The Pro-Life Movement Wins by Showing Compassion, Not by Mocking a Pro-Choice Congresswoman’s Miscarriage

In May 2019, as lawmakers in Georgia and Missouri were debating and passing more restrictive abortion laws (and as Alyssa Milano was losing her ever-loving mind and threatening to boycott a state she rarely visits and in which no one likes her to punish the feeble-minded voters), freshman Rep. Katie Hill (D-CA) was one of the go-to Democrat voices on the topic, making the cable news show rounds discussing the topic.

While on the campaign trail Hill had emotionally shared her experience in facing an unplanned pregnancy and how she and her then-boyfriend (whom she married, but is now divorcing), both staunchly pro-choice, struggled with the decision before them, so she wasn’t speaking in hypotheticals. (Hill miscarried around the six-week mark.) In one of her media appearances discussing the Georgia and Missouri bills, on May 17, Hill explained to CNN’s Sunlen Serfaty:

“I felt like, ‘OK, this made the decision for me and it’s not meant to be right now,’ but at the same time, it is a loss. And I think even for women who terminate a pregnancy it’s a loss. I’ve heard that over and over again.”

During the interview, Hill announced publicly for the first time that she was no longer able to have children.

“She and her husband tried to get pregnant again later on, but she said she developed problems with her ovaries and can no longer have children. Even now, Hill thinks back to the pregnancy and struggles with whether she ‘might have missed that window forever.’”

Unfortunately, on the Republican side men like Texas state Rep. Tony Tinderholt were quite unhelpful in the battle to win hearts and minds with their tone-deaf and heartless comments and proposed legislation. Tinderholt’s bill:

“[W]ould criminalize all abortions, making it possible for women to be convicted of homicide and sentenced to death for having the procedure.

“He has previously said that his proposal would completely remove access to abortions and ‘force’ women to be ‘more personally responsible’ with sex.”

Many on the Republican “pro-life” side agree with Tinderholt’s tactic, believing that their extreme proposals will force progressives who are okay with post-birth abortion to see how ridiculous (and evil) they are. The biggest problem with that tactic is that these inhumane progressives are incapable of seeing how evil they are. The second biggest problem is that Tinderholt’s tactics drive away people who are more in the middle on the issue and now only see two crazy parties instead of one.

Add candidates like Todd Akin, who just don’t understand biology, to the conservative mix and, well, you almost can’t blame people in the middle for believing progressives when they say conservatives are mean, heartless, religious extremists who are dumb to boot.

One such candidate is one of Katie Hill’s GOP opponents, former fighter pilot Mike Garcia. In audio provided to RedState, which was recorded in late May, 2019, Garcia sounded eerily like Tinderholt when he characterized Hill’s comments about her miscarriage as Hill “taking credit for being lucky because of that miscarriage” and that he was going to beat her on the “abortion issue” by “hold[ing] her accountable for those types of words and those types of actions.” He further characterized a video in which Hill shared her story as “part of The Katie Hill Show.”

In this video Hill said (emphasis added):

“We’d been together for about a year when it happened. I was on birth control at the time, but I suddenly found myself pregnant. It was something that I never thought would happen to me, and if it did happen, I thought that I knew what I would do in that kind of situation. I’d always considered myself pro-choice, and I knew we weren’t ready to have kids….

“But what I didn’t know was what it would feel like to actually be faced with that kind of a choice.…In a lot of ways it was exactly because I was the only one who could make that kind of decision that I had never felt more alone.

“So I walked around in a haze for days. I just really didn’t know what to do. I thought that, you know, the rational decision should have been easy, but I didn’t think I could make it. I really thought that, you know, I was going to end up keeping the baby….

Then one morning I woke up and I had severe bleeding and cramps, and I realized I was having a miscarriage. And I started sobbing with simultaneous tears of relief and sadness, and guilt at feeling relief and confusion at feeling sad, and just so much conflicting emotion, and just the reality of having — being faced with that sort of situation when you’re so young.

“No one can really understand what it’s like to be faced with that kind of a choice.”

Does that sound like a woman who’s taking credit for being lucky she had a miscarriage?

Garcia’s comments were in response to a question, apparently by a moderator, at an event, and can be heard here. The crowd’s reaction – fully supportive – was just as disturbing as his comments.

