Planned Parenthood aborts new president after eight months

Westlake Legal Group lw Planned Parenthood aborts new president after eight months The Blog pro-choice planned parenthood LEANA wen Alexis McGill Johnson Abortion

Can’t call them hypocrites. PP has always strongly supported the right to terminate in the third trimester.

It’s their choice.

I was going to finish off here with something about how a nonprofit should have absolute control of its own (governing) body, but no, no. Enough. Let’s move on already.

Planned Parenthood on Tuesday removed its president after less than a year in the job, seeking new leadership at a time when abortion rights have come under increasing attack from statehouses and Republicans in Washington…

Dr. [Leana] Wen had been the first physician to lead the organization in decades. The people familiar with the move said there had been internal strife over her management, and that the group felt it needed a more aggressive political leader to fight the efforts to roll back access to abortions

Dr. Wen, a 36-year-old former health commissioner in Baltimore, was among Time magazine’s 100 most influential people earlier this year. But inside Planned Parenthood, there had been significant turnover at the top of the organization since her arrival.

That’s one of two rationales for her departure floating around this afternoon. Wen was a “peacetime” leader, shall we say; between the push to pass “heartbeat bills” in some red states and the new administration rule barring federally funded family planning clinics from providing abortion referrals, PP decided belatedly that it needed a wartime consigliere. Wen was specifically hired, in fact, because she’s a doctor and wanted to steer the organization’s image away from one of a political war machine and towards more of a true health-care organization. But some PP execs grew anxious about that over time, especially with SCOTUS turning more conservative. The question of whether PP is first and foremost a health-care outfit or a fetal disassembly plant was at the heart of today’s decision to can Wen — according to Wen herself:

Westlake Legal Group 1-2 Planned Parenthood aborts new president after eight months The Blog pro-choice planned parenthood LEANA wen Alexis McGill Johnson Abortion

Her letter got more pointed as it went on:

Westlake Legal Group 2-2 Planned Parenthood aborts new president after eight months The Blog pro-choice planned parenthood LEANA wen Alexis McGill Johnson Abortion

“The new Board leadership has determined that the priority of Planned Parenthood moving forward is to double down on abortion rights advocacy.” PP has forever answered pro-life critics by insisting that its core mission is women’s health care writ large, with abortion just a tiny facet of the business. Again, this is why a doctor was chosen as Cecile Richards’s successor, to underscore that comprehensive medical mission. Now here’s Richards’s successor herself telling us that she’s out because PP is indeed a chop shop at heart. Clarifying.

The other rationale for her removal has less to do with the group’s mission and more to do with Wen herself. This juicy BuzzFeed piece about her removal cites numerous sources insisting that Wen was something of a disaster as manager, demonstrating “a complete lack of leadership capability at a time when this organization requires an extraordinary leader.” Allegedly she was warned about her “behavior” six months ago but kept right on doing her thing. What thing? Well:

During the beginning of Wen’s tenure at Planned Parenthood, the staff she brought with her distributed a 182-page handbook on rules and tips for staffing Wen. The “Special Assistant Guide” from the Baltimore City Health Department, according to a copy obtained by BuzzFeed News, details guidelines on timeliness (“Nothing can fall through the cracks”), office demeanor (“Make sure to frequently look up [from Twitter] and make eye contact with Dr. Wen to see if she is trying to communicate urgent information”), language use (“Dr. Wen ‘learns’ not ‘hears’”) and correspondence (“Try not to look at emails more than once. Take care of it then”).

“The handbook was honestly just the beginning of her management issues,” the source familiar with the situation told BuzzFeed News. “Sh*t has been crazy, there was a whole system of insanity: A deep mistrust of staff, giving directives that made no sense, saying one thing then saying something else completely, micromanaging control over what people were allowed to say and not say.”

Trusted longtime PP staffers began leaving. Wen brought in her own staff and reportedly began having secret meetings involving them but not others. And then there was — gasp — this:

She’s mad, I tell you. Mad. The interim president should have no trouble in that respect, at least: Alexis McGill Johnson is a co-founder of the Perception Institute, “a consortium of researchers, advocates, and strategists that uses cutting-edge mind science to help organizations reduce discrimination linked to race, gender, and other identity differences.” No more heresies against transgenderism while PP gears up for political war with Trump and the right next year.

