Biden zings Buttigieg: ‘This guy’s not a Barack Obama’

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Former Vice President Joe Biden, coming off a lackluster fourth-place finish in Iowa and sliding in the latest polls in New Hampshire ahead of Tuesday’s primary, took aim on Saturday at rising 2020 rival Pete Buttigieg.

Speaking with reporters at a news conference at a Biden campaign field office in New Hampshire’s largest city, the former vice president vehemently disagreed with comparisons between the former South Bend, Ind., mayor and Biden’s boss for eight years, former President Barack Obama.

BUTTTIGIEG ON THE RISE IN NEW HAMPSHIRE AS HE TRIES TO GO TWO FOR TWO

“This guy’s not a Barack Obama. Barack Obama had been a United States senator of a really large state,” Biden said. “This is a very different situation.”

Biden spoke with reporters hours after his campaign went up with a new digital ad suggesting the 38-year old candidate — who’s four decades younger than Biden — doesn’t have enough experience to be president.

The spot uses a clip of then-President Obama calling Biden “the best vice president America’s ever had” before going on to compare crucial successes of the Obama administration with mundane mayoral actions by Buttigieg, such as installing “decorative lights under bridges.”

The Buttigieg campaign, as well as a number of mayors who’ve endorsed Buttigieg, decried the ad.

Buttigieg’s gaining moment waso beating expectations in Iowa after he tied Sen. Bernie Sanders, as the results dribbled in the days after Monday’s caucuses due to a technical reporting debacle.

BIDEN MOCKS BUTTIGIEG IN NEW DIGITAL VIDEO

Buttigieg has repeatedly emphasized his outside-the-Beltway experience, and his campaign spotlighted that while “Washington politics trivializes what goes on in communities like South Bend, South Bend residents who now have better jobs, rising income and new life in their city don’t think their lives are a Washington politician’s punchline.”

And the campaign argued that the “Vice President’s decision to run this ad speaks more to where he currently stands in this race than it does about Pete’s perspective as a mayor and veteran.”

Asked about his campaign’s digital video, Biden explained: “What I’m doing is responding to what Pete’s been saying for the last two months, that all the problems we have today are from the recent past.”

“When you get attacked, you have to respond. I kept my mouth shut for a long time. I haven’t responded at all. But it’s been constant, a constant assertion that the problems we’re facing today are somehow because of our administration. That’s simply not true,” Biden said.

And jabbing at Buttigieg, the former vice president said: “He’s a good guy. He was a great mayor. But he was a mayor. He was a good guy. But the idea of passing a budget as mayor of a town the size of Manchester and managing $900 billion with less than one percent fraud or abuse, and picking up his city and thousands of cities across the country, is ridiculous.

SANDERS HAS THE EDGE, BUT BUTTIGIEG SOARING IN LATEST POLLS IN NH

Biden seemed to downplayed expectations in New Hampshire, which holds the first primary in the White House race, at the start of Friday night’s Democratic presidential nomination debate.

“I took a hit in Iowa and I’m probably going to take a hit here,” the former vice president said at the debate, just days before the primary race.

Biden’s comments came hours after top aides also seemed to minimize the importance of New Hampshire, highlighting in a statement that “the campaign has had a very clear strategy from the day we got into the race.”

“We have articulated that we believe for us the pathway to the nomination runs in particular through Nevada, South Carolina, Super Tuesday, through states that have a more diverse electorate, where Vice President Biden has a tremendous amount of support,” the campaign added.

When asked by Fox News if he’s writing off New Hampshire, Biden pushed back, saying: “I’m not writing off New Hampshire. I’m going to campaign like hell here in New Hampshire, as I’m going to do in Nevada, in South Carolina and beyond. Look, this is just getting going here. This is a marathon.”

He also said that he’s best-equipped to beat President Trump in crucial Rust Belt swing states that Trump narrowly won in 2016 in capturing the White House.

