George W. Bush’s presidency is an interesting period to reflect back on. By a certain sect of Republicans, Bush is held up as a good man that did the best he could in a difficult time. There’s some truth to that characterization in so far as the challenges after 9/11 were real.

As time has passed though, Republicans at large have taken a more critical eye at his myriad of missteps, not just on foreign policy (of which the ramifications we are still suffering today), but also in his inability to accomplish much of anything for the conservative cause in his eight years. When one thinks of his “signature” achievements, the mind is more likely to go to his expansion of Medicare than any conservative victory. Is John Roberts as the new swing vote on the Supreme Court really a decisive win at this point?

But perhaps the thing that bothered some Republicans the most was all the wasted political capital. For eight long years, Republicans rallied around Bush and his failures, supporting him even when he wouldn’t speak out to support himself. He was given the benefit of the doubt even when he probably didn’t deserve it. In the end, he left the party in shambles, ushering in the era of Barack Obama.

Despite all the capital expended on his behalf, Bush couldn’t be bothered to return the favor. He spent most of his post-presidency palling around with Bill Clinton and painting pictures. He refused to speak out even as the Middle East and North Africa burned the ground. This left some Republicans disillusioned. Where was the reciprocity for all those years of support?

Apparently, Bush has found his tongue again though, because he’s speaking out against Trump’s pull out of Syria in a comment that can only be described as face palm worthy.

After nearly a decade of refusing to say a cross word about Obama’s policies, the moment Trump steps out of line and becomes too “isolationist,” he’s ready to talk again. It’s this kind of thing that produces so much of the angst from mainline Republicans toward the establishment figures in their party.

We’ve seen this same thing with Mitt Romney. When Republicans needed voices to speak against Obama, Romney was nowhere to be found. When it’s Trump and it may benefit him personally, he’s ready to talk again though. It’s opportunism at its worst and it makes Republicans feel like their own leaders don’t have their back. In short, it’s how you got Trump.

The easiest thing in the world to do right now is criticize Donald Trump. There’s no bravery in that. It’d have been much more impressive had they been willing to withstand the onslaught that would come by criticizing Obama when Republicans needed their voices.

Further, the topic in question is something Bush should sit out for the rest of his life. His track record on the Middle East simply does not lend him the credibly to speak on the issue any longer. It’d be like Donald Trump criticizing someone for having an affair. It just doesn’t make sense.

I’ll end by nothing that when the Obama administration propagated a civil war that led to 500,000 dead people, Bush didn’t speak up. When Ben Rhodes helped orchestrate the disastrous Arab Spring, Bush had nothing to say. When ISIS formed in the rubble of it all, Bush had more pictures to paint. But now, all of the sudden, he finds his voice to go after a fellow Republicans president? Really odd how that works.

Fox News Slaps Back at Trump After His Twitter Criticism

Westlake Legal Group fox-news-alert-SCREENSHOT-620x326 Fox News Slaps Back at Trump After His Twitter Criticism twitter Rant Politics Neal Cavuto Kira Davis Guy Benson Front Page Stories Front Page fox news feud Featured Story Election donald trump dnc democrats criticism 2020

Some Fox News personalities have apparently had enough of being denigrated by the President.

You may recall that earlier this week, Trump went on a Twitter rant in which he slammed Fox News for interviewing a DNC official. Kira Davis covered it and gave her analysis in a write up a few days back.

Neal Cavuto took to the airwaves late in the week and opened his show with a monologue pointedly telling Trump that Fox News “doesn’t work for you, Mr. President.”

We saw a similar reply from Guy Benson.

Personally, I think this is being purposely obtuse. Trump was not asserting that Fox News was his employee. He was saying the network wasn’t working for him and his supporters, as in it’s not producing the content they want anymore, often enough. It may sound really cool and snarky to slap back and say you don’t work for him, but that’s clearly not what Trump was even saying.

Now, that’s probably an overreaction given most of Fox’s biggest names are still outwardly pro-Trump, but I can understand the criticism. As Kira noted in her piece, conservatives don’t have dozens of non-left wing, major outlets to choose from. They’ve come to rely on Fox to balance the scales and when they see segments that mirror CNN, they naturally get frustrated. What’s the point of Fox if it moves so much to the center that you can get the same thing from Jake Tapper’s show?

Yes, news networks should report the news honestly and that means criticizing all sides at times, but no one should pretend Fox News hasn’t rose to prominence specifically because they’ve championed a conservative viewpoint.

It’s probably best for both sides that this silly feud not go any farther though. Trump needs Fox News on some level and they need him and his supporters.

Things Get Lit As Joe Biden and Cory Booker Exchange Blows Over Segregationist Comments

Westlake Legal Group media.townhall-8-620x317 Things Get Lit As Joe Biden and Cory Booker Exchange Blows Over Segregationist Comments Unforced error segregationists Politics Joe Biden gaffe Front Page Stories Front Page Featured Story democrats Democrat Primary Race criticism Cory Booker CNN Body Blows 2020 campaign

As I wrote on yesterday, Joe Biden made his first major gaffe of the 2020 campaign and it was a pretty big deal.

