3 Islamic State-inspired militants sentenced for Christmas 2016 plot in Australia

Three men, who were inspired by the Islamic State group, were given lengthy sentences Friday for plotting a Christmas 2016 attack in Australia’s second largest city, a published report said.

The men, Ahmed Mohamed, Abdullah Chaarani and Hamza Abbas, were preparing a mass attack involving explosives and knives at Federation Square, a popular downtown restaurant and entertainment precinct in Melbourne, The Associated Press reported.

Justice Christopher Beale, seated at the Supreme Court of Victoria, said Chaarani, 29, and Mohamed, 27, must serve at least 28 years and six months in prison for their parts in the plot.

Meanwhile, Hamza Abbas, 24, who was involved in the conspiracy for a shorter period, was jailed for 22 years with a non-parole period of 16 years and six months, the AP reported.

“Each of you, to a greater or lesser degree, accessed materials on the internet supportive of Islamic State and violent jihad. Their views became so warped they had come to believe the mass slaughter of innocent civilians would be a glorious act, pleasing to Allah.”

— Justice Christopher Beale, Supreme Court of Victoria

“The stupidity of that belief was only matched by its malevolence,” he added.

CONAN, DOG INJURED IN AL BAGHDADI RAID, HONORED BY PRESIDENT TRUMP AT WHITE HOUSE

Self-confessed ringleader Ibrahim Abbas was sentenced last year to 24 years in prison. He served as a prosecution witness against his brother Hamza Abbas and co-conspirators Mohamed and Chaarani, the AP reported.

Last month, at a plea hearing before Beale, Mohamed and Chaarani claimed they had renounced Islamic State and had worked toward deradicalization since being arrested on Dec. 22, 2016, the report said.

At Friday’s sentencing, Beale accepted the three men were on the path to rehabilitation.

This is the second terrorism conviction for Mohamed and Chaarani, who are already serving 22-year prison terms for firebombing a Shiite mosque in Melbourne just weeks before the planned Christmas attack.

Beijing threats over bill supporting Hong Kong ’laughable,’ China expert says

Gordon Chang, the author of “The Coming Collapse of China,” said Thursday that Beijing’s threats of taking “countermeasures” over the U.S. law backing the protests in Hong Kong are “laughable” and is in no position to “anger its best customer” as its economy slumps.

Beijing was quick to admonish President Trump and Congress for passing two bills aimed at supporting human rights in Hong Kong.  The Chinese foreign ministry said in a statement that the bills will only “strengthen the resolve of the Chinese people, including the Hong Kong people, and raise the sinister intentions and hegemonic nature of the U.S,” and promised  vague “countermeasures.”

Chang said in an email that anything Beijing can do “will hurt itself more than us, and given how close its economy is to the edge of the cliff the regime could end up doing itself in by retaliating.”

He continued, “For four decades, we were told by elites and policymakers that we could not afford to upset China. Wednesday, President Trump did what his predecessors would not do—defend America from a China that is going after us. The same power that is encroaching on Hong Kong’s autonomy is attacking our society across the board.”

Hong Kong, a former British colony that was granted semi-autonomy when China took control in 1997, has been rocked by six months of sometimes violent pro-democracy demonstrations after an extradition bill surfaced last summer that– if passed– would have sent alleged criminals in Hong Kong to China for trial.

The Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act, which was sponsored by Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., requires that the U.S. conducts yearly reviews into Hong Kong’s autonomy from Beijing. If ever found unsatisfactory, the city’s special status for U.S. trading could be tossed.

Up until Wednesday’s announcement, Trump did not indicate whether or not he would sign the bill. Secretary of  State Mike Pompeo refused to answer a reporter’s question about the president’s leanings as recent as Tuesday.

“I signed these bills out of respect for President Xi, China, and the people of Hong Kong,” Trump said in a statement. “They are being enacted in the hope that Leaders and Representatives of China and Hong Kong will be able to amicably settle their differences leading to long term peace and prosperity for all.”

The bills were applauded by protesters who see them as a warning to Beijing and Hong Kong.

Italy police uncover plot to form new Nazi party, authorities say

Italian police said Thursday that they had seized weapons and far-right propaganda material from the homes of 19 suspected extremists who were hoping to form a Nazi party in the country.

The Polizia di Stato said that searches had taken place in 16 cities and towns, including Milan, Genoa, Livorno, Turin, Padua and Verona.

