The Alabama Abortion Ban Seems Written For The Controversy Rather Than For Life

Westlake Legal Group Abortion-20-week-old-fetus The Alabama Abortion Ban Seems Written For The Controversy Rather Than For Life Supreme Court Roe v Wade Pro-Life Georgia Front Page Stories fetal heartbeat Featured Story Allow Media Exception Alabama Abortion

It has been stated numerous times – though not recently, which we should probably get back to doing – that the only requirement for appearing on the Front Page of RedState is to believe in the unborn’s right to life. You must be pro-life to be here because the right to life is the one fundamental belief that has tied conservatives together for decades.

In Georgia, the now-infamous Fetal Heartbeat Bill was the biggest step forward for the cause in recent years. It does exactly what should have been the plan all along. It grants personhood to the unborn child, meaning there are benefits every other child receives that the unborn now receive. A pregnant mother can sue the deadbeat dad of the baby for child support and she can receive the same tax credit she would get the year the baby is outside the womb.

This was always the weakness of the Roe v. Wade decision, and it’s even acknowledged by the Supreme Court as such. When you treat the unborn child as a medical procedure, it’s one thing. But, when you treat the unborn child as a legal person, you are now playing a whole different ballgame, and under those terms the legal game changes.

However, there are some things Georgia didn’t include in their bill. They did not obliterate prior laws that prevent the arrest of a mother who gets an abortion across state lines. They also left the very grey-area exception of rape, incest, and life of the mother.

That’s a tough subject to debate. It’s very easy to say “No abortion. Ever.” but it’s much harder to very specifically say “No abortion. Ever. Even in the case of rape, incest, and life of the mother.” It’s because those situations themselves are so difficult to imagine yourself in and it’s hard to come anywhere close to understanding what your mental state might be at that point.

We’d like to say “No abortion. Ever.” but that’s a tough sell in those cases. So Georgia, I believe very wisely, left those exceptions in. Alabama, however, is an entirely different story.

Alabama passed a sweeping abortion ban last night, and it’s one that doesn’t include those exceptions.

I’ll be upfront about it: I don’t like the bill. In fact, I don’t think it’s a bill. I think it’s a stunt.

I’m not totally sure if it’s just a reactionary bill to say “We’re better than Georgia!” or “We’re way better than the infanticide supporters in the Democratic Party!” but it’s a bill that seemed to have been written to generate headlines and a Supreme Court challenge. It does not look like the work of a serious Pro-Life movement.

The Pro-Life movement has, throughout the years, been plagued by “perfectionist” anti-abortion positions. State-level Right To Life groups have come out opposed to abortion bills that didn’t go far enough. A few years back, Georgia Right To Life opposed a 20-week abortion ban on those grounds.

Likewise, that seems to be what Alabama is doing, but it’s looking less like a case of genuine Pro-Life sentiment and more like “We’re gonna piss y’all off and try to win the Supreme Court now that Trump has put good people on it!”

I don’t even think this bill, if it’s signed into law, makes it to the Supreme Court. I think it will get struck down in circuit court and the Supreme Court just won’t take it up. It’s not the fight they want to have because it’s so farcical.

Other states have tried to toe the line and have still lost in court. Georgia perhaps has the strongest case so far, but even then it’s not a sure thing. Alabama just went for the “viral headline” of legislative bills and it’s going to have negative consequences.

Do I want all babies to survive until they are born? Absolutely. There’s no question that living babies are the best possible result. But, just as much as this is an issue of right and wrong, it’s also an issue of moving the ball down the field vs. going for the Hail Mary. Georgia did the former, Alabama did the latter. Alabama’s problem, though, is that the star quarterback with attitude issues is trying to catch his own Hail Mary pass, and they’re going to end up with a facemask full of dirt when they trip over themselves to try and get the ball.

Something about pro-lifers really causes the left to lose their minds and do things that any normal person would avoid. This too often includes violence, but also the theft of property in many cases. One woman on a college campus, however, found out that stealing is wrong the hard way.

During a pro-life demonstration at the University of North Carolina–Chapel Hill by the group Created Equal, a woman approached the pro-life group and after a few words, stole their sign. The woman then made her way to the side of a building where she attempted to throw it off, but was stopped before she could by the sign’s owner, Austin Beigel.

As this was happening, however, one of the pro-life crowd signaled a nearby police officer who witnessed most of what happened.

