Gillette’s ad is drawing cheers — and anger

It shouldn’t be a controversial proposition: The best a man can be is kind instead of cruel, generous instead of petty, protective instead of predatory. But already, Gillette is facing backlash for its latest ad, which takes on toxic masculinity, bullying and harassment.

Homeless already returning to camp site the city of Seattle cleared out last week

Westlake Legal Group Northgate-homeless-camp Homeless already returning to camp site the city of Seattle cleared out last week The Blog Seattle homeless

Last week I wrote about a homeless camp in Seattle near the I-5 freeway, just one of the hundreds (the current estimate is 400) in the Seattle area. After two months of complaints from local business owners and residents about threats, trash, and rodents, the city’s Navigation Team came to remove the residents and clean up the mess. Today a columnist for My Northwest reports a new tent is already up at the freshly cleared site:

It hasn’t even been a full week, but a previously-cleared homeless encampment is returning to a north Seattle neighborhood…

The encampment was cleared, but now at least one tent is back up. More are likely to follow. While the Navigation Team has been working hard to clean up the encampments, they quickly reappear.

“It is not uncommon for the team to see the same people living unsheltered at new or returning encampments across the city,” Will Lemke, Navigation Team spokesperson, told the Jason Rantz Show on KTTH. “There are countless factors to why people do not accept shelter or return to an area that was recently cleared. Regardless, the team will continue to remove encampments that pose public health and safety concerns and try everything they can to get people the help they need to get out of homelessness.”

The City of Seattle’s lax enforcement means that most of the homeless know that they can just come back to the exact same spot to camp out — or move just a few blocks away.

The Navigation Team was required by law to offer every person removed from the camp a bed in a local shelter. Only one of the dozen or so people at the Northgate campsite took the city up on that offer. The rest melted away to other illegal campsites where they could continue to drink and use drugs without interference. The city brought trash trucks which cleared away tents, trash, human waste, drug needles, and everything else the residents left behind. A bulldozer was used to scrape the surface of the ground, presumably to remove any hidden needles and to remove human waste that could potentially make someone sick.

The threat from used needles isn’t just a theoretical problem. This weekend a woman in the same area went to the local mall to return some items. On the way out to her car she dropped a few items and reached down to pick them up. From My Northwest:

“I went down to grab my keys and my bag, and I felt something poke my left hand,” Jennifer told KIRO Radio’s Dori Monson. “I picked up my bags and I looked, and there I see a used syringe.”

When Jennifer examined her hand, she found that the syringe had drawn blood. She keeps a first aid kit in her car and was able to clean the wound on site.

Immediately, Jennifer drove to Harborview Medical Center to get tested for blood-borne illnesses such as Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and HIV.

Jennifer (not her real name) will now wait a week to find out if she’s been infected with Hep. C and three months to find out if she’s been infected with HIV. That’s a serious price to pay for the city’s tolerance for low-level crime.

Democrats decline White House meeting on shutdown

The White House sent invitations to a bipartisan group of lawmakers for a meeting aimed at finding a solution to ending the government shutdown — now in its 25th day as the longest in US history — but no Democrats are expected to attend. CNN’s Kaitlan Collins reports.

A South American bloc is forming to counter Venezuela

Westlake Legal Group Maduro-gold A South American bloc is forming to counter Venezuela Venezuela The Blog South America Nicolas Maduro Brazil block

There was a time when Venezuela was one of the major leaders in South American affairs, both in exports and political influence. But the rest of the continent has become increasingly alarmed at the deterioration of the country under the dictatorship of Nicolas Maduro. In past years, the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) was the primary force in establishing South American policy. Hugo Chavez was key to bringing that alliance together, but recently, several countries have curtailed their participation. Now a new group called Prosur is being formed for the express purpose of countering the influence of Maduro. (Reuters)

South American countries are developing a new diplomatic group to replace the Unasur regional bloc that is heavily influenced by increasingly isolated Venezuela, Colombian President Ivan Duque said on Monday.

