In Stunning Case of TDS, YouTuber Purchases Town and Renames It “Gay Hell” to Protest Trump

People have done some very odd things while suffering from horrible and pronounced cases of Trump Derangement Syndrome.

From coming together across the nation scream at the sky to declaring they’d prefer actual Nazis to him, President Donald Trump has inspired some insanely weird behavior from people. With what looks like five more years of his Presidency on the docket, it’s hard to imagine how much further people will go in order to express their newly found disorder.

Especially after one YouTuber literally purchased a town and changed its name in order to protest Trump.

According to NBC News, Elijah Daniel was upset after Trump refused to fly the LGBT flag above American embassies during Pride Month. In reaction, Daniel went out and purchased the tiny five-acre town of Hell, Michigan. He then renamed it “Gay Hell,” because that’ll show him:

He said it is an act of protest against the Trump administration’s recent rejection of requests from U.S. embassies to fly the rainbow flag, a symbol of gay pride, during the month of June in celebration of LGBTQ Pride Month.

The town is about 15 miles northwest of Ann Arbor and is believed to have a population of about 70 people.

“Ahead of pride month Trump’s administration put a ban on embassy’s flying pride flags,” Daniel tweeted. “So as of today, I am now the owner of Hell, Michigan. I bought the whole town. And my first act as owner, I have renamed my town to Gay Hell, MI. The only flags allowed to fly are pride.”

In fairness, Daniel said this is more of a funny way of trying to get his 500,000 strong audience of primarily 16 to 24-year-olds to get more involved in politics, with the hopeful goal of getting more people to visit Michigan.

It’s not being disclosed how much Daniel purchased the town for but according to NBC News, the commercial plot that was Hell was on the market for $900,000 back in 2016.

This isn’t the first time Daniel took over leadership of Hell either:

In August 2017, he paid $100 to become the mayor of Hell for a day, banned heterosexuality and was then impeached. He said his desire to become mayor was a joke in response to President Donald Trump’s restriction on travel to the United States from a handful of Muslim countries.

Sometimes, when I’m angry at someone, I too purchase towns and change the name to something that insults the person I’m angry with. People say I’m going a bit far, but I just tell them that how I act out due to my disorder is my business…and the business of the people whose town I just bought.

Liz Cheney Calls Out AOC After Her Stunningly Ignorant Claim Trump is “Running Concentration Camps” on the Border

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY-14) is facing backlash today after remarks she made during an Instagram Live video Monday night in which she declared that Trump is a “fascist authoritarian” who is “running concentration camps” on our southern border.

The Hill reports:

The freshman lawmaker also said President Trump is a fascist, underscoring her argument that what is happening in the United States has parallels to Nazi Germany and other fascist states.

“The U.S. is running concentration camps on our southern border, and that is exactly what they are,” the freshman lawmaker said. “If that doesn’t bother you … I want to talk to the people that are concerned enough with humanity to say that ‘never again’ means something.

“The fact that concentration camps are now an institutionalized practice in the ‘Home of the Free’ is extraordinarily disturbing, and we need to do something about it,” she added.

[…..]

Ocasio-Cortez labeled the situation in the U.S. as “a crisis” over whether “America will remain America … or if we are losing to an authoritarian and fascist presidency.”

“I don’t use those words lightly. I don’t use those words to just throw bombs. I use that word because that is what an administration that creates concentration camps is,” she said. “A presidency that creates concentration camps is fascist, and it’s very difficult to say that.”

Watch video of her remarks below:

What Ocasio-Cortez said sounds kinda like the incitement she routinely accuses her critics of engaging in, doesn’t it?

Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) called out the utter absurdity of AOC’s claim:

AOC then doubled down on the stupid, asking Cheney what she would call the detention centers:

Asked and answered:

Yep.

There’s absolutely something AOC can do about this, though – but she and other shamelessly opportunistic Democrats in the U.S. House who are using the border crisis as a political football refuse to:

Sen. Mitch McConnell plans on calling the Democratic party’s bluff on this issue next week. I can’t wait.