Here is the text of Garcia’s full answer (again, emphasis added):

“So, I’m pro-life. And honestly, the debate – and you can Google this. It’s still online, and if it’s taken down I’ve got it somewhere. I’ll find it.

“There was a debate back in Simi Valley back in September of last year, September 20th of last year….She was asked about abortion, and she started telling her history and how she had the unplanned pregnancy. She still talks about it openly, so this isn’t me digging up dirt, right. This is part of the Katie Hill Show again.

“At the end of her comments she said, “Fortunately for me, I had a miscarriage.” Can you imagine? She was lucky to have a miscarriage. And I don’t care how you feel about abortion, that was a life, and she was taking credit for being lucky because of that miscarriage. And that for me as just an average American and not even an aspiring politician at the time, I just choked on that, and I said I couldn’t believe that that came out of her mouth.

“And that’s the kind of thing that we have not held her accountable for. So when you ask how are we going to win? You hold her accountable for those types of words and those types of actions. There’s a lot of them. Go watch the Katie Hill show. Go online and look at all of her interviews that she’s done. There’s a lot of stuff out there that she’s saying that doesn’t make sense.”

This writer is in agreement with how Stacey Lennox at the Resurgent views the battle:

“Pro-life people of faith and secular pro-life advocates generally agree that this fight needs to put compassion and support at the forefront. And those of faith should be relying on the unending grace of God to heal and reform the hearts of women who find themselves in circumstances where they see no way out in a culture that has laid open a door to regret and heartache.

“It is up to the movement to win hearts and minds. And we are. The ghastly “reproductive health” law passed in New York State and completely shocking comments by Governor Ralph Northam in Virginia already have people who identify as pro-choice re-evaluating exactly what that stance means. Lulled into “Safe, Legal and Rare” during the Clinton years, many did not realize how far the Left had gone. People are waking up.”

They won’t keep waking up if people like Tinderholt and Garcia become the voice of the Republican party on the topic. Lennox continues:

“We have science on our side. The trends are on the side of life. For those of us who know that life begins at conception because the combination of mom and dad’s DNA creates a unique human being, no amount of abortion is acceptable. For those of us who also believe that every child is made in God’s image, a woman’s decision to abort is heartbreaking.

“But stupid battles like the one Tinderholt wants to have will just cause us to lose ground in the war. Don’t give the enemy cannon fodder. Make them look in the mirror. Just like Abby Johnson has.”

Instead of attempting to hold Katie Hill “accountable” for her words (and it’s still not clear what exactly he would hold her “accountable” for), Garcia is the one who needs to be held accountable and who needs to take a long, hard look in the mirror.

At the very least, Garcia needs to apologize to Katie Hill for his lack of compassion and humanity. No one – man or woman – has the right to pass judgment on another person’s heart or purport to have a roadmap to a woman’s complex emotions after a miscarriage.

Garcia’s comments also demonstrate a lack of judgment, a lack of discernment, and flat-out lack of preparation for the office he seeks. How could he honestly watch those videos and watch Hill choke up and believe she feels lucky? Is that how he feels about all women who have a miscarriage, or are only some worthy of his empathy?

If that’s the GOP battle plan for a pro-life future, just wave the white flag right now. The rest of us will be attempting to show kindness and compassion to our fellow Americans and find common ground.

H.R.962, better known as the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, was introduced in the House on February 2, 2019 by Rep. Ann Wagner (R-MO). 186 Republicans are co-sponsors. There are 3 Democratic co-sponsors.

The reason for the bill is simple:

To amend title 18, United States Code, to prohibit a health care practitioner from failing to exercise the proper degree of care in the case of a child who survives an abortion or attempted abortion.

It provides protections for babies who are born alive after botched abortions. It has nothing to do with infringing on a woman’s “right to choose” – as Democrats often wrongly state.

Every day that Congress has been in session since the introduction of the bill, one Republican representative has taken to the floor to ask for unanimous consent so the bill can be debated on the floor.

Each time, that request has been denied.

On Thursday, Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX) took his turn to ask for unanimous consent – the 78th time it has been requested since the bill’s introduction – and was denied:

After Democrats blocked his attempt at UC, Crenshaw had this to say in a statement:

“There are certain moral issues that are not debatable, and this is one of them. Somehow, we as a Congress cannot agree that babies who survived attempted abortions deserve medical care. While House Democrats refuse to give these innocent lives a chance, House Republicans will continue to demand a vote to protect them.”

