Customs and Border Protection officer accused of killing wife on Thanksgiving

A Customs and Border Protection officer was arrested in the murder of his wife, also a CBP employee, who was killed in their Texas home on Thanksgiving, police said.

Dudley Bernard, 40, was taken into custody in the front yard of his League City property Thursday night after his wife, 42-year-old Chauntelle Bernard was found dead, according to the local police department.

US BORDER AGENT ARRESTED IN CONNECTION WITH SEVERAL SEXUAL ASSAULTS DURING 7-YEAR SPAN

Investigators responded to the house after receiving several 911 calls about “multiple gunshots” fired just after 11 p.m., and found the woman “deceased at the front door of the residence with injuries consistent with gunshot wounds,” officials wrote on Facebook Friday morning. Bernard was arrested without incident.

During the time of the shooting, the couple’s two sons, along with other family members, were inside the house, KHOU reported. Police said there was a “disturbance” inside and Bernard walked out of the family’s back door before returning with a handgun. His wife was shot moments later.

BORDER PATROL AGENT ARRESTED, ACCUSED OF KILLING 4 WOMEN AND KIDNAPPING A 5TH

Both Bernard and his wife, per the news outlet, worked for CBP. The agency did not immediately return Fox News’ request for comment, but confirmed the couple’s employment in a statement.

“U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agriculture Specialist Dudley Bernard was arrested by the League City Police Department on Nov. 28 while he was off duty,” Dennis Smith, a CBP public affairs specialist, said. “Since August 2008, he has worked CBP agriculture operations in the Houston Seaport environment. CBP is fully cooperating with the League City Police Department who is leading this investigation.”

“CBP Officer Chauntelle Bernard joined CBP in 2008 and she worked her way up the supervisory chain to become a supervisory CBP officer,” Smith continued. “Houston was her only duty station. No words can express the sense of loss SCBPO Bernard’s death brings to her colleagues and friends in CBP. Please direct any further inquiries to the League City Police Department.”

Bernard was charged with murder and as of Sunday was being held at the Galveston County jail on a $200,000 bond.

As Taiwan’s Election Race Heats Up, China Weighs On Voters’ Minds

At a recent election campaign event in Taiwan, a procession of women beat ceremonial drums, dance and wave lotus-shaped umbrellas in celebration. But beyond the slogans promising national security and prosperity, the topic on everyone’s mind is what to do about China.

The star of the event is Han Kuo-yu, a pro-Beijing candidate running for president with the opposition Kuomintang, who poses a stark contrast with the current leaders.

“[The governing party] relentlessly uses Taiwan independence as a way to negate China,” Han, the mayor of the city of Kaohsiung, said to rallygoers at the event in Miaoli county, just south of Taiwan’s capital of Taipei. “However, Taiwan and Beijing are one family.”

Taiwan, a U.S. ally, has its own government, military and capitalist economy, but the Chinese Communist Party says Taiwan belongs to the People’s Republic of China.

Voters are preparing to elect Taiwan’s next president and legislature on Jan. 11. While the leading opposition candidate sympathizes with Beijing, President Tsai Ing-wen’s Democratic Progressive Party calls China the “enemy of democracy.”

Many Taiwanese are also closely watching what is happening in Hong Kong, where more than five months of sometimes violent protests are pushing back against mainland China’s control. Taiwan largely wants to avoid becoming another Hong Kong, which could tip the election in favor of President Tsai, who is running for reelection and enjoys a widening lead in opinion polls.

“We see the freedom enjoyed by the Hong Kong people is being chipped away,” Joseph Wu, Taiwan’s foreign minister, told NPR. “We see the experience of Hong Kong is not quite what the Chinese government promised in the early days.”

“One country” rejected

Still, China’s leader Xi Jinping has been pressuring Taiwan to follow Hong Kong’s model.

It’s called “one country, two systems,” meaning Hong Kong is part of China but keeps some autonomy, including government functions and independent courts — in theory.

Many Hong Kongers accuse the leadership in Hong Kong and Beijing of eroding their limited autonomy. That sentiment is in part why thousands have taken to the street in anti-government protests that are now in their sixth month.

Taiwan’s leaders flatly reject any proposal for Taiwan to enter a similar arrangement with China.

“Hong Kong is on the verge of chaos due to the failure of ‘one country, two systems,'” President Tsai said on Taiwan’s national day in October. “The overwhelming consensus among Taiwan’s 23 million people is our rejection of ‘one country, two systems,’ regardless of party affiliation or political position.”

More than 86% say they would prefer to maintain Taiwan’s current status, according to the latest polls.