Consultant to the Biggest Video Game in 2019 Told Social Justice Warriors Where to Stick It

Westlake Legal Group 1b4f1e3e-eb20-4dee-a30b-ae8841a73b67.v1-620x317 Consultant to the Biggest Video Game in 2019 Told Social Justice Warriors Where to Stick It transgender SJWs Politics Offense Mike Pondsmith Media LGBT Internet Gaming Front Page Stories Featured Story Entertainment Cyberpunk 2077 Cyberpunk 2020 CD Projekt Red Allow Media Exception

Mike Pondsmith is the creator of the Cyberpunk 2020, a popular tabletop role-playing game much like Dungeons & Dragons, only set in a future where self-identity has come first. In fact, a 1995 supplemental rule book for the tabletop RPG lists almost a perfect description of what’s happening today in its description of the world.

It’s eerily prophetic.

With the highly anticipated and Keanu Reeves assisted hype of Cyberpunk 2077 by CD Projekt Red coming out soon, Pondsmith has reentered the spotlight, and rightly so. He’s been appearing on message boards, participating in interviews, and even playing his own tabletop game with high profile gaming sites, all in preparation for the release of 2077.

Of course, like anything that is this high profile, the social justice warriors within our society want their pound of flesh and have found their excuse to demand it.

In one of the advertisements for the game, a screenshot was released of a trans person selling soda with a very pronounced…bulge. This has naturally set off the trans activist community, which has taken offense to it…because of course, they have.

Pondsmith, speaking to people discussing the topic in a Reddit thread, weighed in after people more or less demanded that he take offense to the picture in the game. To say the least, he wasn’t having it according to Niche Gamer:

“Want to say this just once. I am really tired of well meaning people on internet chat boards paternalistically telling me what I, as a black person, should be offended by. You want to be my ally? Go gird up your loins and at this year’s Thanksgiving dinner, have the nerve to tell your racist Uncle Bob to STFU for a change.”

Pondsmith was backed up by Art Director for 2077 Kasia Redesiuk, who acknowledged that the reason that trans person is there is because it reflects the kind of world 2077 is for the sake of story:

“You’ll notice many advertisements – for anything, a table, chair, a roof tile – slap a random sexy person on top and say ‘hey, buy this’. This shows the sexploitation of those people, and many of our advertisements feature this sexualisation. We sexualise men, women, and people in between, all to show how terrible this is.

With our advertisements, we want to say something. For instance, there’s an advert for a fashion shop with the Colosseum – this beautiful piece of architecture – which has been taken over and turned into a marketplace. It’s art destroyed for consumerism’s sake.

[…] So yes, we have a person with both breasts and a penis on an advertisement, done on purpose, because it’s terrible to exploit people’s bodies like this. The poster in question is an advert for Chromanticore, a regular cola, one of many fictional drink brands in the game.

We thought this would be a brand which would slap a body on the advert and think nothing of it. It’s a terrible thing to say ‘mix it up’. We’re emulating what a company would say in Cyberpunk 2077.”

The problem that the SJW community is having is that it can’t separate the story from reality. It believes that no matter what medium it is, certain groups must be handled with velvet gloves at all times. It must be addressed with respect, if not reverence.

This is not how you make a good story, but SJWs don’t care about a good story, they care about being shown in glorious light. This is why you see companies that embrace the SJW message — Mass Effect Andromede, for instance, — fail miserably, while games that reject it succeed like Far Cry 5.

I would love to see more creators stand against the pressure the hard left community attempts to force on them and focus more on creating good stories than appeasing unpleasable people.

It’s striking how quickly the culture can change. Just a short time ago, surely few would’ve believed that a common viewpoint — that it would be unfair to let guys take away athletic victories from girls by allowing them to compete in women’s sports — would be labeled the result of an irrational fear.

Yet here we are: What was considered common sense and common goodness is now a symptom of mental illness.

“Transphobia” has gotten so much traction, in fact, that Brazil just criminalized it — it’s punishable by a half decade in prison. See my coverage of that turn of events here.

About 4,000 miles north — in Connecticut — one girl’s standing against the athletic co-mingling of the sexes, transphobia be darned.

High school track runner Selina Soule is speaking her mind…to the government.

Selina was recently sidelined by not one but two men who beat her: After finishing behind a group that included a couple dudes in the 55-meter dash, she was unable to compete in the New England regionals.