The freshman Congressman also posted similar thoughts on Twitter about House Democrats and their refusal to allow the bill be debated and voted on:

I pray they never stop asking. Please don’t ever stop asking.

AOC: “All people should be free” to enter the US?

Westlake Legal Group aoc-dhs AOC: “All people should be free” to enter the US? The Blog Pro-Life open borders immigration Department of Homeland Security Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Abortion

Point of order on this catch from Daily Wire’s Ryan Saavedra. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is in fact stating current US policy on immigration in this speech from yesterday … with one significant omission. See if the omission is as easy to catch as it appears:

I think migration, to me, is liberation. It’s the ability to move and be — it’s the freedom to be, really, is what we’re talking about.  And I think that all people should be free to here, and in our communities. Because I think that when you start viewing human beings as intrinsically valuable, you feel blessed that they have come to you with their presence. And that’s really the shift I think that we need to make as a country …

People have the “freedom to be” without migration too, but the aspirational parts of this message otherwise have broad consensus in the US. Most Americans see others as blessings, and want people who will build strong ties to their communities. That’s why most people see immigration as a net positive — when it is done legally. And right now, nearly everyone has the ability to migrate to the US through our legal immigration system, which is much more generous than most other nations. It might be a lot more generous if we could secure the southern border and control migration rationally, too.

The fact that AOC’s lecturing on the “blessing” of unexpected and unannounced migrants makes this an obvious plea for open borders and no bar on migration at all. We’ll get back to blessings in a moment, but here’s Ocasio-Cortez making more sense on another topic than perhaps even she realizes:

Saavedra might be tweaking AOC on this, but the consolidation of these agencies into Homeland Security was controversial in 2006, too. Not just a few conservatives warned of the same problems Ocasio-Cortez does in this clip — concentrating too much power into one Cabinet position, as well as having disparate missions lumped together into one umbrella. The Secret Service is also in DHS, transferred out of Treasury despite its still-extant mission to combat counterfeiting. The decision to create DHS came after the 9/11 Commission demanded a superbureaucracy to connect all intelligence agencies and a reshuffling of other organizations around defense of the US “homeland.”

That hasn’t worked out terribly well in practice, but not for the reasons cited by Ocasio-Cortez. The bureaucracy has gotten more complicated around missions such as coastal defense, emergency response, and immigration and customs enforcement. All one has to ask is whether that consolidation actually improved performance, especially on immigration enforcement, to realize that at best it was a sideways reshuffle, and more concerning a distraction and dilution of expertise in the upper structure.

However, if Ocasio-Cortez is truly concerned about creating “very largely unaccountable organization[s],” then perhaps she should explain why she favors Medicaid for All and the Green New Deal, both of which would explode the size of federal government. AOC’s entire agenda is about “consolidating power,” only to use it for her hobby horses rather than Trump’s. It’s rather rich to hear a self-professed “democratic socialist” complaining about large government agencies.

Finally, perhaps Ocasio-Cortez should be praised for this part of her speech:

Because I think that when you start viewing human beings as intrinsically valuable, you feel blessed that they have come to you with their presence.

You know who feels human beings are intrinsically valuable and are blessed by their presence? The pro-life community. Maybe AOC is ready to fight for the unborn and their intrinsic value as human beings?

As AOC Refuses to Help Migrants at the Border, Pro-Lifers Take Supplies to Help Families

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez stood by her “principles” and refused to vote for funding to help support the ever-growing migrant crowd at the border and deepening the crisis everyday. The legislation passed without “The Squad’s” help, but regardless, AOC was able to stand tall knowing that she stuck it to those racist Republicans by not helping the needy central Americans at the border.

What a warrior.

Where AOC and her ilk fail, a pro-life group refuses to. Known as the New Wave Feminists, this group of women is constantly making supply runs to holding areas where migrants are taken in order to help them. According to National Review, they’ve been doing this since December:

In December, “our ragtag secular lady gang” raised just under $10,000 dollars to take two van loads of supplies to the Humanitarian Respite Center” in McAllen, Texas, Rachel Lamb, director of Humanitarian Outreach for New Wave Feminists explains. (They were encouraged by the director of the center to bring the supplies and help process the gifts themselves, because volunteers are stretched there.) “We raised another $1,000 to have more toilet facilities built.” Their current campaign has a deadline of July 13 for another delivery.