Planned Parenthood President Launches Disgusting Attack Against Crisis Pregnancy Centers

This kind of thing is just depraved.

The vast majority of Planned Parenthood’s “services” boil down to performing abortions or some aspect leading up to performing an abortion. Given the great work Crisis Pregnancy Centers do to actually take care of women, you’d think Planned Parenthood would just slink away in shame and leave them alone.

But nope, these people have no shame.

This is total garbage and disgustingly dishonest.

They are health centers, whether Leana Wen wants to consider them that or not. In fact, they provide far more vital services for women than Planned Parenthood does.

At no point do CPCs offer misinformation to their clients. Instead, they offer them the full picture of what abortion is and the emotional issues having one can bring on. They let women know that there are other, actual humane ways to deal with an unwanted pregnancy aside from scrambling the child’s brain and sucking it out with a vacuum. PPFA has been notoriously exposed in the past for pushing abortion as the only viable option while counseling women not to choose adoption.

I’ve also never heard of a CPC shaming a woman. With thousands of them in existence, I’m sure some worker has gotten out over their skis, but the idea that there’s a culture of shame in CPCs is abject, slanderous nonsense. It’s the opposite in my experience (as someone who gives yearly to a center and whose wife has volunteered at it).

CPCs exist all over the country providing vital services to women who choose life. They do things Planned Parenthood won’t do, like provide actual pre-natal care, post-natal care, welfare assistance, diapers, bottles, counseling, parenting classes, etc. In other words, they actually care about the women who come through their doors.

Ask yourself what PPFA has to gain by slamming CPCs? The answer is simply money. The more women don’t choose abortion, the less the ghouls at Planned Parenthood make in cash because it’s literally their entire profit base, whether they want to admit it or not.

Killing kids is good for business for Dr. Wen and her cohorts. Instead of being cowards and attacking CPCs, they should just admit it and perhaps reflect on the evil they are inflicting on society.

Video footage from June 26th allegedly reveals the ACLU guiding teachers in the ways of new-wave sex ed and gender theory in conjunction with California public schools and Planned Parenthood. Also depicted — according to source Our Watch — is ACLU attorney Ruth Dawson counseling the molders of skulls full of mush on how to help kids get abortions without parents finding out.

Surely this is just what the founders of public education had in mind.

The instructional is part of a larger video by Our Watch documenting the explicit and indoctrinating sex ed being tossed at California’s youth.

John Andrews, whose a parent in the Murrieta School District, described some of that material:

“They talk about mutual masturbation. They discuss gender roles, the gender spectrum, and in the support materials … they take it even further. They discuss everything, topics like roleplaying for different genders, blood play, dental dams … fisting is mentioned. I mean, they mention it all. If I were to show that material to a child, I would be brought up on charges. But somehow our public schools are allowed to teach this to junior high and high school kids.”

During the meeting with educators, the woman identified by Our Watch as Ruth goes into detail about hiding student’s abortions from parents, calling the evasion to questions from moms and dads “more of an art than a science.” She coaches the teachers in the ways of avoidance.

As for a person’s sex, she offers this:

“So we have gender identity, which is a spectrum. Somebody can feel like they are a male, a man, a boy, or also other genders. The important thing to know here is that gender is a social construct.”

Our Watch released the video as part of its battle against socially-left propaganda in public schools.

As reported by The Daily Caller:

[Our Watch President Tim Thompson] says in the video that Planned Parenthood and the ACLU collaborated on both AB329 in 2016 and the Health Education Framework in May. AB329 requires school districts to ensure students take sex-ed and encourages students to push back on sexual topics with their parents – topics explored in the kindergarten through twelfth grade sex education curricula implemented in California schools.

“We don’t want our children exposed to some of these things they are showing, these pornographic, sexually explicit material. It has no place in the classroom. It’s not right, and it won’t be tolerated,” Thompson says.

The video is half an hour long. I could go into explicit detail here regarding some of the more salacious sexual content, but I’d rather not.