“Look at the polling, what the polling data shows who can win Pennsylvania going away. Who can win in Michigan. Who can win in Florida. Come on man,” he insisted.

And taking aim at Buttigieg — whose struggles to resonate with black voters has been well-documented — Biden said: “You can’t win without that. Flat out. You can’t win without it.

Biden also pointed to national polls in the Democratic nomination race, saying “I’m still winning nationally.”

Asked about his mindset, the former vice president responded that “my spirits are up. Look at all the endorsement I’ve got since Iowa.”

And seeming to downplay the delayed results from Monday’s Iowa caucuses — due to a reporting debacle — Biden spotlighted that “I don’t think we should be drawing a lot of conclusions from Iowa.”

The Democratic National Committee’s (DNC’s) and “corporate media partners'” game of favorites with fellow Democratic candidates like billionaire Michael Bloomberg is “wrong,” 2020 presidential candidate Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, D-Hawaii, said Saturday.

Appearing on “Cavuto Live” with host Neil Cavuto, Gabbard said the fact that a billionaire like Bloomberg could enter the race with the influence to change DNC rules to “coincidentally” benefit his candidacy does a disservice to the American electorate.

The DNC recently decided to eliminate its controversial fundraising requirement for candidates to qualify for the debate stage.

WHERE DOES TULSI GABBARD STAND ON THE ISSUES?

“The fact that a billionaire can come in and have that kind of influence to change rules of the DNC — all of a sudden, not coincidentally, to be able to benefit Michael Bloomberg — while voters here in New Hampshire and across the country are saying, ‘Hey, we want to be able to make the best-informed decision possible before we go in and cast our vote’ understanding the seriousness of this election, but they are not able to do so, so long as both the DNC and some of the corporate media partners are enacting these rules where they are playing favorites… They are picking winners and losers before voters have the opportunity to do so,” the 38-year-old combat veteran said.

Gabbard’s team has announced that it is protesting CNN after the network snubbed the candidate from a Democratic town hall just days before the New Hampshire primary on Tuesday.

“This attempt to silence Tulsi is bigger than one person — it’s our right as voters to hear from ALL the candidates, and to have our voices represented. No institution should be allowed to get away with censoring democracy: That’s why we’re standing up to CNN on Wednesday, February 5th, demanding that our voices be heard,” her campaign said.

In addition, Gabbard told Cavuto that she definitely has an uphill battle ahead of her, what he termed the “odd woman out” going “against the tide” and fighting the Washington, D.C., elite.

Most notably, Gabbard is suing former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for defamation in a $50 million lawsuit. Gabbard’s lawyer told Fox News on Thursday that one of Clinton’s lawyers has finally accepted legal documents in connection with the suit.

“If you’re looking at the powerful elite in Washington, absolutely. I, and so many people across the country, are challenging the powerful elite who have shown they are not working for the best interest of the people,” Gabbard said.

“So, we are calling for the truth. We are calling for a straightforward process for voters to make sure that their voices are heard in this democracy,” she added. “And so, that we can actually have a government that’s of, by and for the people — not of, by and for the powerful elite in Washington.”

New Details Released On Kobe Bryant Helicopter Crash

Westlake Legal Group 5e3f2b6b270000ea0738b940 New Details Released On Kobe Bryant Helicopter Crash

Engine failure does not appear to be a factor in the helicopter crash that killed Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna along with seven others last month, the National Transportation Safety Board said Friday.

Intense fog is thought to have been a major factor in the accident that occurred on hilly terrain near Calabasas, California. Although the weather had grounded police helicopters in the area, Bryant’s pilot had received special clearance to fly in difficult conditions shortly before takeoff.

The aircraft, a Sikorsky S-76B, slammed into a hill where it was “destroyed by impact forces and fire,” the NTSB said. Its engine appeared to be working, as an examination of “the main and tail rotor assemblies found damage consistent with powered rotation at the time of impact,” according to the agency.

