worse than 2014, but I’m optimistic it will heal quicker,” Foles said at a postgame news conference in Jacksonville.

One silver lining for the Jaguars was the play of rookie backup quarterback Gardner Minshew, who completed 22 of 25 passes for 275 yards, two touchdowns and one interception while filling in for Foles.

“I was really proud of him for stepping up,” Foles said after the game. “I’m going to be here to help him any way possible.”

Marrone said he felt the same way after the game, while still reserving praise for the rookie quarterback out of Washington State.

“Gardner, I feel better about him now today after Week 1 than I did probably during the preseason,” Marrone said. “I think the work during the preseason might’ve been able to get him ready for something like this. I’m hoping that’s the case.”

The Jaguars are set to travel to Houston next Sunday without Foles in the starting lineup for a game against the division-rival Texans.

Trump To Attend GOP Retreat In Baltimore, City He Called ‘Disgusting’

Westlake Legal Group 5d75725c240000822677c74e Trump To Attend GOP Retreat In Baltimore, City He Called ‘Disgusting’

President Donald Trump will attend a Republican retreat in Baltimore, a city he repeatedly trashed earlier this summer and called a “disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess,” the White House said Sunday.

The White House released a schedule indicating Trump planned to attend the House Republican Conference member retreat, slated for Thursday and Friday. He is supposed to speak at a dinner on Thursday evening, despite his attacks on Baltimore and Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.), who represents a majority-black district.

“Rep, Elijah Cummings has been a brutal bully, shouting and screaming at the great men & women of Border Patrol about conditions at the Southern Border, when actually his Baltimore district is FAR WORSE and more dangerous,” Trump tweeted after the congressman remarked on inhumane conditions at the U.S.-Mexico border.

“Cumming District is a disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess,” Trump added. “If he spent more time in Baltimore, maybe he could help clean up this very dangerous & filthy place.”

Trump also appeared to mock Cummings when his house in Baltimore was burglarized, writing, “Too bad!” in a tweet about the incident shortly after his original attacks.

News broke just days later that House Republicans planned to hold their annual retreat in Baltimore.

Cummings previously said he hoped Trump would pay the city a visit.

“The president is welcome in our district, to go through the 7th Congressional District, and he will see strong people who get up and they go out to work on the early bus,” he said at an event in August.

Mollie Hemingway calls out CNN, hits media’s ‘unbelievable’ coverage of Trump’s ‘Sharpie-gate’

Following President Trump‘s claim that Alabama could have been affected by Hurricane Dorian, The Federalist editor Mollie Hemingway said on “Media Buzz” Sunday that the media’s nonstop coverage of the event was uncalled for — and she specifically called out CNN.

“As people die, CNN and other media outlets are focusing on what, exactly?” she asked. “You almost get the feeling that the media decided at the beginning of the week, they were going to make Trump’s handling of the hurricane a major story.”

She continued, “You shouldn’t have just an oppositional stance as your approach, but you need to have better news judgment than they showed.”

Trump faced media backlash after he was said to have taken a marker and drawn a possible path of the storm that would have affected Alabama. Members of the media proceeded to mock Trump and claimed he was making false statements to the American public.

PERFECT STORY: MEDIA POUND TRUMP OVER ‘SHARPIE-GATE’ HURRICAN MAP

Trump responded on Twitter and kept the issue alive by claiming he had been correct, before blaming the uproar on media bias.

“[Dorian] turned North and went up the coast, where it continues now. In the one model through Florida, the Great State of Alabama would have been hit or grazed. In the path it took, no. Read my FULL FEMA statement. What I said was accurate! All Fake News in order to demean!” Trump tweeted on Thursday.

“Just as I said, Alabama was originally projected to be hit. The Fake News denies it!”

TRUMP DOUBLES DOWN ON CLAIM DORIAN THREATENED ALABAMA, SLAMS MEDIA MOCKERY

Hemingway said the media had no moral high ground when it came to letting things go, and accused them of devoting hours and hours to a story that wasn’t worthy of coverage in the first place.

“It was unbelievable to watch this week, so much coverage devoted to ‘Sharpie-gate,'” she said earlier in the interview. “They say that the president can’t let things go, and that’s absolutely true, but the media are in no position to say that, given how they handle this.”

