Missouri suspect walks into police headquarters covered in blood: ‘I just committed 2 murders’

A suspect in two Missouri Thanksgiving Day homicides was arrested after he walked into a police headquarters covered in blood and said, “I know I just committed two murders.”

Torry Upchurch, 27, was being sought when he turned up at the Jefferson City Police Department soon after the murders Thursday of 17-year-old Earle Key Jr. and 33-year-old Shantae Hill-Cook, police said.

“During the initial interview, the suspect implicated himself in both homicides,” Lt. David Williams said in a news release.

Upchurch was charged with first-degree murder and other crimes.

Key and Hill-Cook were killed at addresses four miles apart in a span of about four hours, Fox 22 Columbia reported.

Upchurch knew the teen and Hill-Cook was his girlfriend, according to the station.

Police said Key died instantly after Upchurch shot him in the face with a 9-mm. handgun. He was shot when he answered a knock at the door.

Police said Hill-Cook was shot multiple times.

A friend of Hill-Cook’s told police that Upchurch shot Hill-Cook after telling her to “stay in the car,” the station reported.

The friend said Hill-Cook was trying to help her with her belongings and child, the station reported. She said that made Upchurch angry.

WWII bomb forces 10,000 to evacuate Italian city

More than 10,000 people were forced to evacuate the northwestern Italian city of Turin on Sunday as bomb experts worked to defuse a 70-year-old World War II bomb.

Residents in the central part of the Italian city were told to evacuate a “red zone” in the city’s historic district, while another 50,000 in an outer perimeter were advised to leave their homes in advance or remain inside during the operation.

The 500-pound bomb, which contained 140 pounds of dynamite, was dropped by British forces on the city 70 years ago, authorities said, according to The Local.

Turin Mayor Chiara Appendino was at the site and planned to visit residents who had been evacuated to buildings at a fairground near the edge of the city.

She added that a detonator at the tail end of the device required deactivating and was the reason for the operation, according to the BBC.

On Sunday afternoon, local media reported the operation to decommission the bomb was completed faster than expected and residents within the two impacted zones were allowed to go back home.

ITALY POLICE UNCOVER PLOT TO FORM NEW NAZI PARTY, AUTHORITIES SAY

Soldiers had been deployed in the area to combat theft and looking, according to La Stampa, while airspace above the city was closed during the operation along with the Porta Nuova train station.

An estimated 378,900 tons of bombs were dropped on Italy during World War I and World War II, according to a July 2018 report by the National Council of Engineers.

“Based on this data, we estimate that some 15,000 tonnes of unexploded devices are still on our territory,” the report said.

In April, 4,500 people in Regensburg were forced to evacuate during a controlled explosion of a 550-pound World War II bomb that was found in the south German city, according to the BBC.

In 2017, Frankfurt evacuated 70,000 people after a 1.4-ton British “blockbuster” bomb was uncovered.

Steelers players arrive at anticipated Browns rematch wearing ‘Free Pouncey’ shirts

Several Pittsburgh Steelers players showed up at Heinz Field on Sunday morning wearing ‘Free Pouncey’ shirts before their anticipated rematch against the Cleveland Browns this afternoon.

The two teams were involved in a highly publicized brawl that resulted in $732,422 in fines for 33 players and an indefinite suspension for Browns’ defensive end Myles Garrett — who ripped the helmet off Steelers QB Mason Rudolph and hit him in the head with it.

The shirts were worn by a group of players — including captain Cam Heyward and Bud Dupree — to support center Maurkice Pouncey who was originally suspended three games for his role in the fight three weeks ago. Some players wore masks over their faces to conceal their identity and one player arrived in a black mask wearing a Pouncey jersey, according to ESPN.

During the fight, Pouncey was seen kicking and punching Garrett after the defensive end struck Rudolph with his own helmet.

After the fight, Pouncey said he “blacked out” when retaliating against Garrett and would “accept whatever penalty” the league handed out. His three-game suspension was reduced to two games, but the offensive lineman won’t play in Sunday’s game — a reason for the shirts.

Defensive back Cameron Sutton also donned a sweatshirt that showed a cartoon of a person in a Steelers helmet urinating on the back of a Browns player on the ground.

STEELERS’ JUJU SMITH-SCHUSTER POSTS VIDEO OF HIM DRIVING FAST, ANTICS DRAW COMPARISONS TO ANTONIO BROWN

Just two days earlier, Browns’ head coach Freddie Kitchens was seen wearing a “Pittsburgh started it” T-shirt during a showing of “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” with his family on Friday night — a reference to reports suggesting Mason Rudolph started the brawl, according to the outlet.

Kitchens said he didn’t expect anyone in public to see it and told ESPN he “understands it’s not a good look.”

Some Browns fans enjoyed seeing him wear the shirt and are “pumped” to get their own.

“I think it’s going to be absolutely crazy and intense. The rivalry has been revived now, because of what happened in the last game, so I’m looking forward to what’s going to happen there,” Steelers fan and Pittsburgh native Patrick Phillips told Fox 8 Cleveland.

The rematch kicks off at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.

Canadian woman arrested for not holding escalator handrail awarded $20G in damages

A Canadian woman who was arrested for not holding on to an escalator handrail has been awarded $20,000 in damages by the nation’s Supreme Court.