But it’s certainly worth a watch.

Please find the video here. Comments by (purportedly) ACLU attorney Ruth Dawson can be found at the 21:00 mark.

Particularly if you watch the video, I much appreciate your thoughts in the Comments section.

I just can’t understand why any of this is finding its way into our schools. In my view, school should be strictly limited to the teaching of academics. There should be no social engineering involved, be it Left or Right.

It seems to me that the entire notion of “education” is taking on a powerfully disturbing “re-education camp” kind of meaning, as children are being stolen from parents in the way of influence that is rightfully reserved for individual families.

If you can, watch the video. I look forward to hearing from you.

Prosecutors May Not Pursue Charges Against Alabama Woman Who Started a Fight That Killed Her Unborn Child – Should They?

[Screenshot from CBS Evening News, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H94umvT1Eco]

On Thursday, I covered the very political case of 27-year-old Alabama resident Marshae Jones, who started a fight last December which resulted in her getting shot in the stomach. Subsequently, her 5-months-along unborn child died. Marshae was charged for the baby’s death (here).

That’s quite a different attitude toward the unborn compared to, say, New York, where the citizenry’s been told it’s welcome to murder a baby only seconds before it’s born (here and here).

But now prosecutors are saying they may not go forward with the charges.

In a press release, District Attorney Lynneice Washington’s office announced they’ve not yet decided whether to pursue the manslaughter charge, reduce it, or drop the whole thing:

Foremost, it should be stated that this is a truly tragic case, resulting in the death of an unborn child,” the release stated. “We feel sympathy for the families involved, including Ms. Jones, who lost her unborn child. The fact that this tragedy was 100% avoidable makes this case even more disheartening.”

Plus, as reported by USA Today, there’s a little bit of shaky legal business at work:

[Marshae’s] charge appears to contradict a portion of Alabama’s Criminal Code. Though the code does include “fetal homicide” language, which defines an “unborn child in utero” as a human being, regardless of viability, the code also states that the prosecution of “any woman with respect to her unborn child” should not be permitted under criminal homicide charges like manslaughter.

“It’s the plain language of the statute,” said Andrew Skier, a Montgomery-based criminal defense attorney.

[A]fter reviewing the state code, Skier said he would file a motion to dismiss if he were involved in the case, “based on that statute” alone.

As would be expected, Planned Parenthood isn’t a fan of the case. That was made clear by Staci Fox, President and CEO of PP Southeast:

“The prosecution of Marshae Jones is absolutely reprehensible. It is more proof that Alabama will do everything in its power to criminalize pregnancy — especially for black women.”

Especially??

But there is precedent, in a way. More from USA Today, in this instance echoing what some of you pointed out in response to the initial story:

Though the indictment of a woman for her own pregnancy loss is unusual in Alabama, it is not unusual for prosecutors to charge people with murder even if they never killed anyone. Felony murder doctrine allows for murder prosecutions if someone dies in the course of an felony.

Stay tuned for more. In the meantime, what do you think the district attorney should do? In the last discussion, many of you remarked on the legal aspect. What about the moral one? What would be just?

I look forward to hearing from you all.

GoFundMe Partnership With Planned Parenthood Proves Abortion Doesn’t Need Government Funding

With the abortion industry taking some heavy blows in the face of pro-life legislation and states turning on abortion organizations with gusto, celebrities, activists, and politicians have been pulling out all the stops to keep the practice of taking life in the womb alive and well.

This also includes various businesses, with the fundraising site “GoFundMe” throwing its hat into the ring, and directly partnering with Planned Parenthood to raise funds in order to fight back against pro-life causes.

GoFundMe sent out a tweet from their account telling everyone that they have partnered with Planned Parenthood, the American Civil Liberties Union and the National Network of Abortion Funds to donate money to organizations that will fight to keep abortion alive in states where it’s being restricted.

The fundraiser, titled “Fight Back: Protect Abortion Access,” centers on the idea that the attack on abortion by various states isn’t just a threat to abortion in those states, but everywhere across America, and that people should give to the fundraiser if they wish to keep it alive:

We’re teaming up to fuel the fight against these bans – and make sure that every person who needs abortion care can actually get it, without delay.

