Redskins’ Trent Williams still feeling effects of surgery to remove cancerous growth, hits GM Bruce Allen

Washington Redskins offensive lineman Trent Williams is still feeling the after-effects of the surgery he had in the offseason to remove a cancerous growth from his head.

Williams had the growth removed in April, which turned out to be cancerous. He accused the team’s medical staff of downplaying the severity of the growth on his skull in October.

WASHINGTON REDSKINS’ TRENT WILLIAMS REVEALS DOCTORS GAVE HIM DIRE DIAGNOSIS: ‘I ALMOST LOST MY LIFE’

He told reporters at the time he raised the issue in 2013 and the growth on his head grew substantially over time. He said he had the tumor removed from his skull and needs to get a checkup every six months to make sure he is in good health.

Williams returned to the team in October after the Redskins decline to release him and failed to find a suitable trade. He had been hoping to return to practice and possibly play this season but he failed a physical due to the discomfort of wearing a helmet.

The discomfort is due to half of Williams’ skin on his head is numb, The Washington Post reported Thursday.

He told the newspaper that any kind of pressure he puts on his head causes a burning or tingling feeling. The doctor who did the operation to remove the growth told him that it would take about 18 months for it to go away.

SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS’ RICHARD SHERMAN DEFENDS ANALYST AFTER LAMAR JACKSON REMARKS LED TO SUSPENSION

While he was about to receive a helmet during the team’s bye week, the Redskins placed him on the non-football injury list Nov. 7. The move exacerbated the war between the offensive lineman and the organization as Williams said he felt like general manager Bruce Allen made the move on purpose.

“It’s kind of a vindictive move, and it just showed their hand on how they wanted to operate,” he told The Washington Post. “I mean, I had until Tuesday and the new helmet Riddell was talking about was coming in on Monday, so for them to prematurely put me on the list without taking [time to see if the helmet would work] goes to show you that they didn’t really want me to play anyway.”

Allen called Williams’ allegations “comical” and said Williams chose to stay away from the Redskins’ facility with his holdout and told reporters when he returned that he had a non-football injury.

Williams has been with the Redskins since the 2010 season. He has earned a Pro Bowl selection seven times. He still has one more year left on his contract. He is owed $12.5 million in 2020.

Gary Sheffield, 51, shows off his power more than 10 years after his last major league game

Gary Sheffield was a nine-time All-Star, won five Silver Sluggers and a World Series championship.

He has not played in the majors since the 2009 season with New York Mets, but a recent video of him taking batting practice appeared to prove that he hasn’t lost his power.

Sheffield, 51, posted the video of him hitting dingers over a tall chain-link fence that surrounded a field earlier this week. He was also smoking a cigar during the batting practice.

“51 years old and still has the fastest hands alive #garysheffieldswing haha old man still got it,” he captioned.

Ken Griffey Jr. and Andruw Jones were among those who commented on the video. Griffey appeared stunned that Sheffield was launching the baseball, while Jones said that the former outfielder still had it.

Sheffield played 22 years in the major leagues. He helped the Florida Marlins to a World Series championship in 1997.

Though he never won an MVP award, Sheffield came close in 1992, 2003 and 2004.

In 1992, Sheffield roamed the outfielder for the San Diego Padres. He hit a National League-leading .330 with a .965 OPS and hit 33 home runs. He finished third in NL MVP voting behind the winner Barry Bonds and Terry Pendleton.

In 2003, Sheffield would finish in third place with the Atlanta Braves. He hit .330 with a 1.023 OPS and 39 home runs. But again he would be upended by Barry Bonds and Albert Pujols.

In 2004, Sheffield was on the New York Yankees. With a .290 batting average and a .927 OPS with 36 home runs, he would finish in second place in the American League MVP voting behind Vladimir Guerrero.

Sheffield made his debut on the Baseball Hall of Fame ballot in 2015. He’s never received more than 13.6 percent of the vote.

Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten appeared visibly upset on the sidelines Thursday during the team’s loss to the Chicago Bears.

Witten had five catches for 37 yards as the Cowboys picked up their third straight loss and fourth in five games. He was seen in two instances on the sideline yelling at coaches and teammates. He was also visibly upset with the play-calling as well.

The 16-year veteran acknowledged he was upset after the game and that the loss was worse than the 31-24 score indicated.

“I don’t think it matters enough compared to any other time,” he told reporters, according to the Dallas-Morning News. “We’re all frustrated, we’re all pissed. You see the game — it wasn’t good enough. We got to get better, and we better do it in a hurry. We’ve been given a gift with where our record is, 6-7, still on top of the division. But we got to play better football.”

Colin Kaepernick workout controversy ‘unfortunate,’ New York Giants co-owner Steve Tisch says

New York Giants co-owner Steve Tisch appeared befuddled over the way Colin Kaepernick’s workout unfolded last month and hoped that the league would provide updates on any future showcases for the quarterback.

“I just felt, you know, what happened in Atlanta was unfortunate. It didn’t seem to be very well organized. And I just, I don’t know how it all sort of fell apart,” Tisch told The Athletic on Tuesday.

COLIN KAEPERNICK WORKOUT WIDE RECEIVER LANDS NFL JOB, CREDITS SHOWCASE FOR HELPING

Kaepernick was set to work out at the Atlanta Falcons’ training facility last month before switching locations last minute over concerns about the waiver the league wanted him to sign. The former San Francisco 49ers star threw for about 40 minutes and was said to still have an “elite arm.”

Tisch was asked if there was going to be a briefing on what happened when the NFL owners meet next week.

