Report: House Dems weighing contempt charge against Corey Lewandowski over Tuesday’s hearing

Westlake Legal Group l Report: House Dems weighing contempt charge against Corey Lewandowski over Tuesday’s hearing white house The Blog Senate privilege pelosi New Hampshire nadler lewandowski inherent House hearing executive contempt

The beginning of this CNN story reads like a satire of how timid Democrats are about confronting Trump. Quote: “The House Judiciary Committee is preparing to take initial steps to potentially hold former Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski in contempt over his refusal to answer questions at this week’s hearing before the panel, multiple sources tell CNN.”

“Preparing” to take “initial steps” to “potentially” hold him in contempt?

I would have gone with “Dems are preparing to consider possibly deliberating on first steps towards beginning a contempt charge” for maximum ambivalence.

There’s a fun Democratic civil-war subplot hiding behind this news, though.

[I]t is a process that could take weeks: First, a letter is expected to be sent to Lewandowski asking him to answer questions and warning him he can be held in contempt if he doesn’t answer. Then, they may offer a contempt resolution, officially notice a committee vote and then hold a vote in committee before any floor action.

Some Democrats have been irked by the failure to hold Lewandowski in contempt immediately during the hearing, according to Democratic sources. That flies in the face of current House rules that would have made the process quite cumbersome to immediately hold him in contempt at the hearing…

During Tuesday’s hearing, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler accused the White House of orchestrating “an absolute cover-up” by blocking some witnesses from appearing at the public session and trying to restrict Lewandowski’s testimony based on “crony privilege.”

“Crony privilege” is a good term for the idea that a guy like Lewandowski who’s never worked in the executive branch might have a constitutional right not to answer questions from Congress. Being friends with the president doesn’t generate a legal privilege against testifying. I’m frankly surprised there’s not more of a push among lefties to change the contempt rules described in the excerpt, given how eager progressives have been to upend other norms in order to thwart Trump. They’re willing to pack the Court; they’re prepared to nuke the Senate filibuster once they’re back in charge there; it would stand to reason that they’d want to uncuff the majority’s power to charge uncooperative witnesses with contempt given how many Trump associates have refused to answer questions. Maybe the Lewandowski standoff will jumpstart that effort.

Especially since the White House is laughing in Pelosi’s face about how reluctant she is to play hardball with the president and his associates:

Trump and White House officials, meanwhile, are reveling in Democrats’ difficulties. In fact, the president — who watched Lewandowski’s testimony from Air Force One on Tuesday — was laughing and joking about the hearing, arguing that Democrats have no idea what they’re doing and that no one cared about the Mueller report anymore, according to one person who spoke with him…

Two White House officials suggested that the administration could defy congressional requests because House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has made it clear she is reluctant about impeachment. They also have calculated that there won’t be a public price to pay for stonewalling Congress, in part because the clock is running out.

There have been no consequences so far in telling Democrats to get bent when they demand information so that’s what POTUS will continue to do. Pelosi’s strategy of refusing to challenge him, especially via impeachment, in the belief that that makes Democratic victory more likely next fall had better pay off for her sake; if it doesn’t, her political legacy within her party may shift from “first woman Speaker” and “overseer of ObamaCare’s passage” to “weak-willed Trump enabler.” She’s gambling a lot here.

But back to that civil-war subplot I mentioned. Nancy’s getting tired of being criticized as the weak link in the caucus because she keeps holding back on impeachment while other Dems, starting with Jerry Nadler, keep signaling that they’re raring to go. So when Nadler let Lewandowski run roughshod over him this week, she was reportedly eager to point it out to her colleagues:

The Judiciary Committee’s decision to proceed against Lewandowski comes after Pelosi told lawmakers in a private meeting Wednesday night that that no witness should be able to treat members of Congress like Lewandowski did during a Tuesday hearing before the committee, according to three people familiar with the exchange who spoke on the condition of anonymity to speak frankly.

“I would have held him in contempt right then and there,” Pelosi told members.