The ‘Fight Back’ campaign is a centralized fundraiser enabling each donor to fund legal battles in court, provide critical services all across the country, join the movement to protect access to safe, legal abortion, and encourage legislative bodies to take steps to protect reproductive rights  — all with a single donation.

The fundraiser promises to do three things with the money:

-Remove the many financial and logistical barriers to abortion access – including offsetting the cost of transportation, childcare, lodging, and abortion procedures – that too many patients face;

-Fuel the fight in the courts to protect access for EVERY patient, and keep health center doors open for patients who need care; and,

-Help continue on-the-ground organizing in states to protect access, build the movement, and ensure elected officials everywhere support comprehensive reproductive health care.

It also notes that 25 percent will be going to the NNAF, 37.5 percent to Planned Parenthood organizations, and 37.5 percent to the ACLU.

I want to point out something that all of these organizations may have overlooked, and that’s the fact that they’re proving that organizations like Planned Parenthood don’t need government funding. It can raise funds for the practice all on its own.

At this time, Planned Parenthood receives approximately $500 million a year, with taxpayers footing the bill. This does not include the various donations they receive from celebrity-backed donation drives or fundraising efforts like the kind we see above.

Hilariously, the abortion industry’s attempts at fundraising may not be as popular as it had hoped. At the time of this writing, the fundraiser has been live for six days and has only received over $40,000 worth donations from 306 people. Compared to the swiftness with which some GoFundMe campaigns receive donations. For comparison, the GoFundMe for the border wall is 616 times that amount with well over $24 million in donations that are still rolling in by the minute. This is pretty sad for Planned Parenthood.

I will make note that the wall fundraiser has been active for six months, not six days, but the difference is still very striking. It would appear that abortion isn’t as popular as some of these groups may have hoped.

What’s more, the announcement on Twitter didn’t seem to go as well as they hoped, with Twitter users expressing anger at the company for partnering with abortion causes, and some swearing they’ll never participate in a GoFundMe campaign again.

Elizabeth Warren Ironically Celebrates the Day of Her Birth With Planned Parenthood

(AP Photo/Jacquelyn Martin)

The great President Ronald Reagan once said: “I’ve noticed that everyone who is for abortion has already been born.”

No one exhibits the meaning behind this better than 2020 hopeful Sen. Elizabeth Warren, who recently, and very publicly, celebrated her birthday with Planned Parenthood, the largest abortion provider in America.

In a video, Warren can be seen walking into an office where several women have gathered around. These women sing the standard “Happy Birthday” tune, and once it’s done, Warren gives a small speech.

“What better way to celebrate my birthday than right here with Planned Parenthood,” she said to cheers.

“We celebrate today,” said Warren, giving the “resistance” fist in the air.

She later tweeted that she was proud to do so, and stands with Planned Parenthood in the fight for “reproductive justice.”

Let’s put aside the obvious fact that Warren is pandering here, and very badly. The much more entertaining part of this entire thing is that Warren is celebrating the day of her birth with an organization who is dedicated to making sure children never have a birthday.

Just a quick reminder, Planned Parenthood kills an average of 300,000 children in the womb annually. This will likely go down thanks to the recent laws passed in various states, essentially crippling the abortion provider, but regardless, Planned Parenthood isn’t known for celebrating birthdays, they’re known for preventing them from ever happening. That’s 300,000 birthdays a year that will never be celebrated thanks to that person never getting the chance to grow up.

And here we see Warren talking about how great it is that she gets to celebrate the day she was born with people who don’t allow others that privilege.

Warren either doesn’t see the irony in this or is fully aware of it and hopes you’re stupid enough not to understand it. All she wants you to see is that she and Planned Parenthood are hanging out together and that one of the largest leftist activist hubs in the nation is propping her up as worthy enough to be celebrated.

It’s all a messed up situation when you really break it down.

Huge News: The State Health Department Rules Against Missouri’s Last Remaining Abortion Clinic

In May, I wrote the article “Planned Parenthood CEO Freaks Over ‘Public Health Crisis’: Missouri’s Set To Become The First State With No Abortion Clinics.”

