California ban on new fur products is first in US

California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a bill into law Saturday, making the state the first to ban the sale of new fur products.

Los Angeles and San Francisco have already put fur bans in place and last month the governor signed a law banning commercial fur trapping.

Newsom also signed another bill Saturday, banning most animals in circuses. Hawaii and New Jersey have similar bans.

CALIFORNIA GUN RIGHTS GROUP LOOKS TO OVERTURN STATE BAN ON ASSAULT WEAPONS

The new bans join other recent California actions against for-profit prisons and immigrant detention centers and small-sized hotel shampoo bottles.

The new fur law, which takes effect in 2023, was lauded by animal rights activists despite fervent opposition from the billion-dollar U.S. fur industry and threats of a lawsuit from the Fur Information Council of America.

“California is a leader when it comes to animal welfare, and today that leadership includes banning the sale of fur,” Newsom said in a statement. “But we are doing more than that. We are making a statement to the world that beautiful wild animals like bears and tigers have no place on trapeze wires or jumping through flames.”

A spokesperson for the Fur Information Council said in a statement the new law is part of a “radical vegan agenda using fur as the first step to other bans on what we wear and eat.”

Couture designers like Versace, Gucci and Giorgio Armani have either stopped using fur or pledged to in their collections and designers like Stella McCartney use no animal products in their designs.

“The signing of AB 44 underscores the point that today’s consumers simply don’t want wild animals to suffer extreme pain and fear for the sake of fashion,” Kitty Block, CEO and president of the Humane Society, said.

The ban excludes used fur, fur used for religious or tribal purposes, as well as leather, dog and cat fur, cowhides, deer, sheep and goatskin and taxidermy.

Rose McGowan rips Hillary Clinton over ties to ‘predators’ Bill Clinton, Harvey Weinstein

Rose McGowan called out Hillary Clinton last week over a report that Clinton’s publicist told journalist Ronan Farrow that his investigation into Harvey Weinstein‘s alleged history of sexual misconduct was “a concern” for the Clinton camp.

“I knew that Hillary Clinton’s people, were protecting the Monster,” McGowan wrote, referring to Weinstein. “I can’t believe I used to support her. I guess predators are her style.”

“I can’t believe I used to support her. I guess predators are her style.”

The last remark in McGowan’s tweet appeared to also apply to former President Bill Clinton, to whom McGowan referred mor clearly in separate Twitter message.

“Hillary Clinton, did you have any concern for your husband’s victims? And what about HW victims? No? Didn’t think so,” McGowan wrote.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Farrow writes in his new book, “Catch and Kill,” that Clinton publicist Nick Merrill had contacted Farrow, who was seeking an interview with Clinton as part of work on a foreign policy book. At the time, Farrow was also working on his award-winning New Yorker magazine story about Weinstein.

Merrill told Farrow the “big story” he was working on was a “concern for us,” according to The Reporter. Farrow writes that Weinstein had leveraged his relationship with Clinton as a means of applying pressure on Farrow, the outlet reported.

Harvey Weinstein tried to leverage his relationship with Hillary Clinton to put pressure on journalist Ronan Farrow, according to a report.

McGowan was one of Weinstein’s first accusers and has been an outspoken leader of the #MeToo movement.

She added that she is “against abuse of power, whether it be Trump, Clinton, HW, @NBC … the list is long. I’m not raging, I just really, really dislike liars and those who protect them.”

Merrill responded to the article on Twitter.

“I genuinely respect Ronan’s work, but have no idea what Weinstein was saying to people to save himself. What I do know is simple: I’d already rejected a Weinstein Co proposed doc about the election before talking to Ronan. If HW misrepresented facts, it wouldn’t be the 1st time.”

Weinstein also reportedly contacted NBC and even Farrow’s father, Woody Allen, to try to keep the story from going to print.

Weinstein’s trial on rape charges is scheduled for January.

Steve Kerr says he hasn’t been asked about US ‘human rights abuses’ when asked about China

Westlake Legal Group AP19284051466652 Steve Kerr says he hasn't been asked about US 'human rights abuses' when asked about China fox-news/world/world-regions/china fox-news/sports/nba fox news fnc/sports fnc Brie Stimson article 845f54c4-75a4-5f65-a185-b306d28bf35d

Steve Kerr, head coach of the Golden State Warriors, told reporters Thursday he has never been asked about “human rights abuses” that take place in the U.S. when he visits China.

