‘Stranger Things’ Helps Netflix Increase Subscribers

Westlake Legal Group merlin_157532550_ac08aaf2-14c0-4b92-9a0a-333c2c0373fc-facebookJumbo ‘Stranger Things’ Helps Netflix Increase Subscribers Netflix Inc Company Reports

Netflix has stemmed the bleeding. The streaming juggernaut overcame its rare moment of weakness from last quarter to add 6.8 million new customers, with 520,000 in the United States in the three months that ended in September.

The rebound, after a loss of 126,000 customers domestically earlier in the year, helped Netflix recover some investor confidence as it faces an onslaught of new streaming competitors.

The third-quarter results were slightly lower than the company’s forecast. Netflix had been expected to add about seven million customers, with 800,000 in the United States. The stock jumped more than 8 percent in after-hours trading Wednesday. The company’s market value had dropped sharply since its last earnings announcement in July, with shares having traded down more than 20 percent.

The company also reported a profit of $665 million on $5.2 billion in revenue.

Netflix, led by the chief executive, Reed Hastings, forecast a healthy rate of growth for the rest of the year. The company said it expected to add 7.6 million total new customers in the next quarter, with about 600,000 for the United States. That was below the 9.4 million that Wall Street had expected and is an indication of the pending competition.

The third-quarter results benefited from Netflix’s best-known series, “Stranger Things,” which debuted its hugely anticipated third season over the Fourth of July weekend. The series drew 64 million viewers in the first four weeks it was available, according to the company.

Netflix, which started as a DVD-by-mail service, has become a dominant force in Hollywood, and its disruptive growth has reordered the television landscape. It often outspends its rivals and has forced the industry’s biggest players to embrace streaming as they abandon, albeit slowly, the pay-television model.

Netflix is the nation’s largest digital television network, with over 158 million customers around the world, including 60 million in the United States.

That audience has become critically important as well-financed competitors wait in the wings. On Nov. 1, Apple plans to unveil its streaming product, Apple TV Plus; 11 days later, the Walt Disney Company intends to start Disney Plus, which will feature Marvel’s biggest franchises, the complete “Star Wars” library and the Disney content vault.

In a cheeky marketing stunt, Disney owned Twitter for a few hours on Monday when it promoted its service on an epic Twitter thread with a seemingly endless string of titles (both famous and obscure) that will appear on Plus. Not to be outdone, Jennifer Aniston, who stars in Apple’s new signature series, “The Morning Show,” drew Instagram’s attention Tuesday when she finally joined the social platform.

Both streamers will come stocked with original films and series, and both will cost about half the price of Netflix. (By early next year, Netflix will face another competitor: AT&T’s HBO Max.)

The competition suggests that the more important consideration in its financial report is Netflix’s expectation for the current quarter, which is also traditionally its most lucrative period with the most new subscribers.

But Netflix plans a new line of attack at the end of the year. It will release more than half a dozen high-profile features over the coming months, including Michael Bay’s “6 Underground,” Eddie Murphy’s “Dolemite Is My Name” and perhaps its most ambitious screen effort to date, Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman,” which cost $159 million.

8.3 Million Watched Ohio Democratic Debate on Television

Westlake Legal Group 15debate-livebriefing-postpromo-facebookJumbo-v2 8.3 Million Watched Ohio Democratic Debate on Television United States Politics and Government Television Ratings (Audience Measurement) Primaries and Caucuses Presidential Election of 2020 News and News Media New York Times Democratic Party Debates (Political) CNN

WESTERVILLE, Ohio — The Democratic debate stage is getting bigger, but television ratings are getting smaller.

The primary debate on Tuesday night in Ohio, co-sponsored by CNN and The New York Times, drew about 8.3 million live television viewers on CNN, Nielsen said on Wednesday. The event featured 12 candidates, up from the 10 who debated last month in Houston at an event seen by about 14 million people on ABC News and Univision.

Interest in the 2020 presidential race is clearly strong. The 8.3 million people who watched on Tuesday roughly equaled the number of viewers for a 2008 matchup between Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, days before the so-called Super Tuesday primary night.

But the three-hour Ohio event — which featured a cavalcade of candidates attacking Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts — did not perform much better than this year’s lowest-rated primary debate, a CNN forum in late July in Detroit with 8.2 million viewers.

Some viewers may be growing tired of watching an oversize Democratic field. A dozen candidates qualified for Tuesday’s debate, based on criteria set by Democratic officials, who are keen to avoid any suggestion of skewing their party’s presidential contest.

This was also the first debate to be held since the start of the fall TV season, when viewers flock to new episodes of their favorite shows. Over all, the Ohio debate — which was also competing with Game 4 of the National League Championship Series — was the third-most-viewed program on television on Tuesday, behind episodes of “N.C.I.S.” and “F.B.I.” on CBS.

