On Thanksgiving, elk with love of apples gets tangled up in North Carolina man’s hammock

An elk in western North Carolina caused quite the commotion on Thanksgiving.

Jim Beaver says he gets visitors often, mainly elks who eat apples in his yard and play with his red hammock.

“They can be really quiet; we often will be sitting on the porch and look up and see 4-6 of them having quietly wandered in the yard to eat apples,” Beaver told  WLOS-TV.

This time, a visitor came and couldn’t quite leave.

Multiple news outlets reported that Jim Beaver told the Haywood County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday that an elk was stuck in his yard with its antlers tangled up in a hammock.

Beaver said he didn’t free the elk himself, in case the animal decided to attack.

So he called the cops.

The Haywood County Sheriff’s Office on Facebook said Cpl. Ken Stiles climbed onto the roof, cut the hammock and freed the animal.

But not for long: apparently a love of apples is to blame.

Beaver told WLOS-TV that the elk, with pieces of the red hammock still in its antlers, has returned to the house a few times to feast.

White House Lifts Mysterious Hold on Military Aid to Lebanon

Westlake Legal Group 02dc-diplo2-facebookJumbo White House Lifts Mysterious Hold on Military Aid to Lebanon United States Politics and Government United States International Relations State Department Office of Management and Budget (US) Lebanon Foreign Aid Defense and Military Forces

WASHINGTON — The Trump administration told Congress on Monday that it had lifted a hold last week on $105 million of military aid to Lebanon that budget officials had imposed without explanation.

In recent weeks, lawmakers and reporters had asked administration officials about the mysterious monthslong hold, which echoed the freeze of military aid to Ukraine over the summer, but got no answers. On Monday, a senior State Department official said the Lebanon aid was good to go.

The freeze on Ukraine aid by President Trump is at the heart of the House impeachment inquiry. Mr. Trump, his personal lawyer and aides pressured Ukrainian leaders for personal political favors while holding up $391 million of military aid.

Administration officials said that in the cases of Ukraine and Lebanon, the Office of Management and Budget, part of the White House, had shut off the aid. Two congressional officials said on Nov. 1 that members of the National Security Council staff had asked the budget office for the freeze on aid to Lebanon.

Administration officials halted the funding to the Lebanese Armed Forces, which Congress, the Pentagon and the State Department had approved, at a critical time. Lebanon has been shaken by the country’s largest street protests since its independence in 1943 and a change in leadership forced by the demonstrations.

Analysts said the holdup could give Iran and Russia an opening to exert greater influence over the Lebanese military, and perhaps even allow the Islamic State and Al Qaeda to gain greater footholds in the country. Iran and Russia are giving military support to the brutal government of President Bashar al-Assad of Syria, which borders Lebanon.

Although administration officials notified Congress on Monday that they had reversed the decision on Lebanon, according to two congressional aides, it was still unclear why the aid had been frozen in the first place.

Some congressional officials have said foreign policy specialists sought to cut off the aid out of fear that the funding could end up helping Hezbollah, the Iran-backed Shiite group. In some right-wing circles, concern has been growing over Hezbollah’s influence in the Lebanese government and possibly the military.

Several Republicans in Congress, led by Senator Ted Cruz of Texas, have backed a measure that would withhold 20 percent of American military assistance to Lebanon unless the president can certify that the Lebanese military is taking “necessary steps to end Hezbollah and Iran’s influence” over the Lebanese Armed Forces, Mr. Cruz said.

Both the State Department and Pentagon, however, have pushed to ensure that aid continues to flow to the Lebanese Armed Forces, arguing that the military serves as a significant counterweight to both Hezbollah and Sunni extremist elements. The military is a multisectarian part of the government.

Senator Christopher S. Murphy, Democrat of Connecticut, traveled last week to the American Embassy in Lebanon. Mr. Murphy said in a statement on Monday afternoon that he was “relieved” the aid was unfrozen. But Monday morning, before news agencies reported that the hold had been lifted, he criticized the administration’s decision.