As I’ve pointed out previously, this is what the infiltration of men into women’s athletics does: It steals attention and opportunity and scholarships and careers from women who would otherwise find them. It robs them of bright futures that their wins and awards would otherwise have brought.

On Tucker Carlson Tonight Monday, Selina and her attorney — Christiana Holcomb of the Alliance Defending Freedom — voiced their opposition to that confiscation.

For Selina, the quest for justice has wrought blowback:

“I’ve gotten nothing but support from my teammates and from other athletes, but I have experienced some retaliation from school officials and coaches. … I’ve gotten some very difficult requests for me to complete in practice, and if I don’t fulfill these requests, then I can’t compete at all. And this never happened before. It only started after my parents met with the school principal.”

Tucker asked, “Is there any chance of [men’s intrusion] being undone?”

Christiana said Yes.

A Title IX complaint is being filed, asking the Department of Education “to step in, to investigate, and to restore a level playing field for Selina.”

“Title IX was designed to ensure that girls have a fair shake at athletics and are not denied the opportunity to participate at the highest levels of competition,” she explained.

Selina pointed out she isn’t the only girl on her team to fall victim to a dominating dude:

“We missed out on winning the state open championship because of the team that the transgender athlete was, won.”

To highlight the damage, Christiana offered a stunning stat:

“One of these male athletes now holds 10 records inside the state of Connecticut that were once held by 10 individual girls and were established over the course of about a 20-year period.”

Wow.

Tucker summarized:

“It’s grotesque and insane, and it hurts women and girls. And the very people who claim to be defending women and girls are abetting this and making it possible.”

It’s a potent reminder of just how political things can be — at the same time men are being criticized for keeping women down, men who are doing the same on the field are being praised. It’s the result of an altogether different kind of oppression: identity politics is on the track, and it’s beating the pants off the principle of fairness.

And when fairness loses…well, that flat-out stinks. Or maybe I’m just a stinkophobe.

Video: Lawrence Jones Discusses the Racist Taunts He Received at a New York “Impeach Trump” Rally

Campus Reform editor-in-chief Lawrence Jones appears on the Sean Hannity Show – 6/17/19. Screen grab via Fox News.

Over the weekend, Fox News contributor and Campus Reform editor-in-chief Lawrence Jones went to an “Impeach Trump” rally in New York City to interview attendees and get their thoughts on why they believed President Trump should be impeached.

Jones got a lot of garden variety answers from the crowd along the lines of “Trump colluded with the Russians!” and “Trump’s an illegal president!”, but what stood out even more than those answers were the racist taunts Jones received from some of the rally-goers:

According to a Fox News producer at the scene, two men walked up to Jones near the end of the rally and told him to go back to Fox News “where there’s more cotton for you to pick.”

The producer said he asked one of the men: “What did you just say?” When the man made the same comment, the producer asked if he “was really going to say that,” to which the man responded: “I sure am.”

With Jones’ camera rolling, the man confronted by the producer, wearing a gray shirt, turned his back to the camera and made an obscene gesture. The second man, wearing a red shirt, told Jones: “He’ll tell you to go back to Kenya next.”

“You say what now?” Jones asked.

“He’ll tell you ‘go back to Kenya’ next,” the man in the red shirt said.

Jones appeared on Sean Hannity’s program Monday night and talked about his experience:

Two men who hurled racial taunts at Fox News contributor Lawrence Jones reveal the true sentiments of some on the left, he said.

Jones told Sean Hannity on “Hannity” that many conservatives are wrongfully construed as hateful and discriminatory, and the media will likely ignore the New York City incident.

“This is who they are, Sean,” the Campus Reform editor-in-chief claimed. “So often those of us on the right are painted as the racist people, the hateful people,” he said.

“I was just asking these people a simple question about if they felt like the president should be impeached or not.”

[…]

“I’m going to expose it every single day. If they think I’ll stand down because they yelled obscene things, to me they have another thing coming.”