At the initial point of impact, investigators found “highly fragmented cabin and cockpit debris,” while the main wreckage was found 127 feet away and consisted of the tail, both engines, avionics boxes and portions of the cockpit instrument panel. The cockpit “experienced extreme fragmentation” and its instrument panel was destroyed.

The entire cabin, along with both engines, burst into flames after the crash, the agency said.

Pilot Ara Zobayan, who served as chief pilot for Island Express Helicopters, the company that operated the craft, had logged more than 8,000 hours of flight time and worked as a flight instructor. But even experienced pilots can become confused in dense fog, and once that happens, it leaves just seconds for a reaction.

“Once you get disoriented, your body senses completely tell you the wrong thing. You have no idea which way is up or down,” Randy Waldman, a helicopter flight instructor in Los Angeles, told The Associated Press.

“A lot of times, somebody who’s doing it for a living is pressured to get their client to where they have to go,” Waldman explained. “They take chances that maybe they shouldn’t take.”

Bryant, 41, was headed to his Mamba Sports Academy ― a youth sports center he founded in Thousand Oaks, California ― where Gianna, 13, was supposed to play a basketball game on Jan. 26. Bryant frequently chartered the Sikorsky to avoid traffic.

Also aboard was Orange Coast College’s head baseball coach, John Altobelli, his wife, Keri, and their daughter Alyssa; Christina Mauser, a coach at the youth sports center; and parent Sarah Chester and her daughter Payton.

“Our investigators have already developed a substantial amount of evidence about the circumstances of this tragic crash,” NTSB Chairman Robert L. Sumwalt said in a statement. “And we are confident that we will be able to determine its cause as well as any factors that contributed to it so we can make safety recommendations to prevent accidents like this from occurring again.”

The agency plans to eventually issue a full report.

The helicopter was not required to have a flight data recorder or cockpit voice recorder and did not have either device. The NTSB noted in its statement, however, that it has been telling the Federal Aviation Administration for 20 years that such recorders should be required on helicopters.

A memorial for Bryant will be held Feb. 24 at Los Angeles’ Staples Center, his former home court. The date represents his last jersey number.

Thousands of couples tie knot in mass wedding amid coronavirus fears

Coronavirus fears took a back seat to marital bliss in South Korea on Friday as nearly 6,000 couples from 64 countries — some wearing face masks — tied the knot in a mass Unification Church wedding.

“It would be a lie if I said I was not concerned at all about the infection,” Choi Ji-Young, 21, told Agence France-Presse (AFP). “But I feel like I will be protected from the virus today.”

The 21-year-old, who met her hubby only two months ago when matched by the church, added: “I am overwhelmed that I am getting married today.”

South Korea has recorded 24 cases of coronavirus, which emerged in neighboring China, where more than 31,000 cases have been confirmed after first emerging in the city of Wuhan.

The church decided to proceed with the event because it had been “four years in the making,” as part of the celebrations of the 100th anniversary of church founder Sun Myung Moon’s birth, spokesman Jang Young-chul told the AFP.

But followers from China were asked not to come, he said.

The church also distributed face masks to the 30,000-strong crowd — but only some actually wore them at the Gapyeong event, where a festive mood prevailed.

Kim Chang-seong, 27, who was marrying a woman he met only 20 days ago, said he was not worried about infection because the mass wedding had “special meaning” for him.

“By marrying a fellow church believer, I am taking a path paved by our church leaders,” he told AFP.

Mass weddings have long been signature events of the church, whose followers have been dubbed “Moonies” after its founder, who died in 2012.

People who choose to be matched by the church must confirm under oath that they are virgins — and must refrain from sexual relations for a minimum of 40 days after their wedding.

Dan Gainor: Anti-Trump media have a meltdown after president responds to impeachment acquittal

Westlake Legal Group image Dan Gainor: Anti-Trump media have a meltdown after president responds to impeachment acquittal fox-news/politics/trump-impeachment-inquiry fox-news/person/donald-trump fox-news/opinion fox-news/media fox news fnc/opinion fnc Dan Gainor b947b65b-461c-5d4f-995b-706feff9de7d article

Love is never having to say you’re sorry. Hate, on the other hand, demands an apology.