More from Media

She continued, “This is such a minor point that even if you put the worst construction on it, it does not deserve seven days of coverage, 24 hours, hundreds of stories, front-page news.”

CNN host Brian Stelter tweeted about the story on Sunday and claimed President Trump was purposely being untruthful when he made his remarks.

“The words we use and the frames we choose matter a lot. Here, I argue that the media’s framing of Trump’s Alabama errors actually let the president off easy. This wasn’t ‘Sharpie-gate,’ it was ‘lying about a hurricane-gate,'” he wrote.

CNN did not immediately respond to Fox News’ requests for comment.

Florida day care worker charged in death of 2-year-old left in hot van, officials say

A Florida day care worker, who reportedly failed to follow protocol and switched off a safety alarm in the van she was driving, has been charged in the July death of a 2-year-old boy who’d been left in the sweltering vehicle for hours.

The Broward Sheriff’s Office arrested Engrid Thurston, 46, on Friday. She has been charged with aggravated manslaughter in the death of Noah Sneed.

Thurston reportedly was released on bond Saturday.

Detectives said Thurston picked up Sneed and other children on July 29, adding that she had disengaged a safety alarm in the van that would have alerted her if she left anyone behind.

FLORIDA BOY, 2, DIED IN SWELTERING VAN AT DAYCARE CENTER AFTER DRIVER TURNED OFF SAFETY ALARM, REPORT SAYS

Thurston allegedly shut off the alarm – which would make a sound if passengers were left inside – before letting children out of the van that day.

Sneed was found dead in the parking lot of Ceressa’s Daycare & Preschool in Oakland Park on July 29 after he’d been left inside the vehicle for more than five hours as temperatures soared to around 93 degrees, the Miami Herald reported.

A medical examiner reportedly determined Sneed died of hyperthermia.

HOUSTON DAYCARE BUS DRIVER CHARGED OVER DEATH OF 3-YEAR-OLD IN 113-DEGREE VEHICLE

Sneed’s family was happy to hear an arrest had been made in the case, WPLG reported.

“This was a situation that could have been avoided, if proper procedures and protocol was followed,” Shatavia Symonette, Noah’s aunt, said. “Someone is to blame for it. It was a careless mistake, and we just want to make sure that it doesn’t happen to anybody else.”

Symonette added, “We have no idea [why the alarm was turned off], and those are the questions that we’re still asking.”

If convicted, Thurston could face a possible life sentence for the charge of aggravated manslaughter of a child.

It was not immediately known if Thurston had an attorney.

Dazed and weary, Hurricane Dorian refugees descend on Bahamas capital of Nassau

CLOSEWestlake Legal Group icon_close Dazed and weary, Hurricane Dorian refugees descend on Bahamas capital of Nassau

Search and rescue teams are still trying to reach some Bahamian communities isolated by floodwaters and debris after Hurricane Dorian, while the official death toll has risen to 43 and is likely to increase even more, top officials said. (Sept. 7) AP

NASSAU, Bahamas – They straggle through the door in small groups, uncertainty written across their faces.

A green or yellow band wraps around each person’s wrist. Green bands are for those with someplace to stay the night, maybe with friends or family.

They’re the easy ones.

Yellow bands are harder.

Those wrap the wrists of Hurricane Dorian refugees who have no one to help them here in Nassau, the capital island of this coral archipelago nation still staggered by the biggest hurricane to hit the Bahamas, a terrifyingly violent storm that sat atop neighboring Abaco and Grand Bahama for days.

Nonprofits, from the Red Cross to Rotary and church groups, are rapidly improving refugee processing on Nassau, staged out of a stifling warehouse-size tent filled with donated supplies and energetic volunteers who are processing the wrist-banded refugees.

“They wasn’t doing anything in Abaco. So it’s great to see people caring. It’s so nice,” said evacuee Cecil Grant, 31, as he cradled his sleeping daughter, Yalissa, 7 months.

Family reunited: ‘You’re alive. You’re alive.’ How one family hunted for loved ones amid Dorian’s wreckage

Sunday morning found Grant, his fiancée and their three kids at the shelter at the Nassau airport as evacuation planes and helicopters clattered overhead

Grant’s family slept at a friend’s house Saturday night after an agonizing wait to leave Abaco, where their house was destroyed a week ago. They initially took shelter at a government building but then crashed at a friend’s. Thursday they headed to the Marsh Harbour airport to try to evacuate.