“Did you steal their sign?” asked the officer.

“I just moved it,” said the feminist.

The pro-lifers informed the officer that the feminist had ripped it out of their hands, and when the officer asked the feminist why she’d done that she smiled and tapped the sign.

“Because this restricts women’s rights,” she said.

The officer ordered the woman to give them the sign back before she damages it, after which time she attempted to leave the scene while commenting that she couldn’t believe that the officer was protecting the pro-lifers.

“Nope, you’re not going anywhere,” said the officer stepping in front of her path.

It was then that the feminist’s attitude began to deteriorate. The officer said she was being detained for larceny, despite the feminist’s arguments that the pro-lifers had their sign back. The officer said that only happened because he had gotten back from her.

“I moved it fifty yards,” she said.

“I don’t care if you moved it one foot,” responded the officer.

After spouting feminist propaganda about pro-lifers and complaining about having to see them on campus, the officer informed her that she needed to take her backpack off as she was being arrested for larceny. The tears began to flow as she tried to explain that she had every intent to give the sign back to the pro-lifers.

“Do we need to make this difficult and cause a scene?” asked the officer.

The feminist finally complied and she was led away.

In terms of what abortion supporters usually do to pro-lifers this is actually pretty light. Too many videos have come out recently that show pro-abortion advocates using violence against others.

At this very same University, a woman previously attacked pro-lifers with punches and kicks as they held a demonstration just last week. Last October, a video surfaced of a woman who was continuously attacked by a pro-abortion social justice advocate when she wasn’t looking. In that same month, a man roundhouse kicked a pro-life woman who had come to debate him.

And they say the right are the dangerous ones.

State Rep. Brian Sims protects his tweets

Westlake Legal Group Brian-Sims-twitter State Rep. Brian Sims protects his tweets twitter The Blog Pro-Life planned parenthood brian sims

It was only a few weeks ago that State Rep. Brian Sims was harassing teens on the street in defense of Planned Parenthood. When he got some initial blowback to his behavior online his response was “bring it on, Bible Bullies!” Here’s a screencap:

A couple of days later Sims issues a pathetic non-apology for his behavior. And a couple of days after that he was invited to a pro-life rally in front of the same Planned Parenthood clinic where he’d filmed his videos trying to dox and harass teens and an elderly woman. Sims never did show up at the rally. Now he seems to be in hiding. He hadn’t tweeted for several days before making his entire account private. The photo above shows how it looks now.

Usually, I’m not a fan of ganging up on people online but Sims is an exception for a few reasons. One, his behavior was public and had been repeated at least twice if not more times. We’re not jumping into someone’s Twitter feed over a stray comment or a misunderstood joke here (Has Justine landed yet?). This was abusive public behavior which Sims posted online looking for plaudits. He needed to know not everyone approved.

Two, he’s a public representative (not an internet rando) which means hearing from people about his public positions is part of his job. And that’s doubly true in this case because he was insulting people who disagreed with him and literally invited a response from people who disagreed.

Third, Sims has passed up several opportunities to apologize or engage civilly on this issue. He apparently lives across the street from where the rally took place last week. He was invited by several of the speakers to show up and debate. He decided to hide, perhaps realizing his schtick wasn’t going to play well with an audience that didn’t already agree with him. Now he’s protected his tweets.

I sincerely hope people don’t cross a line from criticizing Sims to wishing him ill or making threats. That wouldn’t be helpful here. But he asked people to “bring it” and they did. Hundreds showed up in his neighborhood last week to respond to him and hundreds more donated to a fund supporting a local pro-life group in reaction to his behavior.

Hopefully, he’s learned something about showing a modicum of respect for people with differing views. I really do hope he has but frankly, I don’t think there’s much chance Sims is going to offer any kind of olive branch here. He could still surprise me but his views on this issue seem to be pretty fundamental to his self-image as a progressive crusader. I don’t get the impression Brian Sims is likely to change his mind about how super-righteous Brian Sims is anytime soon.

It would appear than Pennsylvania state Rep. Brian Sims (D) has retreated to his safe spaces in the aftermath of the powerful response to his attempts at silencing and doxxing three pro-life teenagers and an elderly woman at a Planned Parenthood in Pennsylvania in recent weeks.