That’s how the vengeful anti-Trump media handled the post-impeachment week – expecting an apology from President Trump.

The Washington Post was typical, tweeting out a reminiscence from the Clinton impeachment. “After impeachment acquittal, Bill Clinton was ‘profoundly sorry.’ Trump not so much.” The “CBS Evening News” reported that Trump “was not contrite.”

SEAN HANNITY ON THE PRESIDENT’S CRITICS: ‘THEY ALL LIVE IN A BUBBLE’

Of course, Trump has also maintained his innocence. But the left-wing media hate the president too much to give him the benefit of the doubt. So they skewered him.

It wasn’t just the lack of apology that infuriated the media. Everything Trump did the rest of the week set them off – from speaking at the National Prayer Breakfast to a victory lap event at the White House celebrating his acquittal in his Senate impeachment trial.

Then Friday night Trump removed officials who he didn’t feel he could work with and journalists went ballistic once more.

More from Opinion

CNN’s new White House Correspondent John Harwood may have already set the world’s record for the most bizarre thing said in the first few days on a job. Any job. His take on Trump’s victory celebration was the icing on the cake. Speaking about Trump, Harwood said: “It was dark because he’s made clear that his mind is dark. This is somebody in deep psychological distress right now. Self-pitying, insecure, angry.”

A 2009 New York Times article said that Harwood had studied both history and economics at Duke University. It didn’t say anything about him getting a psychology degree.

Harwood’s network joined him, slamming the event conservatives found entertaining. Anchor Brianna Keilar was ever-so neutral in her description: “You have been watching the president of the United States with an unscripted, vindictive, at times profane, angry, rambling response to his impeachment acquittal.”

CNN’s Chief Political Analyst Gloria Borger followed that with equal viciousness, saying Trump began with “an avalanche of grievance.” She said the speech was “was vindictive.” Borger added: “It was full of revenge, it was mean-spirited, it was poisonous, it was spiteful.”

That kind of demented commentary was commonplace.

Vanity Fair highlighted “THE MOST DERANGED MOMENTS” from Trump’s victory celebration. Esquire called the event “Mind-Numbing” and “His Most Unhinged Speech to Date.” MSNBC anchor Nicolle Wallace described Team Trump, saying, “it’s not a team, it’s a Mafia family.”

The week was filled with hyperbolic reactions to all things Trump.

CNN’s Chief White House Correspondent Jim Acosta warned Point Park University students of the threat Trump posed to journalists. Acosta cautioned about “the moment that there’s a dead journalist on the side of the highway, because of the rhetoric coming out of the White House from the president of the United States.”

The Washington Post led its front page with a new round of fighting, declaring: “In acquittal’s wake, a surge of hostilities.” Another story said Trump was targeting “perceived enemies over impeachment.” No matter where you stand on impeachment, people who tried to destroy Trump probably count as real “enemies.” Not just “perceived” ones.

CNN even seemed to be drumming up support for Impeachment Part II. Chief National Correspondent John King told viewers that “double jeopardy does not apply in politics.” That means Congress could go after Trump again.

As the week ended and Trump’s opponents were pushed out of the administration, the media’s fury became volcanic. Both CNN and MSNBC called it a “Friday night massacre.”

Trump recalled U.S. Ambassador to the European Union Gordon Sondland and reassigned Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, removing him from the National Security Council staff. MSNBC anchor Ali Velshi argued the moves were “a campaign of retribution and vengeance.”

Esquire writer Charles Pierce said Trump’s action “Proves He’s Still the Petty Bag of Vengeful Rage He Was Raised to Be.”

The Daily Beast and NPR referred to it as a “purge,” a term usually reserved for Third World nations and third-rate movies. Politico depicted the action as a “Trump revenge campaign,” and then added that “The purge of impeachment witnesses has begun.”

