Bret Baier: Trump administration will consider ‘retooling’ citizenship question

Westlake Legal Group 694940094001_6057099401001_6057100312001-vs Bret Baier: Trump administration will consider 'retooling' citizenship question fox-news/us/crime fox-news/topic/fox-news-flash fox-news/politics/judiciary/supreme-court fox-news/entertainment/media fox news fnc/us fnc article Anna Hopkins 51aeb769-b738-5e06-8007-c1faa03cd5bf

Bret Baier has argued that the Trump administration will continue to push for inclusion of the controversial citizenship question on the 2020 census, despite being thwarted by the Supreme Court last week.

It was ruled last month the question couldn’t be added for now, but left open the possibility that additional arguments could change its mind. Civil rights groups argued that the Trump administration’s reasons for including the question were merely pretextual efforts to discourage illegal immigrants from responding to the Census.

“There’s a possibility of retooling it and going a different way at it,” Baier said during a Tuesday appearance on “The Daily Briefing With Dana Perino.”

CAL THOMAS: CENSORING THE CENSUS IS ABOUT POLITICS, NOT THE LAW

“The administration, at the president’s guidance, will try to do that,” the “Special Report” host continued.

The Commerce Department has previously said that the deadline to begin the process of printing census forms was June 30, but President Trump has made clear his desire to delay census printing until the question is included.

“I have asked the lawyers if they can delay the Census, no matter how long, until the United States Supreme Court is given additional information from which it can make a final and decisive decision on this very critical matter,” he tweeted on June 27, the day the decision was handed down.

The question was controversial and the subject of several lawsuits after many lawmakers argued that residents who are not living legally in the United States would simply not return the census – leading to misappropriation of resources and improper political representation.

Population counts from the Census are used to apportion House seats among the 50 states, and a new electoral map based on the Census will be in effect for the 2024 presidential election. States receive votes in the Electoral College equal to the number of members in their congressional delegation, counting both House and Senate seats.

National Archives confirm Declaration of Independence, Constitution and Bill of Rights safe after D.C. flooding

Dangerous flash floods have rocked the Washington, D.C. area on Monday, but the nation’s founding documents are safe, according to The National Archives.

The historic building, which contains significant artifacts including the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution, and the Bill of Rights, announced it closed due to electrical outrages on Monday amid the chaotic flooding. More than six inches of rain pounded parts of the D.C. area in just a two-hour time span earlier in the day.

The National Archives confirmed that the historical objects it holds were still intact, and shed some light on their safety procedures in the process.

“The Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution, and the Bill of Rights–along with all of the permanently valuable records stored in the building–are safe and not in any danger,” the statement read.

COWS IN MINNESOTA SWEPT AWAY DURING FLASH FLOOD, DRAMATIC VIDEO SHOWS

“All safety emergency equipment is up and working. Crews are on site working to restore the main power vault which was flooded via groundwater infiltration. The building’s flood walls deployed and worked,” it continued.

Shocking images posted to social media showed the terrifying reality of the flash floods in the area, as some drivers became stuck in the high waters and were forced to swim to safety or stand on top of their cars until help arrived.

There was substantial flooding surrounding The National Archives, making the streets inaccessible but not reaching the building’s stone staircase or pillars.

In response to the National Archives’ statement on Twitter, many were quick to make jokes about the movie “National Treasure,” in which Nicolas Cage steals the Declaration of Independence from the Archives.

Country music star Lee Greenwood was especially proud to be an American over the holiday weekend, after working with a nonprofit to provide a specialized home for an Afghanistan war veteran who lost his legs overseas.

Greenwood teamed up with Helping a Hero to provide wounded warrior Matt Deatherage with a home equipped for him to live independently, and the two men appeared on “Fox & Friends” on Monday to talk about the new house and the organization that made it happen.

Deatherage said he was “amazed” at his new home, and the hard work done by Helping a Hero to aid dozens of veterans like himself with special needs.

“Each of these veterans have their own issues to deal with,” Deatherage said. “Not everyone fits into a specific mold.” The Army veteran was deployed to Kandahar, Afghanistan in 2010, and stepped on a land mine in March 2011 which resulted in the loss of both of his legs. Although he wears state-of-the-art prosthetics, he developed diabetes after his injury and now uses a wheelchair the majority of the time.

