Little Girl Busts Justin Trudeau With Awkward Question: ‘Why Did You Paint Your Face Brown?’

Liberal Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has been making the rounds of media events, trying to make amends, since he became embroiled in a blackface scandal, prior to the election for PM on October 21.

One stop was on the Facebook Watch show, “New Mom, Who Dis?.”

But when the interviewer gave one of the little girls the opportunity to ask him a question, she did. The little girl asked, “Why did you paint your face brown?”

“Ooh! Um, it was something I shouldn’t have done because it hurt people,” Trudeau replied. “Um, it’s not something that you should do and that is something that I learnt. I didn’t know it back then but I know it now, and I’m sorry that I hurt people.”

Noticeably, he failed to answer the “why” part of her question. Nor did he explain why he didn’t know that as a 29 year old man or why he had repeated incidents of blackface including one with his pants apparently stuffed.

The little girl had a follow-up. “But did you paint your nose and your hands brown?”

“Mmm, hmm, yeah,” Trudeau responded affirmatively. “And it was the wrong thing to do.”

Trudeau then gave a lecture.

From Fox News:

“And I had a good conversation with my kids around taking responsibility for my mistakes and making sure that we’re always sticking up for each other and not teasing each other and being respectful towards each other.

“And I’m sorry that I hurt you as well. I’m sorry that I hurt kids who … face teasing and discrimination because of the color of their skin. That’s just not right in this country or anywhere around the world. We all have to work together to make sure that that doesn’t happen.”

As The Post Millennial explained, the show is a pre-taped, written and rehearsed show, which means that the question was likely staged for him to use as another way to explain himself.

But even considering that, the explanation was awkward and fell flat. And lecturing others for something he says he did wrong is just a bit precious.

Lindsey Graham Got Prank Called and Inadvertently Admitted Some Hard Truths About the Turkish-Kurdish Situation

You wouldn’t think a Senator would fall for a prank phone call and completely undercut his public pronouncements in the process, but it’s 2019 and all that.

We are the midst of an extremely tense situation in Northern Syria, where the United States pulled about 50 advisors out of the area in the face of a Turkish incursion across the border. Nuance on the topic has become off limits for most on the right. My sympathies generally lie with the Kurds, even the YPG more so than Turkey, but this is not nearly as easy as just “supporting our allies,” as we’ll discuss in a moment.

First though, let’s lay out what happened with Graham. The same Russian pranksters who convinced Rep. Adam Schiff they had naked pictures of Donald Trump managed to pull one over on the South Carolina Senator. This comes courtesy of Fusion mouthpiece Natasha Bertrand.

First, let’s notice something. It’s likely that the only reason Bertrand has this “scoop,” which could only be passed along by Russian sources, is because Fusion GPS has been feeding her Russian misinformation for years. This was likely done to Graham to embarrass him and the Russians have plenty of reasons to want to do that. Even though that’s not the meat of this story, it is interesting to note just how much of a direct line the Russians have to Fusion GPS and their chosen reporters (Bertrand and Dilanian being the most prominent).

Now, back to the details. Graham has been raging on Twitter and publicly the past few days about Trump pulling out of Northern Syria. He’s proclaimed the evils of it and the coming re-rise of ISIS. He’s said we are leaving the Kurds to die. Yet, on this call, he took a decidedly different tone.

Namely, he admitted that it’s complicated. Very, very complicated.

But Graham also expressed sympathy for Turkey’s “Kurdish problem” and described the Kurds as a “threat.” Those private comments appear to contradict his public statements this week, in which he criticized Trump’s decision to pull U.S. troops out of northern Syria because it’s “wrong to abandon the Kurds, who have been strong allies against” the Islamic State.

“Your YPG Kurdish problem is a big problem,” Graham told the pranksters. He was referring to the Kurdish People’s Protection Units, a group that began fighting ISIS as part of the Syrian Democratic Forces in 2015—with support from the U.S.—but is considered a terrorist group by Turkey because of its push to establish an autonomous state for the Kurds on the Turkish-Syrian border.

“I told President Trump that Obama made a huge mistake in relying on the YPG Kurds,” Graham continued. “Everything I worried about has come true, and now we have to make sure Turkey is protected from this threat in Syria. I’m sympathetic to the YPG problem, and so is the president, quite frankly.”