The Washington Post ran an Ann Telnaes cartoon with Trump drawn as a mobster, complete with brass knuckles, under the headline: “Trump: It’s payback time.”

After all, what president who just survived impeachment and a three-year phony Russia collusion investigation isn’t eager to work with the people who tried to destroy him?

Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., addressed media complaints directly in a tweet. “Col. Vindman wasn’t ‘fired’ he’s still an Army officer. He was assigned to NSC to serve the President who has a right to have people he trusts on his staff. Sondland was a politically appointee. No point in having a political appointee who no longer has the Presidents confidence.”

The interesting backdrop of the media meltdown showed how great the week was for Trump. CNN Editor-at-large Chris Cillizza wrote about “8 very good things that happened to Donald Trump this week.” His list included the Iowa Democratic caucuses disaster and strong economic news.

CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP

Slate had a similar analysis, saying “Trump is tops this week” because “many signs point favorably in the direction of Trump’s reelection.”

That’s what the freak-out was all about – reelection. Trump lived up to his promise that “we will have so much winning if I get elected that you may get bored with winning.” I don’t think any of his supporters were bored. Giddy, more likely.

The cruise ship is docked off Yokohama Port, near Tokyo. It was quarantined on Monday when results came back positive for a guest who had gone ashore in Hong Kong on Jan. 25 and visited a local hospital.

“While on the ship, he did not visit the ship’s medical center to report any symptoms or illness,” Princess Cruises said in a statement Tuesday. “The hospital reports that he is in stable condition and the family members traveling with him remain symptom-free.”

The passenger, who is from Hong Kong, has claimed was unaware of his coronavirus diagnosis until six days after he disembarked in Hong Kong. The man has alleged that health authorities in Hong Kong initially failed to identify the virus through a thermal screening.

There were multiple American casualties after U.S. and Afghan troops were fired on during a mission in Afghanistan‘s eastern Nangarhar province on Saturday, two U.S. officials confirmed to Fox News.

Military personnel were fired upon while carrying out the operation, but the number of deaths and the severity of any injuries have yet to be confirmed, according to The Associated Press.

Military spokesman Col. Sonny Leggett issued in a statement, saying those involved in the attack were “engaged by direct firing.”

“We are assessing the situation,” he added. There were no other details provided as of Saturday afternoon.

Last year, 20 Americans were killed in action in Afghanistan.

In September, President Trump abruptly canceled talks with the Taliban including a visit to Camp David after an American soldier was killed in the country.

The attack Saturday comes after Trump made a surprise visit to Afghanistan on Thanksgiving to announce he has resumed negotiations with the Taliban.

The Trump administration is weighing a decision to remove up to 4,000 U.S. troops from Afghanistan.

Buttigieg Rising: How ex-mayor aims to go 2-for-2 in New Hampshire and upend the 2020 race

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Pete Buttigieg is definitely not lowering expectations in New Hampshire.

After claiming victory in Iowa and shocking the political world by essentially tying Democratic presidential nomination rival Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont in the caucuses even before the delayed results started trickling out, the former mayor of South Bend, Ind., says he’s aiming to go two-for-two in the state that holds the first primary in the White House race.

BUTTIGIEG ON THE RISE IN LATEST NEW HAMPSHIRE POLLS

And if he does, the youngest candidate in the Democratic field who, if elected, would become the nation’s first openly gay president,  would upend the nomination race and raise serious doubts about former Vice President Joe Biden’s ability to bounce back from two early setbacks.

While who actually won in Iowa is still in dispute — both Buttigieg and Sanders are claiming victory — an emboldened Buttigieg told Fox News’ Pete Doocy after Friday night’s Democratic presidential nomination debate that “we’re definitely in it to win it in New Hampshire.”

