Louis Vuitton Director Slams Trump As ‘Joke’ After Visit To Brand’s Texas Workshop

Westlake Legal Group 5dadc9f120000040185064e3 Louis Vuitton Director Slams Trump As ‘Joke’ After Visit To Brand’s Texas Workshop

Louis Vuitton creative director Nicolas Ghesquière had a few choice words for President Donald Trump on Instagram mere days after the president appeared at the opening of a new Louis Vuitton factory in Texas.

On Sunday, the French fashion designer, who has been Vuitton’s creative director since 2013, posted an image of the cover of the 1984 song “High Energy” by Evelyn Thomas alongside these words: “Standing against any political action. I am a fashion designer refusing this association.”

Ghesquière ended the post with the hashtags “#trumpisajoke” and “#homophobia.”

On Thursday, Trump appeared alongside LVMH CEO Bernard Arnault and Louis Vuitton CEO Michael Burke at the opening of a Louis Vuitton workshop in Alvarado, Texas. The facility, which now employs 150, is expected to generate 1,000 jobs over the next five years.

Arnault told Women’s Wear Daily that he’s known Trump since the 1980s and that he was “very honored to have the president of the United States” at the event.

In response to Ghesquiere’s criticism, commenters on the post showing their support included the editor-in-chief of Out magazine Phillip Picardi, editor-in-chief of Interview Nick Haramis, Louis Vuitton’s accessories creative director Camile Miceli, designer Giambattista Valli, trans models Teddy Quinlivan and Indya Moore, and many others.

Canada Votes In Election That Could Be The End For Justin Trudeau

Westlake Legal Group 5dadc5832100004c1d34a944 Canada Votes In Election That Could Be The End For Justin Trudeau

TORONTO (AP) — Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau faced the threat of being knocked from power after one term as the nation held parliamentary elections on Monday.

The 47-year-old Trudeau channeled the star power of his father, the liberal icon and late Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, when he won in 2015 but a combination of scandal and high expectations have damaged his prospects.

Polls indicate Trudeau’s Liberal Party could lose to the rival Conservatives, or perhaps win but still fail to get a majority of seats in Parliament and have to rely on an opposition party to remain in power.

Not in 84 years has a first-term Canadian prime minister with a parliamentary majority lost a bid for re-election.

Trudeau brought his wife and three kids along as he voted in his district in Montreal.

Trudeau reasserted liberalism in 2015 after almost 10 years of Conservative Party government in Canada, but he is one of the few remaining progressive leaders in the world. He has been viewed as a beacon for liberals in the Trump era, even appearing on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine under the headline “Why Can’t He Be Our President?”

Perhaps sensing Trudeau is in trouble, Barack Obama made an unprecedented endorsement by a former American president in urging Canadians to re-elect Trudeau and saying the world needs his progressive leadership now.

But old photos of Trudeau in blackface and brownface surfaced last month, casting doubt on his judgment.

Trudeau also was hurt by a scandal that erupted this year when his former attorney general said he pressured her to halt the prosecution of a Quebec company. Trudeau has said he was standing up for jobs, but the damage gave a boost to the Conservative Party led by Andrew Scheer.

No party is expected to get a majority of Parliament’s 338 seats, so a shaky alliance may be needed to pass legislation.

If Conservatives should win the most seats — but not a majority — they would probably try to form a government with the backing of Quebec’s separatist Bloc Quebecois party. Trudeau’s Liberals would likely rely on the New Democrats to stay in power.

Scheer is a career politician described by those in his own party as bland, a possible antidote for those tired of Trudeau’s flash. Scheer, 40, calls Trudeau a phony who can’t even recall how many times he has worn blackface.

Jason Kenney, Alberta’s premier and a close friend of Scheer, calls the Conservative leader “an extremely normal Canadian” who is so nice he “can’t fake being mean.”

Scheer, however, has so relentlessly attacked Trudeau that Nik Nanos, a Canadian pollster, said he hasn’t been himself.

“Scheer has been hostage to the message,” Nanos said. “His campaign has made him into an attack machine.”

Conservative supporters chanted “Lock him up! Lock him up!” at a rally Saturday after Scheer said he would investigate Trudeau’s attorney general scandal — mirroring the Hillary Clinton “Lock her up!” chant popular at Donald Trump rallies. Scheer moved to calm the crowd and changed the chant to “Vote him out.”

Trudeau embraced immigration at a time when the U.S. and other countries are closing their doors, and he legalized cannabis nationwide.

His efforts to strike a balance on the environment and the economy have been criticized by both the right and left. He brought in a carbon tax to fight climate change but rescued a stalled pipeline expansion project to get Alberta’s oil to international markets.

His also negotiated a new free trade deal for Canada with the U.S. and Mexico amid threats by President Donald Trump to scrap it.

Scheer is promising to end the carbon tax and cut government spending, including foreign aid, by 25%.

“That money belongs to you, not to them,” Scheer said.

A 2-year-old girl was fatally shot in Philadelphia on Sunday in a particularly disturbing act of violence — mere hours after an 11-month-old boy in the city was shot four times, police said.

The unidentified toddler was at home in the Kensington neighborhood when, around 3:30 p.m., officials say someone with a rifle entered the home and shot three people, including the child.

PENNSYLVANIA 11-MONTH-OLD SHOT 4 TIMES WHILE SITTING IN CAR, POLICE SAY

The toddler was struck once in the back of the head and pronounced dead minutes later, WTXF-TV reported.