That’s a direct contradiction of Graham’s public condemnations, and one that admits some hard realities on the ground.

Let me say this first though. I’ve refrained from writing about the situation in Syria to this point for a very specific reason. There’s way, way too much emotionalism being bandied about right now to have an intelligent conversation with most people on the right. If you even begin to inject that the Kurds are not a monolithic group, that they actually include different factions, and that the regional conflicts that predate the Syrian civil war make this a very tenuous situation, you get accused of endorsing “genocide” and “slaughter.”

In reality, there is no evidence of those things happening. Turkey agreed to a safe zone last year encompassing parts of the Syrian border. At this point, that’s what they’ve begun to form by pushing across. Could they cross a red line and start wiping out the Kurdish groups in Northern Syria? I certainly wouldn’t put it past Erdogan. He’s a terrible person. But not taking all factors into account helps no one.

Take this from Meghan McCain for example.

While Rand Paul’s tweet is stupidly simplistic, McCain’s response is know-nothing gobbledygook.

What does McCain know about the YPG or PKK? Does she know they are designated terrorist entities that have been at war with Turkey for decades? Does she know they are allies in a separatist movement within Turkey and have carried out suicide attacks? Does she realize that engaging a NATO ally in order to protect them would set off a massive international crisis and possibly destroy the most important alliance in history? Does she care that we have 5,000 troops inside Turkey and over 60 nuclear warheads at risk? Does McCain think we should leave 50 troops as human shields in the face of a Turkish operation that was moving forward regardless? Turkey doesn’t even have to mean to kill Americans for Americans to die in that situation. It’d have been incredibly dangerous for those soldiers.

McCain hasn’t spent one second in her several rants on the issue actually articulating the complexities and pitfalls of the situation in order to actually form a salient argument. Instead she’s spent her timing spouting righteous platitudes that ignore the realities we are dealing with.

In Graham’s prank phone call, we actually see him admit the issues at hand. The YPG are a real problem and Turkey does have legitimate reasons to push back on them. The group’s goal is to form a Marxist state made up of Turkish and Syrian land. As you can imagine, that raises the temperature in the area among all involved. Further, it must be said that the Kurds in Iraq are not the same as those in Northern Syria. The former are our traditional allies, the latter are not. Iraqi Kurds see the YPG as extremists (and objectively, they are).

The United States, due to the failures of the past administration, has been put in an impossible situation. Graham appears to know this but hasn’t had the guts to say it publicly. He simply got caught with this prank call.

With Turkey saying they were coming across the border, there were no good options here. The fact that we are dealing with the YPG makes the matter extremely difficult navigate. We were placed in the middle of two historically warring groups. One is a NATO ally and is vitally strategic for our national security. The other did help us defeat ISIS in Northern Syria. This all paints a dangerous shade of gray and the President made the decision to not continue to play chicken with Turkey. Even if you think it’s the wrong move, the certainty with which some have been shouting crosses into the ridiculous.

With all that said, what Turkey doesn’t have is a legitimate reason to do is wipe out the Kurds. Setting up a border zone is one thing, specifically targeting civilians is another. If that happens, the President will be forced to act and he has said he will. If he doesn’t, he will bear the consequences of that, as he should. The best course of action here is to negotiate some kind of settlement. That will mean Turkish compliance but it will also mean a stop to the actions of the YPG within Turkey.

What doesn’t help anyone in this discussion is generalized hysteria without any admission of just how incredibly volatile and complicated this situation is.

Activision Blizzard is an American company out of California.

But you might be forgiven for not having thought that after their actions of the past week. In response to a gamer at their Hearthstone tournament making a statement supporting Hong Kong, the company not only suspended the gamer, Chung Ng Wai, for a whole year, they removed his $10,000 prize money as well and fired the two casters who were interviewing him and filmed his comments.

Gamers saw this as kowtowing to the Chinese with whom Blizzard has an intertwined business relationship. They viewed it as an attempt to intimidate not only gamers but the messengers who dare report on free speech as well.

But instead of intimidating, the event galvanized people. It caused a “blizzard” of anger against the company, particularly from people closest to the company who felt not only wasn’t it in keeping with American values but it was not in keeping with the company’s values as well.

Mark Kern, the man who led the team who developed World of Warcraft, cancelled his WoW subscription and called for a boycott.