“I hope there’s a briefing on that. I think it would be great for full ownership to get a sense of what happened down there,” Tisch said.

NEW YORK GIANTS CO-OWNER STEVE TISCH LAMENTS ‘FRUSTRATING SEASON,’ PONDERS FUTURE OF TEAM

The Giants were not one of the eight teams who moved to an Atlanta-area high school where Kaepernick eventually held his workout. New York appears to be set at quarterback after having selected Daniel Jones with the No. 6 pick of the 2019 draft.

Tisch’s partner, John Mara, said in 2017 that the team received emotional letters from fans who did not want the team to sign Kaepernick over the quarterback’s decision to kneel for the national anthem to protest perceived racial injustices across the U.S.

“All my years being in the league, I never received more emotional mail from people than I did about that issue: ‘If any of your players ever do that, we are never coming to another Giants game,’ he told Monday Morning Quarterback. “It wasn’t one or two letters. It was a lot. It’s an emotional, emotional issue for a lot of people, more so than any other issue I’ve run into.”

Mara also told ESPN radio’s “The Michael Kay Show” later that year he believes Kaepernick would sign with a team eventually.

“I think he still has some good football left in him,” Mara said at the time. “I agree with that. But obviously there are other issues that go along with him. Is he willing to sit as a backup behind a starter? What’s that going to do with your locker room, with your quarterback room, your offensive room? I believe he’ll be back in the league at some point this year with a team.”

Dallas Cowboys have ‘very real interest’ in making Urban Meyer next head coach: report

Urban Meyer raised eyebrows earlier this year when he said he would take the Dallas Cowboys job if it were available. Two months later rumors have begun to swirl about his potential candidacy.

After the Cowboys’ loss to the Chicago Bears on Thursday night, the NFL Network reported there was “very real interest” in Meyer and that team executive Stephen Jones had spoken with him recently.

Jason Garrett’s future with the team has been swirling all season long and with Dallas’ latest skid, the noise about his potential dismissal has gotten louder. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has said Garrett will remain the coach for the remainder of the year but offered a cryptic message earlier this week.

“There is no bar,” he told KRLD radio when asked what it would take for Garrett to get an extension. “When I say that I don’t mean that there’s not a level of– a point where I determine it’s just not working or that I determine that it’s working but there’s many things. There’s boxes to be checked.”

Despite praising Garrett, saying that “he’s got a tremendous list of things that he’s about,” Jones appeared to suggest that he’s been eyeing other coaches as the Cowboys continue to struggle.

“The problem is you don’t know who can guarantee you a Super Bowl. I’ve seen a lot of coaches, I’ve seen their names mentioned but they can’t guarantee me a Super Bowl or guarantee my players the Super Bowl.”

He continued: “There’s no exclusive, nobody’s got the exclusive skills to get the job done so that collectively you can win a Super Bowl but they’re qualified people. Jason Garrett is one of them and in my opinion, Jason Garrett will be coaching in the NFL next year.”

U.S. women’s soccer star Megan Rapinoe called on the top men’s players in the world to help her fight racism and sexism in the sport.

Rapinoe called on Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Zlatan Ibrahimovic in an interview with France Football to help her in the fight to tackle the social issues.

“I want to shout ‘Cristiano, Lionel, Zlatan, help me!'” she said, according to an ESPN translation of the interview. “These big stars do not engage in anything when there are so many problems in men’s football. Do they fear losing everything? They believe that, but it is not true. Who will erase Messi or Ronaldo from world football history for a statement against racism or sexism?”

Rizzo built the team that beat the Houston Astros in seven games to capture the franchise’s first World Series. He was asked on Monday how he’d been celebrating after the victory.

“Mike was our first hire when the Lerner family was awarded ownership of the Nationals in 2006,” Nationals’ principal owner Mark D. College admissions scandal mastermind tried to get other Stanford coaches to bite on potential sports recruits

The college admissions scandal mastermind approached several Stanford University coaches about potential sports recruits over the last 10 years, the school said Tuesday.

Stanford’s former head sailing coach John Vandemoer, who pleaded guilty earlier this year, was the only Cardinal coach who went along with the scheme proposed by Rick Singer, an independent investigation funded by the university revealed.

“Singer directly or indirectly approached seven Stanford coaches about potential recruits between 2009 and 2019,” Stanford University president Mark Tessier-Lavigne said in a statement. He added that there was no evidence anyone but the sailing coach “agreed to support a Singer client in exchange for a financial consideration.”

The names of other coaches contacted by Singer were not revealed. The report also did not detail the communications between Singer and the coaches.

Vandemoer pleaded guilty to charges that he accepted $770,000 in contributions to the program for agreeing to recommend to prospective students for admission. However, the university said neither student was admitted to the school.

Vandemoer coached the Cardinal sailing team from 2009 to 2019. His teams won 29 Pacific Coast Collegiate Sailing Conference spring championships and made it to the semifinals of the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association National Championships each year. He previously coached at the U.S. Naval Academy and St. Mary’s College of Maryland.

He was sentenced to one day in prison over the scandal and was the first person to receive a sentence of any kind. Before receiving his sentence in June, Vandemoer issued an apology.

“The career I worked for 20 years is gone,” he said, according to The Washington Post. “My freedom is in jeopardy … I deserve all this. I caused it. And for that, I am deeply ashamed.”

Singer has since pleaded guilty to racketeering charges. The nationwide scandal has ensnared dozens of wealthy parents, including former “Full House” star Lori Loughlin.