“It was very clear in Ukraine what they needed to do to get the money released. When I was there” in Lebanon, he said in an interview, “it was very murky. I went there, and all we knew was that the money was not flowing and no one would say on the record why.”

The aid to Lebanon had been held since at least late June, around the same period the aid to Ukraine was frozen, according to David Hale, the third-ranking official at the State Department. Mr. Hale talked with lawmakers during a closed-door House impeachment inquiry hearing on Nov. 6 about the holds on aid to the two countries, according to a transcript.

He said that on July 23, he learned via an email that the top State Department official in charge of Middle East policy had spoken to an official at the Pentagon about the mystery over the delays in Lebanon and Ukraine aid. The “two of them speculated, was this a new normal on assistance?” Mr. Hale said.

“The aid package to Lebanon was also being held in the same fashion,” Mr. Hale said.

He added that there was a wider review of foreign assistance taking place “to re-establish the norms that guide the assistance that we provide overseas.”

It was on July 23, he said, that the Office of Management and Budget said in a lower-level interagency meeting that the Ukraine aid had been suspended. He said the State Department was never given formal or informal communication about the rationale for the suspension of military aid to Lebanon.

Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway says she regrets her ties to Jeffrey Epstein

Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway is speaking out about meeting accused pedophile Jeffrey Epstein.

“I never would have associated with Mr. Epstein if I had been aware of the seriousness of the crimes he committed,” the 46-year-old told Norwegian daily publication Dagens Næringsliv on Monday.

“Through years of work with questions regarding international health issues, I have witnessed firsthand the kind of damage sexual assault does to women and children,” she continued. “We all have a responsibility to fight sexual assault and to support the victims. I wish to express my deepest sympathy and solidarity to the victims of Jeffrey Epstein.”

A rep for the royal house of Norway confirmed to Fox News Mette-Marit stood by her statement to the outlet.

The royal palace also confirmed to the outlet that Mette-Marit and Epstein met “socially, mostly in the United States.” One meeting did occur in Norway’s capital Oslo.

“One of the meetings took place at Mr. Epstein’s home,” said Guri Varpe, head of communications at the palace. “The crown princess also had a brief meeting with Mr. Epstein while he was in Oslo. There were other people present in all the meetings. When the crown princess and the crown prince were on vacation in St. Barts in 2012, they ran into Mr. Epstein on the street. Crown Prince Haakon [Mette-Marit’s husband] then met Epstein for the first and only time.”

Varpe also shared the royal couple was not aware of Epstein’s past.

“During the time the crown princess had contact with Mr. Epstein, she was not aware of the scope, nor the character of the crimes he had been convicted of, and subsequently served time in jail. She was naturally not aware of the crimes that have been uncovered later.”

PRINCE ANDREW’S ‘PUBLIC EXISTENCE HAS BEEN WIPED OUT,’ SAYS ROYAL EXPERT: ‘THE ROYALS CAN MOVE VERY SWIFTLY’

“In 2013, Mette-Marit chose to conclude her association with Mr. Epstein,” Varpe continued. “Partly, this was because she felt that Mr. Epstein attempted to trade on the relationship he had to the crown princess, and use it for his own gain in other relations.”

The outlet shared they had investigated any Norwegian connections Epstein may have had. According to their investigation, Epstein and Mette-Marit have met several times between 2011 and 2013 after being introduced through mutual acquaintances.

The outlet alleged Epstein attempted to bring one “Eastern European woman to Norway” eight or nine years ago. While Epstein visited Norway at least once during the 2010s, none of the private jets connected to the disgraced financier are registered as visiting Norway at that time.

Britain’s Prince Andrew is facing intense media scrutiny after Virginia Roberts claimed she was trafficked by Epstein and forced to have sex with the Duke of York on three occasions nearly 20 years ago.