From NY Times:

In an interview, Mr. Kern said China was a major source of revenue for the gaming industry, and he knew he was “closing many doors” careerwise by speaking out on Twitter.

But Mr. Kern, who lived in Hong Kong as a teenager, said the company’s actions were “a deterioration of Blizzard values that really broke my heart.”

“It’s one thing to stay out of politics in games, quite another to take harsh, punitive actions designed to appease a government whose values are against what Blizzard has traditionally stood for,” he said.

Kern wasn’t the only one taking action.

From The Verge:

A couple dozen Blizzard employees walked out of work Tuesday in protest of the company’s decision to ban a professional Hearthstone player who voiced support for the Hong Kong protesters over the weekend, according to The Daily Beast.

The employees met at a giant statue depicting an Orc Warrior outside of the Activision Blizzard offices in California. According to the Beast, employees came and went as the day continued on and topped off at around 30 concurrent workers. Someone claiming to be a Blizzard employee posted a photo of workers sitting beside the statue on the r/Hearthstone subreddit, where it was met with praise from members of the Reddit community.

The photo shows them with umbrellas, a sign of the Hong Kong protests. That enough may have put their jobs at risk.

But that’s not all they allegedly did.

At the bottom of the Orc statue there’re plaques that say “Think Globally” and “Every Voice Matters,” an important principle that the company used to believe in.

The employees covered both over, taping paper over them.

Dear CNN: Questioning Elizabeth Warren’s Pregnancy Discrimination Story Is Not ‘Another Example of Sexism’

Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., speaks about her two-cent tax plan during a campaign event, Monday, Sept. 2, 2019, in Hampton Falls, N.H. (AP Photo/Elise Amendola)

It’s a day that ends in “y” so that means some woke national mainstream media news outlet is blaming legitimate criticism of female public figures on sexism or something yet again.

On Wednesday, Streiff wrote about how liberal journalists and even some conservatives were insinuating that questioning Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s pregnancy discrimination story should be off limits because you didn’t have to go out on a limb to see how something like that could have happened in the 1970s.

Unfortunately, the attempts at shutting down criticism of Warren for the big inconsistencies in her story weren’t just limited to people who said in so many words that it used to be such a common occurrence you shouldn’t question it.

CNN culture/identity/politics analyst Brandon Tensley wrote a piece about how the debate over Warren’s claims was “another example of sexism in the guise of scrutiny.” Here’s what else he wrote:

But over the past few days, conservative news sites and mainstream outlets either have sought to directly refute Warren’s account or have disputed it in such a way that it seems as if there’s some reason to doubt that a school in the early 1970s would fire a pregnant woman. But that kind of discrimination continues today. (As The New York Times documented earlier this year, American companies still “systematically sideline” pregnant women by, for instance, passing them over for promotions.)

Streiff astutely pointed out in his piece regarding similar criticisms from other sources that “just because ‘some people did something’ … doesn’t mean it has happened to every woman who was pregnant. It certainly doesn’t mean that it is off limits to call Warren out on her lies when her own words and the documentary evidence says that is the case.’ So that base has been pretty well covered here at Red State.

But it’s what came next in Tensley’s write-up that had eyes rolling:

Warren’s story, however, fits into a much larger pattern, one that will indeed be familiar to many women: It’s the tradition of sexism in the guise of scrutiny.

Oh really?

After citing a couple more supposed examples, including one about Sen. Kamala Harris being pulled by the accuser’s attorney into a California case that involves allegations of a sexual assault made against a higher-up who works at Harris’ husband’s law firm, Tensley came to this conclusion:

Each of these examples is, in its own way, a distillation of age-old policing mechanisms and double standards. Each also shines a light on the inveterate sexism — women as unreliable narrators, women as answerable for their husbands’ professional lives, women as weak — that still, today, takes up so much space in the narrative.

Or to use Warren’s own words, “I don’t know what else you’d call it.”

This is such a load of bull that it almost defies logic.

Let’s get the Harris thing out of the way first: The attorney in the sexual assault case who pulled Harris into the mix is a female attorney. How on earth is a female attorney using Harris’s star pull in a case involving an alleged sexual assault on another woman “sexism”? She’s not being pulled into the case to answer for her husband. She’s being pulled into it because of the power factor. That doesn’t necessarily make the move a good one, but it doesn’t = “sexism.”

