Federal judge guts Florida law requiring felons to pay fines before they can vote
Aside from the US Constitution, the Florida Constitution addresses a different but equally important angle.
All ballot initiatives are required to use ‘plain and common language.’ No legalese or weasel words anymore.
So, the way I recall this being worded was something like:
Vote yes: Felons will regain the right to vote on completion of their incarceration.
Vote no: Felons will not regain their right to vote …
Nowhere in the initiative was any mention of fines or restitution. That, alone, makes this an illegal attempt to distort the will of the voters. I believe that had already been addressed at the state Supreme Court. So this is their final, last gasp attempt to find some other avenue to limit voting ability of primarily poor minorities.