Amanda Prestigiacomo at The Daily Wire writes:

But now that pro-lifers have responded to Sims’ harassment, such as inviting the Democrat to a pro-life rally in response to his antics, he’s nowhere to be found. The elected official has locked his Twitter account, was a no-show at the rally, has security outside of his office building, and is not allowing constituents in to engage in dialogue.

Sims’ legislative account appears to still be open to the public, though it has been inactive since May 6.

Sims has had a series of bad days after he posted – and bragged about – his bullying tactics on social media:

1) Donations to help pro-life efforts in the state went through the roof. The campaign, started by the father of two of the teenagers Sims bullied, had a stated goal of $100,000. To date, it has raised over $125,000.

2) The mother of two of the teenagers Sims offered money to have doxxed filed a police report against Sims.

3) The pro-life rally held this past Friday in response to Sims’s despicable behavior was a huge success as over 1,000 people gathered to hear pro-life warriors like Abby Johnson, Lila Rose, and Matt Walsh speak.

4) Sims was invited to, but did not attend the rally, which kinda proves what people have said about him all along on the issue of how he picks and chooses his targets based on whether or not he feels he can intimidate them.

One question that has not been answered in the middle of all of this is why Twitter chose not to suspend Sims’s account after he posted the videos of him harassing the women in front of Planned Parenthod. DC Examiner‘s Becket Adams pondered this last week:

Though these recordings appear to be in clear violation of Twitter’s and Facebook’s guidelines concerning targeted harassment, a spokeswoman for the former told the Washington Examiner that the video of Sims berating an elderly pro-life woman and encouraging his followers to “go protest out in front of her house” is “not currently a violation of the Twitter Rules.”

In contrast, Twitter permanently banned right-wing provocateurs Milo Yiannopoulos and Robert Stacy McCain in 2016 for similar behavior.

File this one under “things that make you go hmmmmm….”

As I wrote last Friday, failed Democratic House and Senate candidate Pam Keith (FL) is known for posting some off the wall stuff on her social media feeds, but perhaps none has been as unhinge-y as her tweet from Friday morning urging women to withhold sex from conservative men:

Presumably this was in response to Georgia governor Brian Kemp (R) signing the fetal heartbeat bill into law last week.

Actress/activist Alyssa Milano made a nearly identical call for women to abstain from sex that Friday night. It’s not clear whether or not she’d seen Keith’s tweet, but what is clear is that her fellow feminists did not respond well to it at all (the comment-to-retweet ratio on it is crazy, too).

Fellow actress/left wing activist Bette Midler joined in on the act, too, amplifying the call for a sex strike on Saturday without mentioning Milano’s campaign specifically:

Her tweet received a mixture of responses, with some of them calling her out, while others mocked her:

Others jumped on board, calling the “sex strike” a “vaginal revolt” and promising to do their parts:

I’m not sure if Midler and Milano see the irony of calling for a sex strike in response to a bill that seeks to prevent abortions in the event a couple has unprotected sex, but maybe we’ll find out in the coming days as Milano says she’s working on an opinion piece on the subject:

Stay tuned…

When a rally is planned, it’s usually put on with days and even weeks of advance notice. However, when a pro-life rally was planned in response to Pennsylvania Rep. Brian Sims after he had harassed and attempted to doxx teenage girls who were praying in front of a Planned Parenthood, people couldn’t wait to get together.

According to the Daily Wire, over 1,000 people gathered from all over the country to take part in the pro-life rally in front of the same Planned Parenthood where Sims harassed people. Matt Walsh, who spoke at the rally, noted that this kind of energy will never be seen at a pro-abortion rally, a group he calls “a sad and lethargic thing.”

Former Planned Parenthood exec Abby Johnson, the author of the book “Unplanned,” also spoke at the rally that the Daily Wire described as comprised mostly of women.

“It is time to refuse to ‘choose.’ We will not choose between one or the other. We will respect both women and their children, and their femininity, and their reproduction, and their fertility. And we will continue to do it until clinics like this no longer exist, and every woman who walks into a physician’s office is actually treated with love and respect and care,” she said according to the Daily Wire.

In fact, every speaker at the rally, with the exception of Matt Walsh, was a woman according to LifeNews.

The mother of the two bullied teens also showed up to say a few words to the crowd as well.

“God is moving in incredible ways and we’re just along for the ride; we are standing on the side of angels,” she added.