As far as the Warren criticism goes, someone needs to alert Tensley that by the left’s own rules, your ENTIRE past history is fair game for the political opposition. That includes things you allegedly did or did not do 30, 40, 50, 60 years ago. Just ask Joe Biden, who got smacked around by Harris over what he said about working with segregationist Senators in the 1970s. Just ask Brett Kavanuagh, whose nomination was almost derailed over false allegations of sexual misconduct and assault that dated back to the early 80s. Just ask Mitt Romney, who was raked over the coals for a story involving a hair-cutting incident that happened when he was in high school.

New Yorkers, Get Ready for Congresswoman Chelsea Clinton

On Thursday, Rep. Nita Lowey (D-NY), who is 82, announced her retirement. In a statement, she said:

After 31 years in the United States Congress, representing the people of Westchester, Rockland, Queens and the Bronx, I have decided not to seek re-election in 2020.

It is my deep honor and privilege to serve my community and my country, and I will always be grateful to the people who have entrusted me to represent them. I am proud of the help my office has provided to thousands of constituents on matters ranging from health insurance and veterans’ benefits to Social Security and student loans.

Take heart, New Yorkers. Though Chelsea Clinton actually lives in Manhattan, the New York Post reported last fall that her loving parents had the foresight to purchase the house next door to theirs in Chappaqua for Chelsea and her family. All Chelsea has to do is to declare that house as her legal residence, and presto, she’s qualified to represent the district in Congress. Kind of like how her mother bought a house in the state so she could run for the Senate in 2000.

In November, the Post reported that Chelsea was considering a run for public office. The Clintons have apparently been waiting for this very opportunity. Though I’m sure Chelsea would have preferred to make her political debut in the Senate, opportunity has knocked and she will likely answer.

I wonder if Lowey was truly ready to retire or if she needed a little persuading. You know how good the Clintons are at that kind of thing.

If Chelsea serves a term or two in the House, then a term in the Senate, she could be ready for the presidency by 2028 or certainly by 2032. Oh, what fun!

Biden Campaign Has a Hissy Fit as Even the Left Wing Media (Except CNN) Can No Longer Ignore the Corruption

In a way you have to feel sorry for Joe Biden. In best Politburo fashion, which is the only way the Democrat Party works, he has served in the fields and worked his way to the top of the hierarchy. Like a good soldier, he accepted his orders and stood aside in 2016, despite being a much stronger candidate, for the “historic” candidacy of a corrupt, unlikable and unaccomplished (unless we want to call being married to Bill Clinton an accomplishment) tour director for Fort Marcy Park (just joking, you leftwing goobers, lighten up), Hillary Clinton.

Now, in this last chance to grasp the brass ring of the presidency, QuidProJoe finds himself enveloped in a miasma of outright corruption and very corrupt looking activities which also largely involve his coke-snorting, philandering son, Hunter Biden. Ordinarily, we can expect the leftwing media to run interference for Democrat candidates on just about everything, see, for instance, how the media covered manifest and blatant corruption that characterized the Clinton Foundation. So one can excuse Biden for being butthurt when the New York Times ran this op-ed yesterday: What Hunter Biden Did Was Legal — And That’s the Problem

In December 2013, Joe and Hunter Biden flew aboard Air Force Two to China; less than two weeks after the trip, Hunter’s firm, Rosemont Seneca Partners, which he founded with two other businessmen in June 2013, finalized a deal to open a fund, BHR Partners, whose largest shareholder is the government-run Bank of China, even though he had scant background in private equity. (Representatives of the fund claim that the timing of the deal and the Bidens’ trip to China was coincidental.) Thus far, the firm has invested about $2.1 billion, according to its website.

In trying to disprove a link between the father’s powerful position and the son’s surprising success, Hunter Biden’s lawyers claim he did not take an equity stake in BHR Partners until after Joe Biden left office. Hunter, whose company, according to its financial records, held an equity stake in the fund, took a board seat when it was founded, in December 2013. At the same time, his business partner, Devon Archer, was vice chairman.

With the Russian invasion of Crimea in 2014, Joe Biden became point person in Ukraine as well. That same year, Hunter Biden landed a board position with the Ukrainian energy giant Burisma Holdings. Despite having no background in energy or Ukraine, the vice president’s son was paid as much as $50,000 a month, according to financial records. (He left the board in early 2019.)

