If their lips are moving, or in this case, if their B roll is rolling.

On Wednesday, the Trump administration released new regulations to supplant the disastrous Flores Agreement, which led to family separation because it did not allow parents and children to stay together after 20 days while their cases are adjudicated. This is common sense and should have been done a long time ago. There is no reason for any child to not be able to stay with their parent while at the same time allowing the legal process to play out in a way that makes sense. Simply releasing everyone was not a solution and only exacerbated the problem as the cartels literally setup child rental services so people could use them to gain access to the interior. Such loopholes also served as a magnet for more to make the dangerous journey.

Given these new regulations will end family separation, you’d think the media would be overjoyed. They’ve spent years at this point decrying the sending of kids to live with relatives while their family’s asylum claims are heard.

But nope. Because everything Trump does must be attacked, even when he’s doing what they originally claimed they wanted (i.e. no family separation), so the media are now saying that keeping families together is even worse…because reasons.

Here’s how CNN dishonestly handled the news per the Daily Caller.

CNN anchor Jim Sciutto told viewers during the 10 am hour that the Flores agreement means families can be held a maximum of 20 days “in the facilities you see here.” The program then cut to a shot of an El Paso, Texas Border Patrol facility featuring migrants behind chain link fences and wearing foil blankets.

The clear implication of the CNN segment was that the family units could now be detained in such Border Patrol facilities beyond 20 days with the new DHS rule.

However, the Flores agreement applies to ICE facilities, not facilities run by Border Patrol.

In fact, family units stay in Border Patrol facilities for a relatively short amount of time — hours or a few days, depending on various factors — before they are either released or transferred to an ICE family residential center.

“Right now families average less than four days from apprehension to release or transfer to ICE. That is a reasonable average at current flow levels and with current operational procedures in place,” a DHS official explained to the Caller.

The residential centers that children and their family members would actually stay in for the duration of their court proceedings look very different than the CNN segment suggested, containing various amenities and programs intended for long-term stays.

In short, CNN announced the new rules but then showed B roll all day of CBP processing facilities instead of the real ICE dormitories these families would actually be staying in. The reason CNN is doing this is to spread the false impression that children are going to be held in cages for weeks on end, something that doesn’t happen.

Here’s the reality. When an illegal immigrant enters the country, they are often entering in remote, inhospitable areas. CBP have to detain them and hold them until they can be vetted and entered into the system. That means a few days in a border processing facility. These locations can not realistically be expected to be comfortable given their locations and the limited resources available. Families of illegal immigrants (or even single illegal immigrants) do not stay in these places for long though. They are quickly moved out to ICE housing, which includes all necessities and many amenities. There is nothing inhumane about keeping families together in these places.

Yet, because our politics are just garbage these days, the media and the left refuse to give credit where credit is due. Instead they mislead, lie, and present false impressions of what’s really going on. For example, the paper of record framed this as the Trump administration depriving illegal immigrants of basic needs because the Flores agreement supposedly guarantees those. This despite the fact that the new regulations actually go beyond the Flores agreement. The dishonesty is just mind-numbing.

The true game here is simple. The only response the left in this country want to the border problem is catch and release. It doesn’t matter that such a policy causes mass chaos on the border and promotes further human trafficking. All that matters is politics and CNN is one of the worst offenders.

Susan B. Glasser in today’s New Yorker (aggregated over on Real Clear Politics) published a hit piece on Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and an allegedly conservative magazine, The American Conservative, decided it needed to pile on. In a long and tortured article entitled “Mike Pompeo, The Secretary Of Trump,” Ms. Glasser while appearing to be balanced and give him credit where due, essentially likens Secretary Pompeo to a boot licking sycophant. Her greatest angst seems to be with the fact that Secretary Pompeo understands the chain-of-command. He knows he is but an advisor and it’s The President who gets to decide things. From Ms. Glasser’s article:

The word “mission” was the tell. Pompeo in public often refers to the “mission set” he’s been assigned by Trump, presenting himself as a mere executor of the President’s commands. “He’s very focussed on whatever the mission is. He’s a West Point guy: Trump wants a deal, so I’ll get a deal,” another of the former officials said. The official noted that Pompeo uses the language of “an Army captain, a guy who went to West Point and got out before he became a general.”