“He knows what happened, I know what happened, and there’s only one of us telling the truth,” she declared.

The BBC aired an interview with Prince Andrew Nov. 14, in which the second son of Elizabeth II discussed his friendship with Epstein and the sexual assault allegations against him. The royal claimed he had “no recollection of ever meeting” Roberts, “none whatsoever.” The Duke of York also implied that a now-famous photograph showing him with his hand around Roberts’ waist was doctored.

“I have absolutely no memory of that photograph,” the prince insisted. “I’m afraid to say that I don’t believe that photograph was taken in the way that has been suggested.”

Khloe Kardashian wishes things were different with her ex, Tristan Thompson, regardless of how well she co-parents the 1-year-old daughter she shares with the former NBA champion.

The reality star was live-tweeting during Sunday’s airing of “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” when one fan tweeted at Kardashian, “I wished Tristan never messed up! Him and Khloé were so cute together! #KUWTK.”

The 35-year-old replied, “Same babe. Same lol #KUWTK but we are co-parenting so well right now. It is a great space to be in. Co-parenting is such a hard space. Much respect to all co-parenters.”

Kardashian broke things off with Thompson, 28, earlier this year after the Cleveland Cavaliers big man found himself enmeshed in an alleged cheating scandal with Kylie Jenner’s former best friend, Jordyn Woods.

During the episode, a remorseful Thompson gifted the mother of his daughter a diamond necklace and massive diamond ring – a “promise” ring, he called the gesture.

The reality star famously gave birth to the pair’s daughter, in April last year as reports emerged that accused Thompson of cheating on Kardashian in the days before she went into labor.

After a fan tweeted about Kardashian’s reluctance to accept the gift and spoke to Thompson not respecting her decision to break things off, Kardashian said that she doesn’t dwell on the negativity any longer, adding that the former couple’s daughter deserves to have Thompson in her life.

Royal dynasty facial deformity known as ‘Habsburg jaw’ was caused by inbreeding, scientists say

A facial deformity known as “Habsburg jaw,” famously noted in the Habsburg dynasty of Spanish and Austrian royals, can be attributed to inbreeding.

According to a new study published in the Annals of Human Biology that looked at facial deformities and investigated the possibility of a genetic basis for them, the unique chin is a result of generations of intermarriage.

“The Habsburg dynasty was one of the most influential in Europe, but became renowned for inbreeding, which was its eventual downfall. We show for the first time that there is a clear positive relationship between inbreeding and appearance of the Habsburg jaw,” said lead researcher Professor Roman Vilas from the University of Santiago de Compostela in a statement.

Researchers recruited 10 maxillofacial surgeons to diagnose facial deformity in 66 portraits of 15 members of the Habsburg dynasty. The surgeons were able to diagnose 11 features of mandibular prognathism, also known as “Habsburg jaw,” as well as seven of maxillary deficiency, most recognized by a prominent lower lip and overhanging nasal tip.

BLUE WHALE HAS HEARTBEAT MEASURED FOR THE FIRST TIME

The Habsburgs continuously occupied the throne of the Holy Roman Empire from 1438 until the dynasty’s extinction in the male line in 1740. The last Habsburg king of Spain, Charles II, died in 1700. The dynasty’s Austrian line continued through the end of World War I, when Emporer Karl I renounced control over state affairs.

According to a press release, the study found a correlation between the two conditions, suggesting that “Habsburg jaw” is characterized by both and that they share a common genetic basis.

Although the causes of the relationship between inbreeding and facial deformity are not clear, the scientists suggest it is because mating between relatives causes an increase in the chances that offspring will inherit identical forms of a gene from both parents. That reduces peoples’ genetic fitness.

“While our study is based on historical figures, inbreeding is still common in some geographical regions and among some religious and ethnic groups, so it’s important today to investigate the effects,” says Vilas. “The Habsburg dynasty serves as a kind of human laboratory for researchers to do so, because the range of inbreeding is so high.”