Online viewership is not included in Nielsen numbers, and many people most likely watched via Facebook and other streaming venues. CNN said that at any given minute of Tuesday’s debate, an average of 450,000 people were watching on CNN.com or nytimes.com.

Held in a converted gymnasium at Otterbein University in Ohio, the event featured the most candidates ever assembled on a primary debate stage. Producers faced a difficult task in choreographing the stage, but for the most part, the night went smoothly.

The moderating team — Erin Burnett and Anderson Cooper, of CNN, and a television newcomer, Marc Lacey, the national editor of The Times — kept outbursts and interruptions to a minimum. The journalists also stepped back at times to allow the candidates to engage one another directly. Organizers granted 75 seconds for each candidate to respond to questions, up from 60 seconds for the last round of CNN debates.

Candidates were at their lecterns for the 8 p.m. start time, and the questions began immediately. It was a more restrained approach than CNN’s debates in Detroit, which featured a singing of the national anthem in prime time and a Hollywood-style introductory video that some mocked as hyperbolic.

This was also the year’s first Democratic debate to start with questions about President Trump and his behavior in the White House. Earlier debates began with a detailed policy discussion about health care.

The next Democratic debate, on Nov. 20 in Georgia, will be broadcast on MSNBC, with The Washington Post as a co-sponsor.

Lindsey Graham pledges to be Trump’s ‘worst nightmare’ on Syria if necessary

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., is an outspoken supporter of the Trump administration. But on Wednesday, he fired off a series of criticisms aimed at President Trump, in response to the commander-in-chief’s previous statements about the senator’s foreign policy.

His comments came after the president dismissed Graham’s criticism at a press conference, saying that the South Carolina senator would want the U.S. to stay in the Middle East for a “thousand years.” He also claimed that Graham’s constituents wanted to bring U.S. troops home rather than leave them in Syria.

Graham, considered a foreign policy hawk, has been critical of Trump’s decision to pull U.S. troops from Syria and claimed the president was responsible for Kurdish deaths after Turkey’s incursion into the country. Kurds worked with U.S. forces in recent efforts to beat down the Islamic State terror group in the region.

ON SYRIA, TRUMP ACCUSES GRAHAM OF WANTING ‘TO STAY IN THE MIDDLE EAST FOR THE NEXT THOUSAND YEARS’

According to NBC, Graham refused to back down on the issue and warned that conflict in Syria could be a “defining moment” for Trump.

More from Media

“I will do anything I can to help him, but I will also become President Trump’s worst nightmare. I will not sit along the sidelines and watch a good ally, the Kurds, be slaughtered by Turkey.”

“This is a defining moment for President Trump. He needs to up his game,” he reportedly said.

The senator also tweeted several times on Wednesday, warning that Trump’s diplomacy could make Syria like Iraq after former President Barack Obama decided to leave.

In an apparent message to Trump, Graham said he would never be quiet on issues related to national security. He tweeted his fear that the Syria conflict could become a “complete and utter national security disaster.”

Graham added that Trump was in conflict not only with him, but also with his own advisers. “Mr. President, forget about what I’m saying about Syria,” he tweeted. “Listen to your own national security team who are telling you the consequences of your decision and the impact it will have on our nation.”

Sandy Hook denier ordered to pay $450K to victim’s dad for book that claimed ‘Nobody Died’

CLOSEWestlake Legal Group icon_close Sandy Hook denier ordered to pay $450K to victim's dad for book that claimed 'Nobody Died'

Infowars host and conspiracy theorist Alex Jones says a “form of psychosis” caused him to believe that the Sandy Hook massacre was staged. Nathan Rousseau Smith has the story. Buzz60, Buzz60

A conspiracy theorist who co-wrote a book claiming the 2012 Sandy Hook school shooting never happened must pay $450,000 to a father of a boy killed in the shootings.

The jury’s decision followed a ruling in July that James Fetzer and Mike Palacek, who co-authored a book titled “Nobody Died at Sandy Hook,” defamed Leonard Pozner, whose six-year-old son Noah was among the 26 victims in the December 2012 shooting in Newtown, Connecticut.

Fetzer, a retired University of Minnesota Duluth professor, was ordered to pay damages. He called the amount “absurd,” and said he would appeal. Palacek settled with Pozner last month, but those terms were unclear.

In the book, Fetzer and Palacek claimed that Pozner fabricated copies of his son’s death certificate. Fetzer also alleged that the massacre was “a FEMA drill.”

After the ruling, Pozner thanked the jury “for recognizing the pain and terror that Mr. Fetzer has purposefully inflicted on me and on other victims of these horrific mass casualty events, like the Sandy Hook shooting,” per the Wisconsin State Journal.