“No. Nor has our record of human rights abuses come up either,” he said after a reporter asked if he had been questioned about Chinese human rights while in China. “People in China didn’t ask me about, you know, people owning AR-15s and mowing each other down in a mall.”

“The world is a complex place and there’s more gray than black and white,” he added.

Kerr, a frequent Trump critic, was called out by the president earlier this week when he said he didn’t have any thoughts on whether the Chinese were wrong to pressure the NBA to not voice support for pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong.

TRUMP MOCKS NBA COACH STEVE KERR FOR CHINA STANCE, CALLS HIM ‘LITTLE BOY’

“He was like a little boy, he was so scared…. He was shaking,” Trump said. “He didn’t know how to answer the question.”

The NBA has had a growing relationship with China, but voicing support for anti-Communist protesters in Hong Kong threatens to damage that relationship.

Houston Rockets manager Daryl Morey recently tweeted a since-deleted photo in support of anti-government protesters in Hong Kong.

Afterward, Chinese state television decided not to air two NBA exhibition games in the country.

“It’s a really bizarre international story,” Kerr said about the controversy. “A lot of us don’t know what to make of it. It’s something I’m reading about like everybody is, but I’m not gonna comment further.”

Biden campaign slams NY Times for running ‘Clinton Cash’ author’s op-ed on ex-VP’s Ukraine ties

The deputy manager of Joe Biden’s 2020 presidential campaign slammed The New York Times on Wednesday in a letter to the newspaper’s executive editor — blasting the paper’s coverage of the former vice president’s involvement in Ukraine.

The letter, written by Kate Bedingfield to Dean Baquet of the Times, criticizes the paper for “giving top billing” to “Clinton Cash” author Peter Schweizer in a Wednesday op-ed titled, “What Hunter Biden Did Was Legal – That’s the Problem,” CNN reported.

HILLARY ON BIDEN-UKRAINE ALLEGATIONS: ‘FAIR GAME’ TO QUESTION JUDGMENT, BUT ‘NO EVIDENCE’ OF WRONGDOING’

In his article, Schweizer asserts Biden was “self-dealing” in Ukraine while vice president.

Bedingfield goes on to criticize The Times’ Ukraine coverage at large. She writes that the newspaper had an “outsized hand in a baseless conspiracy theory” promoted by Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani that Biden acted inappropriately in helping get rid of a Ukrainian prosecutor.

She then accuses the Times of “active participation” in a “smear campaign” against Biden, citing a May article titled, “Biden Faces Conflict of Interest Questions That Are Being Promoted by Trump and Allies.”

The Times later pushed back against the Biden campaign official’s assertions, according to a statement obtained by CNN.

“Our coverage of the Biden campaign and Hunter Biden has been fair and accurate,” the newspaper wrote, adding it “will continue to cover Joe Biden with the same tough and fair standards we apply to every candidate in the race and we’re happy to sit down with Biden advisers anytime to discuss news coverage.”

The Times’ statement emphasized the Schweizer story was published in the Opinion section, “where their mission is to invite intelligent discussion on a range of opinions and ideas.”

The Biden campaign also sent letters to Twitter and Facebook on Wednesday, asking them not to run ads from the Trump campaign that promote what it described as conspiracy theories about the Bidens in Ukraine, according to CNN.

The largest utility company in California began its second wave of planned power outages to head off wildfire danger from downed power lines Wednesday evening, according to a report.

Pacific Gas and Electric Co. delayed the outages planned for noon Wednesday in parts of Northern California until after 7 p.m.

Around 234,000 customers were expected to lose power in the second wave, Saramento’s KCRA-TV reported.

PG&E said it turned the power back on for some of the 513,000 customers in 22 counties who were left in the dark around midnight Wednesday for the company’s first wave of outages due to a “widespread, severe wind event.”

Around 44,000 customers in the northeast Sierra Foothills had the power turned back on Wednesday afternoon, KCRA reported.