Her death, which reportedly makes her the 278th person to be killed in the city this year, came less than 24 hours after an infant was shot four times while sitting in a car with his stepmother in Hunting Park. The baby in that incident was hit in the back of the head, in the chest, and twice in the buttocks around 7:15 p.m. on Saturday. As of Monday, he was still listed in critical condition.

Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney tweeted that he’s “outraged, disgusted, and heartbroken by the violence this weekend that claimed the life of an innocent 2-year-old and left another infant fighting for his life,” and said residents “should not live in fear of violence that could take away a child’s life.”

“With the unabated flow of illegal guns and drugs, we must do whatever we can locally to address violence and help residents,” Kenney said. “We’ll have teams in the neighborhoods impacted by this weekend’s violence to provide support and trauma-informed care.”

Christine Coulter, the acting commissioner of the Philadelphia Police Department, said she’s “never seen anything like it, it’s something you can’t unsee.”

Shortly before the 11-month-old was shot Saturday, three men were injured a few blocks away in another shooting. It wasn’t immediately clear if the shootings were connected, and authorities said no arrests have been made.

$260 Million Opioid Settlement Reached at Last Minute With Big Drug Companies

Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd Suits and Litigation (Civil) Opioids and Opiates McKesson Corporation Drugs (Pharmaceuticals) Deaths (Fatalities) Cardinal Health Inc Attorneys General AmerisourceBergen Corp

CLEVELAND — The three major drug distributors and an opioid manufacturer have reached a settlement worth $260 million to avoid the landmark first federal opioid trial that was set to begin here Monday.

Judge Dan A. Polster of the Northern District of Ohio announced from the bench Monday morning that the deal was struck around 1 a.m.

People familiar with the discussions said a settlement to resolve thousands of other cases brought by local governments and states could be announced later in the day by state attorneys general, but Judge Polster confirmed only the settlement of this first landmark trial.

To settle the case, the drug distributors — McKesson, Cardinal Health and AmerisourceBergen — will pay $215 million to the two Ohio counties that brought the case, people familiar with the agreement said. Teva, the Israel-based manufacturer of generic drugs, is expected to pay $20 million in cash and donate $25 million worth of addiction treatment drugs.

The settlement is the latest in a flurry of agreements reached by drug companies to avoid the landmark federal trial, which was to serve as a test case for legal arguments and evidence in a yearslong attempt to hold the pharmaceutical industry accountable for an epidemic of addiction to opioid painkillers that has killed hundreds of thousands of Americans.

Other companies who already reached a settlement to avoid that trial include Johnson & Johnson; Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals, one of the biggest manufacturers of generic opioids; and Purdue Pharma, which has been widely blamed for igniting the opioids crisis with misleading marketing of its drug OxyContin.

The ultimate goal of all companies is to reach a so-called global settlement to resolve all the cases still on the runway in federal and state courts. Purdue reached a tentative settlement to do just that in September — a deal that involves a cash payment of up to $4.5 billion from its owners, members of the Sackler family, and a restructuring of the company into a public entity that would donate all profits to cities, counties and states to compensate for costs associated with the epidemic. But that deal is mired in a long bankruptcy court process.

On Monday morning, the drug distributors, Teva and other companies were still working to reach a global deal worth nearly $50 billion in cash and donated addiction treatments. Talks to do so had reached an impasse on Friday but people familiar with the negotiations said on Monday that they were continuing.

In announcing the settlement of the Ohio trial in court on Monday morning, Judge Polster appeared to nudge the parties to keep working. “I did not encourage the settlement of this trial only,” he said, noting that the parties and negotiators were in the courthouse all day Friday and into the evening to discuss the larger settlement.

He said he understood that the parties will keep trying, adding that he hoped that “we don’t lose the momentum that was created.”

This developing story will be updated.

Antarctica’s ice sheets contain radioactive chlorine gas 60 years after nuclear tests, study says

An explosive new study has found that nearly 60 years after nuclear tests were performed in the Pacific Ocean, radioactive chlorine is still leaking from ice sheets in Antarctica.

The research says that chlorine-36 has been found in the Vostok portion of the continent after it traveled there following the weapons testing in the Pacific.

“There is no more nuclear chlorine-36 in the global atmosphere. That is… why we should observe natural chlorine-36 levels everywhere,” said one of the study’s co-authors, Mélanie Baroni, in a statement.

WORSE THAN CHERNOBYL: PARTS OF MARSHALL ISLANDS HAVE RADIATION ‘HIGHER’ THAN CATASTROPHIC ’86 DISASTER, STUDIES SAY

Researchers tested two different areas in Antarctica to determine the level of chlorine-36, Talos Dome, as well as Vostok.

In Talos Dome, the radioactive isotope declined in the period between 1910 and 1980, whereas Vostok did not.

“In the late 1950s this anthropogenic pulse led to an increase of 36Cl concentration at Talos Dome that was more than 100 times higher than the pre‐ and post‐bomb values,” the study abstract states. “It is noteworthy that the atmosphere of Vostok remains polluted by anthropogenic 36Cl today.”

The abstract continued: “This pollution results from gaseous H36Cl mobility at low accumulation sites and implies re‐emission of 36Cl from the snowpack that is not observed at Talos Dome.”

At the end of 1980, chlorine-36 was four times as high as expected in Talos Dome. By 2008, chlorine-36 levels at Vostok were nearly 10 times as what would have been expected naturally, the researchers found, an indication it was still being leaked into the environment.

The research has been published in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres.
