Connecticut woman, 79, accused of drifting onto shoulder, killing man with her Volkswagen Beetle

A 79-year-old Connecticut woman was charged Monday in the death of a trucker who was struck by her Volkswagen Beetle when it drifted onto the shoulder of a roadway, police and local media reported.

Ramona Rubin, of Derby, was charged with one count of misconduct with a motor vehicle and one count of failure to drive in a proper lane, Town of Orange police said in a news release. She was released on $25,000 bond.

“The arrest stems from a lengthy investigation by the department’s accident reconstruction team into a motor vehicle collision on March 25, 2019, on Derby Avenue in which Ms. Rubin’s vehicle drifted onto the right shoulder of the roadway and fatally struck Steven Sylvester,” the news release said.

He wasn’t represented by a lawyer as of Friday, the paper reported.

Ex-NFL player accused of trashing his 2 businesses to make it look like a hate crime

A former NFL player has been accused of trashing a restaurant and an ice cream shop he owned near Atlanta to make it look like a hate crime.

Gwinett County police say they found the n-word, “monkey,” “MAGA” and swastikas scrawled on the walls and booths of the two businesses, Create & Bake Pizza and Coughman’s Creamery in Lawrenceville.

Edawn Coughman, 31, of Buford, was arrested Thursday on charges of false reporting a burglary, insurance fraud and concealing a license plate before being bonded out of jail, police said.

EX-NFL DEFENSIVE BACK TERRELL ROBERTS KILLED IN CALIFORNIA SHOOTING: REPORTS

Coughman was signed out of Shaw University to the Seattle Seahawks practice squad in 2012 and then spent parts of the next season with the Dallas Cowboys and Buffalo Bills, the Gwinnett Daily Post reported Friday. He was claimed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2014 and then signed by the Washington Redskins later that season.

Police said in a news release that an officer responded Wednesday night to a 911 call reporting a man damaging the restaurant and the ice cream shop and getting away in a truck without a license plate. The restaurant’s rear door showed signs of a break-in.

When officers pulled over the truck they found Coughman behind the wheel and learned he was the owner of the damaged businesses, according to the news release. In the truck were several TVs that appeared to have been ripped from a wall.

“It’s possible he was trying to stage this as a hate crime,” Cpl. Michele Pihera told the Daily Post. “We don’t know if he was trying to get attention for this. Trump says he and Netanyahu discussed possible US-Israeli defense treaty

President Trump said he spoke Saturday to Israel leader Benjamin Netanyahu about the possibility of a “mutual defense treaty” between the two nations—just days before Israeli voters go to the polls to decide the fate of their embattled leader.

Trump said in a tweet that such a defense pact — a Netanyahu priority — would “further anchor the tremendous alliance between our two countries.”

“I look forward to continuing those discussions after the Israeli Elections when we meet at the United Nations later this month!” Trump said.

The comments just three days before the election on Netanyahu’s political future were the latest effort by Trump to back Netanyahu, perhaps his closest personal ally on the world stage.

NETANYAHU WHISKED OFFSTAGE AT CAMPAIGN RALLY AFTER ROCKETS FIRED FROM GAZA STRIP

The timing of the Trump tweet appeared aimed at bolstering Netanyahu’s effort to remain in power by showcasing his close ties to Trump, Reuters reported.

Opinion polls predict a close race, five months after an inconclusive election in which Netanyahu declared himself the winner but failed to form a coalition government.

Some Israeli officials have promoted the idea of building on Netanyahu’s strong ties to the Trump administration to forge a new defense treaty with the U.S.– focused especially on guarantees of assistance in any conflict with Iran, Reuters reported.

NETANYAHU PLEDGES TO ANNEX ENTIRE JORDAN VALLEY WITH SUPPORT OF US IF HE WINS ISRAELI ELECTION

But some of Netanyahu’s critics have argued that such an agreement could tie Israel’s hands and deny it military autonomy.

Netanyahu thanked Trump for his announcement, saying he looked forward to meeting him at the United Nations General Assembly, The Wall Street Journal reported.

“The Jewish State has never had a greater friend in the White House,” Netanyahu said.

The White House didn’t immediately elaborate on the tweet. A mutual defense treaty could take months to formalize, the Journal added.

Three to five members of a New Hampshire high school football team were disciplined after video surfaced showing a wild duck being attacked with a broomstick and then choked to death, according to reports this week.

The incident happened in August at a football camp sponsored by Kennett High School, but the school’s response was still roiling the community a month later.

The video of the duck attack was posted online, local media reported.

“The heinous activity of a duck being hit over the head with a broomstick is what ended up happening,” Conway School District Superintendent Kevin Richard told WMUR-TV Sept. 6.

School district members said three to five boys, believed to be 10th graders and 11th graders, had been punished with game suspensions, the Conway Daily Sun reported Thursday.

They were also ordered to perform community service and undergo mental-health assessment counseling.

The paper quoted an eye doctor as saying she was planning to protest the school district’s handling of the incident at Kennett’s football game Thursday night. It’s unclear if the protest was held.

“There will be a PEACEFUL protest at the Kennett Football home opener, in response to many community members feeling the duck incident has not been sufficiently handled,” Sawyer wrote on Facebook, according to the paper.

On Monday the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department issued a statement saying the agency felt the school acted swiftly and appropriately.

“Regarding the situation w/ the children who killed the duck, the media were not originally aware of the entire situation,” the statement said. “The kids involved did receive substantial consequences.”

An international drug smuggling ring was busted in Australia — with the help of an angry seal.

The seal prevented the getaway of two foreign nationals from a small island off the Geraldton coast, according to reports.

“They woke it up and it jumped up with its big chest out and bellowed at them,” Damien Healy, Geraldton Volunteer Marine Rescue Service vice commander, told ABC radio, according to the BBC.

Huynh pleaded not guilty and said he choked Rex to get him to stop biting another neighbor’s golden doodle named Quincy.

Men arrested breaking into Iowa courthouse claim they were hired to test alarm system

Iowa court officials have denied authorizing an overnight courthouse burglary after the arrest of two cybersecurity experts who said they were hired to break into the building.

Court administrators issued the denial after the arrest of Justin Wynn, 29, of Florida, and Gary Demercurio, 43, of Washington state, for burglarizing the Dallas County Courthouse in Adel around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Each was charged with third-degree burglary and possession of burglary tools, the Des Moines Register reported Thursday.

A giant frying pan filled with dumplings exploded at a food festival in western Germany, killing one person and injuring 14 others.

The injured included five–four burn victims and one heart attack victim–who were fighting for their life, German news media reported. The victim who died was severely burned and succumbed to her injuries Monday.

Witnesses said the victims were running around “like torches” at the Backesfest festival in the village of Freudenberg, the Independent reported.