To the “former official,” and Ms. Glasser—Sorry. That IS the language of Commissioned Officers, from Second Lieutenant, all the way up to the Four Star General (or Admiral) asigned as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. You state your case and the “Old Man” decides. Unless it’s an illegal order, you salute, say “Yes Sir,” and execute. And one other thing you don’t do—You don’t “leak” your disappointment at decisions not decided your way.

Ms. Glasser goes on to further demonstrate that she’s spent too much time talking about other folks and not enough time actually being in the arena, emphasis mine.

This behavior is the reason that Pompeo has succeeded in becoming the lone survivor of Trump’s original national-security team. At the start of his Administration, the President had bragged about “my generals.” But, now that he has pushed out the actual generals who served as his chief of staff, his national-security adviser, and his Defense Secretary, it seems clear that Trump was uncomfortable with such leaders, and rejected their habits of command and independent thinking. He wanted a Mike Pompeo, not a Jim Mattis, a captain trained to follow orders, not a general used to giving them.

Again with the non-existent Captain-General dichotomy. Captains give plenty of orders. And for the edification of Ms. Glasser, Mr. Larison, below and others like them, most fights, especially in this particular conflict we are still embroiled in, are led by Sergeants, Lieutenants and Captains. They make the day-to-day, life or death decisions…and far more of them than Flag Officers do.

Daniel Larison over at the The American Conservative, piles on in his article, “Pompeo the Yes-Man.”

It is typical of the shoddiness of Trump’s hiring practices that he picked an unqualified Congressman to run the CIA without even knowing who he was, but the somewhat surprising thing about this episode is that Trump didn’t end up holding Pompeo’s previous criticism against him. Pompeo evidently proved to Trump that he could be just as much of a suck-up as a he was a critic, and that is what he has done. Unfortunately for the country, that has meant having a wholly unqualified man in charge of representing the U.S. to the world because he happens to know how to stroke the president’s ego.

Unqualified? Please! Glasser and Larison are clearly demonstrating the ivory tower mentality so resented by the military and other professions that actually have personal responsibility attached to them. If Ms. Glasser or Mr. Larison had actually served in the military or some other profession requiring the leadership of others, they would know that the only difference between a Captain and a General in command, is the scope of responsibility. Captain level commanders take and give orders, lots of them. Secretary Pompeo served in an Armored Calvary Unit. As a Troop/Company Commander, he would have commanded 100-200 Soldiers (depending on attachments) and been personally responsible for over 100 million dollars worth of equipment while making life & death decisions every day.

I checked the work and education pedigrees of both Ms. Glasser and Mr. Larison. I find it odd that two folks with work experience such as theirs, bereft in actual leadership of others in life or death situations, believe they actually have the chops to denigrate a man with Secretary Pompeo’s real world experience in such matters. I understand the need in our Republic for a robust press. However, J-School grads might wish to consider the below, attributed to Teddy Roosevelt as they opine on issues not really in their wheelhouse.

It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat.”

In short, Mike Pompeo is more qualified to be CIA Chief or Secretary of State than most of the members of Congress. He is far more qualified than Barrack Obama was for the Presidency, who when elected had never, ever at any time prior, held a “buck stops here” job—not one. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is certainly more qualified than these two critics who claim he isn’t.

China may be planning some sort of military surge into Hong Kong if the White House is to be believed. Someone within the Trump Administration made that suggestion to reporters yesterday, according to Bloomberg, without being identified. Whoever commented also suggested they didn’t know why the build-up was happening but vowed the U.S. was paying attention to the protests.

The problem with this suggestion is it appears someone within the administration is either trying to destabilize the situation between China and Hong Kong – which would be awful – or just shooting off their mouth without confirming anything. Reporters from both DPA and Hong Kong Free Press already dismiss the claim on Twitter. The privately-owned Hong Kong news outlets haven’t uttered a peep on this rumor, nor have the Chinese propaganda outlets of ECNS or Xinhua. It’s far from surprising the government-owned outlets are staying quiet since their line of thinking is to make sure the appearance of law and order is maintained. The fact the local, independent groups aren’t reporting it either makes it likely it’s an error from the White House.

