Arizona man accused of cashing dead mom’s benefits after burying her in backyard

A 97-year-old woman who died in December was buried by her son in her backyard — all because he wanted to keep cashing her monthly benefit checks, Arizona authorities said.

Leonie Shannon’s body was unearthed Wednesday in San Tan Valley pursuant to a search warrant, the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

Daniel Shannon, 66, was charged with fraud and improper disposal of his mother’s body, the news release said.

“Our detectives did a great job on this case, and in bringing Mr. Daniels to justice,” Sheriff Mark Lamb said. “These types of cases are especially troublesome when the crimes involve family members.”

Detectives were tipped off to the alleged scheme by a person who was concerned the mother hadn’t been seen in some time, FOX10 Phoenix reported.

Shannon initially said the woman wandered off and never returned, but then allegedly admitted she passed away on Dec. 21, according to the station.

The sheriff’s office says Shannon decided not to report her death and bury her in the backyard so he could continue to cash the checks she was drawing from Social Security and the Veterans Administration, the station reported.

Shannon allegedly told detectives he needed to keep getting the benefit money in order to help pay for a patent on his invention, the news release said.

Maleah Davis was killed, Houston cops now suspect

Maleah Davis, the 4-year-old Houston girl who’s been the focus of an intensive search for nearly three weeks, has likely been murdered, the city’s top cop said Thursday.

Davis was reported missing by her mother’s boyfriend, who has been jailed in connection with her disappearance. Though officials say Davis is assumed to be dead, authorities have yet to find her remains.

“We really believe we have a little girl that’s been murdered. We believe that she’s out there somewhere, and we want to bring her home,” Police Chief Art Acevedo said.

He appealed to the public for help in finding the girl.

The keynote speaker at Morehouse College’s commencement ceremony announced a grant Sunday wiping out the student debt of the entire 2019 graduating class.

Billionaire Robert Smith’s surprise gift in front of nearly 400 graduating seniors may be worth about $40 million, officials said.

“My family is going to create a grant to eliminate your student loans,” Smith said, according to WXIA-TV. “You great Morehouse men are bound only by the limits of your own conviction and creativity.”

Tonga Releford, whose son Charles Releford III is a member of the Class of 2019, estimated that his student loans total about $70,000, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

“I feel like it’s Mother’s Day all over again,” she said.

The announcement elicited the biggest cheers of the morning.

“When Dr. King said that the ‘arc of the moral universe bends toward justice,’ he wasn’t saying it bends on its own accord. It bends because we choose to put our shoulders into it together and push,” Smith told the ceremony, according to WXIA.

1780 Alexander Hamilton letter was stolen more than 74 years ago; now give it back

A 1780 Alexander Hamilton letter stolen more than 74 years ago in Boston has resurfaced in Virginia.

The letter was addressed to Marquis de Lafayette in Rhode Island and warned of a British plan to attack Newport.

“We have just received advice from New York through different channels that the enemy are making an embarkation with which they menace the French fleet and army,” Hamilton wrote. “Fifty transports are said to have gone up the Sound to take in troops and proceed directly to Rhode Island.

The attack was called off when the French hurried to fortify defenses, The Associated Press reported.

Boston U.S. Attorney Andrew Leilling on Wednesday went to court to demand the return of the letter to the Massachusetts Archives, from which it went missing.

“The theft, which also involved original papers of George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Paul Revere and Benedict Arnold, among others, was not discovered for several years,” Lilling’s forfeiture action says.

A Massachusetts Archives employee stole the documents between 1937 and 1945 and sold them to dealers in rare documents and books.

That person was arrested in 1950 on a larceny charge.

Lawyers for Leilling believe the letter wound up in the hands of a collector who purchased it from a dealer in Syracuse, N.Y., in the 1940s.

When that collector died, his collection was divided among his children.

In November, the heir who wound up with the letter assigned it to an auction house in Alexandria, Va. The auction house valued the letter at $35,000.

Before putting the letter up for sale, an auction house researcher went on Founders.com to verify the document’s authenticity and learned that it was missing from the Massachusetts Archives, Boston.com reported Saturday.

Rep. Michael Waltz: Tlaib should apologize for controversial Holocaust comments

A Republican congressman on Monday called on Rashida Tlaib to apologize for controversial comments in which she said that thinking about the Holocaust gave her “kind of a calming feeling.”

“If you look at the entire context of the interview, what she was trying, very badly, to say that she loved or was calming wasn’t necessarily the Holocaust it was that her ancestors provided the land for the safe haven for the Jews post-Holocaust,” Rep. Michael Waltz of Florida told Fox News’ “America’s Newsroom.”

“What I really have strong disagreement with is she seemed to create some moral equivalency between the Holocaust and the fighting that then went on between the Palestinians and the Jews and I think that’s completely unacceptable and I think she should apologize for it.”