According to Hannity, Jones and his camera crew were only able to get one of the two racist taunts on video. Watch Jones’s interview with Hannity below – included is the one racist incident they were able to capture on camera:

Jones is right in that our mainstream media firefighters by and large will not condemn this. I would be seriously shocked to see Brian Stelter weigh in on the incident. Stelter is too busy questioning Trump’s mental health and actually attacking Fox News to care much about what happens to its journalists, hosts, and contributors.

Unfortunately, what happened to Jones is not just a one-off. These types of vicious taunts happen to black conservatives daily. Female conservatives get insulted, too, and are labeled as “slaves to the patriarchy” and other such nonsense. Hispanic conservatives are treated the same way. Same for conservatives in the LGBTQ community.

Basically, if you are considered a minority and you don’t toe the liberal line on perpetual victimhood and leftism in general, you are an inauthentic woman/black person/Hispanic/LGBTQ, etc.

One of the biggest lies the left has been able to successfully perpetuate over the years is that they are “tolerant” and “welcoming” of diverse viewpoints from diverse groups. They’re not. They never have been. The vile treatment Jones received is one on a long list of many such incidents that disprove the left’s claims of “tolerance.”

Democrats Once Again Ask Us to Give Up Our Guns As They Promote Physical Conflict

Westlake Legal Group ar-15-protest-620x338 Democrats Once Again Ask Us to Give Up Our Guns As They Promote Physical Conflict Violence Politics Joe Biden Guns gun crime Front Page Stories firearms Featured Story diane feinstein democrats Chris Murphy ar-15 Allow Media Exception

If someone with an electricity problem came to me about it I would direct them to an electrician, not begin rattling off nonsense about how power cables are a danger to society and resorting to disproven ways of keeping us safe from electric shock and outlet fires.

Democrats seem to have this kind of mindset about firearms, and consistently rattle off “facts” and insight that is particularly ridiculous, especially given the fact that much of what they suggest only seems to worsen problems or, at the very least, exposes their ignorance.

It’s worse when politicians are on the campaign trail simultaneously suggesting that Democrats get physical with Republicans.

Diane Feinstein (D-Calif) and Chris Murphy (D- Conn) recently penned an article in TIME, once again calling for the ban of America’s most popular rifle, the AR-15.

The dystopian duo made the usual case you hear from Democrats trying to get you to give up your gun rights. There have been shootings and gun violence, and Republicans are standing in the way of lawmakers passing strict gun regulations that would magically make all of this stop.

It wouldn’t, and getting rid of guns in America would be impossible, as I explain in this video below.

They then begin asking why nothing is changing and throw out the “97 percent of people agree” line about universal background checks. This number was found by a Quinnipiac poll in 2018 and has remained highly suspect due to the fact that 97 percent of people simply don’t agree on anything. Furthermore, if 97 percent of people did agree, then it’s odd that a universal background check law hasn’t been passed by Congress since in a no-contest vote.

Regardless, the core of the article is talking about how Republicans are essentially the reason you keep seeing shootings happen, completely ignoring the fact that the majority of these shootings occur due to being in a gun free zone where people are pretty much guaranteed not to shoot back.

They then attempted to tell you, the reader, about what AR-15’s are used for.

“Guns like the AR-15 aren’t used for hunting and they’re not viable for home protection,” wrote the Democrats. “They have only one purpose, and that’s to fire as many rounds as possible, as quickly as possible.”

Expect not.

As David Rutz at the Free Beacon notes, many hunters do use the AR-15 for just that purpose, not to mention home defense:

However, the AR-15, the most popular rifle in America, is used for hunting and home defense. MRC-TV noted a poll showing more than 25 percent of hunters reported using the rifle to hunt big game. In addition, the rifle is popular for home defense given its light weight and limited recoil, making it easier for owners to handle.

The Daily Signal reported on eight recent examples of civilians using AR-15s to protect themselves and others, including a 15-year-old Texas boy who fought off two home invaders threatening him and his 12-year-old sister.

The Democrats finish by putting in on Republicans to fall in with Democrats on banning and restricting firearms and lists the classic Democrat warning of “people will die” if they don’t.

“Senate Democrats are ready to vote,” wrote the Democrats. “It’s time for Senate Republicans to show some courage and implement sane gun safety reforms. If we don’t, more will die.”