Even the opposition candidate Han, who has sparked controversy over his pro-Beijing stance, disavowed the Hong Kong policy after the protests erupted. “Taiwanese people can never accept [‘one country, two systems’], unless it’s over my dead body,” he said.

Taiwan has been preparing for China to attack ever since Nationalist leader Chiang Kai-shek retreated to the island in 1949, along with 2 million of his supporters and soldiers, after losing a civil war against Mao Zedong’s Communist forces.

Xi has said Taiwan should unify with mainland China peacefully but has threatened to use force to do so.

As Beijing steps up militaristic rhetoric, the U.S. has stepped up its support f0r the island. It has bulked up its de facto embassy in Taipei and passed legislation encouraging official travel between the U.S. and Taiwan. This year, the U.S. made a high-profile $8 billion sale of fighter jets and other military equipment to the island, angering Beijing.

Taiwan considers itself a bulwark of democracy in the Asia-Pacific region, where China is increasingly asserting its power.

“We are on the front lines. We have faced all these threats and Chinese infiltration for decades,” says Freddy Lim, a death metal rocker turned co-founder of one of Taiwan’s most liberal political organizations, the New Power Party.

The nearly 5-year-old party is now going through an existential crisis over whether to support Tsai’s reelection bid. In August, Lim quit the party to run for reelection to his legislative seat as an independent so he could back President Tsai, arguing the stakes of losing the presidency to a pro-Beijing candidate are too high.

Better collaboration with China

Central to every election in Taiwan is the question: Does Taiwan, a small island, sidle up to its much bigger neighbor China to develop its economy or keep it at an arm’s length?

“There is no such thing as economic and trade without politics in Taiwan,” says Lev Nachman, a doctoral candidate researching Taiwanese political movements.

Some politicians have tried to stake out some middle ground, such as the upstart Taiwan People’s Party that formed in August. It has come under criticism for seemingly waffling on its stance toward Beijing.

“We try to enhance the collaboration with the people with the civil society of mainland China, especially in terms of economics and culture. We very much support the kind of nongovernmental interaction,” explains Kimyung Keng, one of the Taiwan People’s Party candidates running for a district legislative seat.

Unify one way or another

Despite its small size and dwindling number of international allies, Taiwan has managed to nurture a robust economy. Homegrown corporate champions include electronics-making giant Foxconn and the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Wages are rising and the unemployment rate is just under 3.8%, one of the lowest levels in two decades. President Tsai has built up economic ties with Southeast Asia to diversify Taiwan’s trade portfolio away from mainland China.

But supporters of opposition candidate Han say the president has made a mistake in shutting out Beijing. Taiwan should not be afraid of unification with China, rallygoers at the recent campaign event told NPR.

The staunchest of the pro-China camp is prominent gangster turned politician. Chang An-lo once helped lead one of Taiwan’s biggest gangs, the Bamboo Union. Now, he heads the Chinese Unification Promotion Party, which nominates no candidates of its own but backs every pro-Beijing Kuomintang candidate.

“When China unifies Taiwan either violently or peacefully, do you want military rule or one country, two systems? The latter is still the best way for Taiwan,” says Chang. “How could an economy of 1.4 billion people be bad for Taiwan? And what’s wrong with returning to China, as we are all Chinese?”

Taiwanese mostly disagree. The latest polls on identity show the island’s residents feel increasingly Taiwanese, not Chinese.

“There is a huge generational difference,” says Luo Chi-cheng, a Democratic Progressive lawmaker running for reelection. “Young people pay close attention to what happens in Hong Kong because [otherwise] in the future, Taiwan may be forced to accept the so-called one country, two system model.”

Older voters tend to care more about economic development, according to Luo. It is the younger Taiwanese, he notes, who have longer to live and more opportunities to decide future election outcomes.

The Corporate Media’s War Against Bernie Sanders Is Very Real

Westlake Legal Group -vm6mFb5Xk5KbAo61bNS2gCdrGsFccsJdLXMgn53Hjk The Corporate Media’s War Against Bernie Sanders Is Very Real r/politics

Bernie is the only 2020 candidate who cautioned us about the war in Iraq, and he was absolutely right.

He also talked about the dangers of climate change more than 30 years ago, and he was absolutely right again.

In fact, his message has been incredibly consistent for decades.

He has demonstrated that he will do the right thing and fight for people, whether it’s easy or hard. From protesting segregation to fighting for LGBT rights, he was on the right side even when people warned him that it could end his political career. He has shown that he genuinely cares about people and he has shown that he will stand on his principles. There’s no other candidate who has a record like him and there’s no other candidate who deserves our trust as much as he does. Bernie has been fighting for us every day of his life since before most of us were born.