There are several concerns.

The first is obvious: Hong Kong is currently in a state of tumult and disorder. The police aren’t helping with video circulating on social media of an officer grabbing a woman who was walking down the street and throwing her to the ground. Someone fired off fireworks at a group demonstrating outside a police station this morning. Officers have also been accused of either working with or ignoring the Triads after protesters were attacked by masked men. South China Morning Post reported the Independent Commission Against Corruption is investigating. That caused a bit of consternation within the department with one officer telling SCMP they’re feeling “dejected and discouraged.” Understandable, given the fact no one wants to be accused of corruption – especially those who are corrupt.

Yet, there doesn’t appear to be an end to the Hong Kong powder keg. People have long been angry due to Beijing’s handling of their takeover of the region from the British just over 20 years ago. One pacifist protest leader observed from his jail cell that the violence would only get worse because people believe the government is ignoring them. The Economist reported aggressive protesters are using the “Reclaim Hong Kong! Revolution of our time,” slogan of Sixtus Leung, a former Legislative Council member who was given six years behind bars last year for hitting a policeman. There’s no reason for the U.S. to poke the dragon even further because Hong Kong citizens are already causing enough of a headache.

The second problem with the White House claim about China is the fact it could backfire. China could (and is) using this suggestion of a military incursion to push harder the theory that the protests aren’t meant to promote actual reform but are being orchestrated by Taiwan and America for further destabilization. Former Hong Kong Executive Tung Chee-hwa claims this and more might follow his lead. Someone sympathetic to the protesters could decide to change his/her mind if the theory they’re just tools of the United States takes root. It might also harden any police or Hong Kong government worker into sticking to their guns (literally and figuratively) instead of throwing them down and joining the protests. Especially since a group of Hong Kong civil servants want to hold their own rally on Friday in hopes of getting the government to respond to the demands of the protesters. There is real opportunity for peace of some sorts in Hong Kong and an end to violence. The U.S. comment might cause it to go sideways.

Let’s also not forget it’s just bad optics for an administration official to get a wild hare and mouth off to the press. It’s irresponsible and akin to the president’s propensity to go off script with odd assertions of dubious quality. The only reason it could possibly make a lick of sense is if the administration thinks a comment or claim might give them negotiating power in this trade summit. It’s certainly not 20D chess, one way or the other.

The protests in Hong Kong are absolutely extraordinary because they are an uprising of independence. A revolt which is self-sustaining, at the moment, and encouraging for anyone who believes in liberalism – the kind which results in truly free markets, not the phony liberalism espoused in American politics. Meddling in Hong Kong would not help since it could turn the protesters who legitimately want their freedom into pawns. The Trump Administration should stay quiet on the issue unless there is something substantive to add.

BREAKING: Trump Makes Major Change to Asylum Rules

The Trump administration has finally moved forward with making major changes to our asylum rules.

This is long overdue.

It makes no sense for any true asylum seeker to to be allowed to country shop on their journey. The point of asylum is protection from immediate danger. It is not to garner the most economically beneficial situation. If someone is truly physically threatened in Guatemala, there is no reason for them to travel almost 2,000 miles, paying off drug cartels and putting their children in mortal danger, to cross the U.S. border illegally.

We simply do not have the amount of facilities, immigration judges, nor welfare to continue to sustain the influx of migrants currently coming. Asylum is not something that should be abused and allowing so many to do so only makes it harder for legitimate claims to be adjudicated. Lax enforcement and asylum abuse only incentivize more to come, which leads to more abuse, more rapes, and more sick and dead children.

The United States is an incredibly charitable nation, but we simply can not absorb the entirety of the world’s poor. This change to asylum laws is common sense and should be allowed to go into effect.

With that said, you’ll be able to count the days on your hands before a liberal judge puts an injunction in place, stopping this rule change. We aren’t governed by elected officials anymore, only the whims of district judges.