Twitter Implodes Over Billie Eilish, Age 17, Not Knowing Who Van Halen Is

Westlake Legal Group 5de59c6d250000503cd2ee7d Twitter Implodes Over Billie Eilish, Age 17, Not Knowing Who Van Halen Is

In Monday’s edition of the bizarre realm of 2019, a conversation about Billie Eilish not knowing who Van Halen is, and whether people should care about that, dominated the discourse on Twitter.

During a recent appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” the 17-year-old singer was grilled by the host on 1980s pop culture ― specifically, 1984, the year that Kimmel himself was 17.

“Do you know who Madonna is?” Kimmel asked. Eilish did.

“Can you name a Van Halen?” he followed up, to which Eilish replied, “Who?”

Little did either of them know that more than a week later this would spark a Twitter controversy between boomers and Gen Xers and those who “OK” them ― and send “Van Halen” to the No. 1 trending topic on the platform.

It began with the folks who were legitimately bothered by the fact that a teenager had not heard of a band that was formed in 1972 and last released an album in 2012 (when Eilish was 10).

Next came the much bigger response from those who said a collective “OK boomer” ― a viral internet retort used by millennials and Generation Z to dismiss attitudes pushed by older people that are perceived as outdated and close-minded.

Wolf Van Halen, the band’s 28-year-old bassist and son of acclaimed lead guitarist Eddie Van Halen, joined the conversation to tell everyone to grow up.

Eilish can hardly be blamed for not knowing the famous band when its iconic frontman David Lee Roth has gone as far as to say the band was “finished” in more recent interviews, according to Rolling Stone. Roth, however, is launching a residency in Las Vegas in the new year.

Perhaps something good will come of all this and people will get a Billie Eilish-Van Halen collaboration.

GOP Intelligence Committee Chairman Refuses To Knock Down Ukraine Conspiracy Theory

Westlake Legal Group 5de5b5141f0000f431df0328 GOP Intelligence Committee Chairman Refuses To Knock Down Ukraine Conspiracy Theory

Sen. Richard Burr (R-N.C.) on Monday refused to say whether he’s seen evidence that Ukraine interfered in the 2016 presidential election, declining to directly rebut a debunked conspiracy theory floated by some of his fellow GOP lawmakers and President Donald Trump.

Burr, the chairman of the Republican-controlled Senate Intelligence Committee, instead played a game of words with reporters on Capitol Hill who pressed him about an interview with Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.), who suggested the Ukranian government worked “actively” to help elect Trump’s opponent Hillary Clinton. Trump later thanked Kennedy “for the job he did in representing both the Republican Party and myself” on Twitter.

“Every elected official in the Ukraine was for Hillary Clinton,” Burr claimed Monday, according to NBC’s Frank Thorp. “Is that very different than the Russians being for Donald Trump?”

Asked if he had seen any evidence to back up the claim that Ukraine meddled in the 2016 election, Burr answered by addressing a different question, saying he didn’t think “there’s any question that elected officials in Ukraine had a favorite in the election.”

Russia didn’t simply prefer Trump in 2016. The U.S. intelligence community has stated definitively that Russia hacked the Democratic National Committee’s servers and leaked thousands of emails in an effort to discredit Democrats and help Trump win the presidency in 2016. Trump has claimed, without evidence, that Ukraine was behind the cyberattack, however.

Burr’s own committee concluded that Russia used social media campaigns to sow discord among the American electorate in 2016, adding that the activity was “overtly and almost invariably supportive of then-candidate Trump.”

The committee also looked into the theory that Ukraine meddled in the 2016 election but “found no evidence that Ukraine waged a top-down interference campaign akin to the Kremlin’s efforts to help Trump win in 2016,” according to Politico.