The fact that he’s such a good candidate makes it even more upsetting that the media constantly makes baseless attacks on his character, or omits him from coverage altogether. Someone put the data together recently and the news mentions Biden four times as much as Bernie despite similar polling numbers. They also mention Warren more than twice as much and they even mention Buttigieg more often despite the fact that he’s polling in single digits. Mainstream media is giving him such bad coverage that Fox News viewers are more likely to support Bernie than MSNBC viewers are. Yup, they’re trying to rig this election just like the last one. So of course they’ll do their best to downplay the fact that Bernie has the most supporters by far and he also has overwhelming support amongst young voters. And they’re definitely not going to tell you that a recent Emerson poll found that Bernie is the only candidate beating Trump in a nationwide head-to-head.

The other candidates just don’t stack up.

If anyone wants to learn more about Bernie I would recommend watching a speech or an interview, and I’d definitely suggest that you read his campaign plans. I’d also recommend checking out the Bernie subreddits, r/SandersForPresident, r/WayOfTheBern and r/OurPresident, as well as r/MobilizedMinds.

The media won’t give Bernie fair coverage, so we have to. Support Bernie in any way you can, and get the word out as much as possible. Let people know that the media is covering him up, and tell them who he really is. Get people registered to vote and remind them to vote in the primaries. If we all work together we can do this!

Paul Batura: Change the course of your child’s life by doing THIS

In every generation, children’s needs have been a hot topic of debate.

Over the years, you won’t find much disagreement regarding the practical essentials for a child’s health and well-being — things like adequate shelter, comfortable clothing, sufficient food and quality health care. But while everyone may agree on the need for all four of those items, not everyone sees eye to eye on how much of those things are enough – or when enough becomes too much.

“Luxuries have become necessities for today’s children,” my mother used to lament.

CAROL ROTH: STOP SCARING OUR KIDS — THE WORLD IS NOT ABOUT TO END AND WE ARE NOT ALL ABOUT TO DIE

The older I get, the more I appreciate her point of view.

Eras reflect the tensions of the day, of course, especially when it comes to children’s needs. Back in 1917, beset by a tuberculosis outbreak, the health commissioner of New York City implored parents to start feeding their kids a healthier diet. They were also urged to stop serving them drinks like “tea, coffee, soda water, beer, wine, whisky and cider.”

Beer, whisky and wine for kids? It’s no wonder prohibition passed in 1919.

By the 1940s, the Child Welfare League of America expanded beyond food nutrition concerns, stating that “Every child needs to feel secure in his home, school and neighborhood relationships. He needs to feel he is wanted, loved and understood.”

If that was important then, what do today’s children need now?

I’ve been thinking a lot about what else our boys need beyond the physical essentials.

Every child needs many things – and the most important things are the ones you can’t normally see or hold in your hand. As a parent, I’m regularly trying to pass on intangibles like faith in God, along with attributes like honesty, integrity, character, kindness and self-control, to name just a few of the “secrets” to a rewarding and meaningful life .

The late Father Theodore Hesburgh, the longtime president of Notre Dame, once famously said, “The most important thing a father can do for his children is to love their mother.”

I think the Irish prelate was right, but there’s another thing our children need:

Our kids need to see us doing what we love.

It doesn’t necessarily have to be work-related, though aligning our gifts with our profession plays a huge role in life satisfaction. Sadly, surveys show that over 70 percent of people don’t enjoy their job.

When our children catch us firing on all cylinders, whether it’s in the midst of a hobby or a job, we’re demonstrating the fact that life can be enjoyable, exciting and full of meaning and purpose. In reaching for our own dreams we quietly encourage them to reach for theirs.

“People rarely succeed unless they have fun in what they are doing,” wrote the late self-help guru Dale Carnegie. I think he was right.

My mother was a fiercely curious person. She loved clipping obituaries and listening to talk radio. She knew everything about everyone in our neighborhood, especially those who walked past our house on the way to the train.

My mom also loved to read. I’d find her on our side porch, pouring over stacks of newspapers and magazines. She was probably never happier than when she had a good book or the Wall Street Journal in her hand.

I realize now that I fell in love with writing because I first saw how much my mother loved to read. She always tried to find threads that a pointed to higher truth in what she was reading, something that I try to do when I write today.

It’s been said values and loves are more often caught than taught. This is certainly the case with the unique relational dynamic that exists between parents and kids.