It was not immediately clear how many people, if any, were arrested and police gave no estimate of how many people were members of the self-styled Italian National Socialist Workers Party.

Authorities said the raids, dubbed “Operation Black Shadows,” stemmed from “the monitoring of extreme right-wing local groups all united by the same ideological fanaticism and intending to constitute a pro-Nazi, xenophobic and anti-Semitic movement.” They added that some suspects “had a vast amount of weapons and explosives at their disposal” while others tried to recruit new members by posting anti-Semitic and Holocaust-denying material on social media.

The Italian news agency ANSA identified a senior member of the group as a 50-year-old woman from Padua who police say called herself “Hitler’s Sergeant Major” in private group chats. Another reported suspect is a 26-year-old woman from Sicily who won an online “Miss Hitler” beauty contest and spoke at a far-right conference in Lisbon this past August.

Police identified one suspect as a former convict believed to be a senior figure in the ‘Ndrangheta mafia and a former member of the Forza Nuova (New Force) far-right party.

Authorities said the group had made contact with far-right parties in Portugal, Britain and France.

It is illegal under Italian law to try to revive fascist parties or practice “defense of fascism.”

A survey published last week by the Anti-Defamation League found that 18 percent of Italians held anti-Semitic attitudes, down from 29 percent in 2015. However, activists say anti-Semitic attacks in Italy are on the rise, especially online.

The Milan-based Center of Contemporary Jewish Documents’ Observatory on Anti-Jewish Prejudice said it had received reports of 190 anti-Semitic incidents through the first nine months of this year, 120 of them on social media. That compares with 153 anti-Semitic incidents for all of 2018 and 91 for all of 2017.

Earlier this month, 89-year-old senator-for-life Liliana Segre, a Holocaust survivor, was given police protection after revealing that she received 200 social media attacks each day. Segre had called for the creation of a parliamentary committee to combat hate, racism and anti-Semitism. Parliament approved her motion — but without votes from Italy’s three main right-wing parties.

James Carafano: Trump’s Afghanistan trip shows he’s no isolationist – Illustrates a Trump Doctrine

Westlake Legal Group 694940094001_6110178617001_6110180783001-vs James Carafano: Trump’s Afghanistan trip shows he’s no isolationist – Illustrates a Trump Doctrine James Jay Carafano fox-news/world/conflicts/afghanistan fox-news/world fox-news/person/donald-trump fox-news/opinion fox news fnc/opinion fnc article 1a61d73f-c713-5c5b-baac-be3f44bdc725

It was not a happy Thanksgiving for President Trump’s detractors, as the president showed with his surprise trip to Afghanistan Thursday that “America First” is not a code term for isolationism.

Trump’s visit with U.S. troops, his meeting with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani, and his announcement that the U.S. has reopened peace talks with the Taliban showed that the U.S. is in anything but retreat.

By now, it should be clear to everyone that accusations claiming Trump is really an isolationist are bogus.

TRUMP SAYS PEACE TALKS WITH TALIBAN HAVE RESUMED DURING SURPRISE VISIT TO AFGHANISTAN

Most recently, when Trump announced a shift in Syria policy, he was accused of “abandoning the Middle East.” Over time, the facts on the ground didn’t bear out that out.

More from Opinion

Now we know that the U.S. brokered a cease-fire between Syrian and Kurdish forces that undoubtedly helped avoid needless bloodshed. America continues to fight ISIS and work with the Kurds, and no adversary has realized any real gains from the shift in the U.S. footprint.

Still think the isolationist label sticks to Trump? How does that square with his action this week signing legislation supporting the people of Hong Kong in their struggle with China? Now the U.S. is on record to support the effort of Hong Kongers to retain the political and economic freedoms that Beijing promised to honor when Britain returned Hong Kong to Chinese control.

Trump faced tremendous pressure from Beijing to veto that legislation. He didn’t. That doesn’t jibe with the notion that the president wants to turn his back on the free world.

Trump’s trip to Afghanistan was yet another reminder that he is willing to go to the ends of the Earth to protect America’s interests. Keeping the Taliban from overrunning Afghanistan is key to peace and stability in South Asia, and to blocking a resurgence of the likes of Al Qaeda.

Trump differs from his predecessors in that he seeks neither to solve all the world’s problems nor to ignore legitimate threats to U.S. interests. What he is trying to do is establish a credible and sustainable global footprint that makes clear to America’s adversaries that the U.S. is no pushover and it doesn’t intend to become one.