Bela Kosoian was riding an escalator at the Montmorency Montreal Metro station in Laval, Quebec, in 2009 when an officer stopped her because she wasn’t holding on to a handrail, as she was looking through her purse. A sign that stated “caution” and “hold handrail” was located near the escalator.

The officer told her to hold on to the handrail during her ride down the escalator, and the officer stopped her once she got to the bottom. He asked her to follow him and she refused, “because she didn’t think she had done anything wrong,” and also refused to give her identification, according to the case brief posted online.

Kosoian was subsequently detained and when she was released, she was given one $100 ticket for disobeying the sign, and a $320 fine for obstructing an inspection worker.

She was acquitted of the infractions in 2012, and she sued Montreal’s transit authority, the city, and one of the officers for $45,000, CBC News reported. In 2015, the lawsuit was rejected in Quebec court, and again in 2017 by the Quebec Court of Appeal, which said Kosoian was the “author of her own misfortune.”

But the Supreme Court “unanimously disagreed,” and said the sign in the Metro station that said to hold on to the handrail “was a warning” and not a law. They found the officer “was wrong to stop and search her for breaking a law that didn’t exist.”

BRIDE ARRESTED AFTER ALLEGEDLY TRYING TO FORCE PHOTOGRAPHER TO WORK HER WEDDING, PAY HER FOR THE PRIVILEGE

“A reasonable police officer should have known that people didn’t have to hold handrails. Or at least they should have had some doubt,” the court ruling stated, adding, “Even if Ms. Kosoian didn’t act in the best way, she had no legal obligation to hold the handrail.”

The decision continued: “This case was about civil liability for doing something wrong. In a free and democratic society, police officers can’t interfere with people’s freedoms except where the law says so. They have to know the law and act within it.”

The court ruled Kosoian be paid $20,000 in damages in Canadian dollars, or roughly $15,000 in USD.

Kosoian said she was pleased that the judge “recognized the rule of law,” telling the CBC she felt it was important to take her case to the Supreme Court of Canada.

“I knew that I didn’t do anything wrong. It was the principle of it,” she said. “I knew, I knew, I knew.”

Pete Davidson asks fans to sign $1 million NDA before attending comedy shows: report

Pete Davidson is taking extra precautions to protect his comedy shows.

The “Saturday Night Live” star, 26, is reportedly making attendees of his shows sign a $1 million nondisclosure agreement before admission.

One fan posted screenshots of the contract and detailed its demands on Facebook, according to Consequence of Sound.

“I got an email today informing me that in order to see this show I have to sign a nondisclosure agreement,” the post said. “In that NDA the signer CANNOT GIVE ANY INTERVIEWS, OPINIONS OR CRITIQUES about it in ANY form whatsoever including blogs, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram or any other social networking.”

The poster also claims that the contract gives Davidson’s team the right to confiscate, seize and destroy any phones or cameras that breach the agreement, and that any breach will require a $1 million payment in damages and legal fees.

“I understood and was willing to consent to the initial request of locking up any phones or cameras brought to the event, but I think this a bit ridiculous and over the top,” she said. “I get that comedians are protective of their jokes and don’t want their routines rebroadcast, but it’s rather Orwellian to not allow anyone to share an opinion on it. Don’t perform for the public if you don’t want people to have an opinion about it!”

Consequence of Sound alleges that the NDAs have been employed by Davidson since at least November 7, when he performed in Minneapolis.

At Least 10 People Shot In New Orleans’ French Quarter

Updated at 2:17 p.m. ET

Ten people were shot in New Orleans’ French Quarter early Sunday morning, according to police. NPR affiliate WWNO reports that shooting victims were taken to University Medical Center New Orleans and Tulane hospital and that two victims are in critical condition.

Police say the shooting occurred at approximately 3:21 a.m. local time. The police department tweeted Sunday afternoon that there were 10 victims in the incident, correcting a previous police statement that said 11 people were injured.

“We do not know how it started,” New Orleans Police Superintendent Shaun Ferguson told reporters at the scene early Sunday morning. Ferguson said officers were “right there” on the same block as the shooting when they heard it begin.

Ferguson said police had detained an individual but had not determined whether that individual had any involvement in the shooting. According to New Orleans police, the Louisiana State Police and federal officers are involved in assisting with an investigation. No arrests have been made, and no further information has been released about the identities of the victims.

Saturday was the 46th annual Bayou Classic, which attracts fans of Grambling State University and Southern University football to watch the game at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome and celebrate in New Orleans’ French Quarter.

“The shootings on Canal Street early this morning were an ugly disruption of an otherwise beautiful holiday weekend,” New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell wrote in a statement on Twitter. “This tragedy will not define us, and it will not deter us from moving our City forward and keeping our people safe.”

In a statement around midday Sunday local time, Ferguson said the investigation was still in the “very beginning stages.”

“To the victims — you are in our thoughts and prayers, and we will work tirelessly to bring those behind this cowardly act to justice,” the statement said. “That is a promise.”

This is a developing story. Some things that get reported by the media will later turn out to be wrong. We will focus on reports from police officials and other authorities, credible news outlets and reporters who are at the scene. We will update as the situation develops.