At issue was whether or not the state’s St. Louis clinic would see its license renewed.

Well, here we are: On Friday, the health department ruled against renewing the license.

Missouri is now officially the first state in nearly half a century to have zero abortion clinics….almost. Judge Michael Stelzer said the clinic may continue to perform abortions until a further court order.

The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services had until Friday to decide whether to renew the license, which only regards the clinic’s abortion services specifically.

The St. Louis location sued the health department for refusing to renew its license, which had been set to expire on May 31st (as per my original article). At the time, Judge Stelzer granted a preliminary injunction.

The department’s director, Randall Williams, has explained that the license for abortion was rejected because the facility in question left uncorrected 26 of the 30 deficiencies found upon inspection.

Those health violations, by the way, were absolutely incredible. Find a long list of them in my coverage here.

Also, here’s something from CNN:

Williams said that doctors involved in the investigation of these deficiencies refused to cooperate.

In one case, a patient had three abortion-related services in three days, first a surgical that was unsuccessful, then a medical that was unsuccessful, and then a surgical again…

Will the clinic make amends with the department? Will the judge let the stay linger until a license can be obtained?

Or will the nightmares of PP CEO Leana Williams and many pro-abortion activists come true 100 miles southeast of Mark Twain’s home town?

Stay tuned.

Sen. Ben Sasse (R-NE) speaks on the floor of the U.S. Senate – 6/21/19. Screen grab via Sasse’s You Tube channel.

In the aftermath of the Democratic party’s disturbing far leftward lurch on abortion this year, including supporting allowing babies who survive botched abortions to die, Sen. Ben Sasse (R-NE) took to the floor of the U.S. Senate Thursday to decry their position, and note how out of touch they’d become with the American people.

Noting that several of the Democratic candidates for president would be appearing this weekend at a Planned Parenthood forum in South Carolina, Sasse said that the Democratic party has become more extreme over the years on abortion, going from advocating for “safe, legal, and rare” to free abortions on demand, and comparing pro-lifers to racists and anti-Semitics:

And in fact, it’s actually worse than this – because the position of every senator running for the Democratic nomination, and at least one governor, is that a living, breathing baby who survives an abortion procedure can be left to die after birth. All seven senators running for the Democratic presidential nomination voted against the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act earlier this year, and Governor Bullock, of Montana, vetoed a state-level version of the bill, just before he entered the race. So as things currently stand, it’s entirely possible that the Democratic nominee for the highest office in our land in 2020 will be publicly agnostic about the moral status of post-abortion infanticide. Morally agnostic about post-abortion infanticide.

[…]

As Democrats’ abortion positions have become more extreme, they have not sought to even persuade fellow citizens with whom they disagree. Rather, they have become openly hostile to Americans who disagree on this great moral challenge. My colleague from New York, for instance, Senator Gillibrand — who will be attending this weekend’s forum in South Carolina — made her feelings clear earlier this month in an interview with the Des Moines Register. In promising that she would only appoint judges who would uphold Roe v. Wade, here’s what she said. Listen to this quote:

“I think there are some issues that have such moral clarity that we have as a society decided that the other side is not acceptable. Imagine saying that it’s okay to appoint a judge who’s racist or anti-Semitic or homophobic. . . .

This is not an issue where there is a fair other side. There is no moral equivalency when you come to racism, and I do not believe there is a moral equivalency when it comes to changing laws that deny women reproductive freedom.”

After pointing out how outside of the mainstream Gillibrand’s stance on abortion is, Sasse went on to talk about the racist origins of Planned Parenthood – specifically its founder Margaret Sanger, who was a eugenicist. Sasse noted that the ugly eugenics and racism of the abortion movement did not die out with Sanger, but is in fact still very much a part of it today:

We could also note that it’s in part because of this ugly history that black women in America are three and a half times more likely to have an abortion than white women. And in some parts of Senator Gillibrand’s home state, black children are actually more likely to be aborted than to be carried to term. Or we could point to the continued eugenic use of abortion. For example, to kill children who have non-life-threatening diseases. In the United States today, two-thirds of all babies in the womb who are found to have down syndrome are aborted. Two-thirds of all babies found to have down syndrome in the U.S. are now aborted. And in some parts of Europe the rate is pushing 100% and there are public ad campaigns in two nations in Europe to celebrate the fact that they’ve gotten rid of all of their down syndrome babies.