Whether it’s passion about the job at the office or the joy we receive from sailing the high seas, it’s the wise parent who makes sure their child knows what turns their crank.

That’s because enthusiasm plants seeds of excitement in others – and what we sow today will often be harvested tomorrow by the next generation.

7 Windows 10 fixes you’ll wish you knew sooner

Nearly a billion computers around the world run Windows 10. Critics have praised it. Some users love it while others hate it. Some experts estimate that Windows 10 dominates nearly 40 percent of the desktop OS market, handily surpassing the popularity of Windows 7.

Speaking of, are you still using Windows 7? Microsoft is ending support for the 10-year-old operating system in January. Tap or click to learn how to bring your PC up to date before it’s too late.

Using the slogan “upgrade your world,” Microsoft has described Windows 10 as the “final” version. Instead of replacing the operating system every few years, Windows 10 users have been able to download free updates. With the return of the Start menu and advent of Microsoft Edge, Windows 10 is arguably the best version ever produced.

But Windows 10 isn’t perfect. The last several updates introduced pretty serious bugs and flaws that broke essential features and left users with the dreaded “Blue Screen of Death.” Tap or click to get the scoop on one of the worst Windows updates and make sure you have the fix.

The operating system also has some quirks that may have sounded great at company meetings, but the vast majority of folks find these choices odd, annoying, and inconvenient. Luckily, you can change many settings to suit your taste.

How can you make your Windows 10 experience even better? Here are a few suggestions.

1. Take control of updates and reboots

Windows is good at installing updates. This process is straightforward and automatic. The bad news is, you usually have to reboot your computer, and you have no idea when a new update will suddenly start downloading.

Be careful. Did you get an email reminding you to update Windows? It’s a scam! Tap or click to learn how cybercriminals are tricking users into a dangerous ransomware trap.

To prevent these unscheduled interruptions, go to your settings menu, and set time parameters. This way, your computer will stop itself from updating during “active hours.”

You can also pause updates altogether, halting them for up to 35 days.

This might impact your security, so you don’t want to go too long. But if you want a short reprieve, go to your Settings menu, choose the Windows Updates field and find Advanced Options. From there, you can toggle the Pause Updates option and switch it to On.

2. Limit Cortana’s interactions

Like other virtual assistants, Cortana is always listening for the wake command. Unfortunately, a flaw in the programming may allow hackers to break into a Windows 10 computer using Cortana’s voice commands, even while it’s locked. Anyone can issue voice commands to Cortana and force it into downloading malicious malware.

You can stop Cortana from putting your data at risk by removing Cortana from your lock screen and teach it to respond only to your voice alone.

  • Go to the Talk to Cortana option found in your Settings menu.
  • Under Hey Cortana, turn the Let Cortana Respond to Hey Cortana Switch to On.
  • Next, click the link labeled Learn How I Say Hey Cortana. This will allow you to go through the voice recognition training.
  • From here, click on the Cortana start button and repeat the six provided phrases. This will get Cortana familiar with your voice.
  • After the training is complete, you can go back to Cortana in the Settings menu and enable the Try to Respond Only to Me option.

3. Change search from Bing to Google (or your preferred search engine)

Bing is set as the default search engine for Microsoft Edge, but that may not sit well with you. Tap or click here for search engines that don’t track you.

So, here’s how you can change things up a bit.

  • Start by searching Google.com.
  • Click on the three dots at the top right corner to go to Settings.
  • Scroll to the bottom and choose View Advanced Settings.
  • Go down the list until you find the search in the address bar option. Click it and select Add New.
  • Click on Google and chose Add as Default. Done.

4. Use a PIN as your login

You can lock your computer with a long, convoluted password, or you can reset it to a simple PIN. Your PIN is only four digits long and doesn’t require any complicated parameters such as special characters or mixed case letters. It’s less secure, of course, but a PIN makes unlocking easier.

Setting up your PIN is pretty simple. Go to Settings > Accounts > Sign In Options. From there, click the Add button under PIN. Enter in any PIN of your choice and restart to give it a try.

TECH HOW-TO: Windows time-saving keyboard shortcuts you need to know.

5. Resize your Start menu like a pro

The start menu acts as the central hub for everything you do on Windows 10. Because of that, its default appearance can seem a little bland. Users have often complained about the size of the start menu, never realizing that this can also be customized.

To fix it, do the Windows drag. Click on the Start menu and move your cursor to the top edge of the icon until it shows as a two-sided arrow. Click, hold, and drag to resize the menu to your preferred size and let go.

You can easily resize your desktop icons, too. Tap or click here for a step-by-step guide.