“We are pro-life because we care about the inherit human dignity of every living person, inside the womb and out,” Herndon-De La Rosa says. She feels a heightened responsibility to not look away from people at the border because “as a Texan . . . it’s happening in my backyard,” she notes. “All are vulnerable and all are human beings.”

Kendra Stanton Lee is a writer at Medium who had just gotten done complaining that pro-lifers didn’t care about the plight of the children at the border, noting that religious organizations had stayed quiet about the crisis thus far. Then she heard about New Wave Feminists, and learned that pro-life organizations were doing more in the background than she had originally thought:

Reached by phone, Herndon-de la Rosa said she had made the same voyage in December 2018 to bring toiletries to a respite humanitarian center in McAllen, Texas run by Sr. Norma Pimentel. At that time, Herndon-de la Rosa said the center was overwhelmed and undersupplied, welcoming 800 new visitors per day, brought by ICE after their detainment. When Herndon-de la Rosa returned home, she knew she needed to enlist more help to make another such delivery. Herndon-de la Rosa was able to obtain sponsorship from more than 50 pro-life organizations to raise $133,000 toward supplies like formula, diapers, and other toiletries.

It becomes tiresome listening to the left proclaim that we don’t seem to care about children outside the womb. Not only do organizations help feed and care for children at the border, the Catholic church has also sent aid.

While you hear people like Ocasio-Cortez attempt to virtue signal over the treatment of people at the border, just remember that she spent her time fake crying at a gate that blocked off an empty parking lot while pro-life organizations did the heavy lifting to actually help.

Planned Parenthood President Launches Disgusting Attack Against Crisis Pregnancy Centers

This kind of thing is just depraved.

The vast majority of Planned Parenthood’s “services” boil down to performing abortions or some aspect leading up to performing an abortion. Given the great work Crisis Pregnancy Centers do to actually take care of women, you’d think Planned Parenthood would just slink away in shame and leave them alone.

But nope, these people have no shame.

This is total garbage and disgustingly dishonest.

They are health centers, whether Leana Wen wants to consider them that or not. In fact, they provide far more vital services for women than Planned Parenthood does.

At no point do CPCs offer misinformation to their clients. Instead, they offer them the full picture of what abortion is and the emotional issues having one can bring on. They let women know that there are other, actual humane ways to deal with an unwanted pregnancy aside from scrambling the child’s brain and sucking it out with a vacuum. PPFA has been notoriously exposed in the past for pushing abortion as the only viable option while counseling women not to choose adoption.

I’ve also never heard of a CPC shaming a woman. With thousands of them in existence, I’m sure some worker has gotten out over their skis, but the idea that there’s a culture of shame in CPCs is abject, slanderous nonsense. It’s the opposite in my experience (as someone who gives yearly to a center and whose wife has volunteered at it).

CPCs exist all over the country providing vital services to women who choose life. They do things Planned Parenthood won’t do, like provide actual pre-natal care, post-natal care, welfare assistance, diapers, bottles, counseling, parenting classes, etc. In other words, they actually care about the women who come through their doors.

Ask yourself what PPFA has to gain by slamming CPCs? The answer is simply money. The more women don’t choose abortion, the less the ghouls at Planned Parenthood make in cash because it’s literally their entire profit base, whether they want to admit it or not.

Killing kids is good for business for Dr. Wen and her cohorts. Instead of being cowards and attacking CPCs, they should just admit it and perhaps reflect on the evil they are inflicting on society.

Report: Multiple Death Threats Sent to Theater Managers Screening Pro-Life “Unplanned” Movie

Westlake Legal Group unplanned-screenshot Report: Multiple Death Threats Sent to Theater Managers Screening Pro-Life “Unplanned” Movie unplanned Pro-Life Politics movie Media Front Page Stories Featured Story Entertainment democrats crime Allow Media Exception Abortion

The pro-life movie Unplanned, which tells the story of former Planned Parenthood abortion facility manager Abby Johnson’s journey from being an abortion advocate to a pro-life activist, has been running into trouble from the moment it arrived on the world stage. Between attempts by social media giants to silence it and activists trying to tarnish it, Unplanned has generated no shortage of anger from the pro-abortion left.