His new home is equipped with ramps and wide doors to accommodate his chair, as well as an exterior pathway so that he can get around outdoors.

Greenwood, best known for his iconic song “God Bless the U.S.A.,” said he felt particularly called to get involved with Helping a Hero. The organization has provided over 100 homes to veterans in 22 states, the singer said.

Trump’s opinion on UFOs: Nope — but you never know

Does President Trump believe the truth is out there?

Apparently not.

During an interview with Fox News’ Tucker Carlson, Trump, who has all our information about extraterrestrials and UFOs at his disposal, said he isn’t convinced UFOs exist.

But he’s keeping an open mind.

UFOS REMAIN ELUSIVE DESPITE DECADES OF STUDY

“Well, I don’t want to really get into it too much.  But personally, I tend to doubt it,” he told Carlson. “I’m not a believer, but you know, I guess anything is possible.”

Carlson was pressing the president on a recent briefing he had regarding the Navy pilots who reported seeing “strange objects” flying at hypersonic speeds and emitting “no visible engine or infrared exhaust plumes.” Last week, the Defense Department also held a briefing with Senate Intelligence Committee Vice Chairman Mark Warner, D-Va., as well as two other senators as part of an apparent effort to communicate with politicians about naval encounters with unidentified aircraft.

“I mean, you have people that swear by it, right?” Trump mused.

“And pilots have come in and they said — and these are pilots that have — not pilots that are into that particular world, but we have had people saying that they’ve seen things.”

Carlson also asked the president about a claim made by a government official who said U.S. is in possession of UFO wreckage at a facility on an Air Force Base. Trump said he hadn’t heard about it but had seen the story covered on Carlson’s show.

“I don’t assume it’s correct.  But, I have an open mind, Tucker,” he continued.

Army widow on Tunnel to Towers’ gift of a mortgage-free home: ‘It means everything’

An Army widow whose husband died in Iraq was given a mortgage-free home in New Jersey by the non-profit organization Tunnels to Towers.

“It means everything,” Stephanie Wildrick told “America’s Newsroom” host Bill Hemmer on Wednesday alongside the Tunnel to Towers CEO, Frank Siller.

Frank Siller founded Tunnel to Towers in honor of his brother Steven, who ran through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel on 9/11 with 60 pounds of gear and died trying to save New Yorkers in the Twin Towers.

Stephanie’s husband, Ronald H. Wildrick Jr., was killed by an IED while serving in Afghanistan in 2011. He left behind his loving wife and two daughters Kaylee and Leah.

“As an only parent, you worry about the future of your kids and not knowing if you’ll be able to afford your own home,” Stephanie said of her life after her husband’s death.

LUCIA SUAREZ SANG: I’M A PROUD (NEW) AMERICAN – AND THIS HAPPENED WHEN I SAID MY FIRST PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE

Frank Siller said that the Wildricks “paid a tremendous price,” and understood that although a home could never replace the loss of their beloved husband and father, he hoped it could take some of the financial burden off of Stephanie’s shoulders.

“Her husband gave his life for our freedom, independence and safety,” Siller said. “I think it’s important as a country we make sure we take care of these families left behind.”

The Tunnel to Towers Foundation, with the help of other organizations, frequently helps support families who have lost loved ones serving the country, as well as injured veterans. Last week, Siller announced that the Foundation was seeking donations to pay for a home for the family of Cpl. Jose ‘Speedy’ Espericueta, who was shot and killed in the line of duty in the border town of Mission, Texas.

HARRIS FAULKNER: THIS FOURTH OF JULY, LET’S SALUTE OUR MILITARY FAMILIES —  THEY SACRIFICE FOR OUR FREEDOM, TOO

Siller also said he’s reaching out to the families of nine Americans who lost their lives in Iraq, and five who died in Syria, in an attempt to make a difference in their lives as he did for the Wildricks.

During an emotional ceremony on Monday, the youngest Wildrick daughter, Leah, said she knew her father would be happy with the work Tunnels to Towers did for her family.

Ambassador Grenell: Human Rights Campaign should ‘cease to exist’ if they stay silent on Antifa attack

The U.S. Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell slammed organizations like the Human Rights Campaign for their silence in light of the attack on conservative journalist Andy Ngo over the weekend.