It should be noted that Democrats don’t truly care about the AR-15. Handguns are used far more in violent crime, and Democrats have more or less given up on going that route in their quest for gun control. The attack on the AR-15 is just an attempt to chip away at what they think is the weakest part of the wall.

The truth is that guns aren’t going anywhere. America’s foundation literally involves the use of guns by civilians as a method of keeping its government in check. The 2nd Amendment wasn’t created to protect us from deer and clay pigeons, but oppression. While it’s true that guns are used in malicious ways, they are also primarily responsible for saving lives either through law enforcement or self-defense.

Especially in an age where Democrats are getting more physical than ever, and with their leaders suggesting physicality on the regular — Joe Biden just did it on Monday — I’m not exactly feeling good about giving up my best means of defense. If politicians like Maxine Waters and Corey Booker are out there urging their base to find them wherever they are, get in their face, and make them feel unwelcome, then giving up our best means of defense is out of the question.

We live in an era where Antifa will literally show up at your door or assault you on the street. Where an angry mob may confront you while you’re trying to sit down to dinner. At some point, someone is going to take something too far and I’d rather be prepared than sorry.

The sheepdog doesn’t hand over his teeth to the wolves. You shouldn’t hand over your teeth either.

Joe Biden Suggests a “Physical Revolution” to Deal With Senate Republicans

Joe Biden is a gaffe factory. He churns them out on an assembly line where they slip right past quality control and hit the market where they are eagerly gobbled up by people like me. Personally, I consider his gaffes one of his most entertaining qualities.

On Monday, Biden decided to model a gaffe of his after Maxine Waters by suggesting people get physical if they don’t like the way Republicans are doing things.

While at the Moral Action Congress of the Poor People’s Campaign in Washington, D.C., Biden was being asked by MSNBC’s Joy Reid how Biden would get past a majority Republican Senate set to kill anything Biden wants.

“How would you get past either a majority Republican Senate in which Mitch McConnell was determined to kill all of these ideas or even a Mitch McConnell in the minority who repeated the consistent filibustering when you were vice president and anything that came from the Obama-Biden administration Mitch McConnell considered dead on arrival?” asked Reid.

At first, Biden’s response was pretty reasonable.

“Joy, I know you’re one of the ones who thinks it’s naive to think we have to work together,” Biden said while looking Ried directly in the eye. “The fact of the matter is if we can’t get a consensus, nothing happens except the abuse of power by the executive.”

Biden noted that the second option was a “brass knuckle fight.”

“If you start off with the notion that there’s nothing you can do, then why don’t you go home then, man?” said Biden. “Or let’s start a real physical revolution if you’re talking about it. Because we have to be able to change what we’re doing in our system.”

I’m under the impression that Biden was trying to emphasize bipartisan cooperation from Democrats and essentially telling them that if they aren’t willing to do that then stop complaining and do something about it, thinking they probably wouldn’t take it that far.

The problem is that I’m not sure if Biden knows his own party if that’s the case. He’s from an age where bipartisanship was a bit easier to come by and the internet wasn’t around making it easier to organize mobs. He may not realize that the left takes it that far all the time in the form of Antifa riots, physical confrontations at restaurants, and campus violence.

Regardless, that Biden would even suggest a physical revolution in a physical way in a universe without a violent left is irresponsible.

I’d like to give gaffe-master B the benefit of the doubt and say he’s calling out Democrats for being expert complainers who do nothing about it, and that they have no choice but to try to work together with Republicans for the benefit of our nation, but I can’t say for sure. He’s not making that an easy argument to stand by, and in this day and age where Antifa may just show up at your door, no matter how you slice it, Biden’s words come off as threatening.

Kyle Kashuv Shows Us Again That We Can’t Have Honest Debate

Westlake Legal Group Untitled-1-17-620x384 Kyle Kashuv Shows Us Again That We Can’t Have Honest Debate twitter Social Media racism mob Kyle Kashuv Front Page Stories Featured Story debate Allow Media Exception

Yesterday, the top story on all the social media trends was the story of Harvard in-accepting Parkland shooting survivor Kyle Kashuv. The reason? The university was made aware of texts from Kyle’s days as a 16-year-old (not all that long ago), some of which contained racist terms and other offensive material.