Now, according to LifeSite, several managers of private movie theaters have had to cancel their screenings of the pro-life film after receiving credible death threats. The reports come from B.J. McKelvie, pastor and president of Fredericton-based Cinedicom according to LifeSite, who has confirmed that police are now involved:

McKelvie confirmed to LifeSiteNews that two Canadian independent cinema owners contacted police after receiving death threats they perceived as credible, and that they are “fearful for their families.”

Another Canadian independent theatre owner “has been harrassed to the extreme.”

One of the two owners who contacted the police has cancelled the Unplanned screening, but all the rest “are holding their ground,” McKelvie said.

He did not want to identify the locations, particularly because “it’s a police matter,” he told LifeSiteNews.

The alleged death threats are aimed at independent theatre owners because “they didn’t get anywhere with Cineplex, or they didn’t get anywhere with Landmark,” McKelvie said.

“It’s just a movie. The topic is certainly a hot topic,” said McKelvie. “However, it is just a movie. I find it ironic, they talk about choice, pro-choice, pro-choice, pro-choice, but they’re not giving people a choice to go see the movie.”

The film has had a lot of underhanded things done to it in order for information about it to stay minimal. Twitter was causing accounts to automatically unfollow the movie’s official Twitter account. Several videos of people following the account, clicking off, and then click back on to see that they had been removed from the follower’s list showed up on the internet.

Other attempts to generate ire toward Unplanned involved ginning up narratives that the movie would inspire people to go out and hurt, or even kill someone due to the fact that the film gets the anti-abortion message across too well.

The irony here is that we have people threatening death upon innocent people because they’re showing a film that shows you the horrors of an organization who deals in the death of innocent children daily, and all in the name of silencing said film because it might convince people to cause death.

Astounding logic.

Presidential candidate Julian Castro speaks at the Democratic debate – 6/26/19. Screen grab via MSNBC.

When it comes to so-called “abortion rights”, Democratic presidential candidate Julián Castro believes no one should be excluded from the right to choose – including men who identify as women.

At last night’s Democratic debate, Castro was asked about his position on abortion rights and if his healthcare plan would cover abortion costs. Here’s what the former housing secretary had to say:

“I don’t believe only in reproductive freedom, I believe in reproductive justice. And, you know, what that means is just because a woman, or let’s also not forget someone in the trans community, a trans female, is poor doesn’t mean they shouldn’t have the right to exercise that right to choose.”

Watch Castro’s remarks below:

There’s just one slight problem with this answer: Men cannot get pregnant.

Twitter users noticed, and responded:

Greg at Twitchy documented many more reactions here.

Castro was clearly proud of his answer, as he tweeted out video of it later in the evening:

It’s quite possible Castro was referring to transgender MEN, as they are women who identify as men and can still have a baby, depending on where they are in the transition process.

But that’s not what he said so, you know, we have lots of questions on this matter.

GoFundMe Partnership With Planned Parenthood Proves Abortion Doesn’t Need Government Funding

With the abortion industry taking some heavy blows in the face of pro-life legislation and states turning on abortion organizations with gusto, celebrities, activists, and politicians have been pulling out all the stops to keep the practice of taking life in the womb alive and well.

This also includes various businesses, with the fundraising site “GoFundMe” throwing its hat into the ring, and directly partnering with Planned Parenthood to raise funds in order to fight back against pro-life causes.

GoFundMe sent out a tweet from their account telling everyone that they have partnered with Planned Parenthood, the American Civil Liberties Union and the National Network of Abortion Funds to donate money to organizations that will fight to keep abortion alive in states where it’s being restricted.

The fundraiser, titled “Fight Back: Protect Abortion Access,” centers on the idea that the attack on abortion by various states isn’t just a threat to abortion in those states, but everywhere across America, and that people should give to the fundraiser if they wish to keep it alive:

We’re teaming up to fuel the fight against these bans – and make sure that every person who needs abortion care can actually get it, without delay.

The ‘Fight Back’ campaign is a centralized fundraiser enabling each donor to fund legal battles in court, provide critical services all across the country, join the movement to protect access to safe, legal abortion, and encourage legislative bodies to take steps to protect reproductive rights  — all with a single donation.