To say the Biden campaign went batsh** crazy is to indulge in massive understatement.

Tater appears to have had an orgasm reading it:

Biden campaign blasts NYT in letter to Dean Baquet

In a Wednesday evening letter addressed to Dean Baquet, the Biden campaign excoriated The New York Times for its recent coverage of Joe Biden, his son Hunter Biden, and Ukraine. The letter was written by deputy campaign manager and comms director Kate Bedingfield. She expressed extreme displeasure with how The Times has covered the debunked notion Biden abused his office to benefit his son.

Bedingfield wrote that The Times, which published a widely panned story in May by reporter Ken Vogel and then-freelancer Iuliia Mendel, “had an outsized hand in the spread” of the “baseless conspiracy theory.”

In Bedingfield’s words, “What was especially troubling about the Times’s active participation in this smear campaign is that prior to its reporting on the subject by Ken Vogel, this conspiracy had been relegated to the likes of Breitbart, Russian propaganda, and another conspiracy theorist, regular Hannity guest John Solomon.”

Quick glossary:

  • “widely panned” means truthful but didn’t fit the Democrat narrative.
  • “debunked” means they can’t answer the charges so all they can do is claim they don’t exist.
  • “conspiracy theorist” is anyone who doesn’t agree with the Democrat narrative…like the people who claimed from the beginning that the Russia Hoax was…well…a hoax.

Biden is pulling the old coaching ploy of screaming at the ref on this play in hopes that he will get a better call on the next one. It won’t work. The corruption of Joe Biden’s influence peddling to assist and protect his son is simply too blatant and too easy to understand. More is going to trickle out and the New York Times will either have to take the lead in breaking those stories or begrudgingly following other outlets as they do. But the story is going to come out. The second reason that it won’t work is that when you have a newspaper that will hire a member of its editorial board who boasted about she hates men and white people, you should be bright enough to figure out that a septuagenarian, melanin-challenged, penis-possessing (making an assumption here, I have no personal or second hand knowledge that this is the case) candidate like Biden is not going to get treated all that well. The New York Times’s reporting staff is firmly in the bag for Elizabeth Warren and any story that hurts Biden helps her.

James Comey Was Spying On Loretta Lynch

Attorney General Loretta Lynch listens at left as FBI Director James Comey speaks during a news conference at the Justice Department in Washington, Thursday, March 24, 2016. Seven hackers tied to the Iranian government were charged Thursday in a series of punishing cyberattacks on a small dam outside New York City and on dozens of banks _ intrusions that reached into American infrastructure and disrupted the financial system, U.S. law enforcement officials said. (AP Photo/Jacquelyn Martin)

James Comey really had a thing for spying on people I guess. But don’t call it spying. Call it “human surveillance” so as not to offend the sensibilities of the media.

A new report has come out, based on a coming book by Pulitzer winning journalist James B. Stewart, in which it is revealed that former FBI Dir. Comey had a high level informant placed inside then Attorney General Loretta Lynch’s office.

This via The New York Post.

Lynch had made major career advances in the 1990s under President Bill Clinton — and her boss, President Barack Obama, plainly supported Hillary’s candidacy. Plus, Obama was also implicated in the scandal, since he’d exchanged multiple emails with Clinton at her non-government address — a fact they were all keeping from the public.

Stewart reports that Comey’s “highly placed informant” indicated that Lynch wouldn’t let the FBI investigation add to Clinton’s woes. An email reportedly from the head of the Democratic National Committee assured a civilian that “Lynch wouldn’t let the Clinton investigation get very far, suggesting that Lynch would protect Clinton,” Stewart writes.

There are two parts to this. One, the fact that Comey was running an informant against his own boss (the DOJ oversees the FBI) is pretty shocking. This guy apparently just had no boundaries at all. It’s like he was trying to be a the modern day J. Edgar Hoover but without the secret sex life.

The other, perhaps more newsworthy aspect of this is that Lynch was sandbagging the investigation to help Clinton. That’s been long suspected and multiple pieces of evidence have come out over the years pointing that direction. This may be the most direct accusation yet and it matches up exactly with what transpired. While Lynch claimed she was sitting on the sidelines, essentially recused without being recused, she knew the decision to not go after Hillary had already been passed down by her own DOJ. The game was rigged even while she was smiling for the cameras and claiming she’d do whatever the FBI wanted.