To that end, Trump has pushed friends and allies to bear their fair share of the peace-and-stability load. He has pushed U.S. forces forward not to fight endless wars or act as the world’s policeman, but to safeguard our interests and partner with those who share our vision for a peaceful, prosperous global space.

Afghanistan is a case in point for what can be called the Trump Doctrine. Trump shifted the mission of U.S. forces there from fighting a war to providing advice and support for the Afghan people. He made a commitment to stick it out. And he offered the Taliban an off-ramp from the conflict.

If the Taliban are willing to talk peace with the Afghan government, then the U.S. is willing to talk, too – but all the while, America will continue to provide military support for the Afghan government and conduct counterterrorism operations.

Trump has made similar offers to all of America’s competitors: Iran, Russia, China and North Korea.

The president’s trip to Afghanistan demonstrates his continued resolve to follow through. No doubt, Trump was also pleased to spend time with the troops he loves – and to let them know how thankful he and the entire country are for their service and sacrifice.

The Trump Doctrine – and any responsible foreign policy – cannot succeed without our courageous men and women in uniform. The president clearly appreciates their patriotism and all they do for our country.

Polish ex-president defends Bidens, Burisma

A former Polish president who is on the board of the Ukrainian gas company Burisma said Thursday that the world of business works through nepotism, and that the son of former Vice President Joe Biden was indeed chosen to join its advisory board because of his family name, according to a report.

But the onetime Polish leader, Aleksander Kwasniewski Kwasniewski, insisted in an interview with The Associated Press that Hunter Biden was an active board member who helped the company, and that he never used his relationship with his father to further the company’s interests.

“I understand that if someone asks me to be part of some project it’s not only because I’m so good, it’s also because I am Kwasniewski and I am a former president of Poland,” he said. “And this is all interconnected. No-names are a nobody.

“Being Biden is not bad. It’s a good name.”

Kwasniewski said Burisma members never tried to use Hunter Biden to curry favor with the administration of Barack Obama when Joe Biden was Obama’s vice president.

TRUMP IMPEACHMENT INQUIRY A ‘THREAT TO THE PRESIDENCY,’ GRAHAM SAYS

“He was a normal member of this group,” he said. “We didn’t ask him — and he never said anything — about his father.”

Only at dinners was Biden sometimes asked how his father was doing and on one occasion Biden spoke about the death of his brother, Beau, Kwasniewski said.

He said Hunter Biden carried out research and brought a unique American perspective to the company, including in the areas of corporate governance, capital markets and gas drilling equipment, where Americans are world leaders.

“He collected information,” Kwasniewski said. “He was useful for us because he knew something that we didn’t know.”

Biden’s time on the board lasted from 2014 to 2019.

House Democrats opened an impeachment inquiry  surrounding President Trump‘s July 25 phone call with Ukraine. Democrats argue that the president pressured the Eastern European nation to investigate the Bidens’ business dealings in Ukraine, and thus potentially interfere in the 2020 election. (Joe Biden has for months been viewed as the Democratic frontrunner in the 2020 race for the White House.)

At the time of the call and the call for a Biden inquiry, the administration was withholding nearly $400 million in military aid Ukraine needed to counter Russian-backed forces — critics say the aid was being held back to prod Kiev into mounting that Biden probe.

Hunter Biden was tapped for Burisma as part of a strategy to clean up its reputation.

Kwasniewski had a short phone call with him in which he told him Burisma was determined to be well-managed and transparent.

Kwasniewski also recalled telling him that if Burisma succeeded in tapping into Ukraine’s gas deposits, it would help Ukraine gain energy independence from Russia, which is key to its broader struggle to exist as a sovereign nation.

He said Burisma now produces about 25 percent to 30 percent of the gas on the Ukrainian market and Ukraine — where Russia in past winters has turned off the gas flow as a form of political pressure — is in fact becoming “less and less dependent on Russia.”

Jeffrey Epstein accuser Virginia Roberts on Prince Andrew: ‘He knows what happened’

Virginia Roberts, who claims she was trafficked by convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein and forced to have sex with Prince Andrew on three occasions nearly 20 years ago, has responded to the prince’s denial of her allegations against him by saying: “He knows what happened, I know what happened, and there’s only one of us telling the truth.”