The Union of South American Nations, or Unasur, was created 10 years ago by late Venezuelan socialist leader Hugo Chavez to counteract the influence of the United States in the region as a wave of leftist leaders held sway over the region’s politics.

But mounting criticism that Chavez’s successor, President Nicolas Maduro, is undermining democracy, as well as a general rightward shift in the region, led Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay and Peru to suspend their participation in the group.

Needless to say, Venezuela will not be invited to join. This action comes on the heels of many of these same nations, along with the United States and Canada, publicly declaring Venezuela’s last elections invalid and describing Maduro’s presidency as illegitimate. Most of them have chosen to recognize opposition leader and National Congress chief Juan Guaido as the only legitimate person to assume the presidency until a new round of free and fair elections can be held.

The steady, international drip, drip, drip of opposition to Maduro’s tyranny is growing into a flood. He’s largely isolated from the developed world with only a few notable exceptions. Unfortunately, two of those exceptions are Russia and China, from whom he’s receiving large amounts of financial and military assistance. Until that changes, or until the country’s citizens and/or military rise up to remove him from power, Maduro will likely continue on with his reign of carnage. Meanwhile, the number of refugees fleeing his country has exceeded three million and that figure is rising every week.

Where does this train of events finally end? I have no idea, but we can be fairly certain that it’s not going to be pretty and the suffering of the Venezuelan people will continue apace.

House rejects white supremacy, white nationalism after Steve King’s comments

Just hours after Republican leadership announced that Republican Rep. Steve King of Iowa wouldn’t be seated on any committees this Congress because of recent racist comments he made, there is growing pressure for the congressman to resign — though Republicans are still far from being united around that idea.

Karen Pence painting a new second lady role

Karen Pence is adding a little color to her life; the second lady returned to the classroom as an art teacher Tuesday.

Pence will teach elementary art two days a week at Immanuel Christian School in northern Virginia, her office announced. She’ll be known as “Mrs. Pence” to her students, not as the second lady of the United States, per her office.

“I am excited to be back in the classroom and doing what I love to do, which is to teach art to elementary students,” Pence said in a statement.

“I have missed teaching art, and it’s great to return to the school where I taught art for 12 years,” she added.

The second lady previously taught at the same school while her husband was serving in Congress, and has spent 25 years as an elementary school teacher overall.

The school where Pence has taken her part-time job has a “parent agreement” posted online that says their policy bans gay students and parents from the school.

“I understand that the school reserves the right, within its sole discretion, to refuse admission to an applicant or to discontinue enrollment of a student if the atmosphere or conduct within a particular home, the activities of a parent or guardian, or the activities of the student are counter to, or are in opposition to, the biblical lifestyle the school teaches,” the agreement states.

‘This includes, but is not limited to contumacious behavior, divisive conduct, and participating in, supporting, or condoning sexual immorality, homosexual activity or bi-sexual activity, promoting such practices, or being unable to support the moral principles of the school. (Lev. 20:13 and Romans 1:27.) I acknowledge the importance of a family culture based on biblical principles and embrace biblical family values such as a healthy marriage between one man and one woman. My role as spiritual mentor to my children will be taken seriously.”

Kara Brooks, Pence’s communication director, said the attention paid to the school’s agreement is “absurd.”

“Mrs. Pence has returned to the school where she previously taught for 12 years. It’s absurd that her decision to teach art to children at a Christian school, and the school’s religious beliefs, are under attack,” Brooks said in a statement to CNN. She did not answer when asked by CNN if Pence agreed with the policy.

Pence is also an artist herself, specializing in watercolors of homes and historical buildings. Her work most recently appeared in her daughter Charlotte’s book, “Marlon Bundo’s Day in the Life of the Vice President.” Two sequels are expected to be published this year.

Pence has also embraced art as her policy platform as second lady; she unveiled her “Art Therapy: Healing with the HeART” platform in 2017, seeking to shine a light on art therapy as a mental health profession through appearances across the US and abroad.