TRUMP BLASTS TLAIB OVER HOLOCAUST COMMENTS, ACCUSES HER OF ‘TREMENDOUS HATRED’

Tlaib, D-Mich., spoke about the Holocaust during a Yahoo News podcast released Friday.

“There’s kind of a calming feeling I always tell folks when I think of the Holocaust, and the tragedy of the Holocaust, and the fact that it was my ancestors, Palestinians, who lost their land and some lost their lives, their livelihood, their human dignity, their existence in many ways, have been wiped out, and some people’s passports,” she said.

She added, “I mean, just all of it was in the name of trying to create a safe haven for Jews, post-the Holocaust, post-the tragedy and the horrific persecution of Jews across the world at that time, and I love the fact that it was my ancestors that provided that, right, in many ways. But they did it in a way that took their human dignity away, right, and it was forced on them. And so when I think about a one-state, I think about the fact that why couldn’t we do it in a better way?”

President Trump on Monday criticized the comments in a tweet, accusing Tlaib of having tremendous hatred of Israel and the Jewish people.

“Can you imagine what would happen if I ever said what she said, and says?” Trump said.

RASHIDA TLAIB SLAMMED BY HOUSE GOP OVER COMMENTS ON HOLOCAUST, PALESTINIANS

Tlaib, the first Palestinian-American woman to be elected to Congress, stood by her comments.

“Policing my words, twisting & turning them to ignite vile attacks on me will not work,” she said. “All of you who are trying to silence me will fail miserably. I will never allow you to take my words out of context to push your racist and hateful agenda. The truth will always win.”

Waltz said if Tlaib’s comments are perceived as anti-Semitic, “then she should clarify and again should apologize.”

“Look at the end of the day the reality is that the Palestinians and the surrounding Arab nations have been fighting and trying to destroy the nation of Israel for the last 50, 60, 70 years and that’s what needs to be fully acknowledged and that’s what we need to move past.”

Feds arrest man in deadly machete attack on Appalachian Trail in Virginia

An arrest was announced Sunday after a machete attack on the Appalachian Trail in Virginia left one man dead and a woman seriously injured.

James Jordan, 30, of West Yarmouth, Mass., was arrested early Saturday on a federal complaint charging him with murder and assault with intent to murder in connection with the “senseless and brutal attack” on the two unidentified hikers, Abingdon U.S. Attorney Thomas Cullen said.

Jordan was known to hike the Appalachian Trail under the moniker “Sovereign,” WCYB-TV reported. He was arrested in April for threatening hikers on the Appalachian Trail in Tennessee, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to probation, according to WJHL-TV.

“I commend local law enforcement in Wythe and Smyth Counties for mobilizing successful rescue and tactical operations in this remote region,” Cullen said. “Thanks to their efforts, the suspect was safely apprehended and a seriously wounded victim received critical medical care.”

After Jordan’s April arrest in Unicoi County, Tenn., he pleaded guilty to criminal impersonation, drug possession and public intoxication, WJHL reported. He also was fined as part of his sentence.

A teacher and a classroom aide have been accused of verbally abusing young autistic students at a Florida elementary school, according to a report.

The accusations against the two who worked at Pasadena Lake Elementary School in Pembroke Pines resulted in their removal from the classroom while the district and the Broward County Sheriff’s Office investigates, Fox 7 Miami reported Thursday.

The alleged verbal abuse was recorded with an “Angel Sense,” a device that allows parents of autistic children to listen to their children’s surroundings, the station reported.

The station aired one clip in which a woman is heard saying, “So do your work. (Inaudible) Drag you’re a– over there. Watch me. Try me.”

The station also aired two other clips in which a woman is heard using profanity in one and screaming at a child, “go to time out” in the other.

Parent Matt Adar told the station he made the recordings after equipping his 6-year-old autistic son with the device. He said he grew suspicious because his son started using swear words at home that he could only have picked up in the classroom.

“My son mimics everything he hears, but he wasn’t whispering it,” Adar told the station. “He was saying it in an aggressive tone. ‘Get over here. I’m going to eff you up. Get over here. I’m going to mess you up.’ So I knew that it was an authoritative figure.”

Las Vegas woman accused of drowning 2-year-old daughter in bathtub

A Las Vegas woman has been accused of murder after calling police to report that her 2-year-old daughter had drowned in the bathtub.

An officer who responded to the call Saturday found the girl face up in the bathtub, which was full of water, Las Vegas police spokesman Lt. Ray Spencer said. The girl was fully clothed.

“Disturbing is an understatement,” Spencer said, according to Fox 5 Las Vegas. “I have officers out here who are extremely shaken up. We have a 2-year-old child that was senselessly murdered.”

The name of the woman and her daughter weren’t released. The mother was arrested on suspicion of murder.

The 911 operator was unable to persuade the woman to rescue the child from the water and administer CPR, he said.

Spencer said it took several minutes for the woman to answer the door when the first officer arrived, the station reported.