The second waves of outages include Calaveras, Tuolumne, San Joaquin, and Stanislaus counties, which are all east of San Francisco.

CALIFORNIA WILDFIRE RISK MAY CAUSE POWER OUTAGES IN 30 COUNTIES FOR MORE THAN 600,000 CUSTOMERS

Other counties expected to lose power in the second wave include Alameda, Alpine, Contra Costa, Mariposa, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz and Mendocino County, KCRA reported.

PG&E has set up about 30 community centers offering air conditioning, restrooms, bottled water, and electronic charging stations during daylight hours.

PG&E made the decision to turn off customers’ power because forecasts of dry, hot and windy weather, which up the risk of a rapidly spreading wildfire.

The company said the weather event is expected to last through midday Thursday.

“The safety of our customers and the communities we serve is our most important responsibility, which is why PG&E has decided to turn the power off to customers during this widespread, severe wind event,” Michael Lewis, PG&E’s senior vice president of Electric Operations, said in a statement. “We understand the effects this event will have on our customers and appreciate the public’s patience as we do what is necessary to keep our communities safe and reduce the risk of wildfire.”

The company expects the planned outage will in total affect around 800,000 customers in 34 counties.

“We’ve also identified areas where we could safely energize sections of our electrical system that were not in high fire threat zones and reconfiguring our system in different areas so it didn’t have as large an impact as previously planned,” PG&E spokesperson Brandi Merlo said in a statement.

California has suffered a series of deadly wildfires across the state in the last few years, including the Camp Fire, the deadliest in the state’s history, which killed 85 people and nearly destroyed the town of Paradise.

A potential third wave of shutoffs would include the company’s southernmost customers in Santa Barbara and Kern County.

Officials at a Los Angeles city council meeting Tuesday proposed banning all e-cigarettes and vaping devices until they are deemed safe by the federal Food and Drug Administration, according to reports.

The potential move would follow places like San Francisco and Massachusetts that have enacted similar e-cigarette bans in the wake of a spate of lung illnesses thought to be linked to the products, The Los Angeles Times reported.

NEW YORK IDENTIFIES FIRST VAPING-RELATED DEATH AS BRONX TEEN

“The reports of illness and death caused by unregulated vaping devices is a public health crisis,” the motion introduced by Councilman Paul Koretz reads. “Los Angeles is not content to wait and do nothing as the numbers of illnesses and even deaths associated with unregulated vaping devices increases daily.”

Los Angeles County has already banned flavored e-cigarettes and menthol cigarettes, something states like Michigan and New York have done and the Trump administration supports.

At least 18 people have died from the recent lung illnesses, but the cause remains a bit of a mystery, according to The Times.

Experts who oppose the bans say that they will just push smokers trying to quit back to using cigarettes or illegal products.

“What bans like this are likely to do is increase the use of illicit products and decrease regulation, which ironically will expand the use of the products that are causing folks to get sick,” Northeastern University Professor Leo Beletsky told The Times.

Trey Gowdy to join Trump’s legal team on impeachment inquiry: report

Former U.S. Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., is joining President Trump’s legal team as outside counsel for the House’s expanding impeachment inquiry, according to a report.

An administration official who spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity confirmed Gowdy’s hiring Tuesday.

Gowdy, who formerly chaired the House Oversight and Reform Committee, decided not seek to reelection last year and joined the law firm Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP after leaving office.

He has also been a Fox News contributor but the network would not immediately comment on Gowdy’s status after the Associated Press report.

The White House wrote in an eight-page letter to Congress on Tuesday that it won’t participate in what it’s calling an “illegal” investigation, writing that the inquiry “violates fundamental fairness and constitutionally mandated due process” and “lacks any legitimate constitutional foundation.”

Justice Dept. must turn over material related to Mueller grand jury, judge rules

Westlake Legal Group AP19203352203125 Justice Dept. must turn over material related to Mueller grand jury, judge rules fox-news/politics/trump-impeachment-inquiry fox-news/news-events/russia-investigation fox news fnc/politics fnc Brie Stimson article 87b4290d-df90-557f-9ae2-6bea140f1919

A federal judge Tuesday ordered the Justice Department to disclose some material relating grand jury information from former Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Moscow.