The Daily Wire’s Michael Knowles also showed up to cover the rally. He noted that many showed up, but noticeably missing was Sims who had apparently been invited to the rally in order to have a conversation with pro-lifers. However, as Knowles pointed out, Sims has no interest in actually talking with anyone. Without the ability to bully or intimidate, Sims was a no-show.

Democratic state Rep. Brian Sims (PA) thought he could get away with bullying an elderly pro-life woman and praying teenagers outside of a Philadelphia Planned Parenthood into silence.

But the mother of two of the teenagers has let him know through law enforcement channels that legally he may have bitten off more than he could chew.

CBS Philadelphia reports:

[Mother]Ashley Garecht didn’t know Sims was an elected official until Monday, but the April 18 confrontation outside of Planned Parenthood has caused national outrage.

Garecht says she was out front of the Planned Parenthood facility located on the corner of 12th and Locust Streets in Center City with her 13- and-15-year-old daughters and their 15-year-old friend when Sims approached them.

According to Garecht, they were “primarily there to pray.”

“I was concerned to keep my girls safe,” Garecht said. “I thought it was very important that I stay calm for their sake. Out of an abundance of caution, we did file a report with our local police because our children were trying to be identified on the internet.”

A part of me was hoping either she or the senior citizen he harassed (or both) would file a police report. Because not only has he not been apologetic, Sims is an elected official and he was very clearly trying to infringe on the First Amendment rights of others to peacefully protest. Not only that, but he endangered those girls’ lives with his $100 social media offer to have them doxxed.

Thousands of people have called for Sims to resign over the incidents, and the Pennsylvania state Republican party has called for an investigation into his actions.

On top of that, Sims’s despicable behavior backfired spectacularly, and inspired Garecht’s husband Joe – the father of the two teenagers – to start a GoFundMe page to help support local pro-life efforts. As of this writing, nearly $120,000 has been raised.

A pro-life rally was held today at the Planned Parenthood where Sims harassed the teenagers and elderly woman. Over 1,000 people gathered to hear pro-life warriors like Abby Johnson, Lila Rose, and Matt Walsh speak.

Sims was invited to the rally, but did not attend.

Friday, hundreds of pro-life people showed up for a rally at the same Planned Parenthood clinic where state Rep. Brian Sims recently berated an elderly woman and attempted to dox young, pro-life teens. Speaker Matt Walsh said he had a simple message for Sims.

“We will not be intimidated. We will not be silenced,” Walsh said. He continued, “So, Brian, maybe now you understand something, that if you try to shut us up, we’re only going to get louder. If you try to shame us, we’re only going to stand taller. And if you try to scare us, we’re only going to get bolder.”

That definitely seemed to be the case today. Sims had no problem bullying a lone elderly woman praying. He’d have a harder time pulling that act on this crowd:

Sims, who said that he lives across the street from the clinic, was a no-show today. Former Planned Parenthood clinic director Abby Johnson had invited Sims to meet her there to discuss the issue. She offered a theory for why he failed to show up: “It is cowardly to defend death. It is courageous to defend life.”

Of course, not everyone can attend a hastily organized rally in Philadelphia. But lots of people also responded by making donations to a GoFundMe page set up by the parents of the teen girls who Sims harassed. The goal was to raise $100,000 but as of now, the page has raised $118,000 for the Pro-Life Union of Greater Philadelphia. I hope Rep. Sims feels good about helping to make that happen. Will it make him think? Will he offer an actual apology instead of the non-apology he gave this week? I wouldn’t count on it. But maybe he’ll think twice before bullying any more pro-lifers in the street.

Here’s Abby Johnson’s speech at today’s rally:

Chaos: Final Vote Delayed on Pro-Life Bill in Alabama After Senate Democrats Stage Mini-Revolt

Alabama state Rep. John Rogers (D) has gotten a lot of attention as of late with his controversial comments justifying his opposition to a pro-life bill making its way through the state legislature.

Today, Senate Democrats are now making headlines for what happened in their chamber during the course of the vote on that same bill.

The Washington Post has the details on what went down:

After a shouting match broke out, the Alabama Senate on Thursday tabled an amendment to a controversial bill that would criminalize abortions by making performing the procedure a felony punishable by up to 99 years imprisonment.