Ngo was videotaped being punched, kicked and doused with a milkshake by Antifa members during a clash between them and a right-wing group on Saturday in Portland. The footage did not show what led up to the attack or what followed, but there did not appear to be a police presence.

Grenell, a friend of Ngo’s, told “America’s Newsroom” Tuesday that he believes Antifa targeted Ngo for his political affiliations, as well as his race and sexuality.

“They knew that he is gay, that he’s Asian, and that he is conservative,” Grenell said.

ATTORNEY FOR JOURNALIST ATTACKED BY ANTIFA SAYS SHE PLANS TO ‘SUE EVERYBODY’ THE LAW PERMITS

“We are now in a situation where the largest gay and lesbian groups have stayed silent, not only stayed silent, but their spokeswoman has tried to change it around to say he deserves this,” he continued.

The ambassador referred to the Human Rights Campaign, an organization which does not appear to have made a public statement about the attack on Ngo. Their press secretary, Charlotte Clymer, condemned the violence in a tweet to her personal Twitter account, but highlighted Ngo’s history as a provocateur.

PORTLAND MAYOR SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED BY FEDS OVER ANTIFA ATTACK ON CONSERVATIVE WRITER, SEN. CRUZ SAYS

“Andy Ngo intentionally provokes people on the left to drive his content. Being attacked today on video taken by an actual journalist (because Ngo is definitely not) is the greatest thing that could have happened to his career,” she wrote on Sunday.

“Violence is completely wrong, and I find it sad and weak to allow a sniveling weasel like Andy Ngo to get under one’s skin like this, but I’m also not going to pretend that this wasn’t Ngo’s goal from the start,” she continued.

Grenell called the comments “completely wrong” and insinuated that the organization is staying silent because Ngo is conservative and of Asian descent.

“This is an organization that demands to have a voice, and if they are not going to use their voice across the board in every situation when a gay person is bashed like this, then they should cease to exist,” he said.

Restaurant franchisee says Democrats’ $15 minimum wage would put him out of business

A restaurant franchisee made an impassioned argument Tuesday against the left’s push for a $15 minimum wage, saying it would force him to fire employees and could put him out of business.

Larry Fox, who owns a restaurant group that maintains Hooters locations in Florida and Alabama, wrote in a recent op-ed for the Wall Street Journal that he is “panicked” over Democratic lobbying for a higher minimum wage. He told “Fox & Friends” on Tuesday that his employees already make more than the minimum wage with tips – a policy called “tip credit.”

“A lot of my employees are young, they’re going to school and they use this as flexible work hours to earn up to 20, 25, 28 dollars an hour,” Fox said. “It gives them the ability to work and stay in school, but if I lose the tip credit that will increase my labor cost 100%.”

BARTENDER HARASSES PATRON, SWATS AT PHONE AFTER HE REFUSES TO PAY FOR WATER: ‘YOU’VE GOTTA GO HOME’

Fox said that his restaurants, like many others, are seasonal and don’t have a high profit margin. If a $15 minimum wage went into effect, he said there’d be no way to raise his prices to offset the cost.

Some states have already introduced the new minimum wage, including New Jersey, California, Massachusetts, Maryland and Illinois. A bill to raise the federal minimum wage to $15 is expected to advance in the House after the Fourth of July recess.

Fox, however, said there’s a bevy of problems for restaurateurs that come along with that.

“If we can still have a reduced tip credit, we use the tips to offset it, and our girls are making more than that now,” he said.

“The big problem is, you’ve got increased costs in the FICA insurance, unemployment insurance, our medical insurance, all of that continues to go up as well as wages,” he continued.

Building collapse leaves at least 19 dead, 24 injured in Cambodia

A building has collapsed in Cambodia, leaving at least 19 construction workers dead and another 24 injured.

The seven-story building in the coastal city of Sihanoukville was under construction when it suddenly collapsed around 4 a.m. on Saturday. Construction crews were also using the building as housing, spending nights on the second floor of the building. One worker said he estimates there were approximately 60 people in the building at the time of its collapse, but the Cambodian Ministry of Labor and Vocational Training said there were just 30.