Border crossing shut down after Beto’s visit with asylum-seekers

Is it a coincidence that Beto O’Rourke visited with asylum-seekers in Mexico Sunday and by early Monday morning the border crossing he used to go into the country was shut down? Maybe, or maybe not. The border crossing at an international border bridge in El Paso was closed in response to a large mob of protesters in Ciudad Juárez.

Ciudad Juarez is the same city that 2020 presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke visited Sunday to court asylum-seekers. Described as Beto’s first international trip since he declared his candidacy for president, O’Rourke crossed the Bridge of the Americas, a port of entry Sunday to meet with asylum-seekers waiting on the Mexican side of the southern border due to the Remain in Mexico program.

Beto (nee Robert Francis O’Rourke) is desperately seeking publicity for his presidential campaign, which is flailing, at the same time that fellow Texan Julian Castro’s campaign is getting favorable reviews from the liberal media outlets after the first Democrat debate. What better way than to go to a border town and pander to Central Americans trying to cross into the U.S.? O’Rourke first spoke to the asylum-seekers at a restaurant and then he visited a shelter run by the Catholic Church. Actions have consequences, though, and by 2:00 A.M. Monday morning, the border crossing was closed due to about 250 people in Ciudad Juárez chanting “vamos a cruzar” (“We will cross.”) The group was described as “large and unruly.”

The decision to close the bridge came as “a large and unruly group formed on the Mexican side,” according to CBP spokesman Roger Maier.

Local TV station KTSM reported the group was comprised of about 250 Cuban and Salvadoran migrants; Ciudad Juarez newspaper El Diario reported the group was comprised of Cubans and Hondurans.

The Mexican National Guard deployed troops to the area, but they did not engage the protesters, according to El Diario.

CBP closed all lanes of traffic on the Paso del Norte Bridge, and reopened pedestrian lanes at 5:25 a.m., Meier said in an email.

Fortunately, it looks as though Mexico’s leadership stepped up, as they have agreed to do, and the Mexican National Guard successfully calmed the situation down. Note the inclusion of Cubans in the group of Salvadoran migrants. They are all being held on the Mexican side of the border because of enforcement of the Remain in Mexico program put in place by the Trump administration. Beto doesn’t approve of the program and he was on an apology tour along the border, sounding very much like a blame America first candidate. He told the asylum-seekers that the administration’s program is “unlawful”.

He blames those being forced to wait on “the Trump administration’s unlawful ‘Remain in Mexico’ program,” which has allowed the United States to return thousands of Central Americans to Mexican border cities as they wait to hear about their asylum claims. It is meant to reduce the attractiveness of U.S. asylum requests that in the past had allowed claimants to remain in the U.S. for years as their cases wound their way through the courts.

Ponder on that for a minute. A candidate for President of the United States traveled to Mexico to bash an American administration’s program meant to assist in homeland security measures. That truly is a first. The open borders crowd is so invested in their far-left ideology that Beto O’Rourke’s campaign thought this was a good idea. After he crossed back into the United States, he staged a rally outside the U.S. Border Patrol facility in Clint, Texas.

Is it any wonder that the people waiting to come over the border were agitated and “unruly” by early Monday morning? I don’t believe in coincidences and it makes sense to me that this was a direct consequence of Beto O’Rourke’s visit Sunday. Why wouldn’t the people be all torqued up after hearing an American presidential candidate describe the very program keeping them where they are as “unlawful”? Their sense of entitlement to cross the border was only further encouraged by Beto’s inane remarks.

O’Rourke live-streamed his international publicity stunt on Facebook. He indicates that he is using people desperate to come across the border as props, exploiting their stories to push his own agenda. Are we woke yet?

“We hope, by sharing these stories, that the conscience of our country is awoken right now, and the need to change the policies that we have in place” becomes apparent, O’Rourke said via a livestream on his Facebook page.

US Customs and Border Protection spokesman Roger Maier said the Central Americans (and Cubans) “posed a threat to overrun the facility.”

The demonstrators “posed a threat to overrun the facility,” he said, forcing CBP to employ “port hardening measures” and preventing travelers from entering the United States via the Paso del Norte International Bridge.
No arrests were reported on the US side, Maier said.

