Israel Intercepts Four Rockets Launched From Syria

Four rockets were launched from Syria toward the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights at dawn on Tuesday, setting off air-raid sirens but causing no harm, according to the Israeli military.

The military said that the incoming fire was intercepted by Israel’s Iron Dome air defense system and that it appeared no rockets had fallen on the Israeli-controlled side of the line.

It was not immediately clear if the rocket fire from Syria was meant as a surprise attack or came in response to Israeli activity across its northern frontier. Around the same time as the rocket launches, Sana, the official Syrian news agency, reported that explosions were heard in the vicinity of the Damascus airport.

An Israeli military spokeswoman had no comment on the report from Syria.

After decades of quiet, there have been occasional exchanges of fire across the old Israeli-Syrian armistice line as Israel has worked, mostly clandestinely, to curb Iran’s growing influence in Syria, largely under cover of the chaos of Syria’s civil war.

Abandoning years of ambiguity over Israeli involvement in specific attacks, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu acknowledged early this year that Israeli forces had attacked Iranian weapons warehouses at Damascus International Airport.

Israel’s shadow war against Iran became even more public this summer when it carried out a series of strikes in the region, including one that killed two Iranian-trained militants in Syria who Israel said were preparing to dispatch armed drones to attack it.

The latest tensions in the north came days after a flare-up across Israel’s border with Gaza to the south. Palestinian militants from Islamic Jihad fired hundreds of rockets into Israel, and Israeli warplanes struck targets in Gaza, in a two-day clash set off by Israel’s killing of a senior Islamic Jihad commander there in a surprise airstrike.

The Syrian authorities and Islamic Jihad also blamed Israel for another, almost simultaneous, missile attack on the Damascus home of Akram al-Ajouri, describing him as a member of the group’s political bureau in Syria. Mr. al-Ajouri survived the attack, but his son and another person were reported killed in the strike. Maintaining its more customary silence in an effort to avoid retaliation, Israel neither claimed nor denied responsibility for that attack.

Violence escalates in northwest Syria, claiming more lives

A Syrian military official says insurgents in the country’s northwest are preparing for an attack on government-held areas.

The comments Sunday to state news agency SANA by the unnamed official came as the rebel-held Idlib province and nearby areas are witnessing the worst wave of violence since Russia and Turkey brokered a truce in September.

Syrian opposition activists, including the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and the Syrian Civil Defense, say Syrian warplanes and artillery have pounded rebel-held areas in Idlib and Hama province.

The Observatory said government shelling has killed at least three people.

Pro-government media said insurgents shelled villages on the opposite side of the front line.

Government troops and insurgents have been reinforcing their positions in recent days.

Syrian media: Bomb placed in car kills civilian in Damascus

Westlake Legal Group og-fox-news Syrian media: Bomb placed in car kills civilian in Damascus fox-news/world/world-regions/middle-east fox-news/world fnc/world fnc Damascus (Syria) Associated Press article 86d93b38-a2cd-554d-80c8-f26c6dc2985b

Syrian state-run media say a bomb has killed a civilian and wounded five other people in a Damascus neighborhood.

The official SANA news agency says the bomb had been placed in a car in the Nahr Aysheh district in southern Damascus and killed the driver when it detonated. The agency says an investigation is underway.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the bombing.

Bombings in the Syrian capital have been relatively rare in the past few years, particularly since President Bashar Assad’s government last year secured areas around Damascus that had been held for years by rebels.

The country’s civil war is now in its ninth year. The conflict has killed more than 450,000 people and displaced millions of others.

Syria, Iran say US is waging ‘economic terrorism’

Syria and Iran say the United States is waging “economic terrorism” against countries that have different opinions and should pursue its aims through diplomacy instead.

Syrian state news agency SANA quoted President Bashar Assad as saying that the Trump administration’s decision to designate Iran’s Revolutionary Guard a terrorist organization was an “irresponsible move.” Assad spoke at a meeting Tuesday with Iran’s visiting Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, who said the U.S. move was “stupid.”

Syria is in the grip of a severe fuel crisis aggravated by sanctions on the Assad government and Iran, its close ally.

Zarif resigned in February after being kept in the dark about a surprise visit by Assad to Tehran, but Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani rejected his resignation and he remained in his post.

Syria’s state news agency says an Israeli airstrike on a military position in the country’s central province of Hama has wounded three soldiers and destroyed several buildings.

SANA quoted an unnamed military official as saying that the airstrike near the town of Masyaf occurred in the early hours of Saturday.

It says Israeli warplanes fired missiles toward Syria from Lebanon’s airspace and that Syrian air defenses shot down some of them.

Israel has in recent months acknowledged it has been striking Iranian targets in Syria. The last such strikes that Israel announced were in late March.

There is no immediate comment from Israel.