The decision was made by voice vote, angering Senate Minority Leader Bobby Singleton and other Democrats who were seeking a roll-call vote on all issues related to the abortion bill.

They accused Alabama Lieut. Gov. Will Ainsworth, a Republican who presides over the senate, of being too quick on the gavel in moving forward with the voice vote and steamrolling over their concerns.

“At least treat us fairly and do it the right way,” Democratic Sen. Vivian Davis Figures said.

The Hill reports that the vote has been rescheduled for next week:

The Alabama state Senate changed course on Thursday after being poised to vote on a controversial abortion bill, moving to postpone a vote on the legislation until next week.

Lawmakers earlier Thursday had prepared to vote on legislation that would criminalize almost all abortions and make it a felony for a doctor to perform an abortion in the state.

But, according to The Associated Press, Alabama lawmakers decided to table the vote on a proposed abortion ban after a dispute erupted in the state Senate when some Republicans removed exceptions for rape and incest from the bill. Debate on the bill has been delayed until next week, according to the AP.

Watch video of what went down below:

The Montgomery Advertiser reports that Ainsworth was technically right that a motion was made, but that it was done quickly without giving the opposition a chance to respond:

A review of tape of the proceedings showed that Chambliss did make a motion to table the amendment. But both Chambliss and Ainsworth moved quickly to make and sustain the motion, far more quickly than senators could reasonably move for a roll call vote on the motion.

Singleton had told the chamber before the vote he planned to call for roll calls on every motion. He was sharply critical of Ainsworth’s move after adjournment, saying the caucus had signaled a roll call vote by the raising of three senators’ hands.

“I’m saying to the lieutenant governor, let’s get it right,” he said. “We can still get there, but you don’t have to be gaveling us out, and act like you didn’t see three hands when we had three hands up there already raised.”

[…]

Ainsworth’s move also brought criticism from Republicans, including Senate Judiciary Committee chair Cam Ward, R-Alabaster. Ward said he supported the ban but wanted discussion on the bill.

This is what I call unnecessary drama. The Republicans have a super-majority in the state Senate, and are going to largely get what they want out of this bill. Next Tuesday when this issue is revisited, they need to roll it out the right way and let the debate play out and then let the chips fall where they may.

The reaction of this 19-year-old college student almost makes Brian Sims look rational by comparison. Almost.

A group called Created Equal set up a display of pro-life posters on the campus of University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. You can’t really see them in the video below but those posters are graphic depictions of abortion. In fact, this group is a successor to another group called the Center for Bio-Ethical Reform which toured college campuses putting up graphic images of abortion for over a decade. In any case, the images were apparently too much for one female college student who asked the intern watching the signs if he was responsible and then immediately started throwing punches. From Fox News:

[Jillian] Ward approached the group’s display on April 2, asking them, “Did y’all put these up?”

When Austin Beigel confirmed that he did, she raced toward him with fists flying. Beigel was allegedly punched in the face a number of times and was also hit in the stomach.

“F***ing terrible person,” Ward screamed. “You’re a terrible person. You — this is not okay. This is not okay. This is not okay. Shut the f**k up right now. This is wrong. This is triggering. You’re not an innocent human being. You’re a terrible person.”

She’s not wrong about the images being triggering. They’re meant to be. But they’re meant to trigger thought and reflection, not violence. Here’s the video:

The guy filming (and being punched) is named Austin Beigel. According to the Created Equal website, he’s a student himself as well as an intern with the group. He handled this bad situation about as well as it could be handled. He backed away and told her to stop and to calm down. Most importantly, he didn’t respond in kind either verbally or by shoving or hitting the young woman back. Police did arrive and the woman was given a citation for misdemeanor assault. That seems appropriate given that this clearly was assault and that she didn’t seem capable of doing any serious damage.

Something similar happened at Indiana University last year. In that instance, a 21-year-old vandalized several of the group’s signs with spray paint and then tore them apart. There’s a revealing moment in this clip where someone driving past as this guy vandalizes the pro-life signs shouts “I won’t do it; I support you.” It’s a small minority of progressives who get carried away with violence, vandalism, or harassment but there’s a larger group who support them either openly or tacitly.

I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that Jillian Ward becomes a far-left hero on campus for throwing these punches, just as I expect a lot of people on the left think Rep. Brian Sims is a hero even if they’re a bit ashamed to say so out loud in mixed company.