Pozner has previously said that his family has been threatened and harassed as a result of the conspiracy theories leveled against him, including on a memorial website dedicated to his son.

He took action against Infowars conspiracy theorist Alex Jones last year, filing an anti-defamation lawsuit against Jones. Jones, who was banned from Facebook and YouTube in 2018, insinuated that the Sandy Hook shooting was fabricated.

That case is still pending.

WASHINGTON – Congressional Democrats walked out of a White House meeting on Syria Wednesday, claiming President Donald Trump was demeaning to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

““He was insulting, particularly to the speaker. He called her a ‘third-rate politician,'” said Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y. “This was not a dialogue, it was sort of a diatribe.”

Pelosi said Trump was “shaken up” by having lost most Republicans in a Wednesday vote condemning Trump’s decision to withdraw U.S. troops from Syria,

“What we witnessed on the part of the president was a meltdown, sad to say,” Pelosi said.

The move came soon after the House overwhelmingly passed bipartisan resolution condemning Trump’s decision to withdraw U.S. troops from Syria, all but clearing the way for Turkey to invade territory held by the U.S.-allied Kurds.

White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham called Pelosi’s decision to walk out “baffling, but not surprising.”

“Speaker Pelosi had no intention of listening or contributing to an important meeting on national security issues,” Grisham said in a statement. “While Democratic leadership chose to storm out and get in front of the cameras to whine, everyone else in the meeting chose to stay in the room and work on behalf of this country.”

Democrats said Pelosi left after Trump called her a third-rate politician, but not before Pelosi said she responded: “I wish you were a politician, Mr. President. Then you would know the art of the possible.”

‘The Kurds are being slaughtered’: House votes to condemn President Trump’s troop pullout from Syria

Schumer said some lawmakers from both parties stayed behind, as he did initially, because he wanted to ask a question.

Democrats are also complaining that the administration has cancelled a briefing for lawmakers on Syria that had been scheduled for Thursday.

Alec Baldwin doesn’t think parents involved in college admissions scandal ‘should go to prison’

Alec Baldwin is the latest celebrity to chime in with his opinion on the college admissions scandal.

The Emmy winner tweeted on Wednesday that he believes parents involved in the bribery shouldn’t wind up in prison.

“I don’t think anyone involved in the college fraud cases should go to prison,” the actor wrote. “That includes past cases as well. Community service, fines, yes. But prison time, no. My heart goes out to Felicity, Bill Macy and their family.”

Felicity Huffman surrendered herself over to authorities on Tuesday afternoon and began her prison stint at the Federal Correctional Institution in Dublin, Calif.

The actress was sentenced to 14 days for her role in the college admissions scandal after pleading guilty in May.

Baldwin faced backlash online for his opinion. One user wrote, “While I agree with the general sentiment, the fact remains that privileged individuals like Lori [Loughlin] and Felicity are treated differently by the law. And until we reach a bit of equity, I’m 100% ok with them serving time.”

“Fines. Seriously??? When do fines punish the wealthy?” offered someone else.

Baldwin didn’t stand down, though. He clapped back: “Community service is better. The demonization of wealth in this country is mind blowing. A country built on both freedoms and commerce. Now, all success is scrutinized. Merely to succeed, especially financially, invites scrutiny, judgment, abuse.”

“She will begin serving the remainder of the sentence Judge Talwani imposed — one year of supervised release, with conditions including 250 hours of community service — when she is released.”

Jason Momoa celebrated the news that Zoë Kravitz has been cast as Catwoman in a sweet post on Instagram on Tuesday.

The “Aquaman” actor said he is “stoked” about his stepdaughter’s upcoming role in the new Batman movie.

Momoa is married to actress Lisa Bonet, who had Kravitz, 30, with her ex-husband, Lenny Kravitz. Bonet and Momoa have two children together, Lola and Nakoa-Wolf.

“I’m so proud of u zozo bear,” Momoa wrote about Kravitz in the post’s caption accompanied by a photo of them together. “On and off screen OHANA. DC WB ohana Lola and Wolfies big sister is CAT WOMAN. Unbelievable so freaking stoked.”

News broke earlier this week that Kravitz had been cast to play Catwoman in the upcoming “The Batman,” starring Robert Pattinson in the title role. The movie, directed by Matt Reeves, is slated to hit theaters in June 2021.

Kravitz joins a list of actors who have played Catwoman in films over the years, including Anne Hathaway, Halle Berry, Michelle Pfeiffer and Lee Meriwether. Eartha Kitt and Julie Newmar played Catwoman in the “Batman” TV series in the 1960s.

Pfeiffer recently gave Kravitz some sound advice about her upcoming role during her appearance on “Good Morning America” this week.

“Make sure whilst designing the costume, they consider how you’re going to go to the bathroom,” Pfeiffer said, before adding, “Minor detail.”