Pelosi’s spokesman assured WaPo that that wasn’t meant as a dig at Nadler but “several lawmakers” reportedly took it that way. For good reason: A feud has been brewing between the two for months, with Pelosi so pissed off at Nadler and his committee for trying to race ahead on impeachment that she tore into them at a closed-door Dem meeting last week and invited people in the room to leak what she said. She may have enjoyed the spectacle of Lewandowski sneering at Nadler almost as much as Trump did. For once, by letting Corey get away with it, he was the one who looked weak, not her.

Maybe they’ll join hands now on a contempt resolution, as Lewandowski is likely to be an irresistible target. Normally when House Democrats try to haul in a Trump associate to testify, like Don McGahn, they run into various problems — a potentially valid claim of executive privilege, for starters, plus the fact that McGahn is so little-known among average Americans that it’s difficult to turn him into a political villain capable of galvanizing their base. They don’t have either problem with Corey. His privilege claim is dubious and he’s already a villain to the left by dint of his work on Trump’s 2016 campaign and subsequent cronyism. Not only that but he’s probably running for Senate in New Hampshire, where he may very well be more of a liability to the local GOP than an asset. Democrats thus have every reason to elevate him and have this fight with him. All they stand to lose by holding him in contempt is handing him a few weeks of martyr status on Fox News, and in the meantime they’ll make a lot of lefties happy by having punched one of the less likable Trump hangers-on in the face. I’m surprised they didn’t start the contempt process before the hearing, knowing how it was certain to go.

Ilhan Omar Demands Twitter “Deplatform” Trump After Tense Exchange, But There’s Just One Problem

President Trump and Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) engaged in a brief but tense war of words on Twitter earlier today that had the freshman Congresswoman demanding the social media platform take action against him.

Politico reports:

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) today called on Twitter to take action against President Donald Trump’s account and remove a tweet in which he shared a false claim that Omar had “partied” on the anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

“They have a responsibility and they set community standards and clearly the president has shown many-a-times that he has violated their community standards,” she told POLITICO. “I don’t even know why his account is not fully suspended — why he’s not deplatformed.”
[…]
Trump today shared a tweet by conservative actor and comedian Terrence Williams that erroneously claimed Omar was out dancing on the anniversary of 9/11. “IIhan Omar, a member of AOC Plus 3, will win us the Great State of Minnesota. The new face of the Democrat Party!” Trump wrote in a caption.

Williams ended up deleting the original tweet after it was noted that the Omar dancing video was actually from a September 13th event, but Trump’s tweet is still up as of this writing:

Here is how Omar responded:

She also retweeted several tweets from others who called for Twitter to take action, as well as one from 2020 presidential candidate and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) condemning Trump:

Here’s the problem with what Omar is all but telling Twitter to do in response to Trump’s tweet: If Twitter makes it the rule and not the exception to delete tweets and suspend and/or deplatform elected officials for misleading claims, unintentionally erroneous claims, deliberately false claims (lies), and/or any tweet the offending party alleges incited threats of violence, then Omar’s account will need to be suspended or deplatformed, too.

That goes for all members of The Squad, and in fact for most Republicans and Democrats in Congress as well. Because there’s not a single Twitter account out there from a politician that doesn’t contain at least one or more of the types of tweets I mentioned above, including Omar’s.

In fact, Omar has been resistant to deleting tweets she posts that are clearly anti-Semitic and prone to incite threats, and has only done so in certain instances – including deleting one that had been up for seven years.

Not to mention they weren’t deleted due to Republican complaints or because of any genuine feelings of guilt, but instead because of intense pressure from some of her own party members that the tweets were a distraction from their far left agenda.

While I don’t doubt that Omar is on the receiving end of some pretty nasty threats, the same holds true for most other members of the House and Senate. Unfortunately, it comes with the territory. The threats and those behind them should be thoroughly investigated and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law if deemed credible and serious.

But I suspect that the issue with Omar is not just that Trump’s tweet was inaccurate, it’s the fact that she was criticized – period. It’s become Standard Operating Procedure for Squad members to flash the “incitement” card when someone criticizes them – even when the criticism is legitimate. It’s a way for Omar and her Congressional BFFs to try and shut down the debate.

Demanding Trump be suspended or deplatformed for his tweet is just another on a long list of shutuppery tactics utilized by the left, another way to try and silence an outspoken critic.