But instead of going point by point, I’ll just recommend that anyone who wants to better understand this disturbing history should read Justice Clarence Thomas’s concurring opinion in Box v. Planned Parenthood of Indiana and Kentucky last month, which came down late last month. I guess that, according to my Senate colleague, Justice Thomas is one of those racists – those notorious pro-life racists that are stalking America.

Life News HQ has the full transcript of the speech, which you can read here. You can also watch it below:

Sasse has a 100% rating with the National Right to Life, and 0% ratings with both Planned Parenthood and NARAL Pro-Choice America.

June 20, 2019 – The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled today that President Trump can move forward with his a plan to defund “on-site” abortion facilities by an estimation of nearly $60 million.

The “Protect Life Rule” was introduced by Trump as a fulfillment of one of his campaign promises. The initiative proposes requires healthcare facilities that also provide abortion services and are receiving federal funds under Title X to separate out their abortion program from their healthcare services.

This is a plan widely (and correctly) identified as a way to strip taxpayer funds from Planned Parenthood. Organizations like the nation’s largest abortion provider have traditionally been allowed to house their healthcare and abortion services under one roof. Prolife advocates have long complained that this only emboldened Planned Parenthood to use public funds for abortions although they claim they only use “private funds”.

Politico very helpfully reports that the panel of ruling judges had been previously appointed by Republican administrations.

A panel of three judges, all appointed by previous Republican presidents, said the administration will likely prevail in the legal battle over the Title X family planning program since the Supreme Court held up similar Reagan-era rules almost 30 years ago, though they were reversed by the Clinton administration before taking effect.

“Absent a stay, HHS will be forced to allow taxpayer dollars to be spent in a manner that it has concluded violates the law, as well as the Government’s important policy interest in ensuring that taxpayer dollars do not go to fund or subsidize abortions,” the judges wrote in a 3-0 opinion.

Barring further court orders, the Trump administration can enforce a rule finalized this spring that strips federal Title X funding from any clinic that provides abortions or abortion referrals.

Of course, Politico wants to make sure we know that millions of low-income families will be tragically affected by the ruling.

The administration and anti-abortion movement have celebrated the rules for blocking tens of millions of federal dollars to Planned Parenthood, which serves a large portion of the 4 million low-income patients receiving family planning and health services through the program.

We’ll have to wait patiently to hear opinions and comments from the thousands or millions of low-income children who may get a shot at life because of the ruling.

Lifesite News says the President of the Susan B. Anthony List describes the ruling as a “victory”.

“This ruling is a victory for President Trump and the majority of Americans who do not want to fund the abortion industry with their tax dollars,” said Marjorie Dannenfelser, President of the Susan B. Anthony List. “The Protect Life Rule simply draws a bright line between abortion and family planning, stopping abortion businesses like Planned Parenthood from treating Title X as their private slush fund without reducing funding by a dime. Similar regulations were upheld by the Supreme Court nearly three decades ago. We are encouraged by this news and confident the Trump administration will prevail.”

A spending package provision to block the “Protect Life Rule” has been passed by the House of Representatives but critics are skeptical of it’s chances of passing the Senate.

Because the abortion lobby seems to have no sense of irony or self-awareness, some states have already indicated they would pull out of  the Title X program if the ruling is fully enacted.

Nearly two dozen states, mostly led by Democrats, as well as provider and progressive advocacy groups, have filed numerous lawsuits to overturn these rules. Some states challenging the rule, including Oregon and Washington, have said they will withdraw from the Title X program if the new rules take effect, potentially forfeiting millions of dollars.

Oh, gosh…you won’t take my tax dollars anymore? We’re all broken up about that.

Planned Parenthood President Dr. Leanna Wen calls the move “devastating”.

The Trump-Pence administration’s gag rule is unethical, illegal, and harmful to public health. The news out of the 9th Circuit this morning is devastating for the millions of people who rely on Title X health centers for cancer screenings, HIV tests, affordable birth control and other critical primary and preventive care.