But Burr did not mention those conclusions on Monday and continued to insist in an extended Q&A that a “preference” for a candidate is somehow on the same footing as a foreign government waging a systematic campaign to affect an election’s outcome:

In her testimony at a House impeachment hearing last month, former National Security Council member Fiona Hill, a top Russia expert, warned that Republicans were playing into Russian President Vladimir Putin’s hands by pointing the finger at Ukraine.

“Based on questions and statements I have heard, some of you on this committee appear to believe that Russia and its security services did not conduct a campaign against our country ― and that perhaps, somehow, for some reason, Ukraine did,” Hill said at the hearing. “This is a fictional narrative that has been perpetrated and propagated by the Russian security services themselves.”

Nevertheless, Trump and his Republican allies on Capitol Hill have continued to seek to shift the narrative that Russia meddled in the 2016 election.

Democrats on Monday slammed their GOP counterparts for  “disgracefully” repeating Russian propaganda.

“The charge that Ukraine had something to do with election meddling in 2016 is a lie spread by Vladimir Putin to get things off his back,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said in a floor speech.

Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) added in an interview on MSNBC: “My hope has been all along that the Senate would be able to survive the Trump presidency, that we wouldn’t be pulled down into this cesspool of lies and mistruths. It’s just sad to watch my colleagues willingly propagate these lies.”

Prince Andrew accuser Virginia Roberts speaks out, asks UK public to ‘stand up beside’ her

Virginia Roberts Giuffre, who claims she was trafficked by convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein and forced to have sex with Prince Andrew on three occasions nearly 20 years ago, has shared more details of her story in a shocking interview broadcast Monday.

Roberts, now 35, told BBC Panorama in a one-hour sitdown — reportedly conducted before the broadcaster’s interview with Andrew that aired Nov. 14 — how she first met Epstein.

According to Roberts, she was working at Donald Trump‘s Mar-a-Lago estate as a locker room attendant when she was recruited by Epstein’s on-again, off-again girlfriend, Ghislaine Maxwell, to give Epstein massages.

PRINCE ANDREW ACCUSER VIRGINIA ROBERTS SAYS SHE WAS ‘GROSSED OUT’ BY ROYAL, WAS FORCED ‘TO KEEP HIM HAPPY’

Roberts said Epstein began to abuse her after Maxwell began giving her massage lessons.

“They seemed like nice people so I trusted them, and I told them that I had a really hard time in my life up until then,” said Roberts. “That was the worst thing I could have told them because they knew how vulnerable I was.”

Roberts then detailed her experiences being tracked by the couple, which included a trip to London to meet Andrew, now 59.

“I was sitting there like I was always told to do. Sit there, be quiet, be polite, laugh if someone says something funny,” she said. “I wasn’t chained to a sink, but these powerful people were my chains. I didn’t know what would happen.”

PRINCE WILLIAM ‘NOT A HUGE FAN’ OF PRINCE ANDREW, PLAYED A KEY ROLE IN AXING UNCLE OVER EPSTEIN SCANDAL: REPORT

Roberts recounted visiting the exclusive Tramp nightclub with Epstein, Maxwell and Andrew, after which, Roberts claimed, she had sex with the royal at Maxwell’s London home. She was just 17 years old at the time.

“It was horrible and this guy was sweating all over me,” she recalled. “His sweat was like it was raining basically everywhere.  I was just like grossed out from it, but I knew I had to keep him happy because that’s what Jeffrey and Ghislaine would expect from me.

“In the car, Ghislaine tells me that I have to do for Andrew what I do for Jeffrey — and that just made me sick. I just didn’t expect that from royalty. I just didn’t expect that from someone people look up to and admire.”

Roberts went to describe her alleged sexual encounter with the prince in some detail.

“There was a bath,” she said. “It started there, then went into the bedroom. It didn’t last very long, the whole procedure. It was disgusting.”

She said: “He got up and he said ‘Thanks’. I sat there in bed, just horrified and ashamed and felt dirty.”