Even with Twitter’s well-documented left-wing biases in mind, it’s not likely to work. But it won’t stop Omar from trying.

The White House Gun Control Trial Balloon Meets A Swift and Ignominious End

A lot of us have been more than a little uneasy over hints that President Trump may be succumbing to the “do something” impulse in response to recent shootings in El Paso, Dayton, and Odessa-Midland. This is always the worst reason to do anything. There is no conceivable gun regulation, short of mandatory confiscation, that would have prevented any to those shootings. The weakness of the background check and, by inference, red flag laws was demonstrated in Odessa-Midland where the shooter was barred from firearm ownership over mental health issues and was able to purchase one from a criminal. It would seem that the unifying theory of criminal behavior, that is, that criminals commit crimes, was in full force.

Nevertheless, Senate Democrats coming up with three new gun control proposals and Mitch McConnell dumping the decision on how to proceed directly in Trump’s lap gave me the queasy feeling that Trump was about to try to trade away sure base votes for the chimera of pleasing suburban women (we’ve been trying to do that since George H. W. Bush and “soccer moms” and how’s it working out for us?).

That seemed to be about to happen today.

The White House and Department of Justice (DOJ) have met with multiple Republican senators and congressmen to shop legislation on expanding background checks consistent with the Manchin-Toomey bill, sources familiar with the effort told the Daily Caller.

The Daily Caller obtained a copy of an idea sheet circulating among Republican members, which indicates that the legislation in question would expand background checks to include all commercially advertised unlicensed sales.

Here’s the whole thing.

Idea Sheet from WH and DOJ … by The Daily Caller on Scribd

This bill seems to have effectively shut down all private, non-family sales of firearms unless a background check was accomplished…this is the Holy Grail of closing the “gun show loophole” the left has been caterwauling about for years. Despite the language of the underlying Manchin-Toomey bill, this clearly opens the way for a national gun registry and what that will ultimately mean.

When the White House was asked they disavowed that this was the plan

And, for whatever reason, it appears Manchin and Toomey aren’t on board with the White House talking paper

And the NRA is about to go nuts

What we’re looking at, it seems, is a trial balloon that didn’t go over all that well

For right now, this effort seems to be dead. I suspect that once the White House political operation gets a taste of just how negative the reaction among base voters is, that this idea will stay dead. Until the next time when we must DO SOMETHING.

Trump Bulldozes “Dummy” Beto’s Gun Confiscation Plan, Lays Down Some Inconvenient Truths for Democrats

After a growing number of Democrats in recent days have criticized Beto O’Rourke’s gun confiscation plan as unhelpful and unrealistic, President Trump took his turn at the Twitter microphone this morning and delivered some inconvenient truths of his own to the struggling presidential candidate and his party.

Here’s what the President tweeted:

Trump was responding to remarks O’Rourke made at last Thursday’s Democratic presidential debate where he said “Hell yes” in response to ABC News debate moderator David Muir’s question about whether or not he was going to take away people’s guns if elected president:

MUIR: Some of the stage have suggested a voluntary buy-back for guns in this country. You have gone further. You said, quote, “Americans who own AR-15s and AK-47s will have to sell them to the government, all of them. You know that critics call this confiscation. Are you proposing taking away their guns and how would this work?

BETO O’ROURKE: I am, if it’s a weapon that was designed to kill people on a battlefield. If the high impact, high velocity, when it hits your body, shreds everything inside of your body because it was designed to do that so you would bleed to death on a battlefield and not be able to get up and kill one of our soldiers. When we see that being used against children and in Odessa, I met the mother of a 15-year-old girl who was shot by an AR-15 and that mother watched her bleed to death over the course of an hour because so many other people were shot by that AR-15 in Odessa, there weren’t enough ambulances to get to them in time. Hell, yes, we’re going to take your AR-15, your AK-47. We’re not going to allow it to be used against a fellow American anymore.

As of this writing “Dummy Beto” is still trending on Twitter:

The failed Senate candidate replied by doubling down on his call to “buy back” all “assault weapons”, and accusing Trump of “cowardice”:

Beto can say Trump is a “coward” on this issue all day long but it doesn’t change the fact that Trump is right.