Authorities began permitting pedestrians to cross a few hours after the shutdown, and by 8 a.m. (10 a.m. ET), they opened four inspection booths and traffic was moving slowly, CBP said.

Photos from the bridge between El Paso and Juarez, Mexico, also known as the Santa Fe Bridge, showed police standing behind barriers and concertina wire. A live cam showed a military-style tactical vehicle blocking a lane of traffic.
The group, between 250 and 300 strong, was composed largely of Cuban and Salvadoran migrants who gathered at the border around midnight, CNN affiliate KTSM reported.

A witness told the station the protesters were chanting, “Vamos a cruzar,” Spanish for, “We are going to cross.” The group dispersed before 6 a.m., KTSM reported.

CBP Air and Marine, other federal agencies and the El Paso Police Department provided support at the crossing, the CBP said.

This bridge, a port of entry, may not seem particularly important but it is the crossing at El Paso, one of the busiest crossings into the U.S. Every day, there is a large volume of both pedestrian and vehicle traffic.

In 2018, almost 12.4 million personal vehicles carrying more than 22.2 million passengers entered the United States via the crossing, according to the US Department of Transportation. Another 7.2 million pedestrians entered the country there. Only the San Ysidro crossing in San Diego boasted more pedestrians and personal vehicles.

O’Rourke is a resident of El Paso. He knew exactly what he was doing – piling on to the frustration felt by the very people he was exploiting for political gain.

The Trump White House has already become infamous for how they handle the press. They’ve stopped the formal press briefings — which had devolved into a cage match where poor Sarah Sanders tried to absorb the slings and arrows — in favor of informal gaggles in the driveway, where officials speak off the cuff and hope for the best.

Now, according to longtime Washington Post columnist Dana Milbank, they’re revoking the passes of people like him who have have enjoyed a “front-row seat to history.”

Without ripping on Milbank too much, as it likely stings to be kicked out of the inner circle, his op-ed on the recent revocation of his “magical ticket” is instructive because, while it’s wrapped in concerns about press access and a tamping down of their ability to hold leadership accountable, it’s mostly about him.

And that, if Milbank and others could honestly analyze things for a second, may be part of the why they find themselves outside the gates.

Take Milbank’s opening paragraphs relaying the news he was no longer seated at the table.

I was in the White House the night Bill Clinton admitted his affair with Monica Lewinsky, and the day he was impeached. I was there on Sept. 11, 2001, and the fearful days thereafter, when we were trained to use escape hoods. I watched George W. Bush make the case for the Iraq War and Barack Obama pitch his remedies for the market crash. There, too, I have witnessed the carnival-like briefings and high histrionics of Donald Trump’s presidency.

But no more. The White House eliminated most briefings and severely restricted access to official events. And this week came the coup de grace: After covering four presidents, I received an email informing me that Trump’s press office had revoked my White House credential.

He sees the revocation of hard passes in favor of passes only for those journalists who are literally in the building almost daily — the hungry ones who show up — as a bit of a slap in the face for someone of his stature who has been in the viewing gallery for all the major events over the last 20 years.

And he believes it’s mostly because he’s a Trump critic.

He might be right. But the tone of his op-ed likely translates into how he approaches his work — by making himself a part of the news — and he might want to consider that the revocation of his and others’ hard press passes may have been informed by that same attitude.

President Trump has decided to designate the Muslim Brotherhood a terrorist group and panties are being bunched as we speak. The latest to urge him to make the move is Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.

The New York Times has the report.

WASHINGTON — The White House is pushing to issue an order that would designate the Muslim Brotherhood a foreign terrorist organization, bringing the weight of American sanctions against a storied and influential Islamist political movement with millions of members across the Middle East, according to officials familiar with the matter.

The White House directed national security and diplomatic officials to find a way to place sanctions on the group after a White House visit on April 9 by President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi of Egypt, for whom the Brotherhood represents a source of political opposition. In a private meeting without reporters and photographers, Mr. el-Sisi urged Mr. Trump to take that step and join Egypt in branding the movement a terrorist organization.

Such a designation imposes wide-ranging economic and travel sanctions on companies and individuals who interact with the targeted group. The president responded affirmatively to Mr. el-Sisi, saying it would make sense. Some of Mr. Trump’s advisers have interpreted that as a commitment, officials said.