Kashuv told the story on social media, and it gained traction. Never once did he, in my view, play the sympathy card, or the victim card. Instead, he basically says “I’m not going to Harvard. This is why. I tried working it out with them, but it didn’t happen.”

Now, Kashuv is a pro-gun advocate who took to the national stage along with, though opposite from, many of his classmates. He saw the Parkland shooting as a failure of safety measures that the United States government could act on, but his solutions did not involve restrictions on the Second Amendment. His views were endorsed by the likes of Ben Shapiro and other big names on the right while the left savaged him.

So, naturally, when yesterday’s story erupted, the two sides strapped on their jackboots and went to their bunkers to arm up.

There are hundreds of thought pieces written about the issue specifics already. They detail who their authors believe was in the right and who was in the wrong. You can’t open up Twitter right now without seeing some other person commenting on it for the 150th time. I’m not here to talk about the specifics, though.

I have a worry about stories like the and the fallout from our natural reactions.

I mentioned a very specific visual a minute ago: Strapping on the jackboots and heading to the bunkers. You can see a bunch of angry leftists muttering about Kashuv being a racist just like the rest of the GOP and you can see angry right-wingers muttering about how they’ll win this war because the Democrats don’t even believe in guns. It’s almost like a weird World War I movie, except set on Twitter, which thank God Almighty we didn’t have for either world war.

From the bunkers, each side shouts at each other. Someone will say something they consider witty, and a hundred heads standing around them will nod in agreement. Across the battlefield, the other side does the same thing. Insult and nods of approval. The problem is that neither side heard the other and, more importantly, neither side will try to understand the other.

Kashuv said some bad things. They are not defensible things. The kid screwed up in the language he used. Do I think he needs to be un-accepted from Harvard for it? Of course not. But, you have to acknowledge that it was bad. He owned up to it, but that doesn’t erase what he did.

However, it’s not healthy for us to continue trying to destroy the lives of people we don’t agree with. Kashuv made a mistake, but it’s not a mistake worth destroying someone’s chance at a prestigious education for. What he did was stupid, showed a lack of judgment, and totally accepted within his cultural circles. That doesn’t make it right, but there is social context that is missing.

But no one wants to come together and hash this out. We must sit in our respective bunkers and hurl rhetorical bombs at each other without stopping to ask why the hell we’re doing that instead of talking.

This is a mistake, and it’s growing more and more common as the years go by. We’re losing the ability to speak to each other, instead focusing on our beliefs and ideas instead of trying to understand someone else’s. When we’re not focusing on our beliefs and ideas, though, we are coming to a snap judgment on someone else’s based on loosely-affiliated data about that person’s beliefs and ideas.

Kids make mistakes, and this is a good one to learn a lesson from. But, we can’t expect the future Kyle Kashuvs to take lesson as well as this one did, and we can’t expect our society to survive if we don’t work toward understanding.

Mayor Pete Buttigieg should know better than to demand concessions from Israel regarding land it has already paid for, in blood.

In a recent interview with Axios Democrat Presidential contender, Mayor, and one-time Naval Lieutenant, Pete Buttigieg made a couple of comments I found surprising coming from a former military officer.

When asked about President Trump’s decision to move the U.S. Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, Buttigieg responded

That doesn’t mean he did the right thing. Here’s the problem with what he did … [I]f you’re going to make a concession like that, if you’re going to give somebody something that they’ve wanted for a long time in the context of a push-pull, even with a strong ally like Israel, right? We have a push-pull relationship. And you don’t do that without getting some kind of concession.

Somebody needs to explain to that young man how our system works. The United States Embassy to Israel has since 1995, been required by U.S. Law, to be located in Jerusalem. Taking “care that the laws be faithfully executed,” in the case of the 1995 statute, requires no use of leverage, trade-offs or concessions from the State of Israel. All that is required, is the intestinal fortitude displayed by President Trump.

To make matters worse, the boy mayor just had to spout off about the Golan Heights.

It’s the same thing with recognition of the Golan. Look, the Israeli claims in the Golan are not something to be ignored. They have a lot to do with legitimate security interests. But when we did that, we were doing something that could have been part of a negotiated package, and instead we just gave it away.