Roberts, now known as Virginia Giuffre, made the comment in a BBC interview that is scheduled to air on Monday. The broadcaster tweeted out a 20-second preview of the interview on Thursday.

The BBC aired an interview with Prince Andrew Nov. 14, in which the second son of Elizabeth II discussed his friendship with Epstein and the sexual assault allegations against him. The royal, 59, claimed he had “no recollection of ever meeting” Roberts, “none whatsoever.” The Duke of York also implied that a now-famous photograph showing him with his hand around Roberts’ waist was doctored.

“I have absolutely no memory of that photograph,” the prince insisted. “I’m afraid to say that I don’t believe that photograph was taken in the way that has been suggested.”

The interview has been widely considered a public relations disaster for Andrew, who announced shortly after it aired that he would be stepping down from his royal duties.

Also Thursday, London’s Metropolitan Police disclosed that it had received a complaint in July 2015 accusing Epstein “and a British woman” — presumably that’s a reference to Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein’s longtime companion — of “nonrecent trafficking for sexual exploitation.”

Roberts has claimed Epstein paid her to have sex with Prince Andrew on three occasions starting in 2001, including once in London. She says she was 17 when they first had sex.

PRINCE ANDREW’S JEFFREY EPSTEIN INTERVIEW SLAMMED AS DISASTER BY VIEWERS, MEDIA

Metropolitan Police Cmdr. Alex Murray said the department interviewed Roberts — who was not named in the statement — and consulted with prosecutors before concluding in November 2016 that it “was not the appropriate authority to conduct inquiries in these circumstances”.

“Following the legal advice, it was clear that any investigation into human trafficking would be largely focused on activities and relationships outside the U.K.,” said Murray, who added that the Metropolitan Police revisited its decision after Epstein’s death this past August and “our position remains unchanged.”

Epstein died Aug. 10 after being found unconscious in a Manhattan jail cell, where he was awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges. His death has been ruled a suicide.

Murray also said that London police have not received a formal request for assistance from other law enforcement agencies investigating the case.

U.S. officials are still looking into the case, and a number of civil lawsuits against Epstein’s estate are in progress.

Even ‘Fox & Friends’ Hosts Are Confused By Trump’s War On A War On ‘Thanksgiving’

Westlake Legal Group Kxo5XWPtr--wU6GbgVV5FUdUJXgTccmv5iLWdsm28qU Even 'Fox & Friends' Hosts Are Confused By Trump's War On A War On 'Thanksgiving' r/politics

This could actually play out really, really interestingly.

Fox&Freunde viewers have historically been far more pro-Trump than pro-F&F, as is arguably true for the rest of the network. Remember that Fox’s transition into state media was led far more by the viewers than the network itself – through most of the primaries Fox was actually pretty openly anti-Trump; only embracing him when their viewers started to revolt.

Additionally, Trumpeteers are preternaturally good at scouring the Internet for shit exactly like this screenshot, so it’s guaranteed to come up. Side note – I know it’s taboo to praise Trump supporters here but I wish the left would recognize how effective they’ve been at converting Internet participation into meaningful political actions. Those actions might be evil as fuck, but the underlying principle of “work together to divide up large, labor intensive projects in order to work towards realistic incremental goals” is a demonstrably effective approach towards achieving political change.

The thing is, Fox has to know this screenshot exists. Like they didn’t all forget their fearmongering but in a way so thoroughly that they felt confident potentially pissing off Trump without even looking into it; that would be insane. They also almost certainly know that Trump has a history of viciously attacking Fox for anything less than perfect absolute loyalty, and that he’s absolutely petty enough to go to war over simple shit like this. I mean fuck, this is at least as significant as “was that Hurricane going to hit Alabama” and that lasted for like a week, only culminating after escalating to a genuine threat to public security as NWS of all fucking orgs got politicized.

They’re throwing Molotov cocktails here. Right or wrong, this could start a war. Plus, this is literally Fox – it’s not like playing along and claiming that yes there absolutely is a war on Thanksgiving and liberals are trying to rename it because they hate America would be beneath their integrity here.

Donning my tinfoil hat: what does Fox & Friends know that I don’t which makes this make sense? Is retaliation genuinely unlikely for some reason, perhaps due to health issues? Are their viewers beginning to realize how overwhelming the evidence against Trump is, to the extent that betrayal is a good idea?