6. Play DVDs the easy and free way

By now, you’ve probably noticed that Windows 10 won’t play DVDs, and Windows Media Player has been removed. While Microsoft offers an official DVD playback option, this feature costs $15 and seems to have persistent problems.

Fortunately, there’s a better option available that can have you watching DVDs quickly and free of charge: VLC video player. Tap or click here to download it.

Be sure to download the desktop app instead of the Windows Store version, which won’t support DVDs or Blu-Ray discs.

7. Silence all the annoying announcements

Depending on your settings, Windows may start announcing everything you touch with an actual voice. Windows will also record and recite any text that you type into the Cortana Search Box, which may feel excessive.

You may have inadvertently turned on the Narrator feature, which is used by visually impaired users to better navigate the system without having to type.

To turn the Narrator off, you can either repeat the keyboard combination, CTRL + Windows Key + Enter or go to the Narrator settings app and tap Exit. To keep the Narrator from accidentally coming on again, go back to the Settings > General and uncheck the Enable shortcut to launch Narrator box. Problem solved.

Matt Gaetz backs Trump pick for Georgia Senate seat, warns governor to do same: ‘Maybe you need a primary in 2022’

U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz suggested to Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp on Friday that there could be political consequences if Kemp decides not to choose President Trump’s reported favorite for the state’s expected U.S. Senate vacancy.

In a series of Twitter messages on the day after Thanksgiving, Gaetz, a Florida Republican, called on Kemp to choose U.S. Rep. Doug Collins for the seat, when Sen. Johnny Isakson steps down at the end of the year.

Collins, 53, is a Republican who has represented Georgia in Congress since January 2013 and is the ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee, which is scheduled to hold impeachment hearings this week. Like Gaetz, who also serves on the Judiciary Committee, Collins is considered a staunch defender of President Trump.

Kemp, a Republican, has been leaning instead toward appointing financial executive Kelly Loeffler to the Senate, according to the Washington Times.

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp, left, has been feeling some pressure from U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., right, over Georgia’s upcoming U.S. Senate vacancy.

“You are ignoring his request because you THINK you know better than @POTUS,” Gaetz wrote in one Twitter message. “If you substitute your judgement [sic] for the President’s, maybe you need a primary in 2022. Let’s see if you can win one w/o Trump.”

“You are hurting President Trump,” Gaetz wrote in another tweet. “You know this because he told you.”

Kemp had fired off a Twitter message of his own.

“The idea that I would appoint someone to the U.S. Senate that is NOT pro-life, pro-2nd Amendment, pro-freedom, and 100% supportive of our President (and his plan to Keep America Great) is ridiculous,” Kemp wrote. “The attacks and games are absolutely absurd. Frankly, I could care less what the political establishment thinks.”

Kemp had previously faced backlash from pro-life advocates over Loeffler’s reported ties to organizations favoring abortion.

The Senate vacancy arose in August when Isakson, the 74-year-old chairman of the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee, announced plans to retire amid his battle with Parkinson’s disease.

“I am leaving a job I love because my health challenges are taking their toll on me, my family and my staff,” Isakson said at the time.

Meanwhile, Kemp and Loeffler met with Trump at the White House last Sunday – with the meeting quickly becoming tense and ending abruptly, The Wall Street Journal reported last week.

Sources told the Journal that Kemp said he remained open to the president’s preference for the Senate seat as well, and Kemp and Trump reportedly spoke by phone on Monday, although the outcome of their discussion was unknown, the report said.

A good night’s sleep is just a Cyber Monday purchase away.

After a filling Thanksgiving feast with your family and friends, you might be beginning to take inventory of what you’re intending to spend or even splurge on for the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it holiday season. Plus, you also have to think about what you’re going to get as gifts for everyone — from your partner’s parents to the little ones in your life.

But you can’t forget about treating yourself. ’Tis the season after all.

While you might be focused on getting deals on a smartwatch or shoes, you might be neglecting to give yourself the gift of a good night’s sleep. And you’ll need that to get through the final few weeks of the year. And still have energy when the new year rolls around.

If your mattress is old and has some sagging spots, it’s probably time to upgrade. You can’t get some rest and relaxation like that.

Usually, mattresses can be pricey so that may have put you off on purchasing the right one. It never hurts to find a deal on one that your Google searches have led you to and that’s well-reviewed, whether it’s an Allswell mattress or Parachute mattress.

Fortunately, we found the best mattress deals that are happening right now for Cyber Monday 2019. These deals are so good that the Sandman won’t have to pay you a visit, either.