What Beto declared at the debate confirms the worst fears of gun rights groups and other 2nd Amendment defenders who have warned for years that Democratic efforts at gun control were part of a “step-by-step process” to eventually take away guns. Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) explained this well on Thursday when asked about universal background checks:

“When you really understand what the endgame of the left is, it’s literally mandatory buybacks or as I call it: confiscation. This is a step-by-step process for them,” Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) told The Hill Thursday when asked about the debate over expanded background checks for firearms sales.

Sen. Chris Coons (D-DE), who has been working with Republican Senators on a compromise bill, said last Friday on CNN that O’Rourke’s statement at the debate “will be played for years at Second Amendment rallies with organizations that try to scare people by saying Democrats are coming for your guns.”

To make matters worse for Democrats, O’Rourke is not the only presidential candidate calling for mandatory gun confiscation. Sens. Kamala Harris (CA) and Cory Booker (NJ), whose campaigns are going nowhere but who have nevertheless both been floated as vice presidential possibilities, have endorsed his plan.

If Beto was a wise man he would have never jumped on board the gun grabbing train and instead offered up some constitutionally sound common sense solutions that most Americans (including his fellow Texans) could get behind. But after the horrific El Paso mass shooting, he has been operating solely on emotion and anger on this issue, which is precisely why he belongs nowhere near the White House.

Because as I’ve written before, no matter how passionate, emotional, and personal an issue may be to a candidate, an unconstitutional plan is still unconstitutional.

President Trump Names Robert O’Brien As His New National Security Advisor

Westlake Legal Group breaking-news-report-620x335 President Trump Names Robert O’Brien As His New National Security Advisor white house War security Robert C. O'Brien President Trump new National Security Advisor National Security Front Page Stories Featured Story donald trump Allow Media Exception

This morning, President Trump announced that he will name Robert C. O’Brien as his new National Security Advisor. This position does not require confirmation by the senate. He wrote:

I am pleased to announce that I will name Robert C. O’Brien, currently serving as the very successful Special Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs at the State Department, as our new National Security Advisor. I have worked long & hard with Robert. He will do a great job!

According to the Washington Post:

Administration officials had viewed him as a safe choice given his strong rapport with colleagues at the State Department and the Pentagon. His “affable demeanor” contrasts with Bolton, who was known as a ruthless bureaucratic infighter, an administration official said last week, requesting anonymity to speak more candidly.

He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California, Los Angeles and his Juris Doctor degree from the University of California, Berkeley, Boalt Hall School of Law. “He was a Rotary Scholar at the University of the Free State in South Africa and he speaks fluent Afrikaans.”

O’Brien is a co-founder of Larson O’Brien LLP.

He has served in the administrations of Presidents George W. Bush and Donald Trump. In November, he was confirmed by the senate as the “US Alternate Representative to the 60th session of the United Nations General Assembly, which met in New York 2005-2006. He addressed the General Assembly on the question of Palestine and represented the United States in the General Assembly’s Sixth Committee, which considered the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism.” Wikipedia reports:

O’Brien served as Co-Chairman of the United States Department of State’s Public-Private Partnership for Justice Reform in Afghanistan, launched in December 2007 by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. O’Brien continues to serve on the Public Private Partnership Executive Committee. On July 31, 2008, President George W. Bush announced his intention to appoint O’Brien to serve in his administration as a member of the Cultural Property Advisory Committee and represent the interests of the general public, for the remainder of a three-year term which expired on April 25, 2011.

In May 2018, Trump appointed O’Brien as Special Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs. In May 2019, “he was given the rank of ambassador one year later.”

O’Brien recently appeared in the news for his role in the A$AP Rocky case in Sweden. The rapper was found guilty of assault but did not face prison time for it.

The first order of business for Mr. O’Brien will be to help President Trump sort out the perilous situation in the middle east in the aftermath of Iran’s alleged attack on a Saudi Arabian oil facility.

CBS News reports:

As national security adviser, O’Brien will be responsible for consolidating sensitive information for the president and presenting him with options. Mr. Trump openly said he had serious disagreements with Bolton, and that’s why he was pushed out of the position last week.