“All the workers were asleep,” said 31-year-old Nhor Chandeun, who was sleeping with his wife in the building when it began to crumble. “A moment before the building collapsed it was vibrating and then it was falling down. But it was too quick to escape.”

Chandeun is now in the hospital after being trapped in the rubble for 12 hours before rescuers found them.

HONG KONG LEADER IGNORES PROTESTERS’ DEADLINE TO PULL CONTROVERSIAL EXTRADITION BILL

“My wife and I kept calling for help,” he said. “We were shouting and shouting but there was no sound replying to us and we presumed that we would die under the rubble.”

Police have detained four Chinese nationals for questioning in connection to the building’s collapse, though the cause of the disaster is not yet clear. The building is owned by a Chinese investor who planned to turn it into a condominium, according to Yun Min, the governor of Preah Sihanouk province.

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen said on Sunday that he would be traveling to Sihanoukville to oversee the rescue efforts. Bodies were still being recovered on Sunday evening.

Suspect in brutal New York rape arrested near Canadian border after weeks-long manhunt

A man accused of brutally beating and raping a woman in a Queens, New York, neighborhood has been arrested in Washington state following a manhunt that lasted nearly a month.

Michael Hosang, 53, was apprehended by police on Thursday at a hotel in Bellingham, Wa., less than 25 miles from the Canadian border. Earlier this month, a 29-year-old woman escaped from his home with severe bruising and a broken cheekbone and claimed Hosang had held her there for at least six hours while he repeatedly sexually assaulted her.

She managed to escape from a second story window, then slid down a drainpipe, ran naked into the street and flagged down a passing car for help, the New York Daily News reports. The driver gave her something to cover herself with and called the police.

The woman told the authorities that Hosand had beaten, strangled and raped her, tied and handcuffed her in a room and told her that he would kill her.

After she escaped, Hosang fled New York in a red Chevrolet pickup truck and was on the run for the last three weeks until being discovered in Washington.

He is now awaiting extradition to New York, where he’ll face charges of first-degree rape, first-degree criminal sexual acts, first-degree aggravated sexual abuse and criminal obstruction of breathing, court records show.

Since reports of the attack first emerged, other women are said to have come forward with similar stories of their terrifying experiences with Hosang, according to the Bellingham Herald.

According to his Facebook page, Hosang is a manager at Hoops and Vivid Cabaret NYC, both strip clubs in the New York metropolitan area. He also claimed to have previously managed the Sapphire strip club in midtown Manhattan, and studied accounting at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Social media also shows that he has a daughter who graduated from a Florida college in 2016.

Hosang posted on his Facebook page at the time that he was attending his daughter’s graduation in Orlando, writing: “It’s already been one of those weeks. I don’t need bail money.”

Former de Blasio administration employee sues city for unpaid wages after pleading guilty to child porn charges

A former New York City employee under the de Blasio administration, who recently pleaded guilty to heinous child pornography crimes, is suing the city for unpaid wages.

Jacob Schwartz, 31, previously worked as a computer programming analyst with the city’s Department of Design and Construction, and claims he was often paid in “comp time” when he worked overtime in lieu of cash. He was arrested in 2017 after police discovered more than 3,000 child porn images and 89 videos on his computer, some with victims as young as 6 months old.

Schwartz is now suing the city and claims he is owed more than $18,000. His father is Arthur Schwartz, a lawyer and long-time district leader for Manhattan’s neighborhood of Greenwich Village. The elder Schwartz has previously prosecuted a number of cases in which labor rights were called into question, formerly representing the Transport Workers’ Union of America against the New York City Transit Authority.

KEITH RANIERE, EX-LEADER OF SELF-HELP GROUP NXIVM, CONVICTED IN SEX-TRAFFICKING CASE

In regard to his son’s case against the city, he told the New York Post: “They owed him money and he tried for two years to get paid.”

Arthur Schwartz filed the suit on behalf of his son in the Manhattan Federal Court. A law department spokesperson said that the city will review Schwartz’s complaint.

Before being arrested, Jacob Schwartz was the president of the Manhattan Young Democrats and the downstate regional vice president of the New York State Democrats. Both groups ousted him after the shocking allegations against him were brought to light.