“Planned Parenthood will not stand for this attack on millions of people across the country.  We will be immediately seeking emergency relief from the Court of Appeals. Planned Parenthood will not let the government censor our doctors and nurses from informing patients where and how they can access health care. We will continue to fight the Trump administration in the courts and alongside champions in Congress to protect everyone’s fundamental right to health care.

She could  raise $60 million in a single day in Hollywood. Planned Parenthood is going to be just fine…unfortunately.

Under construction: Planned Parenthood builds huge clinic in Alabama

There are three clinics in Alabama that are open and performing abortions – in Montgomery, Tuscaloosa, and Huntsville. Planned Parenthood does not operate any of them. Planned Parenthood is determined to jump into the abortion business in Alabama in a big way, despite the new law signed by Governor Kay Ivey.

A new clinic is under construction in Birmingham that will replace an existing Planned Parenthood clinic. Construction began in January 2019, long before the bill came out of the state legislative session and could be completed by November 2019. The new restrictive abortion law (the only exemption allowed is if the life of the mother is in danger) goes into effect in November. This sets up the potential for a collision between pro-abortion and pro-life Alabamans. Pro-life groups vow to oppose the clinic’s opening but Planned Parenthood claims neither the new law or abortion opponents were a factor in the construction project.

It will be a large facility, the largest in Alabama offering the services of Planned Parenthood – abortion, birth control, cancer testing, and screening for sexually transmitted diseases.

Located beside an interstate highway in downtown Birmingham, the 10,000-square-foot structure is now nothing but a steel frame and roof. Workers under the constant watch of security guards appear to be installing electrical wiring, plus heating and cooling units.

Planned Parenthood is one of the groups who sued the state over the new abortion law. No court date has been set. Both pro-life and pro-abortion sides hope the Supreme Court will ultimately have to weigh in on the law. In the meantime, other methods will be used to try and block the clinic’s opening.

Groups including Planned Parenthood have sued to block the law, which supporters hope will become the vehicle that a conservative-leaning U.S. Supreme Court uses to gut the 1972 Roe vs. Wade decision that legalized abortion nationwide.

But no court hearing is set, so abortion opponents say they hope the opening will be blocked by some combination of the new law, public pressure, and a state agency.

Regardless of the law, abortion opponents aim to convince the Alabama Department of Public Health to deny a license for the facility, and they’ve tried to convince construction contractors to refuse work on the building through phone calls and emails, said Rev. Terry Gensemer of Metro Birmingham Life Forum.

Barbara Ann Luttrell, a spokeswoman for the Atlanta-based Planned Parenthood Southeast, said Planned Parenthood has been counted on for decades in Birmingham. The organization’s commitment to continuing to provide their services is strong.

The clinic would replace a current Planned Parenthood clinic in Birmingham. According to opponents, abortions have not been performed regularly at that location since 2017. The nonprofit’s clinic in Mobile is closed for renovation.

Though local religious leaders publicly voice concerns that the construction of the new clinic continues, it really shouldn’t be a surprise to them. It is quite unlikely that the Alabama law will survive the legal challenges due to its restrictive language. It would be the most severely anti-abortion law in the land. Planned Parenthood is counting on the legal challenges going their way. If it went all the way to the Supreme Court, the question for the conservative-leaning majority of the Justices will be if they find the omission of rape and incest as exemptions too severe.

“It was surprising when we found out that they were going to build this,” said Gensemer. “My question is after the bill passage, why are they continuing to be so aggressive when the possibility exists that they won’t be able to be in business?”

But an opponent of the project, the Rev. Harry Reeder of the influential Briarwood Presbyterian Church in suburban Birmingham, said the clinic is “designed to give false counsel” to women that abortion is the best way to handle an unwanted pregnancy.

“We still stand and we will kneel in prayer that this facility will not be built,” Reeder during a news conference across the street from the construction site Thursday

Records show that Planned Parenthood paid $430,600 to purchase the lot where the new construction is taking place. The only slowdown on the project has come from rainy spring weather.