The fundraiser promises to do three things with the money:

-Remove the many financial and logistical barriers to abortion access – including offsetting the cost of transportation, childcare, lodging, and abortion procedures – that too many patients face;

-Fuel the fight in the courts to protect access for EVERY patient, and keep health center doors open for patients who need care; and,

-Help continue on-the-ground organizing in states to protect access, build the movement, and ensure elected officials everywhere support comprehensive reproductive health care.

It also notes that 25 percent will be going to the NNAF, 37.5 percent to Planned Parenthood organizations, and 37.5 percent to the ACLU.

I want to point out something that all of these organizations may have overlooked, and that’s the fact that they’re proving that organizations like Planned Parenthood don’t need government funding. It can raise funds for the practice all on its own.

At this time, Planned Parenthood receives approximately $500 million a year, with taxpayers footing the bill. This does not include the various donations they receive from celebrity-backed donation drives or fundraising efforts like the kind we see above.

Hilariously, the abortion industry’s attempts at fundraising may not be as popular as it had hoped. At the time of this writing, the fundraiser has been live for six days and has only received over $40,000 worth donations from 306 people. Compared to the swiftness with which some GoFundMe campaigns receive donations. For comparison, the GoFundMe for the border wall is 616 times that amount with well over $24 million in donations that are still rolling in by the minute. This is pretty sad for Planned Parenthood.

I will make note that the wall fundraiser has been active for six months, not six days, but the difference is still very striking. It would appear that abortion isn’t as popular as some of these groups may have hoped.

What’s more, the announcement on Twitter didn’t seem to go as well as they hoped, with Twitter users expressing anger at the company for partnering with abortion causes, and some swearing they’ll never participate in a GoFundMe campaign again.

In the aftermath of the Democratic party’s disturbing far leftward lurch on abortion this year, including supporting allowing babies who survive botched abortions to die, Sen. Ben Sasse (R-NE) took to the floor of the U.S. Senate Thursday to decry their position, and note how out of touch they’d become with the American people.

Noting that several of the Democratic candidates for president would be appearing this weekend at a Planned Parenthood forum in South Carolina, Sasse said that the Democratic party has become more extreme over the years on abortion, going from advocating for “safe, legal, and rare” to free abortions on demand, and comparing pro-lifers to racists and anti-Semitics:

And in fact, it’s actually worse than this – because the position of every senator running for the Democratic nomination, and at least one governor, is that a living, breathing baby who survives an abortion procedure can be left to die after birth. All seven senators running for the Democratic presidential nomination voted against the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act earlier this year, and Governor Bullock, of Montana, vetoed a state-level version of the bill, just before he entered the race. So as things currently stand, it’s entirely possible that the Democratic nominee for the highest office in our land in 2020 will be publicly agnostic about the moral status of post-abortion infanticide. Morally agnostic about post-abortion infanticide.

[…]

As Democrats’ abortion positions have become more extreme, they have not sought to even persuade fellow citizens with whom they disagree. Rather, they have become openly hostile to Americans who disagree on this great moral challenge. My colleague from New York, for instance, Senator Gillibrand — who will be attending this weekend’s forum in South Carolina — made her feelings clear earlier this month in an interview with the Des Moines Register. In promising that she would only appoint judges who would uphold Roe v. Wade, here’s what she said. Listen to this quote:

“I think there are some issues that have such moral clarity that we have as a society decided that the other side is not acceptable. Imagine saying that it’s okay to appoint a judge who’s racist or anti-Semitic or homophobic. . . .

This is not an issue where there is a fair other side. There is no moral equivalency when you come to racism, and I do not believe there is a moral equivalency when it comes to changing laws that deny women reproductive freedom.”

After pointing out how outside of the mainstream Gillibrand’s stance on abortion is, Sasse went on to talk about the racist origins of Planned Parenthood – specifically its founder Margaret Sanger, who was a eugenicist. Sasse noted that the ugly eugenics and racism of the abortion movement did not die out with Sanger, but is in fact still very much a part of it today:

We could also note that it’s in part because of this ugly history that black women in America are three and a half times more likely to have an abortion than white women. And in some parts of Senator Gillibrand’s home state, black children are actually more likely to be aborted than to be carried to term. Or we could point to the continued eugenic use of abortion. For example, to kill children who have non-life-threatening diseases. In the United States today, two-thirds of all babies in the womb who are found to have down syndrome are aborted. Two-thirds of all babies found to have down syndrome in the U.S. are now aborted. And in some parts of Europe the rate is pushing 100% and there are public ad campaigns in two nations in Europe to celebrate the fact that they’ve gotten rid of all of their down syndrome babies.