Buttigieg’s a close second to Sanders in two of the three latest polls of likely Democratic presidential primary voters in the Granite State: a University of New Hampshire survey for CNN that was released Saturday afternoon and an NBC News/Marist survey released Friday evening. And Buttigieg edged past Sanders on Friday night in a daily tracking poll by Suffolk University for the Boston Globe and WBZ-TV.

Senior Sanders adviser Jeff Weaver downplayed the Buttigieg rise in the polls, telling Fox News: “He keeps moving up because he overperformed in Iowa. We won there, but everybody thought we were going to win there, so you don’t get the same kind of bump. This is typical 48 hours after the thing, you get a bump. The question is can you sustain until the next election. That’s what we’ll see on Tuesday. I think not.”

The candidate — who at 38 is the youngest contender in the field of Democratic White House hopefuls — soared in the autumn but had seen his poll numbers — and his fundraising — slip a bit over the past two months.

But his strong finish in Iowa’s changed all that. Buttigieg’s campaign announced on Friday night that it raised $4 million in fundraising in the four days following the caucuses — with some of that cash haul coming from 30,000 donors new to the campaign.

And his team in New Hampshire — one of the more formidable 2020 organizations in the state — is working to make sure Buttigieg’s polling and fundraising momentum translates into the candidate’s supporters actually making it to polling stations on Tuesday.

The campaign has 75 staffers in New Hampshire — spread out among 15 offices across the state. And they’re touting their army of volunteers on this final weekend before the primary. The campaign told Fox News that on Saturday morning’s door knock shift, they sent out 25 percent more volunteers than on their previous best day in New Hampshire.

Separate from his ground game, Buttigieg’s getting a helping hand when it comes to the air wars.

The campaign is spending a modest $240,000 to run ads during the final week leading up to the primary, according to figures a few days ago from the ad-tracking firm Advertising Analytics.

But Buttigieg’s benefiting from the efforts of Vote Vets, a pro-Democratic outside group that’s spent over $1 million in the first-in-the-nation primary state of New Hampshire to run ads supporting the Afghanistan War veteran.

BUTTIGIEG TAKES INCOMING FIRE AT FRIDAY NIGHT’S DEBATE

Buttigieg went into Friday night’s prime-time debate as the candidate with the most momentum – and he faced plenty of incoming fire from his rivals on the stage.

Buttigieg came under attack for being too green for the White House, for being dismissive of Washington experience, and for being beholden to big money interests. But nothing happened during the marathon two and a half hour showdown to apparently soften his movement.

Still, one of the harshest lines of questioning did not come from a candidate, but from ABC debate moderator Linsey Davis, who challenged Buttigieg on his record in South Bend, especially over arrests for marijuana possession during his tenure as mayor.

Primary veteran Neil Levesque, the executive director of the New Hampshire Institute of Politics, highlighted that “we’ve seen all through the fall and into the winter here in New Hampshire, there’s something that he is saying and the way that he is saying it that’s very attractive to voters and so it might hold as we go into Tuesday and he’s certainly gaining some momentum.”

Lucas Meyer — president of the increasingly influential New Hampshire Young Democrats – explained that “there may be a peak in interest in him based off his performance in Iowa, but in part because he’s new to the state. I think there probably is a bit of an appeal in his freshness to the state.”

But he asked “whether that holds into the weekend and through primary day is anybody’s guess. A strong showing in Iowa definitely helps maintain that.”

His co-victory Iowa exceeded expectations. But now expectations are heightened because of his Iowa showing.

Top aids to another rival – former Vice President Joe Biden – told reporters on Friday that Buttigieg should have an advantage in New Hampshire because of the state’s overwhelmingly white electorate. Buttigieg’s struggles to resonate with African American and Latino voters has been well documented in the media.

With the White House race moving next to Nevada and South Carolina – which have much more diverse electorates – a strong finish in New Hampshire is paramount for Buttigieg.

Veteran New Hampshire Democratic consultant Sean Downey – who was a senior adviser on Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey’s presidential campaign, emphasized that “Mayor Pete’s situation here is urgent given his real lack of traction in the south and out west.”