Immediately, O’Brien will be tackling any U.S. response to the Saudi oil strikes. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is scheduled to be in Saudi Arabia the next couple days to assess the situation. O’Brien will also be in the position to give Mr. Trump guidance on what to do in Afghanistan, which was a major point of contention between Mr. Trump and Bolton.

Today the United States of America once again pauses to take a moment to remember the events that reshaped the world on September-11-2001. Hard to believe that it has been 18 years since the purely evil events of that day unfolded. Yet here we are at another anniversary as time marches on.

Most of us will take to facebook and recount “where we were” when the planes struck and what an awful, tragic day that was. We will accompany those posts with memes that say “Never Forget” and then move on to September 12th and live our lives until next year. Which is of course what those who sacrificed their lives and those who were murdered would have wanted for us.

Let me very blunt here though.

We are forgetting and it is showing.

Here are some examples why…

On June 11th 2019 Luis Alvarez went before Congress to talk about the 9-11 victim compensation fund. Alvarez, a retired New York City Police Detective, and 9/11 first responder was there to plead for reauthorization of funds before a House committee.

Here is part of what he said according to Time

A little more than two weeks before his death, Alvarez – who was visibly very ill and thin – traveled to Congress and testified before the House Judiciary subcommittee, urging legislators to extend the fund.

“You made me come down here the day before my 69th round of chemo and I’m going to make sure that you never forget to take care of the 9/11 first responders,” he said. Comedian Jon Stewart testified shortly afterward, chastising Congress for taking years to make the program permanent and condemning the legislators who failed to show up to watch the first responders’ testimony.

At Alvarez’s chemotherapy appointment the following day, medical providers determined that his liver was failing and causing disorientation. Alvarez decided to enter hospice care shortly afterwards.

This hero died 18 days later.

You might have heard about this man and his colleagues going to Congress to ask for this without assistance from someone famous.

You DID hear about it because Jon Stewart had a meltdown, verbally undressing those elected officials for once again dropping the ball of simply keeping a promise. I know some reading this might have thought that Stewart did a bit of an acting job that day, well good for him if he was. He was at least ACTING as he cared on a day that was not Sept-11.

How does a nation that is saying “Never Forget” once a year allow our elected officials to forget those that responded first to these tragedies? They literally saved hundreds if not thousands of lives while giving up their own either on that day or a little bit each moment since, like Detective Alvarez.

“Never Forget” I guess does not apply to the still broken immigration system that this country has 18 years later. This has nothing to do with a wall but how we make sure that those that come here legally, stay here legally.  Five of the 19 hijackers were here illegally when the planes flew into World Trade Center One and Two, The Pentagon and Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

According to National Review

Did you remember that five of the 9/11 hijackers — Mohamed Atta, Marwan al-Shehhi, Hani Hanjour, Nawaf al-Hazmi, and Satam al-Suqami — carried out their killer plot after overstaying their visas, evading detection, and avoiding deportation?

Did you remember the other radical Muslim members of the Terrorist Visa Overstayers Club? They include 1997 New York subway bomber Lafi Khalil; 1993 World Trade Center bombers Mahmud Abouhalima, Mohammed Salameh, and Eyad Ismoil; 1993 New York landmark bombing plot conspirator Fadil Abdelgani; convicted Times Square bomb plotter Faisal Shahzad; and U.S. Capitol bomb plotter Amine El Khalifi, whose visa expired in 1999 and who escaped Homeland Security’s notice for 12 years before he was arrested in 2012 — just blocks from the Capitol building donning what he thought was a suicide-bomb vest.

Maybe we forgot.

How about the war in Afghanistan?

The reasons for going into that war were justified. The Taliban were harboring those that trained and plotted the attacks on America that fateful day. President Bush 43 was able to explain that clearly when the United States military invaded in early October 2001.

Now, 18 years later can anyone explain what the mission is and how we “win” this longest battle America has ever been in?

We have paid a heavy price according to Washington Post

The conflict had left 2,400 U.S. service members dead and more than 20,000 wounded; more than 145,000 people in all, including Afghan military, police and civilians, have died, according to a 2018 report from Brown University’s Costs of War Project; America has spent $737 billion on the war.