At this point, all these revelations are more intriguing that actionable. It’s not illegal for Comey to do what he did and Lynch is certainly not a sympathetic character herself. WHat it does show is just how underhanded these people were. Power was simply something to be abused and politics played a central role in many things they did.

With all the rancor in Washington, it’s nice to see issues where Democrats and Republicans seem to be able to come together and take a unified stand.

Both the left and the right came together to rip the NBA for pandering to China and stopping speech of Americans critical of China and/or supportive of Hong Kong protesters.

According to a draft of their letter obtained by CNN, the bipartisan group which included Reps. Tom Malinowksi, Mike Gallagher, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Jim Banks, and Sens. Ben Sasse, Ron Wyden, Tom Cotton, and Ted Cruz blasted the NBA.

“It is outrageous that the Chinese Communist Party is using its economic power to suppress the speech of Americans inside the United States,” they said. “It is also outrageous that the NBA has caved to Chinese government demands for contrition.”

They noted such concession would only inspire China to further intimidate free speech.

The members continued, saying the NBA “should have anticipated the challenges of doing business in a country run by a repressive single party government—including by being prepared to stand in strong defense of the freedom of expression of its employees, players, and affiliates across the globe.”

The letter observed that the NBA is not silent when it came to speaking out on American “social justice” issues, noting “it is easy to defend freedom of speech when it costs you nothing, equivocating when profits are at stake is a betrayal of fundamental American values.

The members also pointed out, “You have more power to take a stand than most of the Chinese government’s targets” and they should stand for freedom because it’s those very rights that have afforded them their success.

They also set forth a list of things they’d like to see from the NBA.

But the NBA is already having more trouble. As Twitchy noted, more fans were tossed out at a Wizards game last night with the Guangzhou Loong-Lions after the fans chanted slogans, held up signs “Shame on the NBA,” “Free Speech is a universal value,” and “South Park was right,” and wore shirts reading “Free Hong Kong.”

Security confiscated a “Free Hong Kong” sign from protesters sporting the t-shirts as the national anthem was being played.

Jon Schweppe, @JonSchweppe, who is with the American Principles Project, was part of the group and took the videos.

The protesters also had a sign “Google Uyghurs” confiscated.

The Uyghurs are a group of Chinese Muslims who have been greatly persecuted by the Chinese government and locked up in concentration camps.

Fans were ejected for similar actions the night before at a Philadelphia 76ers game with the same Chinese team.

More such actions are being planned by fans.

The NBA needs to take the hint from Congress or they may find a more important market rejecting them than that of China, in addition to throwing American values under the bus.

Joe Cunningham: Yes, We Identify With “Joker” and He Could Inspire More Villain Movies

The weekend success of the Todd Phillips movie Joker has Warner Bros. and Hollywood thinking that more movies based on villains could be the way to go. In fact, it might just be the thing that saves Warner Bros. and DC’s otherwise disastrous run on comic book movies.

Other than the success of Wonder Woman and (to a much lesser extent) Aquaman, DC’s comic book movie universe just hasn’t been stellar. Joker proved that there is still cinematic interest in their properties, but a shared universe in the style of Marvel’s might not be the path for them.

Along with Phillips’ own talk of a possible sequel to the story of Arthur Fleck and his transformation into The Joker, a report popped up on Wednesday suggesting that a movie about another Batman villain, Two-Face, is being considered.

Two-Face has been on the big screen twice already – once by Tommy Lee Jones in Batman Forever and once by Aaron Eckhart in The Dark Knight – so it wouldn’t be an entirely new premise to see him in a movie. However, Two-Face and Batman are so woven together that any movie centered on him as the main character wouldn’t be as Batman-free as Joker was (and even then, a not-so-small part of Joker very much had to involve Batman in the form of young Bruce Wayne).

It would be possible, mind you, but you’d need to invent a reason for Batman to not be there, and you’d also have to make sure you’re not writing another Catwoman – arguably the worst comic book movie of all time.