But instead of going point by point, I’ll just recommend that anyone who wants to better understand this disturbing history should read Justice Clarence Thomas’s concurring opinion in Box v. Planned Parenthood of Indiana and Kentucky last month, which came down late last month. I guess that, according to my Senate colleague, Justice Thomas is one of those racists – those notorious pro-life racists that are stalking America.

Under construction: Planned Parenthood builds huge clinic in Alabama

There are three clinics in Alabama that are open and performing abortions – in Montgomery, Tuscaloosa, and Huntsville. Planned Parenthood does not operate any of them. Planned Parenthood is determined to jump into the abortion business in Alabama in a big way, despite the new law signed by Governor Kay Ivey.

A new clinic is under construction in Birmingham that will replace an existing Planned Parenthood clinic. Construction began in January 2019, long before the bill came out of the state legislative session and could be completed by November 2019. The new restrictive abortion law (the only exemption allowed is if the life of the mother is in danger) goes into effect in November. This sets up the potential for a collision between pro-abortion and pro-life Alabamans. Pro-life groups vow to oppose the clinic’s opening but Planned Parenthood claims neither the new law or abortion opponents were a factor in the construction project.

It will be a large facility, the largest in Alabama offering the services of Planned Parenthood – abortion, birth control, cancer testing, and screening for sexually transmitted diseases.

Located beside an interstate highway in downtown Birmingham, the 10,000-square-foot structure is now nothing but a steel frame and roof. Workers under the constant watch of security guards appear to be installing electrical wiring, plus heating and cooling units.

Planned Parenthood is one of the groups who sued the state over the new abortion law. No court date has been set. Both pro-life and pro-abortion sides hope the Supreme Court will ultimately have to weigh in on the law. In the meantime, other methods will be used to try and block the clinic’s opening.

Groups including Planned Parenthood have sued to block the law, which supporters hope will become the vehicle that a conservative-leaning U.S. Supreme Court uses to gut the 1972 Roe vs. Wade decision that legalized abortion nationwide.

But no court hearing is set, so abortion opponents say they hope the opening will be blocked by some combination of the new law, public pressure, and a state agency.

Regardless of the law, abortion opponents aim to convince the Alabama Department of Public Health to deny a license for the facility, and they’ve tried to convince construction contractors to refuse work on the building through phone calls and emails, said Rev. Terry Gensemer of Metro Birmingham Life Forum.

Barbara Ann Luttrell, a spokeswoman for the Atlanta-based Planned Parenthood Southeast, said Planned Parenthood has been counted on for decades in Birmingham. The organization’s commitment to continuing to provide their services is strong.

The clinic would replace a current Planned Parenthood clinic in Birmingham. According to opponents, abortions have not been performed regularly at that location since 2017. The nonprofit’s clinic in Mobile is closed for renovation.

Though local religious leaders publicly voice concerns that the construction of the new clinic continues, it really shouldn’t be a surprise to them. It is quite unlikely that the Alabama law will survive the legal challenges due to its restrictive language. It would be the most severely anti-abortion law in the land. Planned Parenthood is counting on the legal challenges going their way. If it went all the way to the Supreme Court, the question for the conservative-leaning majority of the Justices will be if they find the omission of rape and incest as exemptions too severe.

“It was surprising when we found out that they were going to build this,” said Gensemer. “My question is after the bill passage, why are they continuing to be so aggressive when the possibility exists that they won’t be able to be in business?”

But an opponent of the project, the Rev. Harry Reeder of the influential Briarwood Presbyterian Church in suburban Birmingham, said the clinic is “designed to give false counsel” to women that abortion is the best way to handle an unwanted pregnancy.

“We still stand and we will kneel in prayer that this facility will not be built,” Reeder during a news conference across the street from the construction site Thursday

Records show that Planned Parenthood paid $430,600 to purchase the lot where the new construction is taking place. The only slowdown on the project has come from rainy spring weather.