This doesn’t include the calculation of dealing with the long term effects of those who served in this conflict and the one in Iraq. They need our support just as much as those who stormed the towers on that clear Sept morning almost two decades ago.

Next year we will have High School seniors graduating in the United States of America that were born AFTER the attacks of 9-11. What that means is that the horrible events of that day will only be a recorded event for them much like Pearl Harbor or the Kennedy assassination was for us. Simply saying “Never Forget” will simply be an empty slogan for them unless those of us who watched those terrible events unfold that day make it mean something to them.

We need to be honest with them about what happened on that day and what has happened since.

We need to teach them that anyone with a badge or uniform is not automatically the enemy but people that deserve our respect.

We need to reinforce that there is evil in the world and ignoring it and hoping it goes away will only encourage it to thrive.

We need to teach them that “Never Forget” is not something we should not only do once a year but consistently throughout the year.  We should teach them this by doing it ourselves and showing by example not just by a Facebook post stating where you were for the 1000th time.

We need to ensure that those who rushed into the buildings and the regular folks who were thrust into horrifying circumstances and sacrificed themselves to save others are never forgotten.

Truly, Never Forgotten!!!!

Todd Beamer who was a passenger on United Flight 93 that crashed into Pennsylvania on this day along with some of the other passengers on his flight decided to storm the cockpit and stop their plane from being used as a weapon. Beamers last words as he was talking to a sky phone operator was “Let’s Roll” and he and others saved many lives while giving up their own.

If we do not fight the apathy that is creeping into the remembrances of what this day means during the other 364 days of the year, this country will turn Beamers last words into “Let’s Not” or “Who Cares” and that means, we will ultimately have forgotten.

So let us ban together to “Never Forget” so that “Never Happens”.

Trump Corrects (and Calms?) the Left: Unlike Obama, He Doesn’t Think He’s President of the World

At a Monday night rally in North Carolina, Donald Trump got in a jab at Barak Obama.

Trump’s comment was mystifying, given his position in the political cosmos: According to many of his critics, he’s a madman plotting — with or without Russia — world domination; at the same time, many on the Left seem to believe it’s his responsibility to take care of the globe. Nationalism, in case you’ve not heard, is now a bad thing.

But Trump knows his boundaries:

“You finally have a president who understands that I’m not supposed to be president of the world; I’m supposed to be President of the United States of America. Obama is more popular in Germany than Trump. He’s got to be. I’m making people pay their bills. The day I’m more popular than him, I’m not doing my job. They like him more in Europe than they like Trump. I think they should.”

Wow.

That is, in my view, a substantial point.

Trump continued, referencing the fact that the Fayetteville event had been moved to the Crown Expo Center in order to keep a bigger-than-expected crowd out of the rain:

“I was even willing to stand out in the rain and get my hair soaking wet but they said it was a little bit out of your district. But I was willing to do it. I would’ve taken it. I would’ve been very proud to have done it. It would have shown it’s my real hair at least. It’s my hair. May not be great, but I will say it’s better than most of my friends’ who are the same age. A lot better.”

Wow again — a bit of self-deprecation. That’s a Trump rarity and — by me, at least — welcome.

The Donald went on with his hint-of-meekness message:

“You must never forget that the 2020 election is about one thing: You.

“It’s true. It’s not about me. It’s about you. It’s about your family, your future, and the fate of your country. … A vote for any Democrat in 2020 and a vote for any Democrat tomorrow in North Carolina is a vote for the rise of radical socialism and the destruction of the American dream. We are entering this campaign with the best record, the best results, the best agenda.”

Socialism sure has caught on among the Left — that and a few other ideas, as the Commander-in-Chief pointed out:

“Democrats are now the party of high taxes, high crime, open borders, late-term abortion, and socialism. They are socialists. The Republican party is the party of the American worker, the American family, and the American dream. … Democrats even want to give free health care to illegal immigrants… And as long as I’m your president, I will never, ever let Democrats take away your health care and give it away free to people that have entered our country illegally. We can’t do that. It’s a tremendous incentive to come in. Democrats also want to bring in unlimited numbers of foreign refugees from overseas, all at the expense of supporting their own communities. Republicans, no matter what you do, where you are, we want people to obey our laws.”