According to Press Sec. Sarah Sanders, the internal process to make this happen has already begun.

“The president has consulted with his national security team and leaders in the region who share his concern, and this designation is working its way through the internal process,” Ms. Sanders said.

This move has got many in the media and those from the Obama, pro-Iran school of thought clutching their pearls. Remember, it was the Muslim Brotherhood who formed the basis of the disastrous “Arab Spring,” which the Obama administration helped foment.

Here’s how CNN describes the Muslim Brotherhood in their hand-wringing article on the new designation.

The Brotherhood, a political and social organization that calls for a society based on Islamic law, renounced violence decades ago and affiliated groups in Turkey, Tunisia and Morocco have joined the political process. Most notably, the Brotherhood won Egyptian elections in 2012 after the fall of Hosni Mubarak and ruled the country until President Mohammed Morsi was overthrown in a popular revolt supported by the military.

Renounced violence? Nice of CNN to take their word for it.

Here’s a reminder of some of the things the Muslim Brotherhood do.

The Egyptian Ministry of Interior yesterday said that security forces have managed to arrest 13 members of a new terrorist cell that is affiliated to the Muslim Brotherhood in the city of Alexandria. The members of the cell, which is called “Lijan Al-Irbaak”, confessed to their involvement in carrying out 10 terrorist operations recently.

The Muslim Brotherhood are violent Islamists that try to hide behind a moderate facade. The very basis of their political ideology requires inhumane force from the top down. To suggest they aren’t violent is some hilarious gaslighting. CNN should also probably mention that Morsi was overthrown in Egypt because he was trying to make himself a dictator and had begun to violently attack protestors. That’s typically what happens when you elected Muslim Brotherhood members who want to live under sharia law.

This designation is long past due and I hope Trump gets it done sooner rather than later. He should ignore all the “experts” who will now come out of the woodwork to tell us what a bad idea this is. It’s not. It’s common sense and it will only help strengthen our relationship with our allies in the region.

Although, I’m sure a judge in San Francisco will find a way to put an injunction on Trump’s decision somehow.

That’s not how this works. That’s not how any of this works.

Jerry Nadler is really mad that the White House is repaying his bad faith with bad faith and refusing to cooperate with his meaningless subpoenas. As I wrote yesterday, Trump has already started telling House Democrats to jump in a lake over their investigations and is refusing to produce administration officials for questioning.

In response, Nadler is grumbling behind the scenes and floating some pretty crazy ideas.

At a meeting of House leaders earlier this month, Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler suggested fining officials personally if they deny or ignore subpoenas, according to a person who attended the meeting. Nadler’s idea, the person said, was to put teeth in his party’s numerous investigative queries, many of which Trump officials are stonewalling or simply ignoring.

Nadler even mentioned jailing administration officials as a consequence for contempt of Congress, though he surmised such a plan might be unrealistic, added the person, who requested anonymity to discuss a closed-door session. The person said the idea surprised many in the room but seemed to have been researched as a serious option by Nadler or his staff.

Unrealistic is an understatement.

Congress is not a law enforcement agency. They can not throw people in jail for not going along with their partisan investigations. Nadler suggesting such is just delusion wrapped in a false sense of grandeur. Even the idea of fining people is not going to happen. Who’s going to enforce the fines? Congress can’t.

The only way any of that is possible is if the DOJ gets involved, but they won’t because this is a clear constitutional tug of war between equal branches of government.

When Eric Holder was held in contempt of Congress, nothing happened to him. The same will be true today, although I’m sure the media and Democrats will suddenly gain a great distain for the prosecutorial discretion they once praised under Barack Obama.

On a broader level, imagine the outrage that would be spewed forth if Trump threatened to jail members of Congress for not cooperating with his demands. Imagine the outrage if a Republican Congress did that to a Democrat administration.

Because this is the Trump era though, dictatorial statements by Nadler will be spun in the media as completely acceptable, righteous even.

These kinds of disagreements between government branches are meant to be settled at the ballot box. If Congress doesn’t like that, they are welcome to impeach the President, at which point they’ll have much broader leverage under the law to demand access. Until then, these half-measured faux power plays should be laughed at for what they are.