Gave it away? Gave it away!! I shouldn’t have to tell
Lieutenant Buttigieg this, But the United States didn’t give anything away. The Golan Heights isn’t ours to give. It’s was captured from the Syrians in 1967, and again paid for in 1973, with the blood of Avigdor Ben-Gal and his 7th Brigade Troopers. Of course, the boy mayor and sometime Naval Lieutenant wasn’t even born when the Israelis defeated an attacking Syrian Force that outnumbered them by over five to one. So it’s not surprising that he speaks on a subject he obviously has no familiarity with. Perhaps he should put a note or two about Yom Kippur War in his Wheel Book**

We’re Asking Each Other to Do the Impossible Task Of Being Perfect, and We Have to Stop

We all make mistakes. Imperfection is a characteristic humanity has lived with since Eve bit the apple. We never leave being imperfect behind, we only get wiser as we go along and do the best we can with the knowledge we have. This means that when you’re young you’re incredibly prone to being imperfect.

So, when I saw the messages that Parkland shooting survivor and gun rights activist Kyle Kashuv had privately sent to a friend that contained racist messaging and jokes about violence, I wasn’t surprised. Not because I think Kashuv is a bad person — I don’t think he is at all — but because children and teenagers find shocking things funny. Many in Generation Z has even made it a central part of their reasoning.

Kashuv was 16-years-old when he sent those text messages. He’s now 18, and between sending those texts and today, Kashuv has undergone a journey that few have, or would even wish to. The 16-year-old Kyle Kashuv and the 18-year-old Kyle Kashuv may be only two years apart but they are completely different people. There’s no way for them not to be.

To be sure, Kashuv has maturely owned up to his past behavior and apologized for it. That should have been the end of it.

However, Harvard University doesn’t see it that way, and after accepting Kashuv as a student, they now feel that Kashuv’s past text messages are a superb reason to retract his admittance. This is absolutely ludicrous, and in no small part because they’re essentially rejected a person for something they did when they were young and stupid.

But even more egregious is the idea that this is okay from the general public. In fact, some people seem to be celebrating it.

I expect partisan feelings to cause people take victory laps and spike footballs at the misfortune of someone they disagree with politically, but like the people who crucified another Jewish person at the behest of a cheering mob, they know not what they do.

The pattern that we’re setting for ourselves is pure perfection, which as a completely unattainable thing for human beings. It’s the idea that anything done in your past must be held against you and damn the context by which you committed the sin.

This means that edgy behavior or anything done in order to get shock laughs is a one-hit-kill for your future.

If you make shocking jokes about pedophilia then you must be treated as if you truly are a pedophile just like James Gunn was. If you make a joke that edges too close to being about race, then you must be a racist and treated as such just like Tim Allen or Roseanne Barr.

People do edgy things because they think it’s funny and it will get a reaction that others, especially themselves, will find hilarious to watch. Maybe they’re just trying to impress a friend with how shocking they can be. Either way, it doesn’t matter. Much of what was said is either not intended to actually be harmful to anyone. Even Barr’s comments about Valerie Jarret are the only thing that even comes close to being racist and she apologized for it without prompting. She knew she went too far before the backlash truly started.

We’ve set the standard far too high for ourselves and chances are you’ve already failed to meet that standard at some point in your life. Should that moment(s) from your past become public, it should not be an indication of who you are now, and you definitely shouldn’t be punished for it.

Yet here we are being judged by our imperfect peers for our imperfections with arbitrary rules that change depending on the situation or person. Criminals who killed children are treated with far more respect than someone who said something bad online. In fact, Michelle Jones got a glowing review in the New York Times after she was released from prison for murdering a four-year-old. She was rejected from Harvard too, but people on the left were furious about it.

Just a reminder, this is the same side currently laughing at Kashuv for being rejected over saying the “n-word” in a private text when he was 16.

None of us can do what we’re asking of each other. We cannot continue to expect perfection in others while we live with imperfection daily. We cannot continue to hold others accountable for their past selves while we all try to hide things from our own pasts.

We definitely shouldn’t ruin lives over stupid things we said.