It is perhaps a bit surprising that some currently hoping to lead America don’t appear to be particularly promoting — compared to election cycles of the past — America.

There’s talk of Mexico (hereherehere, and here), people shouldering a greater tax burden (here), fighting white-hooded thunderstorms (here), and — of course — men spreading open their legs and pushing out goo-covered infants (good Lord here).

As for stuff that actually has to do with Americans and their prosperousness, Trump wants people to know he’s got ’em covered:

“We want people that are going to help our country. The Democratic Party has never been farther outside of the mainstream.”

Sure seems that way. But I’d believe it a little more coming from the President of the World. Drats.

If you’d like to watch the rally, I’ve included it in its entirety above.

President Trump Fires National Security Advisor John Bolton; Plus A Little Something Extra From Max Boot

Westlake Legal Group John-Bolton-620x325 President Trump Fires National Security Advisor John Bolton; Plus A Little Something Extra From Max Boot white house President Trump National Security Adviser John Bolton National Security Front Page Stories Featured Story donald trump Allow Media Exception

President Trump announced this morning that he had asked for (and received) National Security Advisor John Bolton’s resignation. He indicated in a tweet that he “strongly disagreed with many of Bolton’s suggestions” and that other administration officials did as well. He also said he would name Bolton’s replacement next week.

In a brief letter dated September 10, 2019, Bolton wrote: “Dear Mr, President: I hereby resign, effective immediately, as Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs. Thank you for having afforded me this opportunity to serve our country.”

Bolton, well known for his hawkish positions on foreign policy issues, often found himself at odds with the more dovish Trump. Bolton appeared an unlikely choice from the start.

One positive aspect of the Trump/Bolton dynamic was its ability to keep enemies off balance. Knowing Trump erred on the side of dovishness and Bolton, hawkishness, countries like Iran or North Korea would be left guessing what action to expect.

However, the negative aspects far outweighed the positive.

The recent tension between the two began when the problems with Iran began to escalate in May. After Trump canceled a US airstrike on Iran in June at the last minute,  he told a member of his inner circle, “These people want to push us into a war, and it’s so disgusting. We don’t need any more wars.”

Hot Air reported:

A few weeks later, Bolton was conspicuously absent from Trump’s big photo op with Kim Jong Un at the DMZ, having been tasked with a visit to Mongolia at the time instead.

The most hardcore Republican Bolton critic in Congress, Rand Paul, was deputized by Trump in July to try to broker negotiations with Iran. (Paul is already celebrating Bolton’s termination on Twitter today.) More recently reports being bubbling up that Bolton had been sidelined from the peace process in Afghanistan and was being excluded from meetings. Rumors began circulating that his relationship with Mike Pompeo, a Trump favorite, had collapsed, with natsec deputies unsure who was actually steering the diplomatic ship between the more negotiation-minded Pompeo and the more hardline Bolton.

It’s been reported that Bolton was strongly opposed to Trump’s invitation to the Taliban for talks at Camp David last weekend. Trump may believe that Bolton leaked this information to the media.

A White House official told Fox News, “Simply put, many of Bolton’s policy priorities did not align with POTUS.”

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) spoke to Fox News’ Neil Cavuto today and said, “The threat of war around the world is greatly diminished with Bolton out of the White House.”

Anyway, the unlikely alliance is over. And Trump will name his fourth National Security Advisor next week.

Bolton has served in the administrations of former Presidents Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush and served as a Bush’s lawyer during the 2000 Florida recount. Bolton also served as a U.S. permanent representative to the United Nations from 2005 to 2006, and as an undersecretary of state for arms control and international security from 2001 to 2005.”

Max Boot, the Washington Post reporter I posted about yesterday (here) who can’t understand why Trump is still in office despite all of his columns and soundbites, weighed in on Bolton’s departure. He can’t seem to make up his mind or he wants to have it both ways.

Boot’s tweet: “John Bolton was bad. His departure might be worse.”

And Seth Mandel, the executive editor of the Washington Examiner, replies:

“The Only Thing Worse Than Bolton Is No Bolton, And The Only Thing Worse Than No Bolton Is Bolton”