As Obamacare began to fail and President Donald Trump began to shift health care policy away from the federal government and back toward the free market and state/local control, a group of free-market think tanks and leaders from around the nation began to meet to discuss what they wanted a new health care plan to look like. That effort was put on a fast track when Obamacare was declared unconstitutional by a Texas court last year. With the release of Trump’s 2020 budget, the Health Care Choices Act, the fruit of those discussions among state policy makers, makes an appearance as one option the White House seems to favor to replace Obamacare if it fails to survive its court challenge.

Health care policy expert Doug Badger, who spent time in the George W. Bush White House working with Congress to pass the Medicare Modernization Act, discusses the Act with Sarah Lee, health care policy advisor to The Heartland Institute and RedState front page contributor. Badger also goes into detail how a potential GOP-led plan will eliminate Medicaid expansion entitlements and premium subsidies and redirects them back to states in the form of grants they can then use to tailor their own health care systems for their residents. He also talks about how some of the free-market options are part of that equation such as direct primary care and HSAs, and that patients with pre-existing conditions will be protected under the new plan. The long and the short of it is this: don’t believe them when they tell you Trump doesn’t have a health care plan.

Democrats in the House are moving ahead with numerous investigations following the dud that was the Mueller report. If your expectations were that the Mueller report would simply reiterate things we already know, i.e. early chaos in the administration, lies to the press, tweet rants, etc. then it delivered the goods.

But we all know that’s not what Democrats and the media expected. They spent two years pushing the idea that Trump was a Russian agent and they aren’t going to let go of their dreams that easily.

Their new tool is endless, pointless Congressional inquiries by bad-faith actors like Adam Schiff, Jerry Nadler, and Elijah Cummings.

Cummings in particular has decided to chase the rabbit of the administration giving security clearances to some officials. He began handing out subpoenas, specifically for Carl Kline, who now works for the Dept. of Defense.

Trump’s answer? Go jump in a lake.

A former White House personnel security director has been instructed by the White House not to show up Tuesday for questioning by the House Oversight Committee.

The move appears to be the latest effort by the Trump administration to push back against congressional inquiries targeting the White House, which have proliferated since Democrats took control of the House in January.

White House deputy counsel Michael M. Purpura wrote a letter Monday asking the former security director, Carl Kline, not to show up as the committee had requested. Kline is now working at the Defense Department.

In a letter to Kline’s lawyer obtained by The Washington Post, Purpura wrote that a committee subpoena asking Kline to appear “unconstitutionally encroaches on fundamental executive branch interests.”

This is the right answer.

The administration has clear statutory authority to grant security clearances to whomever they like. If Trump wants to give one to his dog, he can legally do so (ok, maybe not his dog but you get the point). There’s no role for Congress to stick its nose in that process. If they want to change the laws on security clearances, they can do so. That’s their check on the system.

Barack Obama gave security clearances to some officials who the FBI initially recommended against and Democrats didn’t say a word. Why? Because it was understood that it’s the President who’s elected and gets to make that decision, not bureaucrats. In fact, it was Barack Obama who first relaxed the guidelines for security clearances.

The Trump White House has been accused of being too generous in doling out access to the nation’s secrets. But it was Obama officials who altered the guidelines weeks before they left office in early 2017 to provide additional mitigating factors for employees seeking clearances.

The guidelines now allow staffers with dual passports, tax problems and suspicious lie detector test results to receive clearances.

The White House needs to continue to play hardball. If Democrats had shown any effort to operate in good faith on these topics, I’d be more encouraging of cooperation. They’ve blown that long ago and re-blew it in the last few weeks since the Mueller report dropped.

These aren’t serious people and they shouldn’t be treated as such. Every legal method to obstruct their “investigations” should be taken, including claiming executive privilege and laughing at their subpoenas. We learned from Obama’s wingman, former AG Eric Holder, that being held in contempt of Congress is meaningless anyway.

The media will scream, but they’ll do that anyway. Ignoring this subpoena by Cummings’ committee is a good first step in fighting back.