Chief Judge Beryl A. Howell balked at the Justice Department’s appeal to deny a House Judiciary Committee request for grand jury materials, including redacted portions of Mueller’s report, ordering the department to reveal which and how many FBI witness interview reports have been turned over to the committee and how many they plan to turn over, The Washington Post reported.

DURHAM INVESTIGATION INTO ORIGINS OF 2016 TRUMP CAMPAIGN SURVEILLANCE EXPANDS ITS SCOPE

The judge also said the department must explain why it was withholding interviews with witnesses who didn’t go before the grand jury.

Howell’s ruling came after hours of testimony from lawyers for House Democrats and the Justice Department.

“This is not a situation of us getting all sorts of materials,” a lawyer for House Democrats said. “We’re getting almost nothing.”

The judge, appointed by former President Obama in 2010, called some of DOJ’s arguments for withholding information “extreme,” citing the department’s contention that some of the material from the Watergate grand jury should not have been turned over to Congress during the impeachment inquiry into former President Nixon.

“Wow, OK,” Howell said, according to The Post. “As I said, the department is taking extraordinary positions in this case.”

The Justice Department argued that a 1974 federal appeals court decision that said impeachment proceedings are exempt from grand jury secrecy rules is no longer valid because a U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit this year tightened requirements to exclude impeachment proceedings.

The judge also ordered the DOJ to disclose by Friday whether the Mueller team had disclosed grand jury information when asking for help from other countries, explaining that she wanted to know if the DOJ was withholding information from Congress that had already been shared with foreign countries.

Republicans have also argued that a formal impeachment inquiry isn’t taking place until the House has a vote on impeachment. Democrats deny a vote needs to take place.

The judge hasn’t said when she’ll make a decision on whether DOJ has to turn over the material.

A great white shark apparently lost a couple of teeth when it chomped into a scuba diver’s kayak off Catalina Island in Southern California last weekend.

Danny McDaniel told The Los Angeles Times he felt something move his kayak on Saturday. At first, he thought it was his friend in another kayak, bumping into him, but then he realized it was the shark’s head.

“I saw the snout of the shark over the back of the kayak,” he said. “Then I followed the snout up and there’s a giant, immense body off to the right side of the boat.”

“I saw the snout of the shark over the back of the kayak. Then I followed the snout up and there’s a giant, immense body off to the right side of the boat.”

The shark turned the kayak 180 degrees, bit into it and swam away, he said.

The teeth are each two inches long, which suggests the shark was about 19 feet long, The Times reported.

McDaniel, a veteran diver, said he has swum with sharks before but has never encountered one this big.

There were about 12 great white shark sightings in the area last summer and this specific shark has been seen several times in the last two weeks, Chris Lowe, director of the Shark Lab at Cal State Long Beach, said.

“This is the new normal. We have to share the ocean with them,” he told The Times. “We should always be thinking there may be sharks here — but that doesn’t necessarily mean we should be scared.”

Lowe said great whites are typically shy but will come closer when they’re curious.

Preschool staffers suspended after 7 toddlers found wandering near busy street

Several staffers were suspended from an Arizona preschool after seven children were found wandering near a busy street after a playground gate “failed” Friday, according to reports.

Drivers near the Little Sunshine’s Playhouse and Preschool in Gilbert, Ariz., southeast of Phoenix, called 911 when they saw the toddlers walking toward the street without an adult in sight.

“I noticed two little kids out kind of close to the street so I slowed down,” a woman who wished to remain anonymous told Arizona Family. “As I got closer, I noticed there wasn’t a guardian and I stopped. I was in the center, and the kids started to step out into the street.”

While other drivers helped collect the children, witness Samantha Crouch said she went into the school to talk to the employees.

She said they told her the gate’s latch was confusing because it went two ways.

“I found that answer to be grossly unacceptable,” she said.

Laura Dill, whose daughter attends the school, told Fox 10 she’s a teacher and understands how quickly kids can get away.

“I think the gate latch is one thing, that’s a mistake, it happens,” Dill told Arizona Family. “The fact that the kids got away without noticing, I think that’s a completely different issue.”

She told FOX 10 of Phoenix she’s keeping her daughter in the school.