Roberts admitted that her memory was foggy at the time and that she might have some dates and place wrong but insisted she was certain of the key facts.

PRINCE ANDREW’S EPSTEIN SCANDAL WILL RESULT IN ‘HEATED SHOWDOWN’ WITH ‘FURIOUS’ PRINCE CHARLES: REPORT

She also slammed Andrew’s claim that a photograph showing him and Roberts together with the Prince’s arms around her waist was doctored.

“The people on the inside are going to keep coming with these ridiculous excuses, like his arm was elongated or the photo was doctored,” she said. “I’m calling BS on this. He knows what happened. I know what happened. And there’s only one of us telling the truth, and I know that’s me.”

People magazine shared that Buckingham Palace told the BBC that the Duke of York “unequivocally regrets his ill-judged association with Jeffrey Epstein and “deeply sympathizes with those affected who want some form of closure.”

The palace also stressed that “it is emphatically denied that the Duke of York had any form of sexual contact or relationship with Virginia Roberts. Any claim to the contrary is false and without foundation.”

In a previous interview with the BBC, Andrew claimed he had “no recollection of ever meeting” Roberts, “none whatsoever.” He has since stepped down from royal duties “for the foreseeable future” because of his friendship with Epstein and the allegations of sexual wrongdoing with an underage girl. He says he is willing to cooperate with appropriate law enforcement inquiries if required to do so.

In Monday’s interview, Roberts asked the British people to “stand up beside me, help me fight this fight, to not accept this as something that is OK.”

“This is not some sordid sex story,” Roberts said. “This is a story of being trafficked, this is a story of abuse and this is a story of your guys’ royalty, “

A lawyer for Maxwell, who has not been charged with any crimes, did not immediately respond to Fox News’ request for comment.

Iranian activist says unrest is ‘totally different’ from past protests against regime

Iranian activist and journalist Masih Alinejad appeared on “The Story with Martha MacCallum” Monday to discuss the unrest in Iran and the hundreds of protesters killed by the government’s brutal crackdown, saying the movement opposing Tehran’s authoritarian regime could topple the country’s theocratic regime.

“This time is totally different. People became their own leader. They took to the street. They risked their lives. And they had the message, which you hear through the videos,” Alinejad said after MacCallum showed clips of the unrest. “That is actually why the government shut down the Internet. Why? Because they didn’t want the rest of the world to hear the message.”

IRAN CONSIDERED STRIKING US BASES BEFORE DECIDING ON SAUDI ARABIAN OIL FIELD

Human rights group Amnesty International said Monday that at least 208 people in Iran have been killed amid protests over sharply rising gasoline prices and a subsequent crackdown by security forces. The Associated Press reported that the governor of a Tehran suburb that saw demonstrations openly acknowledged in a video interview with the state-owned IRAN newspaper that she ordered police to shoot protesters if they stormed her offices.

Iran has yet to release any nationwide statistics over the unrest that gripped the Islamic Republic beginning Nov. 15, when the government announced that the minimum prices for subsidized gasoline would increase by 50 percent. State-run media did not acknowledge the Amnesty report and Iran’s mission to the U.N. did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Alinejad told MacCallum “more than 500 people” were killed.

The activist also described the protest scenes in Iran, saying a 27-year-old protester was filming one demonstration when he was shot in the head in front of his mother. Alinejad also became emotional as MacCallum played a video of her brother telling her to continue highlighting the protest movement in Iran.

Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and other Iranian leaders have blamed the United States for the protests, something Alinejad disputed.

“Why don’t we hear any single slogan against America in the streets of Iran and across Iran?” Alinejad said. “So that is why I have to say that people are suffering from corruption. People actually are witnessing that.”

Alinejad also spoke of the importance of the Internet and social media access to Iranians and blasted the regime as “criminals.”

“We want to find a legal way to bring the Islamic Republic to justice,” Alinejad said.