“We walked in the rain to the airport pushing shopping carts with all our luggage,” he said. “We waited all day there and then we walked to where we were. And went back to the airport the next day. And the next day.”

Dorian lashes Canada: 500,000 lose power as unrelenting Dorian marches through Canada

Neither Marsh Harbour nor the Treasure Cay airports have functioning toilets, leaving the hundreds of people waiting there each day without access to running water or sanitary facilities, although volunteers had delivered drinking water and food.

“It was very nasty there,” Grant said.

That was one of the primary drivers for Grant to move his family to Nassau, where he hopes to stay after lining up a job as a landscaper or chef. Rescue workers are now dealing with evacuees in Nassau – 800 came Saturday; 1,000 Sunday via helicopter, boat and airplane – in addition to the existing crisis on Abaco and Grand Bahama.

Doctors have been warning of the health crisis that could easily erupt on those two hard-hit islands, especially Abaco, where a toxic stew of water sits atop one of the largest Marsh Harbour neighborhoods once home to thousands of Haitian immigrants using outhouses for toilets.

Authorities say at least 44 people have died, and the number is expected to rise dramatically as formal search teams begin their work in earnest.

‘Paradise has been turned to hell’: Residents, aid workers in Bahamas deal with Dorian devastation

All day Sunday, refugees poured into the processing center as volunteers asked them to take only a few days’ worth of clothing and children played with donated toys, the immediate crisis past. The sound of Haitian creole began to fill the room as more and more Haitian-born refugees arrived.

Rescue groups are also now reaching Abaco with shiploads of supplies and equipment. The Red Cross expected its cargo boat to arrive in Marsh Harbour on Sunday, bringing both aid and Restoring Family Links teams to help trace missing or out-of-context people.

While cellphones work intermittently in Marsh Harbour, people remaining on the island are scrounging for gasoline to power generators and recharge their phones.

In Nassau, the Red Cross had more than 200 volunteers collecting and distributing supplies and food directly to evacuees and also to government-run shelters.

Ferrying aid: Vintage plane helps carry aid to devastated Bahamas after Hurricane Dorian

USAID Administrator Mark Green met with Bahamian Prime Minister Hubert Minnis on Sunday after briefly touring Abaco, pledging the U.S. government’s full support. The U.S. military is assisting with relief efforts being led by USAID, which has brought in search teams to pick through the rubble while simultaneously preparing for a long road to recovery.

The agency brought in 47 metric tons of relief supplies from the Miami warehouse to help an estimated 44,000 people, USAID officials said, and about $2.8 million has been allocated to support response efforts

“What I was struck by was the focused nature of the devastation,” Green told reporters his meeting with Minnis. “There are parts of Abaco and the Bahamas that don’t show a great deal of damage and then there are clusters of communities that were devastated, almost as if though nuclear bombs were dropped on them. That’s how great the suffering is, the devastation is.

“We recognize that there is a long road ahead,” he said.

Disclaimer: Slightly off-topic.

My bigger concern is how talking about Ruṧsian activity at all has become very hard to do, especially online. Because when someone does, quite frequently a number of accounts come out of the woodwork to try to undercut the comment.

While I don’t condone these attacks at all, this seems like a reasonable and relatively effective, low-cost strategy for hostile actors to engage in, given their vast array of accounts which they can deploy. Might as well use those accounts to undermine anyone talking about their activity, like Mueller, like the FBI, like the intelligence agencies, like Democratic candidates, like individual users, etc.

It’s a sound tactical strategy. I just wish more actual people would notice what’s going on. Just because someone pretends to share your point of view doesn’t mean they are actually on your side. They just pretend to be on the side of everyone so they can then use our biases to their advantage. And other hostile actors have adopted these tactics. Which is a pretty strong sign that there are hostile folks out there who assess that these tactics are very effective.

Edit: FYI, I included the little ṧ in the topic at hand to see if that would reduce the number of attacks. I assume that they are using search tools to find mentions of this term. So perhaps masking it will help. fingers crossed