What is interesting about all this, however, is that many of the villains in DC – especially Batman’s rogue’s gallery – are just as compelling as (if not more than) the heroes. What draws people to The Joker is the fact that he is Chaos personified. It isn’t just the insanity, but how it manifests. It’s a trainwreck we can’t look away from and becomes more horrifying as time goes on.

Two-Face is another example of this. He was a force for good until his face was disfigured and drew out  a split personality. He is constantly at war with himself over right and wrong, and leaves the final decision up to fate – all at the extreme end of choices we have to make every day.

Deadpool, though not quite a villain (yet certainly not a hero), is fascinating because he is a parody of the genre, yet not at the same time. Venom compelled us because we all recognize Spider-Man and see just how quickly those powers can shift from one end of the moral spectrum to the other.

Harley Quinn, featured in Suicide Squad and the upcoming Birds of Prey, is another example of the fascination we have with the dark side. She wasn’t even created in the comics, but was so popular in the ’90s animated Batman series that the comics quickly added her into their stories as well. People were drawn to the former psychiatrist drawn into the insane world of The Joker because we all know what it’s like to be close to the edge, and many of us know what it’s like to be drawn to the wrong crowd.

There is something very human, though admittedly very extreme in their flaws, about these villains, and the way their stories could be told on the big screen could draw us further into identifying with those flaws. It’s not worship of the violence or insanity, as many in the media have tried to explain the success of Joker by claiming, but rather an introspective look at ourselves and seeing ourselves in these flawed individuals and (sometimes) just how close we are to relating to their plight.

I would welcome more villains on-screen getting their stories told… though, given DC’s and the Warner Bros. studio’s records, we’re gonna have to make sure they are written by people who actually know comics.

Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA) dropped interesting information during an interview on “Hannity” on Wednesday night.

Nunes said that he was aware that the former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine, Marie Yovanovitch, who had been appointed under Barack Obama and who was relieved of her duties in May, made “strange” and “irregular” requests to monitor U.S. journalists while they were in Ukraine.

Yovanovitch was asked to appear before Congress as part of the Democratic efforts to find something to impeach President Donald Trump over on Ukraine. It’s not clear if she will testify given the administrations’s stance on the inquiry. Yovanovitch is still employed by the State Department.

From Fox News:

“What I’ve heard — and I want to be clear — there’s a difference. What I’ve heard is that there were strange requests, irregular requests to monitor not just one journalist, but multiple journalists,” Nunes told host Sean Hannity. “Now perhaps that was OK. Perhaps there was some reason for that — that it can be explained away. But that’s what we know and that’s what we’re going to be looking into.”

Hannity said multiple sources have told him they “believe there is evidence that government resources were used to monitor communications” of U.S. journalists and that Yovanovitch may have been involved. Nunes noted that if the State Department had conducted surveillance over press activity in the Ukraine, it may have been done properly.

Nunes said that they were inquiring of the State Department what this was all about and trying to get to the bottom of it.

Journalist John Solomon also appeared on “Hannity” and said he has received information from the intelligence community that his communications may have been monitored inappropriately. He said he’s still looking into it. It’s not clear if his information is related to the alleged requests from the Ambassador. Solomon has been doing a lot of coverage of Ukraine, particularly of the Biden/Burisma question. He is now working for Fox.

The Obama administration had a history of spying on the media including the AP and Fox News James Rosen.

From Washington Examiner:

In 2013, the Obama Justice Department labeled then-Fox News reporter James Rosen a “criminal co-conspirator” under the Espionage Act of 1917. And all because the reporter used a State Department contractor as a source for a story. Rosen was also labeled a “flight risk.”

The Justice Department seized the records of at least five phone lines connected to Fox News. The federal law enforcement agency even seized the phone records of Rosen’s parents. The FBI also got a warrant to search Rosen’s emails from 2010.

In May 2013, the Associated Press revealed that the Justice Department had secretly collected two months’ worth of personal and work-related phone calls made by AP reporters and editors.

Federal officials secretly obtained records on incoming and outgoing calls made by specific AP journalists, as well as general news staff, the news group reported, potentially compromising many sources totally unrelated to the investigation. Federal investigators even collected data on calls made by AP reporters in the House of Representatives press gallery.

And we didn’t talk about impeachment then?

Journalist Sharyl Attkisson, who says she too was monitored by the Obama administration, weighed in on these new reports.