It managed to wrap up several key negatives for Biden in one single, ill-advised rant. Not only did he appear to tacitly praise segregationists as being “civil,” he did so while attacking the far left of his own party. In the end, he pleases no-one. Not the Biden friendly minority voters who supported Obama nor the radicals who are more apt to support Sanders or Warren.

Sen. Cory Booker, who’s 2020 campaign has never really taken flight, has decided to try to capitalize on this by going hard at Biden for the remarks.

Others, including Kamala Harris and Elizabeth Warren also hit him in statements to the press.

In response, Biden doubled down, suggesting that it’s actually Booker who should apologize.

Inject this directly into my veins.

Not to be outdone, Booker then ran to Don Lemon’s show on CNN, which is basically a venue for anyone who wants to accuse someone else of racism. That’s Lemon’s entire shtick.

Even more hilariously, some Democrats are now hitting Biden for using the phrase “racist bone,” asserting that Biden saying he’s not a racist actually makes him a racist. I didn’t say it had to make sense.

Biden is starting to take fire from all sides and nothing I’ve seen from him says to me that he has the physical, nor political stamina to absorb the barrage.

As I’ve said a few times this week, these attacks from fellow Democrat primary opponents are a preview of next week’s debate. Whether it’s him not being far-left enough or these latest comments speaking well of segregationists, he’s going to be hit and hit hard.

Now, if he were as smart as Donald Trump when it comes to handling your opponents, Biden would just hit back and own the criticism. He’s not though so he won’t. He’ll instead continue to try to kowtow to the left while desperately clinging to his moderate appeal at the same time. It won’t work and it’s going to come crashing down.

In the voice of George Constanza from Seinfeld, “A Biden divided against itself…can not stand.”

Rod Rosenstein Goes Nuclear on James Comey and It’s Beautiful

Westlake Legal Group rosenstein-goosed-620x317 Rod Rosenstein Goes Nuclear on James Comey and It’s Beautiful Trump-Russia Investigation Rod Rosenstein Robert Mueller Politics nuclear Mueller report james comey Hillary Clinton hack Front Page Stories Front Page fox news Featured Story FBI donald trump doj criticism

I don’t think he’ll be getting plaudits from CNN anymore after this.

He had been rehabbed for a while after revelations about him wanting to record the President came out. His handling of Robert Mueller, or better yet his complete lack of oversight of the situation, also pleased resistance members everywhere.

Well, kiss that good will goodbye because Rosenstein lit up James Comey tonight in remarks before the Greater Baltimore Committee. This report is via Fox News.

Rod Rosenstein unloaded on former FBI Director James Comey in remarks to the Greater Baltimore Committee (GBC) on Monday evening, slamming Comey’s turn as a “partisan pundit,” reiterating that he deserved to be fired, and faulting him for trampling “bright lines that should never be crossed.”

Here’s the some of the criticism.

“Now, the former director is a partisan pundit, selling books and earning speaking fees while speculating about the strength of my character and the fate of my immortal soul,” Rosenstein said. “That is disappointing. Speculating about souls is not a job for police and prosecutors. Generally, we base our opinions on eyewitness testimony.”

Holy crap, that’s brutal. It’s also completely true.

Comey’s biggest flaw, aside from being a corrupt partisan, is that he sees himself as some kind of virtuous savior. Instead of following protocol, Comey spent his time staring into the abyss and making moral judgements on legal matters that should only be based on evidentiary standards.

Rod Rosenstein sees through Comey’s facade and pulls no punches. The shots at him about being a media pundit are also well deserved. Comey is not a serious person. He’s out to make a buck and keep his spot on the D.C. cocktail circuit.

The Hillary email investigation was also brought up in Rosenstein’s speech.

“The clearest mistake was the director’s decision to hold a press conference about an open case, reveal his recommendation and discuss details about the investigation, without the consent of the prosecutors and the attorney general,” Rosenstein said. “Then, he chose to send a letter to the Congress on the eve of the election stating that one of the candidates was under criminal investigation, expecting it to be released immediately to the public.”

Rosenstein added: “Those actions were not within the range of reasonable decisions. They were inconsistent with our goal of communicating to all FBI employees that they should respect the attorney general’s role, refrain from disclosing information about criminal investigations, avoid disparaging uncharged persons, and above all, not take unnecessary steps that could influence an election.”

This is basically the same thing that Robert Mueller did with his report. Instead of doing his job and simply making a recommendation on obstruction, he included thousands of footnotes in his report. The purpose of that was smear people who he didn’t have the guts to charge while not even doing the one thing he was appointed to do, which was to decide on the obstruction question.

Comey’s press conference may have actually been beneficial to Republicans at the time but that doesn’t change the fact that it was completely inappropriate. His appropriation of Loretta Lynch’s role (with her blessing via the scheme she cooked up) showed that Comey had no care for legal norms or standards. He essentially appointed himself as a fourth branch of government and to this day thinks he was righteous for doing so.

People like that are dangerous to have in governmental positions. Someone with no boundaries can justify doing anything and swear they are virtuous while doing it. Comey’s current mindset, complete with introspective tweets staring at trees, borders on delusion.

Firing Comey was long overdue and it’s nice to see Rosenstein not back down from his recommendation to do so. He should probably lay low a few days because the backlash from the media and liberals is going to be swift.
